One person’s terror

Sharp Angle Welcome to this week’s Reno News & Review.

Last week, KOLO, the local ABC affiliate, ran a story about our April Fools Day issue cover—the one featuring U.S. senate candidate Sharron Angle depicted as some kind of B-movie monster. The TV news story apparently inspired some of her supporters more than the actual issue. So, we got a few letters complaining that the cover image was “over the top.”

Some of these letters can be found on this very page.

And some of these letter writers seem to have missed that the accompanying story, which described Angle hatching from a cocoon during a black magic ritual, was clearly satirical.

It was even marked as such with a disclaimer. I wonder if these people also believed the story about the lake-dwelling creature Tahoe Tessie moving to Pyramid Lake?

Either that, or they think we here in the “liberal media” take our job of demonizing conservative politicians quite literally.

Anyway, Angle put out a statement, which read in part: “I have grandchildren, so I know what it’s like when they start coloring and making things up like they do, although mine wouldn’t draw anything like this. I get that it’s a joke. I have a sense of humor. However, the voters in Nevada do not see it that way. People have been calling me with comments such as, ‘a very bigoted article, very offensive in poor taste,’ or ‘for a paper that supposedly defends women they sure are good at attacking them.’ ” Further down, the statement continued, “Two Papers in One Bed: There is a long standing intimate relationship between the editorial staff of the Reno Gazette-Journal … and the Reno News & Review. … I just wonder if the executives at the USA Today and News & Review are aware of this cozy relationship between these two editorial staffs.”

Asked for comment about what he describes as Angle’s “libelous and sexually harassing insinuations,” RN&R editor emeritus D. Brian Burghart said, “As someone who consorts with Satan outside her marriage, I’d think Ms. Angle would have better things to do than to point fingers.”

Re “Return of the terrifying candidate” (cover story, March 31): I was disgusted by the Dan Brumby hit piece on Sharron Angle in the March 31 edition.

The potty-mouth verbiage was so offensive that I cannot believe it passed an editorial review, or do you even have an editorial review?

Or was the editor out that day? Or was the editor stoned that day? If you are writing something against a candidate for office, please attack the candidate’s policies, platform or politics. Give the reader something he can grasp onto to vote for or against a candidate. What you printed was so egregious, I suspect it will have the exact opposite intent, and there will be those who will vote for Sharron Angle just for the purpose of countering your complete lack of journalistic integrity.

He very publicly jumped on the immigration issue and is now hoping to ride it all the way to the White House.

Forward to the past Talk about being stuck in the 50s.

The Washoe County Republican Party approved a platform that reads like a document right out of 1955.

Anti-gay. Anti-science. Anti-women making their own choices about their lives.

The platform was so regressive, by several millennials complained to Sheila Leslie a reporter from the Reno GazetteJournal that the party wasn’t even willing to debate the issues of ‘man-made climate change,’ samesex marriage or the legalization and taxation of marijuana. Another said, “Young people care about these social issues. If you give them social issues that they want with fiscal conservatism, that’s how you’re going to win the youth vote.”

Washoe County’s Republican Party Chairman Adam Khan, who is just 24, has indicated he and other party officers plan to resign en masse soon after the convention due to unresolvable differences with a vocal minority of Republican activists. He agrees the party is “going

to push people out because of some of these policies and it just doesn’t make sense.”

He’s right. The more moderate Republicans who are open to evolving on social issues are abandoning the traditional party structure in droves. This may be the backlash election Democrats have been expecting for years, as the top of the Republican ticket is even worse than the provincial locals.

Look at the rhetoric around abortion last month by those aspiring to the Republican presidential nomination. Although Donald Trump insists he’s never wrong, he had to quickly retract his statement when he suggested abortion should be banned by the states and women who have them illegally should “face some sort of punishment.” Although this is a perfectly logical statement, since people who are caught breaking the law usually do face a consequence, the anti-choice movement knows the public would never forgive the image of desperate women seeking an abortion being thrown into a jail

cell. They prefer to paint a picture of “vulnerable, exploited” women who need to be counseled and kept from hurting themselves rather than women as criminals because they don’t want to carry their rapist’s baby.

The “keep women in their place” anti-choicers apparently dressed down the Donald in private, and he quickly recanted, but the damage was done as his unfavorables among women now reach historic levels, nearing 75 percent.

Ted Cruz also thinks women have no business making their personal health care decisions. He insists Roe v. Wade is not settled and prefers that states make all abortions illegal, even in the case of rape or incest.

He blames “judicial activism” for abortion rights. Cruz thinks the abortion of a pregnancy caused by rape “blames the child” instead of punishing the rapist. He utters the antichoice propaganda perfectly, arguing that “women are victims of abortion.”

Therefore, only the abortion providers should be punished.

As the primary season wears on, it seems likely that these old issues will be driving women, and those who value the rights of women to make their own decisions, to the other side. If the Democrats continue to offer pro-working class policies such as raising the minimum wage to $15 an hour as California did this month, with New York and other Eastern states likely to follow, the old white men of the Republican party may get to keep their ’50s era platform, but they’ll have fewer young people and women with whom to share it.

At a recent political event, I ran into a former elected Republican official who has contributed a great deal to Nevada and is widely respected for his common sense, statesmanlike views. I asked him privately how he intended to vote in November. He looked me in the eye and calmly said “Hillary.”

He didn’t seem at all conflicted about it. Ω

GOP factions struggle for primacy The Washoe County Republican Convention held April 2 exceeded all attendance predictions. So many paid at the door the convention could not start on time as the volunteers worked hard to process them.

Mike Weber did a fantastic job as chairman and kept the convenby Brendan Trainor tion running smoothly. However, an inordinate amount of time was spent on bylaws changes aimed at one person, Gary Schmidt, owner of the Reindeer Lodge on Mount Rose Highway and a long-time curmudgeon who has irritated many a local government body arguing over his property rights.

Gary sued an officer of the Washoe Republican County Central Committee, and the bylaws change was to permanently ban any member of the Central Committee that sues an officer. All this effort to punish one man was tasteless and wasted time.

The social conservatives won the platform battle, and the Washoe Republican Platform will not stand up for individual rights

by replacing laws that punish consensual adult acts with a regulated legalized regime. In fact, the party platform now proclaims that Washoe Republicans want to criminalize even the legal brothels in Nevada, strip clubs and other sex work, and do not support legalized marijuana or gay marriage.

The pro-life planks went on for almost two pages.

Platform chair Kiran Hill, a liberty Republican, tried to run an open process. On the last day of the committee, the social cons presented a minority platform for the convention and then walked out. Hill’s platform was actually a consensus platform, with some social conservative planks and some liberty planks.

There was a strong religious liberty plank in the consensus platform, but the social cons wanted to go beyond the defense of their beliefs from government intrusion and instead impose their beliefs on others, using the police power of the state.

While Hill felt their action was a stab in the back, he acknowledged the social cons did not technically violate the convention process. The convention, perhaps weary of the by-laws fight, approved their motion to cut off debate and passed the social cons’ platform.

Nevada Democrats now have more ammunition to use against Republicans on women’s and gay rights. The sex trafficking issue will depend on how Nevada Democrats respond to the anti-sex worker neofeminists in their own ranks. It will be interesting to see if a bi-partisan coalition could actually threaten the legal prostitution industry in Nevada in 2017.

During the platform committee discussions, I told the social cons that what they were doing would write off the millennial vote. The millennial generation is perhaps the most irreligious, socially tolerant generation in our history, and a political party against gay marriage and marijuana reform is a complete

millennial turn off. Some social cons, like Sharron Angle, deny that reality. But the response I received was that they didn’t care if their policies writes off a generation of voters. One told me, “If that’s true, I would rather the party go down in flames than change this platform.”

Assemblyman Ira Hansen gave a fiery speech, calling out Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval for abandoning Republican principles by passing the commerce tax. U.S. Rep. Mark Amodei, in contrast, gave a rather bland speech calling for unity and repeating the tired refrain that any Republican is better than a Democrat.

The soul of the Republican Party is up for grabs in 2016. The social conservatives, the constitutional conservatives, and all the various factions are in turmoil, with Donald Trump stirring up the witches' brew. Ω

This particular episode of domestic terrorism has roots in Nevada, I’m sorry to say. They were led by the sons of Cliven Bundy—Cliven, who, as we speak, is where he should be, in jail.”

Cliven Bundy and four of his sons face federal conspiracy and weapons indictments growing out of the 2014 standoff with federal officials near Bunkerville over his refusal to pay his bills.

His sons Ammon and Ryan are also charged in connection with a separate incident, the armed occupation of a federal wildlife refuge in Oregon.

The attorney for Ammon Bundy responded with a video that said, in part, “Please try to address the ideas and spend less time making attacks on individuals, particularly individuals you represent.”

And Cliven Bundy’s wife Carol posted a video calling on Reid to visit her at the ranch to “look me square in the eye” and tell her that her husband and sons are domestic terrorists.

Nevadans go party on anti-trust The U.S. House has approved H.R.2745, a measure that allegedly seeks to reconcile separate anti-trust enforcement activities of the U.S. Department of Justice and the Federal Trade Commission, but which consumer advocates say would injure a regulatory process that protects the public. The action came on a nearly party line vote.

Within the Nevada delegation, it was a party line vote— Republican Reps. Mark Amodei, Cresent Hardy and Joe Heck voted for the bill and Democrat Dina Titus voted against.

The White House issued a statement calling the measure unnecessary: “While the process the FTC uses to challenge mergers differs from DOJ’s, there is no evidence that it affects outcomes or prejudices parties. The FTC and DOJ share joint guidelines that set forth a common analytical framework for reviewing mergers.”

Consumers Union and the American Academy of Family Physicians oppose the measure.

Trump did it Smithsonian Magazine’s website is reporting on a “217-millionyear-old murder mystery” at Nevada’s Icthyosaur State Park.

Paleontologists are at the park trying to determine why the bones of about 40 icthyosaurs are at the single site, similar to a Cerro Ballena, Chile, grouping of the seagoing mammals.

Until now, “Some sort of deadly algae bloom seemed like a ICHTHYOSAUR STATE PARK good candidate,” the magazine reports. “And more recently, one researcher jumped into the deep end of speculation to suggest the ichthyosaurs had been killed by an enormous squid, which carefully arranged the bones in its lair. All the while, the true story of what happened has remained in the rock.”

“We have some good preliminary clues and ideas ... but we are still actively debating and discussing this and still investigating the date,” said National Museum of Natural History paleontologist Neil Kelley.

Enemy at the gateway Locals battle campus sprawl In May 1903, a small, poorly-tended reservoir on the grounds of Nevada State University at the corner of by Ninth and Center streets came Dennis Myers apart. Water rushed down the hill and flooded homes in the neighborhood.

Something similar is going on now. University of Nevada, Reno, agents have fanned out in the neighborhood, buying the 19th century homes they once flooded, to expand the campus to Interstate 80. Some local residents are trying to stop them.

“It’s one of the only nearly intact rows of pre-1900 homes in Reno,” said Debbie Hinman, who wrote an account of the neighborhood history for Footprints, the publication of the Historic Reno Preservation Society.

“There are some over in the Elko and Eureka street neighborhood, but we don’t have a lot of 1890s homes sitting around, all in a row like

that.” Most of the homes are built in a Queen Anne style.

The homes were familiar landmarks for generations of students. For those in the 1960s and ’70s, for instance, one home with a tower recalls the years when a large poster of W.C. Fields was displayed in a window of the tower. The tower and poster were photographed many times, appearing in the campus newspaper and yearbook.

Elsewhere in the neighborhood, tales of the past attest to its place in city history A home on Eighth Street between Center and Lake is reachable only by a footpath. It was the home of Frances Humphrey, a well known local educator and counselor. She lived there from her birth to her death. Other houses in the area were homes to Sen. Thomas “Spike” Wilson, the Ferris family (George Washington Gale Ferris invented the Ferris wheel), and Nevada State Veterinarian Winfred Mack. Mack also worked at the university. In fact, most of the homes have university connections.

“Most of them, people who lived there, were connected to the university, so it was a true university neighborhood,” Hinman said.

In a home on Lake Street, there

lived a woman who saw her children leaving her one by one. When a son went to California to buy himself a wedding suit, she doused herself with kerosene, strapped herself to her bed with baling wire, and set herself on fire. She perished, but the home survived and Reno Mayor Edwin Roberts and his wife later lived there.

A campus plan for the neighborhood—which UNR calls the Gateway Project—shows tall buildings and a bus station. “This vibrant retail- and academicoriented neighborhood center will be developed primarily by the university and will extend campus life to the south of the current campus, in the area between campus and I-80,” reads a campus publicity document on the project.

A campus “strategic plan” reads, “Planning for the Gateway Project is a collaborative effort with the City of Reno and the Regional Transportation Commission. It is proposed to involve closure of Center and Lake Streets between 8th and 9th streets and routing traffic towards the Virginia Street corridor. We will explore the possibility of constructing an academic facility, such as a College of Business complex. The Gateway Project will also likely include student housing for upperclassmen and outdoor recreational fields.”

Context Opponents of the project will take their concerns to the Reno City Council next month, but they may be acting too late. The project has been under way for many years (“More redevelopment” RN&R, Oct. 15, 2009), and the city council signed onto an early iteration of it.

Moreover, UNR has acquired all but one property on the Center Street corridor.

Local figures who deal with the city council on a regular basis say they suspect the campus has the upper hand.

“They [residents] have a lot of chutzpah, but—,” said one, his voice trailing off.

“They’re the Owens Valley and the university is Los Angeles,” said another. “They needed to figure out what was happening a lot earlier.”

Nevertheless, City Councilmember Jenny Brekhus said, “They [the homes in the neighborhood] have so much meaning and context to the area. I mean,

But the opponents of the Center/ Lake street plan also face the influence of the Reno Gazette-Journal, which has been pushing its own

we just went on a college tour and went to Pasadena. Like, Cal Tech’s admission and financial aid office is an old Grecian mansion, you know? It is the context. It is built into the fabric. … It’s just mind blowing that we are not realizing that preservation is part of the mix of a successful community.”

She also questioned the impact of the campus plans on traffic, in an interview taped on April 2 at UNR. “I was here last night [at the campus] and I-80’s backed up. It could be something to do with the basketball game!” she joked.

Nearby residents in the area have long been critics of the way the city tolerates campus policies that they would not tolerate from businesses—lack of parking, for example. And they say they want the campus to grow up, not out—and if it has to grow out, to do it to the north, where expansion costs are less and do not break up longstanding neighborhoods.

Some of them—and the critics of the Center/Lake street plan—want the city to hold onto the park between Lake and Center, not give it up to the campus. UNR documents suggest that university officials already consider the park

“town/gown” plans to make Reno a university town, a notion that was also supported by some past city councils.

“There is an avenue for the university to meet its growth needs,” Brekhus said. “But I don’t think that losing these buildings, which are really well-documented in the relationship [to the campus], is the way to do it.” Ω

Smoke signals Will a wet winter bring a fiery summer?

A wetter-than-average winter and spring are helping to ease drought conditions across the Great Basin. However, an active fire season may now be on the horizon, according to meteorologist Gina McGuire of the Great by Kelsey Basin Geographic Area Coordination Center. McGuire, who spoke at Fitzgerald the Desert Research Institute in Reno in early April as part of the Great Basin Climate Forum, studies fire weather—specifically, the effects of drought and recent precipitation on the upcoming wildfire season.

The relationship between precipitation and wildfires is somewhat complicated, says McGuire. In the Great Basin, wet conditions during winter and early spring can lead to increases in the growth of fine fuels such as shrubs, native grasses, and an invasive grass called cheatgrass, which can increase fire risk later in the season.

“In the Great Basin, when we get a lot of rain, things green up,” McGuire said. “April showers bring May flowers. It also brings a lot of cheatgrass. It brings a lot of grass to the Great Basin, which is a lot of fuel to burn.”

For the past few years, drought conditions may have actually helped to decrease wildfire activity in our region. Although drought causes heavy fuels such as dead trees to dry out and become more flammable, droughts also tend to reduce the growth of shrubs and grasses that spread wildfires.

“Precipitation is not only important with how much we get, but it’s important when that occurs,” McGuire said. “If it occurs in the spring, we’re going to get a lot of growth. If it occurs in July and August, we’re not going to get a lot of wildfires because it’s going to be too wet.”

In 2015, for example, a very wet July on top of the ongoing drought helped to keep the Great Basin’s summer wildfire season to a minimum. According to data from the Great Basin Geographic Area Coordination Center, wildfires on average burn approximately 1.1 million acres of the Great Basin each year. In 2015, just over 500,000 acres burned. Nevada had an especially light fire season, in which only 42,279 acres burned—down from 59,377 acres in 2014, and 162,841 acres in 2013.

So, what might we expect to see in 2016? “It looks like we’re going to have a really wet April,” McGuire said. “That’s probably going to promote a little bit more grass growth. Right now the focus for an above-normal fire season would be Southern Nevada for June, the western and northern parts of Nevada for July and August, and the higher elevations of the Sierra Nevada as we move into August.” Ω

lot has been written about e-cigarettes—or “vapes” as they’re known these days—since they first appeared on store shelves in the U.S. during the mid-2000s. A Google search for “e-cigarettes” comes back with nearly 16 million results, including abstracts for scientific studies, advertisements from sellers, blog posts by users, and newspaper and magazine articles. From the small, local daily papers to big, national publications like Rolling Stone—everyone’s had something to say or some question to pose about vaping at some point during the last 10 years. Common themes range from the potential health risks or benefits to predictions for future regulations on this currently largely unregulated industry. (It wasn’t until the 2015 legislative session that Nevada enacted a law via Senate Bill 225 to bar businesses from selling vaping devices and e-liquids to minors.)

Much remains to be seen about vaping, and there’s not a lot of consensus to be found among the public, or even the scientific community. And the media doesn’t help things with its proclivity toward hype and hyperbole, alternately proclaiming with breakneck speed the undeniable detriments or advantages of vaping. But in the meantime, the vaping industry continues to grow rapidly around nation and in the Truckee Meadows. Along with it, a vibrant subculture—unknown even to many vape users—is growing too.

In the spirit of full disclosure, I should mention that I’m one of those vape users who was unaware of emerging vape culture. (In a 2015 report, the CDC estimated that as of 2014 nearly four percent of U.S. adults regularly used vapes.)

I finally committed to switching to e-cigs a few years ago after nearly a decade of smoking. I tried them in the early days when short-lived versions that ostensibly looked and felt like the real deal (called cig-alikes) still ruled the market and the 12 | RN&R |

first generation of “vape pens”—the long, cylindrical ones with tanks for the nicotine-laced liquid—sold for more than $100 dollars and leaked like a sieve. By the time I switched for good, the technology was in its second or third generation and had finally come far enough to provide me with a satisfying alternative to real cigarettes. Also, the price had come down significantly—in part, I suspect, because vape pens were already becoming old hat as more committed vape users began moving on to larger, more powerful, box-looking devices called “mods.”

Mods work in much the same way as vape pens—both rely on a battery to engage a cotton-wrapped coil that heats the e-liquid (usually made from propylene glycol, glycerin, water, nicotine, and flavoring) into an inhalable aerosol or mist. But mods are much more powerful and thus yield a larger cloud of vapor. And the vaping subculture revolves around mods.

I set out to visit local shops to get a better feel for that culture. To make my quest for knowledge a manageable

task, I decided to visit only stores that specialize in vapes and skipped the ones that also sell cigarettes and other tobacco products. In all, I spent time at 15 vape shops, where I learned more about everything from industry standards for e-liquids and equipment to the importance of vape shop environments and events. (As a side note, I’ve little doubt I missed some stores and that new ones will have opened before the paper goes to press.)

E-liquids At Slushee’s Vapor Headquarters, 2005 Sierra Highlands Drive, owners and spouses Kenneth and Jacquelyn Webster were among the first to start selling their own line of e-liquid—which cognitive and brain sciences Ph.D. candidate Jacquelyn decided to learn how to make in late 2013 after meeting an e-cig vendor while in England for a school-related conference.

“He taught me all about it and told me everything, and he was very informative,” she said. “And I bought my first e-cigarette from him. …

And when I got back to the states, I couldn’t find a juice [e-liquid] that didn’t have, like, additives or sucralose or ethyl alcohol or things that I knew—like artificial sweeteners—things that I didn’t want to be vaping. I couldn’t find a clean vape.

So I researched it and figured out how to make it on my own. And then people started wanting it.”

In August 2014, the Websters turned it into a business, which has since expanded to include a wide variety of vaping hardware and e-liquids from other manufacturers. Webster

explained that e-liquid manufacturing in the United States has grown rapidly over the last few years to meet the demand for USA-made products that satisfy vape users’ desire for what she calls a “clean vape.”

These days, it’s a point of pride among vape shops to offer only e-liquids made in the United States.

On a visit to School of Vape, 580 E. Plumb Lane, I learned why from general manager, Nathan Evans.

“We only sell premium e-juice that’s made in an ISO-7 or higher lab,” Evans said. “We don’t sell anything that’s not made in the USA … and we do not sell any juice that contains diacetyl.”

ISO stands for International Organization for Standardization. It’s a non-governmental body comprised of people from 164 member countries who come together to develop voluntary standards for various industries, including manufacturing.

An ISO rating for a lab is basically an accreditation level it receives based on technical competency and cleanliness.

The diacetyl to which Evans referred is an organic compound with a buttery flavor. It’s added to some foods and has been linked to “popcorn worker’s lung” or “flavorings-related lung disease.” It’s also present in small amounts in some sweeter, dessertflavored e-liquids. According to Evans, it has become an increasingly serious concern for vape users over the last few years and, in response, a lot of e-liquid manufacturers are reformulated their products to omit the ingredient.

The fear of afflictions like popcorn lung and also growing popular demand from brand-loyal customers has led many local shops to follow

in the Websters’ footsteps by creating house lines of e-liquid. In fact, the majority of the shops I visited offer an exclusive line—many with the option to create personalized flavors. All of the lines are advertised as “lab-made.”

At Slushee’s, the Websters have started receiving their own brand of e-liquid, complete with slick new labels, from a lab in California.

One of the newest shops in town, Midtown Vape, 600 S. Virginia St., is predictably Midtown hip with clean, Spartan décor, high vaulted ceilings and a house line of e-liquid in long squeezable bottles featuring names like Hidden Dragon, Basic B and Wolf.

Over on the west end of town is another newcomer to the vape scene. Mathew Gibbs opened Lord Vapor, 9570 S. McCarran Blvd., in September 2015. In addition to Star Wars memorabilia, the shop offers custom vinyl stickers for mods and a house line of e-liquids with movie references built into the names, including a tobacco and bourbon flavor called He Shot First and a tobacco and menthol flavor called Force Choke.

“The way I’ve been running it is, I come up with flavors,” Gibbs said. “And while we’re in the process of designing labels for flavors that we think our customers are going to like, we actually manufacture some of those potential flavors [by commissioning it from the lab he uses], and we place them out here for our customers to kind of give us a baseline—if they like certain stuff or they want to change certain stuff—so we can kind of customize our juices to our customers’ specific profiles without having to do an individual juice for every individual person. And I do custom orders.”

Just up the street, 775 Vapes, 10310 N. McCarran Blvd., displays all of its e-liquid flavors on a bank of flat screen TVs behind the counter. In addition to the roughly 70 flavors of house e-liquid, customers can request their own flavor concoctions.

EnvironmEnt When it comes to vape stores, the environment—from furnishings to art—is frequently as much a defining factor as the e-liquids and equipment offered. Some stores boast a loungy feel with couches and video game consoles. Others pride themselves on a clean, professional space. But perhaps the most distinctive stores are the ones that began as something entirely different and still bear the trappings of their initial purpose. Open Box Outlet, 219 Baring Blvd., is one of those.

Like several of the more established shops, Open Box Outlet, 219 Baring Blvd., has multiple storefronts, but the first was the Baring Boulevard location. Glenn Pitts opened the store in September 2012 with the intention of selling a little bit of everything.

While the store still offers a random sampling of things, from skateboards to large area rugs, the main focus is on

e-cigarettes, which Pitts started selling early in 2013.

“I think we went to a show in Vegas, and we decided to pick it up from there,” Pitts said. “And from there, it just exploded. When we started, there was only really two other stores—the little Computer Extreme store and Sierra Smoke.”

Open Box Outlet also carries some of the local e-liquid lines from other stores that Pitts helped get off the ground, including Slushee’s Vapor Headquarters and Lord Vapor.

Another of Pitt’s projects is Biggest Little Vape Shop, 1530 S. Stanford Way, of which he is co-owner. Unlike Open Box Outlet, the store was opened with vaping in

mind and has design elements that fit with its location in the industrial neighborhood of Sparks.

“It’s a really clean looking shop,” Pitts said. “It was brand new. We were able to build it out, so we built it out exactly how we wanted it. … It was a shell of a place, and it just had dirt on the floor. We were able to design exactly what we wanted, exactly how we wanted it. We did a gloss floor instead of like carpeting and stuff.”

As with so many of the local vape shops, it’s arguable whether the highlight of the Reno Vapor Emporium, 2303 S. Virginia St., is the e-liquid lines carried there—including one the store touts as certified organic and kosher—or the environment the shop

maintains. Reno Vapor Emporium is conspicuously vapor cloud-free, a circumstance that manager Molly Rosen explained is quite purposeful.

“We try not to have it all clouded up all the time—make it so that people wandering in off the street that maybe want to try vaping out aren’t intimidated,” she said. “Because sometimes vape culture is kind of like, ‘Oh, no!’

It’s kind of scary, especially if you’re like, you know, grandma wants to start vaping. So we try to be inviting no matter who you are.”

Another standout in environment was The Vapory Reno, 1300 E. Plumb Lane, which is now closed, although its other location at 216 N. Arlington Ave. is still open. It had an island

vibe thanks to its large wall murals, fish tank, and an e-liquid line from Honolulu, Hawaii called Aloha Vapor.

Canyon Vapes, 626 Victorian Ave., boasts a different type of wall embellishment that sets it apart. It's been signed by dozens of customers who’ve quit smoking cigarettes by using vapes.

“We’re more of a mom-and-pop shop rather than trying to get money and stuff like that,” said store manager Justin Neel. “We’re here to actually help people quit smoking. If we can help you quit smoking and quit these—that’s our goal, actually.

EquipmEnt In some respects, vaping equipment trumps all of the other elements of vape culture from e-liquids to vape store ambiance. It can be expensive, for one thing, with prices ranging from less than $20 up to several hundred. And advances in vape technology continually provide more durable and reliable hardware, and the regular influx of upgraded products helps drive the industry forward.

All of the local vape shops offer pretty much the same options for vape pens and mods, but some place particular importance on their equipment selection. Take, for example, Daisy Mae’s Vape Shop, 1115 Rock

Another popular piece of vaping hardware that can be found in any store is the re-buildable dripping atomizer (RDA) often preferred by vape users with mods. RDAs allow users to build custom coils to heat the e-liquid they’re using, and several shops specialize in custom coil building. Among them is Knuckle Dusters Vape Shop, 1100 E. Plumb Lane, where co-owner Richard Price keeps a work bench complete with ohm meter and power drill for custom jobs.

Many of the local shops offer custom built coils, but that’s not the case at Black Rock Vapor, 664 E. Prater Way. “We don’t do builds here,” said co-owner Kimi Lafinier.

“We don’t want the liability and the problems that go with that, but we sell everything to build for yourself.”

It’s a justifiable concern considering that mistakes made by the person who builds the coils or the person who uses them can unintentionally introduce faults into the system that can pose serious safety risks. Still, the potential for larger vapor clouds and increased flavor purity create a large demand for custom coils, and many local shops pride themselves on safe building practices.

EvEnts An aspect of vape culture that goes hand in hand with top-of-the-line equipment and customization is vape shop events. These are draws for users who embrace vaping as a hobby, not just a tobacco alternative. The most common type of event is the cloud competition, or just cloud comp—a contest for mod users to see who can blow the largest cloud of vapor.

Cloud comps are a big deal in the vaping community. And with the potential for expensive prizes, they’re more than just a meet-and-greet opportunity. On April 3, Nevada Vapor, 770 S. Meadows Parkway, held a coil art and cloud competition during

which the store gave away full-sized bottles of e-liquids and a variety of vaping equipment and other swag to participants.

“Has anyone not gotten something yet?” co-owner Natasha Supancheck asked at the conclusion of the event, moving around the room to offer spectators their choice of e-liquid bottles from a small box.

Cloud competitions and product giveaways are not just a local phenomenon either. The World Series of Cloud Chasing—billed as the world’s largest cloud competition—is being held in the UK this year. According the website, there’s a “prize pool in excess of $100,000.”

At The Vapor Stop, 1200 Rock Blvd., co-owners and husband-wifeteam Jason and Becky Cowles are preparing for Becky’s departure to compete in the WSOCC in August. By then, she will have graduated with her degree in nursing and The Vapor Stop will have moved to its new location at 2161 Pyramid Way. Becky is excited to go but makes one thing clear—the appeal is in more than the promise of prizes. She also appreciates the sense of camaraderie members of the vaping community get from events.

Local schools and arts organizations celebrate the life and death of William Shakespeare

et out your party hats and raise a cup of mead. April 23 is believed to be the date of both the birth and death of William Shakespeare, who is credited with introducing nearly 3,000 words to the English language and having written at least 37 plays, 154 sonnets, and a number of other poems. This April marks the 400th anniversary of his death in 1616.

Surely if any city ought to be marking this occasion in grand style, it’s Reno. After all, it’s home to Eric Rasmussen, chair of the University of Nevada, Reno English Department and one of the world’s preeminent Shakespeare scholars.

In fall of 2014, as Rasmussen and his wife, Victoria Hines, were discussing ways to commemorate this “death-iversary,” they came up with an idea for a citywide festival and dubbed it WillPower 2016.

“We had this huge occasion and we thought, ‘Wouldn’t it be great to get the whole community together to rally around this concept and have a festival?’” Hines said. “It just seemed the stars were aligning.”

One of their goals was to bring different parts of the community, including the university, local arts organizations, and the school system, together to collaborate and support one another, with Shakespeare as their shared territory.

WillPower 2016 could be a groundswell of events that begin in April and run through September— perhaps, ideally, all 37 plays?

In March 2015, Hines filed nonprofit paperwork to establish the Northern Nevada Cultural Coalition, an umbrella organization focused on bridging those gaps between arts organizations, the university, K-12

schools and the community at large.

WillPower 2016 would be its kickoff event—hopefully the first of many such efforts.

She and Rasmussen assembled a board of volunteers from around the community, and together they began brainstorming ways participating groups could get involved in WillPower. Rasmussen recruited Ian De Jong, a Ph.D. student in the English program whose study emphasis is Shakespeare, as an executive board member who would serve as a university liaison in event planning.

“The next step was getting community support,” said De Jong.

“It was a bit challenging to convince people that it was something worth doing. But it’s paid off. There are some exciting things happening that wouldn’t have happened without WillPower and inspiration from Eric and Victoria.”

All the world’s A stAge WillPower’s effort to “Bring the Bard to Our Backyard” has not necessarily targeted traditional Shakespearean productions.

“It’s about what Shakespeare means to us today,” said Hines. “There are a lot of interpretations out there, and we love that.”

What’s resulted is an alreadyimpressive roster of local events: Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival will produce of The Comedy of Errors at Sand Harbor, running in July and August. (www.laketahoeshakespeare.org/) Joe Atack, education director for the Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival, directs Goodluck

Macbeth’s King Lear, running April 22-May 21. Atack’s interpretation takes us to 16th century Russia and the reign of Ivan the Terrible.

GLM will convert its space into a dark, cavernous winter wasteland complete with lowered temperatures and manufactured snow. Talkbacks and lectures from knowledgeable scholars will take place throughout the run, and period costumes and treasures will be displayed. (www. goodluckmacbeth.org) In April and May, Brüka Theatre will present Lambs’ Tales, four staged readings of Charles and Mary Lamb’s Tales From Shakespeare, which are children’s prose adaptations of Shakespeare’s work. The annual Brüka Prom on May 21 will be themed as a Shakespearean ball. (www.bruka.org) Running now through April 24 is Lee Blessing’s Fortinbras, a comedic “sequel” to Hamlet, at Reno Little Theater. (www.renolittletheater.org) On Saturday, July 30 at Wingfield Park, the Reno Jazz Orchestra will offer a free performance of Duke Ellington’s Such Sweet Thunder, a 12-part suite based on the work of William Shakespeare.

On May 15 and 20, vocal ensemble Bella Voce will present Poets: Great and Small, a free concert featuring a trilogy of songs based on three of Shakespeare’s sonnets; a song based on a poem by Christopher Marlowe entitled “The Shepherd to His Love”; and a song called “Ban, Ban, Caliban,” a drinking song from the tempest. (www.bellavocereno. com/) The UNR library’s Special Collections & University Archives department will host a display of important items pertaining to the work of Shakespeare in Nevada, including an original folio copy of The Merchant of Venice.

Wooster, North Valleys and Hug high schools will all produce plays by Shakespeare.

De Jong has helped arrange several other events on campus, including an April 7 screening of the film Macbeth, as well as an early April undergraduate field trip to the Oregon Shakespeare Festival.

He’s currently hard at work establishing a week-long Shakespearethemed summer camp for area high-schoolers.

“We want to show high-schoolers that Shakespeare can be enjoyable and stimulating,” De Jong said. “His work pushes me, challenges me. It’s not so easy to get your hands around it, but when you do, it’s worth it. And we want to share that with a wide range of people.”

When the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, D.C. announced that it would send the First Folio of Shakespeare’s plays on a national tour of all 50 states as part of the 400th anniversary, Rasmussen was instrumental in securing an offer for the Nevada Museum of Art to host the folio. However, the NMA was forced to decline.

“The Nevada Museum of Art mounts nearly 30 art exhibitions each year,” said Ann Wolfe, senior curator and deputy director at NMA. “Given the short one-month duration requirement for the exhibition, and that the exhibition design was better suited for a library setting, we could not accommodate Shakespeare’s First Folio in 2016.”

Instead, the folio will head south to the University of Nevada, Las Vegas for the month of September.

Nonetheless, Rasmussen and Hines are thrilled by what the Biggest Little City will have to offer.

“As the world commemorates Shakespeare’s death-iversary with major theatrical events in London and New York, the fact that Reno through WillPower is asserting its deserved status as a significant and thriving cultural and theatrical community is absolutely brilliant,” said Rasmussen.

Just as WillPower 2016 starts revving up, Hines is transitioning to a new job in the Bay Area. Although she and Rasmussen will remain on the NNCC board, she will step down as executive director. The NNCC is looking for someone new to take her place, and it’s seeking other organizations and individuals who can throw their hats in the ring as WillPower participants.

Hines says that in the earliest brainstorming stages, many ideas were offered up that had great potential and still have no takers—a Shakespeare crawl, a Burning Man Shakespeare community, a beer-brewing competition with Renaissance lagers—and there are likely dozens more for any interested business or organization.

“It’s still open for evolution,” she said. “There’s so much energy associated with this, but we need somebody to keep shopping those ideas and find people interested in participating.”

After all, it’s already mid-April.

As the Bard himself once wrote, “And summer’s lease hath all too short a date.” Ω

Easy being Green Day American Idiot The timing couldn’t be better for Truckee Meadows Community College by Performing Arts’ production of Green Jessica Santina Day’s rock opera, American Idiot.

With the animosity in today’s political climate, the fear of the Middle East, the outsized control of the media, and the unbelievable popularity of an ignorant bully bent on American authoritarianism, it’s almost like we’re back in 2004, when Green Day was recording the album of teenage angst that became this stage production’s namesake.

TMCC’s energetic—dare I say chaotic—production is every bit as angsty as the members of the punk rock band would have wanted.

Following the story suggested by the lyrics of the album, this rock opera is the story of Johnny (“Jesus of Suburbia”), who has grown up in a dull small town (“Jingletown USA”), in the midst of America’s burgeoning obsession with media violence, commercialism and 10-second soundbytes, resulting in generational malaise and confusion.

Johnny (played by Joe Jackson) and his buddies Tunny (Clinton Swaim) and Will (Jesse Green) are ready to kick off the dust and leave for the “big city.” Seduction and descent into madness play out for all three young men.

Will has knocked up his girlfriend, Heather (Addie Eykelbosh), and is now stuck at home while his two pals set off for very different lives. Johnny is seduced by sex, drugs and rock ’n’ roll, as peddled by his alter ego “St.

Jimmy” (Kiba Walker). Meanwhile, Tunny is seduced by the patriotic images he sees on TV and enlists so he can go off to war.

As Will descends into a drunken stupor over his unexpected fatherhood, Johnny descends further into his own heroin-induced stupor, and Tunny winds up in the hospital, delirious over the loss of his leg. All three men finally have to hit bottom in their respective relationships—Will with Heather, Johnny with “Whatsher-name” (Bethany Mindrum) and Tunny with his nurse, Extraordinary Girl (Hayley Lightfoot)—and with their own feelings of self-worth before finally turning things around and coming home.

But the plot is a delicate wisp of a thing and is probably the least interesting or important thing about the show—that and the characters, who are shadows of people, utterly lacking development or any relatability. Aside from what’s sung in the album’s songs—including hits such as “Wake Me Up When September Ends” and “Boulevard of Broken Dreams”—the spoken dialogue is likely about a paragraph long. Very little political comment shows to the unenlightened viewer. The script seems to think it’s deeper than it is.

Not quite a play and not quite a Green Day concert, American Idiot is 90 minutes of uninterrupted sound and fury, intermingled with impressive lighting and multimedia effects, breathtakingly good choreography by Mig O’Hara and nonstop jamming from musical director Ted Owens and his bad-ass band.

I must applaud silk choreographer Anastasia Bobadilla for a seriously jaw-dropping aerial routine performed

by Lightfoot, Swaim and two members of the ensemble cast (names not provided in program).

Vocally, the strongest performances were by leads Joe Jackson and the Kiba Walker (as a Ziggy Stardust-inspired St. Jimmy). Some other performances fell short, primarily by the female leads who had fierce competition with the music.

Sharp, insightful commentary on the restlessness of disaffected youth, American Idiot is not. But a fun 90-minute orgy of spectacular dancing, visuals and music? Absolutely. Ω

Voodoo lounge Sassafras Eclectic Food Joint 1500 Old Hot Springs Road, Carson City, 884-4471 Sassafras is a tree—the leaves of which are used to make filé powder—which in turn is the zesty thickening agent by Todd South used in the cooking of Louisiana Creole gumbo. The decor at Sassafras Eclectic Food Joint is replete with colorful “sugar skull” artwork, perhaps intended to evoke a New Orleans voodoo vibe. There is a full stage and dance floor for live music, and plenty of beer and cocktail options on the requisite chalkboard menus.

What to order with your bread and cheese? More bread and cheese, specifically a cheesesteak grinder ($10) with sweet and hot peppers, onion, mushroom, provolone and pepperjack, melted together and practically falling out of a large sourdough roll with fresh pickle on the side. Though the meat had good flavor, it was a little chewy.

The veggies were well grilled, and I can’t remember the last time I saw a sandwich with that much cheese.

Doubling down on the fromage, a side of blue cheese slaw completed the dish and was a tasty treat.

From the specials menu I selected the cottage pie of the day with house salad ($17). A small ceramic baking dish was filled with housemade chorizo gravy, carrot, green pea and smoked turkey, topped with a mix of mashed potato and cheese, which was lightly browned and slightly crispy on top. I enjoyed it, though the applewood-smoked turkey almost overpowered the dish. Taking things down a notch, the salad with serrano vinaigrette featured a very nice assemblage of fresh carrot, jicama, green bean, white corn, cucumber, tomato and spring mix, but I couldn’t detect much in the way of dressing.

There was absolutely no sense of serrano pepper, so perhaps a miscommunication in the kitchen?

A small “El Guapo” pizza was shared by the table, topped with housemade chorizo, smoked chicken, roma tomato, serrano pesto and plenty of mozzarella ($13). The crust was thin and crispy, and on first taste the powerful combination of flavors worked quite well. Though generally a fan of smoked meats, after a slice or two my palate was overwhelmed—the chicken was even more powerfully smoky than the pie’s turkey. I tried to quench the stench with a sip of bourbon, but it just made the whiskey taste like I’d ordered a peaty scotch. If you really, really love smoked meat, these folks have what you’re looking for.

I’m not usually big on desserts, but I couldn’t resist the strawberryrhubarb cobbler a la mode ($8). The tart rhubarb and sweet strawberry goo was topped by a biscuity crust and scoop of vanilla ice cream. It was the perfect end to an evening of bold flavors and festive surroundings. Ω

As for food, there is a full menu of starters, cold deli sandwiches, salads, pizzas, hot grinders and burgers. There’s also a two-page menu of specials to choose from, and yet a few more daily specials your server will tell you about. We ordered plenty of food and still didn’t make a dent in their collection of more than 70 items to choose from.

Our order of “Eviled Eggs” ($6) earned their name by presentation alone. Three boiled egg halves were amply stuffed with a very smooth and delicious blend of cooked egg yolk, smoked paprika and roasted pepper, topped with spicy shrimp and garnished with two sticks of jicama—essentially a deviled egg complete with horns. A fresh pickle of carrot and cucumber was included on the side, both very tart and flavorful.

Not to be outdone, the “Superfraggacheesalicious Loaf” ($10) also lived up to its name. A sourdough round is stuffed with roasted garlic and a combination of cheeses, then baked long enough to become a gooey, garlicky delight.

Served with garlic ranch dipping sauce, my wife loved this appetizer so much I thought she was going to leave me and run away with it.

Midnight Special Writer-director Jeff Nichols (Take Shelter, Mud) has named his latest film, about a boy with special powers running from a Texas cult, Midnight Special. To me, the title alone is a stroke of genius.

Creedence Clearwater Revival’s cover of “Midnight Special” was featured in Twilight Zone: The Movie back in 1983. Whenever by I hear that song, or even see the title, I'm Bob Grimm reminded of that song and movie, both of which hold a special place in my heart. b g ri m m @ ne w s re v i e w . c o m I walked into Midnight Special in an ’80s sort of mood. Whether or not Nichols named his film with Twilight Zone in mind doesn’t really matter. The title had me thinking of Dan Aykroyd attacking Albert Brooks in a parked car at night on a country road, as he so memorably did in that film.

The movie itself feels like a product of the late ’70s and early ’80s, a time when the likes of Spielberg and Scorsese were going full throttle and turning out some of their best stuff. It also works like a really cool episode of The Twilight Zone.

Other filmmakers, like J.J. Abrams with his muddled Super 8, have tried to evoke a Spielberg vibe and wound up ripping him off. Nichols has made a film that can stand proudly alongside the best of Spielberg. It’s an interesting homage while also coming off as smart and original.

It’s also a very entertaining journey.

Michael Shannon, who has appeared in all of Nichols’ films, plays Roy, father to young Alton (Jaeden Lieberher), a mysterious boy who must wear goggles all of the time due to fits where his eyes shoot out blinding light. He has the power to down satellites, to channel radio broadcasts, and to transmit military secrets. So, yeah, the government is after him, and the Texas cult he grew up within sees him as some sort of prophet.

Roy takes Alton away from the cult, led by the forever haggard Sam Shepard, races towards some undetermined location, because he knows his boy is important and that mystery meeting with something or other is important. Nichols cleverly keeps much of his movie shrouded in mystery, with some questions never getting clear-cut answers. Movies that spell everything out for you can be very boring.

The film has elements of Duel, E.T. and Close Encounters of the Third Kind on the Spielberg front, with the mystery and wonder of the best Twilight Zones. It also has the look and feel of some of Clint Eastwood’s best offerings, the dramatic intensity of Scorsese films, and even the better aspects of last year’s poorly received Tomorrowland.

And, yet, it feels very original.

Shannon is typically strong as the worried yet emotionally closedoff father who doesn’t have all of the answers but will do everything he can to help his son.

Joel Edgerton gives his best performance to date as Lucas (yep … a George Lucas homage), a former state trooper along for the ride.

Kirsten Dunst plays Alton’s mysterious birth mother. There’s also Adam Driver as the sympathetic government guy (think Peter Coyote in E.T.) in full nerd mode, doing much to make us forget that sinister villain he played in that little indie film that came out last year.

Nichols is, quite simply, one of the finest directors making movies today. If you haven’t seen Take Shelter or Mud, and consider yourself a film connoisseur, then get on it. This film is perhaps a notch below those two movies, but that’s not saying it isn’t an entertaining and satisfying experience. That’s just saying he’s made three great movies and this is perhaps the least great of them. OK, I think that made sense.

I’ve read about some people saying Nichols botches his films in the third act.

That’s a bunch of crap. The third act in his films is always exciting or mind blowing, and this one is no exception.

Midnight Special is an example of a great director stretching his wings and hitting his marks impressively. It’s also the first of two Nichols movies (the other is Loving, also starring Edgerton) that will be released this year. That’s a movie year to be excited about. Ω

Baskin

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice

This is definitive proof that director Zack Snyder should be banned from the DC universe. The man who gave us Sucker Punch has effectively knocked the wind out of two great comic book heroes. Affleck could be a fine Batman. Actually, he could be a great Batman.

But, like George Clooney before him, he winds up looking quite ridiculous running around in a messy movie in which his character simply doesn’t fit. A nice effort by Affleck to portray a nuanced, older, somewhat weary Bruce Wayne.

As for Henry Cavill’s Superman, I’m longing for those short-lived days of Brandon Routh as Kal-el. While it isn’t entirely his fault, Cavill’s Supes is officially a dud. A sequel to the dreary Man of Steel, also directed by Snyder, Batman v Superman is a soulless step in the wrong direction. Snyder, who made a great graphic novel movie with Watchmen, has just completely lost the ability to put together a cohesive, exciting movie. It’s sad that somebody can’t make an entertaining movie with two DC classic superheroes, but that’s exactly what Snyder has done. He’s completely failed the fanbase, and he needs to be stopped.

Deadpool

Ryan Reynolds scores big in this twisted film from first time director Tim Miller. The movie establishes its weirdness with scathing opening credits that poke fun at Reynolds’s stint as Green Lantern. It then becomes a consistently funny tragicomedy involving Wade, a mercenary who comes down with terminal cancer, dimming the lights on his future with girlfriend Vanessa (Morena Baccarin). He submits himself to an experiment that leaves him disfigured yet superhuman, bent on revenge against the criminal who made him this way. Reynolds finally gets a good movie to match his charms, and Deadpool gets the nasty film the character beckons for.

The film gets an R-rating for many reasons, and there was no other way to make a Deadpool film.

It needed to be depraved, and it is.

Eye in the Sky

A drone pilot (Aaron Paul) has a missile shot all lined up and is about to pull the trigger on a houseful of terrorists when a little girl parks herself within the blast zone to sell some bread. This is just one of the dilemmas brilliantly depicted in writer-director Gavin Hood’s tense thriller about drone warfare and the political ramifications of collateral damage. Helen Mirren is superb as Colonel Katherine Powell, determined to take out multiple targets on Great Britain’s terrorist list, but needing to check the legalities of all her strategies before she can make a single move. In his last live action screen appearance, Alan Rickman is terrific as Lt. General Frank Benson, drolly responding to the bureaucracy that’s keeping him from doing his job. Paul brings his best big screen acting yet to the role of Steve Watts, a drone commander torn between killing an innocent child or preventing potential scores from being killed in a terrorist bombing. Phoebe Fox gives a breakthrough performance as Carrie Gershon, drone cocommander. The film poses many questions and many dilemmas, and wisely doesn’t take sides. It presents you with the frustrating situations and the consequences, and the viewer is left to mull it all over. This is one of the better-acted films in the first third of 2016.

Sally Field plays the title character, a 60-something office worker who gets a crush on John (Max Greenfield), a much younger co-worker. The two become friendly, and then Doris gets a little carried away into a fantasy world regarding him. Yes, she’s a bit of a stalker, but it’s Sally Field doing the stalking, so it winds up being kind of cute. Directed by Michael Showalter (The Baxter, Wet Hot American Summer), the film mixes goofy comedy with some of a darker variety. Field, who hasn’t had a chance to shine in a comedy in a long while, gives us a multi-dimensional character to go with the laughs. Greenfield is excellent as the object of Doris’ desire, and he actually has a palpable chemistry with Field. You never really know if something might happen between Doris and John, and even though Field is 30 years older, hey, it’s Sally Field. Showalter, who co-wrote the film with Laura Terruso, put together a nice supporting cast including Stephen Root and Tyne Daly. Showalter didn’t get his due with his sweet and funny feature directing debut, The Baxter.

His movies show he can go beyond the realms of outrageous comedies and deliver material with a dramatic oomph—while still managing to be a bit silly.

Hello, My Name is Doris

The horror genre has been getting a nice boost these last couple of years. Well, here’s another one to bolster that argument, but it isn’t for the faint of heart. This one is for those original Hellraiser-loving, Dario Argentofollowing horror fans who want their scares as dismal, dirty and creepy as they can get. Turkish writer-director Can Evrenol goes for the total bloody freak-out and succeeds as a group of cops respond to a call, get in a strange car crash, and wind up going through the doorway to Hell after entering an abandoned building.

While on their way to Hell, they are disemboweled, blinded, forced to do things with masked monsters, and generally not treated well. I can only recommend this movie to the most hardcore of horror fans. It’s as blood-soaked and nightmarish as these things get, and will screw with your mind and your sense of well-being. I have nothing but respect for a movie that can scare the crap out of me like this one did, but it’s probably going to be a while until I dare to watch it again. Damn you, Can Evrenol! (Available for rent on iTunes and Amazon.com during a limited theatrical release.)

It’s still a little early yet, but this is positioned to be one of the year’s biggest cinematic disappointments. The film is an ultimate downer because it contains a powerful central performance from Tom Hiddleston as country music legend Hank Williams. Hiddleston looks, and more importantly, sounds the part, performing live with a strong singing voice and stage persona. When the film focuses on live music and studio performances of Williams’ standards, it shines. It’s when the film examines his life between the songs that it’s a dull, unrewarding experience. Yes, anybody who knows a little bit about the man knows he died tragically young (29) of alcohol and drug-related complications, and that he had a messed-up love life. Come on, though, this is Hank Williams. It’s hard to accept his life was as dull and humorless as writer-director Marc Abraham’s film suggests. Yes, his end was tragic, but the guy must’ve had a sense of humor. Elizabeth Olsen does good work as Audrey Mae Sheppard, Williams’ wife when he got his big break. The same can’t be said for Maddie Hasson as Williams’ next wife, Billie Jean Jones.

Her character feels tacked on. Abraham relies on some of your basic biopic no-nos to move the story along, including the old fake blackand-white newsreel interview gimmick. That’s when you put an actor in a fake interview setting and make it look like a newsreel to give the film authenticity. It’s just proof that the writer was stuck and needed to cheat his way out of self-induced plot ditches. Songs like “Lovesick Blues,” “Honky Tonkin’” and other Williams classics provide interesting interludes, but I Saw the Light will be remembered more for its dullness than its musical numbers.

Dinner parties tend to suck, don’t they? You bring a stupid bottle of wine nobody will like. You have no small talk for others gathering at the table other than the weather and your stinky feet problem. Your hosts may or may not be trying to kill you. Will (Logan Marshall-Green) is visiting his ex-wife, Gina (Michelle Krusiec), for a dinner party.

Gina has been away for some time, and she’s gotten all smiley in the wake of a tragedy she and Will suffered. Her new boyfriend, David (Michiel Huisman), is a bit of a weirdo, all happy and perhaps a bit too pleasant. In contrast to his pleasant demeanor, he shows the party a video of a woman, surrounded by members of some cult, dying by choice. That puts a strange damper on the party, but they all eventually make it to the dinner table, where things get even weirder. Director Karyn Kusama (Jennifer’s Body, Girlfight) does nice work within the scary cult genre, getting good performances from Marshall-Green and John Caroll Lynch as a friend with a sketchy past. There’s a good mystery at play here, with a final act that delivers on the build up. It’s a good ensemble cast in service of a decent script and effective director. Marshall-Green, best known for a supporting role in Prometheus and a couple of TV shows, should find himself getting some decent future work after this one. He’s got some major chops. Pretty sweet Hazz Space often defines our relationships to each other in powerful ways. When we find ourselves inhabiting a space by Kent Irwin between where we came from and where we are going, our consciousness expands. We seek alternate paths, new friendships. We question our old ideals and foundations.

At the age of 12, Harry Collins found himself floating through space.

Having recently immigrated from England, here he was, waiting at a bus stop in Nevada City, California, when along came Austin, a kid in the same grade. Unlike Collins, Austin was native to the area, but was also floating through the nebulous territory of adolescence. The two became fast friends, and soon Austin introduced Collins to his stepbrother, Gabe Cantrell.

“I would tell people, ‘we’re repetitious, but not boring,’” said Collins. “Like Daft Punk, but with actual instruments.”

As Hazz evolved, the dance element remained a part of the band’s DNA, yet they sought to defy easy categorization. Keyboardist and synth player Dez Sharp was added to the lineup. Cantrell was brought back, at first to play the drum machine, then to adapt the beats to a full kit.

Though adamant about translating the stripped-down and catchy appeal of the drum machine, Cantrell considers his approach to drumming less mechanical, and more spirited.

“I’m a very non-metronome guy,” said Cantrell. “I’m not an anti-metronome guy, I’m just more influenced by ’60s drummers—Ringo, Moon.

I like to give a little swing to it.”

This approach to rhythm changed the format of Hazz into something a bit harder to define.

“We often get asked, ‘Who do you like, and who do you sound like?’” said Cantrell. “Those are two different questions. There’s some experimentation, but we’re not an experimental band, not strictly a psychedelic band either. There’s a rawness, but we’re not a punk rock band.”

Disillusioned with traditional genre monikers, Hazz sought other ways to define their sound. One such attempt came in the title of their next EP, Honey. The title was inspired by The Jesus and Mary Chain, who held a similar obsession with the word “honey.” Hazz liked the word too, and felt it was an adequate way to describe their sound.

“It implies sweetness,” said Collins. “Most of our music is pretty sweet. Very melodic, mid-to up-tempo, major chords.”

“It’s sweet,” agreed Cantrell.

“With a little dirt on it.”

It’s this blend of fun, melodic, and catchy pop tunes, with a bit of the grit and passion of punk and psychedelic rock, that defines the sonic voice of Hazz. But what truly focuses Collins is not the notes, but the space between them.

“I believe less is more, so I try to work with that,” said Collins. “It’s not so much about the notes that you play, but more about the ones that you don’t.” Ω

The three became an inseparable trio, encountering the world together as they navigated their teenage years. As they grew up, they developed a love for science fiction, hip-hop, and playing music. At first, Gabe filled the role of drummer by default, having played since he was 8 years old. However, each of the guys took time to explore a different instrument.

Guitarist Collins eventually met up with bassist Mike Wronski, and the two put together a few songs under the band name Hazz, drawn from Collins’ childhood in England.

“In England, if your name is Harry, Barry or Gary, they’ll give you -azz at the end,” explained Collins. “Hazz, Bazz, Gazz. Even if your name is Matthew, they’ll call you Mazz.”

Hazz played a heavily rhythmic, dance-based sound, indebted to the music of the ’80s, particularly New Wave. Collins would often describe Hazz to people as a dance band, due to its emphasis on repetition, simplicity and rhythm. Also, they had a drum machine.

Hazz is a band with a dance-based sound that’s “sweet with a little dirt on it.”

I’m a woman in my 20s, and female friends and I find that, generally speaking, once a guy gets into a relationship his texting dwindles into brief news bites, like “fell asleep!” or “phone died.” Why do men seem to lose interest in chatting by text like I do with my girlfriends?

Are men just less feeling than women?

Who says men aren’t emotional? “I don’t wanna talk about it!” is an emotion.

But actually, the male brain is not the emotional dead zone many women suspect it to be, with a few tumbleweeds and a Doritos bag blowing through in place of feelings. In fact, neuroscientist Tor Wager reviewed 65 brain imaging studies and found that men’s brains aren’t any less responsive to emotional stimuli than women’s.

However, women tend to be more emotionally expressive. This difference makes sense, as women evolved to be the caregivers of the species—tending to the needs of babies (who typically require a more nurturing response than “Bring it, bro!”). Men, on the other hand, evolved to be the warriors of the species—competing for the alpha dog spot by clubbing a rhino or the most hombres from another tribe. This has had an effect on how men express themselves. As sex differences researcher Joyce Benenson explains, when you’re a warrior, revealing your feelings— like having a good cry on the battlefield—puts you at a disadvantage. Kind of like going out in a T-shirt with a big arrow and “Your spear here!”

Conversationally, where men and woman differ is in why they talk and what they talk about. Linguist Deborah Tannen describes male versus female styles of communication as “report” versus “rapport.” In short, while women use conversation, including texting, as a form of bonding, for men, it’s a tool. And just like other tools, men use it as needed. As my boyfriend put it, “you bring out the wrench when you have a loose nut. You don’t go around looking for nuts to fasten. Also, afterward, you put the wrench away. There’s no ‘Let’s us boys get together and explore how we feel about wrenches.’”

This explains why many guys text more in the chase phase, when they need to “talk chick,” to a degree, to reel you in. Once they have you, they fall back to what’s more natural for them—texting merely to say stuff like “late!” or “w/get wine” (the SMS form of grunting). But this should simply be seen as a different style of communicating, not a deficient one. You judge whether a man cares about you by

the sum of his actions, not by his pointer finger action. And besides, if you demand that he text you like a woman, he’s within his rights to expect you to act like a man—by carrying his luggage like a pack mule while he totters behind you in heels or by chasing a mugger while he stands on the corner crying softly and hoping you’ll come out of it alive.

My friends think it’s a red flag that he doesn’t post about us on Facebook. Do you think they’re right?

Secrecy is about having something to hide—often something shady you’ve done—while privacy is about choosing who gets the scoop on your life. There’s this notion that if you aren’t doing anything wrong, you’ve got nothing to hide. Well, you aren’t doing anything wrong on the toilet, but you probably don’t want to replace your bathroom walls with glass and set up bleachers in the backyard. Apparently, your boyfriend just expects people to put in effort to invade his privacy—rather than his being all “Welcome to our relationship! attitude in Reno is exceptional. The quality of life is phenomenal. That’s why we’re here.

It seems like most baseball fans in Reno are Giants fans, but there’s also so much hometown support for the Aces even though they’re affiliated with the Diamondbacks.

Mike Krukow is a former Major League Baseball starting pitcher who played for the Chicago Cubs, the Philadelphia Phillies and the San Francisco Giants.

He’s in his 23rd season as a broadcaster with the Giants organization, providing analysis and color commentary for games on Comcast SportsNet Bay Area and NBC Bay Area telecasts, KNBR Radio broadcasts, and affiliated stations. And he lives in Reno during the offseason.

Just a week or so into the new season, how are things shaping up for the Giants?

Well, this was a team that was expected to do well. And I think it’s imperative that you get off to a good start. A couple of things have happened in the first seven games.

They’ve had some nice comeback victories.

They’ve had some contributions from everybody in the offense. So I think from a swinging-the-bats perspective, they’re a pretty confident bunch. And they’re not afraid to fall down early in a ballgame and get down by as many as five runs. We saw them comeback against the Dodgers. They came back actually twice—one time down 4-0, and one time down 5-0. I think that’s significant. They’re a confident bunch. A couple of guys in the rotation still trying to get their sea legs. One is Jeff Samardzija, going tonight—he was a little over-amped in his first start in Milwaukee. And Jake Peavy was a little over-amped. You need to settle into a routine and hit that comfort zone, so that’s still at stake. But they’re healthy and

they’re happy, and they’re optimistic for this season.

Johnny Cueto is really fun to watch.

Cueto—from a broadcaster’s perspective— it doesn’t get any better than that. He’s really fun to analyze because he can mix things up not only with his stuff, but with his motion. He gets it. Pitching is upsetting the timing of the hitter—that’s all it is. And he finds ways to do that with his motion. I think that sets him apart from everybody else in the game.

Have you been to Aces games?

Well, no, because it parallels my schedule.

I really don’t get a chance to get home and take advantage of it. But I’ve been to the ballpark many times. One thing about being a baseball player—if there’s a ballpark in town, you’ve got to go check it out. And it’s a phenomenal facility. We just think it’s spectacular, as is Peccole Park. Peccole Park is a great place to watch college baseball. And now I’m watching T-ball with my grandson.

Reno has some great Little League fields.

He’s over in the Somersett area. So, I’ve run the spectrum as far as seeing what Reno has to offer as far as baseball stadiums. Ω

What do you like about living in Reno?

Well, first of all, I like my grandkids. My son and my daughter-in-law have two kids, and that got my wife and I up here. But we had a cabin up in Soda Springs for many years, and we snowboarded up here for many years.

We just love the area. We like the altitude.

Every once in a while, something happens in the world of sports that is special, electrifying, even transcendental. Men like Babe Ruth, Jackie Robinson, Arnold Palmer, Muhammad Ali and Tiger Woods grew, in their own inimitable ways, beyond the usual limits of their sport to become instantly recognizable and beloved cultural figures.

I think it’s happening again. I think it’s about to happen really good ’n’ crazy. And, improbably enough, it’s happening in Oakland.

By now, you’ve probably heard that the Golden State Warriors are a really good basketball team. But you may not be fully aware that this remarkable collection of players is now on the verge of soaring into the realm of The Special, and the climax of this metamorphosis will occur in mid-June.

I got hip to all this last year, when I casually starting watching the Dubs (as in The Ws, for the Warriors) in December. And I discovered while watching their games that there were often mo-

Absolutely. I go around town, and I’m constantly talking Giants baseball. People feel like they know me because they see me on TV every day. They come up, very relaxed, and immediately start talking about the Giants, as if we’re next door neighbors and have been for 10 years. And a lot of them have Aces T-shirts and hats on. They like baseball. We knew that coming up here when my son played for UNR. It’s a great crowd. They enjoy their baseball. They’ve got a good history for it. My partner Duane Kuiper played for the Reno Silver Sox back in 1972. So he has a fondness for it as well.

It’s just a great area for baseball.

ments when these guys would play at a level of skill that was higher, better and dare I say more artistic than their opponents, in the way that basketball, when dashingly choreographed on the fly, can indeed be athletically artistic. This stuff was not only fun to watch, it was also thrilling. As golfers used to say about Tiger in his prime, “The guy is playing a game with which I am unfamiliar.” That’s how it was getting to be with The Dubs. These dudes would at times freaking fly on their fast breaks or running their offense, flipping and flinging lightning quick passes that would often be undefensible. It really was basketball as its own unique jocked up ballet, ballin’ at a whole ’nother level, and it didn’t take long before I just got caught up and, yes indeedy, proclaimed myself to be a new member of the rapidly growing Dub Nation.

In April of ’15, it was obvious this was a special team. That suspicion was confirmed when the Warriors beat Lebron and the Cavs for the

NBA championship in June. This season, for their encore, the Dubs have raised their already very high bar of performance to where they are, at times, not just good, but scary good. To the point where now, you can make a very good case for the Dubs being the best basketball team ever in the 125-year existence of the sport.

Yes, their leader is the incredible Steph Curry, who not only is the greatest long bomb shooter in the history of the NBA, but an absolute wizard of a ball handler, passer and layup layer. He is, undoubtedly, the new Tiger. But along with the dazzling Curry, you also have Klay, Draymond, Iggy, Bogey, Festus, Mo Buckets, and the great and perfect Coach Kerr, and it all adds up to this extraordinary perfect storm of talent, coolness, and excellence that makes for a spectacle that’s truly worthy of the overused cliche, “must see TV.” Ω |
