Fatal attraction Welcome to this week’s Reno News & Review.

This week’s cover story originally ran on Gawker. com, but we thought RN&R readers would want to see the latest chapter in a saga that has played out largely in our pages. We know as well as anybody how hard former RN&R editor D. Brian Burghart worked building Fatal Encounters, his database of people killed by police. Since leaving his position at the RN&R earlier this year, he’s devoted even more time to the project.

He started it back in 2012, and we ran a series of stories he wrote related to the project throughout 2014. Those stories and the database won some prestigious recognition from the Nevada Press Association and the Association of Alternative Newsmedia, but it was still disheartening to hear that the Washington Post had won a Pulitzer Prize for the “innovation” of imitating Fatal Encounters.

It might seem petty to argue about who developed what database first—especially when we’re talking about a subject as serious as people killed by law enforcement—but it does matter. It matters because this story illustrates how a well-heeled news organization—especially one with the established reputation that comes with breaking the biggest investigative news story of the last century—can copy other people’s ideas and still be called “innovative.” And it matters because it illustrates how difficult it can be for a plucky little independent news organization to get the recognition it deserves. And it matters because honesty matters.

It’s a little reminiscent of the music industry, where it doesn’t matter how good a band or artist is; the ones who sell records and win awards are the ones with corporate major label backing.

Measuring candidates

by Sanders Re “Forward to the past” (Left Foot Forward, April 14): Sheila’s sly suggestion that Clinton is the champion of the $15 an hour wage is funny beyond Hillary-ous.

Fact is, she has been dragged kicking and screaming into the real world

by Bernie, and even yet her webpage still says $12 an hour is enough for us “little people.”

And before you paint me as an anti-feminist (I’m not), let me say that yes, it is time for a woman president, but not this one. I would eagerly vote for Elizabeth Warren, in a heartbeat.

A woman who fights to regulate and prosecute crooked Wall Street banksters is far superior to one who takes their money on the sly for giving “secret” speeches that we’ll never, ever hear about.

I will support and vote for courageous women, ones like Lucy Flores, who bravely stood against the Clinton Machine special interests, and instead endorsed a peoples’ candidate—you know, that socialist democrat guy who wants health care for all, and greedy CEOs to be brought to justice, and an end to corrupt money buying elections.

All in all, I will vote for any candidate who is Bernie-friendly, regardless of whether they are Dem, GOP, Libertarian, or even those silly AIP folks if they start to make any sense.

The good news is I will vote to bring about the defeat of the Evil Obstructionist Republican Congress, which has held America hostage for far too long.

If that’s not good enough for you, well, that’s how the cookie crumbles. I’m too weary of having to vote for conservative Democrats in a world in peril.

Our man in Tempe Having become aware of extraordinary incompetence and waste in a state agency, I shouldered some civic responsibility and went to testify at a Senate appropriations committee hearing. The experience was rather shocking and showed me why our government no longer works. The senators were polite, interested and appreciative. However, when the hearing was over, a lobbyist for the state agency angrily confronted me and told me that I had no right to come down to the Capitol and criticize “his client.”

Really? I, a state citizen, taxpayer, and voter, have no right to speak to our elected representatives? Where does such unbridled arrogance come from?

The issue: Reno Aces security moved the security guard from Fourth and Evans to a location in the middle of the block past the bus station. With the cars having to make U-turns in Erik the middle of the block and all the pedestrian traffic going to the game, this has led to numerous close calls.

Someone is going to get hurt.

My attempt at resolution: I asked one of the security guards standing in the street—a nice, helpful man in his 50s or 60s—if I could speak to a supervisor regarding the dangerous situation on Evans. He radioed my request and then I stood there 30 minutes engaged in pleasant conversation with the guard waiting till two very young (positive they’d never shaved yet) gentleman arrived and told me they were supervisors. After I told them my feelings, they abruptly dismissed me with a very cavalier attitude

Subsequently, I slowly learned how much our elected representatives are manipulated by lobbyists. Politicians come and go, but the lobbyists are always there. They give politicians cash, are on transition teams after elections, and write bills during legislative sessions. At times, they even presume to speak for the government. I once attended a public meeting where an authoritative sounding person was saying that what the people wanted would not even be considered. From the message being given, I assumed the speaker was a member of the governor’s staff. Later, I learned that person was a lobbyist.

For a republic to work properly, lobbyists need to be reined in. They are currently required to register with the state, but there are few other restrictions. Change is needed. To start, there need to be term limits for lobbyists. No one should be allowed to be a lobbyist for more than 5 years. We need to have our elected leaders operate our government, not the lobbyists.

Who cares about the Pulitzer Prize?

I think people that care about the Pulitzer are people that really want excellence in journalism and want stories to be told both objectively and thoroughly.

Yeah, I do care the Pulitzer. I think it’s not the best award, but it helps journalists be recognized for doing their job well. I think it’s something all journalists should strive for.

Who cares about the Pulitzer Prize?

Wow. Well, I’d say, obviously, every journalist, but everyone that’s also a concerned citizen who wants knowledgeable and unbiased information.

Fiasco University of Nevada, Reno President Marc Johnson has been a disappointment to a lot of people who wish the campus well. That’s OK. It’s kind of the job of university presidents to disappoint people. Back in the 1970s, the UNR yearbook Artemesia ran a gallery of photos of all the previous campus presidents with their names and fates, all of which were unhappy—“fired” or “forced out” or whatever.

But even by the standards of college presidents, President Johnson’s behavior in the case of Yann Hufnagel has been abysmal.

Johnson hired Hufnagel just after the University of California, Berkeley assistant coach had been fired from that campus for sexual harassment of a reporter, to which Hufnagel admitted. It’s another instance of different standards being used when college sports are involved, with Johnson apparently bewitched by the notion that Hufnagel is a “recruiting genius,” as the local cliché has it.

This case is reminiscent of the ethics case against the late Kathy Augustine, Nevada state controller who admitted her misdeeds and paid a fine when the case was before the Nevada Ethics Commission, then mounted a defense when the forum changed to the Nevada Legislature and impeachment. Hufnagel admitted appalling conduct, but then planned an appeal (since dropped), yet Johnson puts UC Berkeley and Hufnagel’s alleged victim on trial in order to justify the hiring.

“We weren’t reinvestigating the case,” Johnson told journalist Jon Ralston. That’s exactly what Johnson was doing—examining cherry-picked documents offered by Hufnagel and examining reports on the sports website Deadspin and then claiming they supported his decision.

That’s reinivestigating. Johnson was just doing it badly.

The headline on one of the Deadspin articles reads, “Fired Cal Coach Who Asked Reporter For Three-Way Gets Nevada Job, Releases Docs Which Prove Nothing,” which certainly seems to suggest that Marc Johnson’s view of the documents is not universally shared. And the article is full of items like this: “As Hufnagel’s team writes, ‘Complainant continued to reach out to Mr. Hufnagel by text after their night at the brewpub, they continued their flirtation, and Mr. Hufnagel continued to help her with her job.’ The record shows, however, that they didn’t text for almost a month after the incident, which was during the heart of college basketball season, and that the conversation was strictly professional.”

In other words, Johnson is finding in this material something that confirms his own now embarrassing decision, though few others can find it there. He needs to cut his losses and stop seeking redemption. This was a screw-up.

In second guessing the UC investigation with one-sided material, Johnson does not have and will never have the same information UC Berkeley had. He has some documents and interviews with one person. He cannot experience the full range of information and documents, much less the demeanors, facial expressions, voice inflections that the UC probe did, and which are essential. Lawyers often say that no one can second guess a jury unless they were in the courtroom whenever the jury was.

Johnson has embarrassed Nevada with this fiasco.

One more note: This story should not have been covered by sports reporters. It is not a sports story, and maybe some news reporters could have described Hufnagel’s former campus for readers with more than three letters or a team name. Ω

Higher education lowers itself As a Graduate Teaching Assistant at the University of Nevada, Reno in the late ’70s, I was shocked the first time I was approached by the athletic department with offers of free tickets to the then enormously popular Wolf Pack games.

The catch? Just make sure the football players in the required Spanish class I by taught received a passing grade.

Sheila Leslie That experience ensured I was never going to be much of an alumni supporter. Over the years, I’ve watched as enormous, opulent buildings contributed to campus sprawl while abysmal minority graduation rates were minimized along with the accomplishments of female and minority faculty.

I now occasionally teach a class on the lowly “Letter of Appointment” status, where adjunct faculty are paid a fraction of a salary to handle large classrooms of students, assisting the Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) meet the pressing demands of an exploding enrollment with insufficient funds to hire permanent faculty.

and intellectual freedom, I’ve enjoyed the process of molding young minds and connecting academia to the “real world” of public policy.

When I served in the Legislature, it was no secret that NSHE executives held us in low regard. They delighted in pointing out the low percentage of legislators with a college degree. I observed NSHE lobbyists undermine the efforts of K-12 superintendents in battles for education funding. Campus presidents were threatened with unemployment if they shared off-limits information with key legislators. To their credit, many secretly did anyway.

But my historical distrust of NSHE boiled over in 2014 when University of Nevada, Las Vegas President Donald Snyder suppressed a study by the university’s Center for Business and Economic Research because it pointed out the Education Initiative would net 13,000 jobs and add $1 billion dollars to Nevada’s Gross Domestic Product, which was not the position of the business elite. I was appalled when Chancellor Dan Klaich backed him up.

Later that year, there were plagiarism charges when large sections of a draft study from a think tank, Brookings Mountain West, were incorporated into a NSHE report more to the system’s liking, without permission or attribution.

Then, last September, the Board of Regents confronted allegations that Klaich had pressured consultants to change a report about Nevada’s community colleges because he thought it too negative. Like many, I found the public sympathy-fest of family, friends and political leaders on Klaich’s behalf unseemly, implying that anyone who questioned Klaich’s integrity should be ashamed of themselves. “The Chancellor is guilty—of caring too much,” proclaimed Regent James Leavitt. Nothing was done about his questionable actions.

Next week, the chancellor who cared too much will face grilling by the press, and perhaps the Regents, over the latest consultant scandal uncovered by the Las Vegas ReviewJournal. Apparently, the Chancellor’s increasingly cozy relationship with

his favored consultants resulted in NSHE ghost-writing a memo on the consultant’s letterhead, answering questions from a legislative committee as if the supposedly independent firm had reached that conclusion instead of NSHE. Even the Teflon chancellor can’t emerge unscathed from an unethical situation of this magnitude.

Meanwhile, legislators are competing to see which party can make more political hay with their thundering promises of reform. But more whistleblower protections won’t change a university culture obsessed with hiring basketball coaches, even those fired by other universities for sexual harassment at a time of national heightened awareness of this problem on college campuses. It’s no wonder the arrogance of UNR’s athletic department goes unchecked when the Board of Regents refuses to insist its own executives exemplify a university’s core values of honesty, integrity and freedom of expression.

A Tier One university system?

One indication of why “the development community” is taking such an interest in UNR’s gateway project is the number of contractors who could benefit from it. This array of contractors’ signs appears on the $46 million UNR fitness center now under construction just south of Lawlor Events Center.

Buffett on net metering Warren Buffett last week repeated to his shareholders the same explanation that his local functionaries have given for why he and his company leaned on Nevada regulators to hike financial costs for net metering customers in the Silver State.

“Ninety-nine percent of our consumers were being asked to subsidize the one percent that had solar units,” Buffett said. “I personally think that if society is the one that’s benefiting from the reduction of greenhouse gases, that society should pick up the tab.”

While that explanation has been widely repeated, an independent report commissioned by the Nevada Public Utilities Commission said net meterers are not being subsidized by other customers. Only a report by NV Energy—a subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway Inc.— makes that claim.

Buffett’s comments came at a stockholders meeting of Berkshire, which owns NV Energy and 90 other businesses—energy, insurance, manufacturing, railroad, retail and other firms. He also said Berkshire can live with either Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton as president.

“If either Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton becomes president, and one of them is very likely to be, I think Berkshire will continue to do fine,” he said.

Berkshire also did not join the growing list of corporations expressing their concern about climate change, including nine of the nation’s largest firms—such as Walmart and Goldman Sachs—that announced they are switching to renewables for all their power. Berkshire stockholders rejected a resolution calling on the corporation to report on the risks faced by its insurance companies as a result of climate change. Buffett declined entreaties that he take a stand against fossil fuels.

Amid the debate on net metering, the public relations specialists at NV Energy chose this week to announce the corporation is making low-cost renewable energy available—to large users.

What goes around Peabody Coal, the world’s largest privately owned coal company, filed for bankruptcy in April.

Peabody is currently the focus of a book, Unreal City, that describes how Western politicians in the mid- to late 20th century manipulated Hopi and Navajo tribes in Arizona to obtain their land, water, and massive coal deposits to feed the growth of cities like Phoenix, Las Vegas and Los Angeles. Peabody was the corporate beneficiary.

The bankruptcy is raising concerns about Peabody’s pension and reclamation obligations and whether they will be fulfilled.

More one-party elections Last week we reported on races that use the primary election instead of general elections to elect public officials. It happens when only members of one political party file for an office. All other voters—the opposing party, third parties, nonpartisans—are barred from voting for the officials who represent them.

Word keeps arriving of more races in which this is happening.

According to the Pahrump Valley Times, two county commissioners in Nye County will be elected solely by Republican voters. In commission districts one and three, only Republicans filed for those seats so nonpartisans, third party voters, and Democrats will be prohibited from voting on who their county commissioners will be.

In Washoe County, the Nevada Assembly district 26 and County Commission district 4 races are limited to Republican voters.

Mixed message The University of Nevada, Reno is getting full use out of the term gateway. Besides its plan for removing the neighborhood just south of the campus, UNR has a University Studies Abroad Consortium student gateway account, an annual Fulbright Gateway Orientation, the Gateway Plaza at the student union (which is far distant from the historic homes), and a Gateway Math Course.

And recommendations 38, 39 and 40 in the Urban Land Institute’s recent report to the city all read, “Add a City of Reno / UNR gateway monument at the corner of Virginia + McCarran Streets.” The recommendations don’t explain why they call for the marker.

Southbound Campus wins homes battle The Reno City Council gave the University of Nevada, Reno campus what it wanted last week, signing off on a master plan by change that allows UNR to do what it Dennis Myers wishes with a lineup of 19th century homes off the campus. The council might have liked to do otherwise—it did cancel transfer of a park to the campus—but both citizens and councilmembers themselves pointed out that the council had helped create the problem by interfering in university affairs when the campus was planning to expand to the east. The council wanted the campus to start moving downtown, to the south.

Marc Johnson UNR President council began when the UNR dispute was scheduled to be heard, but the council was running behind and first heard discussion of a labor-business compromise that settled an issue of licensing of plumbers and electricians.

There was little of that kind of cooperative spirit on the campus item.

UNR President Marc Johnson used soft words like “working together” but gave not an inch on the issue of constructing a new business building on the site now occupied by a lineup of Queen Anne homes on the west

side of Center Street—directly across the street from two campus-owned vacant lots.

“What we can say is that we do need to, right away, identify a location for a business building so that we can begin raising funds for that,” he said.

Several weeks ago, the Reno City Council delayed action on the master plan and told the campus and historic preservationists to meet and try to work out an agreement.

Reno Historic Resources Commission chair Alicia Barber told the council last week, “You charged the HRC and UNR with showing you how this collaboration could work.”

She quoted Johnson at that earlier meeting telling the council, “We are committed to work with the HRC and start from scratch. We haven’t got the building built yet or designed. We will continue that discussion and find some good alternatives before we finalize the design.”

But Barber said the campus did not start from scratch and barely participated in two meetings held since the council put the two groups together.

She called the two meetings “very disappointing.”

At the first meeting, she said, “One of the university planning consultants was in attendance but did not participate at all in the conversation. The university did not even provide a map or engage in a discussion of how the historic houses could be incorporated into their plan. … They heard us out.

They reiterated their position.”

At the second meeting, this one

open to the public, she said, “They did not come prepared with a presentation or statement. They did not present their current plans for the business building and gateway, which I’m pretty sure are completed. They did not show any renderings. They did not even bring an architectural planning consultant with them. Instead President Johnson informed us again that their new College of Business building would be sited on the west side of Center Street.”

She reminded the council that Johnson had promised to provide the alternatives to the council. “I don’t think you have seen any alternatives, and I certainly have not seen any alternatives.”

Johnson said, “I would characterize our conversations a bit differently than they have been portrayed to you. We have come together on several occasions. ... But we have also expressed our interest that in the next 20 years, about the only direction the university can grow with academic buildings is to densify the region south of the campus. …

“We’ve also made it clear that we cannot today tell you exactly what the building construction plan will look like in this area ... because we don’t know how the community is going to develop south of the highway. We don’t know the exact developments of the university itself over the next 20 years. We can’t tell you exactly what will go in the next two or three buildings in the gateway area. … So we will say we hope that you will adopt the general master plan of the university into the city. We commit to continuing to work on options for the preservation of historic resources, these historic homes. We don’t know that they necessarily have to stay in the locations that they are, and we will work on some options in that regard. … The growth of the university is going to be rapid and large, and it’s going to be very important to the future of this community.”

Businesspeople were present to tell the council they support Johnson’s plans. The lineup of 19th century homes are immediately adjacent to Interstate 80, which was put through the center of Reno in the 1960s at the behest of the business community instead of north of Reno through undeveloped land.

Downtown developer Par Tolles: “If the handcuffs are not taken off of this university’s ability to grow and thrive, even when it involves some difficult decisions, we will squander what is a unique window of

opportunity to enhance arguably our greatest attraction to this city. I urge you, the education council, to support the gateway expansion and send a positive message to the business community.”

Economic Development Authority of Western Nevada president Mike Kazmierski: “Your support sends a message not only to the university that you trust them to be responsible in what they’re doing but that you’re also really telling the development community that you’re going to engage in and be a part of this reinvention of our downtown.”

John Griffin of the Eldorado Casino and Associated General Contractors lobbyist Alexis Miller also supported the project. University official Heidi Gansert did not speak but recorded her support. Two homeowners in the campus neighborhoods were heard. Frankie Sue Del Papa, a former Nevada regent and UNR student body president who lives west of the campus, said the two sides should be working together as the unions and business had worked on the plumber/ electrician problem.

“This is a work in progress,” Del Papa said. “It’s a partnership. …

Make sure everyone’s feet are held to the fire.”

She also said the UNR-proposed shutdown of Center Street would create “real transportation problems.”

She previously sat on the Nevada Transportation Board.

Alicia Barber Reno Historic Resources Commission and described himself as a UNR supporter, told the council, “And I really think if there had been public input into the project in a formal sort of way, that all of this stuff would have come up, probably in front of the neighborhood advisory board for ward five. ... Knowing the university, they’ve built two or three major projects right next to where I live, and I’ve had absolutely no warning until they put up fences. And this kind of doesn’t sit well with homeowners in there.”

In the days after the meeting, Barber wondered if UNR—a state agency—is in violation of Nevada Revised Statute 383.121, which requires state agencies to cooperate with the Nevada Historic Preservation Office “in order to salvage or preserve historic evidence located on property owned or controlled by the United States, the State of Nevada or its political subdivisions.” Barber said the university has not made contact with the Preservation Office.

The City Council mandated cooperation between the campus and historic preservationists, but it is nonbinding language. Ω

City Council Member Naomi Duerr is working with the Urban Forestry Commission to increase Reno’s tree canopy.

Urban jungle Restoring Reno’s tree canopy City Council Member Naomi Duerr and the Urban Forestry Commission are on a mission to bolster Reno’s disappearing tree canopy through a new program called ReLeaf Reno. The program, which launched on April 29, by Kelsey will fund the planting and maintenance of new trees in parks and public Fitzgerald areas around the City of Reno, and will encourage local residents to take personal responsibility for trees that grow on and around their properties.

“We’re going to be basically be making a call to action for citizens to adopt a tree,” Duerr said.

According to Duerr, a new tree inventory and management plan to be released by the Urban Forestry commission in May shows that Reno’s urban tree canopy has decreased since the time of the last inventory in 1998. Reasons for tree losses include drought, budget cuts during the recession, disease, bugs and old age.

“I think we’ve found that we’ve lost about five to 10 percent of our canopy over 18 years,” Duerr said. “That’s on public space. On private space, we’ve lost more.”

To combat tree losses, ReLeaf Reno will provide information to the public on how to care for trees, and recognize members of the community who are already taking care of city trees. Duerr has donated $10,000 from her council donation fund toward the ReLeaf Reno project, and hopes to match that money with contributions from other donors.

“In just one week since we’ve had the soft launch of this, we’ve gotten almost $10,000 in private contributions,” Duerr said. “My goal, and the Urban Forestry Commission’s goal, is to raise about $100,000. It wouldn’t just be used to buy trees, but also to install the trees—to get the hole dug, the tree in place, and to maintain it for its first year.”

Potential benefits of urban trees are many. Trees provide shade, reducing air temperature by blocking sunlight. They act as wind-breaks and help buffer noise. Trees improve air quality by absorbing CO2 and other gases, and releasing oxygen. They provide habitat for wildlife and have social benefits as well.

Two years before Ferguson, D. Brian Burghart of Reno began a census of people killed by police.

The Washington Post won a Pulitzer for creating a database of people killed by police. We were there first.

BRIAN BURGHART Earlier this month, the Washington Post was awarded the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for National Reporting for its project on police violence, “Fatal Force.” The Pulitzer Prize Board singled out the paper “For its revelatory initiative in creating and using a national database to illustrate how often and why the police shoot to kill and who the victims are most likely to be.”

The paper’s media reporter, Paul Farhi, provided details on the win in an April 18 write-up: “After covering several high-profile incidents involving the killings of civilians by police officers in 2014, Washington Post staff writer Wesley Lowery was surprised to discover that there were no official statistics about such fatalities. So Lowery pitched an idea to his editors: The newspaper, he suggested, should collect the information itself and analyze it for patterns in law enforcement.”

Except that’s not exactly how it went down. I know, because I was the one who suggested the idea to Lowery.

Back in 2012, I was the editor and publisher of the RN&R. After a fatal police shooting in Reno, I did some digging and discovered that no local, state or federal

Caught the piece you wrote for Gawker, and was hoping you might have a few minutes to chat sometime today about your work to catalog every police shooting.

agency accurately kept track of such shootings. So I decided to start a website and database, called Fatal Encounters, to collect and log data on police killings.

My colleagues, students from the University of Nevada, Reno, volunteers, and I began collecting data on deadly police violence and releasing it for free to anyone who wanted to use it for any reason.

Universities, artists, news media, activists, national politicians, police organizations and even the FBI used our data. But interest in the Fatal Encounters database exploded after Aug. 9, 2014, when Michael Brown, an unarmed black youth, was killed by a white police officer in Ferguson, Missouri.

Shortly after Brown was killed, I published a story on Gawker, “What I’ve learned from two years collecting data on police killings,” Aug. 22, 2014.

A couple of weeks later, I got an email from Wesley Lowery, at the time a Congressional reporter at the Washington Post, who had read the piece:

We talked on the phone the next day, and during the course of our interview, I told Lowery it was absurd that a grad student and editor at a four-person alternative newsweekly in Reno, Nevada, should be doing the job of the national press in his spare time, and I suggested the Post should pick it up. A few minutes after our chat, he got back to me, writing, “Thanks!

A few days later, Lowery published a story on the lack of statistics on police shootings. He was complimentary of Fatal Encounters’ work, writing that “prior to the Brown’s [sic] shooting, the only person attempting to keep track of the number of police shootings was D. Brian Burghart, the editor and publisher of the 29,000-circulation Reno News & Review, who launched his ‘Fatal Encounters’ project in 2012.”

When Lowery’s story ran, Fatal Encounters had already gathered more than a year’s worth of data, which was incorporated in numerous stories by the RN&R and other media such as TruthOut, CNN and CounterPunch. When I submitted the RN&R’s work to the Pulitzer Board for consideration for the 2015 Public Service Award, on January 25, 2015, we had more than 4,000 entries cataloging all deaths that happened during interactions with law enforcement in the United States, and the complete data for nine states going back to 2000. (By contrast, the Post’s Pulitzer Prize-winning “Fatal Force” series contained 990 shooting fatalities for the year 2015.) We’ve cataloged 1,143 gun homicides involving police during 2015

“LOST IN THE POST” continued from page 13 (and 153 officer-involved deaths by other violent means).

We’d been collecting data on 17 data points: Subject’s name, age, gender and race, image of the deceased, date of injury resulting in death, location of injury (address), location of death (zip code, city, county and state), agency responsible for death, cause of death, a brief description of the circumstances surrounding the death, official disposition of death (justified or other), link to news article or photo of official document, and symptoms of mental illness. The Post was collecting 13: Subject’s name, date, age, gender, race, city and state of death, manner of death, whether the subject was armed or fled, signs of mental illness, “threat level,” and whether the officer had a body camera.

“

Rich: “We were getting ready to publish for a Sunday and we got—and one of our reporters got an email from someone at the Guardian saying, ‘Hey, you should report on our new database we’re going to put out on Monday, So we basically launched at the same time, which was advantageous for both of us.’ ” Huffington also reported, “Rich didn’t mention the reporter by name, though sources told HuffPost that Lowery received the Guardian’s release.”

Timing isn’t everything, but it’s not nothing. Who publishes first matters, and the Post’s rush to beat the Guardian proves it.

The Post’s project deserves credit for its original insights; Fatal Encounters, for example, did not distinguish between armed

up by a national news outlet, and that’s exactly what the Post’s project did. Their project was easy to use and clear, and the paper’s reputation and readership all but guaranteed that the issue of police killings would get the attention it warranted.

But the paper gave no credit to Fatal Encounters or any other grassroots datacollection project in their submission to the Pulitzer Board.

When the Post submitted “Fatal Force” to the Pulitzer Board, they described the project thusly: “After a police officer shot and killed a black teenager in Ferguson, Mo., people began asking pointed questions about the use of deadly force by police. ‘How often do police shoot people? Who are the victims? Are the officers ever charged

outside sources anyway. I was grateful that the Post management had responded.

Still, I couldn’t help but register one final complaint that the Post, it seemed to me, had created an origin story after the fact: “After you guys launched, there seemed to be a strategy to talk down what FE had accomplished to make the Post’s project seem more innovative,” I wrote, by email, “Even the Medium story that misrepresented what was in our database appeared designed to undermine the work we’d done and are still doing.” While the Post’s oral history at the website Medium referred to Fatal Encounters only collecting information on five data points, we collected data on 17, and tracked deaths not only by gunshot, but by Tasers, vehicles and asphyxiation.

EXCEPT THAT’S NOT EXACTLY HOW IT WENT DOWN. I KNOW,

Fatal Encounters itself wasn’t the first attempt to catalog shootings by police. The October 22 Coalition to Stop Police Brutality, Repression and the Criminalization of a Generation with its Stolen Lives Project predated the mass adoption of the internet, so it’s primarily a list, not a database. Operation Ghetto Storm, written by Arlene Eisen in 2012, advanced the issue of a racial imbalance in the killing of Americans by police. Even Killed By Police, on Facebook, started two years before the Post’s project.

Of course, neither Fatal Encounters nor Killed by Police won the 2016 Pulitzer. We didn’t even apply. After all, the Washington Post and the Guardian’s project “The Counted” had used Fatal Encounters’ data to inform their projects and cited that they did, and going up against giant news organizations with resources as large as those at the Guardian and the Post felt like an exercise in hubris. At any rate, money was tight, and the $50 entry fee seemed like a luxury. The costs for the first two years of Fatal Encounters came out of my own pocket.

Plus, the competition for Pulitzers sometimes comes down to which category a paper is smart enough to enter itself in. As the Huffington Post reported, the Guardian missed out on the prize because it entered the Explanatory Reporting and Public Service category, where the Washington Post entered the National Reporting category. The Washington Post was savvy about timing as well—Guardian’s project was set to publish on June 1, 2015, so the Post went live with their project on the night of May 30.

vs. unarmed victims, and the Post did. But in other areas, the Post makes unearned claims to have been the first to report what they were not. For example, in the same write-up from April 18, Farhi writes: “The data showed, for example, that about one-quarter of those fatally shot had a history of mental illness; that most of those killed were white men (although unarmed African Americans were at vastly higher risk of being shot after routine traffic stops than any other group); and that 55 officers involved in fatal shootings in 2015 had previously been involved in a deadly incident while on duty.”

But TruthOut, on March 10, 2015, reported Fatal Encounters’s findings that up to 30 percent of people killed by police were mentally ill, months before the Post ran its story on the topic. Alternet’s Don Hazen reported it again on April 7, 2015.

The Reno News & Review published stories that included the information in early 2014. Samuel Sinyangwe, data scientist for #BlackLivesMatter and Campaign Zero, launched MappingPoliceViolence. org using race-related data collected by Fatal Encounters months before the Post launched their project.

(The Post’s data can be compared with Fatal Encounters’s relatively easily at Numeracy, which is an independent enterprise that builds tools that make it easier to work with, understand and share complex data.)

The Washington Post and its editors and reporters are heroes of mine, and the Watergate reporting inspired me to get into journalism in the first place.

More importantly, Fatal Encounters was open to the public, and we’d designed it intending and hoping that the data would reach a wider audience by being picked

with a crime?’ None of those questions could be answered when Michael Brown died in August 2014 because police are not required to report fatal shootings to the FBI. “Without that data, it was impossible to say whether Brown’s death fit a pattern. It was impossible to hold police to account.

So the Washington Post launched an unprecedented effort to tally every fatal shooting by an on-duty officer in 2015.”

(Emphasis added.)

This line, from the same letter, signed by executive editor Martin Baron—yes, the Spotlight guy—expressed the Post’s regard for the impact of its own work quite well: “The [FBI’s] new approach will mirror The Post’s, capturing shootings and other violent incidents in real time and logging many of the same details.” Yet, the Post’s database only contains information about fatal shootings. Fatal Encounters’ and the Guardian’s were the ones that contained “other violent incidents,” such as deaths during high-speed chases or fatalities by Taser.

So I fired off an email to Wesley Lowery, Martin Baron, Paul Farhi and managing editor Cameron Barr congratulating them on their Pulitzer, but complaining that I didn’t think they’d given Fatal Encounters the credit we were due.

Barr graciously responded. He wrote that the Post had given us credit several times, and that they had gathered their own data, but, “As a backstop, we periodically checked your site and Killed by Police, which is why we credited the two organizations.”

Fine, even though no credit was mentioned in their Pulitzer application—it wouldn’t have been traditional to cite

I was content with my knowledge that Fatal Encounters was the first national open-data, crowd-sourced and journalistvetted database, and that its data was making an impact. We’re now at 25 complete states, complete national data for three years, more than 12,670 records, and we’re growing at the rate of 200 records a week. We’re 10 times larger and far more detailed than the Post on each record.

Then Wesley Lowery appeared on the PBS News Hour with Judy Woodruff on April 19. PBS’s description of his appearance read: “No one kept track of police shootings until this Pulitzer-winning project.”

Perhaps Lowery meant to say that no government body kept accurate track, but he went on to describe the origin of the project: “Smart editors asked an obvious question, which is true, ‘We should be able to provide some clarity to this debate, and it turned out that we could because no one was keeping track at the national level or even at the state levels. No one knew exactly how many people were being killed by police’” and “the sheer number did surprise us, right, the fact that it was almost a thousand over the course of the year and that very many of them—even in cases someone was armed or unarmed— you had issues of mental illness you had people how had knives instead of guns, cases where it seemed that perhaps something could have been done to prevent this person from being killed” and “previously, this wasn’t out there.”

Unless he was referring to me or one of my colleagues at the RN&R as the smart editor, Lowery and the Post described something as unprecedented that wasn’t.

PBS also tweeted a link to the segment using similar language, and a minor fracas

erupted between Lowery and Veronika Cernadas, who is, according to her Twitter bio, the Media Relations Manager for the Guardian: In fairness to Lowery, he is not responsible for how PBS described the segment on the air, on YouTube, on Twitter, or anywhere else, and he tweeted his own response to PBS: “Our efforts built on great work by others, and complimented [sic] by other excellent projects on police violence last year.”

The thing is, the Pulitzer citation specifically said they were awarding the Post for creating an unprecedented database: “For its revelatory initiative in creating and using a national database to illustrate how often and why the police shoot to kill and who the victims are most likely to be.” But it was not the Washington Post’s “Fatal Force” project that proved that the federal government had been misrepresenting the number of people who were killed by law enforcement for decades. It was Fatal Encounters and Killed

By Police that took the initiative and proved that instead of 400 people a year, it was closer to 1,200.

This Pulitzer Prize heralds the arrival of the era of data journalism in earnest, and the reception of the Post’s project will set the tone for data-driven investigations for years to come. It shouldn’t matter who collected data on police killings first, but it does. Claiming to be first when it was not,

claiming not to know that other databases existed for years, and claiming to be comprehensive when it was not is—quite frankly—beneath the Washington Post.

Newspapers and organizations like Fatal Encounters that have far fewer resources than the Washington Post collect data and publicize it at great cost. Independent media and independent data collection and publication are part of the future of data journalism, and allowing legacy media to take credit for our achievements undermines our ability to sustain our own efforts, which depend on charitable dollars and public support.

The Post did something we didn’t: its analysis and packaging of police-killing data were original, and outstripped what Fatal Encounters could ever have done given the resources available to us. But the idea of keeping track wasn’t new, and the Post newsroom was not the only one to undertake the work of assembling a massive data set that has already begun to change policing in this country for the better. We may have been the scrappiest database of deadly police violence the Washington Post had ever heard of, but we existed before the Post’s did, and they had heard of us. Two dozen people pack into Kyle Isacksen’s living room. They’re there in response to the homesteader’s latest email—a bat signal for the deep green community to come together for a special project. It’s a compost pile for Reno Sculpture Fest that should be “inspiring and easy to build.” Someone suggests a labyrinth.

Another thinks a simple pile framed by palettes makes the most sense. Everyone agrees that informational text is a must.

Isacksen and his wife, Katy, started their urban homestead, the Be The Change Project, with their two sons nearly five years ago.

the economic poverty bracket, and just south of Hug High School on the east side of Reno—in the middle of the city. The family relies on their half acre plot to grow their own vegetables and raise small livestock for much of their food.

Since moving in, the Isacksens have started something of a movement on their block as several neighbors have followed their lead, letting lawns turn brown, planting food forests in their yards, and participating in a gift economy.

It’s a process Isacksen describes as “just a change in habit.”

Over the years, the Isacksens have spearheaded a number of community projects, including an RTC-sponsored mural, a neighborhood

Their latest project, Reno Rot Riders, is arguably the most ambitious. It’s a compost collection service powered by Isacksen’s own bike and trailer. Although he’s currently the only rot rider of Reno Rot Riders, the project is named for growth.

“We’d love to have scores of riders eventually, going out every day, gathering up this food waste, bringing it short distances to these composts or compost sites where they’re made into compost and enriching the soil,” he said.

Even on his own, Isacksen has made a small dent in diverting restaurant waste from landfills.

He makes pick-ups at five downtown locations each week, hauling three bins at a time in his custom-built trailer. Over the last seven months, he estimates that he has clocked almost 500 miles and diverted 15,000 pounds of food from the dump.

The precedent for success with bikepowered compost collection is well documented. Pedal pushers make their rounds all over the country—from one-person operations like Resoil Sacramento to longtime multimember cooperatives like Pedal People in Amherst, Massachusetts. Compost Pedallers of Austin, Texas, has made such an impact on their region—diverting 500,000 pounds of waste from landfills—that they are currently partnering with the city to develop new waste management policies.

On the right footprint Isacksen is going with a simple design for the sculpture. With the help of a few friends and a neighbor’s driveway for staging, the group builds four bins, each progressively smaller than the next to illustrate different stages of decomposition—from raw material to finished

compost. The final bin measures one cubic foot, a 75 percent reduction in size from the original pile. Isacksen seals the wood with linseed oil and lines each bin with chickenwire.

So far, the biggest challenge for Reno Rot Riders is the question of where to deliver compost materials. Although Isacksen speculates that the operation will eventually establish “dozens of compost locations all around the city,” there’s not yet a huge market for the flipside of food waste pickup.

But maybe there should be. Compost makes up for what Nevada soils lack, namely humus.

Though most soils contain 5 percent organic matter, Nevada soils only have 1 percent, a number that—when coupled with a lack of moisture and concentration of nutrients at the top of the soil profile—often results in soil that is lost to wind and water erosion.

That’s where home- and city-wide composting can make a difference. Though broad-scale land management practices yield bigger results on the vast swaths of rangelands that cover the state, smaller-scale action in high impact areas is equally important.

Perhaps the most significant impact of compost production in populated areas is climate impact through waste diversion. According to the EPA, food and yard waste account for 24 percent of garbage that ends up in national landfills. In Northern Nevada, 5 million pounds of garbage is hauled to the Lockwood Regional Landfill every day. And once food waste goes to the dump, it is essentially sealed off from oxygen, making an anaerobic environment that leads to methane—a greenhouse gas 23 times more potent than carbon dioxide.

That’s a lot to offset. But at least some people are trying. Commercial operations like Full Circle Compost and RT Donovan divert a combined total of 65 million pounds of organic

material from landfills each year. That balances out 13 days of waste collection. So it’s a start.

Cody Witt of Full Circle Compost also believes public awareness is growing.

“There’s a lot of people now who are taking food as one of their number one issues—where it comes from, how it’s grown,” said Witt in a recent phone interview. “And if they’re not happy with it, they’re doing it themselves, so compost is growing on a backyard scale too.”

Clinging to scraps A few people gather to work on some finishing details of the sculpture, namely, sanding the wood and painting a signpost that will sit next to the bins. Conversation drifts back and forth between the art project and politics, with politics winning out for most of the work session.

Finally, Isacksen changes the subject. “Can we talk about compost or something?”

The politics of compost doesn’t seem like a thing, but it is—especially if you live in a state where all recycling and compost mandates are voluntary. While California has strict recycling regulations currently in place as well as a mandate to recycle 75 percent of all garbage by 2020, Nevada holds back on waste regulation.

Reno’s franchise agreement with Waste Management makes things even trickier as the company holds exclusive hauling rights for waste in the city.

According to Councilwoman Jenny Brekhus, Isacksen’s operation has the OK from the city and Waste Management. Although there is room for positive interpretation, there are still concerns from the composting community that organic waste movers will get priced out by a company that is only acting in its best financial interest.

Already, this has had an impact on local composters. In 2011, Full Circle Compost had “over 10 garbage trucks a week” coming in from Reno. Now 80 percent of its green waste comes from California and Witt is looking to the state to do the right thing.

“It comes down to Nevada,” said Witt.

“The number one thing that needs to be changed is the total state regulation of increasing waste diversion.”

Talk of regulation and mandates in a state with a broad libertarian streak is never going to be popular—but it may be the case that the act of building a compost pile in the backyard is the most freedom-loving action anyone can take.

Just ask Reno Rot Riders.

In a few days, the compost sculpture will be trucked out to South Virginia St. for Reno Sculpture Fest. It will be on display from May 6-8. After the festival is over, the bins will be converted into rabbit hutches for Isacksen’s homestead. Ω

King Lear (John Blomberg) gathers together his three daughters.

Age is taking its toll, and he’s ready to turn over his kingdom—but who among them is most deserving?

“Who loves me the most?” he asks his three daughters.

His eldest, Goneril (Heather Willson-Eaton), can play this game.

She and her husband, the Duke of Albany (Evan Heiser), are rewarded for their excessive flattery with a large parcel of land.

Daughter number two, Regan (Ashley Marie James), is equal to the task, and Lear, satisfied with her answer, awards Regan and her husband, the Duke of Cornwall (Dirk Miller), a piece of land equally lovely.

Now Lear turns to his youngest, Cordelia (Annakarina De La Torre-Fennell), expecting a similar declaration. But Cordelia won’t play this sick game. She loves her father in accordance with their bond, no more or less.

Pissed, Lear gives her nothing.

She leaves the kingdom emptyhanded, an enemy to her father and sisters, and marries the King of France (Cody Hamilton).

Left to their own devices, Goneril and Regan denigrate their father and strip him of any remaining power. Lear is cast out, left to wander the heath in a storm with only his fool (Scott Rankin) for

company.

As if that weren’t messed up enough, we also have the Earl of Gloucester (Jon Lutz). He has two sons, Edgar (Gregory Klino), a fine, upstanding man, and Edmund (Robert Zellers), Gloucester’s bastard son who holds none of the rank or respect of his brother. Edmund concocts a plot to take what he feels is rightfully his. He convinces Gloucester that Edgar intends him harm and must be ejected from the kingdom, then seduces both Goneril and Regan in a play for power.

Gloucester falls victim to an act of violence that’ll have you squirming in your seat, then is thrown out on his ass to join Lear in the storm.

Like any good Shakespearean tragedy, life sucks, and just when you think things must start looking up, they get worse. Also, there’s a lot of dying. It all goes to show that greed— for power, for money, for love—leads to misery, and blindness—literal or figurative—to madness. It’s a supremely disturbing story, executed beautifully by the GLM cast.

Director Joe Atack has revised this work as the life of Ivan the Terrible, the 16th century Russian tsar whose life had surprising parallels to King Lear’s: madness and paranoia, greedy children, a propensity to tantrums.

The setting is a stark, wintry Russia.

The authentic costumes and jewelry are stunning in their beauty and ornateness.

Atack’s revision also plays a bit with the casting. Lear’s trusted adviser, the Earl of Kent, is now Lady Kent, played by Kate Atack. This change gives new perspective to the story and Kent’s role in Lear’s life.

The performances are solid across the board, from Blomberg’s convincing portrayal of Lear, a man whose miseries age him before our eyes to Willson-Eaton and James as the beguilingly evil Goneril and Regan, and from Atack as Lear’s funny and comforting only friend to Zellers, who is surprisingly funny as the bastard Edmund, even as he plots his misdeeds.

The unique staging immerses viewers in the action. I reluctantly had to sit up front on a sold-out opening night, but having done it, I’d now recommend it. King Lear is a haunting journey into madness and evil, and you’ll want to see every miserable moment up close. Ω

In many east Asian cultures, the craters and seas of the moon are interpreted as the image of a rabbit. Origin by Todd South stories of this lunar leporid generally involve a theme of community, respect and self-sacrifice. Dining is done family-style, with long tables of about 12 seats each and a total capacity of 80. We waited for roughly 30 minutes to be seated, and the staff tell me they served a record crowd of over 200 that evening. The aromas coming from the dining room were so enticing we didn’t mind the wait a bit, and the volunteer staff did a bang-up job keeping things friendly and feeling unrushed, all while moving folks through at a decent pace.

Each month a different theme is chosen, often with a guest chef creating the menu. April’s theme was “Ooh La La Paris in the Spring,” featuring some classic French dishes, each with a little twist showcasing the chef’s creativity.

First course was a canapé plate of crostini with toasted gruyere, a jam of caramelized onion and rosemary,

garnished with fresh chives and chive blossoms. The appearance and flavor was akin to a deconstructed French onion soup, with a nice touch of garden freshness.

There were two entrées to choose from—one vegan, one not—both served with an arugula salad dressed in lemon and fennel seed vinaigrette.

By itself, the salad was a star on the plate, the peppery flavor of arugula pairing perfectly with the seasoned, slightly tart dressing. Layered ratatouille filled the vegan role, with green zucchini, yellow squash and roma tomatoes. A thick, pureed sauce made from the vegetable ends, eggplant, red bell pepper, onion, lemon, rosemary, and oil perfectly bound it all together. Definitely one of the most flavorful squash-based dishes I’ve been served.

As if that wasn’t enough, the chef’s take on coq au vin started with chicken thighs marinated in pinot noir, seared in bacon fat, then braised in a blend of wine and housemade veggie stock. Combined with roasted red potatoes and turnips—and carrots sauteed in butter and cardamom—the resulting flavor profile was very well developed, subtle and delicious.

Beverages included ice water, tea, coffee and a spritzer that appeared to be a blend of Concord grape juice and seltzer water. The spritzer didn’t really work for me—reminding me of kiddie coolers my parents used to order for us tykes—but the coffee was quite good, very robust and a perfect pairing with dessert. Provided by a local bakery, dessert was a delicate little lemon and raspberry tartlet served a la mode. It featured a nice balance of tart and sweet, with a single whole raspberry right in the center. A perfect end to a great meal.

I found the pay-what-you-can concept a refreshing idea, allowing folks from all walks of life to enjoy a great meal together. Both while waiting to be seated and during the meal, it was hard not to connect and chat with perfect strangers enjoying the meal and the community vibe together. The next dinner is on May 21, although the theme and chef are yet to be announced. The chef who prepared our delicious meal turns out to be a semi-amateur with a passion for cooking, and Moon Rabbit Cafe is seeking new chefs to create future dinners. Ω

Deadliest cat Keanu After a few years on their TV show, the comedy duo Key and Peele come to the big screen with Keanu, a lively kidnapped cat comedy with a high body count.

Part John Wick and part Adventures in Babysitting, the film gives us KeeganMichael Key and Jordan Peele as Clarence and Rell, a couple of wimpy guys trying to by get a beloved kitten back from some hardcore Bob Grimm gangsters. In order to do so, they masquerade as Shark Tank and Tectonic, two badasses bgr i mm@ newsr evie w.c om from Allentown who will end your life if you don’t give them their cat back.

That cat first escapes from a drug den when two killers (also played by Key and Peele) murder his owner. He winds up at the doorstep of newly dumped Rell, who gloms onto him as his feline savior. The cat is then kidnapped and winds up back in the hands of gangsters, requiring Rell and Clarence to swing into action.

The title character is, of course, the cat, who has to be the cutest kitten anybody has ever put in a movie. Clad in a doo-rag and jewelry, the multiple cats recruited for the part make this film an absolute necessity for cat lovers, even if you hate Key and Peele.

The felines steal every scene they are in.

The movie isn’t the most original piece of work this year. Fish-out-of-water scenarios are a dime a dozen, and much of the humor—Clarence’s obsession with George Michael, Rell’s trouble with women—is based on stuff we’ve seen before.

That said, Key and Peele have a knack for taking familiar scenarios and playing them out to nutty, funny extremes. For example: One of Clarence’s gangsta associates, after a long George Michael listening session, gets a “George Michael is OG” tattoo on his torso.

It’s funnier than it sounds.

One of the great things about their comedy is their seemingly innocent slant, followed by large doses of nastiness. Not to give too much away, but the film has a rather shocking violence factor, and it’s quite surprising given how innocuous it seems at times. This is by no means a complaint. The film’s best moments are its most shocking ones.

Method Man contributes nicely as Cheddar, the criminal holding Keanu and unwilling to give him up without significant, murderous favors in return.

Jason Mitchell, fresh off his stint in Straight Outta Compton, gets big laughs as Bud, one of Cheddar’s henchmen. Tiffany Haddish scores points as Hi-C, perhaps the most badass person in the movie. Her violent tendencies really come to life during a cameo by a famous comedic actress. (I won’t give away the name.)

Will Forte shows up as Rell’s next-door neighbor and pot dealer. Again, the film is dealing in well-worn territory here, with Forte’s character playing a white guy trying to be black. Credit Forte with making some old shtick pretty funny in this movie.

Key and Peele have been kicking around in supporting roles in movies over the last decade or so, but this is the first time they’ve really been able to take the spotlight on the big screen. While it’s not a rousing success, they definitely show promise as a big screen duo.

In John Wick, Keanu Reeves infiltrated the Russian mob after somebody messed with his dog. In Keanu, Key and Peele infiltrate a drug ring to save a cat. The short lesson here is that you don’t mess with a man’s dog or cat.

As good as Key and Peele are in this film, the real star is Keanu and the cats that played him. Also, huge props to the cat wrangler and whoever else managed to pull the performances out of these particular kitties. You’ll believe a kitten can evade rapid gunfire. Ω

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice

Director Zack Snyder has effectively knocked the wind out of two great comic book heroes. This film is a crime to every geek who has ever picked up a graphic novel. Hell, it’s also a crime afflicted upon hardcore Ben Affleck fans. Affleck could be a fine Batman.

Actually, he could be a great Batman. But, like George Clooney before him, he winds up looking quite ridiculous running around in a messy movie in which his character simply doesn’t fit. A nice effort by Affleck to portray a nuanced, older, somewhat weary Bruce Wayne—not to mention a badass suit—is utterly wasted. As for Henry Cavill’s Superman, I’m longing for those short-lived days of Brandon Routh as Kal-el. While it isn’t entirely his fault, Cavill’s Supes is officially a dud. A sequel to the dreary Man of Steel, also directed by Snyder, Batman v Superman is a soulless step in the wrong direction. Snyder, who made a great graphic novel movie with Watchmen, has just completely lost the ability to put together a cohesive, exciting movie.

Everybody Wants Some!!

Writer-director Richard Linklater makes a sort of companion piece to his breakthrough film Dazed and Confused with mixed results. This time out, he gives us a crew of young baseball players showing up for college a few days before classes and partying in various settings—a disco, a honkytonk, a punk bar—because it’s 1980, and things are all mixed up. The movie is full of bad wigs, bad mustaches, typical song choices (“My Sharona,” “Rapper’s Delight,” “Bad Girls”) and ugly ’70s cars. What it isn’t full of are the type of memorable characters that made Dazed such a delight. Blake Jenner (Glee) plays the film’s main protagonist, Jake, a baseball pitcher who has his eye on an art major (Zoey Deutch). Their little courtship is cute, but most of the movie isn’t as clever as it thinks it is. The cast of mostly unknowns deliver their lines like they are raining manna from their mouths, but none of it is all that funny or intelligent. For a film about baseball players, it spends very little time on the baseball field, and the ritual this team performs at the end of practice couldn’t possibly be done without killing somebody. It’s almost like Linklater is trying to make up for his garbage remake of The Bad News Bears by giving us a more mature baseball film, but this one feels too scattered.

Eye in the Sky

A drone pilot (Aaron Paul) has a missile shot all lined up and is about to pull the trigger on a houseful of terrorists when a little girl parks herself within the blast zone to sell some bread. This is just one of the dilemmas brilliantly depicted in writer-director Gavin Hood’s tense thriller about drone warfare and the political ramifications of collateral damage.

Helen Mirren is superb as Colonel Katherine Powell, determined to take out multiple targets on Great Britain’s terrorist list, but needing to check the legalities of all her strategies before she can make a single move. In his last live action screen appearance, Alan Rickman is terrific as Lt. General Frank Benson, drolly responding to the bureaucracy that’s keeping him from doing his job. Paul brings his best big screen acting yet to the role of Steve Watts, a drone commander torn between killing an innocent child or preventing potential scores from being killed in a terrorist bombing. Phoebe Fox gives a breakthrough performance as Carrie Gershon, drone co-commander.

The Huntsman: Winter’s War

Four years ago, when Snow White and the Huntsman came out, Kristen Stewart was all the rage. The film made lots of money, and it looked like the former Bella had a new franchise on her hands. Not so fast. Kristen, in a moment of shameful and delicious wickedness, made out in public—well, in front of somebody’s unauthorized camera, anyway—with that film’s married director, much to the chagrin of then boyfriend Robert Pattinson and, consequently, her fan base.

Plans for a sequel starring her were scrapped, and a whole new plan featuring her costar and budding movie giant Chris Hemsworth (Thor!) were hatched. What producers didn’t realize at the time is that Hemsworth basically sucks whenever he’s doing anything other than playing Thor. Blackhat, In the Heart of the Sea, Vacation, and now this mighty slice of hell are proof of that. While Snow White was no creative

party, it was a tolerable misfire. This is a starstudded absolute mess. It’s a worthless slog of a sequel/prequel. Charlize Theron returns as the evil Ravenna, with Emily Blunt and Jessica Chastain joining the sad party. And, of course, you have Thor on hand as the Huntsman, the most useless, banal role this guy has taken on in his mostly useless and banal career.

Tale of Tales

Jon Favreau’s delightful and funny take on the Rudyard Kipling’s tale of a boy raised by wolves is a winner. A young boy raised in the jungle is pursued by a pissed off tiger (Idris Elba) who had his face burned by a human when he was young. When plans to leave for a human village are rudely interrupted, Mowgli (newcomer Neel Sethi) winds up staying in the jungle longer than he planned, and he must keep wearing the same pair of red baggy shorts. He encounters Kaa (Scarlett Johansson), an evil temptress snake, and other perils while building a special friendship with a big bear. And, as far as I could see, he never stops to wash those red shorts. A swim in the river doesn’t count. You need detergent. Bill Murray is, indeed, a masterstroke of vocal casting as Baloo, the big bear who befriends Mowgli on his extended jungle trek. Casting Christopher Walken as King Louie, the Kongsized master of all apes in the jungle, actually tops the Murray casting feat. It gives Favreau’s film an opportunity to become truly weird, very funny, and even a little scary. The highlight comes when Walken’s King Louie, portrayed with undertones of Brando’s Colonel Kurtz, suddenly busts out “I Wanna Be Like You.” Walken is perfect for the song and perfect for the character, making the scene an instant classic. The special effects are topnotch.

Don Cheadle makes an impressive directorial debut with this crazy biopic that’s mostly fiction but all fun. Cheadle plays jazz trumpeter Miles Davis, hibernating from public life in the late ’70s when a Rolling Stone reporter (Ewan McGregor) shows up at his door looking for a comeback story. The film then turns part comedy thriller as Davis tries to track down a missing tape from his latest sessions, something that never really happened.

It’s all just an excuse to use Miles Davis in a goofy story, and somehow it all works. Cheadle is awesome as Davis, even doing some impressive trumpet miming to boot. (Cheadle, like Ethan Hawke in the recent Chet Baker biopic Born to Be Blue, learned how to play trumpet for the part.) The film switches between Miles in the ’70s and Miles in the ’60s dealing with relationship struggles. No, the movie doesn’t really focus much on the actual music. It’s more of a weird trip inspired by the music. Michael Stuhlbarg is good as a shady record producer, and McGregor has a lot of fun as the shifty reporter who will do anything for a scoop.

Cheadle has made a good looking and sounding movie to go with his strong performance. It’s not going to win any awards for accuracy, but it’s a fun movie with a Cheadle performance well worth any music lover’s time.

This is one oddball movie. It sort of comes off like David Lynch’s Princess Bride. Italian director Matteo Garrone (Gomorrah, Reality) adapts three fairy tales and sort of mixes them together, creating a semiconsistent and relatively cohesive narrative.

In one of the stories, John C. Reilly plays a king—he actually looks like the Burger King— who must stalk a sea monster and get its heart so that his queen (Salma Hayek) can devour it and become pregnant. In another, Toby Jones plays another king who becomes fascinated with a flea, feeding it blood and steak until it grows to the size of a large sow. In yet another, Vincent Cassel is a king who falls in love with the voice of what he thinks is a fair maiden, but it turns out to be an old lady. All of these characters share the same universe. There are times when it becomes a little lifeless, but the visuals are always remarkable, and some of the performances (especially Hayek and Jones) are pretty great. Garrone knows how to put a film together on the visual side. He can use a little tightening up with the verbal part.

Still, the overall experience is good, albeit very bizarre, and lovers of decent fantasy films should indulge. (Available for rent on iTunes, Amazon.com and On Demand during a limited theatrical release.)

Still, he went for it. And the band continued playing together as often as possible, relying on big summer events like Hot August Nights to afford them the opportunity. In 2009, RN&R readers voted the Jason King Band’s album Blue Skies & Black Shoes the best “local band CD.” In the end, having to book solo gigs during the economic downturn helped Roxas realize that—with a little flexibility—he could turn music into a sustainable career. Six years ago, he left his position as a youth counselor at the Jan Evans Juvenile Justice Center and began performing full time.

“It’s kind of like owning your own business,” Roxas said. “You’ve got to hustle. Sometimes I’ll play two or three times in one day. If I can pack in like 15 shows in a week or something, I’m like ‘Yeah, sure.

I’ll do it.”

With that many shows on the docket, Roxas has learned to embrace the experience of playing venues both large and small. On weekday evenings, it’s not unusual to hear the distinctive combination of his smoky voice and the velvety, melodic blues of his guitar emanating from a quiet casino bar. It’s a curiously pleasant experience to hear him play to a mostly empty room— the hush between notes acting as a third instrument in his one-man show. But Roxas’ feelings on the matter are mostly pragmatic.

“In my mind I’m like, ‘You know what? If I wasn’t playing tonight, I’d be in the living room doing the same thing,’” he said.

Today, 44-year-old Roxas remains a mainstay in the Reno music scene, having witnessed the coming and going of everything from venues to bands to trends. Now more than ever, he’s hopeful for the future of local music.

“If you look at the contemporary history of the past 40 years, there’s always an ebb and flow when it comes to live music and DJing and stuff,” Roxas said. “The casinos had a big influence on that kind of stuff. It kind of stifled a lot of the local guys. Actually, it worked one of two ways. It either killed them, or it made them really good—they wanted to get that good. Now you have live music venues that have nothing to do with casinos. It’s awesome.” Ω

“It’s funny, because a lot of my friends who went the career path are hitting the point where they’re getting ready to retire, and they’re like, ‘Hey, we’re going to start a band,’ and I’m like, ‘OK, now you’ve got an awesome retirement, and you’ve got all this stuff, and I’m like uhhh’ … I am very happy actually,” he added with a shrug and a laugh.

Roxas started the Jason King Band, a bluesy rock ’n’ roll outfit, shortly after college. The name, he explained, was suggested by a friend who anticipated that while band members might come and go, Roxas would remain a constant in the music scene. It was an accurate prediction. Over the years, there have been many iterations of the Jason King Band, but, regardless of the roster, Roxas never stopped booking gigs—even when the recession often found him in the position of having to play solo or not at all.

“I was getting a lot of people going, ‘Hey, listen, we love you. We love your band, but we don’t have the money to pay the band. How much just for you?’”

Roxas said. “I love the guys, and to a certain degree—and I know that they have full-time jobs and

Reno Sculpture Festival

arge sculptures by more than 30 artists will decorate downtown Reno as part of the second annual festival, which kicks off at the Reno ReTRAC Plaza on Friday, May 6, with an opening celebration at 4 p.m. The three-day event, which runs through Sunday, May 8, will feature an art walk, interactive art installations, vendors, food trucks, wellness and activity gardens, kids’ activities, live music on three stages and other entertainment at the downtown plaza at 301 S. Virginia St., as well as at surrounding streets in downtown Reno. Admission is free for daytime events. There will be yoga sessions starting as early as 9 a.m. on

All in a day’s jerk I’m a happily married 30-year-old woman. A co-worker pointed out a senior trainer at work constantly sneaking lustful glances at me. I was later assigned to his section. We quickly became close friends and he began mentoring me. He’s married, too, with two children, so though we were extremely flirtatious, nothing inappropriate ever happened, and I told my husband about him.

Recently, there were rumors that this man and I were hooking up. He freaked, saying he could lose everything and cut off our mentorship and our friendship. This was a real slap in the face, as was learning that he’d never told his wife about me. Should I confront him about how bad it feels to be cut off by him?

Granted, that isn’t what happened here. But you don’t have to have the fun to have the fallout, which is why some execs now avoid having closed-door meetings with opposite-sex co-workers. We all hope for life-changing experiences, but it’s best if they aren’t getting fired, going through a bitter divorce and having the ex-wife drop off the kids on alternating weekends: “OK, boys, time to put down the Xbox and go visit your dad at the homeless shelter!”

And no, he never announced to his wife, “Hey, honey, I’m mentoring this total hotbody. There’s a rumor that we’re hooking up. Believe me, I wish we were …” Of course, he wouldn’t say that, but he probably senses what psychologist Paul Ekman has found—that we tend to “leak” what we’re really feeling through facial expressions and body language (especially if these include Gollum-like panting and slobbering: “Must. Have. The. Precious.”)

You probably understand this intellectually. But the sting from being socially amputated comes out of what psychologist Donna Hicks, an international conflict resolution specialist, deems a “dignity violation.” Hicks describes dignity as “an internal state of peace” we feel from being treated as if we have value and our feelings matter. Because we evolved as a cooperative species and reputation was essential to our remaining in our ancestral band, we react to threats to our dignity as we would threats to our survival.

You patch up your dignity not by marching around all butthurt while waiting for him to repair it but by calmly taking the initiative. Tell him that you miss having him as a friend and mentor—but that you understand.

Counterintuitively, you should find that being the bigger one makes you feel better. Acting like the antithesis of the scorned work wife should help him ease up, too. Though it’s unlikely that things will go back to how they were, he should at least stop treating you like poison ivy in career separates.

Trading what’s-his-faces I’m a 34-year-old woman who’s been in a year-long relationship with a wonderful man. I’ve caught myself several times almost calling him by my ex’s name.

Surely, this means something, but what? I loathe my ex and regret spending seven long years with him. Still, could I have unresolved feelings for him?

It’s like when you pour orange juice on your cereal instead of milk, which surely only happens because you’ve been having sex dreams about fruit salad.

If your near name slips are a sign of anything, it’s probably that you need a snack and a nap. Your brain is an energy hog, so it likes to cut corners where it can, especially when you’re tired. Basically, like your web browser, it’s big on autofill. In researcher-speak, this means it makes “retrieval errors”—reaching into the right file drawer but just grabbing any old name and then going, “Yeah, whatever … good enough.”

Research by psychological anthropologist Alan Page Fiske finds that the biggest predictors for name swapping are the same “mode of relationship”—like here, where both names are from the boyfriend zone —and being “of the same gender.” Boringly reassuring, I hope. There’s also a boringly simple fix from memory researcher David Balota—asking and answering the question “What is my current boyfriend’s name?” using “spaced retrieval.” This means setting a timer for, say, 15 seconds and then 45 seconds and then two minutes so you’re recalling the name on demand (as opposed to just reciting it over and over again).

You might also try to see these near errors as a sign of the rich tapestry of our bustling modern lives, or some bullshit like that. At least that’s what I tried to tell myself last week when I got off the phone with “Love you!” and heard back, “Um, yes, ma’am. Thank you for choosing AT&T.” Ω

for two years. I audition pretty regularly for things that I get submitted to, just kind of randomly, just things where I don’t know anybody involved. But this one, a coach I had at UCB told the creators, John Altschuler and Dave Krinsky, who also created Silicon Valley—apparently they had been casting this role and had tough luck, so they asked him if he knew anybody, and he submitted me. And I auditioned three times.

A first time, a callback, and then a test. …

At the audition, you read the scenes. At the callback, you read them again, but there’s more people there. But the test is when they take three to five people—finalists, sort of—and they invite all the network people.

So at this one, there were TV Land execs— like people-on-their-smart-phones—sitting in the room, and George Lopez was there for that one. But the crazy thing about the test is that before you even go, in between the callback and the test, you have to sign a contract for seven years. It dictates how much you’ll make for seven years if the show goes, and you can’t do other roles on other TV shows, except for little ones, and your dressing room has to be just as a big as everyone else’s dressing room, and your name is just as big of a font in the credits as everyone else’s. So, you have to sign all that before you even walk in the room, which is crazy. … This one happened so fast. It happened basically, like over the course of a week. I was supposed to be out of town, and I kept changing my flight, thinking, I’ll just go to this one audition, and then I’ll catch my flight. And then, I’ll just go to this callback and change the flight. Then, I’ll just do the test and change my flight. And then, I couldn’t go on the trip, but I got the part. Ω

Hayley Huntley Lopez is a new show on TV Land in which comedian and actor George Lopez plays a fictionalized version of himself. Reno native Hayley Huntley, who graduated from Reno High School in 2007, plays Olivia “Olly” Michaels, Lopez’s manager. The show airs on TV Land every Wednesday at 10 p.m. It can also be found on TVLand.com.

How long have you been down in L.A.?

I went to college here from 2007 to 2011.

I went to [the University of Southern California]. I did not study theater, but I did almost exclusively theater extracurriculars, and I was in a college improv troupe, and that was kind of my first moment in comedy. But for 2012, I moved home to Reno and did plays at Reno Little Theater.

What plays?

I did two plays. I did one called Private Lives, and I did Death of a Salesman, and I also just pitched in generally everywhere, and got a glimpse of a very happy life I could lead doing theater in Reno. And then, at the last minute, I moved back to L.A. to try auditioning. That was in 2013. I moved to L.A. again to try this whole thing as a career, which kind of freaked me out before, because I had a preconception of an L.A. actor as opposed to a small-town theater actor—which is a prototype I like very much. I was afraid to have an agent,

and I thought the whole thing seemed daunting and maybe even shallow. That’s not really what I think anymore, but it took a second.

What changed your mind?

I think what changed my mind was having real experiences in that world, as opposed to standing on the outside and guessing what it might be like—actually getting involved and realizing that I take me and my values wherever I go. I meet people like me everywhere I go—and people who are different too, but not in a bad way. And there are parts of any large industry or job that maybe don’t make sense to you, but that doesn’t mean you have to forego the whole thing.

How did you land the Lopez gig?

I did Upright Citizens Brigade theater, which is an improv theater, and I performed there

The die is cast I’m now of the mindset that I really don’t have to watch any more of the continual election jive going down on the big basic news channels, namely MSLSD, Fux and the Clinton News Network (that last one a classic diss from the 1990s my old man favored).

I can check out any time I want because, honestly, I already know and have known for many months what I’m going to do in November, so why exactly do I need to subject myself to the daily breathlessness of 37 correspondents hairsplitting the latest bizarro developments involving Donald Cruz’s position on transgender urinals or Hillary Sanders’ emails to hedge fund hedonists?

It’s not exactly news that the chances are quite good that I’ll vote in November for the person with the “D” after his/her name. Indeed, the possibility that I would vote for any other candidate for president this year is pretty much the same as the possibility that Martians will land on the White House lawn with a really great new diet plan.

There are two reasons why, in the end, I, as always, gotta roll with the D team. One, I find the Democratic President to be historically inclined to not blunder into a disastrous moronic war (and let’s just not mention Vietnam). And even better, they seem to be less inclined to start a disastrous moronic war, and again, uh, Viet Who? (You know, back then, everybody was all high and wasted on that doggone Domino Theory, and that bullshit just messed up the crazy baldheads, big time.

Hey, man, it was the ’60s! I mean, that ultra-paranoid Domino Theory was to our foreign policy what a gas mask bong is to a job interview.

So OK, Reason One, I just feel less vulnerable to insane mistakes of aggressive violence with a Dem in Da Casa Blanco. Yes, I’m a peacenik.

You gotta problem with that? And Reason Two is simply that a Dem President is not, repeat not, going to be embarrassed by—gulp—siding with science.

It’s disturbing as hell to watch Republican candidates get all fidgety and squirmy when someone asks if they support some completely proven and well established scientific situation, and I’m not even thinking here about climate change. For some mutton-headed reason, Republicans always want to side with the maroons who think that the Earth is 6,000 years old and that Noah really did collect rhinos and spiders and tapeworms and put ’em all on a real big boat.

And I’m sorry, but here in the 21st century, a twitchy suspicious phobia of science, knowledge, and intelligence is a sure sign that we’re dealing with a bunch of dopes, a bunch of dopes who are a lot more dangerous, in terms of making stupid, ill-informed decisions, than any democratic socialist—or a zippity-doo-dah dude wearing a pot smogged gas mask.
