Wrong angle

R.I.P. Welcome to this week’s Reno News & Review.

My grandmother died late last month. She’d been in hospice for a long time, and Alzheimer’s had slowly whittled away her formerly vivacious personality. When we—my brother, sister, cousins, me— were little, she was largerthan-life, someone who made all things seem possible. She’d spoil us with all the candy, soft drinks and toys that our parents would deny us. She made us laugh like no other adult could.

She also made us feel like we could do anything we put our minds to, that we could grow up to be anything we wanted to be. And most of all, she made us feel loved—an unconditional love. We didn’t know how lucky we were.

She was a teacher who taught everything from kindergarten to college. She was the first woman to run for public office in Okaloosa County, Florida. She had a direct phone line straight to Santa's desk at the North Pole.

I flew down to my familial homestead in Fort Walton Beach, Florida, for the funeral.

It was more celebratory than mournful. We told stories, shared laughs and drinks, played games. A group of us cousins took a boat out into the gulf and saw two separate pods of dolphins. Then I flew home.

On the second leg of the journey home, from Dallas to Reno, I sat next to a man from Oklahoma who had never been to Reno. He asked me about restaurants in Reno. I launched into a long spiel: “Basque cuisine … casino steakhouses … the farm-to-table and craft beer movements … all-you-can-eatsushi … a plethora of different Mexican restaurants.”

“Hey,” interjected the guy sitting on the other side of him, “Is there an In-N-Out Burger in Reno?”

“Oh, what’s that?” said the first guy. “That sounds good.”

I started to balk snobbishly, but then concurred—it is good.

And sometimes you just need the classics: a burger, fries and a milkshake, quality time with family, a fleeting glimpse of wild animals, a grandmother who loves her grandkids and wants to spoil them rotten.

Re “Return of the terrifying candidate” (cover story, March 31): I thought the grotesque caricature of Sharron Angle on your cover was over the top. We probably can all agree that her current entry into the U.S. Senate race is another misstep, as her time has passed.

But no one who throws their hat in the ring to serve in a public capacity deserves that level of stomach-turning vilification. and that includes the wily creature who handed Ms. Angle her head in 2010, the nefarious Harry Reid.

Troubled water The justification for the old Virginia Street bridge being demolished was to address the flooding potential of the Truckee River, right? Terrific! As a ham radio operator over the years who volunteered on several flooding incidents, all for it. Don’t the adjacent Center Street bridge immediately to its east and the Sierra Street bridge immediately to its west pose the same conundrum as did the historical Virginia Street bridge?

Y’ask me, given that those two bridges have not been updated to our trendy 21st century, so much for “flooding measures.” Indeed, all hail some cool green. That’s nothin’ new ’round these parts.

Anyhow, the city’s got a spiffy bridge that is, effectively, a bridge to nowhere.

Decade after decade, I’ve watched downtown Reno become practically a mausoleum with an “ambience” more like worms on the concrete sidewalk after a good rain. Go one block past that keen new bridge, and it’s a war zone without the inconvenience of nasty corpses.

Re “Mad about the mouse/Michael Sarich” (Arts & Culture, April 6, 2006): I am presently attending the University of Nevada, Reno, as an art major. I am enjoying the experience of being a student in Prof.

Michael Sarich’s art class. As for my art style, I am considered to be a realist-impressionist.

In my opinion, art—along with music, writing and dance—benefit

the students, one and all in a positive manner. As that statement relates to art, I am simply saying that just the act of attempting any style of art benefits the participant, even if they feel they have zero art talent.

Human beings are born to effect change, because it’s in our very nature to do so. Art excites the innovative mind. Hence, wiser doctors, lawyers, judges, scientists and so on.

Art follows rules, while at the same time, the artist can break all the rules.

Re “Reno City Council is doing fine” (editorial, April 14): I recall hearing this with the prior council, and if anyone asked deep questions they were accused of “going down in the weeds.”

As a result, no one was minding the store properly and the city almost was bankrupted with wild spending, incurring massive debt.

University of Nevada, Sprawl In 1962, the Reno City Council—at the request of the University of Nevada—changed the name of Center Street to University Avenue. The fire department then learned that the change fostered confusion between University Terrace and University Avenue, whereupon the city council rescinded the name change.

The city has often been too accommodating to the campus—sometimes without wanting to be—and often regretted it. Under state law, the city council’s ability to curb university actions that undercut the quality of life in Reno is limited. University leaders can be shortsighted, not through malice but because their academic blinders keep them focused on campus matters, not the overall needs of the territory they inhabit. In the 1970s, the campus newspaper Sagebrush discovered and reported that the university had altered the channel of the Truckee River without permission. UNR was ordered to reverse the change.

The Reno City Council must take a wider view.

Sometimes they cannot bring the campus to heel because state law gives UNR freedom from local permitting (see news, page 8). But that’s the point—because the campus already gets too much unrestricted power, the city councilmembers must do all within their power to subject UNR to rigor in scrutinizing its plans and making sure the campus is a good institutional citizen of Reno. At this moment, it is difficult to make the case that it is, particularly since it abandoned the late President Milton Glick’s policy of reducing campus sprawl and ending acquisition of neighboring homes.

Among the things the council must watch is the campus’s sprawl and its sensitivity to local concerns.

I think it’s really actually astonishing that they finished it. They didn’t just better it. They made it a healthier part of the city. It’s very interesting, and I think they did a really good job.

Earlier city councils encouraged expansion of the university into the downtown, while many residents— when they were consulted at all—felt it was a good idea for the campus to stay north of the freeway. There was near unanimity in neighborhoods around the campus that expansion should go to the relatively undeveloped north, not south.

Even better would be not expanding the campus footprint at all—to grow up, not out. Its not just homebuilders who should be held to anti-sprawl standards.

It is also airports, campuses and other entities that once grew without regard to quality of life. How serious is officialdom about sprawl if it doesn’t hold public institutions to the highest standards? The UNR campus has no need of growing in the near future, given the amount of empty land at the north end of the campus, and the airport should reduce its footprint.

Construction of the Redfield campus far to the south was typical of UNR myopia and sprawl. Faculty members complain of the drives they must make to the other side of the valley from main campus. Environmentalists note the wastage of fuel between the two points. And students avoid the distant location.

The university is a community resource, but that does not mean it should operate without rigorous scrutiny and accountability to the rest of the community, like any other entity. At its April 27 meeting, we urge the Reno City Council to break away from past policies of keeping hands-off the campus, listen closely to both sides of the issue of 19th century homes on Center and Lake streets— and avoid giving UNR undeserved preference. Ω

Bootstraps are not enough Nevada has a rather sordid history when it comes to suicide, with decades of experience leading the nation in the worst rates of suicide. But after the creation of the Nevada Office of Suicide Prevention and the implementation of a statewide suicide hotline, our rate started by trending downward—although the Sheila Leslie latest statistics, from 2014, show a frightening rise as we tie for fifth place with Colorado, with 20.2 deaths per 100,000 residents. The national average is 13.4.

Nevada has almost three times more suicides than homicides and the highest rate in the nation for older adults. We now lose more Nevadans to suicide than motor vehicle accidents or AIDS. Last Spring, there were multiple suicides at the middle school level in Washoe County, which horrified parents and teachers as they confronted the deaths of students much too young to experience the anguish and pain that leads to a belief that suicide is the only answer.

The reasons for Nevada’s high suicide rate have been debated over the years, with many pointing to our high transiency rates, access to drugs and alcohol 24 hours a day, a pioneer libertarian attitude toward firearms, and a lack of connection to friends and family. Others cite the cowboy “pull yourself up by your bootstraps” mentality as a poor substitute for a lack of publiclyfunded mental health care in a state that is miserly in its approach to providing a social service safety net.

Utah recently reversed an upward trend in suicides and experts are citing the implementation of the Columbia Suicide Severity Rating Scale, a six-question screening tool, in hospital emergency rooms and behavioral centers as a factor. More effective screening combined with access to mental health care are the key elements leading toward the goal of zero suicides.

The Nevada Office of Suicide Prevention is also implementing ground-breaking programs. One targets gun shops and ranges,

training workers to recognize the signs of someone considering suicide. The Office also offers schools a tool-kit to better confront the aftermath of a youth suicide and reduce the risk of suicide contagion among teens by not inadvertently simplifying, glamorizing, or romanticizing a student’s death.

Instead of lamenting Nevada’s poor mental health and our many risk factors, why not focus on what you can do to prevent a suicide?

Learn the warning signs, including a history of previous suicide attempts, talking about death or suicide, planning for suicide, and serious depression, often expressed as a loss of pleasure or withdrawal from activities a person previously enjoyed.

Take the warning signs seriously, since nearly 75 percent of suicidal people express their intentions in some manner to a friend or family member. Be willing to listen and encourage the person to see a physician or mental health professional immediately. Be prepared to take

him or her to an emergency room or a psychiatric hospital if needed.

Most of all, don’t be afraid to talk about it. Ask whether the person is thinking about suicide or if he or she has a particular plan or method in mind. Call law enforcement if it’s urgent. Carry the number of the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, 1-800-273TALK (8255) and visit www. suicidepreventionlifeline.org for more information.

News wired Governor Sandoval recently declared that when he asked teachers and school administrators about mandatory all-day kindergarten, preschool and other tax-funded educational expansions, they told him these educational power grabs are a “no brainer” to improve Nevada by Brendan Trainor children’s learning outcomes.

Governor Sandoval is not the first Nevada governor to refuse to use his brain by offering unquestioning support for these teachers’ union sponsored initiatives. Former governor Robert Miller testified at the 2015 legislature for Sandoval’s new taxes. In 1989, Miller’s tax hikes targeting class size reduction and early childhood education were also called a “no brainer.”

Since 1990, Nevada has spent almost $2.5 billion on class size reduction, and early childhood education, and the results have been dismal. The reason why these schemes to expand public education from cradle to grave are no brainers is because anyone with a brain can see they don’t

work. Numerous studies and Nevada’s own experience shows that children in larger classes often learn more than children in smaller classes, and any measurable advances in achievement due to early childhood education dissipate after a few years.

In 2001, the Nevada Legislative Counsel Bureau concluded that although popular with teachers, administrators and many parents, the Miller reforms produced no measurable educational improvements. Governor Sandoval should use his brain to look at the studies and Nevada’s experience and protect the taxpayers of Nevada from these old, failed nostrums.

Failure to do so will fuel the revolt in his own party against his taxand-spend educational policies.

The liberal culture war flamed up recently over Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton’s support for her husband President Clinton’s infamous 1994 Crime Bill that led to the overincarceration of black males, with

devastating effects on minority families and neighborhoods.

The then First Lady exploited the fears of soccer moms everywhere to declare that the “crack epidemic,” (which many believe the CIA had a hand in causing), was creating new “superpredators,” a.k.a. young males with no consciences who were murdering and rampaging in the inner cities.

Black Lives Matter activists and Bernie supporters have rightly hammered her and Bill for their fear-mongering for political gain. Hillary later admitted Bill’s mandatory minimum sentencing laws were a “mistake,” you know, like bombing Yugoslavia, voting for the Iraq war, and destroying Libya were mistakes.

Husband Bill opened the wounds again by defending her superpredator urban legend in a speech saying those who attacked her (i.e. Black Lives Matter) must like “gang leaders who send 13 year olds hopped up on crack out to kill African Americans.”

Any politician who spreads the old chestnut about how drugs cause violent crime and how they magically bestow super human strength and pain imperviousness on those who are “hopped up” on them is a fear mongering, craven jerk. The number of violent crimes due to drug intoxication itself is minuscule. Drug-related violence is almost always the result of black market turf wars due to prohibition itself, and sometimes addicts who are not “hopped up” on drugs but out of drugs and use violence to obtain them. Legalization is the cure for both these problems.

Are the 13 year olds who are given drugs to “hop them up” the same 13 year olds who are also “trafficked”? An urban legend that complex would make Michael Myers seem tame, but there are always white folks who will believe it. It is time for young people, and older ones who still have a brain, to push back before the Clintons’ liberal law and order state ruins thousands more lives. Ω

Tribal lands restored The U.S. Senate has approved S. 1436, a Nevada Native Nations Land Act, one of three tribal lands bills approved. The measure must still pass the House. It would transfer land from the management of federal agencies to tribal reservations: About 19,094 acres of Bureau of Land Management-managed land to the McDermitt Paiute and Shoshone Tribe; About 82 acres of U.S. Forest Service-managed land to the Shoshone-Paiute Tribes of the Duck Valley Indian Reservation; About 941 acres of BLM-managed land to the Summit Lake Paiute Tribe; About 13,434 acres of BLM-managed land to the Reno-Sparks Indian Colony; About 6,357 acres of BLM-managed land to the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe; and About 31,269 acres of BLM-managed land to the Duckwater Shoshone Tribe.

“The Nevada Native Nations Land Act is an example of the Senate listening to Indian Country and responding,” said Senate Indian Affairs chair John Barrasso, a Wyoming Republican. “Holding these lands in trust for the tribes will better empower them to use their lands as they see fit.”

Which is not the same thing as saying tribes can use their lands as they see fit. The bill contains language that says the U.S. Interior secretary can engage in restoration and fuel reduction activities on the land as well as sage hen (sage grouse) habitat restoration—and tribal gambling is prohibited.

U.S. Sen. Dean Heller of Nevada said, “These are the ones [Nevada tribal leaders] who know how best to use it in order to create local jobs and economic development. That’s the way it should be.”

As long as they don’t compete with white casinos.

This stuff is made in Virginia New York bashing went out of fashion after September 11, but it seems to be back, at least in Nevada.

Advertising like Pace Picante’s “This stuff was made in New York City” commercials was dropped following the 2001 tragedies. Now, the National Rifle Association, in its campaign against the firearms NRA LEAFLET background check initiative petition, is pitting New Yorkers against Nevadans by using “NYC” as an expletive.

Leaflets and bumpers strips signed by the National Rifle Association use the slogan “Don’t NYC my Nevada gun rights.”

The petition was placed on the ballot by Nevadans’ signatures and will be voted on in November. It and other ballot measures around the country are being sponsored by billionaire Michael Bloomberg. The NRA is based in Virginia.

Teen intellect at risk Nontraditional smoking—e-cigarettes, hookahs—is still rising among teens. As a result, efforts to reduce high school and middle school smoking are facing difficulties.

“E-cigarettes are now the most commonly used tobacco product among youth, and use continues to climb,” said Centers for Disease Control director Tom Frieden in a prepared statement on April 15. “No form of youth tobacco use is safe. Nicotine is an addictive drug and use during adolescence may cause lasting harm to brain development.”

A new CDC survey of teens in 2015 found e-cigarettes are the most used smoking product among teens.

That’s 16 percent of high school students and 5.3 percent of middle school using e-cigarettes.

That may be one of the reasons the council in years past has gained a reputation for a sweetheart relationship with UNR. Residents of campus neighborhoods have sometimes complained that UNR gets a free ride on some issues, particularly parking.

Lynn says the proposal before the council is “so convoluted and complicated” that it will be a challenging subject for people attending.

It will involve council deliberations on the portion of the city master plan dealing with that one part of the city.

Deadline looms Effort to curb campus sprawl comes to a head An April 27 meeting of the Reno City Council could settle the fate of a group of 19th century Reno homes near the by University of Nevada campus.

Dennis Myers Groups like the Reno Historical Preservation Society and the city’s Historic Resources Commission have been meeting and organizing to be ready for the council session.

“Once the city council makes this decision, UNR won’t have to come back to the council for further approvals,” said real estate agent Barrie Lynn, a historic preservation supporter.

“The tricky part is that the campus is exempt from permitting.”

Barrie Lynn Historic preservationist The university wants to plow under the homes and shut down Center and Lake streets, calling it the Gateway Precinct or Gateway Project. The university has been vague about what it would then do with the properties, but said a

College of Business complex is one possibility. “We will explore the possibility of constructing an academic facility, such as a College of Business complex,” according to a university plan. “The Gateway Project will also likely include student housing for upperclassmen and outdoor recreational fields.”

At a September meeting of the Nevada Board of Regents, UNR President Marc Johnson was told to move ahead with design of a business building for the site.

But UNR’s Heidi Gansert told KUNR on April 6, “We are not looking at demolishing those buildings. We’re working to try to find alternatives, and … that’s reusing them or reusing portions of them or moving them.”

“You’re always going to have, on a case-by-case, what’s worth saving, what’s not,” said City Councilmember Jenny Brekhus.

“But that block’s worth saving. …

A city proceeding involving the University of Nevada, Reno is different from its other duties that deal with development or construction.

There have been some complaints that the city’s Historic Resources Commission has been largely ignored on the issue.

DowntownMakeover.org noted in February that the HRC “only recently had the chance to insert verbiage into the proposed plan regarding historic preservation, a small paragraph in the plan that reads ‘Historic characteristics should be respected and maintained when possible and new development should demonstrate an effort to retain historic character throughout the city.’ … [T]o be on the HRC, you actually have to have a degree, with the exception of one person who has to have historic preservation experience? It’s a blueribbon panel. It seems sometimes like the HRC exists only as a requirement for the City of Reno to be a certified government entity.

The HRC is grossly under-utilized, yet it can be argued they collectively have more experience than our planning commission. Does the City of Reno utilize the HRC to actually plan development, or only use it to review development?”

The HRC does not have a big public profile. Its page on the city website does not list its members or provide any way to contact them.

It met at the beginning of this month and called for preservation of the Center/Lake neighborhood.

Lynn said, “Supporting historic preservation doesn’t mean that you’re anti-development. It just means you support a thoughtful approach to it.”

Brekhus pointed to the language of Nevada law.

Ample winter moisture brought a “superbloom” to Death Valley this spring, and may make for a great wildflower year across much of the Sierra Nevada as well. The Tahoe Institute for Natural Science is counting on it—or, rather, by Kelsey will be counting it, with help from local volunteers.

Fitzgerald TINS, a non-profit science education group based in Truckee, California, is organizing a “Tahoe Wildflower Big Year”—a project in which volunteers work together to document as many wildflower species as they can find in the Tahoe region in 2016. Last year, TINS organized a similar Big Year project focused on birds, documenting the presence of more than 240 species.

“It was very successful,” said Will Richardson, co-founder and director of applied science at TINS. “The idea is that you pick a geographic boundary, and within a year you try to find as many species within that taxonomic group as you possibly can.”

The idea of a “Big Year” competition originated in the United States during the 1930s, after the publication of Roger Tory Peterson’s book A Field Guide to the Birds. In 1939, a traveling businessman named Guy Emerson set the first Big Year record, spotting 497 species of birds in North America. The current American record is held by Neil Hayward of Massachusetts, who saw 749 species in 2013.

Although Big Year competitions traditionally take place among birdwatchers, Richardson and the TINS team decided to shift the focus from birds to wildflowers this year.

A Northern California scientist shares his game plan for life after fossil fuels—and he’s asking for seemingly impossible changes

If our transition to renewable energy is successful, we will be rewarded with a quality of life that is acceptable—and, perhaps, preferable to our current one. We will have a much more stable climate. And we will see greatly reduced health and environmental impacts from energy-production activities.

We all know this. But the transition will entail costs—not just money and regulation, but also changes in our behavior and expectations. It will probably take at least three or four decades, and will fundamentally alter the way we live.

This transition has never been done before. Most previous energy transitions were driven by opportunity, not policy. And they were usually additive, with new energy resources piling onto old ones. (We still use firewood, even though we’ve added coal, hydro, oil, natural gas and nuclear to the mix.)

Since the renewable-energy revolution will require trading fossil fuels for alternatives such as wind, solar, hydro, geothermal and biomass, there are likely to be some hefty challenges along the way.

Several organizations have already formulated plans for transitioning to 100 percent renewable energy. David Fridley, staff scientist of the energy analysis program at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, and I have been working for the past few months to analyze and assess those plans and have a book in the works titled Our Renewable Future.

Here’s a very short summary, tailored mostly to the United States, of what we’ve found.

produce electricity, it makes sense to electrify as much of our energy usage as we can. For example, we could heat and cool most buildings with electric air-source heat pumps, replacing natural gas- or oil-fueled furnaces. We could also begin switching out all our gas-cooking stoves for electric stoves.

Transportation represents a large swath of energy consumption, and personal automobiles account for most of that. We could reduce oil consumption substantially if we all drove electric cars. Replacing 250 million gasoline-fueled automobiles will take time and money, but will eventually result in energy and financial savings. Promoting walking, bicycling and public transit will take much less time and investment.

Buildings will require substantial retrofitting for energy efficiency. This will, again, take time and investment, but will offer still more opportunities for savings. Building codes should be strengthened to require net-zero-energy or near-net-zero-energy performance for new construction. More energy-efficient appliances will also help.

The food system is a big energy consumer, with fossil fuels used in the manufacture of fertilizers, food processing and transportation. We could reduce a lot of that fuel consumption by increasing the market share of organic local foods. While we’re at it, we could begin sequestering enormous amounts of atmospheric carbon in topsoil by promoting farming practices

Level One: The easy stuff Nearly everyone agrees that the easiest way to kickstart the transition would be to replace coal with solar and wind power for electricity generation.

This would require building lots of panels and turbines while regulating coal out of existence.

Distributed generation and storage (rooftop solar panels with home- or business-scale battery packs) will help.

Replacing natural gas will be harder, because gas-fired “peaking” plants are often used to buffer the intermittency of industrial-scale wind and solar inputs to the grid (see Level Two).

that build soil rather than deplete it—as is being done, for example, in the Marin Carbon Project.

If we got a good start in all these areas, we could achieve at least a 40 percent reduction in carbon emissions in 10 to 20 years.

Level Three: The really hard stuff Doing away with the last 20 percent of our current fossil-fuel consumption is going to take still more time, research and investment—as well as much more behavioral adaptation.

Just one example: We currently use enormous amounts of concrete for all kinds of construction. The crucial ingredient in concrete is cement. Cement-making requires high heat, which could theoretically be supplied by sunlight, electricity or hydrogen—but that will entail a nearly complete redesign of the process.

While with Level One we began a shift in food systems by promoting local organic food, driving carbon emissions down further will require finishing that job by making all food production organic, and requiring all agriculture to build topsoil rather than deplete it. Eliminating all fossil fuels in food systems will also entail a substantial redesign

What kind of conditions would result if we slashed energy use by, say, half?

Worldwide, we’d be at late-1950s levels; in the U.S., more like 1920. Not exactly the Dark Ages. Put another way: Half the current use would catapult the U.S. into the primitive state of using energy like the U.K. … in 2015.

Solar and wind technologies have a drawback: They provide energy intermittently. When they become dominant in our overall energy mix, we will have to accommodate that intermittency in various ways. We’ll need substantial amounts of grid-level energy storage, as well as a major grid overhaul, to get the electricity sector close to 100 percent renewables (replacing natural gas in electricity generation). We’ll also need to start timing our energy usage to coincide with the availability of sunlight and wind energy. That in itself will present both technological and behavioral hurdles.

After we switch to electric cars, the rest of the transport sector will require longer-term and sometimes more expensive substitutions. We could reduce our need for cars (which require a lot of energy for their manufacture and decommissioning) by increasing the density of our cities and suburbs and reorienting them to public transit, bicycling and walking. We could electrify all motorized human transport by building more electrified public transit and intercity passenger rail lines. Heavy trucks could run on fuel cells, but it would be better to minimize trucking by expanding freight rail. Transport by ship could employ sails to increase fuel efficiency, but relocalization or deglobalization of manufacturing would be a necessary co-strategy to reduce the need for shipping.

Much of the manufacturing sector already runs on electricity, but there are exceptions—and some of these will offer significant challenges. Many raw materials for manufacturing processes either are fossil fuels (feedstocks for plastics and other petrochemical-based materials) or require fossil fuels for mining or transformation (e.g., most metals).

Considerable effort will be needed to replace fossil-fuelbased industrial materials and to recycle nonrenewable materials more completely, significantly reducing the need for mining.

If we did all these things, while also building far, far more solar panels and wind turbines, we could achieve roughly an 80 percent reduction in emissions compared to our current level.

of those systems to minimize processing, packaging and transport.

The communications sector—which uses mining and high-heat processes for the production of phones, computers, servers, wires, photo-optic cables, cell towers and more—presents some really knotty problems. The only good long-term solution in this sector is to make devices that are built to last a very long time and then to repair them and fully recycle and remanufacture them when absolutely needed. The Internet could be maintained via the kinds of low-tech, asynchronous networks now being pioneered in poor nations, using relatively little power. An example might be the AirJaldi networks in India, which provide Internet access to about 20,000 remote users in six states, using mostly solar power.

Back in the transport sector: We’ve already made shipping more efficient with sails, but doing away with petroleum altogether will require costly substitutes (fuel cells or biofuels). One way or another, global trade will have to shrink.

There is no good drop-in substitute for aviation fuels; we may have to write off aviation as anything but a specialty transport mode. Planes running on hydrogen or biofuels are an expensive possibility, as are dirigibles filled with (nonrenewable) helium, any of which could help us maintain vestiges of air travel. Paving and repairing roads without oil-based asphalt is possible, but will require an almost complete redesign of processes and equipment.

Great attention will have to be given to the interdependent linkages and supply chains connecting various sectors (communications, mining and transport knit together most of what we do in industrial societies). Some links in supply chains will be hard to substitute, and chains can be brittle —a problem with even one link can imperil the entire chain.

The good news is that if we do all these things, we can get beyond zero carbon emissions; that is, with sequestration of carbon in soils and forests, we could actually reduce atmospheric carbon with each passing year.

Doing our level best This plan features “levels.” The more obvious word choice would have been “stages.” The latter implies a sequence— starting with Stage One, ending with Stage Three—yet accomplishing the energy transition quickly will require accelerating research and development to address many Level Two and Three issues at the same time we’re moving rapidly forward on Level One tasks. For planning purposes, it’s useful to know what can be done relatively quickly and cheaply, and what will take long, expensive, sustained effort.

How much energy will be available to us at the end of the transition? It’s hard to say, as there are many variables, including rates of investment and the capabilities of renewable energy technology without fossil fuels to back them up and to power their manufacture, at least in the early stages.

This “how much” question reflects the understandable concern to maintain current levels of comfort and convenience as we switch energy sources. But in this regard, it is good to keep ecological footprint analysis in mind.

According to the Global Footprint Network’s Living Planet Report 2014, the amount of productive land and sea available to each person on Earth in order to live in a way that’s ecologically sustainable is 1.7 global hectares. The current per capita ecological footprint in the United States

is 6.8 global hectares. Asking whether renewable energy could enable Americans to maintain their current lifestyle is therefore equivalent to asking whether renewable energy can keep us living unsustainably. The clear answer is: only temporarily, if at all. So why bother trying? We should aim for a sustainable level of energy and material consumption, which on average is significantly lower than at present.

One way or another, this energy transition will represent an enormous societal shift. During past shifts, there were winners and losers. In this instance, if we don’t pay great attention to equity issues, it is entirely possible that only the rich will have access to renewable energy, and therefore, ultimately, to any substantial amounts of energy at all.

The collective weight of these challenges and opportunities suggests that a truly all-renewable economy may be very different from the American economy we know today. The renewable economy will likely be slower and more local; it will probably be a conserver economy rather than a consumer economy. It will also likely feature far less economic inequality. Economic growth may reverse itself as per capita consumption shrinks; if we are to avert a financial crash and perhaps a revolution as well, we may

need a different economic organizing principle. In her recent book on climate change, This Changes Everything, Naomi Klein asks whether capitalism can be preserved in the era of climate change. While it probably can (capitalism needs profit more than growth), that may not be a good idea because, in the absence of overall growth, profits for some will have to come at a cost to everyone else.

This short article only addresses the energy transition in the United States; other nations will face different challenges and opportunities. Poor nations will have to find ways to provide all their energy from renewable sources while advancing in terms of the U.N. Human Development Index. Nations especially vulnerable to sea level rise may have other immediate priorities to deal with. And nations with low populations but very large solar or wind resources may find themselves in an advantageous position if they are able to obtain foreign investment capital without too many strings attached.

The most important thing to understand about the energy transition is that it’s not optional. Delay would be fatal. It’s time to make a plan—however sketchy, however challenging—and run with it, revising it as we go. Ω

Historic Reno Preservation Society walking tours STORY AND PHOTOS by Jeri Chadwell-Singley In May 1997, a small group of Renoites came together in celebration of an annual event that to this day doesn’t get a ton of attention—National Historic Preservation Week. Led by a woman named Pat Klos, the group embarked on a walking tour of the historic homes on Humboldt and Lander Streets (right in the neighborhood where the RN&R offices are located today).

Afterward, they proceeded to My Favorite Muffin to discuss starting a new organization to promote local historic preservation causes. The Historic Reno Preservation Society was born, and guided walking tours became one of its mainstay activities.

The third issue of the HRPS newsletter, printed in August 1998, noted the successful inclusion of HRPS’ walking tours in the second annual Artown celebration. The newsletter also contained a membership application and an advertisement for the 52nd National Preservation Conference in Savannah, Georgia.

A little box on the second page was reserved for a self-congratulatory shout-out: “The July 1998 issue of Preservation, the Magazine of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, has a small article about HRPS including a photo of one of our walks along Court Street.

Hooray for Reno! Our newfound historic preservation attitude is capturing national attention.”

A column at the bottom of the newsletter praised another bit of national attention—the Truckee Meadows Heritage Trust’s success in getting the Mapes Hotel listed as one of the country’s 11 most endangered buildings by the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

“HRPS kind of started because of the Mapes,” said founding member and administrator Cindy Ainsworth. “So, that was all going on in that period when we started, and Pat Klos decided, ‘Well, we need maybe another organization so people can come and voice their

opinions.’ And a few people did come and voice their opinions during that. We couldn’t save it, but that’s—I don’t know.

I get a little disappointed and frustrated with the way some of the—maybe the city has looked at it. It should be stronger.”

The Mapes Hotel was demolished on January 30, 2000, less than two years after HRPS was founded. But the group carried on. Today, HRPS offers nearly three dozen different historical walking tours every year between May and September. The money they raise through membership fees, walking tours, and their annual Harvest of Homes event has been used to fund some 30 grants, totaling more than $76,000, to help local homeowners rehabilitate their historic properties.

The path to knowledge HRPS tours are led by volunteers who dedicate their time not only

as guides but also as researchers for their respective tours.

“We’ve had some of our tour guides since the beginning,” said Ainsworth. “And we have some really good historians as volunteers.

We have a couple people who do like three or four tours, and they really get into the research. Once you start doing research like this, you really, really—it’s really exciting, you know, to find out about various homes.”

One such volunteer is realtor and historic preservation activist Barrie Lynn. She leads tours in the Midtown district and the neighborhood west of Wells Avenue. Lynn has lived in the Wells Avenue neighborhood for 13 years, during which time she’s had a hand in numerous preservation-minded redevelopment projects there and also in the establishment of the Wells Avenue Neighborhood Historic Conservation District.

“I worked for about four years with various entities with the

university and in the community, and we surveyed a 40-block area—between Holcomb Avenue and Locust Street, between Ryland and Vassar—and that was our conservation district footprint,” Lynn said. “We surveyed every structure in that area, and then we had to look at what was the predominant architectural style.

We had to look at the integrity of the neighborhood. There were a lot of criteria that had to be met.

And we qualified as a historic district.”

HRPS guides spend a great deal of time on research during the off-season between tours, when they’re regulars at the Nevada Historical Society and the University of Nevada Reno’s Special Collections department.

But according to Lynn, a lot of the most valuable information comes from neighborhood residents, both past and present.

“A lot of my research has been completed through personal

interviews. So, I have tracked down a lot of people that grew up in the neighborhood.”

One interview Lynn conducted was with longtime Wells Avenue resident Joe Bridgman, who was born on a farm on Wells Avenue in 1918 and spent most of his life living in the neighborhood. Bridgman recalled the trolley that ran down Wells Avenue when he was just a kid, and also the street’s transition from residential housing to commercial buildings.

“He just died about two years ago,” Lynn recalled. “He was 97.

He basically gave me all of his old photos, so I can see what it looked like and where he lived on his farm on Wells and Thoma. So, I’m able to use these pictures that people have just graciously given me from their family albums. That has added so much to my research.”

Choose your own adventure Most HRPS tours are only given once a year. They require reservations, and with only about 35 spaces available per tour, it’s a good idea to make them a bit in advance. More about dates and prices can be found on the HRPS website or the organization’s Facebook page.

called “Inside DeLongchamps’ Downtown.” The tour will be led by Sharon Honig-Bear and includes visits to the inside of the Downtown Post Office building, the historic Washoe County Courthouse, and several of the artists’ lofts at the Riverside.

Debbie Hinman’s “University Neighborhood” tour on May 24 will include the neighborhood to the south of the UNR campus, including the historic Queen Anne style homes that may be torn down as a result of the university’s Gateway Project plans.

On May 28, Cindy Ainsworth will lead the “Roads and Rails, Historic Fourth Street Corridor” tour through Reno’s emerging brewery district.

The tour includes information on the origins of the Lincoln Highway and stops by the historical Flanigan warehouse building, and the old Nevada, California and Oregon Railroad building—now home to The Depot Craft Brewery and Distillery.

Barrie Lynn’s “West of Wells” tour takes place on May 31 and will take participants along the route of the old Virginia and Truckee Railroad, which ran along Holcomb Avenue. A small section of the track remains near Brasserie Saint James. Ω

Way of the gun Deathtrap There’s an old adage in the drama world known as Chekhov’s gun: If there’s a gun by placed on stage in the first act, it Jessica Santina needs to go off by the third act.

So, bearing the Chekhov’s gun principle in mind, I’ll start by saying that when the lights come up on the set—which will remain a constant for the entirety of the nearly threehour play—you’ll see immediately that its walls are lined with antique weaponry, from rifles and machetes to pistols, daggers, a garrote, a crossbow and a mace.

Levin’s script and carefully arranged scenery and props drop important breadcrumbs in this way throughout the play. Every line and every prop mean something and lead somewhere. You won’t want to look away or miss a single line.

Take the opening scene, which is laden with breadcrumbs. I don’t think it’s revealing too much to explain how the play starts. Sidney Bruhl (Michael Peters) is an aging playwright who was successful long ago but hasn’t written a hit in ages. His latest is a flop. He and his nervous, excitable wife, Myra (Mary Bennett), bemoan their dwindling savings—primarily hers—and Sidney’s own inability to come up with an idea. Meanwhile, a former student from one of Sidney’s workshops, Clifford Anderson, has sent him an unsolicited script for his first play, in the hope that Sidney will bestow a few gems of wisdom on the younger man.

To Sidney’s great dismay, the play is good. So good he can’t find fault with it. He’d kill to have such a hit on his hands. Literally.

The Bruhls invite young Cliff (Chris Willson) to their Westport, Connecticut, home under the guise of mentorship, but to Myra’s astonishment, Sidney has a deadly ulterior motive.

This play-within-a-play is endlessly self-referential. Characters often refer to conventions of plays, acting and even the film based on this very play. For instance, Sidney and Clifford speak of the holy grail of theater—the two-act, fivecharacter, one-set thriller—the same format of which they are a part. It’s all very meta.

It also is a classic cat-and-mouse story. Just when you think you know which characters are good or bad, things change. The characters taunt and torture each other constantly, and until the very end, you won’t know where it’s all headed.

Peters reprises the role he held in 2003 in Reno Little Theater’s production of this play. He was strong in the role then, but now he’s a master.

His interplay with another masterful actor, Bennett, who is absolutely hilarious as the twittery, jittery Myra, is genius stuff. Also delightful is Lynn Carasali’s perfectly shrill, comical performance as Helga Ten Dorp, the Dutch psychic who’s just moved in down the street and whose visions keep thwarting the characters’ plots.

What I also love in this production directed by first-time Brüka director Michelle Merksamer is the careful attention to details— convincingly bloody fight scenes and the perfectly appointed set, the cozy living room of the Bruhls’ colonial home in Westport. You’ll find everything from a working fireplace (“practical to the extent that paper can be burned in it”) to the furniture (all well-selected for specific purposes), to the well-placed windows and doors that offer some jump-out-of-your-seat surprises, to effects such as a beautifully executed thunderstorm, cleverly designed and placed props and even transitional music that adds to the funny-yeteerie ambiance.

Despite the show’s length, you will remain on the edge of your seat waiting for the twists and turns in this story to straighten themselves out. And it’s a ride you’ll thoroughly enjoy. Ω

These days, I prefer dark roasts which I grind at by Todd South home and drink black and strong, but it wasn’t always this way. As a teenager—hanging out with friends at a diner and wanting to fit in—I sweetened the bitter, watery diner brew with plenty of cream and sugar. It wasn’t until a family trip to Hawaii that I first tasted Kona coffee and discovered what coffee could be. A later stint working as a barista provided even more insight, and from then on I was hooked on the good stuff.

Most coffee sold with “Kona” in the name is a blend of 10 percent Kona and 90 percent cheaper beans.

However, the folks at Kona Gold Coffee say they’re roasting and serving 100 percent Kona beans, along with a rotating selection of other varieties ($27/lb for Kona, $16/lb for all others). Though I pass by the place every week, I realized I’d never tried their food or coffee.

A big sign announcing a change in both management and menu was enough enticement for a visit.

My mug of medium-dark house blend ($1.63) possessed a nice balance of robust “wake me up” flavor, a hint of sweetness, and no bitter aftertaste. Definitely worth a 50 cent refill. A taste of the 100 percent Kona reminded me why it’s so prized. Kona Gold’s roast master has chosen a traditional medium roast, providing flavors that are nutty and smooth, with a hint of fruit, and a color just shy of milk chocolate brown ($3.50). My wife reported her

medium latte as being “just right” ($3.12), though I felt the strawberry smoothie I tasted could have used less dairy and more fruit ($4.25).

Bolstered by beverages, we moved on to the food, starting with a breakfast scramble ($6.65), comprised of three eggs, freshly grilled chicken breast, tomato, bell pepper, cheddar and jack cheeses, and a slice of sourdough toast. The portion seemed a bit small for three eggs, perhaps because it hadn’t been fluffed up with milk or cream as such dishes often are. It did not lack for seasoning and the ingredients tasted very fresh.

Even better was a large chicken quesadilla stuffed with plenty of meat, onion, bell pepper, cheese and jalapeño, with a mild salsa on the side ($8.75). The tortilla was nicely browned and stayed crisp to the last bite, a pleasant surprise for a coffeehouse quesadilla. The flavors and texture were exactly what I look for in this cheesy treat.

Similarly, a turkey panini ($6.75), with Swiss cheese, onion, bell pepper, tomato, jalapeño, and avocado was the model of what a good panini should be.

The sourdough was crunchy and grilled perfectly, and though all the flavors worked together in a very satisfying way, we couldn’t detect much—if any—jalapeño. A slightly less successful Kona club sandwich ($6.95) was filled with turkey, bacon, avocado, tomato, mayo, and lettuce. The bacon was crispy and the flavors were balanced, but the barely toasted sourdough did little to hold the whole thing together. Tasty, but messy. Both sandwiches were served with a heaping pile of ruffled potato chips.

The only real issue we encountered was the amount of time it took to get our order. We purposely skipped the morning and lunch rushes, yet during our afternoon visit, we waited more than 20 minutes for drinks and twice that for food. During that time, there were just a couple of other customers in the place, so I’m not sure what caused the delays. Overall, the food and drinks were enjoyable and the surroundings were warm and friendly, so perhaps with more experience the new owners will find their groove. They definitely have it going on with that great cup o’ joe. Ω

Bear necessity The Jungle Book The Jungle Book, Disney’s latest live action take on one of their animated classics, actually contains sly nods to Apocalypse Now and Saturday Night Live.

Jon Favreau’s delightful and funny take on Rudyard Kipling’s tale of a boy raised by wolves is a winner. Kids and adults will love the talking and sporadically singing animals, while by adults and some of the cooler kids will like the Bob Grimm movie references and clever Easter eggs.

The story is pretty simple: A young boy b g ri m m @ raised in the jungle is pursued by a pissed-off ne w s re v i e w . c o m tiger (Idris Elba) who had his face burned by a human when he was young (shades of Darth Vader). When plans to leave for a human village are rudely interrupted, Mowgli (newcomer Neel Sethi) winds up staying in the jungle longer than he planned, and

he must keep wearing the same pair of red baggy shorts. He encounters Kaa (Scarlett Johansson), an evil temptress snake, and other perils while building a special friendship with a big bear. And, as far as I could see, he never stops to wash those red shorts. A swim in the river doesn’t count. You need detergent.

Bill Murray is, indeed, a masterstroke of vocal casting as Baloo, the big bear who befriends Mowgli on his extended jungle trek. Casting Christopher Walken as King Louie, the Kong-sized master of all apes in the jungle, actually tops the Murray casting feat. It gives Favreau’s film an opportunity to become truly weird, very funny, and even a little scary.

While not a bona fide musical, Favreau does find some clever ways to mix musical performance into the movie. Baloo and Mowgli happily sing part of “The Bare Necessities” together while floating down a river, accompanied by a full orchestra led by John Debney. It’s great, but it’s not the film’s musical highlight.

The highlight comes when Walken’s King Louie, portrayed with undertones of Brando’s Colonel Kurtz, suddenly busts out “I Wanna Be Like You.” Walken is perfect for the song and perfect for the character, making the scene an instant classic. Johansson performs another song from the animated movie, “Trust in Me,” during the credits.

The story is in service of some incredible special effects that seamlessly mesh live animals, motion-capture work and puppetry.

The talking animals actually look like they are really talking as opposed to animals with cartoon mouths yapping away.

Other voices include Ben Kingsley as Bagheera, the panther that raised Mowgli, and Lupita Nyong’o as the wolf, Raksha, that acted as his mother. Giancarlo Esposito, a.k.a.

Buggin’ Out, lends his chords for Akela, leader of the wolves, and Garry Shandling voices Ikki in what turned out to be his final film appearance.

If you have a couple of extra bucks, go ahead and shell out for the 3-D or, better yet, IMAX version of the movie.

Favreau directed his movie very conscious of that technology, and it gives the movie some nice extra scope.

Tree branches look like they are going to poke you in the face, and it almost seems as if Kaa might get you into her death coil. The 3-D also makes the pop-up book end credits sequence all the more fun.

It’s worth noting that the movie, which appears to be a very outdoorsy film, was filmed entirely on studio sets and made within computers. Every landscape you see is artificial, making the filmmaking achievement something of a miracle.

Sethi, the only live actor with a big part in the film, is good enough as Mowgli, although interest in his character’s plight is perhaps diminished a bit by the fact the film is so much cooler when any of the animals are at the center of the action. It’s not surprising that Baloo and King Louie steal the movie.

Talks are underway for a Jungle Book 2 already, with Favreau returning, so the adventures of Mowgli might continue. Perhaps a main plot point could be Mowgli finding some new shorts or a bathing suit. He’s going to get a fungus in those red shorts!

Hopefully, Murray will get over his sequel stigma and be back as Baloo. And Walken …

I gotta have more Walken! Ω

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice

This is definitive proof that director Zack Snyder should be banned from the DC universe. The man who gave us Sucker Punch has effectively knocked the wind out of two great comic book heroes. This film is a crime to every geek who has ever picked up a graphic novel. Hell, it’s also a crime afflicted upon hardcore Ben Affleck fans. Affleck could be a fine Batman. Actually, he could be a great Batman. But, like George Clooney before him, he winds up looking quite ridiculous running around in a messy movie in which his character simply doesn’t fit. A nice effort by Affleck to portray a nuanced, older, somewhat weary Bruce Wayne—not to mention a badass suit—is utterly wasted. As for Henry Cavill’s Superman, I’m longing for those short-lived days of Brandon Routh as Kal-el. While it isn’t entirely his fault, Cavill’s Supes is officially a dud. A sequel to the dreary Man of Steel, also directed by Snyder, Batman v Superman is a soulless step in the wrong direction. Snyder, who made a great graphic novel movie with Watchmen, has just completely lost the ability to put together a cohesive, exciting movie. The film drags, the character motivations make no sense, and the film totally lacks any sense of joy or humor. It’s sad that somebody can’t make an entertaining movie with two DC classic superheroes, but that’s exactly what Snyder has done. He’s completely failed the fanbase, and he needs to be stopped.

Eye in the Sky

A drone pilot (Aaron Paul) has a missile shot all lined up and is about to pull the trigger on a houseful of terrorists when a little girl parks herself within the blast zone to sell some bread. This is just one of the dilemmas brilliantly depicted in writer-director Gavin Hood’s tense thriller about drone warfare and the political ramifications of collateral damage. Helen Mirren is superb as Colonel Katherine Powell, determined to take out multiple targets on Great Britain’s terrorist list, but needing to check the legalities of all her strategies before she can make a single move. In his last live action screen appearance, Alan Rickman is terrific as Lt. General Frank Benson, drolly responding to the bureaucracy that’s keeping him from doing his job. Paul brings his best big screen acting yet to the role of Steve Watts, a drone commander torn between killing an innocent child or preventing potential scores from being killed in a terrorist bombing. Phoebe Fox gives a breakthrough performance as Carrie Gershon, drone cocommander. The film poses many questions and many dilemmas, and wisely doesn’t take sides. It presents you with the frustrating situations and the consequences, and the viewer is left to mull it all over. This is one of the better-acted films in the first third of 2016.

Hello, My Name is Doris

Sally Field plays the title character, a 60-something office worker who gets a crush on John (Max Greenfield), a much younger co-worker. The two become friendly, and then Doris gets a little carried away into a fantasy world regarding him. Yes, she’s a bit of a stalker, but it’s Sally Field doing the stalking, so it winds up being kind of cute. Directed by Michael Showalter (The Baxter, Wet Hot American Summer), the film mixes goofy comedy with some of a darker variety. Field, who hasn’t had a chance to shine in a comedy in a long while, gives us a multi-dimensional character to go with the laughs. Greenfield is excellent as the object of Doris’ desire, and he actually has a palpable chemistry with Field. You never really know if something might happen between Doris and John, and even though Field is 30 years older, hey, it’s Sally Field. Showalter, who co-wrote the film with Laura Terruso, put together a nice supporting cast including Stephen Root and Tyne Daly. Showalter didn’t get his due with his sweet and funny feature directing debut, The Baxter.

His movies show he can go beyond the realms of outrageous comedies and deliver material with a dramatic oomph—while still managing to be a bit silly.

Dinner parties tend to suck, don’t they? You bring a stupid bottle of wine nobody will like. You have no small talk for others gathering at the table other than the weather and your stinky feet problem. Your hosts may or may not be trying to kill you. Gina has been away for some time, and she’s gotten all smiley in the wake of a tragedy she and Will suffered. Her new boyfriend, David (Michiel Huisman), is a bit of a weirdo, all happy and perhaps a bit too pleasant. In contrast to his pleasant demeanor, he shows the party a video of a woman, surrounded by members of some cult, dying by choice. That puts a strange damper on the party, but they all eventually make it to the dinner table, where things get even weirder. Director Karyn Kusama (Jennifer’s Body, Girlfight) does nice work within the scary cult genre, getting good performances from Marshall-Green and John Caroll Lynch as a friend with a sketchy past. There’s a good mystery at play here, with a final act that delivers on the build up. It’s a good ensemble cast in service of a decent script and effective director. Midnight Special

Michael Shannon, who has appeared in all of director Jeff Nichols’ films, plays Roy, father to young Alton (Jaeden Lieberher), a mysterious boy who must wear goggles all of the time due to fits where his eyes shoot out blinding light. He has the power to down satellites, to channel radio broadcasts, and to transmit military secrets. So, yeah, the government is after him, and the Texas cult he grew up in sees him as some sort of prophet.

Roy takes Alton away from the cult, led by the forever haggard Sam Shepard, races towards some undetermined location, because he knows his boy is important and that mystery meeting with something or other is important. The film has elements of Duel, E.T. and Close Encounters of the Third Kind on the Spielberg front, with the mystery and wonder of the best Twilight Zones. It also has the look and feel of some of Clint Eastwood’s best offerings, the dramatic intensity of Scorsese films, and even the better aspects of last year’s poorly received Tomorrowland. And, yet, it feels very original.

Shannon is typically strong as the worried yet emotionally closed-off father who doesn’t have all of the answers but will do everything he can to help his son. Joel Edgerton gives his best performance to date as Lucas (yep … a George Lucas homage), a former state trooper along for the ride. Kirsten Dunst plays Alton’s mysterious birth mother. There’s also Adam Driver as the sympathetic government guy (think Peter Coyote in E.T.) in full nerd mode, doing much to make us forget that sinister villain he played in that little indie film that came out last year. Nichols is, quite simply, one of the finest directors making movies today. If you haven’t seen Take Shelter or Mud, and consider yourself a film connoisseur, then get on it.

Mr. Right

Yes, this is another one of those hitman comedies. There are many, too many to recount here, so I’ll just get to the point.

This one is pretty good because it has Sam Rockwell and Anna Kendrick in it. Actually, it’s only good because it has Rockwell and Kendrick in it. Kendrick plays a woman just out of a relationship after catching her boyfriend cheating. (She has a drunk-closet scene that is very funny.) Rockwell plays a hitman who wears a clown nose, dances when he kills, and likes to kill those who hire him to kill because killing is wrong. The two meet in a store and start an unorthodox relationship. They like the same sort of things and both have the ability to catch knives thrown at their face. She finds out he kills people and that sort of complicates things but they still give it a go. It’s all stupid, well-worn territory, but the leads are good and they pull the material through. Kendrick, who is in a million movies lately (actually, six this year, not counting this one), has solid comedic chops and she should be a bigger star than she is. She also brings a bit of the crazy, and it’s convincing. Rockwell is Rockwell, and I can think of nobody better to play a dancing hitman. Tim Roth shows up as the guy who trained him. I have no idea what kind of accent Roth is doing at first. It’s sort of a Texan Christopher Walken kind of thing and it sounds pretty annoying. He actually winds up having a pretty good reason for the weird accent, so it’s forgivable. Anson Mount plays a crime lord with anger issues, and he’s one of the funnier things in the movie.

It’s all kind of forgettable, but mildly enjoyable while it’s going on. (Available for rent on iTunes, Amazon.com and On Demand during limited theatrical run.)

True blues Tynan Phillips Tynan Phillips, 28, is a young musician with a lot of mileage under his belt. Born in South Lake Tahoe and raised in by Jeri Gardnerville, he got his first guitar Chadwell-Singley at the candy dance in Genoa when he was 10. j eri c@ news r eview.c om “I had to have it,” he said. “It was like 70 bucks or something. My dad wanted nothing to do with it, and my mom was like, ‘Just get it for him.’ So I got it, and I remember only that moment, because I took the guitar to show-and-tell, or whatever, at 10 years old, and my teacher was like, ‘Well, are you going to play us a song?’ And I said, ‘I don’t know any—so here’s my guitar.’”

“The people on that, just the producers and everybody else, that were trying to like mesh me into this category here, just totally threw my entire emotions off,” Phillips said. “I couldn’t—that’s why I’ve been kind of under the radar for the last 10 years in my own hometown, because I didn’t like what was being forced upon me. That was not the path I wanted to choose, but it worked out in the way that I did learn—I grew immensely from that situation and did respect music a lot more after going through all that.”

However, the failure of his debut album wasn’t the only factor behind Phillips’ decision to back away from pursuing celebrity. Shortly after the CD was released, he was seriously injured in a car accident while driving through Minden.

“I fell asleep at the wheel,” he explained. “I was working super hard. I was helping my dad do construction, and he did a street sweeping company. So I was back and forth to Reno, and I fell asleep driving home … and slammed into a bridge abutment, and front flipped over into the river—broke my back, ripped open my hand.”

For Phillips, the accident served as a wakeup call. When he was able to play his guitar again, he chose to book gigs at small venues in Minden and Gardnerville, where he could pursue his love of jazz and blues and focus on recovering from his spinal injury. At one of his shows, he made friends with a local couple who taught Pilates and Jiu Jitsu.

“They gave me free therapy, basically, and it completely healed my back,” Phillips said.

The martial art became a new passion for Phillips. Today, he divides his time between teaching Jiu Jitsu and practicing his fingerpicking, thumb-slapping style of blues and jazz guitar at local venues. Phillips and a friend are looking to put a band together, but the pursuit of musical acclaim still isn’t on his radar.

“I don’t think I like the limelight as much as I like knowing that people enjoy the music that was created, so I think producing might be the next best step for me,” Phillips said. Ω

Phillips didn’t start playing until he was 15. He taught himself to play by ear.

“Eight hours a day I was studying, at least—through the midnight hours,” Phillips said. “I would go straight home from school and just play my guitar until my fingers bled, until I could play the song exactly how it was. And I wasn’t even into good music yet.”

Phillips became interested in jazz and blues during his late teens and began playing shows in Reno.

He got a manager—John Procaccini from the Upstage Center in Carson City—to help him launch his music career. After opening for Ben Harper and playing alongside John Mayer, his career seemed primed to take off. He was asked to put a CD together, but pressure from his industry mentors to give the album a mainstream pop sound didn’t sit well with Phillips. When The Path I Choose was released in 2006, no one was happy with the result.

My girlfriend and I are both struggling artists in our early 20s. We have a lot of fun, and being poor together seems oddly bonding. But I read an article about a study that said that couples with lower credit scores and less money are less likely to stay together than those with money and good credit. Should we be worried?

Lack of money is the root of many arguments. So, sure, the same couple is likely to be happier if the island they can afford to “winter” on is one in the middle of the South Pacific, as opposed to one in the middle of a four-lane highway.

Still, it’s a little premature to gear up for a bitter battle to divide the Top Ramen and takeout “silverware” packets.

Before I explain why, in case any readers pay bills out of a coffee can buried in the backyard, your credit score is a numerical ranking (up to 800) that uses your credit repayment history to predict your credit repayment future (like whether you’re more likely to pay what you owe or, say, fake your own death).

In the study you’re referring to, economist Jane Dokko and her colleagues looked at nearly 16 years’ worth of credit scores of 12 million randomly selected U.S. consumers. They found that two people who come into a relationship with high credit scores—and scores that are relatively similar—are more likely to stay together.

People who have high credit scores tend to be conscientious sorts with a habit of meeting their obligations. But there are also sociopaths with high credit scores—perhaps because they have lucrative jobs and plenty of dough to pay the electric bill (and recognize that it’s easier to scam people if they don’t have to do their plotting by candlelight). Conversely, somebody with a lower score may have been through something catastrophic (a medical bankruptcy as opposed to a moral one).

You might also keep in mind that a study isn’t a crystal ball airing the TV show of your future—it’s merely a guess of what could happen to you based on how things went for a lot of people. Also, the key thing to note about this particular study is that credit scores are being used as a measure of trustworthiness. And, not surprisingly, a mismatch in a couple’s ethical makeup—specifically, in how trustworthy each partner is—can prove problematic for the happily-ever-after-ness of their relationship.

However, even if your most recent rejection letter from a credit card company starts “Nice try, butthead”

(a refreshing change from their usual “You’ve gotta be fucking kidding”), all is not bleak. Though research finds that money actually can “buy happiness,” social psychologist Elizabeth Dunn explains in a 2011 paper that “it buys less than most people think.” In fact, she deems “the correlation between income and happiness” “modest” and “surprisingly weak.”

Dunn notes that where we go wrong is in what we think will make us happy—versus what actually does. One thing we don’t anticipate is “adaptation”—how we quickly get acclimated to things we buy or are given, which means they soon stop giving us the buzz they did at first. And because our big happiness burst is right when we get something (or take the first sip or bite), Dunn writes that “frequent, small pleasures—double lattes … and high thread-count socks”—make us happier than occasional big ones (like new floors, a new car, or a new chin).

And in even better news for you two, Dunn explains that experiences seem to make us happier than things.

Because experiences live on in our heads as stories, they don’t succumb to adaptation the way objects do. We get renewed enjoyment remembering and talking about them—in a way we don’t by verbally bludgeoning people with the fabulousness of our $5,000 espresso machineslash-massage chair.

And—fascinatingly—bad experiences may lead to more long-term happiness than good ones. By bad experiences, Dunn doesn’t mean screaming matches in the middle of the framing store. She’s talking about the kind you look back on and laugh about, like breaking down in some terrifying part of town, thanks to how your car is held together by duct tape, tree sap and hope.

This brings us to what Dunn reports is “our greatest source of happiness”—other people. And it’s here that you’ve got something over the more moneyed couples.

They rarely experience the cooperative creativity and loving dedication that go into even the most mundane activities when you’re poor—like holding the antenna of your Salvation Army TV at a 47.8-degree angle for your boo: “OK, honey—there! Don’t move! Only 18 more minutes till this episode is over!”

Survivor Marshall Roberson Looking through some old RN&R editions, we realized it had been two decades since the arrival of big box stores like Barnes and Noble, Office Depot, Office Max and Tower Records forced numerous Reno merchants (Siri Office Supply, Bold Print Books, Redwood Books, the CD Store) out of business. A few like Sundance Books survived and, with the recent merger of Office Depot and Office Max—and the resulting shutdown of a Reno Office Max—we decided to look in on one of the local survivors, Marshall Roberson of Discount Office Supply, 727 W. Fifth St.

How long has Discount Office existed?

This store has been in this location since 1996, but it’s been around since 1976. I’ve owned it since 1996.

So you didn’t have to deal with when the big box stores arrived in town?

Well, yes, because they weren’t around when the store first started. But yes, when I bought it, the big box stores were already here. Not all of them—Staples wasn’t here, but Office Depot and Office Max were here.

How do you compete with them?

Well, with service, because on price, we’re fairly competitive. So on most things, we’re the same thing. Sometimes they’re a little

I started doing the accounting for this company in 1984, and eventually I bought it.

Oh, so you were with the company when the big boxes started arriving? Do you remember the impact.

Is there a different inventory?

They stock more computer stuff. We have some computer stuff, but we don’t have the hardware except for printers.

Other than that, we carry a lot of the oddball stuff.

Well, it wasn’t really the big box stores initially. It was Costco coming in. A lot of the major wholesalers started shutting down. Now there’s basically just two, and there are some small regional ones.

So you survived. How long do you think you’ll keep going?

It did, because Office Max and Office Depot merged, because Office Depot was losing money left and right. They merged with Office Max, and they were kind of close [together in the Truckee Meadows], so I figured that they’d probably do that.

Well, at least another 10 years. Then it will be time to retire. Ω

OK, so where is it that American scores head south? In the category of citizenship, which takes into account human rights, environmental awareness, and gender equality, we come in at 11. Not horrible, but not particularly gleaming, either. And in the crucial category of QOL, quality of life, which considers critical areas of daily living, including affordability, job market, political stability, safety, public education and health care, we slip to a 14th place finish. Yes, that puts us ahead of Singapore and Spain, for example, but behind Ireland, Austria, Australia and number one Canada. Ireland?

Is 14th place a disaster? No, not really. I mean, I’m sure we’re a solid 14th. But God’s favorite country in all of Infinity, forever and ever, amen?

God might just have to throw a flag on us for that haughty blast of selfrighteous gasbaggery. Ω

A few months ago, U.S. News and World Report published its Best Countries survey, a poll that used a veritable ton of data, statistics, and anecdotes. And you know what? We did all right. In the Overall Best Countries rankings, we came in fourth, behind Germany, Canada and the United Kingdom. So, you know, not bad. But my main point here—yes, while we’re doing pretty well, perhaps we can chill just a tad with the “greatest goddamn country since fish crawled out of the slime” rhetoric.

For example, in the category of entrepreneurship, rating countries where new businesses can successfully be born and nurtured, we did well, ranking third behind Germany and Japan. In power, we were an obvious first, ahead of Russia and China, a very predictable score for us, the Rome of the modern age.

What made you get into this line of work?

higher, sometimes we’re a little higher on different things, but it all balances out. We have the local service. When you talk to us, you’re talking to us here, not somebody in Florida or India or wherever their call centers are.
