F R O M O UR P R E S I D E N T “Fan into flame the gift of God which is in you.” 2 Timothy 1:6

Dear Friend of RENEW, Who passed the flame of faith on to you? How can you fan into a flame the gift of faith?

Sister Terry

Imagine a lively conversation among a circle of trusted friends as you ask yourself these questions and share the experience of God’s presence in your life. What difference would it make in your life if you had a small group of friends supporting and challenging you in your faith journey as you navigate the struggles and joys of life? These are exactly the types of questions and faith-filled conversations that Catholics around the world experience as they take part in the pastoral programs offered by RENEW International. The deep explorations of beliefs and the decision to take action based on faith lead people to a greater sense of meaning in their lives. By “connecting the dots” between faith and daily life, many find the Holy Spirit working through them to accomplish great deeds on behalf of others. For more than three decades, we at RENEW International have presented parishioners with Catholic teachings and Sacred Scripture in a small group setting that encourages an awakening and renewal of their Catholic faith. Today more than ever, our society and our world are calling out for the Good News of Jesus Christ in a way that banishes cynicism, loneliness, injustice, and violence.

C O NN E C T I N G FA I T H T O L I F E

As you read this Annual Report, we hope you will be struck by the many varied ways that pastoral offerings from RENEW International are helping Catholics connect with their faith and live their lives anew in Christ Jesus the Lord. We ask for your prayers and support as we renew the church by inviting people to be part of small faith communities where they can reflect on and share how God is working in their lives and bear witness to their faith in their homes, work places, and communities through word and works of charity and acts of justice. Thank you for your support, generosity, and prayer as we work together through the power of the Holy Spirit to renew our church one person, one parish, one diocese at a time. With warmest regards and deep gratitude,

Sr. Theresa Rickard, O.P., D.Min. President and Executive Director

Dear Friend of RENEW, I have been part of the RENEW International board for 12 years. It is remarkable how this organization continues to move forward in making connections with church leaders and reaching more people in the pews. RENEW processes help participants understand their Catholic faith, find a closer relationship with God, and put their faith into action by helping others. RENEW can continue providing valuable resources to our church only through excellent leadership and insightful management. The board is but one piece of the commitment to that excellence and insightfulness. In 2012, RENEW International stayed true to its mission, creating new processes to reach the large population of French-Canadian Catholics, answer the church’s call for evangelization, and meet the needs for Catholic social teaching in the Hispanic community. While the management team and staff tend to the business of expanding RENEW’s mission, the board provides both fiscal oversight and direction to ensure that RENEW’s activities remain faithful to its longterm mission.

Thank you for your prayers and support.

ENEW International works towards a world in which Catholics live their daily lives—at home, at work, at school, and in their parish communities—with the inspiration and values drawn from their belief in Jesus Christ and their Catholic faith. RENEW International’s innovative pastoral offerings are designed to help Catholics awaken and deepen their faith through reflection and prayer, and then, by sharing faith in small communities, make the connection between their faith and their lives. This call to discipleship in the everyday is a mission that has been embraced by Catholics around the world. The next few pages provide a brief overview of how RENEW International’s processes and published resources are serving dioceses and parishes around the world as they seek to create vibrant communities of gospel hope, along with real-life stories of people awakening their faith and putting faith into action.

Through baptism, Christians are called to witness to their faith, but many lack the basic knowledge and confidence to do so. Why Catholic? Journey Through the Catechism, an evangelization and faith formation process, helps Catholics encounter Christ in Scripture and Sacred Tradition and reach out to share faith with others. The process also helps parents pass along to their children a full appreciation of the rich gifts of Catholicism.

Following are a few of the highlights of Why Catholic?/Por qué ser católico? participants enriching their faith and connecting faith with action:

People connecting with their faith… ◗◗ A participant from Louisville, KY, said: “We are learning so much about what it means to be Catholic as we discuss each week’s topic as well as sharing our past and present experiences. Being an old-time Catholic, this experience brings tears to my eyes.” ◗◗ Retreats provided a special setting for prayer and sharing. From St. Gall parish in the Diocese of Reno, NV, we received the following: “Having recalled how Eucharist is bread for our own journey, we reflected on how we are called to be Eucharist for others on their journey with the inspiration of Archbishop Oscar Romero’s witness.”

… And connecting faith with life ◗◗ In Chihuahua, Mexico, a parish brings its small faith-sharing groups into the community to reach those who are not active in the parish. They are helping to form two young adult groups, one for teens, and groups for the elderly and homebound.

◗◗ In Fishkill, NY, St. Mary Mother of the Church Parish has been doing Why Catholic? for several years. They put faith into action by supporting a homeless shelter in Poughkeepsie, about 13 miles north. “Dozens of churches in our area participate,” said one parishioner. “Every night, one of the parishes prepares and brings meals to feed 60 people at the shelter.” ◗◗ An American soldier and his wife were Why Catholic? leaders in Hawaii. He was killed in Afghanistan earlier this year. Two other military wives, both of whom had been part of the same Why Catholic? group in Hawaii, traveled many miles across the United States to offer spiritual consolation to the widow during the funeral in upstate New York. Another flew from Germany, where her husband is now stationed, to comfort her friend from the small faith community.

Participants at Holy Redeemer Church in Odessa, TX, celebrate their LEVÁNTATE experience.

In the Gospel of John, Jesus said, “I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly” ( Jn 10:10). Many adults, not feeling completely fulfilled by today’s culture, are looking for a deeper sense of meaning and belonging. ARISE Together in Christ/ LEVÁNTATE. Unamonos en Cristo encourages participants to enter into a personal relationship with Christ and experience his message of abundant life for all believers. As a three-year, parish-centered process of evangelization and spiritual renewal, ARISE fosters closer personal relationships with Christ, growth in bonds of community within the parish, and outreach in service to others. 8

HI G H L I G H T S 2 0 1 1 - 2 0 1 2 ARISE Together in Christ has touched the lives of thousands of Catholics in the dioceses of Stockton, CA; San Angelo, TX; and London, Ontario, Canada. People connecting with their faith… ◗◗ “It has made me a more compassionate and loving person,” said an ARISE participant from Our Lady of the Assumption Church, a Portuguese parish in Turlock, CA. “I have learned to step out of my comfort zone, take a risk, and grow. Now I am closer to Jesus, the Blessed Trinity, as well as his mother, Mary. They are getting me through my husband’s untimely death.”

…And connecting faith to life ◗◗ “We were out with some Confirmation students on a winter walk. After about a half mile I discovered I was wearing leaky boots—and my feet got so cold!” recalls Carol, an ARISE participant. “I couldn’t wait to get home to warm my feet. Afterwards I thought, ‘there but for the grace of God go I.’ I wasn’t one of the people who had to walk the streets wondering where I was going to warm my feet that night.” Carol and her small community decided to raise money for Hearth, an organization devoted to alleviating homelessness among the elderly. She led a project to create and sell an ARISE cookbook. Money raised from selling the book, which has exceeded $14,000, earned St. Julia’s Parish the Community Partner award from Hearth.

With their myriad duties and often solitary lives, many priests lack day-to-day connections with their brother priests for prayer and mutual spiritual support. RENEW International is helping priests make personal and faith connections with Renewing the Priestly Heart, a faith-sharing process specifically for priests, developed in collaboration with Our Sunday Visitor Publications.

HI G H L I G H T S 2 0 1 2 - 2 0 1 2

Renewing the Priestly Heart was introduced at the Fall 2011 General Assembly of the USCCB and was piloted in the Diocese of Davenport and with groups of priests in other dioceses. Renewing the Priestly Heart uses the RENEW process of gathering and sharing in small groups. Here’s a sampling of what priests are saying: ◗◗ “Our diocesan clergy are thankful to the staff of RENEW for the workshop at our November Clergy Days. New priest support groups were formed and existing groups were introduced into Renewing the

that Fr. John Sassani, author of Renewing the Priestly Heart, is working with RENEW to engage priests in this clergy renewal effort.

◗◗ “The last concern we priests seem to have is ourselves as individuals. We can easily get lost in the mix of issues and responsibilities facing priests in this 21st century church. One way I find my own bearings is by gathering with my peers to pray together and grapple with the really important aspects of life as a priest. Renewing the Priestly Heart is a fine resource for that kind of exchange.” —Fr. Thomas Devery, director, Office of Priest Personnel, Archdiocese of New York

OUT L O OK 2 0 12 -2 0 13 Based on feedback from participants, RENEW expects this offering to contribute to the priests’ own personal spiritual renewal while also encouraging them to see the blessings of small-group faith sharing for their parishioners’ growth. During fall 2012 and beyond, RENEW staff members will present this important process to priest groups in the Dioceses of Brooklyn, NY, and Metuchen, NJ, and the Archdiocese of Montreal, Canada. RENEW has also been invited to present on priestly renewal at the 2013 conference of the National Federation of Priests’ Councils.

Lent is an important season in the spiritual life of the Church, and RENEW offers resources to engage Catholics in a meaningful Lenten experience. Written by Sister Catherine T. Nerney, SSJ, PhD, each book in the Lenten Longings series contains six sessions with themes drawn from the readings for the six weeks of Lent. For the Life of the World— Year B was introduced for use during the 2012 Lenten season. The Lenten Longings series also features a music CD with songs selected for all three liturgical cycles of Lent. Serving Spanish-speaking parishioners during Lent, Llamados a la conversión—Año B, was published as part of the Reflexiones en Cuaresma series written by evangelist/poet Dr. Irma Chávez. RENEW also produce a companion Spanish music CD, Comunidad que canta: Himnos para la Cuaresma, with songs to accompany the three years of Cuaresma.

Advent Awakenings/ Reflexiones en Adviento RENEW International introduced new faith-sharing resources for Advent to help anticipate this holy season. Take the Time—Year B was the first book to be published in the Advent Awakenings series. It includes faith-sharing sessions for four weeks of Advent and devotions that participants can use with their families at home. A music CD to accompany all three books in the series was also produced. Vigilantes y en espera—Año B is the first book in the Spanish series, Reflexiones en Adviento, written by Dr. Irma Chávez. The bishops of South Africa want to build a self-reliant and selfsustaining church and they see small Christian communities as the vehicle for spiritual renewal and for strong connections within and across the parishes. Participants within small Christian communities deepen communion with one another and with Christ and reach out in service to others as an essential expression of their faith. Training sessions encourage the development of new lay leadership, so essential to becoming a truly self-sustaining church.

HI G H L I G H T S 2 0 1 1 - 2 0 1 2 RENEW Africa is a dynamic, engaging process for the spiritual renewal of parishes, specifically designed to connect with the unique faith experiences of Africans in their daily lives. This process was begun in the Archdiocese of Johannesburg and the Anglican Diocese of Saldana Bay this past year. The Diocese of Port Elizabeth, in an effort to keep small communities flourishing year round, followed their recent completion of RENEW Africa with both Lenten Longings, a resource for Lent from RENEW translated into Xhosa and Afrikaans, and then continued with Why Catholic?

People connecting with their faith … ◗◗ “The RENEW Africa parish mission was so powerful! The church kept getting fuller every night until the last night, when people were standing outside the church. Many have come back and have

Since we have gathered in SCCs I’ve had lots and lots of people offering their services for ministry. development RENEW International’s primary development goal is to help Catholics in disadvantaged parishes become vibrant faith communities by supplying part of the funding needed for RENEW processes and resources. Through its fundraising efforts, RENEW brings its mission to foster spiritual renewal in the Catholic tradition to parishes with limited financial resources in America’s inner cities and in rural areas. RENEW also aids dioceses and parishes in developing countries in Africa and Latin America that want to bring RENEW small Christian communities to their parishioners. Msgr. Tom Kleissler, co-founder of RENEW, attended the gala. With him, from left, are Sr.Mary McGuinness, OP , Greg Kremer, and Sr. Terry.

In fiscal 2012, development income was $520,000. This amount, lower than last year’s income, reflects continued weakness in the economy, specifically the high unemployment rate and volatile investment markets. Still, there were many financial successes in the past year and significant plans laid for future increases in development revenue:

Following are some specific plans for FY 2013: ◗◗ To improve our communication and stewardship with individual donors, we will continue to schedule intimate gatherings of donors primarily in peoples’ homes to update them on RENEW’s mission and ask their continued financial support. ◗◗ We will be doing extensive communication and education regarding the many options for estate gifts available through the new Msgr. financial summary

Fiscal 2012 was a difficult year financially for RENEW International. The continuing malaise in the economy and turbulent financial markets contributed to reductions in orders for RENEW processes and resources and also hampered fundraising. The result was a decline in net income for the fiscal year compared with the previous fiscal year. While RENEW reduced operating costs in some areas to meet this fiscal challenge, we also invested selectively in project development. RENEW has managed economic downturns before; we know our customers and their demand for our services. Yes, fiscal 2012 was challenging; but the economy will improve, and RENEW will

be ready to meet the needs of dioceses and parishes around the world with processes and resources to assist Catholics everywhere in their faith journeys.

Operating Results for Fiscal 2012 RENEW International reported a net loss of $448,000 in fiscal 2012 versus income of $651,000 for the fiscal year 2011. Included in the $448,000 loss was positive endowment income of $60,000. Total operating revenue was $2,784,000. Revenue from publications and other sources was $1,329,000, and process-fee revenue was $935,000. While the slow economy did hurt sales in 2012, we know that many parishes are seeking these resources and we expect a rebound as the

Sources of Revenue (in thousands) 3500

In keeping with its mission, RENEW continues to provide financial assistance to parishes that cannot contribute to the full cost of the processes. A big reason for our success in helping struggling parishes is the generous support of Catholic Extension, which continues to be a key strategic partner of RENEW.

Process-related costs for 2012 were $2,825,000, which represented 86 percent of total operating expenses. This is a slight increase over the previous year and reflects our confidence in the growing need for RENEW processes.

Endowment income was $60,000, resulting in an average return on investment of 1.3 percent. This was competitive with our benchmarks, but well below the 14.1 percent return in fiscal 2011.

Development costs for the fiscal year were $250,000, while general and administrative costs (including building, technology and office-related expense) were $217,000. These expenses were somewhat below fiscal 2011. RENEW International’s endowment at June 30, 2012 was $4,711,000, an increase of 1 percent over 2011.

Considering the volatility of the financial markets, the positive return is encouraging. RENEW has continued to pursue a cautious investment policy, balancing its investments over several asset classes. At June 30, 2012, equity investments were 54 percent of the total endowment. The remaining 46 percent of the portfolio is invested in bonds and other fixedincome securities. The investment committee believes

RENEW’s approach to responsible stewardship in its investment philosophy is demonstrated by its commitment to the socially responsible investing guidelines from the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.

Balance Sheet Total assets at June 30, 2012 were $6,199,000. Highlights include: Cash balances were $4,918,000: The ratio of current assets to current liabilities was 8.4 times at June 30, 2012 reflecting an extremely liquid balance sheet. Accounts receivables, net of reserves, were $360,000 at June 30, 2012 versus $483,000 at the end of the 2011 fiscal year. Strong collection practices, as well as installment payment procedures, contributed to the decrease. Inventory was $338,000, up from $301,000, because of a larger amount of published materials, including Advent Awakenings and Renewing the Priestly Heart. Fixed assets, net of depreciation, were $448,000, a decrease of 7 percent compared with the previous year. This reflected decreased capital spending, as many projects were completed in fiscal 2011, as well as the full-year effect of depreciation.

OUT L O OK 2 0 12 -2 0 13 RENEW is committed to achieve positive income for fiscal year 2013. Our goal is to increase operating revenue through growth in process fees, sales of resources and development revenue.

Operating Revenue RENEW has increased its outreach to new dioceses and parishes, which we believe will translate into greater sales of processes and resources. Our strong partnership with Catholic Extension will continue to be instrumental in expanding our work with mission dioceses. RENEW expects to increase revenues in 2013. Of note are: our new program At Prayer with Mary and resources devoted to the Church’s call for a new evangelization and the designation of 2012-2013 as the Year of Faith. In development, we are focusing on raising the level of annual giving among individual donors and securing deferred gifts through our new estate giving program, the Msgr. Thomas A. Kleissler Legacy Society.

Operating Expenses RENEW is committed to cost control, with a targeted spending increase of no higher than 1 percent over fiscal 2012.

Fixed Assets: $448 OTHER

Inventory: $338 Receivables: $360 Other Assets: $135

Endowment While returns on the endowment portfolio will always fluctuate — sometimes widely — the RENEW Board of Trustees has adopted a policy to withdraw a small portion of the endowment each year to put toward fulfilling its mission goals. The policy is designed to ensure that the endowment will provide funds each year for RENEW’s mission while preserving a large majority of the endowment assets for future use.
