Messages From Faculty Message from Director With immense joy, I send my message to the students of this dynamic institute, which through grit and determination, have evolved into a vast oasis of learning.

.

I am happy to see the students of SVNIT bring out yet another issue of the ‘Times of SVNIT’ newsletter. This newsletter acts as a platform to highlight all the accomplishments, events, and other activities that student chapters have been doing, as well as the success of individual students.

SVNIT ranked 65th among Engineering Institutes in India in 2023. Its excellent academic programs and rigorous research across several disciplines of STEM and humanities have helped us produce quality undergraduates who contribute tremendously to various sectors, both nationally and internationally. Our faculty has high research prowess, alongside excellent teaching skills. In fact, some of our faculty members have been ranked among the top 2% of scientists worldwide. Many members of our faculty have been actively contributing to the state and national government projects, in the form of consultancy services.

We have successfully adopted the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, from this year onwards. We hope that the initiatives taken by the government and our institute greatly benefit the students.

Alongside our faculty members, even our students are engaged in multiple endeavours outside of academics. This newsletter is proof of that. After seeing the tremendous effort of the students in bringing out this newsletter, I take great pride in congratulating the Renesa team.

Newsletters like these convey the achievements and creative ability of the students of SVNIT to other institutes. They help in making headways into the future, by providing students a fair outline of a plan of action. I can say proudly that SVNIT, Surat will continue to produce some of the finest researchers and engineers in the country.

Best wishes,

Prof. Anupam Shukla

Message from Dean Student Welfare The Times of SVNIT introduces the freshmen to all the cocurricular activities that our Institute has in store for them. Its agenda is to provide an overview of the various Student Chapters that play an integral role in the overall development of a student. From Technical Clubs to Recreational ones and everything in between, each chapter stands out with its unique aims and eligibility.

As we stand at the beginning of another semester, I’m sure all of you must have had a great time at KASHISH. Some of your batchmates had actively taken part in various Inter-NIT Tournaments, LitFest, MMNCT and other such events. We will be organizing MindBend: The Technical Fest, Sparsh: The Cultural Fest and other sports tournaments.

SVNIT’s teaching community encourages every individual to explore their innate talents and broaden the versatility of their skillset. At the same time, the students are expected to balance their academic and social life. Negligence in attending lectures in the name of events is forbidden.

Each club has been doing its best in organizing a plethora of events. I request you all to take the time to go through this newsletter and know about those initiatives. I strongly encourage each of you to actively attend the orientations of any student chapter that piques your interest. Spend quality time on polishing your skills to grow into a productive citizen of this nation.

Lastly, I commend the efforts of Team Renesa in compiling this house of information. Thanks to the Official Media and Publication House, this college has never been short of creative content. I look forward to more such great works from them.

ACM Summer Challenge

Inception 7.0 and Epiphany 12.0

ACM SVNIT Surat conducted various coding events, workshops, long-challenges, volunteering drives and a flagship hackathon during the previous academic calendar. To begin the year, in the month of June, we conducted the highly beneficial ACM Summer Challenge which was a monthlong marathon coding contest for first-year students to get-hands on experience of competitive programming. To achieve this, hand-picked programming questions were given every week for the participants to solve, so as to progress from a beginner to an advanced level in the course of the month. Furthermore, resources were provided and doubt solving was done to further expedite the learning process. This contest was attended by 200+ students and the winners from the first year were awarded with prizes.

Following this, in the months of September and November 2022, we conducted a series of online blitz coding contests named Inception 7.0 and Epiphany 12.0, respectively, which had participation from students across the nation. Inception is a coding contest exclusively for SVNIT students where students are provided with post-contest guidance and open discussions for any queries. It consisted of 5-7 programming problems of varying difficulty that were to be solved within a span of 2 hours. The winners from first year students were awarded with encouraging prizes. Epiphany on the other hand is a nation-wide coding contest which attracted 300+ participants from across the country. The objective of giving SVNIT students the exposure of national competition was achieved successfully. These contests have the sporting spirit of coding in it and bring all the geeky coders on their toes.

Workshop on Git/GitHub & Open-source Besides, we also conducted an offline workshop on the industry tools Git and GitHub, with participation from over 120 SVNIT students. Students were instructed on the process of installation, were explained the necessity of its application, and were guided to perform some basic operations on their own machines. Furthermore, cheat sheets were provided to serve as not only a reference to basic instructions but also as a memory aid potentially useful further down the line. Solutions to common issues when dealing with these tools were provided and overall the speakers aimed at giving the students an introduction to industry level version control techniques 8

selected to finally present their product to the judges. Three teams out of these, were selected as the winner and the runner-ups and were provided with well-deserved prizes.

ACM Hour of Code To end the semester, ACM NIT Surat chapter participated in the worldwide volunteering campaign of spreading awareness on Computer Science as a part of Computer Science Week. In the week from 5th December to 11th December 2022, ACM Executives from SVNIT conducted one-hour programming sessions about HTML and CSS also called ACM Hour of Code. Students were taught how to design a webpage and some basic concepts of Web Development. Executives visited five schools across Surat and Vadodara, addressing a crowd of over 500 students. ACM NIT Surat was also awarded by the Official ACM for reaching a large audience number.

CodeWars Finally to close the academic year, ACM conducted one more round of its blitz coding contest Epiphany 12.1, which had a similar format as Epiphany 12.0. In collaboration with MindBend SVNIT, ACM also conducted a national level coding contest, CodeWars, which was an offline event and was conducted in the computer labs of SVNIT. The questions were handcrafted by the problem-setters at ACM. It had 6-questions which were to be solved within a duration of 2 hours. There were over 45 teams on the event day and each team had 1-3 members. The executives from ACM volunteered and coordinated the event with the coordinators of Mindbend.

DotSlash 6.0 On 18th-19th February 2023, ACM in association with ASHINE, the incubation cell of SVNIT, conducted one of the largest student organized hackathons of the year DotSlash 6.0, with participation from over 17 cities across India, conducted offline in the lush-green campus of SVNIT. Participants were given 36 hours to develop their software product, during the course of which two mentorship sessions were conducted. Each mentorship session involved the teams pitching their product idea, its implementation and current progress to a set of mentors who would then judge them based on the novelty of their idea and their style of implementation. The same mentors would then provide constructive feedback to the teams for how to improve their product further. At the end of these 36 hours, the top 8 teams that had the best projects were

staff would discard these belongings, resulting in unnecessary waste.

To address these issues, Endeavour to Help endeavours to collect and redistribute the abandoned items left by final-year students to those in need. Needy students are given access to these donated items for a minimal security fee, which is returned once the borrowed items are returned. This approach not only aids numerous students in their educational pursuits but also fosters a spirit of altruism, encouraging people to extend a helping hand to others in need.

Kite Festival for Unprivileged Nirvana brought smiles to the faces of underprivileged children through a joyous kite festival. To spread happiness and foster inclusivity, the club successfully distributed kites among the kids, providing them with an opportunity to experience the thrill of kite-flying.

The event became a colorful spectacle as vibrant kites filled the sky. The children, many of whom had never flown a kite before, reveled in the excitement and laughter that permeated the atmosphere. Volunteers from Nirvana Club assisted the children and helped them form teams, engage in friendly kite battles, and cheered them on. The event gave these children a sense of belonging and reminded them that they too deserve to soar high in life.

With colorful kites soaring high in the sky and the joyful laughter of underprivileged children filling the air, Nirvana Club's kite festival concluded as a remarkable success. Nirvana Club takes pride in making a difference in the lives of underprivileged children and looks forward to continuing its mission of spreading happiness.

Daily Activities The club's compassionate team of volunteers poured their hearts into creating a nurturing learning environment. They tirelessly organized engaging classes, inspiring workshops, and personalized tutoring sessions to cater to the unique needs of each child. By providing a well-rounded curriculum, the club aimed not only to impart knowledge but also to instill a sense of confidence and personal growth in their young students.
