Fire starter Welcome to this week’s Reno News & Review.

Our cover story last week, Jake Highton’s essay making a progressive argument in favor of Donald Trump over Hillary Clinton, has generated a lot of fiery discussions.

We’ve received a lot of letters to the editor—which will run soon— and personal emails about it, as well as hearing a lot about it around town over the long weekend.

This has been, and will no doubt continue to be, a strange, passionate and contentious election. We didn’t run Highton’s essay merely to stoke the fires of the proverbial angry letter writers or to present a straw man argument. It’s just a different perspective—and one we found fascinating, even if we don’t agree with it.

And of course there’s no more fitting way to celebrate our country than a good ol’ fashioned American political argument.

Speaking of politics, don’t forget to vote in the Best of Northern Nevada readers’ poll. Voting end at 7 a.m. on July 14, so this is your last chance to vote in the contest that really matters: which casino has the best carpet.

I want to take a quick minute to congratulate Laura Davis and Bryan Jones on their recent engagement. Laura was a freelance writer who contributed regularly to the RN&R circa 2010 to 2014. In the summer of 2013, I assigned her to write a story about Bryan, who had recently become a solo act after years performing with the excellent Reno band Buster Blue.

They had never met before, and now, three years later, they’re getting hitched. That’s about the only time I’ve ever successfully—albeit unintentionally—played matchmaker. They live up in Seattle now, and they’re a great couple—the kind of people who warm all the hearts in a room—and I wish them all the best.

Love those quotation marks The news cycle obfuscation and diversions propagated by the Obamski White House are to facilitate his own evil “final solution.”

The MSM—ever the gullible lemmings—routinely regurgitate the White House official line on transgender bathrooms, white cops killing black kids, educational equality, Brexit, military downsizing, etc. This is nothing but smoke and mirrors of Obozos real design— namely, to cancel the November elections, declare martial law, and become “Emperor for Life.”

A WH manufactured “crisis” of “Chicken Little the sky is falling” proportions will soon become apparent. Iran scraping the nuclear deal would be a likely candidate as the WH is not known for original thinking in the crisis department. The “crisis” will then manifest itself as completely at odds with the constitutional process of presidential selection “for the safety and security of the country.” Elections subsequently indefinitely “voided” by “presidential decree” and Obummer will declare himself in charge until “the crisis is averted.” Of course, the crisis will never be averted.

Nothing would please this writer more than to be didactically incorrect in this supposition. I merely put it out there in the hopes that rational and thinking Americans will have a chance to not be taken in by this future B. Hussein charade.

Well of Wells Re “Islamic expert” (letters, June 23): K.R. Kollman wrote in his letter published on June 23, 2016, “without becoming an Orson Wells 1984 society!” While we can agree with his intent, he was no doubt referring to the book, 1984 that was written by Herbert George Wells, not Orson Welles, who was the radio and movie actor who gained notoriety for his War of the Worlds radio drama—which, just to confuse the matter more, happened to be based on the book by H.G. Wells—that caused panic in various cities across America when it was aired on CBS radio, October 30, 1938.

Be a sport and print a line to correct this error so that your dear readers learn the difference between these two notable gentlemen.

When does Trump go too far?

In 1912, Theodore Roosevelt was riding high with the progressive wing of the Republican Party. The major GOP progressives were behind him in his planned campaign to return to the presidency by defeating his handpicked successor, William Howard Taft. Then in a speech to the Ohio Constitutional Convention on Feb. 21 four days before he announced his candidacy, Roosevelt said he supported letting the public vote to overturn court rulings of constitutional interpretation. The notion of letting the public vote constitutional rights up or down shocked progressives and they abandoned him in droves.

Some of his closest allies, such as Elihu Root and Henry Stimson, abandoned him for Taft.

The racist proposals of Donald Trump are worse than anything Roosevelt proposed, yet nearly all Republicans who have endorsed him are standing by him. Like most people, we don’t know whether Trump is a racist, but it no longer matters, because he is clearly willing to employ racism in both his private business and public affairs. So the result is the same—racist policies.

In 1912, principled Republican leaders abandoned Roosevelt. In 2016, there are very few Republican leaders.

There are delegates who say they are following what the public wants. This is akin to Nevada Assemblymember Jim Wheeler’s assertion that he would vote for slavery if his constituents wanted it. Where does that notion end? When does Trump go too far? When do Republicans act? In the 1930s, someone observed Germans voting for authoritarianism and called it a flight from freedom. Are the delegates to our presidential

nominating conventions nothing more than seismographs, registering prejudice but doing nothing about it?

In May in these pages, our columnist Sheila Leslie drew our attention to the words of conservative columnist David Brooks on Trump as nominee: “So for those of us appalled by this prospect—what are we supposed to do?

Well, not what the leaders of the Republican Party are doing. They’re going down meekly and hoping for a quiet convention. They seem blithely unaware that this is a Joe McCarthy moment. People will be judged by where they stood at this time. Those who walked with Trump will be tainted forever after for the degradation of standards and the general election slaughter.”

Do Republican delegates really want to live with a Trump outcome they did nothing to stop, and do they really want to have to explain it in the years ahead to their children, friends and neighbors?

Republicans look in horror at the opposing candidate, Hillary Clinton. But they have done a lot of this to themselves. She’s a conservative, Wall Street Democrat who goes to war too easily. By misrepresenting her as some kind of flaming liberal feminist all these years, Republicans bought into their own propaganda.

Republicans are about to nominate a candidate whose executive style is to pit people against each other, to leap on tragedy and milk it for its political value, to call out the worst in our people.

This is not the way to build a country that is competitive, productive and innovative—or decent and humane. Ω

There should be, I think, maybe a fine line between some rules that come with it—like you can’t drive after you smoke, because some people can take it and some can’t. I think there’s been a tremendous amount of study on the effects of alcohol and, you know—where the dangers lie, not only to health but public safety. Yes. Not for recreational use, though, only for medical reasons. My father has terminal cancer. So he has stage four cancer, and it helps him with all of his pain. … If it’s going to be for casual use, then it should be regulated—just like how we have liquor laws, blood alcohol levels. Necessary trouble This Fourth of July week, progressives have much to mourn, but it’s worth reflecting on the glimmers of hope as well.

If the murder of 26 elementary school children and their teachers wasn’t enough to convince our elected officials to do something about gun safety, why would we think 49 mostly young, gay Latinos cut down in the haven of a gay nightclub would change the hearts and minds of a Republican Congress?

At least we can count on their thoughts and prayers.

It was reassuring to see national Democrats find their voices and demand Congress do more than observe a minute of silence each time a gun-fueled tragedy erupts. Democratic senators forced four votes on common sense gun safety measures broadly supported by the public, to close loopholes in background checks and prevent those on no-fly lists from buying firearms.

The votes failed, but left behind a tell-tale track of those beholden to the National Rifle Association instead of their constituents.

Then the House Democrats, led by U.S. Rep. John Lewis, a civil rights icon, literally sat down on the House Floor and demanded Speaker Paul Ryan allow a transparent vote on similar legislation.

Ryan refused. He turned the CSPAN cameras off, and members of the House broadcast the protest via Periscope. Then he tried to redirect the debate to the members’ lack of decorum and flaunting of the rules.

The U.S. Supreme Court also recently took a swing at the NRA, upholding the Lautenberg amendment, which allows for guns to be removed from those convicted of domestic violence, a major concern in Nevada, a state that too often leads the nation in women murdered by firearms wielded by their domestic partners.

Another major U.S. Supreme Court decision favored women’s reproductive rights, declaring that Texas anti-abortion laws—served up as a deceitful effort to “protect” women’s health—were unconstitutional. The 2013 legislation imposed

ridiculous standards of care that were not supported by medical associations or health professionals as a way to force abortion clinics from operating and, ironically, place many more women in danger from unsafe abortions.

Dissenting justices clearly showed their cards in response to Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s concurring opinion, which said “it is beyond rational belief” that the law “could genuinely protect the health of women.” The anti-choice justices who think women should not be allowed to make their own health decisions suggested the Texas clinics that closed in response to the new law might simply have all had older doctors who decided to retire on the same day.

Who do they think they are kidding?

Also last week, justice was finally served in the murder of Victor Jara, a Chilean folksinger (often described as the “Bob Dylan of South America”), during the 1973 military coup in Chile.

His assailant, a former Chilean military

officer who later immigrated to the United States and is now a naturalized citizen, was held to account by a Florida jury, who awarded Jara’s family $28 million in damages.

Rebecca Solnit, the West’s leading intellectual and writer, summed up the good news in a social media post, citing these and other meaningful progressive steps forward, commenting: “And yeah, I know forest fires, floods, coral reefs, climate change, Brexit, skinheads, corporations. The troubles didn’t go away, but you can’t wait until they all do or you’ll never ever celebrate. Good things are good even in the presence of bad things.”

Let’s allow ourselves a bit of celebration and gratitude that we live in a country where we can keep trying to get it right. There will be plenty of time next week to get into some of the “good trouble, necessary trouble” promoted by Rep. Lewis. As he said, “Sometimes by sitting down, by sitting in, you’re standing up.” Ω

Nevada speaks, Congress sits The constitutional conservative cause to repeal the Sandoval commerce tax is off to a shaky start. State Treasurer Ron Knecht’s “RIP Commerce Tax” referendum was abandoned because the Nevada Supreme Court in its infinite pettifogging wisdom ruled the ballot summary wording failed to clearly state a tax repeal might involve some spending cuts. Their legalistic ruling trumped the will of the 77,000 signatures already gathered from angry Nevadans.

The June 9 Republican primary featured some conservative victories, but quite a few liberty warriors failed on their first assault up the statist beaches. Jennifer Terhune, radio talk show co-host, lost her first bid for office in Assembly district 25. She will be heard from again.

In Assembly district 40, Al Kramer beat two other conservatives and Sandoval candidate Philip “PK” O’Neill.

Constitutional conservative Victoria Seaman easily defeated Sandoval centrist Erv Nelson in Senate district 6. In Assembly 26, conservative constitutional

educator Lisa Krasner defeated Sandoval lite Jason Guinasso.

Cue Snidely Whiplash entrance: Assembly district 36 commerce tax villain James Oscarson hog tied constitutional conservative Tina Trenner to the railroad tracks. The only one who can save her from the evil Whiplash and keep Nye County taxpayers from being swindled out of their tax dollars is Dudley Do-Right—er, Libertarian Party candidate and brothel magnate Dennis Hof. This race looks like fun!

Danny Tarkanian used name recognition and a conservative platform to defeat Sandoval favorite James Roberson in U.S. House district 3.

For U.S. Senate, what the Heck, it’s Joe. Sharron Angle is a dedicated tax foe but just couldn’t muster support against Dr. Heck.

Heck is OK, but his opponent is awful.

Democrat Catherine Cortez Masto is, in my view, despicable for exploiting the discredited “human trafficking” moral panic. Cortez Masto wants to use “sex trafficking”—in

practice, all commercial sex—to expand federal sex crime databases and enhance sentencing for the imaginary “traffickers.”

Do-gooders like Cortez Masto rank among the lowest of political power seekers. Her plan to “help” sex workers involves arrests, and then a specialty court procedure to reform the soiled doves who were “trafficked” into sex work. “Traffickers” turn out in real life to be mainly friends, family and clients who are accused of “trafficking” because they drove a sex worker to work (god forbid across a state line), rented them a room, or paid for sex with a “trafficked” 15-year-old carrying a phony ID. The “traffickers” will likely not get the diversion treatment, but rather a fat mandatory minimum sentence. The sex workers are degraded and put in more danger.

The only thing worse than a moral crusader is a gaggle of jaded old millionaires who try to relive their glory days cloaked in a shroud of ignorance. The crackling sound of bending arthritic joints heard in the House of Representatives

was caused by the millionaire boomers comprising the House Democrats thudding clumsily to the floor in a sit-in just like they did in the ’60s, only now much heavier and with a lot less hair. Those sit-ins were to protest the Vietnam War or Jim Crow segregation, but now they were to authorize the use of secret government watch lists to deprive innocent people of their right to self-defense. Taking away constitutional rights without due process now takes “courage.” Real courage would have been to sit in to protest Hillary and Barack’s global sales of real weapons of war to irresponsible allies that inflamed foreign civil wars and killed hundreds of thousands. Left liberalism has failed to reign in the warfare state or protect civil liberties. Ω

Kochs attacK candidate A political action committee supporting Republican U.S. Senate candidate Joe Heck is accusing his opponent of enforcing the law as attorney general.

Television and online ads say Democrat Catherine Cortez Masto, “after accepting $70,000 from taxi companies … went after Uber—once, twice, three times until she drove them out of town along with all their jobs.”

What actually happened is that when Cortez Masto was attorney general in 2014, the ride-sharing firms were unlicensed. The state Transportation Authority called on the attorney general’s office to deal with the companies “until Uber comes into compliance with the laws and regulations passed by the Nevada Legislature,” according to a Nov. 20, 2014 brief she filed. She had to go to court “once, twice, three times” because Uber continued to operate even after temporary court orders were issued, that brief said.

The TV ads say Cortez Masto “protected special interests instead of us.” Us, in this case, is Freedom Partners Action Fund of Arlington, Virginia, funded by the Koch Brothers.

It was Uber, operating illegally, which cost Nevadans their jobs. And it was the courts that shut Uber down because legislators had not had a chance to meet and change state law since Uber emerged as a new transportation form (the Nevada Legislature meets only every other year.)

When lawmakers met in 2015, they changed the law, and Uber now operates legally. Uber’s argument was with the law and the legislature, not with the attorney general’s office, which was enforcing the law.

It’s not the only time recently that conservatives argued in favor of overriding state law and ignoring the role of legislators. See next story.

What’s ahead Democrats and Republicans prepare their shows

treasurer attacKs ifc The Interim Finance Committee—a legislative panel that allocates state funds when the full Nevada Legislature is out of session—has blocked a plan by Nevada Treasurer Dan Schwartz to expand a college savings program. Schwartz responded by issuing a prepared statement attacking the committee: “Nevada children were the ones who really lost in yesterday’s IFC hearing. I brought forward a plan to provide Nevada families with $1,000 worth of incentives to save for college without using taxpayer dollars. Yet, the IFC voted to pay over a half million dollars in credit card fees using taxpayer dollars. ...

Nevada families deserve better than they received yesterday.”

The “College Kick Start” program is a tax-advantaged savings plan authorized by Section 529 of the Internal Revenue Code. Schwartz wanted to expand a pilot program beyond the level envisioned by the legislature and offer greater incentives.

Legislators were reluctant to act on such a sizable expansion without authority from the full legislature and also felt they did not have enough information on the implications of expanding the pilot program.

Schwartz was unable to explain to the committee’s satisfaction why it is urgent to act now instead of at the next legislature, which goes into session in eight months.

this is the month of the national presidential nominating conventions.

Until 1956, the Republicans went first with their conventions. No one knows why, it was just usually that way (well, there was 1888, but that’s why usually). In ’56 there began an informal practice of whichever party holds the White House going last. It’s been that way ever since.

This year, the GOP will meet July 18–21 in Cleveland’s Quicken Loans Arena, with 30 Nevada delegate seats.

The Democrats will gather July 25–28 in the Wells Fargo Center and Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia, with 43 Nevada delegate seats.

It was around the time the White House party started going last that the conventions started changing and becoming less newsworthy. By the 1970s they were so settled in advance that they were scripted—literally, not figuratively. In 1972, a copy of the Republican National Convention script was accidentally delivered to a reporter.

When the mistake was discovered, he refused to give it back and a game

of keep-away ensued in a convention press trailer.

There is a school of thought in the rank and file of the political parties that elected officials get touted and pampered and spotlighted their entire lives and that the national conventions are for the rank and file. Occasionally, they have even enforced that view on the big shots. In 1976, when Nevada Democrats sent a delegation supporting presidential candidate Jerry Brown to the national convention that would nominate Jimmy Carter, Nevada Democratic leaders slated U.S. Rep. James Santini to chair the Nevada delegation. But when it came time for the delegation to elect Santini, it instead chose feminist leader Maya Miller.

Nevada’s delegations suffer from small state syndrome, but occasionally they have broken into the news.

Sometimes this derives from the fact that small state congressmembers become leading figures in Congress, as with Nevadans Paul Laxalt and Harry Reid. During Laxalt’s days in the sun as a close ally of President Ronald Reagan,

Nevadans (1) Frank Fahrenkopf chaired the Republican National Committee, (2) Cheryl Lau chaired the Republican National Convention, and (3) Laxalt himself made the nominating speeches for Reagan at the conventions.

But it is the unexpected that makes the conventions more interesting, like the time in 1968 that Richard Nixon set off a near revolt by choosing Maryland Gov. Spiro Agnew as his vice presidential running mate. With a barnburning speech, Nevada GOP chair George Abbott nominated Michigan Gov. George Romney against Agnew.

It made for great television but Agnew still won, and when Abbott arrived back in Nevada he faced efforts to fire him as party chair. (He survived it.)

In 1920, Nevadan Hugh Henry Brown made a seconding speech for Republican Herbert Hoover in Chicago.

The crowd apparently thought the Hoover demonstration had already started. The New York Times reported, “The galleries were cheering and shouting Hoover’s name when Mr. Brown of Nevada appeared on the platform.

Senator Reed Smoot of Utah, temporary presiding officer, rapped loudly for order. The harder he rapped the louder cheered the crowd. Mr. Smoot registered indignation. There was Mr. Brown wanting to say something nice about Mr. Hoover, and Mr. Hoover’s friends wouldn’t let him be heard. Finally Senator Smoot retired to the background, leaving Brown of Nevada standing there alone and unsupported, dashed hither and thither on a sea of cheers. …

He stood there, like the Golden Gate, calm, imperturbable to fate. The cheers kept on. Brown of Nevada stood it as long as he could. Then he drew a deep breath and went to it. … What he said nobody knew, perhaps few cared.”

In 1924, there was a Democratic convention that would never be forgotten. Its lessons are still followed to this day by both parties. On June 4 that year, U.S. Sen. Key Pittman of Nevada withdrew his name from consideration as chair of the convention in favor of Sen. Thomas Walsh of Montana. Pittman may have foreseen what was coming and spared himself the ordeal of presiding over the disastrous convention that was ripped apart by the influence of the Ku Klux Klan and took 16 days and 103 ballots to nominate unknown candidate John Davis. All of the party’s divisions

were broadcast on radio to the nation.

Pittman, speaking to the delegates on the League of Nations, was booed and jeered. By the time the convention ended, the Democrats were doomed. This year, the New York Times ran a piece comparing the approaching 2016 GOP convention with the Democrats’ 1924 “Klanbake.”

U.S. Rep. Walter Baring, a right wing Democrat, once passed up his party’s convention, and this year Gov. Brian Sandoval is skipping the Trump convention.

Sometimes absence is the better part of politics.

At the 1968 Democratic convention in Chicago, where the Vietnam war and a police riot in the streets tore the party up, Hubert Humphrey supporter Grant Sawyer of Nevada broke with his candidate to support a platform plank backed by antiwar forces.

In 1976, with Ronald Reagan making a serious run against an incumbent Republican president but falling short in delegate votes, he decided to try an unconventional tactic—choosing his running mate in advance. Nevada’s Paul Laxalt recommended his seat mate in the Senate, liberal Pennsylvanian Richard Schweiker. The move backfired and President Gerald Ford won the nomination.

Nevada has played lesser roles from time to time. It put Richard Nixon over the top in

the GOP balloting in Chicago in 1960. The state’s delegate Cliff McCorkle won approval of a plank in the 1980 Republican national platform calling for an end to the national 55 mile-an-hour speed limit.

The delegates who are not elected officials get very little attention, and must pay their own way, though there are reports of various ways they are subsidized. Some of them hold fundraisers for their travel and hotel costs.

The hours when the conventions do not meet spawn stories the public rarely hears. At the 1988 Democratic National Convention in Atlanta, a group of Nevada delegates kept getting terrific service at restaurants and clubs. It turned out that the striking features of delegate Juliann Wright led various maitre d’s to the conclusion that she was a Kennedy.

On the second day of the 1984 Democratic convention in San Francisco, so many people partied late the first night that of 200 people who had signed up for an early morning bus tour of the Napa wine country, only nine showed up—all of them Nevadans.

In spite of the off-hours partying, the conventions are serious business. In fact, in 1956, Judge Joseph Butler dismissed charges of scalping tickets to the Democratic National Convention against Ben Mitchell of St. Louis because, he ruled, the convention was not a place or event of amusement. Ω

Ecotourism Permaculture Pedal Tour As Lindsay Craig opened his gate, eight robust goats, named after seasonings that pair well with goat—Rosemary, Salt, Pepper, Mint—greet him as if they were puppies. A few kept approaching for a nuzzle as he strolled the yard, pointing out stout tomato plants, fruit trees, goji berry bushes, young chickens and a gawk-worthy historic treasure—a large, 1860s-era barn, its dark red paint worn by time and its frame standing strong.

Lindsay and his wife, Karen, bought the property five years ago—or as Karen said, they “started stewarding it.” She finds “own” a funny word for the way one generation takes care of land that’s existed for many millennia. The barn, she said, is one of the largest and best preserved of its era in Reno, and “owning” it led to a series of interdependent care-taking tasks.

First, the family noticed that the tall, parched weeds surrounding the barn were a fire hazard, so they got some goats to feed on the weeds. The goat droppings helped fertilize the soil to boot. The Craigs’ son, Jason, then 17, acquired a beehive. The family got more beehives, so they needed fruit trees to provide pollen for the bees. To grow trees, they needed better soil. To nurture soil, they rely on “hugoculture,” planting garden beds on top of mounds of decaying wood debris and other biomass. The stand of aging cottonwood in the corner of the yard provides plenty of wood debris. The Craigs pile fallen trunks with additional plant waste to make what eventually becomes a fertile garden bed.

“It’s full of life,” said Lindsay. “It just goes off like you can’t believe. You get the best gardens off of those.” For proper hugoculture, the Craigs needed a

little water running under the mounds, so they purchased water rights from the nearby Last Chance Ditch. Lindsay, a geologist and mining scientist, built a diversion system, so now there are mini-ditches running right under the mounds.

Continuing the tour, he picked a handful of fruit—a dozen or so translucent, yellow currants, a dark-pink raspberry and the season’s first ripe blackberry, bursting with tartness and sweetness.

“That’s what it’s supposed to be in permaculture, little buffets everywhere,” Lindsay laughed. He knows that, technically, permaculture is a set of garden-design principles that amounts to setting up an ecosystem that mimics nature’s own.

While the Craigs practice permaculture by using decomposed cottonwood and goat droppings for fertilizer and grouping veggie plants selectively to nourish each other—corn, beans and squash all together, the Native American way, said Lindsay—a group of gardeners around Reno, who stay in touch via a meetup.com group, each practice their own different versions. They’re called Permaculture Northern Nevada. One member grows fruit trees for the homeless. Another’s prize garden fixture is a mulch pile. Co-organizer Josie Luciano (an RN&R contributor) has an herb spiral.

What to watch for in the Question 2 campaign

ugust 28, 1953: California Attorney General Edmund (Pat) Brown announced that the fight against marijuana was “showing marked results.”

Voters have become accustomed to seeing and hearing the truth shaved in political campaigns. Yet it often comes in a subjective form. Yes, Candidate A is misrepresenting Candidate B about Issue C, but it’s done in a way that it hangs from the edge of truth by the fingernails and no one can actually say it was a case of lying. That word is rarely used in political campaigns.

But this year, marijuana is on the Nevada ballot again, and lying has always been essential to drug prohibition. The war on drugs could not be sustained without lying. And on the narrower issue of marijuana prohibition, lying has been there from the birth of prohibition on June 10, 1937, when in the dead of night Congress enacted the Marihuana Tax Act of 1937 which, though it only taxed marijuana, was used to arrest users for possession.

On that June 10, U.S. Rep. Carl Vinson of Georgia was the bill’s floor manager, and he was asked a direct question—“[D]oes the American Medical Association support this bill?”

Vinson said, “They support this bill one hundred percent.” It was a lie. AMA lobbyist William Woodward had testified against the measure.

Well before the birth of marijuana prohibition, there had been plenty of lies that laid the groundwork for the ban. U.S. Narcotics Commissioner Harry Anslinger, the J. Edgar Hoover of narcotics, was fond of using stories about black men and white women to mine the lode of racism in an effort to demonize marijuana. The Hearst press conducted a fact-challenged antimarijuana campaign that—get ready for some Trump deja vu—demonized Latino immigrants.

Things haven’t improved much over the years, either. When the facts are inconvenient, lie—which was what Clinton drug “czar” Barry McCaffrey did when he spoke about Holland’s enlightened drug policies. “The murder rate in Holland is double that in the United States,” he said. “The overall crime rate in Holland is probably 40 percent higher than in the United States.

That’s drugs.”

Chicago Tribune reporter Steve Chapman checked it out and found the murder rate in Holland was one-fifth that of the U.S. In addition, violent crime was “exceedingly scarce by American standards”—and marijuana use was lower than in the U.S.

The way lying was used—and still is—can be explored in our earlier article, “Lies our drug warriors told us” (RN&R, Aug. 26, 2006).

Thus, the initiative petition that seeks to make marijuana legal but regulated, much like booze, will offer special challenges. Voters can’t really count on reporters to keep the facts straight for them, if history is any indication. Not only were journalists in on the act in the early days, they are loath to be seen as soft on drugs now. Still, there are much better fact-checking features in journalism today than ever before. Had they existed in the 1930s, marijuana might never have been made illegal. So we’ll hope for the best but also plan for the worst.

Given this history of lies in the service of prohibition, and against the possibility that this campaign will be as shot through with bad information as it has been since Virginia City enacted the nation’s first anti-drug law, we want to help voters understand what lies ahead and offer this guide.

Forms oF misinFormAtion May 1, 1971: “In some schools, says NIMH [National Institute of Mental Health], there is evidence that marijuana use has crested.” —Associated Press Not all cases for marijuana prohibition involve lying, and those that do can conceal the lying with other deceptive techniques. Some don’t lie at all.

They use facts—but manipulate them, conceal some of them, color them with loaded terms, spin them, ignore them.

To demonstrate, we will use some actual arguments employed by prohibitionists—when possible, in Nevada.

To make it as up-to-date as possible, we will frequently use essays and letters to the editor (“Economic boom ahead,” RN&R, June 30) written in the current campaign by Republican Douglas County lawyer Jim Hartman, president of a prohibitionist group called Nevadans for Responsible Drug Policy, as examples of what lies ahead.

Make it up. Some prohibitionists invent anti-marijuana information on the grounds that they are serving a higher cause. For instance, on April 2, 1970, Reno physician Wesley Hall—newly elected president of the American Medical Association—announced that the AMA would shortly release a study showing that marijuana deadened the sex drive and caused birth defects. The AMA knew nothing about this; his board did not authorize his statement, and it wasn’t true.

No such study was ever released. Much

Because I say so. Some people flatly state an assertion but provide no substantiation.

Hartman: “The result has been an alarming growth in underage marijuana use, increase in drug crimes, a continuing marijuana ‘black market’ and sales dispensaries focused on inner-city neighborhoods, as well as issues related to health, banking, pesticides and neighborhood zoning. The tax revenues raised from pot sales have not covered the regulatory overhead.”

No citations accompany these assertions. But just for the fun of it, we checked out one of them—the “increase in drug crimes.”

According to the Denver Post, “It depends on what you consider an increase.

Certainly there are more crimes being committed at marijuana stores compared to five years ago—if for no other reason than there are lots more stores. But police in Colorado have never demonstrated that marijuana businesses make their neighborhoods less safe. The slight increase in crime near medical marijuana dispensaries in Denver in the first half of 2013 was in line with overall crime trends in the city.

A three-year-old Denver police analysis showed that marijuana stores were robbed at a lower rate than banks.”

If there was an increase in drug crimes, it would presumably show up in related costs such as prisons or public safety. But the Deseret News reports “no unusual budget increases or decreases” other than normal cost of living or inflation increases for public safety, public health, or corrections since legal marijuana came to the state.

Screen out the good stuff. Some prohibitionists offer assertions which mislead by leaving out important information, cherrypicking the available information to offer the most damning interpretation.

Hartman: “The experience of legalization in Colorado has already shown that recreational marijuana use has compromised the state’s workforce and caused large companies to hire workers from other states, as would-be employees fail pre-employment drug tests. The ‘New Nevada’ is expecting to see large growth in advanced manufacturing jobs; can we afford to have Nevada jobs imperiled?”

But the New York Times reported that Colorado’s workforce was “compromised” before legal marijuana: “In Colorado, ‘to find a roofer or a painter that can pass a drug test is unheard-of,’ said Jesse Russow, owner of Avalanche Roofing & Exteriors, in Colorado Springs. That was true even before Colorado, like a few other states, legalized recreational use of marijuana.”

Hartman: “Nevada voters should now brace against millions of dollars from outof-state ‘Big Marijuana’ interests supporting Question 2 on the November ballot, the legalization of recreational marijuana.”

Nevada held special sessions of the Nevada Legislature in 1984 to change banking law for the gargantuan, out-ofstate Citicorp and in 2014 to amend state marketing law for Tesla, which isn’t exactly a local mom-and-pop operation.

The Post also reports that marijuanarelated crime accounts for less than a percent of total offenses, and that in at least one year since marijuana legalization, crime in the city has gone down.

(Denver figures are often used as an indicator of legal marijuana’s impact because marijuana remains illegal in at least 249 Colorado communities, including most of the rural areas.)

Nevada’s peculiar history comes into play in this campaign.

FY 2015-16 request includes a continuation of several initiatives that promote public health and public safety, robust regulatory oversight, law enforcement and the prevention and deterrence of youth marijuana use.” The previous year, according to Forbes, Colorado took in nearly $70 million in marijuana tax revenue from July 1, 2014 through June 30, 2015, not only covering the budget of the Marijuana Enforcement Division of the Department of Revenue, but nearly covering the $74,419,435 budget of the entire department and all its divisions.

(There are also ancillary marijuana functions in other departments but those are lesser budgets.)

Even that overstates the cost of administering the program, according to MED spokesperson Robert Goulding, who told us, “The cost of administering DOR’s marijuana related functions is projected to total nearly $10M for fiscal year 2015-16. It is important to note that marijuana ‘pays its own way’ in Colorado as marijuana related taxes, licenses and fees fund our regulatory costs as well as address some of the social considerations surrounding marijuana.”

Off the point. This one involves ad hominem attacks by prohibitionists that question the character or motives of advocates to get people to stop thinking about the issue.

Hartman: “It qualified for the ballot as a result of pot promoters paying $660,000 to mercenary signature gatherers.”

Paid signature gatherers were also used to collect signatures to remove the sales tax on equipment used by the sick and dying.

—Associated Press One particularly interesting facet of the criticism of the Nevada ballot measure so far is that prohibitionists have been so busy using the most lurid language and most emotional claims that they have missed some of the truly difficult problems Colorado has faced. For instance, impaired driving is a still unresolved problem, in

part because technology is not yet available for measuring impairment and because marijuana has different traits than other drugs such as alcohol. It has not been a large difficulty so far, because the number of driving under the influence drugs cases has not changed radically, but it still needs attention from policymakers. It’s also an issue that could use some serious discussion instead of exploitation.

Nevada’s peculiar history comes into play in this campaign, and motives may be all over the map. Supporters may simply want marijuana available for their personal use. Others may genuinely believe the drug war mentality is injuring society, just as was true of the woman who led the campaign to repeal alcohol prohibition because it was damaging so many families.

Nor are those two viewpoints always mutually exclusive.

On the other side, though business always gets its way in Nevada, many businesspeople suddenly have found their limits, now considering entrepreneurs synonymous with communists. Or they may truly feel the state’s image may be damaged. Former Assembly GOP floor leader Pat Hickey: “It may be what certain Nevada denizens have done in the past. The question before voters this November is whether or not future Nevadans want to continue

doing business modeled on the past? What I said earlier about ‘one (stupid) step backwards,’ is this: Why should the ‘New Nevada’ many of us envision have to resort to an ‘old’ reliance on the tourist industry in and around the state’s casino corridors?

Keep in mind regarding this year’s campaign dialogue that police and prosecutors are not health care experts. It’s also a useful reminder to journalists, who have a habit of pitting patients or physicians against law enforcement.

It should also be kept in mind that police are able to keep or sell forfeited assets from busts, so they have a financial stake in prohibition.

Voters should avail themselves of the internet to do their own research, instead of succumbing to vile advertising or listening only to advocates or essayists. When techniques discussed here cause alarm, check the claims out. This requires some discernment—the internet comes with a lot of chaff among the few patches of wheat.

But the effort to find the reliable information is worth it. Looking for confirmation of one’s preferences is the last thing voters should do.

In the end, what Nevada voters will have to decide is whether government prohibition, which creates both the lure of the forbidden (incentivizing use) and public demand (incentivizing a black market) is a remedy for anything— whether history shows prohibition to have been a success.

A Brüka Theatre takes original work to New York International Fringe Festival

guy who’s about to commit suicide is interrupted by a fugitive bank robber who wants to take him hostage at gunpoint.

Though it sounds like a card pulled from a deck of Table Topics or the opening to a dark joke, it’s actually the premise of New Canula, an original play by Gary Cremeans of Brüka Theatre.

Yet it’s a play that could actually be described as anything but dark, and its future may be very bright indeed.

LoneLy HeArts CLub Billed as “an original, unromantic, feel-good dramedy,” New Canula tells the story of two lonely men at the end of their ropes who find solace in their new, unlikely friendship.

John Wayne McGillicuddy (played by Cremeans himself) gave himself the “cool” nickname of J. Dubbs to impress his friends, but in the end he still has none.

Alone, unsuccessful and going nowhere, he’s about to end it all when Bull (played by David Simpson) breaks into the apartment waving a gun and threatening to kill its inhabitant if he doesn’t do as instructed. The only problem is that he’s unwittingly given J. Dubbs his fondest wish.

Through the course of the play, the men realize they are more alike than they would have imagined, and their new friendship gives them redemption and hope.

Gary Cremeans came up with the idea as a college student and originally wrote it as a short story under a different title. Then, in 2014, producing artistic director Mary Bennett was looking for submissions to Brüka’s annual original short-play invitational, the Biggest Little Theatre Festival. Bennett approached Cremeans, a company member, about submitting something, and he decided to dust off this story for the stage.

“I’d never written a play, but I figured, ‘How hard could it be?’”

Cremeans laughed. “I had no idea what I was getting myself into …

I didn’t know if anyone would laugh or hate it or what.”

Meanwhile, Bennett was wrestling with some real-life personal heartbreak. Her mother, Mary Ann Bennett, was terminally ill and in hospice care.

“My mom was a nurse, and she had this crazy sense of humor,” Bennett said, explaining that Mary Ann was wearing a canula constantly to assist her with breathing. “She would describe hospice for me, with nurses and visitors coming and going, and she said she felt like she was holding court. People would come in and tell her stories, or they’d write her letters and I’d read them to her, or she’d dictate letters to me and I’d write them for her … She would joke that she was living in this magical place called ‘New Canula.’”

In her darkest moments before her mother’s death,

Bennett shared these stories with Cremeans, and he liked the idea of New Canula, a place where even the darkest moments in life are imbued with light and hope and humor.

“It’s this place you can go where things will be better,” Bennett said. “You get to a place in life where everything’s going wrong. You want a place of hope, and this represents that idea in a really great way. There is a place you can go where there’s hope.”

It became the perfect title for Cremeans’ play, which honors Mary Ann Bennett as well as his own Grandma Betty, whose witty aphorisms and lessons for life are woven into the story.

“J. Dubbs is constantly referring to her good manners, how this criminal came in without being invited, how he’s using the lord’s name in vain,” Cremeans said. “It’s really sweet but not sappy in its portrayal of how these two men are dealing with their situations, and how this onehour meeting changes their lives.”

“So much humor is divisive and negative, but this isn’t,” Bennett said. “This is a kind play.”

Fringe binge Bull (David Simpson) is accustomed to having people protest when he threatens their lives, but in the case of John Wayne McGillicuddy (playwright Gary Cremeans) things worked out a little differently.

That first production of New Canula in November 2014 was met with enormously positive response and suggestions that it should be entered into some festivals. Bennett took those suggestions and submitted the play to the highly selective New York International Fringe Festival in January 2015. Though it wasn’t accepted that year, a second submission in January 2016 struck gold. It became only the second show from Brüka to be accepted to the festival (the first was The Medea Project in 2012).

The three involved— producer/director Bennett, Cremeans and Simpson, who happens to be Bennett’s husband—opted to improve their Fringe game by taking New Canula to the annual, open-access Hollywood Fringe Festival in June, where they were at the time of this writing.

New York alone will be about $15,000 in all, Bennett said.

The company has actively been working to raise money to fund this dream, starting with a GoFundMe campaign. And they’re pinning high hopes on two fundraiser performances of New Canula on July 10.

The New Canula trio have committed to supporting this effort with everything they have, financial and otherwise, because they have seen the rewards such efforts can reap. They’re among the many theater companies who have returned home from previous Fringe festivals ready to mount the new works they caught there at their own theaters.

“If your show is popular, you can generate audiences, so your company is winning,” Bennett explained. “But also the theater will be interested in keeping you there because they’ll make money from it.”

The potential for having New Canula selected to remain in New York, picked up by other theater troupes or even optioned by Samuel French or another licensing company is worth the effort and costs to get themselves there, they said. So is the benefit for Reno’s art community at large.

“One of the neatest things is that many people we know from Brüka have gone on to New York from Reno, and we’re now working with them to get them to help us, to represent us out there,” Bennett said. “We’re connecting the dots with people we know and creating a larger base for people to perform, to band together and create a community that supports the show there. … We’re starting to get Reno on the cultural map.” Ω

“New York is really the clincher to being able to get this show touring, but we needed to find out the environment,” Bennett said. “Hollywood is so local, 90 percent of the groups registered are local companies, and they all know each other and have been here forever. We’ve learned so much, but it’s still teaching us about New York Fringe, about new plays being done regionally and nationally.

And the huge thing is that it’s representing Reno and Brüka in a larger place.”

The Hollywood festival ran a full week in June, and Fringe NYC goes two weeks, August 12-28.

Room tones Reno Design Now Tessa Miller was surprised to receive an email from Paul Baker Prindle, gallery director at the University of Nevada, Reno, inviting her to take part in an exhibit on campus. Miller owns The Nest, a boutique on Keystone Avenue. Much of the work she does is creative—merchandising vintage clothing and furniture, consulting with clients on interior designs—but it’s not the kind of work that typically would be shown by an academic institution.

Sheppard Gallery, the main art exhibition space on campus, is more likely to show national artists, recently including names as big as New York photographer Jack Pierson and Canadian ceramic sculptor Brendan Tang. But Baker Prindle, inspired by a simple observation, decided to venture outside the gallery’s usual purview.

“The truth is, most art is made to be lived with on the domestic scale,” he said.

He invited Miller—along with interior and landscape designers from LOORR Home, Buds & Blooms, and Sierra Water Gardens—to select pieces from the permanent collection, then design rooms around their preferred artworks. The rooms will be displayed during a weekend pop-up exhibit in the Jot Travis Building galleries. Garret Barmore from UNR’s mining science museum is also expected to contribute some furniture, accouterments and ideas.

Thinking about artwork in a domestic setting is right up Miller’s alley. She’s a University of Santa Clara graduate with degrees in philosophy and Spanish. Upon graduation, she decided, “Silicon Valley was not for me. I moved back here as soon as possible.” Her dad suggested a career path that hadn’t occurred to her, buying a retail store.

furniture business,” Miller said. “It’s not like I had a huge interest in furniture before that.”

“I ended up loving it,” she said. “It was my calling.” She ran that business, which was in Sparks, for a few years, then started tailoring her inventory to better reflect her own taste.

“I really love vintage—vintage stuff that’s well made,” she said. “It has style.”

She opened The Nest in 2009.

When Miller visited the UNR collection, she was immediately drawn to paintings

by Craig Sheppard. Unbeknownst to her, Sheppard was a revered Reno painter who chaired UNR’s art department in the 1940s and ’50s and happens to be the Sheppard Gallery’s namesake.

“I’m just pulling out art and saying I want this piece and this piece and that piece,” she said. “He’s got a really cool mid-century, abstract vibe that I really like.”

She selected about 20 pieces and plans to design three different rooms around them, using as many paintings as possible in each room.

“What’s cool about this installation is—it’s how I work anyway,” said Miller.

“I just look at whatever catches my eye, and I grab it, and I build stuff around it.

The message I wanted to portray is that art is accessible and it’s everywhere, and it doesn’t have to just be in a gallery. I wanted to make the rooms look like a home. My vision was to make a space that looks like it was lived in.” She’s considering real-life touches such as pairs of shoes strewn here and there, kids’ toys on the floor, or maybe a half-eaten bowl of cereal.

“If you go into a gallery it’s like a pristine room,” she said, “but people don’t really live like that.” Ω

The BFG

And with this, the startling run of Steven Spielberg duds continues. After delivering two of the dullest movies of his career (Lincoln, Bridge of Spies) Spielberg does the almost impossible; he makes Roald Dahl completely boring. Oscar-winner Mark Rylance delivers a motion-capture CGI performance as the central character, the Big Friendly Giant, that results in more yawns than smiles. His giant captures dreams and blows them into the sleeping residents of London. On one of his excursions, he kidnaps Sophie (Ruby Barnhill), and takes her to the land of giants, where most giants are meat eaters. Luckily, he’s a vegetarian, but he’s being bullied by a group of bad giants led by Jemaine Clement in the film’s most fun motion-capture performance.

Despite a winning performance from Barnhill, a true star in the making, the film drags on and on, trying to get by on big special effects rather than an engaging story. Everything feels a little off for Spielberg. A visit to the Queen’s house, which should be bizarrely funny and subversive, winds up feeling awkward and uncomfortable. The whole movie seems to be playing it safe in Dahl land, as if it is E.T. in Dahl land, and it throws the tone completely off.

It doesn’t help that John Williams rips off his own E.T. score. It never clicks. Nothing really works, yet again, for Spielberg, a director who seems to have momentarily lost his mojo, but if he makes stinkers for the rest of his life, he’s still one of the most amazing men to sit in the director’s chair. That said, here’s to hoping for a return to form with one of his next ventures, which allegedly include another crack at Indiana Jones.

Central Intelligence

While it doesn’t boast much along the lines of originality, this winds up being an above average action/comedy buddy movie thanks to its stars, Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart. The guys belong together. The plot feels like a bunch of parts from other movies cobbled together to make a whole. It has elements of Lethal Weapon, Grosse Pointe Blank, Just Friends and even a little Sixteen Candles, all stitched together, albeit capably, by director Rawson Marshall Thurber (We’re the Millers).

It’s a well-oiled movie Frankenstein. Johnson and Hart are a strong screen duo, with Johnson actually scoring most of the laughs. Hart, who certainly chips in on the laughs front, actually delivers one of the more well rounded, warm performances of his career. He plays Calvin, the most popular guy in high school who grows up to be humdrum. Johnson plays Bob, a former obese guy who Calvin took pity on. Bob grows up to be a rogue CIA agent who looks like the Rock. The two wind up on an adventure that, of course, eventually leads to their high school reunion.

Independence Day: Resurgence

I enjoyed the goofy, funny, balls-out alien invasion movie that was Independence Day (1996). The film was dumber than a stoned golden retriever in a Harvard calculus class, but Will Smith, Jeff Goldblum and, yes, Randy Quaid made the grandiose stupidity somewhat of a blast. Two decades after the original, Independence Day: Resurgence finally arrives, without Smith, who probably didn’t think the check was big enough. While the original was a stupid blast, the sequel is the equivalent of a nasty two-hour alien fart.

Goldblum, Bill Pullman and Brent Spiner return for alien nonsense that is fast paced yet dull, and utterly void of laughs. It’s evident in the first 10 minutes that the movie will somehow manage to be lethargic even though the editing is frantic, and lots of things are exploding.

Returning director Roland Emmerich is clearly not on his disaster-epic game. It’s a wasteful effort, where camp has been replaced by total ineptitude, and the performers look lost. And, let’s face it, Liam Hemsworth is no Will Smith.

He’s a dud, the movie’s a dud, and the franchise needs to stop now.

The Shallows

This sequel to Finding Nemo goes a little darker than its predecessor. Ellen DeGeneres returns as Dory, the lovable fish with short-term memory loss. An event triggers a memory of family in her little brain, and she sets off on a journey to find her mom and dad (voiced by Diane Keaton and Eugene Levy). Pals Marlin (Albert Brooks) and Nemo (Hayden Rolence) join Dory on her quest, which culminates in an aquarium amusement park graced with voice announcements by the actual Sigourney Weaver. Dory winds up in a touch pond, in a bucket of dead fish, and swimming around in a lot of dark pipe work. In some ways, this is to Finding Nemo what The Empire Strikes Back was to Star Wars. It’s a darker, slightly scarier chapter, that still delivers on the heartwarming elements and laughs.

Newton Knight (Matthew McConaughey), a Confederate army medic, decides he’s had enough and deserts. He returns to Mississippi where his people are being harassed by looting soldiers. He winds up in the swamps with escaped slaves where they form a pact, and eventually create a militia to rebel against the Confederacy. Based on a true story, director Gary Ross definitely delivers on the brutality and terrors of the Civil War. McConaughey is powerful in the central role, as is Mahershala Ali as Moses, leader of the escaped slaves. The film stumbles a bit in trying to do a too much.

There are courtroom scenes 85 years after the Civil War’s where a relative of Knight is in a civil rights dispute. These scenes feel completely out of place, and they sort of muck up the film’s ending (things just come to an awkward stop). It’s too bad, because the movie winds up being good instead of great. The battle scenes are harrowing, the tensions are frightening and real, and there’s not a bad performance in the lot. Yet, because Ross has overstuffed the film, aspects like the rise of the KKK are almost glossed over. This project, with its dual storylines and many plot points, probably would’ve worked better as an extended series on HBO.

After the misstep that was Only God Forgives, director Nicolas Winding Refn gets things back on track with this, perhaps the most toxic and nasty film ever made about the modeling industry. Jesse (Elle Fanning) moves to L.A. to become a model. She’s underage, naïve and lost, but finds a helping hand in Ruby (Jena Malone), a makeup artist who knows what it’s like to be the new girl in town.

As her career begins to take off, Jesse begins to gain confidence to a fault, and a couple of other models (Bella Heathcote and Abbey Lee) develop sinister intentions to go with their envy of Jesse’s spectacular looks. Refn mesmerizes yet again—his Drive remains one of the best films of the past decade—combining stunning visuals and an excellent soundtrack to go with the outstanding performances from Fanning, Malone, Heathcote and Lee. Keanu Reeves has a small but memorable role as a sleazy hotel manager, while Alessandro Nivola is most memorable as a fashion designer who must have Jesse for his show. Refn is working in very dark, cynical satire here, with elements of horror mixed in for good measure.

Blake Lively, whose best role until now was the secretary in that SNL “Potato Chip” sketch, is terrific as Nancy, a medical school dropout who goes to a secret beach in Mexico in the wake of her mother’s death. She sets out for a day of surfing and reflection in what she thinks is a completely solitary setting (with the exception of a couple of other friendly surfers). Turns out, there’s a big-assed Great White shark, and this is its territory, and no trespassers are allowed, even if they are as pretty as Blake Lively. As shark movies go, this is a good one, with decent CGI effects, a couple of tense shark attacks, and a constant level of terror that never lets up. The only thing really keeping this from being “very good” rather than “nice and good” is the ending, which made me laugh a laugh I shouldn’t have laughed.

Deep space Moons of Vega Music never hits quite the same way as it does during adolescence. During that period of intense growth, we appreciate deeply the discovery of exciting new sounds.

For Moons of Vega, adolescence didn’t just bring new music to their ears. Hardcore punk, alternative rock and grunge were bringing teens together in a way that popular music never had before. With distorted guitars, heavy drums, and deeply personal, heartfelt lyrics, the youth of America were given a license to their own voice.

“I was just hooked on making sound,” said drummer Don Piletic. “When you find out that playing music is something that you can do that’s in your soul, and is not necessarily academic, you know, for me, that sparked my interest quite a bit.

For Piletic, learning the drums wouldn’t come until after high school. He honed his chops on his favorite jazz records, then went on to play in the Bay Area rockabilly scene. The internet, as well as a relocation to Minden, brought him into the vicinity of Moons of Vega, who were in the process of finding a new drummer.

“We crafted a very specific Craigslist advert,” said guitarist Chris Maciejewski.

“We said what all our influences were and said, ‘If you don’t like the same bands, just don’t bother.’” He found this to be a tried and true method of locating like-minded people.

“That’s how we all met,” Maciejewski said. “Bryce and I, we actually met at an audition for another band. We didn’t quite like the other band, but we saw something in common. So we started writing together.”

Non-musical art forms and performance mediums can be just as telling as a person’s music taste. Maciejewski and guitarist Bruce Ruff both draw inspiration from photography and visual art. They see the common ground in both forms’ abilities to capture the feeling of a particular moment.

With photography, a specific time and place is immortalized in a visual representation.

For music, a performance can capture the emotion of a period of time and the energy of the specific place where the songs are being performed, differing from photography only in its ephemerality.

For bassist and vocalist Bryce Becker, stand-up comedy lends a unique perspective. He sees a correlation between the ways that musicians and comedians can ride the waves of energy within a room, when to push and when to pull. For both types of performers, reading a room is key.

However, he notes that there is one critical difference in the mediums, one that makes it more difficult for musicians to effectively debrief their performance.

“You know, I’ve been doing this for more than 20 years, played a lot of shows.

Never been booed offstage, never been booed,” said Becker. “What you will get is indifference. And that’s almost worse, because then you’re dismissed. If you hate me, you’re listening. With music, either they’re into it, or they don’t care.”

Thankfully, Moons of Vega approach each show with a passion for live performance, aiming to impact audiences with their high-energy sound.

“It’s about people getting together,” said Maciejewski. “It’s about giving people a feeling. If you can do that in some way, you can be successful. It doesn’t get better than that.”

Becker added, “We’ll play at a gas station if you ask us.” Ω

Fasten your deceit belt I’m a 44-year-old woman who’s been dating a successful actor for a year. When we met, he told me he was 35. Well, in picking up a prescription for him, I discovered he’s actually 42! I’m relieved—but miffed that he lied. I’ve felt uneasy about being so much older (especially because his previous girlfriend was 24). He said he’d been meaning to say something and he was glad I found out. He explained that as an actor, it’s important to be viewed as young. (His agent doesn’t even know his real age.) He seems to be a good person, but I’m wondering what else he’s lied about. I don’t lie, and I don’t want to be with someone who is a liar.

Wow, so that’s your real weight on your driver’s license?

The truth is, we all lie—yes, all of us —which is why social psychologist Bella DePaulo explains in her research on lying that people can’t be tossed into “one of two moral bins, one for people who are honest and the other for the liars.” DePaulo explains that you are lying whenever “you intentionally try to mislead someone.” This includes telling your friend “I completely forgot you were performing at the coffeehouse!” or assuring her that her new haircut looks “cool and edgy” and not like a small animal that got hit by a car.

However, there are different kinds of lies, and the kind your boyfriend told is an “instrumental lie”—a strategic lie people use to take a shortcut to something they want. This kind of lie is common to Machiavellian personalities—schemers who manipulate other people to get their way. It’s also linked to having crappy relationships, since you can’t very well be close to somebody who’s frequently pretending to be somebody else.

Ruh-roh, huh? Maybe not. Context matters— including why he lied, why he didn’t tell you and whether his lie has lots of brothers and sisters to keep it company. If he doesn’t seem to be a big truth shaver, consider that this age fibbie may be a necessary evil—a “cost of doing business” lie. In poetry, “Beauty is truth, truth beauty.” In Hollywood, truth is unemployment.

Why didn’t he tell you? Maybe because he didn’t tell you, and then he still hadn’t told you, and then it seemed he was way late in telling you. If you don’t see a pattern of lying, maybe this is a sign, not that he’s a terrible person but that he dreaded disappointing you. You and he could even turn this incident into a positive thing—an opportunity to come up with a policy for honesty in your relationship.

What’s especially important is making it a safe place for telling the truth—pledging to sit down and talk stuff out instead of going all explodypants over it.

I’m a man who respects science and tries to live rationally, and I’m dating this truly great woman who, unfortunately, is into astrology, energy healing, past lives and other ridiculousness. I try to be open-minded, and I’ve been telling myself, “Hey, people can be different and still be together.”

A lack of respect for your partner’s beliefs is the starting line for contempt—the amped-up form of disgust—which marriage researcher John Gottman finds is the single best predictor that a relationship will tank. Radio star Greg Glover is a former record label talent scout from New York City turned Portland Radio DJ. His weekend show, The Bottom 40, has been on the air for more than 12 years. Glover calls the show “nondenominational radio” and uses it to feature new music and deep tracks from alternative artists. Now, the show plays on KJIV, 89.1 FM, in the Truckee Meadows on Saturday nights at 10 p.m. KJIV is a division of Open Sky Radio. RN&R writer Bruce Van Dyke is a board member.

How did the show end up on air in Reno?

My best friend here in Portland is Franz Spielvogel, and he is the CEO of Laughing Planet. He went to school at UNR and lived in Reno. And he now lives here in Portland. … He was a fan of The Bottom 40, so he reached out via email and we met up for a beer and we just became friends. …

When he was in college there in Reno he worked for … a restaurant that was called Deux Gros Nez. … and the place was owned by Tim Healion. …

Exploiting tragedy On May 19, Egypt Air 804 crashed into the Mediterranean Sea, spelling the end for all 66 people on board. Just a couple of hours after this news broke, our boy Donaldo tweeted “looks like yet another terrorist attack. Airplane departed from Paris. When we will get tough, smart, and vigilant?

Great hate and sickness.”

In the six weeks after the crash, no terrorist organization has taken credit. USA Today’s July 4 update on this disaster read, “Investigators found heat damage on parts of the wreckage but have yet to conclude what caused the crash.” The article also says the Paris prosecutor’s office has opened an inquiry into the crash, but at this time it’s not a terrorist investigation.

I bring this all up to point out that Trump, as a bloviating developer and TV celebrity, can be as loose of a cannon as he wants, and nobody gives a shit. But as a man

who is one election away from being the leader of the United States, his tendencies to “shoot from the lip,” previously thought charming and entertaining, aren’t much of either. Now, they just look like the oafish remarks of an impulsive dipshit, about as presidential as a prospector’s spittoon.

• A couple of comments here in the wake of the end of season six to all my Westerosi brethren and sistren, notes to all us Game of Thrones geeks who find that, in the end, we are all helplessly hooked.

I mean, Arya, for example. Look, I realize that to fully enjoy GoT one has to bring a certain amount of reality suspension that makes it possible to not get too hung up on those moments where you might exclaim, “oh, now come on!” But with Arya’s thread, I had problems. I mean, The Waif stabbed the absolute stuffing out of Little Mizz

No One on that bridge, just pierced her big time in the belly, and then twisted the knife! OK? So what the hell was Arya doing the week after her guts got shredded, hopping out of bed and running all over Braavos, sliding under fruit carts and jumping from walls to escape the determined and murderous Waif.

But all things considered, you take the lame with the awesome in this show, and Holy Hugeness of Hodor, Cersei’s fiery revenge in the season finale was the kind of stupendous spectacle that makes it worthwhile. All hail Cersei, Queen Bitch of Westeros! And her rap to Septa Umella, the Dame of Shame, was beyond great, flat out juicy.

Cleanup in King’s Landing— watch out for that bigass Bell of Baelor!—will take about nine months. And then, season seven will be upon us, which promises to be crazy ass! Dragons and zombies and wargs, oh my! Ω
