R.I.Prince Welcome to this week’s Reno News & Review.

Andy Warhol got it wrong when he said, “In the future, everyone will be world famous for 15 minutes.” The truth, now that we’re living here in the future, is that everyone is famous to 15 people.

One person’s celebrity is another person’s passerby. To some people, Steph Curry is the world’s hottest athlete, but two editors at this newspaper almost let “Stef Curry” make it into print.

That fickle flicker of fame makes it seem all the more unusual and powerful when there’s a nearly universal outpouring of emotion for someone, as when Prince Rogers Nelson died last week. Of course, there were the usual dickheads chiming in with “overrated” and “I don’t care about rich celebrities,” but even they acknowledged the enormity of Prince’s influence in their own backhanded way.

Prince was a stunning singer, superb dancer and fantastic guitar player. He was the undisputed master of the stage walk-off. He wrote great songs usually associated with other artists, like “Manic Monday” and “Nothing Compares 2 U.” His own discography is a world unto itself, a paisley planet somewhat removed from Earth and populated with odd beauties.

As a kid, I loved his songs in the 1989 movie Batman. I went dressed as Prince to a costume party in college. (At the climax of the ’80s pop star-themed party, we had a party-wide drunken singalong of “We are the World.” Simpler times.)

Later, I almost met Prince when he came into the bookstore where I worked—on my day off.

To me, part of the magic of Prince was that he blurred all the lines—the lines of music genres, gender and race. And he did it in a way that was seamless and endlessly appealing.

As I read tributes and watched endless videos of various artists covering “Purple Rain,” I thought the country might not ever be so united again.

And then, 15 minutes later, Beyonce dropped “Lemonade,” and then 15 minutes later, it was time for the season premiere of Game of Thrones.

Hey Bob, Thanks for another fine review! We saw Jungle Book in 3-D, and I’d recommend that version. My only concern about the film (is that still an appropriate term for a digital movie?) is that a number of jump scares and scenes of violence may be a bit too intense for sensitive viewers.

And I don’t mean just because of age.

At 72, I came off my seat more than once and would have to give serious consideration to taking young viewers (under 72 :).

In fact, there was somewhat of a disconnect in the movie between a jolly rendition of “Bear Necessities” and Shere Khan, the “pissed off tiger”, doing evil stuff. (Khaaaan! OK, I couldn’t resist :).

Re: “Planet of the vapes” (cover story, April 14): With all of the positive social and cultural developments currently taking place in the Truckee Meadows, comes an RN&R puff piece, forgive the pun, glamorizing our region’s “vaping subculture.”

The article’s characterization of the science on e-cigarettes is correct—it is basically in its infancy and anything but settled. However, most public health professionals agree that it is premature to call e-cigarettes a safe alternative to traditional cigarettes, and it is irresponsible of industry and vape shops to market them as cessation aids.

Re “Water supplies become a marketplace commodity” (cover story, August 28, 2008): The City of Reno was approached

by Goldman Sachs for “a long-term asset leasing that could potentially generate significant cash for the three Truckee Meadows Water Authority entities. The program would allow TMWA to lease its assets for 50 years and receive an up-front cash payment.”

Essentially, Goldman Sachs wants to privatize Reno’s water utility for 50 years. Given Reno’s revenue shortfall, this proposal was financially attractive.

But the water board eventually rejected the proposal due to strong public opposition and outcry.

Sanders should keep running The Republicans keep getting attention for the mess their race has become, but the Democrats are not in much better shape. The party of the people has lined up a corporate Democrat who never saw a war she didn’t like as its nominee, and every poll suggests the choice does not prompt the kind of enthusiasm among rank-and-file Democrats that will drive them to the polls.

The GOP has a choice of a blowhard who has alienated women and Latinos, making his election near to mathematically impossible, and an extremist who should be running on the American Independent line, meaning that pulling rank-and-file Republicans home will be just as difficult for the GOP as for the Democrats.

In other words, this is a once-in-a-generation opportunity for Democrats, not in terms of winning or losing but in terms of policy. They stand at risk of wasting the opportunity on another Clinton economic policy that increases the gap between rich and poor and tees up the Great Recession.

Granted, Clinton has adopted an economic populist persona in this campaign, but it was born not of conviction but of having to run against another economic populist, Bernie Sanders. It’s widely expected that as soon as Sanders stops dogging her heels, Clinton will be free to shake that Etch-a-Sketch and return to being the safe corporate Democrat she was before she had to contend with the Democratic wing of the Democratic Party.

Obviously, Clinton will be a status quo president, as she was a status quo senator. She is not a reformer, not an activist. Those Wall Street speeches for which she was paid more than some people make in a lifetime put her before audiences who represent her comfort zone.

Sanders’s campaign, however, made—and continues to make—history.

Laughter. I just get so high on it, and I just always—it’s a lot like a candle.

Laughter never loses anything from sharing. You can take one candle and light a thousand candles. And it doesn’t take anything away from the candle itself.

On Monday of this week, Vice President Joe Biden and his wife were on the road publicizing the White House’s push for free community colleges—a pale version of Sanders’s free college proposal.

Foreign policy experts say Sanders has changed the U.S. dialogue on the Middle East forever by speaking with respect of the Palestinians during the last debate.

Clinton has endorsed the Sanders-Schumer bill allowing families to pursue cases against Saudi Arabia as a way of learning more about the Saudis’ role in September 11 (which Obama says he will veto).

Sanders, in other words, may be losing, but he is setting a winning agenda for the party. Clinton’s aides and high level supporters are disdainful of Sanders, with one of them—former Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee official Brandon English—posting a “Go fuck yourself, Bernie” message on one website. But Sanders’s policies fit the traditional economic programs of the Democratic Party. Clinton disdains them because they come from Sanders. Yet when they come from Elizabeth Warren, she and her backers take a different view.

Had Warren gotten into the presidential race early, there would have been no need for Sanders to do so. Without his socialist baggage, the tie in Iowa would have been a win for Warren, followed—given Clinton’s weakness—by her running the table. Unfortunately, it was not to be.

But Sanders has a role in this campaign that transcends the campaign itself, of continuing to set the agenda, and the longer he can hold Clinton’s feet to the issues fire, the less able she will be to retreat back to the dismal Clinton economic policies, and the better off the Democratic Party and the nation will be. Ω

Primary suspect Voters in four Nevada legislative races won’t be marking their ballots this November, thanks to a spectacularly bad idea approved by the 2015 Legislature. The bill, SB 499, no longer allows voters to choose between two candidates of the same party in a general election when there are no other candidates. by Instead of facing all the voters in a Sheila Leslie particular district, primary voters of just one party will select the winner on June 14.

Three of the affected races are in Clark County. One, the local Assembly seat in District 26 currently held by Randy Kirner, will be decided in June since both candidates are GOP. The same malady afflicts the Washoe County Commission district 4 contest between Vaughn Hartung and Maurice Washington. Only Republicans may vote in that race Proponents of the bill, which passed the Senate unanimously and had a bipartisan 27-15 vote in the Assembly, say the new law will prevent people from “meddling” in a district where registration is lopsided in favor of one party,

districts of which Nevada has many, thanks to our rich political history of back-room dealmaking during the redistricting process every 10 years.

These “safe” districts often attract candidates from only one party, since it’s virtually impossible for the other party’s candidate to win against an overwhelming registration edge.

The so-called meddling occurs when party leaders make a conscious effort to avoid sponsoring a candidate doomed to fail, thus forcing the two same-party candidates to the general election so every voter in the district gets to choose their representative.

That is, it used to work that way.

Nevada has a closed primary, allowing members of political parties the opportunity to choose the candidate to best represent their philosophy in the general election. Senator James Settelmeyer, the Republican sponsor of the bill, told the Associated Press that primaries are often a matter of choosing between Bud and Bud Light but that’s hardly true in recent years when Republican primary voters have had dramatically stark

choices to make. One local example is the primary between Bill Raggio and Sharon Angle in 2008, a choice between a statesman and a flaky extremist.

The bottom line is every voter should get a chance to vote for the candidates from their district in the general election. If there are only two candidates and they’re from the same party, thanks to the Legislature’s gerrymandering, they should both appear on the general election ballot as they have in years past.

It’s not meddling for Democrats to choose the more ‘acceptable’ Republican when there’s no Democrat in the race. Whoever wins the election will be representing everyone in the district, not just the members of one party.

And what about the non-partisan voter? This new system leaves them out completely and seriously erodes the public trust many have labored so long to create, the idea that everyone’s vote matters. Almost 20 percent of Nevada’s voters are now registered as non-partisans who

are not allowed to vote in primaries.

Taking away their vote in a general election is completely removing their voice from the process, the very definition of disenfranchisement.

It’s not an individual voter’s responsibility to make sure every party has a candidate for every partisan office, as proponents of the bill suggest. A voter’s responsibility is to show up every election, informed about the candidates, and cast a vote, even if it’s between two candidates of the same party.

Sondra Cosgrove, president of the League of Women Voters of Las Vegas Valley, is right when she points out, “There is no advantage to voters in SB 499. It solely benefits the two political parties.”

The 2017 Legislature should rectify this mistake, but they’ll likely reconsider only if the public is outraged enough to complain about losing their vote. Now is the perfect time to remind every legislative candidate that elections are not for political parties; they’re for the people. Ω

Verities are being disputed For the first time since the 1950s, presidential candidates from each major party, Republican and Democratic, are challenging decades-old American foreign policy doctrine.

Republican frontrunner Donald Trump has questioned U.S. involvement in the North Atlantic Treaty by Brendan Trainor Organization. He says NATO may be obsolete. He says our membership is a bad deal and wants the European countries to pay more of their promised obligations to defend themselves.

Trump also questions why America should be involved in the dispute between the European Union and Russia over Ukraine. Why don’t the Europeans and the Russians hash it out? Why is Ukraine so important to America?

Russian jets recently flew very close to a US warship in the Baltic Sea. American media reported one side of the story—Russian provocation. No one questions why this ship is part of a “U.S. European Command”—or that, although in international waters, it was very

close to a Russian naval base and its cruise missiles could hit the major Russian city of St. Petersburg.

When the Berlin Wall fell and the Soviet Union dissolved, Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev and U.S. President George H.W. Bush (41) had an agreement that, in return for the peaceful dismantling of the Warsaw Pact between the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, NATO would not expand close to the Russian borders.

Instead, nearly all the countries in Eastern Europe and the Baltic States joined NATO, putting potentially hostile troops and missiles right up to Russia’s border. Even Turkey, a nation that has fought over a dozen wars with Russia, joined, putting NATO on Russia’s southern border.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has been called a “thug,” a “bully” and worse by Republican presidential candidates—but not by Trump. Trump says he and Putin can work together.

Putin does not want to be America’s ally (not that we would

ask). He does not want to be our enemy, either. He simply wants to put Russia’s interests first. Russia is wary of being fully integrated into the West, including too much involvement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Russia has its own alliances. The BRICS alliance (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) is one. Putin’s Russia looks East more than West, signing trade and security deals with China and other Asian countries.

Trump, who says he wants what is best for America, understands that Putin thinks the same way about his country. Nearly all of the other Republican candidates for president said they wouldn’t even talk to Putin, would make him “back down,” would even “punch Russia in the nose” as Governor Kasich so elegantly put it. Trump does not play by that Washington Playbook.

Neither does Sen. Bernie Sanders. In his New York presidential debate with former secretary of state Hillary Clinton,

Sanders brought up the plight of the Palestinian people. Bernie dug the knife in deep when he said that Clinton barely mentioned the Palestinians in her keynote speech to the American Israel Political Action Committee (AIPAC) meeting. The only Jewish candidate for President, Sanders did not attend, and his video statement was not shown.

Sanders believes the Israeli response to the Hamas rockets from Gaza, which were little more deadly than fireworks, was disproportionate in the number and type of casualties and the economic devastation inflicted on the people of Gaza. Many of our European allies feel the same. For a major party presidential candidate to say this to the former secretary of state was extraordinary. And the audience cheered!

Will this election actually help end the corrupt foreign policy consensus that has cost America so much in blood and treasure? Ω

Utility receives award NV Energy placed seventh on a list of the top ten electric utilities adding new solar power to their systems, compiled by Smart Electric Power Alliance, formerly called the Solar Electric Power Association.

“This year’s utility solar market survey truly shows the dynamic nature of the sector, and the positive, proactive role utilities are playing in the energy transition in our country,” said SEPA President Julia Hamm. “Utilities are responding to consumer interest in solar with cost-effective, innovative programs that provide benefits to their customers and the grid.”

NV Energy is currently in a dispute over its request, granted by the Nevada Public Utilities Commission, to reduce the payments homeowners receive for supplying solar power to the utility and adding a fee homeowners must pay for access to the grid. NV Energy said customers with rooftop solar were being subsidized by other customers, but an independent study said no such thing was happening.

A referendum petition to overturn the payments and fee is being circulated for signatures.

Laxalt prays for Missouri Nevada Attorney General Adam Laxalt has joined an 18-state brief to the U.S. Supreme Court arguing that Missouri should subsidize a religious pre-school.

At issue is a Missouri program to reimburse schools that pave playgrounds with recycled rubber tire pavement. Trinity Lutheran Church in Columbia applied for funding to pave its playground and was denied.

Soviet-style elections Nevada laws limit some elections to one party’s voters A little known 1997 Nevada law bars some Nevadans from voting on who their “elected” representatives are. It by has come back to public attention Dennis Myers because a recent change in the law has made those races more frequent, with the result that more races this year will be settled without most voters getting a chance to cast their ballots.

One-party races reduce electorate to that party The original measure was sponsored by Sen. Dean Rhoads, an Elko County Republican who represented several small counties. Before his law was enacted, when only three or more members of one party filed for an office, and no members of other parties, they faced off in the primary, and the winner was elected without ever facing a general election electorate. If only two members of the same party ran, they went into the general election without a primary election.

Sparks Tribune columnist Andrew Barbano last week wrote that Rhoads “got tired of beating the same opponent twice each cycle.

shot on sight. Rhoads got the law changed so single-party elections could be settled in primaries.”

Using state law to solve one’s personal political problems was not original, but was nevertheless still relatively unusual, yet the ploy attracted almost no news coverage.

Rhoads’ bill, Senate Bill 10 of the 1997 Nevada Legislature, provided that if only members of one party ran for an office, one of them could be elected in the primary and the race settled without further action.

Members of the other party, plus voters registered as non-partisans or third party members, would not be allowed to vote in that race.

The matter first came into play in a 1998 Washoe Assembly race in which Republicans Dawn Gibbons, Patty Cafferata and Horace Lucido faced each other, with Gibbons emerging the winner by a narrow margin. As a result, Gibbons was elected in that primary, and Democrats, third party members and non-partisans were excluded from voting in the race.

In a Clark County race the same year, Sen. Joe Neal won a Democratic primary against two other Democrats and was elected.

Republicans, third party members, and nonpartisans were not permitted to vote in the race.

Gibbons then introduced a 1999 bill, Assembly Bill 40, to repeal Rhoads’ law. Cafferata, her principal competitor in the race,

twice journeyed to Carson City to join Gibbons in testifying for repeal.

Also testifying for repeal were James Hulse of Common Cause, a citizen lobby group, and Lynn Chapman and Janine Hansen of Nevada Eagle Forum, a conservative organization.

The Gibbons bill passed the Assembly but was blocked in the Senate. In the hearing in the Senate Government Affairs Committee, Hulse’s testimony was characterized by the minutes this way: “He continued by commending the eloquence of Ms. Cafferata and Assemblywoman Gibbons. He believes that the Legislature made a mistake in changing the law during the last session to enable the kind of race that occurred here. Not only was Ms. Cafferata denied the opportunity to carry her campaign forward, but also a very substantial number of voters were disenfranchised. The dialogue that is normally expected and entitled to in a political election was cut short.

Therefore, for the reasons put forward, this bill should be passed.”

The minutes then continue: “Senator [William] Raggio interjected that Mr. Hulse’s language troubled him. The act of the Legislature last session did not disenfranchise anyone. These are partisan races, particularly in the Legislature. The Democrats could have put a candidate forward, so they were not disenfranchised, and had the Democrats done so, this situation would not have developed. In a partisan race, the primary election is the method by which that party nominates its candidate for that office. Therefore, Senator Raggio stated, he would take exception to anyone saying that the legislative act in changing the law disenfranchised anyone.”

Raggio was essentially holding members of a party hostage to its organization and its recruiting. But many people who register with a political party do not consider that party “their” party. They register with it in order to be able to vote on more offices in primary elections.

True party loyalty is rare. The notion that everyday voters must lose their right to vote because of what a private political organization does is a fairly novel one.

The Senate committee approved the repeal bill and gave it a “do pass” recommendation to the full house. But once the bill arrived in the Senate, it was set aside with a technical maneuver so no senator would have to vote on it. In effect, it was killed without a vote.

At the 2015 Nevada Legislature, S.B. 499 was enacted, and it extended the practice created by Rhoads’ law to races in which only two members of the same party file.

Now, not just races in which three or more candidates of one party run will result in most voters being shut out. The same thing now happens when only two candidates of one party run. As a result, there are more races falling under the law, and thus fewer voters who will get to vote for all their representatives.

No one was brave enough to sponsor the bill, so it was introduced by the Senate Committee on Legislative Operations and Elections. But Sen. James Settelmeyer spoke for the bill in hearings: “Senate Bill 499 came from my constituents who said they want to weigh in on the primary process.

They do not like that they do not have the ability to vote. This concept is to allow everyone to vote in the primary. … It is good to give people choices. This is a concept of a modified open primary. It would help everyone engage in the electoral process and also resolve some of the state ballot access issues. This is a discussion point to open up the primary for everyone rather than making it completely party-oriented.”

As finally amended and enacted, the measure was entirely party-oriented.

Republican Settelmeyer hails from a lopsidedly Republican district.

Every member of the Senate and 27 out of 42 in the Assembly voted for it. Democrats have learned there is something for them in shutting people out of the process.

Fresh tracks Volunteers build new trails on Peavine Peavine Mountain, located just north of Reno, looks barren from a distance—but up close, a network of trails and dirt roads reveal evidence of a well-loved landscape. This spring, volunteers from a group called the Poedunks have by Kelsey been working to add one more trail to the mix, an 0.83 mile long segment Fitzgerald called “B-Lite” that will allow hikers, bikers and other trail lovers to connect to Peavine’s extensive trail system from neighborhoods located along Las Brisas Boulevard.

Members of the Poedunks, a nonprofit trail building club, have been at work on Peavine Mountain since 2007. In that time, the group’s volunteers have constructed more than 30 miles of trail. Their name is rooted in local history. Poeville or Poe City—also informally called Poedunk—was a mining camp founded by John Poe in 1862, located on the slopes of Peavine. Residents were called “Poedunks.”

Although most of the members of the organization are mountainbikers, the new trails are designed for multiple types of users.

“We’re assuming that the trail runners, the equestrians, the mountain bikers are going to be using this trail,” said Kevin Joell, Poedunks board member and volunteer trail-builder. “We try to anticipate how they’re going to be using it, and use that in the design.”

The B-Lite trail uses modern design techniques that follow the contours of the land, with grade reversals to allow water to flow off the trail, reducing erosion. The design also takes into account the needs of each type of user. Mountain bikers, for example, need wider turns and banked corners.

A couple of weeks ago, I met with Deane Albright, founder and treasurer of Sierra Wellness, and Eva Grossman, who was, until very recently, the director of marketing and community outreach director for Sierra Wellness. Her husband, Jeff Grossman, is still the cultivation facility manager.

Eva Grossman is also a patient. She uses cannabis to manage chronic pain and prevent seizures. She’s passionate about medical marijuana, which she describes as the best solution to the “prescription medication epidemic.”

“I’m one of the people who has been thrown into pain management and stuck on these addictive narcotic

marijuana card. And then I was able to go to a dispensary, buy pot, and smoke it—fully compliant with Nevada law.

medications—and didn’t want to be,” she said. “And this is the only thing that has worked. I was able to get off of them.

You put people on these medications and, obviously, they’re going to get addicted. They’re physically addictive.”

But how is developing a marijuana habit any different?

Aren’t you trading reliance on one substance for reliance on another?

Grossman says no. First of all, marijuana is not physically addictive.

“With narcotic medications, no matter who you are, you start taking them, take them for a period of time, then you stop, you’ll start getting runny eyes, goosebumps, runny nose, vomiting, diarrhea, all kinds of symptoms of withdrawal,” she said. “With marijuana, you can use marijuana, and if you stop, nothing is going to happen except that maybe whatever you’re taking it for—say you’re taking it for nausea, the nausea will probably return and it may seem exacerbated at first because you haven’t had it in a while.”

In the cards Here in Nevada, medical marijuana cards are issued by the Nevada Division of Public and Behavioral Health. Another reason that some people might be shying away from getting a medical marijuana card is that there’s often a fear that the application process is bait used to get marijuana users to reveal themselves to law enforcement.

“When we first opened, a lot of people came in, and they were like, Is this a trap?” said Grossman. “People are certain that the cops are targeting them.”

But considering how widespread medical marijuana use has become across a broad spectrum of different demographics in the state and across the nation, the idea that law enforcement is using medical marijuana applications as a way to target users is a bit impractical.

It might sound odd, but marijuana use is now totally mainstream.

Still, the process for applying for a medical marijuana card in Nevada might seem daunting. Some potential patients might even have trouble tracking down the right state agency, even though many local medical facilities, like Nevada Medical Marijuana Consultants and Elements Cannabis Center, specialize in helping guide prospective patients through the process.

Currently—although the process has changed several times and probably will again soon—the first step is to go to the Department of Public and Behavioral Health’s website (dpbh.nv.gov) and download the application request form.

This form, completed and accompanied by a $25 fee, can be sent in exchange for the application packet, which must be completed with a physician, who will likely charge a fee. The completed packet must be notarized—another fee.

And of course, there’s the issue of what ailment qualifies for a medical condition. Although many patients have had success easing symptoms for very serious diseases, like cancer and HIV, it might sometimes seem like applying for a

card. Cards there are administered by medical professionals, not a state agency. And Nevada has reciprocity with California, which means that a California card can be used at a Nevada dispensary. You can’t get a Nevada card as a California resident, but getting a California card as a Nevada resident is actually much faster than getting a Nevada card.

Additionally, the Nevada card isn’t honored in some other states that have medical marijuana, including California, and Nevada cardholders can’t have concealed weapons permits. Also, California cardholders aren’t subjected to background checks.

Now, if you only have a Nevada-issued ID, like a driver’s license, you must use a Nevada medical marijuana card to make purchases in the state. However, if you have a federally issued ID, like a U.S. passport, you can use that to obtain a California medical marijuana card, and then you can use that ID to make purchases at Nevada dispensaries.

In other words, you can spend potentially hundreds of dollars and several months to get a Nevada card—or, as long as you have a federally issued ID, like a passport or a military ID, you can easily get a California card, which can be used at Nevada dispensaries.

“Here’s the options: you can travel through the desert for 100 miles without any water—or you can fly there,” said Albright.

So, I decided to get a California card. I could have driven to a nearby California city, like Truckee, to meet with a physician, but I decided to risk the internet.

Opioid pain medications, like hydrocodone and oxycodone, have a long list of possible side effects, some of which are potentially fatal. On the other hand, no one has every overdosed from cannabis.

Marijuana is, of course, already very popular on the black market, and many people who use it habitually are already self-medicating—even if they don’t call it that. However, it’s shrouded by the stigma of illegality, which might preclude things like total honesty with medical professionals. But even with the widespread popularity of cannabis, above-board medical marijuana consumption in Nevada hasn’t reached some people’s expectations.

“We’ve been scratching our heads and scratching our heads—why aren’t more young people getting cards?” said Grossman. “Why aren’t people getting cards? And we go out and talk to people, and either they don’t know we’re open, or they think you have to be gravely ill—which is not the case. Or when they do find out, it’s this effort to do it—and people are busy. It’s time and effort. But, if it’s 30 minutes? Then, it’s a no-brainer.”

Like I said, it took me a little longer than that, but saying yes to a two-hour process is still an easy decision.

“People are already self-medicating with cannabis,” said Grossman. “Maybe they’re using it recreationally to relax, and they’re self-medicating for anxiety. They’re using it anyway.”

Some recreational users might use cannabis to help them sleep. “Why are you having trouble sleeping?” asked Grossman, hypothetically. “Are you having trouble sleeping because your back hurts?”

Even those who use marijuana as a social lubricant might be self-medicating for a medical condition—social anxiety.

Chronic pain, difficult to detect or diagnose, is the numberone condition for which marijuana is recommended. And

I met Michelle Autry, the dispensary manager, and she told me that the process was going to change again soon, and if I were to have waited a month, it might have been even easier. The state of Nevada is going to make things easier by not forcing patients to wait for the background checks to be completed. However, they’ll soon require that California patients show an actual medical marijuana card, and not just the simple printed-out PDF that I used. This will eliminate the ability to buy cannabis the very same day as receiving a recommendation, but will also eliminate the long wait.

“The state is trying to do right by everybody,” said Autry. “The state is awesome. They do change stuff, but they change it because they’re trying to streamline it and make it better. They’re changing it because people are taking advantage of it. They’re changing it because it needs to be changed.”

One wild thing about the presence of medical marijuana is that potheads—ahem, patients—can easily turn into snobs.

There’s a cognoscenti culture around cannabis that rivals the wine world. The different strains of marijuana are very reminiscent of different wine varietals. In cannabis, the basic dividing line—the red versus white, if you will—is sativa versus indica. Sativa is more heady, energetic and psychedelic. Indica is mellower and more relaxing.

“If you’re looking to treat, say, ADD, you want a sativa,” said Autry. “If you’re looking to treat back pain, you would want an indica.”

I decided to buy a little of both. I bought a gram of LA Confidential, an indica, and a gram of Green Crunch, a sativa. Grams are usually $16 apiece, but the two grams

of house strains were $25. (As part of promotion they were running, they also threw in a free Juju Joint, a disposable e-cigarette preloaded with cannabis vapor and wrapped in a ton of packaging. It seemed like one of the most wasteful products on the planet to me.) A full ounce costs $300, which—my sources tell me—is about $100 more than street prices. Patients can buy up to 2.5 ounces every 14 days, which seems like a lot to me, but I’m not one to judge anybody else’s needs.

Sierra Wellness has a bunch of other cannabis products— face creams, olive oils, and “intimate arousal creams”—even CBD dog treats.

“Us here at the dispensary are like the first line,” said Andrew Koetting, an assistant manager of the dispensary.

“The state doesn’t have anywhere you get any information— if you’re someone who wants to get a card, or someone who just got a card and wants to learn more about cannabis. So a lot of our job has become educating the public.”

He said people often just come in asking about cannabis as a treatment for various ailments, from chronic pain to neurological diseases, cancer and HIV. “I was surprised by the amount of truly sick people coming in, using cannabis as a therapy and a relief for something that otherwise they’re only option is hard opiates,” said Koetting. “It’s been really eye-opening in that sense. And there is no demographic. … We have people coming in who are 18, and we have people coming in who are 85.”

The laws, regulations and processes keep changing, but the bottom line is that it was surprisingly simple and accessible for me to become a medical marijuana card-holder. Of course, there’s a ballot measure this November to legalize recreational marijuana in Nevada. If that passes, then the process will become even simpler. A nomadic artist found kindred spirits in Reno

Jen Charboneau is an artist, a nomad and an organizer of community painting events who’s turned rolling with the punches into an art career.

One day, her car broke down on the way out West, so she decided to stay a while and plant some roots in the Reno art community.

“I can see from this weird, outsider viewpoint,” she said, multitasking during a recent reception for her exhibit, Yesterdays News, at Reno Art Works, where she’s the new gallery and workshop director. Earlier in the evening she’d set up a small workbench where visitors waited in line, each with a newspaper page and a dollar in hand. For that low price, she drew a portrait of each person, a resourceful, assertive gesture drawing in bright pastel chalk, right on the newspaper. She moved to the front room to give an impromptu talk to an appreciative audience of about 20. Smiling broadly and moving like a dancer, she gained rapport instantly. She kept chatting with the crowd as she bent to the floor to dip a broad brush into pink paint and fill in a large, white canvas—which had been hanging on the wall all evening blank—with brushstrokes and drips over a charcoal sketch of the audience.

(The first two syllables of her name, by the way, are charbon, which means “charcoal” in French.)

Still painting, she explained how her upcoming painting events will work: “You get to paint. I’ll put in some subject matter. You paint some more.”

Charboneau, a Minneapolis native who uses a Canadian-sounding “O” in words like “out” and “about,” finished college in Minnesota in 2009 and promptly started wandering the globe.

In each city she visited, she said, “I would always find out where the art markets were. I’d do the $10 pay, and I’d set out a blanket and set out these smaller pieces of mine.” One day, selling art at a market in Broome, a remote resort town in northwest Australia, she got bored. She decided to start painting right there at the market to keep herself busy.

“Once you’re doing something active it catches people’s eyes a little bit longer,” she said. People stopped to watch her paint. She joined forces with a charismatic seven-year-old, the daughter of the market manager. Both Charboneau and the girl found working on the spot was a more stimulating, more lucrative way to sell their work than sitting and waiting for customers.

“I’d thought about moving out West for a while,” Charboneau said a few weeks ago, as she was installing her exhibit at Reno Art Works.

“I was actually heading toward San Francisco.” That was in October.

Her car broke down in Colorado.

The nearest offer for a place to stay came from some friends in the Lake Tahoe area, so she rented a car and drove to Tahoe.

Within a few days, Charboneau’s hosts introduced her to Rachelle Lanning, owner of a Reno yoga studio called The Studio, who hired her to paint a mural.

Lanning said, “She was just a friend of a friend. I saw her art. I thought it was great. I asked her to paint it in the stairwell for me. She did a great job. It’s a surreal, Asian, mountain-esque setting, where a OPINION

temple would be, with a spiritual vibe.

She came up with that idea.”

As soon as she finished the mural, Charboneau stared exploring the city’s art scene. She went on ArtSpot Reno’s mural tour, visited the Generator, and met Reno Art Works director Aric Shapiro at a birthday party.

“I was like, ‘Whoa, Reno!’ I was like a kid in a candy store,” she said of the easily available resources and connections she found here.

She got a studio space at Reno Art Works and hung her exhibit, a collection of paintings and metapaintings, in the three gallery rooms and the hallway. She paints traditional works on canvas, board or newsprint; types poems onto index cards with an analog typewriter; scribbles charcoal drawings and annotations right onto the walls, and often arranges all of these together into one piece. She filters the images she sees on the streets and in the media into drawings, painting and collages. When she exhibits her work indoors, she goes half by gallery rules and half by street rules, achieving the kind of organized fluidity and deft, confident rule-breaking that only comes with years of practice.

Charboneau hosted a version of her Alley Art event at the Fourth Street Victory Way Block Party April 23.

She plans to host yet another version during Reno Sculpture Fest downtown May 6-8.

Each city Charboneau lands in fuels her thinking in some way, whether it’s the street markets of Malaysia or the small but supportive art community she met in Moab, Utah.

In Nevada, as she explored the hills, valleys and hot springs, a thought occurred to her: “You can take a mural into the middle of the desert.” She’s now developing a plan to paint murals on transparent surfaces, such as Plexiglass or clear painters’ tarps, bring them out to the desert and photograph them with the landscape visible through the plastic.

Charboneau said she’s still a nomad, and that six months in one place is a long time for her. She’s been talking with contacts in Santa Fe and The Netherlands about projects there, but she doesn’t have immediate plans to move on.

“Reno is looking like a more stable accident,” she said. “A happy accident.” Ω

In 2013, after a teaching stint in Korea and more globe-hopping, Charboneau held an event she called “Alley Art” in the Australian cities of Perth and Fremantle. She invited 10 local artists and musicians to paint and perform outdoors.

“We had this big canvas set out for anyone who came to paint on it,” she said. “It was a community-created painting, then at the end all the artists that were drawing all day, they came in and edited the painting to make it a cohesive piece. So it was like 50 people created this piece, as a part of the community.”

Charboneau came back stateside, teamed up with a friend, and toured the event, starting in Denver.

“We went to 15 different cities around the U.S.,” Charboneau said.

“We would flash-flier, hire local musicians and artists, get a good venue, a good alleyway next to a café.

People would come, listen to music, then they could also paint with the project.” The tour culminated with a gallery show in Brooklyn, a selfpublished book, and a more refined idea about how to best encourage public participation in art events.

“The biggest thing that I took away from it was learning about actual communities that you were going to,” she said. “To be a visitor and just show up at the most popular venue that you can find on Google or Facebook isn’t always the best. Go interact with the community. Then they can relate to you a little bit more.”

During an Alley Art event in St. Louis, for example, she asked the locals to draw something that inspired them about their city.

Though some of the work in Tomorrow’s Man is made by wellknown artists, anonymity is the great equalizer for a curator who shows art and artists from all ages and stages— the same way Pinterest users might place an Eva Hesse sculpture next to a Coke ad next to a cool tree on their “Art I Love” pinboard. Everything belongs if you’re the chooser.

Pierson has a similarly unstuffy philosophy when it comes to the latest iteration of Tomorrow’s Man, the acclaimed group exhibit he’s curated several times before in places like New York and Paris. Named after a men’s physique magazine of the ’50s and ’60s, Tomorrow’s Man also shares its title with Pierson’s ongoing 12-volume art zine—a winking tribute to homoerotica set against a fine art backdrop, a project Pierson describes as “stuff to look at.”

The “stuff” has a few common threads—nude photographs, abstract and figurative paintings, some environmental photographs and text—but it’s not enough to knit a theory out of.

Any connections the viewer makes are likely to be created the same way they are on social media, through personal association and preference.

Questions like, “What does this tell me about the curator/poster?” and “Do I like this?” feel more relevant than they would in a less collectorlike show.

“Maybe somebody likes fine-line pen and ink drawings of freaky kids in orgy situations, or somebody

likes big graphic process painting,” said Pierson, talking about Michael Bilsborough’s and Florence Derive’s work respectively.

Other highlights include a collaborative “extreme decoration” wallpaper painting by Elisabeth Kley and Tabboo! (a.k.a. Stephen Tashjian), a weird and brightly colored collage series by performance artist and rocker Kembla Pfahler, and three quiet, sparkling paintings by Laurel Sparks that use juvenile materials such as glitter and Play-Doh to draw attention to receding, fading shapes elsewhere on the canvas.

Our complicated relationship with virtual worlds and social media seems to hum in the background of the gallery, given the typical setting for the nude subject matter, text-heavy pieces, and Pinterest-like feel of the show. But there are a few works that demand a direct comparison.

Like Cali Thornhill DeWitt’s photographic series of atomic bomb images with headline-y sayings like, “BUILDING MUSCLES” “WORLD NEWS” and “HUMAN HISTORY” layered over the top. It’s the sort of in-person meme that’s both hard to look at (it’s bright) and hard to look away from (there are explosions).

Or there’s Zak Arctander’s short black-and-white film. For three-anda-half minutes, the camera tracks between glass stairwells, crowds in public squares, teens lost in raves, a man getting off in the shower, and—strangely enough—a segment where old Hollywood actress Leslie Caron’s face gets Photoshopped into a family portrait. Real or virtual, the beauty captured by Arctander is both intimate and distant, frenetic and peaceful.

Pierson’s talent for assembling seemingly unrelated pieces is undeniable. Taken together, Richard Tinkler’s gray, geometric oil painting, Bryson Rand’s close-up photographs of tangled plant life, and Peter Fend’s aluminum sign that reads “Do What Must Be Done As Soon As You Can,” all gain an urgent, environmental meaning in proximity to one another.

It’s a lineup you might come across on your Facebook feed, but in Pierson’s show it’s deliberate.

For all of Tomorrow’s Man’s allusions to an online world, the exhibit ultimately brings you back to a gallery, a headspace, a piece in front of you where you can’t scroll away, though you can walk away. It just takes more effort. Ω

Santa Cruz Sushi 5640 Meadowood Mall Circle, 825-8109 I’ve loved burritos since the ’70s, and my love of sushi sparked in the late ’80s. Still, when I first heard about a “sushi by Todd South burrito,” I have to admit I was less than intrigued. A big ol’ burrito is a big mess of starch, protein, vegetable and spice packed into a more-or-less convenient package you can eat on the go. It’s not elegant, but it gets the job done. To me, sushi invokes a more delicate image wherein skill, technique and aesthetics work together to create edible art, even at the all-you-can-eat level. I can easily make a burrito, but it’s a stretch for me to make true-to-form sushi.

cucumber and carrot, but substituted cooked scallop for the tuna. The ingredients tasted very fresh and the combination was delicious. A variety of sauces are available on the side, allowing you to customize every bite.

As much as we enjoyed the wrap, some of the items from the small bites menu were even more interesting. An order of fish tacos ($6 for four) was enough food to be a meal by itself. Shells made of deep-fried won ton wrapper are filled with spicy cabbage, tuna, scallion, sweet chili and teriyaki sauces, sesame seed and mayo. The shell was very crunchy and a lot more sturdy than your average crispy taco shell.

I really liked these, and though not usually a fan of fresh tuna, my wife thoroughly enjoyed the unique combination of flavors and textures.

Even better was a serving of jalapeño poppers ($5 for four) that bore no resemblance to the bar food favorite. The peppers were sliced open and laid out flat, coated and fried in tempura, then covered in layers of cream cheese, avocado, teriyaki, spicy mayo, and a huge pile of spicy crab. They were a bit messy to eat by hand, but so worth it. This dish was both the tastiest and best deal of anything we ordered.

Everything on the tempura platter ($5)—featuring zucchini, asparagus, white onion, carrot and shrimp—was about average, save for one issue.

One asparagus spear was cooked just right and probably the best thing on the plate. The second piece was woody, fibrous and completely inedible. Similarly disappointing were orders of miso soup ($2) and baked mussels ($5, for six). Though full of tofu, scallion and sesame seeds, the soup seemed a bit small and was served lukewarm. The mussels—dressed in scallion and spicy mayo—were overcooked, dry and a bit tough. Perhaps these were just the wrong things to order near the end of the day.

The things that worked really worked, so I now have an incentive to go to the mall. If you’re in the mood for sushi and short on time, these wraps make for a quick and delicious meal on the go. Ω Photo/Allison Young

With this in mind, I decided to give Santa Cruz Sushi a go.

Inspired by the sushi-burrito craze popularized in the Bay Area, these folks are working hard to transcend their shopping mall food court surroundings. The service was quick and friendly, and the creativity and attention to detail exceeded my expectations.

Although the menu refers to its signature item as a “sushi wrap” ($10), there’s no tortilla involved.

Layers of seafood, vegetables and herbs are laid out on a sheet of dried seaweed and rolled up in the same manner as a sushi long roll, just a lot larger. The result is then wrapped tightly in paper and sliced in half, making it easy to share with a friend. There are several ingredient combinations listed on the menu board—including chicken, beef and veggie options—and you can customize the wraps to suit your taste.

My worry was that there’d be a lot of rice, but the balance of ingredients was actually quite nice. We ordered a rainbow wrap featuring salmon, tuna, yellowtail, spicy crab, flying fish roe, avocado,

Foulest of them all The Huntsman: Winter’s War Four years ago, when Snow White and the Huntsman came out, Kristen Stewart was all the rage.

The film made lots of money, and it looked like the former Bella had a new franchise on her hands.

Not so fast. Kristen, in a moment of shameful and delicious wickedness, made out in public—well, in front of somebody’s unauby thorized camera, anyway—with that film’s Bob Grimm married director, much to the chagrin of then boyfriend Robert Pattinson and, consequently, bgr i mm@ newsr evie w.c om her fan base. Plans for a sequel starring her were scrapped, and a whole new plan featuring her costar and budding movie giant Chris Hemsworth (Thor!) were hatched.

What producers didn’t realize at the time is that Hemsworth basically sucks whenever he’s doing anything other than playing Thor.

Blackhat, In the Heart of the Sea, Vacation, and now this mighty slice of hell are proof of this.

While Snow White was no creative party, it was a tolerable misfire. The Huntsman: Winter’s War is a star-studded absolute mess.

It’s a worthless slog of a sequel/prequel. It probably looked good on paper or around the pitch table, but the finished product plays like a drunken, straining Renaissance Festival where the organizer was strung out on heroin.

Because sorcery and magic mirrors were involved in the original, Charlize Theron can return as the evil Ravenna even though she was dead. Because Stewart is gone, there’s enough money for two new stars, so in come Emily Blunt as Queen Freya and Jessica Chastain as Sara. And, of course, you have Thor on hand as the Huntsman, the most useless, banal role this guy has taken on in his mostly useless and banal career.

All of this talent on hand, and what you get are the two main villainesses talking all slow and evil as if they were related to the elves from the Hobbit movies, and Hemsworth

garbling all his lines through some sort of Scottish accent. (Note to directors: Hemsworth is capable of U.S. and his native Australian accents. Attempt other accents at your own peril.)

The plot involves some sort of bullshit involving the magic mirror that allows Ravenna to come back. Don’t worry, Ravenna takes the time to explain just how she can come back and how she’s only sort of dead, but not really. Actually, go ahead and worry, because it doesn’t make much sense, even with her detailed, slow, deliberately paced explanation.

The movie actually starts some years before the first movie, with Freya all excited about having a baby with some married dude.

An unfortunate event inexplicably turns her into an ice queen, and she freezes a bunch of the countryside (echoes of Disney’s Frozen).

The movie then jumps over the events of Snow White and into a new, sequel type adventure.

So it’s a sequel and a prequel, all in one.

It’s unfortunate to see Blunt embarrass herself like this, slumming in a Frozen rip-off. She’s coming off the triumph of Sicario and Edge of Tomorrow.

Then again, Into the Woods sucked too, so Blunt’s agents need to keep her far away from fairy tale films. Theron, who has a mostly impressive track record, sometimes shows up in clunkers, so her presence is no surprise, and should buy her another decent house. Chastain is clearly looking for a franchise, and she’s not going to get it here.

Hemsworth certainly has movie star looks, and he’s perfectly fine when he’s playing exaggerated forms of himself. He’s possibly the worst actor on the planet when it comes to leaving his safety zone, doing difficult accents, and emoting. Basically, if he’s not wielding Thor’s hammer, he’s usually horrendous.

The lesson here, I guess, is that if you have Kristen Stewart in your movie, and she makes out with the director, don’t kick her out of your franchise. Give her a raise!

Christ, you’re in Hollywood, and all bets are off as to who’s doing whom. Yes, Stewart often just coasts on her worried, concerned, huffy face in movies like this, but at least she’s intelligible, which is more than I can say for marble-mouthed Hemsworth. Ω

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice

Director Zack Snyder has effectively knocked the wind out of two great comic book heroes. This film is a crime to every geek who has ever picked up a graphic novel. Hell, it’s also a crime afflicted upon hardcore Ben Affleck fans. Affleck could be a fine Batman.

Actually, he could be a great Batman. But, like George Clooney before him, he winds up looking quite ridiculous running around in a messy movie in which his character simply doesn’t fit.

A nice effort by Affleck to portray a nuanced, older, somewhat weary Bruce Wayne—not to mention a badass suit—is utterly wasted. As for Henry Cavill’s Superman, I’m longing for those short-lived days of Brandon Routh as Kal-el. While it isn’t entirely his fault, Cavill’s Supes is officially a dud. A sequel to the dreary Man of Steel, also directed by Snyder, Batman v Superman is a soulless step in the wrong direction. Snyder, who made a great graphic novel movie with Watchmen, has just completely lost the ability to put together a cohesive, exciting movie. The film drags, the character motivations make no sense, and the film totally lacks any sense of joy or humor.

Everybody Wants Some!!

Writer-director Richard Linklater makes a sort of companion piece to his breakthrough film Dazed and Confused with mixed results. This time out, he gives us a crew of young baseball players showing up for college a few days before classes and partying in various settings—a disco, a honkytonk, a punk bar—because it’s 1980, and things are all mixed up. The movie is full of bad wigs, bad mustaches, typical song choices (“My Sharona,” “Rapper’s Delight,” “Bad Girls”) and ugly ’70s cars. What it isn’t full of are the type of memorable characters that made Dazed such a delight. Blake Jenner (Glee) plays the film’s main protagonist, Jake, a baseball pitcher who has his eye on an art major (Zoey Deutch). Their little courtship is cute, but most of the movie isn’t as clever as it thinks it is. The cast of mostly unknowns deliver their lines like they are raining manna from their mouths, but none of it is all that funny or intelligent. For a film about baseball players, it spends very little time on the baseball field, and the ritual this team performs at the end of practice couldn’t possibly be done without killing somebody. It’s almost like Linklater is trying to make up for his garbage remake of The Bad News Bears by giving us a more mature baseball film, but this one feels too scattered.

Eye in the Sky

A drone pilot (Aaron Paul) has a missile shot all lined up and is about to pull the trigger on a houseful of terrorists when a little girl parks herself within the blast zone to sell some bread. This is just one of the dilemmas brilliantly depicted in writer-director Gavin Hood’s tense thriller about drone warfare and the political ramifications of collateral damage.

Helen Mirren is superb as Colonel Katherine Powell, determined to take out multiple targets on Great Britain’s terrorist list, but needing to check the legalities of all her strategies before she can make a single move. In his last live action screen appearance, Alan Rickman is terrific as Lt. General Frank Benson, drolly responding to the bureaucracy that’s keeping him from doing his job. Paul brings his best big screen acting yet to the role of Steve Watts, a drone commander torn between killing an innocent child or preventing potential scores from being killed in a terrorist bombing. Phoebe Fox gives a breakthrough performance as Carrie Gershon, drone co-commander.

The Invitation

Dinner parties tend to suck, don’t they? You bring a stupid bottle of wine nobody will like. You have no small talk for others gathering at the table other than the weather and your stinky feet problem. Your hosts may or may not be trying to kill you. Will (Logan Marshall-Green) is visiting his ex-wife, Gina (Michelle Krusiec), for a dinner party.

Gina has been away for some time, and she’s gotten all smiley in the wake of a tragedy she and Will suffered. Her new boyfriend, David (Michiel Huisman), is a bit of a weirdo, all happy and perhaps a bit too pleasant. In contrast to his pleasant demeanor, he shows the party a video of a woman, surrounded by members of some cult, dying by choice. That puts a strange damper on the party, but they all eventually make it to the dinner table, where things get

even weirder. Director Karyn Kusama (Jennifer’s Body, Girlfight) does nice work within the scary cult genre, getting good performances from Marshall-Green and John Caroll Lynch as a friend with a sketchy past. There’s a good mystery at play here, with a final act that delivers on the build up. (Available for rent or download on iTunes, Amazon.com and On Demand during limited theatrical release.)

Mr. Right

Jon Favreau’s delightful and funny take on the Rudyard Kipling’s tale of a boy raised by wolves is a winner. The story is pretty simple: A young boy raised in the jungle is pursued by a pissed off tiger (Idris Elba) who had his face burned by a human when he was young. When plans to leave for a human village are rudely interrupted, Mowgli (newcomer Neel Sethi) winds up staying in the jungle longer than he planned, and he must keep wearing the same pair of red baggy shorts. He encounters Kaa (Scarlett Johansson), an evil temptress snake, and other perils while building a special friendship with a big bear. And, as far as I could see, he never stops to wash those red shorts. A swim in the river doesn’t count.

You need detergent. Bill Murray is, indeed, a masterstroke of vocal casting as Baloo, the big bear who befriends Mowgli on his extended jungle trek. Casting Christopher Walken as King Louie, the Kong-sized master of all apes in the jungle, actually tops the Murray casting feat. It gives Favreau’s film an opportunity to become truly weird, very funny, and even a little scary. The highlight comes when Walken’s King Louie, portrayed with undertones of Brando’s Colonel Kurtz, suddenly busts out “I Wanna Be Like You.” Walken is perfect for the song and perfect for the character, making the scene an instant classic. The special effects are topnotch.

Don Cheadle makes an impressive directorial debut with this crazy biopic that’s mostly fiction but all fun. Cheadle plays jazz trumpeter Miles Davis, hibernating from public life in the late ’70s when a Rolling Stone reporter (Ewan McGregor) shows up at his door looking for a comeback story. The film then turns part comedy thriller as Davis tries to track down a missing tape from his latest sessions, something that never really happened.

It’s all just an excuse to use Miles Davis in a goofy story, and somehow it all works. Cheadle is awesome as Davis, even doing some impressive trumpet miming to boot. (Cheadle, like Ethan Hawke in the recent Chet Baker biopic Born to Be Blue, learned how to play trumpet for the part.) The film switches between Miles in the ’70s and Miles in the ’60s dealing with relationship struggles. No, the movie doesn’t really focus much on the actual music. It’s more of a weird trip inspired by the music. Michael Stuhlbarg is good as a shady record producer, and McGregor has a lot of fun as the shifty reporter who will do anything for a scoop.

Cheadle has made a good looking and sounding movie to go with his strong performance. It’s not going to win any awards for accuracy, but it’s a fun movie with a Cheadle performance well worth any music lover’s time.

Yes, this is another one of those hitman comedies. There are many, too many to recount here, so I’ll just get to the point. This one is pretty good because it has Sam Rockwell and Anna Kendrick in it. Actually, it’s only good because it has Rockwell and Kendrick in it. Kendrick plays a woman just out of a relationship after catching her boyfriend cheating. (She has a drunk-closet scene that is very funny.) Rockwell plays a hitman who wears a clown nose, dances when he kills, and likes to kill those who hire him to kill because killing is wrong. The two meet in a store and start an unorthodox relationship. They like the same sort of things and both have the ability to catch knives thrown at their face. She finds out he kills people and that sort of complicates things but they still give it a go. Kendrick, who is in a million movies lately (actually, six this year, not counting this one), has solid comedic chops and she should be a bigger star than she is. She also brings a bit of the crazy, and it’s convincing. Rockwell is Rockwell, and I can think of nobody better to play a dancing hitman. Tim Roth shows up as the guy who trained him. It’s all kind of forgettable, but mildly enjoyable while it’s going on.

Crowd pleaser Daniel Echo Daniel Yosafat sat atop a stage looking out over the massive empty chamber of a Catholic church. In a gorgeous Jeff by Bryan Akerley Buckley-esque falsetto, he practiced the song he would soon play when the late Sunday churchgoers shuffled in. The voice of Yosafat, whose stage name is Daniel Echo, resonated appropriately against the vaulted wooden ceiling and filled the space before this phantom congregation. Yosafat loves doing this week after week.

For Yosafat, music isn’t so much a religion as it is an artistic career. His passion lies with the possibility of building a life for himself through singing and teaching others with this talent.

He’s now in his third year at the University of Nevada, Reno, as well as his third try at a major. This one, he believes, will stick.

“I switched from engineering to business, now to music education with an emphasis on vocals,” he said.

Yosafat played piano and drums as a young child before becoming the guitar virtuoso he is now. He grew up in a family where everyone played an instrument.

“I’ve been surrounded by people who are really musical, so it put me in that kind of mindset,” Yosafat said.

His mother taught him a few chords on guitar, then after a few years of self-discipline and YouTube videos, he taught himself the instrument. He plays like seasoned rockers twice his age. He nails the solo in “Don’t Stop Believin’” without hesitation.

shops and bars for crowds who would wonder how he even got in.

Usually he puts his acoustic spin on covers of various pop hits—crowdpleasers and sing-alongs.

But he also recently homerecorded an EP of originals that could fit perfectly into his live cover sets, showcasing his guitar and vocal prowess as well as Ed Sheeran and Bruno Mars influences. It’s concise pop music that makes you wonder what defines pop music in the first place.

So after an early life of music, why engineering?

“It’s what my teachers in high school told me to do,” he said.

“Math was my favorite subject, surprisingly.”

But after a few semesters and a degree switch, he was sick of extraneous classes. It didn’t make him happy, and the college system fatigued him.

“I talked to my parents about it.

I was like, ‘Can I just forget college and do my own thing?’ Because I make pretty good money with a 9-5 job. With music on top of that, it would be sufficient.”

Yosafat thought hard about the choice, something that plagues many his age—go to college to get a decent career, a well-paying job? Or go to college to really learn something, to expand your knowledge of that thing for which you are so passionate?

As it turned out, he was able to compromise, with the help of his mom, who said, as a music education major, he’d just be able to become a teacher.

“Well, I like teaching,” he says.

Yosafat is learning vocals because it is the instrument he knows the least but remains his favorite.

“I feel like if I can get a formal education, start a business like private vocal lessons,” he said, the gears in his mind turning faster as he thought about the future and the many possibilities it holds.

But even if one of those possibilities is a backup career, his immediate sights are set on recording professionally through connections he made in UNR’s Audio Engineering Club.

Yosafat spoke of this idea with the excitement. He’s a young man with many paths to success laid out in front of him, yet still the college junior said, “Hopefully I’m on the right path right now.” Ω ART OF THE STATE

Reno Jazz Festival

S

tudent jazz musicians, along with clinicians, performers and adjudicators, will gather at the University of Nevada, Reno campus for the 54th annual jazz festival. Students will learn from master artists and participate in clinics and competitions. Top jazz artists will also perform during the three-day event, including jazz guitarist Lage Lund with UNR’s faculty jazz ensemble The Collective on Thursday, April 28, at Nightingale Concert Hall in the Church Fine Arts Building, 1335 N. Virginia St., University of Nevada, Reno. The show starts at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $12-$22. Grammy Award-winning instrumental fusion band Snarky Puppy (pictured above) and the UNR Jazz Lab Big Band will perform

the following night on Friday, April 29, at Lawlor Events Center, 1500 N. Virginia St. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $5-$28. What you seethe is what you get My boyfriend of a year used to fly into rages. He and his ex had huge, ugly screaming fights. He now uses “mental tricks” to stay calmer. Obviously, rage is a bad thing, but it’s also a passionate thing. Is it crazy to worry that he doesn’t care enough about me to get really angry?

When the cops come to the door, it usually isn’t to say, “Your neighbors called and said they heard you loving each other really loudly.”

Rage isn’t a sign of love—it’s a sign of bad emotion management. Research by doctor and behavioral neuroscientist Emil Coccaro finds that people who are prone to angry outbursts—responding to every slight like somebody just nuked Rhode Island—have exaggerated activity in part of the brain called the amygdala. This is a set of lima beansized structures that basically work as a security guard, identifying threats or potential threats. As neuroscientist Joseph LeDoux explains it, the amygdala makes a “quick and dirty” assessment that danger is afoot—before rational thought can get involved—and releases chemical messengers to get us to leap into action, as in, “DO SOMETHING BEFORE YOU DIE!” But because the amygdala is an evolutionarily ancient structure—one we share with sheep and hamsters—it’s not all that discerning. In fact, it makes a lot of mistakes.

That’s because our chances of survival are better if we jump out of our skin at a rustling in the leaves that turns out to be nothing—rather than being all, “Yeah, that could be a deadly poisonous snake, but I’m not letting it get in the way of a good bong hit.” Still, socially, a hypersensitive amygdala can pose problems—like our going all Kill Bill on somebody’s ass when they, oh, graze our arm reaching for a coffee lid.

Chances are that what your boyfriend has learned to do through these “mental tricks” is redirect his attention from the amygdala to the newer, thinkier “frontal” parts of the brain. Yes, your brain is about as easily fooled as Aida, my 6-pound Chinese crested. The vet holds out a treat in one hand so Aida won’t get hopped up about the other—which is en route to her butt with the same size thermometer they use on the Great Dane.

(Sadly, the “third leg” does not count as an actual leg.)

The thing is, if your boyfriend doesn’t feel pressured to put on a big show, the show might just happen. On your first day together, tell him that you just want to cuddle and reconnect—and act like you mean it. Your overriding goal should be making him feel comfortable—though not the way an ER nurse would, by cutting off his jeans while he’s asleep with a big pair of surgical scissors. Ω

Down by the river Charles Albright The Reno River Festival takes place on the Truckee River May 7-8. This year, the festival has been chosen to host the 2016 U.S. National Whitewater Freestyle Championships. Charles Albright is a local kayaking aficionado and instructor who played a part in getting the whitewater park built in downtown Reno more than a decade ago. The 65-year-old has been paddling on the Truckee for 40 years.

When you Google Charles Albright, it comes up with “Godfather of Reno kayaking.” Can you tell me how that got started?

Well, I started paddling in ’71, and I moved to Nevada in ’72, and then I started paddling here in Reno—lived in Reno—in ’76, end of ’76. And then the first thing I did was get introduced to what few local paddlers there were, and I ended up basically teaching kayaking to the public for 21 years straight, for free, every week at pools—either at Northwest or Moana, and then I also went to pools up in South Lake Tahoe, Truckee and Carson to help teach kayaking up there too. But that’s how it started. I sold gear and just arranged for people to find gear. And I do all kinds of competition. So I have lots of boats, and I’m willing to give them to anybody that wants to use them.

It’s looking a lot better. It’d be nice if there was a little more snow up there, and if we had a warm spell just before the competition, that would help immensely. It’d be ideal to have a 1000 cfs [cubic feet per second—a measurement for the rate of flow in a river]. Yesterday, it was at 800.

One of the best Prince stories now in circulation is the tale of his Super Bowl performance in February 2007, which happened in Miami for the game between the Bears and the Colts. As weather luck would have it, this would be the first Superb Owl to take place in a full-on rainstorm, which was troubling news for all those involved in the halftime show.

It was raining that morning in Miami, and the forecast was for it to rain right through the game. And indeed it did.

I do the slaloms and the downriver races and boatercross quite often. I run the slaloms. I’ll help with boatercross—running it. I don’t do the freestyle. I have a bad shoulder, and I don’t do play boats like that, because I want to keep my shoulder as bad as it is, and not worse.

One of the last times we spoke with you, in 2004, the park was pretty new. Are you still kayaking here?

Have you competed in the whitewater events?

Not enough to lose The first time I heard Prince wasn’t until his fifth record, his gigantically popular “breakthrough” album called 1999 (and when I say “breakthrough,” I mean the album where us white folks finally caught up with what this dude was layin’ down). The first cut on that disc, the insanely sensational title track, seems eerily and wonderfully powerful now, in the wake of his most unwelcome demise, where the first thing we hear is God, or some heavy cat with a low, distorted voice, saying “Don’t worry. I won’t hurt you. I only want you to have some fun.” And then, sure as shit, we proceed to have an absolute blast with the man as he sings, righteously and prophetically enough, “Life is just a party and parties aren’t meant to last.”

And god damn it, Prince’s party is now over, and it’s just a crying fucking shame because here’s a guy, a five foot two inch supernova of funk, joy, guitar, sex, love and terrific music who was 57, looked 40, and led this apparently thoroughly self-realized existence as a stone

chief got together with Prince to talk about the situation and concerns about the slickness of a real wet stage and everybody in the band being in heels and no cover or shelter for the musicians and dancers and so on and so forth.

And Prince’s brief, sly, memorable, legendary response—“Can you make it rain harder?”

Not only is this a quote from a supremely confident artist and musician, it’s a telling statement from a guy who very obviously had complete faith and trust in his electricians. Cuz, you know, playing electric guitar in the rain—what could possibly go wrong? Right?

Sure enough, he goes out in that steady rain and just nails his set and of course, finishes with a totally perfect “Purple Rain,” giving 70,000 fans and 100 million viewers what was easily the greatest Super Bowl halftime performance ever. Ω |
