Gun show odyssey

Welcome to this week’s Reno News & Review.

I’m very happy to announce that Kris Vagner has joined the RN&R staff as our new arts editor. She’ll oversee, and often write, our arts features, like Art of the State and Musicbeat, as well as other stories.

She actually had the job once before, for about a year circa 2004. Since then, she’s been one of our most reliable freelance contributors. If you’ve read us regularly over the last decade, you’ve probably come across her byline more than twice. For example, she wrote the Arts & Culture feature story about the Biggest Little Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence last week, and even more to the point, she wrote this week’s cover story.

Check it out on page 13.

She’s arguably the best writer about visual art that we’ve ever had grace our pages. She writes about art in a way that’s critically informed and aesthetically astute without ever being stuffy, pompous or dry. She’s deeply invested in the local art community. She knows most of the local artists and gallery curators. And, as this week’s cover story demonstrates, she can also write about subjects not directly related to art with clarity and integrity.

We’re lucky to have her aboard.

I attended my first gun show in Reno Saturday at the convention center. The Wild West still lives.

Aside from the $8 parking fee and the $12 entrance fee, it is safer and thriftier to buy from a local firearms dealer.

I did buy a hand gun. It was a Ruger 380 LCP lightweight with a price tag of $229. Problems began.

The salesman obtained a boxed firearm from under the counter. He then took me to a table. Another salesman asked for my driver’s license. He filled out a sales ticket.

As he talked to me, a sales lady nearby began speaking to me at the same time.

The salesman slid the sales ticket toward me, instructing me to sign, which I did. All the while, the saleswoman continued attempting to sell me accessories. The salesman placed my driver’s license over the center of the sales ticket thereby obscuring part of the writing.

I paid $304.31 in cash, including tax and transfer fee. The salesman then escorted me several booths away to another table while he carried the boxed firearm, my driver’s license and the sales ticket.

He turned the items over to yet another person whom I later learned was a Transfer dealer.

I filled out a transfer form.

The Transfer dealer made a quick background check. She then signed her part of the transfer form, stapled her business card and another paper called an “OK to Release” tag to the sales ticket. She returned my driver’s license and handed me the boxed handgun and sales ticket.

I exited the gun show perplexed.

It was Sunday morning when I realized I was charged $249, not $229 as advertised. The sales ticket did not state the name, or the address, or the email address, or the telephone number of the selling dealer!

I contacted the Transfer dealer protesting that I was charged the wrong amount. She said she was

just the Transfer dealer and could do nothing about the sale. I asked for the name of the Selling dealer.

I Googled his name to discover he was a dealer in Arizona.

I suspected, but cannot prove, that the overcharge was a bait-andswitch ploy. To recap, I had been herded from the display case to a table, spoken to by two people at the same time which distracted and confused me while the sales ticket was slid before me for my signature.

Then I was taken to yet another table several booths away for more paperwork. I was not handed the sales ticket until all the paperwork was done.

On Monday, I noticed on the sales ticket a faint hand stamp stating: All sales are final Used Firearms sold as is $50.00 restocking fee Warranty thru Manufacturer I question the legality of hand stamping “All sales are final” followed by the “$50.00 restocking fee.” Which is it? All sales are final or a restocking fee?

After citing Nevada fraud and abuse statutes, Erik the Transfer dealer, the Selling dealer and I were on a conference call. The Seller said the reason the gun was $249 was because it was on sale.

I told the dealer if that was his answer, then the discussion was over. He suddenly added that I could return the gun for full refund, which I did.

from Prescott, Phoenix or Tucson to Reno, pay for transportation, food and lodging, pay a hundred-dollar booth fee and pay a fee to the Transfer dealer, and yet sell guns cheaper than Scheels or Bizarre Guns. It is not possible unless they are dumping inventory or pushing seconds, or perhaps doing bait-andswitch cons. Customers also dish out $20 in parking and entrance fees before they even enter the show. It’s a lose-lose situation for buyers.

Regarding the Transfer dealer, their shop was [a] front for enabling out of state sellers and individuals to dump guns in Nevada. That practice should be eliminated!

Washoe County Gun Shows need oversight. An out of state dealer should not be able to come into our state and set up a booth unless they have a license or permit to do business in Nevada. Gun show dealers should be required to display their name, address and contact information on all paperwork.

Gun dealers should be required to reveal any known defect in a firearm. Even automobile dealers are required to reveal known vehicle

Clarification Re “School grants case nears high court” (News, May 26): In an article about Nevada’s new program that pays parents to take children out of public schools, we said that the Reno Gazette-Journal reported that “about 80 percent of the people who have applied for the grants under the new Nevada program have median incomes greater than the average median income.” The RGJ actually reported that the “vast majority of applicants—80 percent—live in neighborhoods where median household incomes outpace the state median of $51,000.”

There were no death threats.

There was only spin.

After all the ink and all the airtime about the May 14 Nevada Democratic Convention, it comes down to this, from available evidence—smears. And those smears did damage. Bernie Sanders and his supporters were tarnished and embittered, reducing their value to Democrats in autumn.

If there is one rule for political conventions, it is, “Treat the losers like royalty.” Holding a vote on Robert’s Rules would have cost the convention officers nothing and would have changed the whole tenor of the subsequent proceedings. Behaving that way would also have sped up the convention by reducing the protests.

At every turn, party officials—who controlled the convention—should have been treating the Sanders delegates with kid gloves, bringing them into the process, allowing their motions, and then voting them down.

Instead, the amateurish officials embittered an enthusiastic, optimistic group of people who had earned their places on the floor by treating them like intruders and slandering them. There is a term in the Sanders camp for the workers who have no intention of switching to Clinton in the fall. It is Bernie or Bust. A few Bernie or Busters arrived at the Paris Las Vegas Hotel. A lot more departed.

Their number should have decreased after a well-run, professional gathering. Instead, it increased.

Then there are the speech issues. It ill behooves a political party founded by a man who sponsored attacks on his opponent as a hermaphrodite to treat distasteful but purely political criticism in emails and other messages OPINION

I think the whole thing is a bunch of B.S. Really! Haven’t we got other problems in this country other than deciding what bathroom? Oh, you know, we have the illegal alien problem. We have the ISIS problem. We have unemployment problems, and we’re worried about who uses the bathroom? Let’s get real in this United States.

as “harassment,” much less as “death threats.” What was wielded was words, and the right to employ them in protest is hallowed in the United States of America.

Those chairs: They are not folding chairs from a bridge game. They are casino chairs—very heavy, inflexible, stackable, with steel structures, not easily thrown.

Throw them and someone could get killed. No one was even injured by the phantom chair throwing.

Before the convention even started, Nevada Democratic officials showed their hand with rules that were designed for manipulation. Why would anyone write a rule providing for all votes to be voice votes—and then disallow motions for real votes? Something about this reeks of boss rule and a party whose rank and file is held in contempt.

Naturally, this time-tested method for manipulating conventions raised the suspicions of the Sanders people, who had an online petition seeking rules changes well before the convention even started, making it plain that their discontent did not begin when the convention went into session and the Clinton forces won a 33-vote majority.

Before the Nevada Democratic Convention, Sen. Sanders was one of the few figures in this campaign whose stature grew with the public over the months, and his supporters were widely admired. The Nevada Democratic Party used its public relations apparatus to make Sanders and his campaign look bad, reducing the value of his eventual endorsement of Hillary Clinton, reducing the number of his supporters willing to reconcile themselves to the Clinton candidacy, reducing the good will in the upcoming national convention. That was quite a weekend’s work.

The Nevada Democratic Party’s spin apparatchiks should not expect a thank-you note from Clinton any time soon. Ω |

Keep vitriol out of an issue Never underestimate the power and determination of a mother when it comes to protecting her child.

That’s the thought that went through my mind when I learned that the Washoe County School District’s policy on bathroom use by transgender students was being by promoted as a stellar example by Sheila Leslie the U.S. Department of Education.

The discussion of our local policy was in the context of a directive from the Obama administration that every school in the nation must allow access to the bathroom of a child’s self-identified gender or risk the loss of federal education dollars.

While there’s plenty of praise to go around on our local response to an issue that is tearing some communities apart, it was mothers who made the difference in Washoe County.

After learning that some transgender children were avoiding food and water during the school day in order to lessen the risk they might have to use a bathroom, the mothers banded together to demand a solution.

They were joined in their quest by local activists from the Transgender Allies Group, who pointed out the policy of forcing transgender students to use an alternate bathroom, such as a facility in the school nurse’s office or faculty lounge, violated Title IX, the federal law that prohibits sex discrimination or harassment. To its credit, the Washoe County School District worked with the mothers and the activists to construct a policy that is now a national example, allowing students to choose the bathroom or locker room of their identified gender and directing school staff to use the student’s desired name and pronoun.

It didn’t happen overnight, and the change was not welcomed by all.

But the willingness of mothers like Elvira Diaz—who permitted her son, Christian, to become the public face of transgender identity—certainly helped. A sensitive feature article in the Reno Gazette-Journal about local transgender children and their parents educated our community about the issues these families face every day.

Maylath persevered even when faced with hurtful attacks and ignorant statements from many state legislators, frightened by someone different from themselves.

Nationally, many were surprised when Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, R-Florida, declared her support for transgender rights until they learned that her son was transgender. In a public service announcement, the conservative Congresswoman explains: “We loved him as Amanda, and now as Rodrigo.”

Although the Washoe County School District was enlightened on transgender rights, it was distressing to see how another mother, Katherine Gutierrez, was treated when she asked for copies of her child’s file to review the circumstances surrounding her son’s experience at school.

He has Down syndrome, and there were accusations of maltreatment, including name calling and an overly aggressive, physical approach by a teacher. District personnel said they’d be happy to provide her the documents for a mere $373.50, deciding to

strictly enforce a state law that allows the district to charge 50 cents a page for copies.

Under pressure from mothers and disability advocates, the district relented but only because it suddenly discovered Gutierrez had submitted her request just before implementation of the new policy, which will now be applied to any document request by a parent. According to reporting by the Reno GazetteJournal, no other school district in the state charges parents for copies of a child’s records.

Gutierrez was willing to discuss the incident with the newspaper, exposing a policy that clearly has a detrimental effect on records requests, especially those from lower income families. One can readily imagine the five new school board members elected in November will revisit this policy and hopefully abandon it in favor of transparency.

If they don’t, you can count on these moms to keep fighting for their kids. Ω

Tales of two conventions The Nevada State Republican Party convention was held in Reno May 13-15, the same weekend the Nevada Democratic Party held its state convention in Las Vegas.

While some insist no chairs were thrown by the Sanders delegates in Las Vegas, they can’t deny the by Brendan Trainor Democratic Party appears more divided than anyone could have predicted. They also can’t deny that despite Donald Trump’s intemperate language, most of the authoritarian actions lately are coming from the left. Organizing to prevent a candidate from speaking is the same rights-violating tactic we see on college campuses where free expression is subordinate to the supposed right to a “safe space.”

Maybe the Sandersnistas don’t actually threaten violence, but the Bernie Boys’ Twitter and Instagram has insults even Trump could learn from.

Dialogue with a lefty often consists of your policy question followed by a guy wearing a Che Gueverra T-shirt commanding you to perform a physically impossible sex act.

The Republican Party’s insurgent businessman and reality TV show personality, Donald Trump, is a winner. On the other hand, while Sen. Sanders has fought an excellent campaign, there is little chance he will be the Democrats’ presidential nominee.

The Ron Paul Revolutions in 2008 and 2012 did not get as far as Trump or Sanders, but Rep. Paul’s insurgent campaign in 2008 caught Nevada GOP officials unprepared.

They then panicked and shut the state convention down, leading to T-shirts that cried “Don’t Gavel Me Bro.” In 2012 the Ron Paul Nevada delegates were blatantly ignored at the Republican National Convention.

Dissatisfaction with the Republican establishment in Nevada goes back at least to the late Aaron Russo’s 1998 attempt to run for governor that resulted in another memorable state convention disruption. Kenny Guinn won the nomination and governorship but then saddled Nevada with the

largest tax increase in its history until Sandoval’s commerce tax was passed last session. The more things change, the more they remain the same in politics.

The Nevada Republican Convention this year welcomed Trump supporters. The voting on the first day of the convention was electronic. Every delegate—I was one—was given a hand-held electronic keypad, and the votes were recorded electronically. This greatly speeded up the procedure and eliminated the long lines and delays that paper ballots cause. The convention was a success, and the organizers deserve a lot of credit.

The more than a thousand delegates present made it very clear throughout that they were angered

by Gov. Sandoval’s commerce tax, passed in a Republican-controlled legislature. They passed a resolution denouncing Republicans who voted for the tax. State Controller Ron Knecht, who is running the commerce tax repeal initiative, spoke at the convention.

Gov. Sandoval and those legislators who voted for the tax did not appear at the convention to face the delegates.

The convention adopted a detailed platform, reflective of freedom loving Nevada. The social planks were kept to a minimum.

The story of the convention was the split between the grassroots activists and the Republican political class that has now, under different governors, passed the two largest tax increases in Nevada history. The real battle in 2016 Nevada Republican politics will be to unseat those Republicans who voted for the tax, put the commerce tax repeal initiative petition on the ballot, and elect more constitutional conservatives who will adhere to the new state platform while in office. The Nevada GOP has to show it really, really stands for low taxes and limited government. If it doesn’t, Americans will support a party that does. Ω

Conventional wisdom A survey of some state and county Democratic convention rules suggests Nevada’s Democratic Party was not out of the mainstream in blocking the Sanders’ campaign effort to substitute Robert’s Rules of Order for the homegrown set of rules devised by Nevada party leaders at the May 14 convention.

But it also finds that Robert’s Rules are widely used, that the use of voice votes for all votes is rare and possibly unknown among other states, and that Nevada uses super-majorities more often than most states surveyed. The Nevada Democratic rules contain two requirements for two-thirds vote thresholds and one for a three-fourths threshold. And another rule reads, “All votes taken at the state convention shall be by voice vote unless otherwise provided.”

Some commentators have said that because Clinton had a majority in the Nevada convention, convention rules mattered little, that her campaign would work its will. But if the motion to switch to Robert’s Rules had been a majority vote motion instead of a supermajority, the Sanders campaign would only have had to get 17 of Clinton’s votes. Since some Clinton delegates believed the Sanders delegates were being badly treated, that would have been within reach. But the two-thirds vote requirement plus the refusal of convention officers to use other than voice votes left the Sanders campaign with no recourse. In addition, their motion was not accepted.

Not all county and state parties post their rules online, but of those that do, Virginia, Oregon and Washington Democratic parties all have a two-thirds requirement delegates must meet in order to replace rules proposed to the convention by party leaders.

In O‘ahu County, Hawaii, the only use made of a two-thirds threshold is when someone tries to bring a matter to the convention floor without first taking it to committee.

Supermajorities are used sparingly in most places.

Most state and county parties we surveyed made no use of voice votes. In fact, they were not even mentioned in some state rules, such as Utah. Washington actually prohibits voice votes. In Oregon, “If there is only one person nominated for [a party] office, the election may be held by voice vote.”

Voice votes allow the chair to determine who won, and in Nevada the rules do not provide for real votes if delegates call for it.

But other states do allow it in various ways. “A roll call vote shall be taken upon the request of 25 delegates,” is an Oregon rule.

Robert’s Rules are widely accepted. In Virginia, Hawaii, Utah, and DuPage, County, Ill., they are the convention rules. The same is true in several counties in Iowa, the first state to hold a presidential voting event. In various states—including Nevada—they are the secondary set of rules, coming into play when an issue is not addressed in state rules.

The way convention rules can be used to favor factions or candidates was demonstrated in 2012 after Mitt Romney nailed down enough delegates to win the Republican presidential nomination.

When delegates arrived at the convention, they were given a set of rules that included rule 40b, which effectively eliminated U.S. Rep. Ron Paul as a candidate by barring candidates who did not have “a majority of delegates from at least eight states” from even being considered by the convention. Nevada’s Republican delegates, pledged to Romney on the first ballot, withdrew their votes from him in protest and voted for Paul.

An effort to get rid of 40b—and any additional manipulation it would foster of the rules this year—by replacing the Republican National Convention rules with Robert’s Rules failed in April.

Who’s subsidizing whom?

Net meterers may be supporting other customers In April, after the Nevada Public Utilities Commission gave NV Energy a rate increase and a new fee paid by by solar customers, the corporation Dennis Myers inserted into its monthly bills a leaflet titled “Net Metering 2016/ Update and FAQs.”

“Net metering is in most cases a net benefit—for the utility and for non-solar rate-payers.”

Brookings Mountain West “Rooftop solar customers use the electric grid to receive and send energy,” the leaflet told customers.

“This is a different usage pattern than other electric service customers.

These new rates reflect the fact that net metering customers receive unique services and the cost of providing those services is different than providing service to other customers who do not own their own electric generation equipment. Prior to these new rules, customers without rooftop solar were subsidizing those customers with rooftop solar systems.”

This is the argument Warren Buffett’s monopoly NV Energy has used all along, and it prevailed with the Nevada PUC in December, when

commissioners voted unanimously to reduce the payments homeowners receive for generating solar power and sending it back to the grid, the practice known in law as net metering.

The decision came at the request of NV Energy, which argued, “These charges are based on the specific costs that the companies incur to provide electric service to customers who install intermittent, renewable generation.” It also came in spite of a study commissioned by the PUC itself that found net metering was subsidizing other customers.

The Nevada decision attracted wide attention and came in the midst of a national campaign by NV Energy owner Warren Buffett in legislatures and utility commissions to put an end to net metering. Buffett was quoted saying that he was ready to build traditional large-scale power plants “as far as the eye can see.”

On May 23, Brookings Mountain West—the western arm of the Brookings Institution—issued a paper that read in part, “[T]he ferment has prompted a cruder set of backlashes.

Most pointedly, some utilities contend that the ‘net-metering’ fees paid to homeowners with rooftop installations for excess solar power they send back to the grid unfairly transfer costs to the utilities and their non-solar customers.”

The NV Energy claim that regular customers were subsidizing net metering customers was largely successful as public relations, with many news reports citing it as fact, a neat illustration of the pitfalls of pack journalism, because there were significant challenges to that conclusion all along.

With studies of the issue piling up, the Brookings paper last week found: “So what does the accumulating national literature on costs and benefits of net metering say? Increasingly it concludes—whether conducted

by PUCs, national labs, or academics—that the economic benefits of net metering actually outweigh the costs and impose no significant cost increase for non-solar customers. Far from a net cost, net metering is in most cases a net benefit—for the utility and for non-solar rate-payers.”

Mark Muro, one of the authors of the paper, said it was not commissioned by any group or corporation but was done on Brooking’s own initiative.

The paper cites studies by Vermont, Mississippi, Minnesota and Maine—and Nevada, which all find that net metering is carrying its own weight. It references one study, from Louisiana, that does not. In addition to the states studies, the Brookings paper also made use of research by campuses and other think tanks.

Of the Nevada study paid for by the public, Brookings observes, “In 2014 a study commissioned by the Nevada Public Utility Commission itself concluded that net metering provided $36 million in benefits to all NV Energy customers, confirming that solar energy can provide cost savings for both solar and non-solar customers alike. What’s more, solar installations will make fewer costly grid upgrades necessary, leading to additional savings. The study estimated a net benefit of $166 million over the lifetime of solar systems installed through 2016. Furthermore, due to changes to utility incentives and net-metering policies in Nevada starting in 2014, solar customers would not be significantly shifting costs to other ratepayers.”

Contesting studies Does the action by the Nevada PUC in December effectively raise costs to regular customers by removing a subsidy from net metering customers?

Muro: “That’s an interesting question. In theory it does.”

Former Nevada state consumer advocate Timothy Hay: “That’s a little tricky to answer. [NV Energy] will be getting more money from the fixed

fee from net metering customers. …

There are extra dollars in the pool that will have to be accounted for at some point, but it’s just extra money for the company at this point.”

More than 40 states require net metering plans, and most of them mandate that utilities purchase energy generated by homeowners and businesses beyond their own needs.

The Nevada PUC commissioners had two reports on the subsidy issue before the December decision was made—an NV Energy report and a PUC-commissioned report. The PUC decided to accept the findings of the NV Energy report.

As journalists reported the subsidy argument as fact, some groups otherwise hostile to policies that encourage alternative energy seized on the claim and helped spread it. For instance, the Citizens Against Government Waste website reads, “Current net metering polices help rooftop solar customers avoid paying for many of the fixed costs of the electric grid that they rely on for electricity day and night. As a consequence, there is a considerable cost shift to non-solar customers in order to subsidize solar customers for utilizing the grid.”

A soon as the Nevada PUC decision was announced last year, it was subjected to scrutiny from both sides.

A Forbes magazine columnist wrote, “Even the PUC’s staff, which strongly supported NV Energy’s

proposals to revise the NEM rules, recognized ‘that NEM ratepayers do not impose any significant additional costs on NV Energy or other ratepayer classes at this time.’ An independent study of the economics of Nevada’s NEM policies ... concluded that NEM ratepayers actually created a $36 million net benefit for non-NEM ratepayers. In other words, NEM ratepayers with rooftop solar were not free riders and NEM policies did not shift costs from NEM ratepayers to non-NEM ratepayers.”

But a Wall Street Journal colum-

“ Customers without rooftop solar were subsidizing those customers with rooftop solar systems.”

NV Energy nist wrote, “[Net metering] sounds like a great deal—but there’s no free green lunch, and non-solar utility customers must underwrite this hidden subsidy.

Nevada’s utility commission estimates that non-solar ratepayers—who tend to be lower income—subsidize each solar user in southern Nevada to the tune of $623 per year. Most of this flows to solar-leasing company investors such as J.P. Morgan Chase, Goldman Sachs and Citigroup.” Ω

Catching rays Non-profit installs 100th solar project There hasn’t been much good news for solar energy enthusiasts in Nevada in 2016.

Weathering the storm, however, is local non-profit Black Rock Solar, which celebrated the construction of its 100th solar project in May—a 125 by Kelsey kilowatt solar array installed at Stead Elementary School.

Fitzgerald On the morning of May 25, officials from the Washoe County School District, NV Energy, Stead Elementary School and Black Rock Solar gathered near a lively playground at the school for a ribbon-cutting.

There, behind a beige-colored fence, an array of 471 ground-mounted solar panels soaked up the morning sun, generating electricity that is expected to save the school approximately $16,500 per year.

According to school district energy manager Jason Geddes, Stead Elementary School used about 391,000 kilowatt hours (kWh) of electricity in 2015. The new solar panels will provide about 257,000 kWh per year, meeting approximately 66 percent of the school’s electricity needs.

Thirty-six out of 93 schools in the district now use solar power for some portion of their electricity, said Geddes.

This project, funded by NV Energy and constructed by Black Rock Solar, is part of the Lower Income Solar Energy Pilot program created by the Nevada Legislature in 2013 under Assembly Bill 428. Under this program, NV Energy will provide two megawatts of power to low income communities before 2017. The first megawatt will go to low income schools throughout the state, four of which—including Stead Elementary—are located in Northern Nevada. The second will benefit 10 nonprofit organizations.

In December 2015, the Public Utilities Commission of Nevada authorized changes to net metering rates for residential and small commercial solar installations. These changes have caused much disruption within Nevada’s residential rooftop solar industry, but have not impacted Black Rock Solar, whose projects generally fall under the category of “medium commercial,” said BRS executive director Patrick McCully.

This doesn’t mean that all has been smooth sailing for the nonprofit, which provides low-cost or no-cost solar installations for schools, tribes and other non-profit organizations. They used to do this using rebates from NV Energy. “A couple of years ago, the rebates were slashed, so before the net metering change came, we already saw big changes,” McCully said.

As for the future of the solar industry in Nevada? McCully believes that things can only go up from here. “It’ll take some time, but I think things will slowly improve,” he said. “One of the biggest problems they made is that even if political changes are made and we go back to something like the old system, that they’ve made such a dent in confidence in solar in the state that it’ll still take a long time to recover.” Ω

“ I

saw one of the planes hit the building,” said Meredith Tanzer. It was September 11, the day terrorists attacked the World Trade Center. She was in New York on a business trip. She flew home to San Francisco, where she was a marketing director for a dot-com, and found that, suddenly, living in a big city felt a little more dangerous than it had before. The business flights on her calendar suddenly seemed a little more risky. It was one of those moments in life when a hard reboot seemed like the best thing to do. In 2002, she quit her job and moved to Reno. She had a couple of other reasons for a change of pace as well.

“I had been working crazy hours,” she said.

“I didn’t have time to give back. I could send organizations a check, but that’s not the same.”

To Tanzer, a petite 45-year-old with purplestreaked hair, giving back was a big deal. She’d been a volunteer for over a dozen years, and the experience of helping others had opened doors she’d never imagined.

She’d grown up in Marin County, moved to San Francisco “at 19 or so,” with a boyfriend, and found the industriousness of the city’s culture thrilling.

“Every other person you talked to was doing something to impact the world,” she said with the excitement of that discovery still fresh in her voice a quarter century later.

Tanzer dived into city life headfirst. She worked with a film company and a clothing company. She came out as a lesbian and wrote for edgy magazines such as On Our Backs and CUIR Underground. She worked on art shows and volunteered at schools.

“By volunteering you get to meet really cool other people,” she said. “I got to run an event for Comedy Central when I was 23 at The Warfield. I was a lesbian activist. I was a fat activist. People I worked with are tremendous leaders now, that I got to learn from. I learned how to get around really difficult obstacles.”

One obstacle she’s overcome lately has been persevering through a seven-year-long effort to open a new LGBT center in Reno.

In addition to social activities, the board aims to tackle some more challenging issues. One of them is helping LGBT youth who are homeless.

Nina Toney is an outgoing 25-year-old who drops by Our Center frequently.

“I got kicked out when I was 11,” Toney said. She said the news that she was a lesbian had not sat well with her mother. She went to A Rainbow Place, Reno’s previous gay community center, which closed in 2008 due to budget constraints. She said a staff member there housed her for about a year until Toney’s mother asked her to return home.

“Two years later, she kicked me out again,” said Toney. “It was just, like, a vicious fucking cycle. When I was a minor, I was probably kicked out of my house seven times for being gay.”

Eventually, Toney said, another Rainbow Place staffer gained legal custody of her.

She credits those mentors for her “being here today” and for encouraging her to stay in school.

“I was like, all’ y’all people with experience and all y’all who went to college and stuff, I want to drop out of high school,” she said. “Let me go talk to you guys. Because I know that I shouldn’t quit. But I want to. But I know I probably shouldn’t, but I want you to tell me why I shouldn’t.”

Her mentors told her, “You’re better than that.”

Toney graduated from Wooster High School in 2010. Now she has her own apartment and a dog, and she works as a cook. Like many at the center, she found that a difficult youth translated into a desire to help others.

“I’ve become somewhat of a stable adult,” she said. “I can help people. I’m here now. Any time they need help, I’m like, ring-a-dang me.

I’m here. I’ll be there as quick as possible.”

To Tanzer, one of the most important things Our Center can offer its youngest visitors is encouragement from Toney and other adults.

“These kids, I just want them to know that they could do whatever they want,” Tanzer said. “There’s someone there. I’ll cheer you on. I’ll find other people to cheer you on. If I can’t do it, Andy [a volunteer] can yell at you for not going to school. Nina can check in to say, ‘You got an A! That’s fantastic!’ or ‘You went to prom; let me see your pictures,’ and you just feel taken care of, and like you’re part of something.”

“I try to make an appearance two or three times a week,” Toney said.

Our Center, a group that includes activist Jeromy Manke, who is the board’s president, and attorney Todd Eikelberger. They started raising funds and providing services to the LGBT community in 2009. They mentored an LGBT youth group without a home base, meeting in coffee shops and people’s houses.

They kept their supplies in a donated storage space in Sparks.

Last year, the group received a sustaining grant from the Norris-Rocaberte Family Foundation. The Norris-Rocabertes are a family of two dads and six children who’ve backed groups as the Nevada Gay Men’s Chorus and Reno Pops Orchestra. For Build Our Center, the foundation funding was the game changer that allowed the group to rent a permanent space.

The new facility is called Our Center. It opened April 30 in a cheery storefront on Wells Avenue that used to house the Boy Scouts of America office. The opening was preceded by an April 29 celebration, during which Mayor Hillary Schieve performed the ribbon cutting.

A week before the official opening, Our Center was abuzz with excitement as volunteers helped with finishing touches. Two men cranked up some dance music and painted unicorns on a door. A dad and his preschoolaged son made pinwheels for the opening-day festivities. A woman around retirement age went out to pick up cleaning supplies. There’s been a revolving door of helpers and visitors ever since.

“We had 14 people come in today,” Tanzer said a few days after the opening. “One guy came in to check out the library. A couple people are hosting meetings. Some guy came and cleaned graffiti off our building and reorganized a closet.”

The 3,000 square-foot space has a boardroom, a classroom, an art room, a kitchenette, any-gender restrooms, a tiny library, a lounge designated for kids’ and families’ events, a front reception area with racks of Our Center t-shirts for sale and a desk staffed by either Tanzer or one of dozens of volunteers.

Plans for the immediate future include yoga classes, bingo nights and providing meeting space for groups such as Alcoholics Anonymous or PFLAG. (That acronym used to mean “Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays.” Categorizations regarding orientation have evolved to be more inclusive, and the group’s tagline is now “Parents, Families, Friends and Allies United with LGBTQ People to move equality forward” while the official name remains PFLAG.) Also, said Tanzer, Our Center is a venue for anyone who wants to interact with the community in a public place. She’s in the process of getting a feel for what people most need and scheduling events accordingly.

Possibilities include counseling sessions, underage karaoke, building a facility for television and podcast production, or just showing up to meet people.

“It’s largely a hangout for teens, gay, transgender, straight, whatever,” Tanzer said. “The kids want to plan a dance.” She’s planning to make that happen soon.

The bigger picture Toney hasn’t been the only LGBT teen in recent memory in need of stable housing.

Tanzer used to run an arty boutique on First Street called La Bussola, and when A Rainbow Place closed, the shop served as a de facto youth center.

“I’m passionate because of the homeless statistics for the LGBT community, but after having La Bussola and how many kids I dealt with down there that would hang out

at my shop that didn’t have a place to live or didn’t have parents to watch over them, I realized what a huge problem it was,” she said. “The kids would come to me all the time.

They would want me to bring them home.

Sometimes I did bring them home. I’m not allowed to do that anymore though.”

She and Toney listed the places they’ve known teens to spend the night—a friend’s house, an alley, a sofa, under a bridge, an open garage where they walked in and threw something down just for the night, any place dry.

Tanzer said the city needs “an emergency shelter, a group home. There isn’t one. Even a foster care home. That doesn’t exist for LGBT kids. Those kids need a place to talk about things.”

Nationwide, about 30-40 percent of homeless youth are LGBT. In Reno, it’s 23 percent, according to the Homeless Youth Point In Time Count survey, conducted in January by the Nevada Youth Empowerment Project and Build Our Center.

When Tanzer tells stories of the young people she’s worked with, there’s love in her voice and a beaming smile on her face. She said it’s been a challenge to determine exactly what she can and can’t realistically do for the teens who need the most help.

No. “Yell at the mayor and attend HUD meetings” in an effort to secure more services for homeless teens? Definitely.

“We did a little workforce development,” Tanzer said. She set up B with an internship at a salon.

“Just getting out there in the community is what helped me get out of my depression and other disorders,” B said. “Having the support of other people in the group just really helped me. If it wasn’t for Meredith I would not be here. I would not.”

B has become something of a spokesperson for Our Center’s ideas about community members supporting each other. He said that over the last few years he went “from not wanting to be on this planet anymore to performing onstage and doing parades with the mayor and being on the radio.”

A 16-year-old with gauged ears settled onto the angular, black couch in Our Center’s blue and fuchsia children’s room to talk about some of the challenges he’s faced as an LGBT teen. At that moment he looked like a boy. At a recent dance at a senior center and on his YouTube channel he’d worn long hair and makeup and identified as a girl.

“I have gone back and forth in my between gender identity, between identifying as trans and identifying as androgynous,” he said. “I’ve gone by many names. I’ve gone by Brandon.

I’ve gone by Star. Bridgette. Violet. All the names in the book. Meredith just calls me B.” After struggling since age 13 with with depression, identity disorder and a strained relationship with family members, there are a few things B has settled on. He wants to be a cosmetologist. He wants to be in a documentary on transgender people. And he wants to teach a makeup class at Our Center.

B is one of a few dozen teens Tanzer began mentoring during the La Bussola years, through an LGBT youth group called the Homies.

Referring to the teens in her group, some of whom would spend time on the River Walk, Tanzer said, “It drove me crazy; people would refer to them as ‘river rats.’ How are you going to succeed when you have adults in positions of authority calling you names?”

The Homies responded to the name calling by meeting bi-weekly to pursue projects that, as Tanzer put it, “got them appreciated for being

Sea change By many accounts, the opening of Our Center is part of a sea change, and a lot has improved for the LGBT community.

“When I was little, the only gay person I knew was Martina Navratilova, the tennis player,” Tanzer said. “And I didn’t want to be gay because I didn’t like that way she dressed.”

Since then, she said, “Ellen has come out, Bruce Jenner, Queer Eye for the Straight Guy.” She believes having mainstream figures

come out did a lot to improve acceptance of the LGBT community nationally.

And locally, she said, “I can tell you, 14 years ago, when I had my shop, I got hate letters every single day, and churches came to pray over me, and people told me I was going to hell—every week.” Now, she said, “We have 12 affirming churches.” She credits Kathy Baldock who she called, “a straight, evangelical, Christian woman, the Oprah of gay acceptance.” Baldock runs an organization in Reno called Canyonwalker Connections, whose mission is “repairing the breach between the Church and LGBT community.”

Tanzer said she’s changed too, since living in Reno. “People here are passionate, connected and loving,” she said. “That did something for my constitution. I’ve always volunteered. But doing that here, I’ve had people tell me no, but never so much to totally squash me.”

There are still teens who need support and housing, and she plans to keep advocating for them.

“I’m just going to keep talking,” she said, “and eventually you get something done.”

As for Our Center’s next steps, that’s up to the community. Tanzer said, “It’ll be cool to see what develops out of here. The Bowmans are boudoir photographers Story and photo by Jeri Chadwell-Singley | jeric@newsreview.com Tessa Marie’s long legs were reflected in the hardwood floor as she crossed the living room to stand in front of gauzy white curtains drawn over French doors.

The afternoon sunlight filtered through, creating a halo around the dark tumble of her hair where it fell to meet slender shoulders left bare above the gray cardigan she wore with teal panties.

“Now cross your legs at the ankle and turn your head to the side so I can see your profile,” said Kristi Bowman, absently holding her camera in one hand.

As Kristi demonstrated the pose, her husband, John, busied himself with the settings on his own camera. Once Tessa was in position, the pair trained their cameras on her again and began snapping more photos.

This scene is typical of a weekday afternoon in the Bowman residence, which doubles as a studio for their boudoir photography business. But this wasn’t always the case. Before the recession hit, the Bowmans lived in a suburb of Salt Lake City, where they both worked in real estate—John as a land developer and Kristi as a realtor.

“After our fourth baby, I decided to stay home, and we got a really nice camera to take on vacation with us,” Kristi said. “While we were there, we were taking just tons of pictures. Since I was at home with our baby, I thought ‘Maybe I can do this on the side?’”

Kristi began taking family photos and portraits professionally in late 2007. When John got laid off six months later, he started helping her 16 | RN&R |

with accounting and marketing for her business.

“About that same time, we were just doing pictures of kids and families and stuff,” Kristi recalled. “Well, I went and had my [boudoir] pictures done as a gift for him, and I had to fly to California to get it done. And it was just a guy photographer, and there was like no place for me to change. So that part was really awkward, but I came away from it feeling so good about myself. I just felt confident.

It gave me confidence. And I wanted every woman to feel that way … and especially in Utah—I just felt like women really needed it there.”

According to the Bowmans, boudoir photography is big business in Utah.

Among the Mormon community, members often have boudoir shoots done as a part of the church’s tenets on nurturing the marital relationship. When the Bowmans decided to leave Utah in 2009, they did so for their family, not their business.

“We were both born and raised in Utah, and I didn’t grow up in the church,” Kristi explained. “I was kind of like always an outsider because of that, and our kids were getting a little older, and I didn’t want them to experience the same kind of outcast treatment that I got, and Reno was far enough away that we got a completely different environment, yet close enough that we could still go and see family but be out of Utah.”

“There, if you buy a bottle of wine, you hide it,” John said. “Here, people carry it around like it’s a baby. … It’s just the complete opposite culture.”

One thing leads to another According the Bowmans, the culture of Reno works well with their business.

They’re busy, with an average of about 10 photo shoots per week. The entire downstairs area of their large home in northwest Reno has been converted into a studio space. Tall shelves stuffed with plush blankets line the walls. A room off the kitchen serves as a changing area and storage space for props, backdrops and camera equipment.

The business is expanding in scope as well. Mixed in with the sexy trappings for boudoir shoots are props for newborn and first birthday photography, which now accounts for nearly a third of the Bowmans’ business. Hooks loaded with baby headbands and other hair accessories hang from the breakfast bar between the kitchen and living room. And John has built new props for newborn shoots, including large bird nests with soft, fleece linings and a dreamcatcher that cradles babies (a bit like a hammock).

“I think people are like, ‘That’s kind of weird—newborns and naked ladies,’” Kristi said. “You know what I mean, like it’s so weird. But one seriously leads to the other. So many times, they come back like a year later and they’re pregnant.”

But it’s not just women of childbearing age who come in for boudoir shoots. The Bowmans see plenty of older women too.

(Their oldest client so far was 74.) Men, on the other hand, are rare customers at any age. According to Kristi, while only a handful have come in for sessions, there

was a time when she used to receive a lot of calls from men.

“They were always creeps, because they’d be like, ‘Um, I really want to take naked pictures of me outside by a public swimming pool’ or, ‘I need some dick pics for my dating site. Can you do those for me?’ Just idiots,” she said.

Another change to the business came about a year and a half ago when John started taking photos alongside Kristi during boudoir shoots.

“We have such a different style of shooting that it’s almost like having two completely—well, it is—two different photographers with totally different styles,” Kristi said. “So our clients get both, and it’s really cool.”

Are the clients comfortable posing in their skivvies with John present?

According to the Bowmans, for the most part, they are.

“We wouldn’t have this quality of photo if it was just one person,” John said.

“You can’t do it, and so I think the energy is just—I’m just here and I’m busy and I’m doing my job. So, I’m not looking at you. I’m not just sitting around, and so even the ones who are nervous with me, they get completely not nervous. Some that are really kind of offended that I’m here, they just love me in the end.”

Bonded by nature Emily and Marcy Felch When Emily Felch was in seventh grade, she got hooked on a biography of by Theodore Roosevelt—not so much Bryan Akerley the president’s achievements in office, but the fact that he practiced taxidermy as a child.

Not long after, she plucked a dead marmot from the road on her way home from babysitting, took it home and skinned it herself.

Marcy and her husband believe in the reward of risk-taking. They instilled it in Emily and their two younger children, who she said constantly ask her when they’ll get a shot at starting a business.

“I wanted to make sure to encourage my kids to follow what they were passionate about, not what I thought they should do,” said Marcy.

When Marcy was in middle school, a science project involved creating a bug collection.

“I had the benefit of my mom being a really good sewer, so she made a net for me,” she said.

She soon learned how to pin insects.

Along with her daughter’s interest, the store was an opportunity to get back into these hobbies.

She encouraged her daughter to continue to pursue taxidermy.

Emily wanted an apprenticeship, but finding one was difficult. She said the male-dominated profession was quick to push her away; the taxidermists she called didn’t want a young woman working with them.

But Emily stuck with it, eventually finding a knowledgeable mentor, and she continued to learn.

“Just do it,” she said, passing the message to anyone—boy or girl—interested in taxidermy.

And, as her mother added, it helps to have a parent “who keeps a freezer full of roadkill for you.”

As business partners, Emily and Marcy are constantly teaching each other new things. Emily has big plans for the future of the store.

“I would love to turn this into a natural history museum. I’ve always wished we had a really solid natural history museum here,” she said.

In the meantime, she and her mom are enjoying their time together.

“I wouldn’t have done it without Emily,” said Marcy. In the middle of this room, packed to the brim with everything she loves with a passion, Emily smiled.

“I wouldn’t have done it without you either.” Ω

A few years and an overflowing closetful of animal carcasses later, Felch, now 20, got a call from her mother, Marcy Felch, who had driven by an empty storefront in the heart of Midtown and pictured the perfect space for her daughter’s—and her own—hobbies.

The Felches described Natural Selection—the store they now co-own on St. Lawrence Avenue— as a “natural history museum you can touch and buy.” Green succulents line one wall, and various animal claws and skulls are stacked against the opposite wall.

Large mounts and horns adorn all sides of the shop.

“Our biggest thing is we want to cultivate an appreciation for the natural world,” said Emily.

“So people aren’t afraid of nature,” said Marcy. The two have a habit of finishing each other’s sentences.

Emily had been attending the University of Nevada, Reno, but didn’t feel passion for school the way she did for her DIY animal projects. Once her mom got the idea to open a store in that empty Midtown space, the choice didn’t take long.

“We decided in two days,” Marcy said.

The pork on the La Michoacana carnitas nachos was tasty, but the dish was lukewarm.

The menu includes all the usual suspects, with large screens displaying photos of available dishes. Our order arrived from the kitchen really fast. So fast, I wondered if any actual cooking had occurred in that time span.

It isn’t uncommon for Mexican food to be prepared in advance, then assembled and placed in a broiler to melt the cheese and heat everything—including the plate—to piping hot perfection. But based on our experience, it’s more likely that a microwave oven was involved.

Our shared plate of carnitas nachos ($5.95) featured round— clearly store-bought—tortilla chips covered with an ample supply of tasty pork, sour cream, pico de gallo, and room-temperature nacho cheese that must have been poured straight from a can. The flavors were actually quite good. We ate the whole thing, but I can’t recall ever being served cold nachos.

It was essentially a dressed-up version of 7-11 chips and cheese, sans the heat of a convenience store cheese dispenser.

Despite my best instincts, I ordered chiles rellenos ($6.99) with sauce on the side to see if the poblano peppers were fried crispy before being soaked. The result was just as mushy as most I’ve seen in town, further confirming my suspicion that the chiles are being fried and refrigerated in advance, then microwaved and dunked in sauce to hide the crime. It was extra disappointing in this instance, considering the sauce was not your average mess of tomato puree. It was smooth, spicy, full of onion and good enough to make me enjoy the dish despite the lack of fresh-fried texture.

The chicken in my wife’s enchiladas ($6.99) was very dry. The fact that the topping of shredded cheese went from melty on the plate’s outside edge, to completely unmelted in the center, only furthered my suspicions on the use of high-frequency radio waves as a heat source. On both dinner plates, the rice and beans were par for the course.

Keeping the urgent care number on speed dial, I went ahead and tried a room-temp ceviche tostada ($2.49). Despite my concerns, the fish appeared to be reasonably fresh and was combined with a great mix of veg and plenty of cilantro—actually quite good. Sadly, the cabeza sope ($1.99) I ordered was so gnarly I couldn’t finish it. Piled high with lettuce, cheese and meat, it looked promising on the plate. But the thick-fried masa was very difficult to bite through, possessing mostly the flavor of old, burned oil.

Similarly, an order of tacos al pastor ($1.25 each) tasted overcooked and a tad burned, with tiny pebbles of meat that—while still edible—didn’t have a hint of spice or pineapple.

Perhaps the most successful dish was caldo camaron ($9.49), a soup of shrimp and vegetables.

The shrimp wasn’t overcooked, and the broth was spicy without being overkill. Oddly, the veggies were cut in very large pieces, with carrots and squash the length of my fingers, and several whole red potatoes. Odd, but not a deal breaker. The soup wasn’t served as hot as I’d like, but it was the warmest dish we were served. Ω

X misses the spot X-Men: Apocalypse After scoring a huge critical and box office success with X-Men: Days of Future Past, Bryan Singer’s triumphant return to the franchise, 20th Century Fox wisely brought the director back for X-Men: Apocalypse.

However, in a move that induces head scratching, Fox cut the budget for the current installment, while padding the cast and by upping the action quotient. Actually, this is Bob Grimm the studio that screwed up Fantastic Four, so maybe the shortchanging of a reliable bg r i mm@ franchise isn’t all that surprising. newsr evie w.c om There are portions of the movie that are sloppier than the usual Singer offerings, and quite a few moments have cut-rate CGI. The movie alternates between looking great to looking super bad.

The flaws eventually pile up, and while there are some nice, enjoyable stretches, it’s a bit of a mess in the end—despite powerful work from Michael Fassbender as Magneto and new-to-the-franchise Oscar Isaac as the menacing villain Apocalypse.

Before the opening credits, which look like shit, we get a quick backstory for Apocalypse. En Sabah Nur (Isaac), an ancient Egyptian, merges with some sort of ancient mystical being, thus becoming the world’s first mutant, or something like that.

He’s then buried under a crushed pyramid for centuries. Cue cheapie opening credits.

Cut to the 1980s, a decade after the events of Future Past. A bunch of random people stand around in the pyramid ruins chanting, and En Sabah Nur awakens as Apocalypse, a blue monster that looks like a cross between Jeff Bridges in Tron and the Emperor from Star Wars. Even though he’s buried under a bunch of makeup and voice modulation, Isaac makes his every moment on screen count. He looks like he’s having a lot of fun.

The same goes for Fassbender, whose Erik Lehnsherr has been masquerading as a mild-mannered factory worker in Poland since the events in Washington, D.C., happily married with a daughter. Erik is loving life, but when Apocalypse awakens, he causes an earthquake that jars something loose at the factory. Erik stops an object from falling on a friend, thus blowing his cover, and starting a succession of events that make Erik ripe for another run at being the evil Magneto.

Apocalypse builds an army of four, like the four horsemen, including Magneto, Storm (Alexandra Shipp), Angel (Ben Hardy) and Psylocke (Olivia Munn). They jet all over the Earth in some sort of energy bubble like Bill and Ted in their phone booth, eventually winding up at Charles Xavier’s (James McAvoy) school. Xavier has a power Apocalypse craves, and this leads to all sorts of wam-bam chaotic showdowns involving crumbling buildings and telekinetic battles.

With all of this going one, Singer tries to make time for a back story involving Cyclops (Tye Sheridan) and Jean Grey (Sophie Turner) while upping the screen time for Beast (Nicholas Hoult) and Quicksilver (Evan Peters). And, oh yeah, there’s an upstart actress that goes by the name of Jennifer Lawrence in there too, doing her Mystique shtick.

There’s another memorable sequence involving Quicksilver—this time set to a Eurythmics song—and the guy with knives shooting out of his knuckles makes a big, if somewhat forced and unnecessary, cameo. Singer tries to do too much, and the movie wears out its welcome with its 144 minute running time.

The weakest of the new cast members is Turner as Jean Grey. The Game of Thrones actress is simply outmatched by the talent around her, and fails to make Jean Grey compelling. She’s just kind of pouty and grouchy.

Lawrence is fine as Mystique, but her storyline feels a bit tacked on.

Had the movie spent a little more time on Magneto and cut back on some of the characters, X-Men: Apocalypse could’ve been another worthy entry in the franchise thanks to Isaac. It’s ultimately a near miss, and the worst movie in a franchise that hadn’t delivered a bad film yet.

(Yes, I was OK with the third one.)

Whatever happens next, it might be time for Singer to take an X-Men sabbatical. Ω

Captain America: Civil War

This is a nice blast of superhero fun that finds a diplomatic way to include many Marvel favorites, even introducing a few characters to the modern Marvel Cinematic Universe, without feeling crowded or rushed.

Front and center, there’s Steve Rogers (former Human Torch Chris Evans), a.k.a. Captain America, still having bro issues when it comes to the Winter Soldier, Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan). Cap wants to back up his former best friend, but the guy committed some pretty shady acts while brainwashed, some of them very hard to defend. Captain America has to make some hard choices. Meanwhile, Secretary of State Thaddeus Ross (William Hurt) thought Age of Ultron sucked for more than the obvious reasons. On top of being kind of boring, it left death and destruction in its wake, as did the far more exciting original The Avengers. World leaders want to put the Avengers in check, using them as a sort of alternative to nuclear weapons. Tony Stark, a.k.a. Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr., still owning it) suffering a crisis of conscience, agrees to the proposed accord.

Rogers thinks it’s bullshit and won’t sign. This works as a fine setup for an eventual battle between Iron Man and Captain America, where both sides have compelling reasons to fight.

The Do-Over

The second film in the Adam Sandler Netflix era after the horrible The Ridiculous 6 is still pretty bad moviemaking, but it’s a step in the right direction. Director Steven Brill made two of the better Sandler vehicles, Little Nicky and Mr. Deeds, and their third pairing has its moments. That’s thanks in large part to the pairing of Sandler and an effective David Spade, who is cast against type as Charlie, a nerd looking for new start on life. Sandler plays Max, who shows up at their high school reunion, takes pity on Charlie, and fakes both of their deaths so that they can smoke joints and drink for the rest of their lives. The plot isn’t that simple, and the two wind up being pursued by a killer in a fairly funny homage to Die Hard.

The film is put together better than most of the later Sandler comedies, and it packs quite a few good laughs. Unfortunately, it also veers into overkill way too many times, and the gross stuff feels discordant and just wrong. Still, I liked the characters, and the film classes up a bit at the halfway mark when Paula Patton enters the picture. She has a fight with Kathryn Hahn that’s one of the better smackdowns in a movie this summer. The movie doesn’t work as a whole, but it does show that Sandler and Spade are a good screen duo when in the hands of a semi-capable director. Also, it has Natasha Leggero in it, and that’s always a good thing.

Had everybody just held the phone on a few of the extreme sight gags, and perhaps edited a solid 15 minutes off the movie, I might’ve been able to recommend the film. (Available for streaming on Netflix as part of Sandler’s straight-to-Netflix movie series.)

The Huntsman: Winter’s War

When Kristen Stewart made out with the director of Snow White and the Huntsman, plans for a sequel starring her were scrapped, and a whole new plan featuring her costar and budding movie giant Chris Hemsworth (Thor!) were hatched. What producers didn’t realize at the time is that Hemsworth basically sucks whenever he’s doing anything other than playing Thor. Blackhat, In the Heart of the Sea, Vacation, and now this mighty slice of hell are proof of that. While Snow White was no creative party, it was a tolerable misfire.

This is a star-studded absolute mess. It’s a worthless slog of a sequel/prequel. Charlize Theron returns as the evil Ravenna, with Emily Blunt and Jessica Chastain joining the sad party. And, of course, you have Thor on hand as the Huntsman, the most useless, banal role this guy has taken on in his mostly useless and banal career.

The Jungle Book

Jon Favreau’s delightful and funny take on the Rudyard Kipling’s tale of a boy raised by wolves is a winner. A young boy raised in the jungle is pursued by a pissed-off tiger (Idris Elba) who had his face burned by a human when he was young. When plans to leave for a human village are rudely interrupted, Mowgli (newcomer Neel Sethi) winds up staying in the jungle longer than he planned, and he must keep wearing the same pair of red baggy shorts. He encounters Kaa (Scarlett Johansson), an evil temptress snake, and other perils while building

a special friendship with a big bear. And, as far as I could see, he never stops to wash those red shorts. A swim in the river doesn’t count.

You need detergent. Bill Murray is, indeed, a masterstroke of vocal casting as Baloo, the big bear who befriends Mowgli on his extended jungle trek. Casting Christopher Walken as King Louie, the Kong-sized master of all apes in the jungle, actually tops the Murray casting feat. It gives Favreau’s film an opportunity to become truly weird, very funny, and even a little scary.

The highlight comes when Walken’s King Louie, portrayed with undertones of Brando’s Colonel Kurtz, suddenly busts out “I Wanna Be Like You.” Walken is perfect for the song and perfect for the character, making the scene an instant classic. The special effects are topnotch.

The Meddler

Susan Sarandon gets the fun vehicle she deserves with this fine directorial effort from Lorene Scafaria (Seeking a Friend at the End of the World), who also wrote the clever and sweet screenplay. Sarandon plays Marnie, a New Jersey widow who has moved to L.A. to be near her daughter, Lorie (Rose Byrne), a screenwriter dealing with the breakup of her latest relationship. Marnie has a bunch of money and a lot of time on her hands, so she calls her daughter constantly, brings her bagels, and basically drives her crazy. When Lorie heads back east to shoot a pilot, Marnie winds up befriending Lorie’s friends and making a few new ones, including Zipper (J.K. Simmons) and his chickens. Byrne disappears for a good chunk of the movie, but when she’s around, she and Sarandon have convincing motherdaughter chemistry. Simmons, normally the purveyor of brash, harsh and funny characters gets to show off his soft side, and Zipper is a real winner. It’s a cute movie that isn’t too cute, and a must for Sarandon fans. Cecily Strong, Lucy Punch and Michael McKean have small but memorable roles among the strong supporting cast.

Miles Ahead

Don Cheadle makes an impressive directorial debut with this crazy biopic that’s mostly fiction but all fun. Cheadle plays jazz trumpeter Miles Davis, hibernating from public life in the late ’70s when a Rolling Stone reporter (Ewan McGregor) shows up at his door looking for a comeback story. The film then turns part comedy thriller as Davis tries to track down a missing tape from his latest sessions, something that never really happened. It’s all just an excuse to use Miles Davis in a goofy story, and somehow it all works. Cheadle is awesome as Davis, even doing some impressive trumpet miming to boot. The film switches between Miles in the ’70s and Miles in the ’60s dealing with relationship struggles. No, the movie doesn’t really focus much on the actual music. It’s more of a weird trip inspired by the music. Michael Stuhlbarg is good as a shady record producer, and McGregor has a lot of fun as the shifty reporter who will do anything for a scoop. It’s not going to win any awards for accuracy, but it’s a fun movie, well worth any music lover’s time.

The Nice Guys

Shane Black, director of the classic Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and the very good Iron Man 3, returns to film noir with The Nice Guys, a grimy detective story starring Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe. The movie is good.

Just good. It’s often so good, it’s painful to witness the moments that don’t work. Crowe plays Jackson Healy, an L.A. loser who takes punching requests from people. Folks pay him to rough up child molesters, for the most part.

He gets an assignment from Amelia (Margaret Qualley), who wants him to pay a visit to private detective Holland March (Gosling), a visit that turns out to be hilariously infused with comic violence. Holland and Jackson wind up working on a case together, one that involves Amelia, a dead porn star, and a gun for hire named John Boy (Matt Bomer, relishing the chance to be super nasty). When Gosling and Crowe are allowed to go off, the movie purrs on all cylinders. It’s when Black’s script (co-written with Anthony Bagarozzi) leads to a conspiracy involving Amelia’s mother, played

by Kim Basinger, that it stalls out. That’s mainly because Basinger is tone-deaf in this film. She doesn’t seem to know what kind of movie she is in, and her line delivery is woefully over-thetop. In short, she’s blazingly terrible in her every scene. The film gets by thanks to the pairing of Gosling and Crowe, who work very well together. They’re like a modern day Abbott & Costello.

Sound and vision Empty Beds A single image can contain several different meanings. Depending on the observer, or the situation, a gun by Kent Irwin could represent danger or safety. A swastika could be a symbol of hate, or a sign of good fortune and wellbeing. A flag could mean freedom to those who pledge it allegiance, or oppression to those who have felt its nation’s fire.

Thematic leaps are accompanied by jarring shifts in tempo, venturing from heavy, sludgy rhythms, to frantic punk beats, and then to progressive rock and jazz explorations, often within a single song. Lyrics are delivered in paragraphs, shouted aloud in an indignant roar, like a protester projecting his voice to read a piece of prose above the rabble.

Empty Beds evolved from a progressive metal outfit, and its musicians make use of that influence. But there’s also a distinctly emo flavor to the music. If that combination of genres conjures the image of someone whose dyed black hair covers one eye, nose pierced and ears gauged, with skin tight pants, Empty Beds will surely disappoint. A preferred genre tag used

by Maxwell is ‘progressive punk,’ a style that blends the simplicity and fury of punk with the intricate virtuosity of progressive music.

Another clue into the origin of Empty Beds’ unique sound is Maxwell’s background in orchestra.

As a violinist, he says he approaches the drums from the standpoint of a violin in an orchestra.

“I don’t go to an instrument to do the instrument itself—I’m thinking more of how to follow and build with everything else,” said Maxwell.

“In orchestra, certain parts come through, others fall back more. I apply a lot of that to drums.”

Following the recent release of their first full-length album, Exist Again, the trio is hard at work on a conceptual release titled Sundowner.

The project tells the story of the political and personal struggles on an alternate Earth. In the album’s reality, an exodus from the planet took place a century ago, when a group of pessimistic astronauts deemed the world doomed, and took their bets on outer space. Society at large demonized the emigrants for abandoning the planet, thus discouraging any copycats. It’s a story that tackles oppression, environmental collapse and war, weaving in personal stories as the plot develops.

It’s a fictional world, but the band hopes the message will be relevant to the current and future geopolitical landscape.

“For us to become super advanced, there would have to be no war at all,” said Nelson. “War always regresses our society.” Ω

Progressive punks?

Shawn Palomares, Levi Nelson and Michael Maxwell are Empty Beds.

Empty Beds is a name that evokes multiple interpretations. It began as a relatively meaningless phrase, a reference to an image used by an earlier incarnation of the band. To drummer/vocalist Michael Maxwell, it struck him as emotionally resonant.

“I thought, that sounds pretty sad.

Let’s roll with it,” said Maxwell.

“We’ll come up with a meaning later.”

Maxwell’s current association with the name is the feeling of anxiety he feels when lying in a bed, thinking. The phrase reminds him of losing sleep, due to his incessant thoughts, and a fear of being powerless to manifest them.

To guitarist/vocalist Levi Nelson, the band name carries political connotations.

“In prisons, especially corporateowned prisons, they charge our government for having empty beds,” said Nelson. “We pay more taxes if there’s less people in prison.”

The Rorschach test of the name is equally applicable to the themes explored through the band’s lyrics.

Many Empty Beds songs reach to deeply personal, private places in the band members’ innermost thoughts and feelings. Other songs are about the nature of power; who has it, who misuses it, and who it should belong to.

You’ll probably think I’m messing with you, but I swear I’m not. I am a man who has no desire to have sex. I was married, but after my wife got pregnant with our second (planned) child, we never had sex again. I just had—and have—no desire to do anything sexually with another person. I have now been divorced for 11 years and celibate for almost 21. Since my divorce, I have never hooked up or even gone on a date. I don’t want to.

Sometimes I have an urge to masturbate, but I have no desire to involve anybody else. I simply don’t get why there is all this kerfuffle about sex. I see no reason to ever have sex again.

Though you refer to yourself as celibate, celibacy is a behavior a person chooses—a decision to fight off the urges most people have to hop on another person and do the humpus rumpus. What you have is a feeling—a longing for sex on a par with the enthusiasm of a guest at a trendy cocktail party being offered a slightly squirming sushi appetizer: “Uh, thanks, but don’t mind if I don’t.”

Assuming you’ve been checked out by a doctor for any possible medical issues, chances are you’re “ace”— as people who are asexual like to call themselves.

Asexuality is a sexual orientation—that of a person who, as social psychologist Anthony Bogaert puts it, has “a lack of sexual attraction or desire for others.”

Asexuality is pretty uncommon. According to a survey that Bogaert did in the U.K., maybe 1 percent of the population has an asexual orientation. This estimate may be on the low side, as it was done in 2004, long before the varieties of sexuality and gender began rivaling the choices in the salad bar at Souplantation.

Asexuality plays out in varied ways. Some asexuals lack any interest in sex, finding it about as appealing as having another person stick a finger up their nose repeatedly (while panting, moaning and shrieking in ecstasy). Others sometimes have urges for sexual release—they just have no desire to expand their dating pool beyond their hand. So, while sexual attraction involves noticing another person and wanting to do all sorts of sex things with them, asexuals might find a person aesthetically pleasing but are generally as sexually interested in them as most of us would be in an adding machine or a potato.

There are those who contend that asexuality is a physical or psychological disorder. And sure, some people probably use asexuality as a cover for

unresolved issues or for shock value—like my (decidedly straight) sister did in coming home from college freshman year and announcing to my conservative Republican mother, “I think I’m a lesbian.” My mother handled this perfectly: “That’s nice. Please put out the plates for dinner.”

Clinical psychologist Lori Brotto explains that asexuality doesn’t meet the psychiatric bible’s criteria for an arousal disorder—physiological impairment or distress at the lack of attraction to others. Research by Brotto and others also finds that asexuals, in general, don’t seem any crazier than the rest of us and have normal hormone levels and normal arousability, reflected in erectile function and vaginal lubrication. As one asexual put it: “I did, you know, test the equipment … and everything works fine, pleasurable and all. It’s just not actually attracted to anything.’’

Some asexuals get into relationships with other people because they want a partner and/or a family.

(They’re asexual, not aloving.) The problem comes if they don’t disclose that their sexual orientation is “Do you mind if I read while you do that?”

As for your situation, if you don’t feel there’s anything missing from your life, well, yay for you.

But consider the “self-expansion” model for romantic relationships by psychologist Arthur Aron and his colleagues. It confirms what many of us intuitively understand: In addition to the ways a relationship challenges people emotionally, it expands who they are as individuals through exposure to their partner’s ideas, identity, possessions and social circle.

You might be able to have that sort of partnership—with a girlfriend who likes the same hot stuff you probably do in bed (microwaved Chinese food). You can connect with like-minded individuals on the big forum for asexuals—AVEN, the Asexuality Visibility and Education Network (asexuality.org). You might make some friends and who knows … you might even meet the woman of your dreams—one who can’t wait to go home with you for a long night of meaningless Scrabble. Ω

The wool truth

That’s the first time I’ve heard the expression “farm to fiber.” It seems like I should’ve heard that five years ago.

Sara Lillegard is the gallery coordinator for Sierra Nevada College’s art galleries. Previously, she was the arts director at the Holland Project in Reno.

She’s also an artist. Research for her art led her to recently attend the sheep shearing school at the University of California Research and Extension Center in Hopland.

Tell me about the artwork you’ve been doing the last few years and how it led to this sheep thing.

Over the last at least four years, it’s been transitioning to more fiber-based work—so there’s been a lot of embroidery and other quilting techniques. How it relates to what I’m doing—an overarching theme is exploring how people create a sense of belonging, particularly within the narrative of the American West, so different ways that we identify ourselves within groups, so that’s led me down this obsession with jackets, because the backs of jackets have been an ongoing cultural identity point—whether that’s bowling teams or motorcycle gangs. ... The jackets are an easy reference point, but they’re also clothing so there’s a history of fashion and materiality. ... It’s a protective garment, which you can take on a metaphorical level, with the sort of clan identity. So, through that, I’ve been doing lots of different jacket projects. Doing different motifs and images and playing with the jacket as a sculptural object. ... How that led to sheep shearing is just an interest in fiber materiality and the history of making fiber.

This is the only way that wool gets off of a sheep. And, for the most part, most breeds have to be sheared because we’ve bred them to the point where they’re producing more wool, and we have to shear them.

So you’re using all your body to hold the sheep and keep it in a position where it feels secure and using this machine—which, in my case, I had never used before—to navigate its anatomy to get the wool off in a proper sequence. The sheep we were working with were Targhee ewes. ... They’re big ewes and heavy. So you’re maneuvering them around, and this isn’t something that they’re delighted to be a part of. So you’re trying to move them through the process, and keep them from kicking you. You’re trying to get access to their body, you’re trying not to cut them, and you’re trying to move them around in ways where they feel secure, like they’re not slipping out or trying to escape.

So all your muscles or tightened up as your bending over and working through this animal, and your constantly rotating. They talk a lot about it being a dance. You’re going through this sequence with this animal, this very unwilling dance partner, and trying to give it a proper haircut. Ω

Symposium in Point Reyes, California, and it was just a day-long symposium, and I left there overwhelmed by the audience and the conversations that were happening because the audience was made up of a combination of rangeland managers, ranchers, particularly sheep ranchers, artisans, fiber artists, people who do natural dyes, and they were all in the same room sharing conversations about soil restoration and how to rotate pastureland and quality of wool, and what sort of sheep you should be raising based on the region you’re living in, how to manage predators, particularly coyotes. ... There were also scientists talking about pollinators. So it was a very interdisciplinary discussion that was happening, and I saw that being a room that was fusing agriculture and artisanship in a way that I hadn’t seen before. ... It’s really importat that we make a farm to fiber connection just as much as we’re making a farm to fork connections now. This is where clothing can come from. This is where it used to come from. Now it’s being outsourced and there are environmental impacts.

Prediction in, prediction out Well, back in March I made the bold prediction that Trump was gonna drop out of the race by Memorial Day. OK, so that didn’t happen.

My impeccable and unimpeachable sources appear to be totally peccable and peachable. Next time I need to make a bold prediction, I’m going old school—back to the Ouija board! (Does anybody under 50 know WTF a Ouija board is?)

But I do know this much. The reality of El Donaldo, presidential candidate, would not have been possible in 2000 or 2008. But now, in 2016, it’s happened, and this is because it’s taken Fux News 15-20 years to fully radicalize that segment of America that would rather not bother with any kind of critical thinking whatsoever. I think that’s exactly the right word for it, too.

Radicalized.

It’s not just a word for moderate Muslims who get re-programmed and then become suicide bombers.

It’s now applicable to Republicans who were halfway civilized in the ’90s and have now been pushed
