We take a lot of pride in facilitating this contest. I always smile when I walk into a restaurant or business I’ve never visited before and see an “RN&R Best of Northern Nevada” plaque up on the wall.

The Best Of issue is always one of our most popular issues every year, and it’s an important chance to hear from y’all on what you think are the best places, things and, most importantly, people in our community. Other local media outlets have tried to launch contests like this, but they’ve all faded or folded after a few years. We remain the definitive source for the Best of Northern Nevada.

I think part of what we do right is that our contest is all write-in. You, dear readers, pick your favorites. You don’t select from a handful of nominees already whittled down by some snobby editor or, worse yet, an ad seller.

You tell us what you think, what you like. The website does have an auto-complete function, based on winners from previous years, to help make things easier, but write in whatever you like.

Only one ballot per email address, and you have to vote in at least 10 categories.

(There are hundreds to choose from.) If you own a business or something, campaigning on social media is encouraged, but don’t try to stuff our ballot boxes. We will catch you.

Re “Other people’s money” (letters, May 12): Regarding the letter about the California lottery, does anyone have any hard numbers on how much money is being spent by Nevadans on lottery tickets in California? Many times when the lottery approaches record numbers people point to the long lines at California lottery stations at the Nevada/California border and say all that money could be helping Nevada schools instead of California schools. Nevada casinos say having a Nevada lottery would decrease revenue and cost casino jobs. I can’t find any studies on how much money is being spent by Nevada on California lotteries. Are you able to to find one? This way we can have numbers to back up the claim instead of looking at the long lines on one side and this will hurt the bottom line on the other side of the argument.

Locker talk So what’s the difference between the federal government and a pimp?

Actually, not much. They both sweet talk you into giving them control over what you do, then they take your earnings. Finally, if you don’t do what they say, they won’t give you your money back. And they make your life miserable.

Iran agreement Although many of us do not like Trump, perhaps we should nevertheless grit our teeth and vote for him in this election. If it’s a choice between a Trump presidency and an Iranian nuclear strike, the lesser of the two evils is a Trump presidency. If I am correct, the current agreement allows Iran to hide nuclear weapons at unknown but suspected sites. It also gives Iran 24 days’ notice in which to move weapons to a site not being inspected. At first Trump wasn’t going to re-negotiate this agreement, but more recently he has indicated that he would. I don’t believe Clinton or Sanders have said they would. If we elect Trump this time around, and stabilize the situation with Iran, then we can feel free to vote for someone more eNevadaironmentalist and/or presidential in 2020.

The Trump rape claim It is often a mystery why some news stories become major stories and others stay below the radar. For weeks there has been a low-grade story about Donald Trump floating around, and the national political press corps has been avoiding dealing with it.

In the 1993 book Lost Tycoon, Ivana Trump was quoted—based on a sworn affidavit—saying that her former husband Donald Trump raped her during their marriage. According to Talking Points Memo, the affidavit says “Trump flew into a rage, attacked her, held her down and began pulling hair out of her head to mimic his pain and then forcibly penetrated her.”

In the years since, relations between the two have improved and Donald Trump has elicited statements from her to ameliorate the rape charge. But she has never recanted it. Yet few journalists have raised the issue with the candidate.

Trump seems—even now, as a candidate—amazingly preoccupied with sex in general and rape in particular, which would seem to call for some scrutiny from journalism, but that has not happened except when he makes sensational statements that are impossible to ignore. It’s hard to believe in this day and age, but some media entities may be uncomfortable with the topic.

In 1992, after boxer Mike Tyson was convicted of raping Desiree Washington, Trump came up with the idea that Tyson—instead of going to jail—should pay a fine and then Trump would manage his fight career. The billionaire made a disagreeable appearance on the Letterman show, seeming to suggest that Washington had invited the rape by dancing in a hallway outside Tyson’s hotel room.

people, they’re not sending their best. ... They’re sending people that have lots of problems, and they’re bringing those problems with us [sic]. They’re bringing drugs.

They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists.”

When Trump cited a Fusion article for his source on the rape claim, a reporter pointed out that the piece dealt with women and not with immigration. Trump replied, “Well, somebody’s doing the raping, Don. I mean somebody’s doing it. Who’s doing the raping?”

Trump even freaked out when Marco Rubio said of him, “And you know what they say about men with small hands.”

Last weekend, Trump called Bill Clinton a rapist and later produced Juanita Broderick, one of Clinton’s accusers from the 1990s.

When one reporter raised the issue of Ivana Trump’s accusation, Trump spokesperson Michael Cohen said, “You’re talking about the front-runner for the GOP, presidential candidate, as well as a private individual who never raped anybody. And, of course, understand that by the very definition, you can’t rape your spouse. … It is true. You cannot rape your spouse. And there’s very clear case law.”

It is not true. Nearly every state addresses spousal rape.

Nevada Revised Statute 200.373, for instance, reads, “It is no defense to a charge of sexual assault that the perpetrator was, at the time of the assault, married to the victim, if the assault was committed by force or by the threat of force.”

Given Trump’s history of verbally describing women as “disgusting animals,” “fat pigs,” and other such terms, and given further reports that he has sexually harassed women, journalists need to report this story like any other. The affidavit, if it exists, should be brought to light.

Journalism needs to do its job. Ω |

Dueling conventions While Democrats were tossing chairs and hurling insults at party officials at their convention in Las Vegas, Republicans in Reno were busily, although more civilly, approving the dismantling of key parts of federal and state government.

More than 1,000 Republican by delegates approved their party Sheila Leslie platform without any discussion of the various planks, which featured radical measures such as abolishing the Internal Revenue Service and defunding the Affordable Care Act, along with meaningless gestures like declaring English as the official language of the country. They also decided to eliminate the minimum wage and prevailing wage laws, privatize student loans and oppose Common Core curricula, support Yucca Mountain as the nation’s nuclear waste dump, and implement voter-identification laws. Delegates also strongly opposed Question 1 on November’s ballot, the background check initiative, instead proudly declaring their support for a “God given right to keep and bear arms.”

They also passed a resolution denouncing the governor and every other Republican legislator who voted last year for the Commerce Tax, a small tax on the largest businesses in the state which funded many improvements to education. Naturally, they didn’t list the programs they’d like to eliminate along with the tax.

It’s no wonder Governor Sandoval decided to skip the convention.

But Republicans actually claimed the high road this year since they weren’t throwing chairs at the stage or screaming obscenities at the dais as some of Bernie Sanders’ supporters gleefully disrupted the proceedings at the Democratic convention. The chaos of that event came after a lawsuit from the Sanders campaign over convention rules and procedures was thrown out by a judge, and a loss in the organizing war resulted in fewer Sanders delegates being seated.

Sanders supporters refused to accept their situation and the near-riot resulted in casino security shutting down the convention due to safety concerns, a major embarrassment to

the party and the state. But no matter.

The Sanders zealots carried their grievances into the next day, defacing the state Democratic Party’s headquarters with graffiti of “Fire Roberta” (referencing party Chair Roberta Lange) and simply, although hardly eloquently, “you are scum.”

And we wonder why the average voter doesn’t want to participate in party politics.

Between the out-of-touch Republican platform and the outof-control Democrats, the parties continue to effectively push voters away from organized political activity, especially during presidential contest years when people are most interested in politics. The caucus structure doesn’t help either, disenfranchising voters who can’t participate and leaving many party members frustrated and even disgusted with a disorganized process that seems to undermine the sanctity of the private voting booth.

Nevada needs to eliminate the caucus and institute a presidential primary in time for the next election

cycle, preferably early enough in the presidential contest to matter.

Convention rules should be simplified and the process for selecting national delegates more transparent.

If Sanders wants to have any influence on the Democratic platform or priorities, he should agree to step out of a race he can’t win no matter how large of a temper tantrum his supporters throw. By not denouncing the violence and obscene rhetoric of his followers at the Nevada convention, the trickling of supporters who are starting to abandon him may turn into a torrent of Democrats appalled at the antics of the radical Bernie fans who booed Senator Barbara Boxer, left death threats for the chair of Nevada’s Democratic Party, and behaved like churlish children at the convention.

If the Sanders campaign continues to aid and abet these offensive tactics, in a race that he has all but lost, his ability to shape future policy will continue to wane. Better to step down now while he has a shred of credibility and influence left. Ω

Dueling ‘news’ Within minutes of each other, the two sides in the fight over ballot Question 1 put out news releases on May 16: At 11:15 a.m., Nevadans for State Gun Rights put out a news release headed, “Nevadans for State Gun Rights Unveils Anti-Bloomberg T-shirts and Gun Rights Bumper Stickers.”

At 11:42 a.m., Nevadans for Background Checks put out a news release headed, “Las Vegas Fraternal Order of Police Endorses question 1.”

The Bloomberg referenced in the first release is billionaire Michael Bloomberg, who is funding much of the Nevada campaign along with campaigns in several other states, although the initiative petition was placed on the Nevada ballot by signatures of Nevadans.

The Las Vegas police organization is the latest of several law enforcement organizations or individuals who have endorsed enactment of Question 1.

According to Nevadans for Background Checks, the measure “would provide for more background checks for all gun sales, with reasonable exceptions for family, hunting, and self-defense.” According to Nevadans for State Gun Rights, it would provide for “a federal universal gun registry.”

Definitive answer Recently we received a letter to the editor in response to Brad Bynum’s report “Licensed to ill” (cover story, April 28). The letter claimed, “California medical marijuana cards are only good in California as Nevada medical marijuana cards are only good in Nevada.”

Pam Graber, spokesperson for the Nevada program, reports in a prepared statement: “The following states have medical marijuana programs and issue medical marijuana cards: Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, District of Columbia, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, New Mexico, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Washington. The Medical Marijuana dispensaries of the State of Nevada are authorized to sell medical marijuana to card holders from the states above if the patient presents a state or local government-issued medical marijuana card.”

The Nevada card may not be recognized in some states.

GE crops adjudged safe The nation’s leading scientific panel says there is a scientific consensus that genetically engineered (GE) crops are as safe as other crops.

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine issued a report saying, in traditionally stilted scientific language, that “the committee could not find persuasive evidence of adverse health effects directly attributable to consumption of GE foods” and that there is “no conclusive evidence of cause-and-effect relationships between GE crops and environmental problems.”

The report also said that pest-resistant crops that poison insects through a soil bacterium reduces the need for farmers to use pesticides.

But the two-year study also said genetic food research is not yet leading to higher crop yields needed to deal with population growth.

The development of genetically modified wheat—which produced higher yields in the 1960s—dealt with famine and food riots in India, and there is hope that further research in the field will accommodate today’s terrific planetary growth.

The report was no surprise to scientists, but it acknowledged the folklore that challenges the science: “Policy regarding [GE] crops has scientific, legal and social dimensions. For example, on the basis of its review of the evidence on health effects, the committee does not believe that mandatory labeling of foods with GE content is justified to protect public health, but it noted that the issue involves social and economic choices that go beyond technical assessments of health or environmental safety; ultimately, it involves value choices that technical assessments alone cannot answer.”

It called for “transparency and public participation in the oversight” of crops by regulators to deal with the folklore.

School grants case nears state high court Lawsuits kept law inert A Nevada district judge has upheld the constitutionality of Nevada’s program for paying parents to take their children by out of public schools.

Dennis Myers Judge Eric Johnson said on May 18 that arguments by the American Civil Liberties Union were in avoidance of the issues at hand and ruled that the program does not breach constitutional prohibitions against the use of tax dollars for religious purposes, the thrust of the ACLU suit.

“They were worried about a system that was only accessible to the wealthy.”

Amanda Morgan Educate Nevada Now The program is available only to parents who remove their children from public schools. At that point they become eligible for grants in the $5,000 range that can be used for private schools. All the leading private schools in Nevada are religious.

“The state has no influence or control over how any parent makes his or her genuine and independent choice to spend his or her ESA [education saving account] funds,” Johnson’s ruling read.

Those funds, he wrote, are “reserved for educational purposes, and not for any sectarian purpose.”

The ruling still leaves the program far from implementation. If Johnson’s ruling survives the Nevada Supreme Court, there is still a second lawsuit by a group of parents that wields an entirely different legal argument against the program.

The program was enacted in 2015, delayed by various machinations, enjoined by Judge James Wilson on Jan. 11, and so has never taken effect. Democrats have said they will take action against it in the 2017 Nevada Legislature if they win back a majority in the November election.

The Nevada Constitution is highly anti-clerical. Nevadans twice voted to curb spending for religious purposes: “No sectarian instruction shall be imparted or tolerated in any school or University that may be established under this Constitution. … No public funds of any kind or character whatever, State, County or Municipal, shall be used for sectarian purpose.”

Another section revokes funds from school districts if they seek to pay for religious instruction. Since last year’s legislature, some supporters of the Nevada program have sought to discredit this language by characterizing it as the product of an era of anti-Catholicism.

Nevertheless, the language is in the constitution. And even without that language, which was added to the constitution a decade after statehood, the original constitution still has plenty of anti-clerical language, the product of a period of anti-Mormonism in Nevada.

The second lawsuit, which likely faces a June hearing, goes at the issue on other grounds than religion. There is constitutional language providing for a “uniform system of common schools” in the state and another, newer section whose inclusion was sponsored by Jim Gibbons in 2003 that says the education budget must be drawn up first during a legislative session, and then cannot be diverted.

In the case of the “common schools” language, lawyers for Educate Nevada Now—the group that obtained the injunction against the program—commissioned historian Michael Green to scrutinize the state constitutional debates and determine what the state’s founders had in mind.

“They were very clear that this education article was all about ensuring a strong public education system that wasn’t controlled by any particular faction,” said ENN attorney Amanda Morgan.

“They wanted a uniform public system where everyone was welcome. … They were very clear that they were worried about a system that was only accessible to the wealthy. And that was really one of their big concerns because at that time, there was a huge movement to make sure there was a common school system in all states.”

According to Reno GazetteJournal reports, about 80 percent of the people who have applied for the grants under the new Nevada program have median incomes greater than the average median income.

“It almost harkens back to what the founders were worried about,” said Morgan.

Supporters of the new law have pointed to a section of the constitution reading, “The legislature shall encourage by all suitable means the promotion of intellectual, literary, scientific, mining, mechanical, agricultural and moral improvements, and also provide for a superintendent of public instruction and by law prescribe the manner of appointment, term of office and the duties thereof.”

That is very broad, empowering language. But Morgan said it does not empower lawmakers to override

For nearly two years, University of Nevada, Reno doctoral student Anne Espeset has been helping collect cabbage white butterflies from all over the globe by as part of a citizen science effort called the Pieris Project. Now, with more Kelsey Fitzgerald than 1,400 specimens in hand, she and a team of researchers from across the U.S. are using these samples to learn about how species adapt to changes in their environment.

The cabbage white (Pieris rapae) is a small white butterfly with black wing-tips and one or two black dots on each forewing. Familiar to many vegetable gardeners, these butterflies lay eggs on the leaves of cruciferous vegetables, which are preferred food items for their hungry caterpillars.

“Gardeners do not like them,” Espeset said. “The caterpillars will eat your entire cabbage plant. They’ll eat anything in the Brassicaceae family—so, cabbage, radishes, broccoli, anything of that sort.”

Cabbage white butterflies are native to Europe, but have spread across Asia, North America, Australia, Hawaii and other locations. Small and fairly inconspicuous, they are now one of the most common and widespread species of butterfly in the world.

Although many research projects focus on rare or endangered species, the Pieris Project takes the opposite approach, focusing on how and why this extremely common species is able to do well in so many environments. To do so, they are recruiting citizen scientists from around the world to send in samples of cabbage white butterflies that they catch in their gardens or yards.

“These are a pest species,” Espeset said. “They came from Europe sometime in the 1800s, We’re trying to determine if that was just one introduction, or if there were multiple introductions across the United States.”

In her laboratory at UNR, Espeset sorts through thousands of tiny envelopes of butterfly wings. Some come from as close as Lemmon Valley, others from far-off locations like Japan and Australia. Working with advisor Dr. Matt Forister, Espeset’s particular research interest is in discovering whether the physical appearance of the cabbage white butterfly changes in different environments.

To study this, she analyzes each specimen for pigments called pterins, which are rich in nitrogen and responsible for the white color of the butterflies’ wings. In agricultural landscapes, use of nitrogen from fertilizers may make it easier for male butterflies to obtain the nutrients they need to make these wing pigments, says Espeset—a contrast to the conditions these butterflies face in non-agricultural environments.

“In a natural population, only good quality males are able to sequester and allocate these pterins to their wings, so then the female would want to choose those individuals [to mate with]. I’m seeing how human environmental change is affecting that natural process,” Espeset said. Ω

At the Nevada Democratic Convention,

reality was up for grabs “CHAIRS FLY IN NEVADA,”

read the subhead on the front page of the New York Times, describing events at the Nevada Democratic Convention on May 14.

They couldn’t print it if it wasn’t true, or so the folklore goes.

But the article by Yamiche Alcindor under that subhead does not substantiate the claim.

Nor do reports in other news or polemic outlets like Breitbart News, Associated Press, Los Angeles Times, Rachel Maddow, ABC News, CBS News, U.S. News & World Report, Business Insider, Reason Magazine, and the Hill, all of which reported the claim as fact.

The normal practice in journalism is to attribute such a sighting—“Delegate Mary Doe saw another delegate throw a chair,” something like that. But so far we have not been able to find a single attribution in any publication or broadcast report. The closest thing we found was one Associated Press photo caption that included the term “organizers said.” It did not identify them or say whether they were Clinton or Sanders or convention organizers.

A couple of publications used more cautious language. The Atlantic Monthly posted a piece reading, “The threats came after Bernie Sanders supporters reportedly threw chairs and booed Senator Barbara Boxer as she tried to speak.” (Emphasis in all cases is added.) A Real Clear Politics piece read, “They claim that Sanders supporters were throwing chairs.”

The Associated Press backed off the claim, slightly. A May 16 AP report by This is a longer version of a piece posted on our Newsview blog last week.

Michelle Rindels and Nicholas Riccardi read, “The gathering closed with some Sanders supporters throwing chairs; later, some made death threats against state party chairwoman Roberta Lange.” On May 17, the two no longer reported it as fact, but still reported it without attribution: “Supporters of Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders were accused of throwing chairs and making death threats against Nevada Democratic Party chairwoman Roberta Lange.”

Nevertheless, AP’s Erica Werner was still reporting on May 17, “It followed chaos at the Nevada Democratic Party convention Saturday night, where Sanders’ supporters threw chairs, shouted down speakers and later harassed the state party chair with death threats.”

The AP’s reporting is particularly important because its reports run in so many publications across the nation and around the world. The dubious nature of its information could be seen at the Lorain [Ohio] Morning Journal, where the AP story text said the chair-throwing was only an accusation, but the accompanying photo caption said it was fact.

When the original May 20 blog version of this article was posted, the party was keeping its distance from the chair claim. No one in the Democratic Party hierarchy had made the thrown chairs, at least so far as we had been able to find. It all originated with journalists.

However, after our article was posted, a prepared statement by Nevada Democratic Party executive director Zach Zaragoza was sent to the RN&R: “I saw chairs thrown, as did other members of my staff—end of story.

One of my staffers had to grab a chair from someone who was preparing to throw it at

myself and Chairwoman Lange on the stage.

I was on that stage during much of Saturday, and it was a terrifying situation. Security had to shut down the event after 10 p.m. because they couldn’t guarantee the safety of the room.

The Sanders campaign’s decision to downplay the chaos and violence they incited at our state convention is a blatant attempt to distract from their decision to add fuel to the fire instead of simply offering an apology and condemnation of what happened.”

But that statement was not released to the press until May 21. Journalists could hardly make use of it before that. The state party makes much of reporting by journalists who were not present. But this story is being covered around the world, from the London Daily Mail (which quoted Zaragoza on May 17, but did not yet have his chair statement) to the India Times. The aftermath of the 1968 Chicago convention riots was covered by many reporters who were not there.

Moreover, in a hall where security was present and police were called in, no one was detained or arrested for what would plainly have been a criminal act. Nor were there any injuries reported from thrown chairs, and it is hard to conceive of injuries being avoided in a packed hall from such an act. According to Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department public information officer Larry Hadfield, “We are not aware of any incidents. No arrests, no citations.” The department was not able to determine immediately if Zaragoza or anyone else later filed police reports of such incidents.

She kept an eye out for good visuals. She was the one who obtained the only known footage of a chair being raised. When asked if she would have seen a chair being thrown, she said, “Hell, yes. I saw the chair being lifted, and I shot it. Actually thrown, I would have seen it.”

She also said the density of the crowd would have made injuries unavoidable.

“Had a chair been thrown there is absolutely no way you would not have had an ambulance,” she said. “It was packed.”

She also said she believes, from the equipment she saw in the hall, that the party has its

Questions were raised about the chair issue very early, but no one came forward with sightings. Some have pointed to a couple of reports by local journalist Andrew Davey, but he didn’t report seeing chair-throwing himself or attribute it to anyone else. Several news sites are investigating how the story evolved. (Counterpunch has run a piece, “The Faux Fracas in Nevada: How a Reporter Manufactured a Riot,” that blames reporter Jon Ralston. It’s not clear how they arrived at that—they seem to fault him for not being a liberal—but there is plenty of blame to go around. Many of us got things wrong.)

Democratic U.S. House candidate Vance Alm agrees, and said he thinks the Sanders people were walking into a trap: “Everything that’s out there is complete garbage. … It was a total setup, planned.” (RN&R columnist Sheila Leslie, a former Democratic legislator, said, “There are definitely multiple views of what happened. I talked to some friends who were there; they saw chairs thrown, tossed, and held over head in a threatening manner.”

She incorporated that information into her column on page 6.)

In other words, the Sanders delegates in Nevada were trying to use the same rules Wasserman Schultz uses in presiding over the DNC—and they were refused even a vote on the proposal to switch to Robert’s. That happened at the start of the convention and set the tone, showing the Sanders delegates hostility from the dais.

Party officials say the Sanders delegates were more upset about the credentials report, but the Sanders delegates tell us otherwise, which is why they chanted “Robert’s Rules of Order” at one point. Losing the convention troubled them less than process in which a motion was ignored.

All this purple prose was prompted by a single sheet of paper with words on it.

Moreover, it is a minority report—something that has been routine at U.S. political conventions for a century or more. In his race against President Carter in 1980, Sen. Edward Kennedy filed a minority credentials report at the Democratic National Convention without anyone—much less other Democrats—saying he was inciting violence. If the Nevada convention rules forbade minority reports, it

The Snopes urban legend site has been monitoring the issue for several days and initially designated the chair story as “UNPROVEN.” It has more recently been ranked “FALSE.” In 2014, during the Bundy standoff in Bunkerville, which spread out over a wide outdoor landscape, someone on a highway overpass aimed a high powered rifle at federal officials. We know this because people saw it, photographed it. We even know the man’s name. It’s Eric Parker.

Yet in a smaller confined space—a convention hall—apparently there were chairs flying through the air, and the room full of news photographers and people with cameras and phones were unable to capture footage of it.

At any rate, we have been unable to find any.

To the contrary—there’s one piece of Adryenn Ashley footage that shows Sanders delegates preventing a delegate who had lifted a chair from doing anything foolish, then hugging him.

We interviewed one delegate who said she saw a frustrated delegate kick a chair against a wall, and some apparently tripped over chairs during the tumult. The more common response was that of Washoe delegate and 14 | RN&R |

Rules vote Democratic National Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz issued a statement condemning what happened in Nevada from her observation perch 2,000 miles away.

What most prompted the bad feelings in the Las Vegas convention hall and set the stage for everything that followed was that some delegates wanted a vote on a motion to substitute Robert’s Rules of Order for a set of rules that empowered the Democratic state chair who presided over the convention to decide who won floor votes. The state party rules read, “All votes taken at the State Convention shall be by voice vote unless otherwise noted. … If the Convention Chair is unable to determine the outcome of a voice vote, a vote of standing division shall be taken.” That appears to make it the decision of the chair whether to hold a real vote. Robert’s Rules provides for delegates to move for a “division of the house.”

One of the best indications that there was no chair-throwing is that it was not included in the complaint filed against the Sanders campaign by the Nevada Democratic Party with the rules and bylaws committee of the Democratic National Committee. That complaint, written by lawyer Bradley Schrager, says this was the worst thing that happened at the Nevada Democratic Convention: “The most egregious instance of the Sanders Campaign inciting disruption—and yes, violence—came as the State Convention’s Credentials Committee completed its work.

Adam Gillette, part of National Delegate Operations Team for the official Sanders Campaign, drafted and arranged for a member of that committee to attempt to deliver an incendiary, inaccurate and wholly unauthorized ‘minority report’ charging that the Credentials Committee had fraudulently denied 64 Sanders delegates their eligibility. The final delegate count had provided the Clinton Campaign with a 33 delegate advantage in the hall; one can imagine the rage occasioned by this inflammatory charge, tossed into the tinderbox of a tense convention hall. Not only did this discredit the work of the Credentials Committee—which featured five Sanders delegates and five Clinton delegates and a Sanders co-chair, and who worked all day under extremely trying conditions to be fair and diligent in their duties—it called into question the entirety of the proceedings because it indicated to an irrational minority that the proceedings had been rigged against them. Forcing their way onto the dais to deliver this paranoid fantasy of

Convention officers tried to prevent the reading of the minority report until another speaker yielded time for it. The effort to block the reading took longer than the reading.

The Sanders minority report was also an appeal of a political decision—pure speech.

Democrats always portray themselves as civil libertarians, but here they portray speech as violence—a McCarthyite stance.

Again, the Democratic complaint says this, not thrown chairs, was the “most egregious” thing that happened at the convention.

Presumably a violent act would have been listed ahead of a minority report among the most egregious items. Thrown chairs were not even mentioned in the NDP complaint.

Death thReats First let’s define the term. This is a death threat: “I am going to kill you.” This is not: “You should be killed.” There were no death threats against Nevada Democratic Party chair Roberta Lange. Poor taste? Sure. But this is the United States of America. We don’t have speech codes requiring politeness. U.S. Supreme Court Justice Hugo Black: “It is a prized American privilege to speak one’s mind, though not always with perfect good taste, on all public institutions.”

The “death threat” example used by the New York Times, for instance, was (in the Times’ shortened form) that Lange should be “hung in public execution.” The caller didn’t say he was going to hang her. He said, “This is a citizen of

the United States of America and I just wanted to let you know that I think people like you should be hung in a public execution to show this world that we won’t stand for this sort of corruption.”

The difference is more than semantic. In fact, the distinction was a factor in the early success of the U.S. Democratic Party.

John Adams requested from Congress and then signed a Sedition Act that made it a criminal offense to criticize the federal government. When Adams appeared in Newark and was given a 16-gun salute, one of his local critics was heard to say, “I do not care if they fired through his ass.” He didn’t say, “I will fire through his ass.” Was it a death threat or political expression? The man was imprisoned and Jeffersonian Democrats were outraged by such actions.

When one of the founders of the Democratic Party, Thomas Jefferson, was later elected president, he pardoned Adams’ speech victims.

In 1972, Sen. Edward Kennedy referenced this episode to emphasize the urgency of defeating President Nixon: “The founder of the Democratic party, Thomas Jefferson, attacked and unseated a government based on secrecy and repression and misuse of the machinery of justice.”

To be sure, the messages sent to Nevada Democratic chair Roberta Lange are often despicable. Expletives like cunt and bitch have no place in a system that seeks to govern through working together, or in a decent society. Posting Lange’s home address was irresponsible. And when they learned of these messages, Sanders leaders spoke up.

history of his campaign, wanted more evidence than the say-so of some local party officials. His caution served him well.

But in the end, it still needs to be remembered that these were just words, and politics ain’t beanbag. Once again, Nevada Democratic Party officials are afraid of words.

But did all this have anything to do with the Sanders delegates or the Sanders campaign? The Nevada Democratic Party—which claimed the Lange messages represented the Sanders campaign—released to the public contact information for the people who sent those vitriolic messages, whereupon the senders found themselves receiving nasty messages and getting calls from reporters. That’s when we learned that the messages to Lange didn’t come from Sanders campaign people, or even Nevadans. Rolling Stone and other media outlets interviewed some of them. They were people across the nation watching the convention on television or social media (“I was watching it with myself and my boyfriend”). Only one had a connection with his local Sanders campaign.

That didn’t stop the NDP from trying to define the entire Sanders campaign by its worst supporters. Would Secretary Clinton or any other candidate want to be so judged? (The party’s complaint specified it was faulting the Sanders campaign, not just individual supporters.)

One straw in the wind is that numerous reporters and politicos have begun saying it doesn’t really matter whether any chairs were actually thrown, that the issues are larger than just chairs, or something.

It matters a great deal. Chair throwing and death threats were the two things that were used to portray the Sanders campaign as reckless and violent—and that campaign has until now enjoyed considerable stature.

Without the chair throwing and death threats, what is left? A raucous Democratic meeting, the kind that has been going on in the party since 1791. In 1973, this reporter attended a Washoe County Democratic Central Committee meeting at Smorgy’s on Keystone Avenue where lawyer Bob McDonald and party activist Chow McGarry engaged in a full-fledged fist fight.

While the Sanders people have argued the convention officials suppressed votes and disenfranchised delegates, that may not be so. The convention may have been run strictly in compliance with the rules.

But it was not the job of convention officials just to keep the trains running on time.

It was also to use the convention to advance the party’s candidates in the general election campaign—including Hillary Clinton in the presidential race, in all likelihood. Instead, they did a good deal of damage to her ability to pull in Sanders supporters.

The Sanders people, whose regard for the Democratic Party that demonized them before the entire nation has not been enhanced by the experience, are moving on. This appeared on Facebook, posted by Sue Kephart: “Chain controls over Donner Summit. DNC demanding apology from Bernie Sanders.” Ω

n a recent Sunday evening, a peaceful, congenial crowd of about 50 people and two dogs gathered in City Plaza to memorialize AIDS victims. A wiry, bearded man was trying to address the crowd, but his voice was too quiet. His mouth was too far from the megaphone.

Someone yelled, “Closer!

Pretend it’s a wiener!”

It could have come off as an insulting gay slur, but it didn’t. The tight-knit group running the vigil believes that a little raunchy humor is good for comic relief. The crowd erupted briefly in giggles. The speaker held the megaphone closer, and the somber mood of the memorial was restored instantly. The “nun” who assisted the speaker is known as Sister MoraLee D’Klined, a member of Reno’s Biggest Little Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence. The group is a nonprofit that formed in 2008, a branch of an international group that originated in San Francisco in 1979.

Since then, around 80 local orders of drag queen-nuns have formed.

“There is no criteria to become a nun,” said a member who goes by Sister Wanda Sitonit. “It has to be a passion. It has to be a calling to want to help and serve your community. We don’t discriminate whether you’re biologically born a male or a female, whether you’re transgender,

whether you’re gay, straight, whatever it is. We accept you with open arms, because that’s the way we accept the community.”

Being a Sister is a commitment.

They rise through the ranks— “aspirant,” “postulant,” “novice” —to eventually achieve the ultimate status of “fully professed.” Each rank comes with additional responsibilities and the additional privileges of wearing a more authentic nun’s habit and more makeup. A postulant, for example, may camp it up all he or she likes with the eye makeup but must rise to the novice level to publicly sport lipstick, which is a symbol of one’s readiness to speak on behalf of the organization.

and clothing to the homeless, raising funds to award to grassroots organizations, and dropping by bars to hand out condoms during Reno Wine Walk events.

The anatomy joke about the megaphone wasn’t an isolated instance in which the sisters combined mischievous frivolity with more serious business. While the mood may be lighthearted during a “Condom Ministry,” the issue runs deeper.

“Too many young people— they’re not practicing safer sex.

They didn’t live through the early years of [the AIDS epidemic], seeing the whole community just die off,” said a veteran sister in a full habit, six strings of pearls and glamor-length false eyelashes. He goes by the name Papa Bubble.

Like all the Sisters, Papa Bubble uses only his nun’s name in public.

That’s partially to protect the Sisters’ safety, partially to ensure that no one risks being fired from a job for being a drag queen (though, Papa Bubble said, that’s less of a concern nowadays than it used to be), and partially to follow in the tradition of actual nuns and other

A few days before the AIDS memorial, Sister Wanda sat down for a cup of tea, and to talk about life as a drag nun. By day, Wanda is a 31-year-old introvert in a baseball hat, stud earrings and a three-day stubble.

In drag, however, “Wanda is an extrovert. She loves attention.”

Wanda also loves the opportunity that the costume provides to disarm strangers and strike up conversations.

“When you’re standing next to a 6-foot-tall drag clown, your insecurities aren’t going to be as [pronounced],” Wanda said. “I think that’s what we bring to the community. We’re an ear. Sometimes someone wants to say something and no one wants to listen to them.”

Wanda’s partner is a 28-year-old in a tank top with neatly gelled hair.

Ivanna explained what it’s like walking around dressed in high camp: “The way people interact with you changes. It’s almost like

You go out and you talk to people.

People open up to you. It’s weird to have people you don’t know tell you things about them that are personal or private.”

Wanda, who grew up Catholic, likened the experience to going to confession: “You know the priest is sitting there, but you don’t get to see his face.”

Ready to listen Just as the sisters’ mood switched gears from irreverent to serious at the AIDS vigil in City Plaza, they’re often called on to be the life of the party one moment, and a sympathetic ear for a distressed person the next. Once when the sisters were visiting a bar, a woman approached Ivanna to say that she was confused about how to react to the fact that her son had come out as gay.

“My response in that situation is, ‘What would you want as a person?’” Ivanna said, recalling the conversation. “You’d just want to be loved and accepted, and basically told, ‘You’re normal. And there’s nothing wrong with you, and we love you no matter what your decisions are.’ I told her about fighting through that coming-out process, and what it would have meant to have support from the beginning.

That’s the thing I like most about sistering, is just people feeling like

they can tell you things. … I work in a job where I get to talk to people all the time, because I manage a restaurant. But deep, dark secrets don’t usually get revealed when you’re correcting someone’s miscooked steak, you know?”

While the Sisters aren’t necessarily trained counselors, they are prepared to refer people to professional help.

“If someone’s in crisis and they want to kill themselves, we definitely know the suicide prevention hotline, all that stuff,” Wanda said.

“We do know those numbers.”

All in good fun Do the Sisters ever see any opposition from religious groups? Not much, they said.

“I’ve had a couple people get offended because we’re nuns,” said Wanda. “We tell them what we do and why we associate ourselves as nuns, because it’s a selfless job.

Then they’re like, ‘Oh, I thought you were mocking the Catholic Church.’”

“There is a portion of it that is a bit sacrilegious for the purpose of starting a conversation,” Ivanna added. “I think that’s part of the fun.

If someone wants to be offended, that’s their right, but the goal isn’t to offend people. It’s to start a conversation.” Ω

Still Water is on display at the NeverEnder Gallery, 25 Saint Lawrence Ave., through June 4

In her 11-piece engraved clay and drawn ink series, Orr’s women float, lounge, sit and submerge themselves in water.

They are shakily sketched and loosely proportional with backgrounds that reference Nevada landscapes—a line of mountain here, a circle of sun there, a few tick marks indicating sagebrush.

All tell semi-autobiographical stories that Orr insists are “never really me,” but rather “an evolved me or memory of myself.”

It’s also a shared memory for women—sitting in water. It’s what you do when you have menstrual cramps, and it’s the way you’re most comfortable when you give birth. Everyone floats in the womb. There’s just something about being in water that seems to buffer pain and give a person time to adjust to reality.

This is also true for Orr, who— at 19—is submerged in her own metaphorical pool, trying her best to become “fully formed.”

“I’ve just moved out on my own in the last 6 months,” Orr said. “It’s definitely challenging to acclimate to being a kind, emotional, full human being when there’s so many things that weigh down on you like school and work.”

As a graphic communications major at Truckee Meadows Community College and part-time T-shirt designer at CustomInk, Orr turns to non-digital art—ceramics and drawing—to ease the acclimation process and give her a creative fix.

“I’ve taken [ceramics] every semester for two years,” said Orr. “I’ve taken it so many times I can’t even take it as a class anymore. I just audit it.”

Orr’s hours in the studio seem to have paid off, because it’s the ceramic work in Still Water that stands out. Though the women in her blue ink drawings look nice, the women feel more distinctive in clay.

They’re fleshier, more stuck in their circumstances.

Because the ceramic lakes look so much like water—they’re made of melted blue glass—and the clay looks so much like earth—because it is—there’s a short line between the physical properties of the materials themselves and the images they represent. It’s no accident that Orr places her women in the protective circles of two substances that hold heat, diffuse energy, and steady them against their unstable environments.

A closer look at each woman reveals where she is on the continuum between peace and pain.

In “A Tendency to Run Away,” the woman hunches toward the mountains, back to the viewer, her head cocked to the side. Though her face is not visible, there is a distinct feeling of loneliness as she stands in water against a backdrop of craggy power and empty desert.

In “You Told Me I Cried Too Much So I Cried Myself a Whole Lake,” a figure surfaces from the water—The Ring-style—looking like she’s about two or three Kübler-Ross stages away from crawling out of the ceramic like a spider-person.

And then there’s the familiar calm that comes from solitude as the woman in “Nothing But A Water Vessel” soaks in a cave, surrounded by shallow water and stalactites. Her elbows rest on the side of the pool, and her hands cradle her head. She seems deep in thought.

“This is probably the best one that came out of the bunch,” said Orr. “She’s sort of accepting herself there and being there in that moment, in the cave. Ω

On our server’s suggestion, we tried an off-menu, deep-fried veggie plate ($7.99) that included a couple of green tomato slices, a handful of onion rings, a decent portion of okra, and a huge pile of green beans.

Though I really enjoyed the crunchy breaded beans, I would have traded half that amount for another slice or two of the tender tomato. Served with a side of ranch and a powerful housemade wasabi sauce, the plate fit the definition of guilty pleasure.

The ladies made a face when I ordered Mama Bessie’s Hog Head Cheese ($7.99), but how could I not with the menu’s challenge, “Don’t knock it till you try it!” Available in mild or spicy, my order featured several spicy triangles of what was essentially pressed and pickled meatloaf/sausage made from chopped bits of pig noggin, served with multigrain crackers and parsley. While superficially similar to processed meat products I’ve—unfortunately—previously tasted, this housemade recipe was something else entirely. The spice and seasoning did a lot to enhance the experience, and the snap of vinegar really pulled it all together. Perhaps not for everyone, but I enjoyed it.

A cup of Pattsy’s Dirty Gumbo ($5) featured a very authentic broth, thickened and flavored with filé powder to the point where it was more like gravy—exactly as it should be.

Though the menu indicated a classic

blend of sausage, chicken and shrimp, I mostly found sausage and a couple bits of chicken. Shrimp might have been in there, but I could neither see nor taste it, and there was a lot more rice than I’d expect. The flavor was pretty good, but—essentially—it was a cup of rice and gravy accompanied by the occasional appearance of meat.

Dinners come with a choice of two sides and either a roll or cornbread muffin. My wife and daughter both chose muffins and declared, “It’s cornbread.” My wife’s catfish dinner ($13.99) included a whole filet breaded and fried in seasoned cornmeal, with coleslaw and loaded mashed potato on the side. The slaw dressing was very light, not sweet, and had a little bit of spicy kick.

The potato mash was a little dry, but loaded with bacon, cheese and fresh chive—again with a hint of spicy heat. The fish was flaky, moist, and crunchy with the same seasoned coating used on the okra and tomato.

My daughter’s rib tip dinner ($12.99)—with greens and macaroni and cheese on the side—was a lot more food than expected. Three tender tips with plenty of meat were slathered in a tangy, sweet sauce with just a hint of smoke. I prefer more spice and vinegar, but the hungry college student enjoyed it perfectly well. The mac and cheese was akin to a pasta cake bound with cheese, but the collard greens were among the best I’ve tasted. Instead of being cut into strips and cooked near to death, squares of greens that still resembled leaves were sauteed with a perfect blend of bacon and spice. Spectacular.

More than one dessert beckoned, but we narrowed it down to just two: classic bread pudding with vanilla caramel sauce ($4.99), and an Apple Landslide ($6.99). The former definitely had the classic texture and plenty of raisins, two things not on my list of favorites. “Bomb,” was all my daughter murmured as she polished it off. The Apple Landslide was essentially an apple chimichanga with a cinnamon sauce drizzle and salted caramel ice cream. The housemade pie filling was tart and tasty, and the ice cream pairing put it over the top.

The lunch menu includes a lot of things I’d like to try on a future visit.

While not the only soul food option in town, The Mustard Seed definitely has its own take on Southern cuisine, as well as a few items you won’t find elsewhere. Ω

Captain America: Civil War

The Nice Guys I’m a huge fan of Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Shane Black’s scrappy, funny 2005 directorial debut. Black hasn’t done a lot of directing in its aftermath, with his lone theatrical directing credit since then being Iron Man 3, the second strongest Iron Man in the franchise.

He’s back to grittier film noir mode with The Nice Guys, a grimy detective story starby ring Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe. The Bob Grimm movie is good. Just good. It’s often so good, it’s painful to witness the moments that don’t bg r i mm@ newsr evie w.c om work.

Crowe plays Jackson Healy, an L.A. loser who takes punching requests from people.

Folks pay him to rough up child molesters, for the most part. He gets an assignment from Amelia (Margaret Qualley), who wants him to pay a visit to private detective Holland March (Gosling), a visit that turns out to be hilariously infused with comic violence.

Holland and Jackson wind up working on a case together, one that involves Amelia, a dead porn star, and a gun for hire named John Boy (Matt Bomer, relishing the chance to be super nasty).

When Gosling and Crowe are allowed to go off, the movie purrs on all cylinders. It’s when Black’s script (co-written with Anthony Bagarozzi) leads to a conspiracy involving Amelia’s mother, played by Kim Basinger, that it stalls out. That’s mainly because Basinger is tone-deaf in this film. She doesn’t seem to know what kind of movie she is in, and her line delivery is woefully over-the-top. In short, she’s blazingly terrible in her every scene.

I don’t blame Black for casting Basinger in a Los Angeles movie with Crowe. The two, of course, shared the screen in L.A. Confidential, and the idea of them together again is enticing. Basinger won an Oscar (undeserved) for that movie, but she won’t MAY 26, 2016

be getting any awards for this one—unless you count the “Bob Grimm Takes the Movie Down a Ratings Point Because You Sucked So Much Award” as a legitimate accolade.

The movie is more than saved by the Gosling/Crowe pairing. There’s a wonderful goofiness to many of their scenes. Crowe has a spit take that just might be his greatest screen moment ever, and Gosling has a Lou Costello stammering moment over a dead body that is hysterical. Actually, this movie almost counts as some sort of 1970s Abbott and Costello remake, with Crowe a twisted Abbott and Gosling the bumbling, drunken Costello.

Angourie Rice, who plays Gosling’s whipsmart daughter Holly, is a true scene-stealer, and this will count as her breakthrough role. She more than holds her own against Gosling and Crowe, and is often the most adult character in the movie. The young Aussie actress gets extra points for her spot-on American accent.

The visual palette is impeccably ’70s.

The film captures the rundown look of L.A. with nice touches, including a beat-up Hollywood sign along with Tower Records and Jaws 2 billboards.

There are lots of grays and browns in this film, with the occasional spark of hot pink and disco lights.

As somebody who was a young little dumb ass in that decade, I felt transported watching the film.

Gosling and Crowe are great together, and they should consider pairing up again for future films. They are so good you will forgive the film’s inconsistencies and convoluted plot. You won’t forgive Basinger, though.

I would love to see Crowe and Gosling in a monster movie. Universal Studios should abandon all of those modern spins on Frankenstein it’s currently churning out and just put these two in a period piece as a couple of bungling idiots trying to defeat the lurching beast. A great comic duo has been born.

Actually, Shane Black’s next movie is The Predator, a sequel to the Arnold Schwarzenegger monster movie, which Black had a supporting role in. Nobody has been officially cast yet. Get offers out to Crowe and Gosling—stat! Ω

This is a nice blast of superhero fun that finds a diplomatic way to include many Marvel favorites, even introducing a few characters to the modern Marvel Cinematic Universe, without feeling crowded or rushed.

Front and center, there’s Steve Rogers (former Human Torch Chris Evans), a.k.a. Captain America, still having bro issues when it comes to the Winter Soldier, Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan). Cap wants to back up his former best friend, but the guy committed some pretty shady acts while brainwashed, some of them very hard to defend. Captain America has to make some hard choices. Meanwhile, Secretary of State Thaddeus Ross (William Hurt) thought Age of Ultron sucked for more than the obvious reasons. On top of being kind of boring, it left death and destruction in its wake, as did the far more exciting original The Avengers. World leaders want to put the Avengers in check, using them as a sort of alternative to nuclear weapons. Tony Stark, a.k.a. Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr., still owning it) suffering a crisis of conscience, agrees to the proposed accord.

Rogers thinks it’s bullshit and won’t sign. This works as a fine setup for an eventual battle between Iron Man and Captain America, where both sides have compelling reasons to fight.

The Huntsman: Winter’s War

Four years ago, when Snow White and the Huntsman came out, Kristen Stewart was all the rage. The film made lots of money, and it looked like the former Bella had a new franchise on her hands. Not so fast.

Kristen, in a moment of shameful and delicious wickedness, made out in public—well, in front of somebody’s unauthorized camera, anyway— with that film’s married director, much to the chagrin of then boyfriend Robert Pattinson and, consequently, her fan base. Plans for a sequel starring her were scrapped, and a whole new plan featuring her costar and budding movie giant Chris Hemsworth (Thor!) were hatched.

What producers didn’t realize at the time is that Hemsworth basically sucks whenever he’s doing anything other than playing Thor. Blackhat, In the Heart of the Sea, Vacation, and now this mighty slice of hell are proof of that. While Snow White was no creative party, it was a tolerable misfire. This is a star-studded absolute mess. It’s a worthless slog of a sequel/prequel.

Charlize Theron returns as the evil Ravenna, with Emily Blunt and Jessica Chastain joining the sad party. And, of course, you have Thor on hand as the Huntsman, the most useless, banal role this guy has taken on in his mostly useless and banal career.

The Jungle Book

Jon Favreau’s delightful and funny take on the Rudyard Kipling’s tale of a boy raised by wolves is a winner. A young boy raised in the jungle is pursued by a pissed-off tiger (Idris Elba) who had his face burned by a human when he was young. When plans to leave for a human village are rudely interrupted, Mowgli (newcomer Neel Sethi) winds up staying in the jungle longer than he planned, and he must keep wearing the same pair of red baggy shorts. He encounters Kaa (Scarlett Johansson), an evil temptress snake, and other perils while building a special friendship with a big bear. And, as far as I could see, he never stops to wash those red shorts. A swim in the river doesn’t count.

You need detergent. Bill Murray is, indeed, a masterstroke of vocal casting as Baloo, the big bear who befriends Mowgli on his extended jungle trek. Casting Christopher Walken as King Louie, the Kong-sized master of all apes in the jungle, actually tops the Murray casting feat. It gives Favreau’s film an opportunity to become truly weird, very funny, and even a little scary.

The highlight comes when Walken’s King Louie, portrayed with undertones of Brando’s Colonel Kurtz, suddenly busts out “I Wanna Be Like You.” Walken is perfect for the song and perfect for the character, making the scene an instant classic. The special effects are topnotch.

After a few years on their TV show, the comedy duo Key and Peele come to the big screen with a lively kidnapped cat comedy boasting a high body count. Part John Wick and part Adventures in Babysitting, the film gives us Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele as Clarence and Rell, a couple of wimpy guys trying to get a beloved kitten back from some hardcore gangsters. them their cat back. The title character is, of course, the cat, who has to be the cutest kitten anybody has ever put in a movie. Clad in a doorag and jewelry, the multiple cats recruited for the part make this film an absolute necessity for cat lovers, even if you hate Key and Peele.

The felines steal every scene they’re in. The movie isn’t the most original piece of work this year. Fish-out-of-water scenarios are a dime a dozen, and much of the humor—Clarence’s obsession with George Michael, Rell’s trouble with women—is based on stuff we’ve seen before.

The Meddler

Susan Sarandon gets the fun vehicle she deserves with this fine directorial effort from Lorene Scafaria (Seeking a Friend at the End of the World), who also wrote the clever and sweet screenplay. Sarandon plays Marnie, a New Jersey widow who has moved to L.A. to be near her daughter, Lorie (Rose Byrne), a screenwriter dealing with the breakup of her latest relationship. Marnie has a bunch of money and a lot of time on her hands, so she calls her daughter constantly, brings her bagels, and basically drives her crazy. When Lorie heads back east to shoot a pilot, Marnie winds up befriending Lorie’s friends and making a few new ones, including Zipper (J.K. Simmons) and his chickens. Sarandon takes what could be a cliché character and makes her an endearing one, imbuing Marnie with a genuine warmness that makes her a welcomed “meddler” rather than a nuisance. Byrne disappears for a good chunk of the movie, but when she’s around, she and Sarandon have convincing motherdaughter chemistry. Simmons, normally the purveyor of brash, harsh and funny characters gets to show off his soft side, and Zipper is a real winner.

Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising

Director Jodie Foster goes for a 1970s throwback vibe while approaching a modern financial subject in this valiant but messy effort starring George Clooney and Julia Roberts. Clooney plays Lee Gates, host of Money Monster, a sensationalist financial program that features Gates dancing around the studio and making stock tips. Not all of Gates’ tips are winners, and he’s about to find out about the downside of bad advice. Kyle Budwell (Jack O’Connell) shows up on set as a delivery boy, but he doesn’t have pizzas. He’s got an explosive vest for Gates to put on, and a gun that says “Don’t turn off the cameras, we are going to be here for a while!” Producer Patty Fenn (Julia Roberts) has to keep the show rolling as her host is held hostage. Kyle lost a lot of dough on a Gates tip, and he’s here to tell us all how we are being suckered by “the Man.” What unfolds is woefully predictable, with Clooney and Roberts laboring to make it all entertaining despite its flatness and many clichés.

Obviously, the cold-hearted Gates will see not only the evil in companies he talks about on the air, but his own clumsiness. His heart will swell for his put-upon captor, and he will join him in solidarity against the evil corporate dictator Walt Camby (Dominic West), who stole Kyle’s money due to a “computer glitch.”

The first half of this Seth Rogen sequel is as funny and snappy as the first movie, but the movie loses its way a bit by the time credits roll. Still, if you are looking at laughs per dollar, Rogen and Zac Efron deliver your money’s worth. The spin this time out has a sorority led by Shelby (Chloe Grace Moretz) moving in next door to the Radners (Rogen and Rose Byrne). Shelby is determined to party like a frat does, and this leads to a semi-depressed Teddy (Efron) coming on as a mentor. This restarts Teddy’s war with the Radners, which is bad timing because their house is in escrow.

It’s during this stage when the film is at its nastiest best. When a booted Teddy joins forces with the Radners to destroy the sorority, things get a little misguided. The film has some of the funniest dialogue of 2016 (“Sometimes you have to suck a bunch of dicks to find out you don’t like sucking dicks”), and I’m always down for Rogen. Byrne is an undervalued comic actress, and Moretz fits right into the stoner mode. Efron gets the biggest laughs in the movie, even when it starts to get a little too busy. A garage gag involving those ever-pesky airbags is killer funny, as is another visit with the dean (Lisa Kudrow). As sequels go, this isn’t a great one, but it’s a worthy installment.

But when they apply that same approach to their music, it works—really, really well.

“I think it just kind of comes out,” said Daniel Lawson, one of the band’s two guitarists. “It’s the combination of all our tastes of music.”

“The very first practice that Daniel showed up—we didn’t even know this guy,” Bishop said. “He just hit us up on Facebook and was like, ‘Hey, I want to join you guys’ band.’ … We’re looking at his Facebook profile, and I’m like, ‘This guy’s from Grass Valley? Who the heck is this guy?’”

“I guess it didn’t say that I lived in Reno, so they’re like, ‘Is he just going to commute?’” Lawson said.

Lawson proved to be a natural fit for the band. His own musical style complemented that of his bandmates, and the group quickly went to work writing new songs and tweaking their old ones to include the second guitar.

“Between Justin and Daniel, they think of pretty cool stuff between them,” Walker said. “They’ll just randomly play stuff and then just bring it together. It makes it easier for me and Tenaya to lay it in behind.”

The guys set a date to record the first Atlas Frame EP just a few months after Lawson joined them.

InDepth includes three songs—“I am the Leader of My Own Death,” “Resonate” and “Trenches.” The official release took place during a May 15 show at the Holland Project.

According to James, the band is already working on songs for a second EP, which they hope to release next year. That means long nights spent in their rented space at the Musician Rehearsal Center in Sparks, where they can work on honing their fluid sound as well as their constant ribbing banter.

“We pretty much live together, Bishop said. “And—” “We hate each other,” Walker interjected. “But we love doing this. … Like, you know, getting to know Daniel, we don’t like him but he’s already in and—” “They can’t kick me out,” Lawson added.

“And so it’s like, it’s too late now,” Walker continued, over his bandmates’ laughter. “His stuff’s in there. It’d be inconvenient to kick him out. He pays part of the rent.” Ω

That combination defies categorization but, ultimately, seems to find its roots in the kind of instrumental post-rock that came out of the ’90s.

Using the type of time signature changes common to progressive rock, Atlas Frame songs like “Trenches” and “Resonate” manage to flow seamlessly from echoing, liquid guitar solos to dense, heavy metal drum and bass lines, before circling back again. The result is reminiscent of the way separate movements come together in a musical suite.

“It’s weird because none of us listen—for the most part—none of us really listen to the kind of music that we play,” said drummer John Walker.

Walker and Atlas Frame’s other guitarist, Justin Bishop, have been playing together since their early teenage years, experimenting with ways to combine Bishop’s classic rock influences from bands like Rush and Walker’s love of groups like Coheed and Cambria. The sound that would eventually define Atlas Frame began to emerge in 2013 when they were still students at

The Space Whale fundraiser featuring Skrillex

T

he renowned DJ returns to Reno to headline a benefit show for "The Space Whale" art project on Friday, May 27. The art installation is a 50-foot-tall stained glass and steel humpback whale sculpture that will debut at this year’s Burning Man before traveling to six countries around the world. The sculpture is the creation of the Pier Group, a collective of artists who created the Pier, Pier 2 and Embrace art installations for Burning Man in 2011, 2012 and 2014, respectively. The show is being touted as “not your average Skrillex show,” featuring visual

art by Android Jones, one-of-a-kind staging, art cars, a vendor village, live painting and fan participation. The litter prince My boyfriend and I just moved in together, and it’s going well except for how he leaves empty containers and trash everywhere. I asked him to please just put these in the garbage. He did this—for a single day. These empties everywhere are driving me crazy, not because I mind picking them up but because I feel disrespected.

It’s weird, because he’s otherwise sweet and attentive.

That used Q-tip is only a collectible if he used to be Elvis.

Of course, because your eyes go right to the empty cans and fast-food carcasses, you’re thinking his must, too.

Maybe—but maybe not. Psychologists Irwin Silverman and Marion Eals contend that men and women evolved to have differing spatial abilities, corresponding with the sexual divisions of labor—men as hunters and women as gatherers (of salad and appetizers).

Experiments by Silverman, Eals and others support this theory. Men have more distance-oriented visual and navigational abilities, which would have been useful for tracking prey across a big plain: “Yo, bros, I believe that’s dinner!” Men also excel at “mental rotation”—turning objects around in their minds—which would have helped them land a spear in a moving four-legged dinner entree before it got away.

Women, on the other hand, do far better (sometimes 60 to 70 percent better) on tests of “object location memory”—remembering objects and their placement in a setting. This ability for noticing and recalling detail would have helped them remember wee landmarks pointing back to where to find those yummy grubs. It’s less helpful with a boyfriend who waits to toss trash until it requires a backhoe.

The fact that your boyfriend tidied up upon request suggests he cares about your feelings. His doing that only once maybe just means it isn’t a habit. Habits—behaviors we do pretty automatically—get ingrained over time through repeated action. They are triggered by cues in our behavior and environment. Unfortunately, for him, the action of throwing back, say, the last drop of Mountain Dew has been associated not with slam-dunking it into the wastebasket but with leaving it on the coffee table for the archeologists to find.

You could try to help him make the trash-trashcan association, maybe by one day tacking notes on the empties—like “Hello, Mr. Archeologist. I was enjoyed in 2016.” The reality is that he may not always remember, in which case you should remind yourself that a guy who’s otherwise “sweet” and “attentive” isn’t leaving the mess to mess with you. do his part around the house (washing the cars, bringing in the garbage bins, etc.) so you can pick up after him with a laugh instead of loathing. Someday, you two may bring new life into the world, but it shouldn’t be a mystery fungus inside a Chinese food container that got kicked under the bed.

Irreconcilable indifferences My girlfriend of two years seems to be gradually moving me out of her life. Seeing her two or three times a week has dwindled into maybe once—and no overnights. She’ll meet me at the movies and then ditch me afterward, saying she’s got a bunch of things to do. She denies anything’s wrong, claiming she’s just “very busy.” I think there’s more to it.

People talk about what a high falling in love is, and they aren’t wrong, because their body’s basically in the throes of a biochemical drug binge. University of Pisa psychiatrist Donatella Marazziti looked at blood samples of people who’d been madly in love for less than six months and found that they had serotonin levels comparable to people diagnosed with obsessive-compulsive disorder.

1916, at the height of World War I, the Swedish schooner Jönköping set sail for Finland, carrying 4,400 bottles of champagne intended for officers of the occupying Russian army. But the delivery was interrupted.

A hostile German submarine sunk the boat, and the precious cargo drifted to the bottom of the Baltic Sea. The story didn’t end there, however. More than eight decades later, a Swedish salvage team retrieved a portion of the lost treasure, which had been well-preserved in the frosty abyss.

Pioneer Dr. Mary Guinan is one of the world’s most distinguished physicians. What was it like writing about your experiences?

The difficulty I had was talking about taking care of people of AIDS. … And I really wasn’t going to write about it because it was just so difficult. I couldn’t really talk to anyone about it during that time because confidentiality—patient confidentiality. ... [But] I read an article

by Hugh Ryan. He’s an openly gay man who writes for the [New York] Times and other publications. He wrote this article called “How to Whitewash a Plague” [New York Times, Aug. 3, 2013, http:// tinyurl.com/zg8ckn2] and it was about a museum that had a showing of the early AIDS epidemic in New York City. And according to him, it showed how everyone came together to help gay men. That hadn’t been my experience. He criticized it. It closed before I went to New York, so I never saw it myself, but he gave me the door to open the door, to talk about how

heading up that ridiculous puritanical witch hunt against Prez Bubba in 1998 also happened to be a man who got his sexual jollies by seducing the teenaged boys participating in his school’s wrestling program, where he was the coach. What are we to make of this now confirmed revelation?

What can we deduce from this horrific hypocrisy? This is some breathtaking shit, even for a Republican. I mean, this is some gall, y’all!

Try to imagine just how completely skullfucked Dennis Hastert had to be as he walked the hallowed halls of the House of Representatives, mixing the slaphappy tales of the president’s lightweight sex romps with his own memories of dark pleasures provided by his bewildered wrestling boys. How do you even pull your socks on with bizarre, evil flotsam like that bouncing around in your head?

Tell me what the anthrax episode when you were state health officer was like? [A month after September 11, mail suspected of being laced with anthrax was delivered to an office in Reno.]

The public reaction was very frightening.

Everybody was frightened, and it’s understandable. Anthrax is very dangerous. There was a great demand to get antibiotics from physicians. The antibiotic used for anthrax was sold out in Nevada. Everyone tried to get together and decide what to do, and we really didn’t have time to do that, talk to all the various people and say, “OK, let’s have a strategy.” We were constantly putting out fires because we had all sorts of reports of powder, that they had gotten a letter with powder in it and we’d have to investigate that, and people were demanding to have antibiotics. … The letter was sent to the state health department laboratory at [the University of Nevada, Reno], and it was identified as anthrax at that laboratory. Then the sample was sent to the CDC for confirmation. … The CDC said that it was not anthrax. They said it had been misidentified. So that’s that.

It made everything OK. In the meantime, I can’t tell you how many doctors called me and told me they were going to prescribe the antibiotics for whoever came in, because how do you know? Ω

You also wrote about your India years?

Yes. ... I went to the CDC because I wanted to be part of the smallpox eradication program. It was like this incredible idea that someone had. I was finishing medical school and just about that time Kent State happened, and I was just really upset about that because my parents were immigrants and, as a child of immigrants, we always thought about this country being the greatest country in the world and how wonderful and lucky we are to be here and there’s no place like it—and these unarmed students were killed, and then it was like covered up.

And so I thought, I’m not sure what I want to do now, but I would like to do something that our government was doing that was good. And I read about the smallpox eradication program. A hundred and sixty five countries of the world decided that they were going to eliminate smallpox in the world—a scourge from very ancient

times, a horrible disease! And so I wanted to be a part of it. … I found out from a colleague that there was program at CDC called the Epidemic Intelligence Service, where you learn to be a medical detective. … I eventually got accepted. They weren’t letting women in for a while [laughs].

Well, that Bloom has moved north and is happening right now/right here, and it’s pretty freakin’ great. This holiday weekend, it’ll still be on in the hills of Peavine Peak, Spanish Springs, Washoe Valley—hell, all kinds of places that are currently shimmering with sage green and large splashes of mauve (which are millions of aging cheat grass). It’s been a most enjoyable and glorious spring for flower hunters of the West. Muchas gracias to El Niño!

Roger? At first, I laughed at this Boomer Rock God invasion of Palm Springs in October. And then, I realized—I gotta be there! I mean, damn, how can I not be there?
