Messages From Faculty The annual institute magazine ‘Renesa - Farewell Edition’ provides the perfect blend for showcasing the dizzying heights scaled by the students of SVNIT, as well as for bidding the final year students a goodbye they would always love to remember. SVNIT has always encouraged its students to do well in academics as well as in sports and cultural activities and the latter too have made the institute feel proud of them on several occasions. Innumerable opportunities are provided for students to excel in academic as well as other extra-curricular arenas. Ours being an institute of national importance, it is the fundamental duty of the students to evolve into responsible citizens and live up to the expectations of the country and to work for the service of humanity as well. I am sure that our students are committed to the same. ‘RENESA’ is not just a magazine, but a phenomenon, which not only highlights the achievements of the fellow students of our institute but also gives the young writers, poets, and artists a chance to showcase their talent. It is a souvenir to all the students who will be leaving the college to start a new phase in their life. It gives me pleasure to write this message and wish the final year students all the very best in life ahead and to come with a bright career. May you achieve success in all your future endeavours. I am happy to know that the student team of SVNIT is publishing ‘Renesa - Farewell Edition 2021’ under the able supervision of the faculty advisors of the Institute. Renesa aims to keep the people of SVNIT well-informed and fully aware of the important issues, events, and achievements related to the college, and serve as a platform for the creative expression of thoughts through writing and design. This magazine is one of the platforms in SVNIT through which students can express their creative thoughts and literal potential. The contents of the magazine are also accessed by people from outside SVNIT as the magazine is published and shared through online mode using social media platforms. I am sure that the contents of the Renesa magazine will give good exposure to the faculty, staff, and students about ongoing good practices of the Institute. Its publication through online media platforms will definitely improve the perception of the Institute to the outside world. I would like to extend my special best wishes to all the students of the passing out batch of

final year (2020-2021 Academic Year) for their future endeavours, and thank them for being part of SVNIT for four or five years. Dear graduating students of the Batch of 2021, Being the last semester of your course/program at the Institute, it is a time for you and your families where new careers and dreams are waiting after graduation. Like all the other Institutes across the country and abroad, the COVID-19 pandemic has triggered an interruption in the classroom teaching– learning process from the last three semesters. With all effort from the teachers, students, and supporting staff, the Institute is continuously trying to enrich the students’ knowledge and skills. Despite all the constraints during this pandemic, I am happy that students have actively participated in the activities of Chapters under the Student Council. They won prizes at various events. The Student Chapters organized multiple events in online mode. I am confident that your efforts to organize student activities and helping the junior batches will continue even after completing your course. I am sure that many of you wanted to come back to campus in the final month to celebrate your highest achievements, meet with your friends and teachers, and indulge in fun activities. The Institute was also thinking of calling the final-year students of undergraduate courses sometime in April 2021. However, the situation of the COVID-19 pandemic unfortunately became very critical across the country. Looking at the safety of students, it was not possible to bring them back to campus. I want to take this opportunity to congratulate all of you and extend my best wishes for the new journey of your life. Please stay in touch with the Institute and write to me when you get time. Share your achievements with us so that we can celebrate the same. I appeal to the graduating students to help others in any form during this COVID-19 pandemic. Dear young friends and graduating batch of the institute, Surely you would be overwhelmed after the completion of the graduate degree program journey. Recall ‘Richard Feynman’ for his legendary intuitive, mathematical, as well as engineering understandings. He taught us that engineers model to understand, not to predict. Succinctly, those who understand, they do not predict. Those who predict, they do not understand. Understanding is the design. Here, I discuss methods in general to resolve tomorrow’s technological and societal problems. Recollect the following three key points: ideas stemming from diverse fields and beyond the curriculum, the neighbourhood of broadly experienced mentors and finally, exploration over exploitation. That would fulfil the great expectation and bring guaranteed success. Please do not forget that ‘The society expects you to solve the formidable problems of the 21st century’. Like previous years, the final-year batch is graduating from Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology, Surat. This batch is different from the others as the whole final year and part of third year were converted completely into online mode of teaching and learning due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It is difficult to accept that all of you have enjoyed this off-campus life. I know that some of the students do not have laptops or tablets and some students have these but do not have a highspeed network. It was very difficult for them to cope with the situation. Still, I can say that this tough time has taught us many things that will help to overcome any difficult situation in the coming future. We have to think positive and keep aside all negative thoughts. Now, I have some words for our graduating students. You will dissipate the SVNIT brand all over the globe. You have the blessings of all the members of SVNIT and your parents. You all have the potential in you to fulfill all your ambitions; no one can stop you from achieving them. The only thing required is to know the potential hidden in you. I am certain that you will accomplish the expectations of your parents and also serve our nation. Dear readers, Welcome to the 2021 Farewell Edition of Renesa! This magazine is a glimpse of the thoughts, experience, and talent of our students and faculty. Renesa attempts to bring out the essence of creative writing in students, staff, teaching faculty, and also well-wishers. It offers an opportunity to express our minds to address the issues of the age. Sharing ideas and points of view are very noble human acts that need to be encouraged at all levels. This serves a social cause of reaching where knowledge or information is needed, thereby bridging the gap between those who are gifted with knowledge and those who are deprived of it for whatever reasons. Another important aspect of sharing knowledge is its unique feature of personality grooming for the younger generation. A small piece of literature by a student boosts his/her personality as he/she gets recognition, which is an example of early success that leads to many more in the future. I appreciate the efforts of all the Renesa team members since they dare to bring the magazine in spite of so many difficulties. These glimpses will remain printed forever, as we all combat the COVID-19 crisis together. The journey is not yet complete, but we are indebted to all those who are putting their lives at stake, giving priority to health, and maintaining social ethics and human values. Dear readers, welcome to the Farewell Edition of 2021. I started off with this quote from Dumbledore not because I’m a Potterhead (just kidding, I am) but because I want to set a precedent. We’ve found ourselves spiraling down the vortex of despair, negativity, and sadness far too often in the past year. Today, let us not focus on what we lost, but rather, on what we still have. The Batch of 2021, at this moment, you probably feel bittersweet, maybe even cheated. You have a cocktail of emotions swirling inside of you, rendering you incapable of thinking about anything else. However, bear with me. Continue reading this editorial and then flip through the pages of this magazine, dedicated to your batch. I promise that along the way, you’ll rediscover those pleasant little memories hidden deep within the crevices of your mind. You entered this evergreen campus as young boys and girls, aspiring to make your mark in college. You now leave as experienced men and women, capable of achieving anything you set your heart on. But how did such a stunning transformation occur? How did you go from being wideeyed and naïve freshers, admiring the final-year seniors around you, to becoming those very seniors yourselves, and inspiring the rest of us? You and I both know that this growth didn’t take place just inside classrooms. This growth took place in the lively halls of Gajjar, MTB, Bhabha, Nehru, Tagore, and Swami, during those chill sessions and endless conversations in hostel rooms echoing with the joyous laughter of your best friends. It happened when you learnt how to do innumerable types of work in clubs, committees, and councils without eliciting angry screams from infuriated seniors. It happened when you discovered that sometimes, the best teachers in life are the friends around you, who you once assumed to be brainless. Through the well-crafted words and illustrations of this magazine, prepare to be transported back into the past, when ED sheets were the worst of your problems and discovering SVNIT and the beautiful city of Surat were your primary concerns. Read wonderful stories, diary entries, and letters about college life and relive the best moments from the past 4 or 5 years.

The latter part of your college life may have been a series of unfortunate events, but these misfortunes do not define who you are. You are the batch that had mixed divisions in first year, interacted with people of all cliques, and made countless lifelong friends even from other branches. You are a batch of exceptionally talented artists, singers, musicians, dancers, coders, debaters, orators, tech wizzes, writers, designers, and leaders. And, most importantly, when people ask you what Sparsh and IGNIS are, you’ll be able to answer. The world may or may not need more scientists, engineers, or MBA graduates. However, the world definitely needs you. Never undermine yourself or your talents. Others will already be trying to do that; why help them? Your experiences till now have prepared you to carve your own path through life and tackle any challenge you face in the future with paramount conviction. Now, I’d like to thank the brilliant team of writers and designers at Renesa who constantly strive to get better and produce top-quality work. This magazine exists only because of their dedication and hard work. On behalf of Renesa, I’d like to express my utmost gratitude to all our seniors for guiding us over the past few years and instilling confidence in us to succeed. This magazine would not be possible without the steadfast support of our faculty advisors, who’ve helped us in every way. And most importantly, thank you, dear readers, for your unwavering readership, for always appreciating our work, and for motivating us to keep going. Lastly, an important message for all my batchmates and juniors: although the situation may seem hopeless right now, there’s always light at the end of the tunnel. In the words of Steve Rizzo, “Don’t wait for the storms of your life to pass. Learn to dance in the rain.” I know how difficult and frustrating it is to be away from college for over a year; I’ve been through the same. However, we must make the most of the time we have at home, learn whatever we can, and nurture ourselves and our friends. Because when we step through those blue and white gates we’ve been craving after so long, and embrace our friends, it will all be worth it.

“Because even though things didn’t go as planned, at least we have these things to laugh about during a trip down memory lane.” Your college life is definitely one of the most important phases of your life. When you look back at it, what is the first thing that pops into your mind? The times you spent with your irreplaceable friends, laughing so hard that one of them sounds like a seal? Or is it the endless hours you spent cafe-hopping? Whatever it may be, the experiences you’ve had over these past years are unforgettable. As another year comes to a close, let me take you through a journey of the pre-Corona times, when online classes weren’t a thing and weekends were for road-tripping and hanging out with friends. You remember that feeling when you’re driving down a highway in a Zoomcar at 100 km/h, with your AUX connected and the speakers blasting your throwbacks playlist? You’ve heard these songs so many times that every lyric is ingrained in you, and yet, they never get old. The bass is vibrating the car, the AC is on full and the energy, unmatched.

At this point, you’re jamming at the top of your lungs, thinking you and your friends should drop out of college and start a band. As the chorus comes, every single one of you lets out the rock star prowling deep within the depths of your soul. Air guitars, DIY microphones, and finger drums come to life and at that moment, your entire world seems to freeze with one realization — the realization of how much these people mean to you. After a while, the excitement levels have died down and the lo-fi playlist is being played instead. The onceclear sky is now scattered with clouds and you distractedly watch the blurred landscapes whizz by. The mellow beats of the music lull you into a mind space where all your problems seem trivial and you are completely at peace. With your head leaning against the window, you glance across at the driver’s seat, marvelling at the amount of trust you have put in your friend’s driving. The car is still

moving at 100 km/h but life seems to have slowed down. It feels like a music video. In the backseat, your friends are struggling to stay awake. Eyes crinkling with a tired smile, you turn the AC down a little and reach back to adjust a blanket across their bodies. With their glasses resting crookedly on their face, you watch as their eyes flutter to a close, finally succumbing to the claws of sleep. A few hours later, a hand on your shoulder shakes you awake. You have reached your destination and the night has officially begun. Somehow, between the salt and the lemons, the night passes in a blur of things you are probably better off not remembering. The next thing you recall is waking up late on a Sunday, so late that even the birds aren’t chirping anymore. As you stretch out your legs and head off to inspect the damage done the night before, you smile to yourself. It’s the morning after a party night. Sunlight’s fluttering in through the glass doors and the summer breeze is softly

9 teasing the curtains. It’s a good day. The smell of waffles wafts through the air and you hear light laughter in the kitchen. Next door, the dog is barking on the porch and you find yourself slow dancing with someone to your friend’s horribly off-key singing. Pancakes and omelettes, forgotten amidst the ruckus, are burning on the stove as you unsuccessfully try to sidestep the remnants of a mine which exploded overnight. A brand new carpet of confetti, chips, and empty bottles now embellishes the floor. It’s messy, it’s chaotic, but it’s good. Life’s good. Later in the garden, you are armed with

a lemonade in one hand and a book in another. You put on your sunglasses, lay your head in someone’s lap, and pray you don’t get hit by the football. After nursing a hangover and cleaning up the mess from last night, you’re one step away from heading into hibernation. The setting rays of the sun colour the sky a gentle pink. It’s twilight. In a distance, arguments break out over the barbecue set up for dinner, but you are unbothered, dozing off to the rumble of a voice reading to you and a hand softly stroking your hair.

make college life such an incredible experience — the moments we so fondly look back on and reminisce over. And it is these little and big things that make us appreciate it all a little more. So, as we sign off on another year, I’d like to remind you to cherish all the silly, ridiculous, yet wonderful memories you made with your people and the struggles you overcame by sticking together (both offline and online). Because even though things didn’t go as planned, at least we have these things to laugh about during a trip down memory lane.

Walking up the last flight of stairs, I think to myself: I hope he doesn’t notice. It’s 14:00, i.e., time for the energysapping, brain-hammering ED lab session. Sheet No. 5 is due today. Every week, I feel pride in showcasing my masterpiece of a HW sheet, but today is different — I’ve just heedlessly

traced Figure-4 from the sample drawing sent to us through our class WhatsApp group. The reason behind this delinquency? Excessive bingewatching of Suits with my roomie for 7 days straight. The show is really good. You must watch it if you haven’t. Anyway, the sinking feeling of Figure-4 being incorrect is doing me

Secretly dejected that my record of a 9.5/10 on every HW sheet so far is inevitably about to be broken, I try to remain perfectly inconspicuous in a crowd of drawn, dragged faces along the corridor towards the lab. I pull out my phone, the very phone I watched the series on, the phone that is causing my downfall, and turn on DND mode. I then proceed to find my seat

and end up with a stool ridiculously low compared to the others. It’s too late to swap mine with another. Well, it looks like I’m the unlucky one today. After carefully unloading the drafter and other delicate freight, we pin our sheets to the board. In the mentioned process, the following things fall off my desk, awaiting retrieval: my extra sheets, eraser, roller scale, and my patience. I set the drafter hastily as sir begins the construction. After I’m done picking up the stationery (set aside the perennially irretrievable eraser), I look up. I can barely read the title on the green board. Glad to leave the chair, I advance towards the board (and my friend) to wrap my head around today’s topic.

miss this a couple of years from this day. It is time for us to begin with the construction, so we head back to our desks like a flock of birds in the evening. After adequate (rather extra) discussion and discord with my desk neighbours, I complete 2 out of 4 figures. It is now that the amicablebut-mighty faculty comes around to my desk to evaluate the past week’s assignment. Yikes. He casually advises me to buy a better compass and commands me to pull out my HW Sheet No. 5, bringing my heart into my throat. While reluctantly setting my sheet for him to check, I reply, “lol, okay sir.”

Soon, all my classmates huddle around for the same purpose — some sharing a single stool, some resting on their mate’s shoulder, some very possessive of their assigned space, some standing upright with attention. It’s unbearably moist and pungent from the summer heat and humidity, but hey, at least I have my friend next to me to complain to now.

Am I going to buy that new ‘mechanical’ compass? Well, mine works perfectly.

After two painfully long minutes, he scrawls a 9.5/10 and moves on to his next victim. Wait. 9.5? How? Hereafter, all those hours trying to solve questions myself will most definitely be postponed to a night before midsems. Amused and happy, I quickly finish my classwork sheet and chat around with others in the room. Even the bee hovering around my ear doesn’t bother me anymore. After half an hour of finessing my sheet, whining about my sore back from the strenuous drawing, and frowning at my friends’ silly jokes, it’s 17:30. We’re finally free to leave the lab and head straight to the vada pav stall outside campus. With a hungry stomach and a story to tell, I’m sure I wouldn’t want the day to end any other way.

Oh no, has he spotted the error? “—need to improve your uppercase handwriting.”

With a smirk, I realize that this unwilling mistake has just kicked off a whole new era.

11 Dear Batch of ’21 We started on a desperate note whilst you were into IITs, heartbroken with high school and dearly missing your home; the entire episode was disarrayed. At first, I figured we could hit it off as you ticked almost all the boxes to get here, to me. But everything has an expiry date and it was more literal in our case. The relieving thing for us was that we were aware of the ill-fated date and we embraced it. Both of us tried our best to get through these years, but we are aware of how toxic it got. You kept expecting me to change, and yet, major introspection lacked on your part. Things work out only when efforts are taken from both the sides. Barring all the ugliness, we did have our share of experiences, ups and

downs, smiles, and frowns. Sure, things got rough at times, especially towards the end, but I will dearly miss you. Albeit all the adversities, we did have our moments — the jittery first meetings, the canteen dates, endless conversations at the lawns, and much more. Long distances are tough and that period was certainly the most challenging for us. It’s an incredibly bizarre, unconventional way for us to part, and I’m glad we overcame the difficulties. It was nice to see you when you came to collect your stuff. Although I could not give you a proper farewell, we can say our goodbyes now.

like to wish you my heartfelt luck as you begin a new chapter in your life. I hope you continue seeking your great perhaps. The logical start for making any film would be to look for a story, or hire writers. But if you are planning on making a film that actually earns money in Bollywood, you should know better. The first step is to hire a 21-year-old narcissistic, pompous, and ignorant Bhatt, Kapoor, or Dhawan. Now, the common misconception is that they need to know acting; stay away from such rumours. Just make sure that they have shaved chests and sleek abs, and you’re good to go, my friend. Next comes the shoot location and set design. Conventionally, you might be inclined to go for an authentic set in India that shows real education. Rookie mistake. You are required to shoot abroad in a set that in no way resembles actual high schools and colleges back in our beloved country. Your producers might ask you if we really need 46 iPads and Italian marble floors in each classroom and all of the extras (out of which 80% are

not Indians) wearing Gucci or Armani apparel? Duh! After all, nothing appeals to us desis more than those random goras in the background and unrealistic portrayal of our culture. Let us leave the authenticity to Christopher Nolan, Martin Scorsese, and other nitwits. Moving on to more important topics — spicy dance numbers. Some so-called ‘experts’ might tell you that it is humiliating to have them, but take it from Karan and I, go nuts on the item songs. After all, is it even a successful Bollywood movie if you haven’t objectified at least 3-4 heroines and ruined 1-2 old classic songs? Let’s come to character arc and development. Can you ever get it wrong with the friends, then rivals, to friends again concept? Never. Then why experiment when your audience wants the same old crap? Make sure to make at least one of the leads filthy rich to explain those extravagant party songs and make one lead really

Chaiwala: See, I went to give tea in that tent over there. One strange-looking man called me and asked me if I knew how to bat. All these years, I slacked. Was reserved from everyone around But knowing that this day would never come back, I mustered up courage like a hound.

I remember the day when my heart bid me adieu, I saw him sitting in a corner with a pair of glasses As he looked up at me from a book on Op-Amps, I knew The card in me was a heart, but I was bound by the societal aces.

I froze as he faced me with his dazzling look He stood alone like a soul unknown Spirit within, I fluttered open like a book As if the wind had just blown.

Disclaimer: This rulebook should not be taken lightly. It contains guidelines that could potentially save your life during your time in SVNIT. If found without the handbook, your social standing will drop substantially. Use this ONLY in case of emergencies.

POWER CUT: 1. Being alone in the dark with your roommate can be quite scary, keep your defenses up and turn on the phone’s flashlight. 2. Don’t panic in the face of a rough night. 3. As this situation could devolve into a free for all, it is advisable to forget that your friends exist. Call up the people who decide your fate in academics and ask them if you could spend the night (a simple exchange of favours). UNEXPECTED GUESTS: 1. One can easily forget the nearing judgement day while being warm-boxed with your pals, causing confusion when a knock is heard. 2. Don’t panic in the face of expulsion. 3. Pull out your handy backup sachet prepared for just these kinds of situations. Confidently open the door, hand them the offering, and continue with your session. CURFEW: 1. If one unfortunately finds themselves outside the campus past curfew, it should be their top concern to get back as soon as possible. 2. Don’t panic in the face of your parents threatening to unenroll you from college. 3. Book a heli on your trusty UberAir app and request a parachute. 4. While flying towards the campus, keep in mind that

the airspace above MTB is restricted. Make sure you manage to jump off and land safely before the F-15s are deployed. BACKLOG: 1. In the highly unlikely case of failing your supplementary exams, one might find themselves in a sticky case of recurring backlogs. 2. Don’t panic in the face of an extra year in SVNIT. 3. Use your Tor browser and hire a capable coder that can set your record straight (at the source). ED SHEETS DUE TOMORROW: 1. It’s quite common that one finds themselves with bundles of sheets to be submitted the next day, and it takes immense dedication to finish the job. 2. Don’t panic in the face of actually doing the sheets. 3. Head over to the civil engineering lab and use the 3-D printer to manifest your completed sheet from thin air. INTERVIEW: 1. July 28th, 2017 Dear Diary, Today was filled with hope, excitement, and honestly, a bit of restlessness. After 15 years of constantly moving and going to multiple schools, I was finally here. Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology, Surat. My morning started with the alarm blaring in my ears, commanding me to wake up. For some reason, even the alarm was like music to my ears. I must have slept only for an hour, as most of my night was lost fantasizing about my first day. Just the adrenaline of a new adventure was more than enough to keep me up all night (the stiff bed also added to the cause). I wore one of my best outfits (which I had planned since the beginning of summer). Thinking about it now makes me wonder if I went a little overboard. I mean, the whole class stared at me like I was some kind of a clown. Or maybe I just forgot to wipe my face after breakfast. Anyway, I reached my class at 8:15 am to get the perfect mid-row seats and mark my territory. Staring

Well, for starters, I completely bombed my maths paper but I’m still praying to get above a 12. It was a tough paper anyway, even the class toppers said so. However, in all honesty, last night seems kind of a blur. I shouldn’t have gone to Supal’s room, especially the night before my maths exam. As I made my way to her room, I contemplated if this was the right thing to do. Even my left eyebrow started to twitch (should have believed in my mother’s superstitions). Anyhow, upon knocking aggressively several times, Supal finally opened her room. Much to my surprise, it looked like she was studying. As I started to leave with the notes which I initially came for, a “brilliant” idea crossed her mind. “Why don’t you come and study in my room?” she asked. At that moment it felt like the perfect plan. Two friends studying together, helping each other through the difficult problems. What could go wrong? Little did we know that our tedious night study session would end up with us in a dumpster, desperately trying to find the answer key. However, all the bad news aside, I did discover an insane band called Pink Floyd.

January 10th, 2020 Dear Diary, Been too busy to write lately. It’s the second consecutive week of me oversleeping. I missed my breakfast but was just 5 minutes late to the first class. I count that as an achievement! It’s the same old routine. Get up, go to regular classes, attend my CAT classes, work a little, and sleep. Lately, I haven’t been feeling motivated to do anything. I’ve been buried in an ocean of coursework and can’t find any good internships. Man, they meant it when they said engineering is hard! These days, I can’t find time to call my parents, hang out with my friends, or even go to the bathroom for more than 10 minutes. Ankit seems worried about me. He is adamant about imposing the “fact” that I am not serious enough about my future. I am trying, aren’t I? Why is that not enough? Oh wait, I forgot to do my laundry again! Dammit. Sob story apart, today officially marks the consumption of my 150th pizza in this college. A huge milestone. Domino’s should have made me their mascot by now. I basically remember the names of all their pizzas by heart. This makes me feel a bit proud of myself. Oh and that reminds me, exercise is officially extinct in my life. The last time I picked up a dumbbell was about 2 years ago.

May 7th, 2021 Dear Diary, The big day has finally arrived. Today was our last exam. So, in theory, today marked our last day. I don’t know whether I feel glad or upset about these four years coming to an end.

I have always thought about this day — finally stepping into the “real world,” making a name for ourselves. But what I also thought about was saying my final goodbyes. Hugging every single person in my class (most of whose names I still can’t remember), saying thank you to all my teachers (even the ones I hated with utmost passion), pranking our warden one last time. Even just one last night out with all my friends. I always imagined the end of college to be a transition period filled with mixed emotions of melancholic excitement. However, COVID denied me the chance to feel any of it. These digital farewells don’t quite hit the same. No graduation ceremonies. No farewell parties. No last day group pictures. No campus interviews. My biggest (and probably the silliest) worry of tripping on the stage while trying to get my diploma has been robbed by the pandemic. I have been stripped off of my “papa kehte hain” moment. It feels as though my bitter farewell happened a year ago. I haven’t seen any of my friends in over a year. I didn’t get to hug them or tell them how much I will miss them. I didn’t even get the chance to say how grateful I am for every single person who was a part of my entire college journey. As I sit here writing this, I realise that I never got the chance to beg someone to let me go shower first because I will be late for class, or ask the breakfast lady for one more dosa. Never got to sleep in class or say, “I didn’t study either for the test,” to my friends, one last time. My last day to do everything that’s been done every day for the past 4 years never came. My chest feels heavy and I can feel the sorrow taking over. I didn’t think I would even feel this sadness. Everyone knows that college ends. However, no one really knows what to do when that “end” has been taken away from you.

“When I head to my hostel mess, the heavenly aroma of gourmet delicacies awaits me.” I don’t miss home these days. It seems like only a month ago that I joined the institute. It was, in fact, just a month ago. Somehow, my excitement has not waned even a bit in all these days. I spring out of bed with bubbling enthusiasm in the morning, and after the swim at the on-campus swimming pool, I come back to my gorgeous hostel. When I head to my hostel mess, the heavenly aroma of gourmet delicacies awaits me. I smile. It seems like I am doing that a lot these days, not because it takes considerably fewer muscles than frowning, but because life’s full of roses and sunshine at the campus. They say ignorance is bliss. Well, if that’s true, then my institute must be ignorance. After my hearty breakfast, I take one of the four functional elevators to reach the ground floor. I smile because there’s no overcrowding at all. As I exit the hostel premises, I see 9 squeaky clean buses lined up in a queue in front of the building. The institute wants its services to be readily available to everyone. They are a considerate bunch. I look forward to the classes as I sit down in one of

those inviting buses with a driver who loves his job. The classes are amazing! You see, professors in my college know exactly what they’re teaching and have a knack for explaining seemingly dull, insipid concepts in a way that makes you not want to quit engineering and look for alternative professional avenues. Today is a half day, I realize with my heart sinking. I really look forward to my lab sessions. Oh well, at least it’s just the start of the week. Plenty of time before the dreadful weekends come knocking on the funfest. That makes me chirpy again. I reach my hostel room after another delicious lunch at the mess. Isn’t it wonderful when authorities care? I have heard horror stories about hostel messes serving food with non-edibles such as hair follicles, thumb-pins, and the occasional baby cockroaches. Boy, am I glad that’s not my problem to deal with. These people always dot their t’s and cross their i’s. As I settle down at my desk in my air-conditioned hostel room, I feel

reinvigorated at the prospect of revising what was taught today in class. After a stretch of four hours of studying, I head out through the thoroughly sanitized and centrally air-conditioned corridors towards the bathroom for a quick shower. I stand before one of the many unbroken, spotless mirrors and wash away all the germs and bacteria from my face. Don’t you just love it when there are no suspicious-looking water puddles in your washrooms? It sure does light up my day. Other college hostels have institutions for redressal of complaints and grievances. We don’t have one because there’s nothing to complain about in the first place. “Excuse me sir, I’d like to complain about the fully-equipped, ultra-modern, bleeding edge, stateof-the-art geysers in the washroom.” Can you imagine anyone ever saying that? Oh, I lost track of time again. I figure that I need to hurry up. I definitely don’t want to miss the opening ceremony of the annual EDM night.

Bittu: True. I wonder if they’ll ever be grateful to us for that.

Kannu Bhai: Hallway cleaner. Veteran like Jayanti bhai. Hates the kids. Bittu: Wash area cleaner. New to the job. Doesn’t hate the kids because he is one himself.

Kannu Bhai: (scoffs, filling the room with smoke) Grateful? Those kids are never going to be grateful. They are so full of themselves, they don’t even see us. Jayanti Bhai: Speak for yourself. They didn’t see you because they hated you, and you hated them. You had no business ratting them out for finishing their drawing assignments as a group activity.

An empty room in the hostel. After finishing the tiring task of cleaning all the empty hallways, Jayanti Bhai and Kannu Bhai are sitting on a mattress-less bed. Bittu enters with three paper cups and chai in a pouch. He settles down on the ground.

Kannu Bhai: (smirks) Can’t believe you’re so naive. Of course, you wouldn’t tell on your “precious” little kids. They are just a bunch of ungrateful miscreants who will never realize nor appreciate how much we care of them.

Jayanti Bhai: (looking around the empty room) I wonder how these kids are putting up at home.

Bittu: Say whatever, but they are obviously entertaining. Without all of the crazy things that they come up with, we would never have The Chronicles of Shenanigans.

Bittu: Tied up back at their parents’ house? Hahaha, pretty sure they miss their freedom.

Kannu Bhai: (coughs) They won’t be so ungrateful if they knew about the books. (coughs)

Kannu Bhai: (lighting his beedi) After all, the freedom we

21 Man, that would be so evil. Jayanti Bhai: (smiling at just the thought of those books) It’s been so many years since I started writing them. I think it was the batch of 2001-02, the year where I joined those kids for one of their late-night sessions. The headache I got the next day made sure I never did that again. Bittu: There is no way I’m going to believe you did that. Not when you scolded me for doing the same last year! I gotta say this, that last batch was my personal favorite and I think they gave us the best book. The thing with that water cooler? Can you believe them? Seemed straight out of a Bassi show, right? (looks around hoping to catch a reaction, getting none) Jayanti Bhai: It’s hard to choose a favourite when you have seen them go about year after year. You might not remember the names, but the faces and their mischiefs stick around. Kannu Bhai: Why do you always sound like you’re in love with those kids? (shaking his head) The books have visual proof of what the 2016-17 batch did to the hostel. Jayanti Bhai: (takes a sip of his chai, a reminiscent smile on his face) That one kid from room D-214 broke the hallway camera, and then his absolutely loyal friend decided to keep it as a decoration in his room. Also had the guts to claim he brought it from his home. Bittu: Hahaha, I think one of the books has a photo of him posing while holding the camera like a trophy. Iconic! Kannu Bhai: I’m pretty sure that book also mentions how his room was the one that always used to smell. (addressing Jayanti Bhai) I can’t believe you still let him get away with it. Jayanti Bhai: Well don’t you see? That’s the difference between you and I. I write in the books for my memories’ sake. You, on the other hand, think of it as some sort of leverage against the kids. Bittu: (sigh) Well I can’t wait to write in them. If it wasn’t for this lockdown, do you think I could have written about my first arson case? Kannu Bhai: Is that really what you wanna write about? Bittu: Man, why have I missed out on so much? All I’ve seen is how their stupid water fight led to setting the bathroom geyser on fire. Kannu Bhai: Well, if it’s any consolation, every few years, the books seem to keep repeating themselves. Jayanti Bhai: You’re on a roll. I think that’s the second correct thing you’ve said today. Bittu: What do you mean, repeat themselves? Kannu Bhai: (lighting another beedi) Well, every few years, they create a fire. Almost every year, they find a way to break the locks on the terrace doors. Then they burst crackers even when it’s nowhere near Diwali. And how can I forget, every year, without fail, they have some interwing beef, something about which state they’re from. The outcome, more often than not, is graffiti on the walls. Jayanti Bhai: (finishing off his chai, suddenly sad) Well, I don’t think we’ll be seeing any graffiti this year. Nor will there be any Chronicle of 2020-21. And I don’t know about you, but I don’t like the look of these empty hallways. These hostels were meant to be the place where the kids spawned all their notorious ideas, and in the end, they would leave this place with their hearts brimming with memories of these ideas put into effect. Kannu Bhai: (rolling his eyes) Of course, you’re the one who romanticizes about the graduation of people who aren’t even your own children. Bittu: But if you saw them leaving with a heavy heart, why didn’t you let them have copies of the books? Jayanti Bhai: Because I never wanted them to know that even with the broken hallway cameras, we were always watching them, looking out for them. I did not know how they would’ve reacted to that. Kannu Bhai: (scoffs) I’m quite literally repulsed by your emotions right now. Why would you wanna give them away to graduated kids? Call it a business plan or whatever but the ones who need the books the most are the newcomers of 2020-21. I bet we would get a decent price for an archive that tells them how their life in a hostel would’ve been like. Jayanti Bhai: There you go again with your greedy ideas, and you say that the kids are miscreants? Those books will never fall into the hands of a student, not under my watch. (dramatically exits the room) Bittu: (giggling, whispers) Do you really think we could make money off these books? Kannu Bhai: (smiles, then winks)

“As far as I can see, the ground is covered by trees, bushes, and dense leaves. What the hell happened last night?”

Ahhh, why is everything so bright? I groan. My eyes flutter open but instantly shut back to a close as they’re flooded by an angry beam of sunlight. I shield them with my hands and sit up straight, wincing as my head starts pounding. How late did I sleep in today? This is the 13th class I’m missing this semester. Harish sir will kill me. Expecting to feel the familiar plastic case in my fingers, I reach behind me for my phone. Third lecture must have started by now. Instead of my trusty phone, I touch something furry. “Squeak-SQUEEEEAKKK!” My eyes shoot open as the shrill squeaks of an animal pierce my ear. I watch in utter disbelief as a very terrified squirrel scampers up a nearby tree, squeaking as if he’s dying. What in the world is going on? I look back down at the place I was lying just a minute ago, fully awake now thanks to that adrenaline rush. No pillow, no bed. There are just

leaves and twigs there. I swerve my head around on both sides, my heart pounding against my chest. “Hello, is anyone there?” I bellow. I am answered by the chirps of a few birds. The sunlight is piercing through the canopy, illuminating a few sections of the ground. As far as I can see, the ground is covered by trees, bushes, and dense leaves. What the hell happened last night? All the memories seem so foggy. I groan again as my stomach rumbles loudly. I can’t remember anything from yesterday. I check my pockets for my phone. Maybe I left it there. My pockets are empty too. What do I do now? A sinking feeling sets in my chest. There’s no use sulking. I need to figure out where I am. With nothing but the clothes on my back, I set out to scout the area to find something useful. After walking around in what seems like circles for 20 whole minutes, the

rumbling in my stomach becomes unbearable. I’ve looked everywhere. No water, no fruits, no berries, no mushrooms. There’s nothing around to eat or even drink. I collapse on a large rock, devastated. I’ll never find my way back home. I start weeping. My emotional breakdown is interrupted by a series of loud grunts. I look up to locate the source of these strange sounds. In the distance, I see three little pigs walking around, grunting nonchalantly. My stomach growls again, much louder this time, and I wince in pain. I’ve never had pork in my life, but the prospect doesn’t sound too bad right now. I think back to all those Man vs Wild episodes I watched as a kid and ask myself, “Is this a sign?”. Maybe Bear Sensei was preparing me for this moment. I’ve never eaten a single animal in my life (my entire family is vegetarian). But right now, I don’t think that matters. My extreme hunger and primal hunting urges kick in, egging me on to take this decision.

I NEED TO KILL THOSE PIGS.

I quickly get up and crouch behind the large rock I was crying on just a minute ago. I need a plan. Ugh, I would do anything to have my phone right now. At least I could look up “How to kill a pig” on Google. Wait a minute. I did come across this one video last year while surfing through YouTube at 4 am. They said that you have to think like a predator and finish the job in a single shot. I look around for something I can use to knock my future lunch out.

I pray to the Wakandan god of hunting, kiss my rock for luck, and throw it towards the pig.

After frantically searching for tools, my gaze falls upon 2 heavy but sharp-looking rocks. I’ve only got 2 shots. The video from earlier told me that I must hit the pig straight above the eyes. I can’t miss. As I’m preparing to throw the rock with every ounce of strength in my skinny arms, I suddenly hear the rustling of leaves behind me. Paralyzed by fear, I crouch behind the rock again, hoping that it’s not some other predator who watched the same video. The sun blinds me as I hear a hissing sound. Oh, it’s just a snake. I’ve encountered plenty of these in my time at college. These little guys are harmless. It’s only the

“CAWWWWW.” I missed. I had not accounted for my terrible aim. It looked so much easier in that video. The crow I hit wasn’t moving, but the pigs were still happily grunting away. I remind myself to practice my aim in the future if I make it out of this alive. I take aim again and throw the second rock. The pig lets out a bloodcurdling squeal and runs off with its friends, crashing into a few trees as it escapes. There goes my lunch. With tears in my eyes, I pluck a leaf from a nearby tree and start chewing on it. Tastes like spinach. I look at the tall tree in front of me and an idea pops into my mind. What if I climb this tree? In a last-ditch effort to save myself and find a way back to civilization, I summon all the strength in my limbs. Fuelled by desperation, I make my way to the top of the tree and look around. What I see makes me dizzy again. Gajjar Bhavan is a stone’s throw away. How had I missed that road during my scouting earlier? I decide to get back down and make

my way to the main road. I look down and feel like throwing up. The tree’s too high. I thought I had gotten over my fear of heights already, but I was terribly mistaken. I can’t move my hands. They aren’t letting go of the branches. I look back towards Gajjar Bhavan and notice 2 humanoid figures looking in my direction from the terrace. “HELP! Please help me!” I bellow as loud as I can. Meanwhile at the Gajjar terrace: Harkeerat: (pointing) Bro, do you see that dude on that tree? I seriously think that’s an actual person. Ishan: (emitting a few clouds) Nah bro, can’t be. Who goes into that forest anyways? Must be a peacock. Harkeerat: (emitting a few clouds of his own) Broooo, these peacocks sound more and more like humans everyday, haha. We should invite one of them on our podcast haha. That’d be funnnnn. Ishan: I like peacocks man. Nice idea. They’re just really loud sometimes.

The only blemish in the otherwise well-crafted story is the abrupt end, which makes the reader crave for a sequel. Overall, Andhali Gali suits the breed of avid Gujarati readers of suspense, thrill, and a tinge of romantic-comedy. With a decent consistency of humor, gloom, anger, and empathic pain, clubbed with a gripping storyline, this novel caters to fans of all sorts of entangling stories. quadriplegic. John decides to join Alcoholics Anonymous to try and turn his life around and meets his sponsor Donnie (played by Jonah Hill). As the movie progresses, their strengthening bond is portrayed vital for John’s recovery. After a spiritual awakening, Callahan finally decides to quit drinking and starts spending his sober days doodling offensive cartoons. Eventually, Callahan forgives the people who wronged him and achieves nirvana, allowing him to live the rest of his life free from regret and alcohol. Apart from the brilliant cinematography, the dialogues are the movie’s hard-hitters. Coupled with Phoenix’s and Hill’s impeccable acting, their relationship is the highlight of the movie. Jonah Hill claimed that his performance in this movie was by far the best in his

career. Riddled with metaphors and thought-provoking quotes, this movie will take you on a roller coaster of emotions. This film can be described in just two words: refreshing and complete. Director Gus Van Sant does a phenomenal job of portraying the pain and troubles of an alcoholic and how it can ruin one’s life. He uses the twelve steps of Alcoholics Anonymous, which includes a fair share of religion and spirituality as the backbone of John’s revival. The movie can also be seen as a commemoration of the twelve steps and how effective it can be for some people. The camaraderie associated with student chapters, friend groups, clubs, and similar communities is an emotion that every university student is familiar with. This highlyvalued kinship is the basis of this 23-episode anime. Weaving a tale of 10 diverse characters as they navigate the turbulent currents of college life and human relationships, this show appeals to people from all walks of life. Run with the Wind follows Kansei University Track Club as they struggle to run at the prestigious “Hakone Ekiden”, a relay-marathon race where the track is divided into 10 legs and run by teams of 10 over 2 days. The club members had originally gathered with the sole purpose of cheap accomodation that the University provides to members of the track

club. The ragged bunch at the club are far from capable of running any long distance marathon, let alone such a prestigious one. It seems like a futile task but they soon find themselves sucked into the enthusiasm of their captain. As each member comes to terms with the task at hand, they put in the effort to fight their limitations and achieve their goal. The anime is grounded in reality; it’s not a shonen anime where the protagonist ploughs through situations with the power of his feelings but rather a more subtle approach that shows people dealing with their problems head-on with the help of their friends. The whole story revolves around one simple fact: running is more mentally demanding than it is physically. Running is something that everybody is capable

of; it’s something that we have the potential to do, yet we are limited by ourselves. The anime epitomizes the struggle of someone who has never run as they overcome hurdles to find the strength to complete a marathon. The experience is enriched by the well-timed and beautifully-scored original soundtracks (OSTs) that accompany the viewers throughout the anime. The detailed visuals of the islands of Japan captivate the viewers as the anime takes them on a journey through the hills of Hakone. Although you might find character art lacking in scenes where the focus is on the commentary, it is overshadowed by the elements that make this anime such a refreshing entry in the sport genre.

Revamped designing skills, augmented practical knowledge, and hands-on learning experience are a result of our participation in these events. Electric go-kart has stupendous achievements, having a broad motive of shifting focus to electrification and future development of mobility. The go-kart cleared several rounds successfully for being consistent champions for 3 years.

Phoenix Aero

Phoenix Aero, SAE, is the official aero-design team of SVNIT. We are a group of aviation enthusiasts who aim to discover and recreate aerial vehicles’ uncharted cosmos to develop solutions to real-world problems. Established in August 2019, the Student Chapter has seen significant growth. The keen interest in aeromodelling and growing curiosity in this field has motivated us to become the team we are today. Under the guidance and mentorship of our Faculty Advisors, Dr. H. B. Mehta, Dr. Vimal Patel and Dr. Naresh Yarraksetty, we have planned, designed, and crafted 3 Aircrafts - Pegasus, AtmosX, and the flagship aircraft

of 2020, Xpartan, which is yet to be manufactured. The team has a growing e-community of aeromodelling enthusiasts on Discord with over 200 members. We have also conducted a week-long workshop which enhanced the skills of students in aeromodelling. After each workshop, group contests were held for the participants to incorporate the skills learnt during the session. We’re looking forward to enhancing our projects and engaging in competitions in which top teams from all over the country compete. The sky is not the limit for us and we hope to achieve greater heights in the upcoming terms.

Nirvana NIRVANA - A reason to smile. “Everyone who knows a little can teach a little.” Nirvana is a social initiative student chapter taken up by our college to provide primary education and moral values to underprivileged children in and around the campus. This activity is volunteered by the students of SVNIT. Volunteers pick up children from in and around the campus and teach them at the LT2 Seminar hall after classes everyday. The primary focus is basic education and awareness. Many fun activities like yoga, drawing, rangoli, and rakhi-making are carried out on weekends. We also celebrate Holi, Diwali, Uttarayana, and other festivals with them to educate them about the festivals and cultures of India. However, due to the unprecedented times of last year, it was not possible. We will keep trying to find new ways to help the children and look forward to it now more than ever before.

Drishti

Drishti DRISHTI is the technical-hobby club of NIT Surat. It aims to inculcate technical knowledge among the students and represents NIT Surat on both national and international levels. We give rise to intellectual and curious minds that accumulate technical aspects in a productive and optimised way. We also strengthen their social quotient by providing real-time opportunities to work as a team in a competitive, ethical environment where we work in different fields, ranging from Machine Learning to Structural Designing and from Aeronautics to Automated Systems. The club is progressively working and upholding its motive of being a place where “We comes before me”. Orientation Orientation is the commencing session for the first-year students to give them an overview of Drishti. It’s the first interaction of the club with the first-year students, where we tell them what we do in Drishti, how we do it, and how they can be a part of it in the future. Makerspace It is one of the most significant events organised solely for first-year minds. This provides an impression of what happens at Drishti and an outstanding opportunity for them to acquire knowledge and develop skills. Students are given a challenging-yet-enlightening project which has to be completed within a time limit. Mentors are assigned to each team who guide and help them throughout the

project to overcome challenges faced throughout the project’s completion. Technovation & Workshops Neither the lockdown nor the monotonous routine could dampen the enthusiasm and the spirit to make projects and learn new softwares for the freshmen. Keeping this in mind, Drishti organised a plethora of technical workshops and mind-boggling competitions based on the same. The workshops consisted of Mechanical Basics, Electronic Systems, Core of Civil Engineering and Flow Diagrams in Chemical Engineering. Next in line was the competition named TECHNOVATION, which required application of the knowledge of the topics discussed in the workshops. Intriguing branch-wise competitions of Anti-Gravity, Chemfluence, Solatronics & Anchorage turned several heads of interested students as they had a chance to explore and learn outside the regular academics. Separate problem statements were released and the students were provided with a mentor to guide them through the whole process. Finally, after brainstorming for about 24 hours, the submissions were taken, marking the end of the enriching event. Mini-Projects The recruited second-year members of the club take up this month-long project, thereby enhancing their key technical skills in their respective areas of interest. Miniprojects prepare the fundamental skills in the individuals

for the upcoming major projects. The online sessions involved various software-oriented projects like Proteus simulation, Chainless Power Transmission, Ball Balancer, IPL Prediction, Designing of Separation Membrane, and Heat Exchanger. Major-Projects These are 6-month long projects for the second-year students in which they traverse cutting-edge technology. We perpetually work on the enhancement of our projects and also participate in various competitions worldwide. This academic year, we worked on remarkable projects like Solid Propellant Rocket, Mars Rover, Tunes for Expressions, VTOL (Vertical Take-off Landing Vehicle), Farmbot, Virtual Try-On Network, Simulation of Petroleum Refinery, and Pre-Fabricated Building. We’ve had some outstanding achievements this year. These include — Robocon 2021 and Robofest 2.0. Team DRISHTI has been participating in the ABU ROBOCON competition since 2006. We participated in the competition once again this year. We successfully qualified for Stage 1 and Team Drishti successfully made it through with a score of 100/100. SCOSH

The Society for Cultivation of Science and Humanities (SCOSH) is the quintessential science club at SVNIT. Our mission is to create a scientific society-like culture at the institute by conducting events that instil a love for science in the hearts of people, and also help make the world a better place. We provide an opportunity to students with high inclination towards scientific research to meet, discuss ideas, share knowledge, do projects, and fill the gaps created due to relatively less research exposure at SVNIT. For this, we conduct workshops, seminars and lectures. It is not, however, all work and no play. We also often design fun competitions, organize night-sky gazing on important astronomical events and screen movies centred on a scientific theme. The most important duty of any such society is science-based communication, i.e., propagating science to the general public, and we achieve this through orchestrating outreach events at various schools around the city. Giving back to society during COVID-19 For benefaction and efforts in giving back to society, Team Drishti has been felicitated by an award on Diamond Jubilee from SVNIT. We were awarded for our bot DOSTAR (Differentially Operated System To Assist Recovery), designed and developed with the help of workshop professionals from SVNIT for helping and providing support to the society in the best possible way. The bot has been handovered to SMIMER Hospital, Surat and is being used to deliver food and other necessities to the patients without getting in direct contact with them. It is a 4-wheeled differentially-driven PS2 controlled bot operated over a WiFi network. This is a small step by us to support our society and nation in times of crisis.

LITERARY AFFAIRS COMMITTEE The Literary Affairs Committee is a place where people share their passions of the art of speaking, reading, and writing. It includes fierce debaters, bold orators, quirky quizzers, avid readers, and literature enthusiasts. LAC provides a platform for students to explore their interests while providing them with assistance to improve their communication skills via debates, discussions, and other speaking events. Though the 2020-21 session started with a pinch of disappointments alongside online semesters and a lot of nostalgia, LAC managed to carry on its legacy. The club began by focusing on oratory, quizzing, and literature events only for the members in the initial weeks. The first of our open events was ‘The Boardroom’ event where participants got a chance to understand the working and communication in the corporate world. With

some beautiful recitals, Wordsworth was conducted where poets poured out their hearts and the listeners bathed in the magic of words. To increase knowledge, as well as to test it, several quizzes were held, which included questions based on politics, literature, sports, cartoons, etc. As the chills of winter were fading away, LAC conducted its flagship event, Murder Mystery followed by the orientation session. The 7-day-long interview procedure was focused on giving a fair chance to every candidate to make it to this club. LAC members also participated in Asian Parliamentary Debate conducted by NIT Durgapur. The

same format was followed for a debate competition that LAC organised later. A group discussion workshop was conducted in which Asst. Professor Dr. Urvashi Kaushal guided students on how to improve upon their skills before the upcoming placement season. Apart from that, several intra-LAC quizzes, debates, and Suches were conducted to continue the celebration of the common passion we all share. A number of open GDs, debates, quizzes, and a few talks are planned for the upcoming weeks. LAC’s main objective has always been to improve the overall intellect and communication skills of its members and the campus.

DEVELOPERS’ STUDENT CLUB DSC, NIT Surat is a technical chapter of NIT Surat. In general, DSC aims to connect, learn, and grow with its community. DSC NIT Surat’s objective is to enhance the developers’ skills to a large extent. For this sole reason, the core team has conducted several webinars and hackathons that help in the enhancement of developing skills. To date, we have 450+ community members, and 350+ YouTube subscribers altogether. Our major hackathons are HackCovid and MindJam. HackCovid’s objective was to encourage projects related to the Covid scenario to help the students create solutions to existing real-life problems. MindJam aimed to help the students develop a pitch and plan for their projects transparently relative to a start-up. Our webinars include the basic understanding of hackathons, contributing to open-source projects, Git & GitHub to advance technical concepts such as Flutter, React-Redux, Cybersecurity, AI/ML endpoints, and AWS as well (everything available on our YouTube channel). With the support of students, faculties, and the core team, it was quite successful in overcoming the challenge and achieving its motto to promote computer science.

SPIC MACAY (Society for the Promotion of Indian Classical Music and Culture Amongst Youth) SVNIT Chapter has always strived to introduce the youth of today to the priceless cultural heritage of our country by organizing various events throughout the year. The youth is brought in close proximity to the eminent artists of performing traditions wherein these young people absorb not only the nuances of the art form but also the values embedded in our classical traditions. The year 2020-21 was indeed testing, but we as a student chapter grew together overcoming all the obstacles. From overcoming the challenges of lockdown to organizing online events, each volunteer of our team today has had a memorable experience working for SPIC MACAY this year. The year commenced with a beautiful Carnatic flute concert, “SWARANJALI” on 28th November 2020, by the renowned exponent of the Bamboo Flute from India - Shri Shashank Subramanyam. He has been nominated for Grammy and is a recipient of the Sangeet Natak Akademi’s senior award. The event started with an orientation programme, introducing the students of SVNIT to our movement, followed by the concert. The concert was indeed a fresh start for us as a team, as well as for the audience of SVNIT. At the end of the concert, students were given an opportunity to interact with the artist through live chat and we received an overwhelming amount of responses from the audience. The event was truly a great success for us as a first step of the year.

Witnessing the excitement of the young minds of SVNIT to know more about our cultural heritage, we organized “DHAROHAR” on 9th January, 2021. It was an online talk session on the ‘History and Restoration of Surat Fort’ by Heritage conservation expert, Architect Sumesh Modi. The event was also a kick start for celebrating the Diamond Jubilee year celebrations of SVNIT. It was indeed an enlightening session, wherein we learned new things about the history of our very own city, Surat. The talk session was followed by a question-answer session and students were very keen to gain further knowledge about the heritage of Surat. With all the challenges that lay ahead, we as a team of volunteers, hope to maintain and work harder for spreading the cause of SPIC MACAY’s movement in the coming years.

The club’s journey began with a small classroom skit, progressing to performing live plays in front of packed audiences at the production seminar hall. Now, we’ve also flourished with our digital content as a result of the pandemic.

Our year began with “Quaranteam”, a short film based on the lives of students in hostels during the imposed lockdown period. It became an instant hit among our peers, and garnered a lot of appreciation for depicting the typical struggles of a college student, stuck with his friends in the hostel, unable to do what they really like, and how they come to terms with this.

Around October, we released “How Not to Talk to Anyone” based on two ‘gurus’ who ‘help’ young men unleash their inner alpha and improve their conversational/personality skills. It was a spoof based off of your typical scamming that profits off of any naïve and gullible person who is desperate to turn their life around.

We’re also proud to have launched our first sui generis web-series under the name, “The Goldilocks Effect”. It is a conversation between five best friends, that unravels their various interests, what they had been upto, botched-up

Joyfest Joyfest is a philanthropic initiative run by the students of SVNIT, Surat. We work to spread happiness among the weaker sections of our society. We organize many events throughout the year and take various initiatives, which includes our main event Joyfest. Here we invite children from different NGOs, slums, etc. and organize a full day event for them. We involve them in various activities and encourage children to participate. It is an endeavor to convince them that they too are an integral part of our society. Grandparents’ Day at the old age home, frequent clothing drives (we collect clothes from students, faculty, employees, etc. and distribute them to the needy), Children’s Day celebration, and frequent trips to various non-governmental organizations are some of the events we organize. We would be grateful if more students came out to support and work for this initiative.

Civil Engineering Society Even in these difficult times when social distancing and work from home became the new normal, the Civil Engineering Society was successful in completing yet another exciting and challenging term completely virtually. Being the oldest student chapter of SVNIT, Surat, Civil Engineering Society has been constantly working to impart knowledge and industrial skills to the students since its inception. The world of infrastructure is a constantly evolving field with

advancements being made everyday and contribution to this field requires immense knowledge and practical hands-on experience, which, in times like these, when the entire education system went online, is not possible. CES organized multiple workshops including the STAAD Pro workshop which gave the students a chance to get a hands-on experience of softwares that would make them industry-compatible. The workshop was conducted by an expert who happens to be an alumnus of the institute. It was followed by the chapter orientation of CES in which the freshers’ batch was informed about career and future prospects in the field of Civil Engineering and also included various fun activities related to the field. The flagship event “KAIZEN 2021”, which is the annual two-day fest organized by the student chapter, was also successfully

organized, completely virtually, on 13-14 February, 2021. Being one of the biggest Departmental fests, it witnessed a huge participation from students of different institutes all across India as well as from SVNIT itself. It included various workshops and competitions which required the participants to apply basic concepts of civil engineering to win cash prizes and this also turned out to be a great source of learning. Apart from that, it also had various managerial events for those interested. Working and coordinating was a very huge challenge but the hard work and dedication of the entire team made it possible for CES to complete another successful term. The team looks forward to the same in the upcoming years.

Electrical Engineering Society

EES, the Electrical Engineering Society, is an official student chapter of the Electrical Engineering Department of NIT Surat. The pie-chart of the events, either technical or nontechnical, involve knowledge, learning, and creativity. EES proudly teaches and upholds these sections by providing a proper platform to the students and helps them to discover all interesting questions. The online interaction for the entire year made it difficult to hold events, but we successfully conducted a flurry of interesting technological and non-technical activities. This remarkable era began with ‘Inquisitive’, a quiz having questions from a bundle of general topics, which gathered the Freshers. This was followed by ‘Masked Bandits’, an online Treasure Hunt that almost made the students online nomads, hence uplifting their curiosity. Another annual event, ‘Dextrix’, covered sessions on many trending technical domains like ML, IOT, and EV, giving students a kickstart to study further.

With all legacy, the even semester was charged up with the most awaited Annual Mega Event of EES, ‘Aatish’, which was loaded with its fun, technical, and innovative events and had a large reach. We also launched a weekly blog titled ‘Techy Tuesday’, which updates our social media followers with new technological happenings. We are an active team which operates from one department but serves others too and knocking on our door will always fill you with something astonishing!

The semester was kick-started with an online test series “APTIGRIND”. This was conducted every Tuesday in the month of September 2020. APTIGRIND consisted of the best quantitative and reasoning questions we could find and was held on a virtual platform “HACKEREARTH” so as to give exposure to real-life aptitude tests conducted by companies. Soon after we had IETE ORIENTATION and MEMBERSHIP DRIVE for 2nd-year students. Next, IETE Students’ Forum conducted a hands-on workshop on Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence. It was a 2-day workshop starting from 31st October 2020. The workshop was conducted by TECH CRYPTORS, Mumbai, an ISO 9001:2015 CERTIFIED COMPANY, also in collaboration with Tirutsava Indian Institute of Technology Tirupati. The workshop was based on the functionalities of Python and R. Along with it, an online interactive webinar on the topic “Universal Object Interaction”, an advanced topic of IoT, was held. The webinar was held on the platform Google Meet on 9th January 2021. This was again presented by TECH CRYPTORS. With the arrival of the New Batch 2020, ISF organized an Orientation to introduce our activities to the new members and NI Multisim workshop on 30th January 2021 to get the Freshies acquainted with the concept of Multisim. The month of February was quite a busy one. In the beginning, an expert talk on “MOBILITY MANAGEMENT

IN 5G NETWORKS AND BEYOND 5G NETWORKS” was held via Google Meet. A novel discussion of the functional requirements from MM strategies for 5G networks took place. The Chemical Engineering Society

The Chemical Engineering Society was instituted on 16​th January, 2014. Dr. Meghal Desai, Dr. Jogender Singh, and Dr. Sarita Kalla are the current faculty advisors of the student chapter. Affiliated to the American Institute of Chemical Engineering (AIChE), ChES aims to spread knowledge and experience to future chemical engineers about Chemical Engineering education and its applications. Over the past years, the Chemical Engineering Society conducted events demonstrating innovation through fun activities and technical events. The various activities undertaken by ChES during 2020-21 are: DWSIM Workshop, DWSIM Flow Sheet Design Competition, ChemE-Car, Cordial Convo (interactive sessions in which we invite the alumni of ChES Student Chapter to share their experiences with the juniors), Alchemy: The Manufacturing Quest, Stock Up (webinar on Financial literacy), Siphon 6.0, Eureka 3.0, Placement & Internship Talk, and webinars with other AIChE Student Chapters. This year, a separate body for Public Relations was also initiated. The two significant events of ChES are Eureka & Siphon. Eureka started with an initiative to teach and elevate

research ideology among students wherein sophomores are mentored by senior years. The teams work on their decided problem statements to find a new idea/solution, i.e., optimising the same. This year, the third edition of Eureka, i.e., Eureka 3.0 (Sept 2020-April 2021), saw teams working on 18 problem statements consisting of industrial & academic backgrounds. Siphon 6.0, the Annual Departmental Fest, was completed virtually and included participation from colleges all over the Southern Asia region. A total of 13 events were

Akriti

Kirdaar has never been just a dramatics club, rather a ‘Zootopia’ where everyone can be anyone. It has been a place to de-stress, to be overdramatic, and lastly, to forget whatever lemons life has been throwing at you.

Akriti, the colour palette of CHRD, has never failed to make masterpieces whenever the members took them in their hands. Even the pandemic couldn’t constrict the immense creativity of the club. There were various events that were successfully conducted online, and the participation was overwhelming. Some new events like “Rangavali” and “Arten” were also introduced. The Sparsh wall painted by the club just before the first lockdown is the best photo station in the entire campus.

Over the years, the club has grown both in quantity and quality, creating a spectrum of personalities. This “Virtual Year” brought new shades in our work where the club witnessed socially distanced “home” productions, a mentorship program, open mics, interactive sessions with internet celebrities, and masterclasses by alumni.

Raag In this academic year, the music club of SVNIT, RAAG has been active with various competitions and workshops. A workshop for vocals was conducted to help improve singing. Since the semester is online, music editing is key, hence, workshops on audio editing softwares such as Bandlab and FL Studio were conducted. Other than this, an online singing competition called “Distunes” was organized where the members made vocal covers. The most recent competition organized was “Freshbeat”, which was exclusively for the Freshers, mentored by seniors. These performances were done in bands.

Cinephilia As the name suggests, we are the movie-making club of our college. But we are not just a movie-making club; we are a story-telling club. Members of our club are young enthusiasts who want to express their stories. We are here to help each other build those stories, and to improve upon them. We use the art form of film-making as a medium because it includes many aspects of story-telling like narration, visuals, and sounds.

39 This year, due to the pandemic, we couldn’t conduct workshops on cinematography and editing. Despite this, we were able to organise a series of activities that developed the writing skills of our members. We also conducted webinars on “Script Supervising”, “Sound for Cinema” by our fourth-year students, and “What is Storytelling” by the founder of Cinephilia, Mr. Aman Vishera. The best part of conducting events online was that we could

bring on guests fairly easily. We had Mr. Sharad Ananth with whom we conducted an interactive webinar on “How to Analyse a Film”. Mr. Biswapti Sarkar and Mrs. Jyoti Kapur Das also conducted interactive sessions. It was great to have so many activities, webinars, and sessions this year. One thing which we have learned is to deal with every situation that comes our way. If we genuinely want to learn something, nothing can stop us.

Malang Malang is more like a family than a club. People learn, practice, dance and have fun together. Malang has a variety of dancers who are good at multiple dance styles and are willing to learn from each other and improve. For amateur dancers, it’s akin to visiting a 5-star restaurant after not eating for several days straight. We regularly conduct solo dance competitions, group dance events, workshops,

online tutorials, meetings, and of course have parties! There’s also “Rubix Crew”, composed of the most talented and disciplined dancers who represent SVNIT on a bigger stage. They have participated in multiple competitions and have bagged a lot of achievements. Malang as a whole follows the motto “Have fun while learning”.

Convex Convex is the community of photography enthusiasts here at SVNIT. We are a group of people who excel in multidisciplinary genres of photography, ranging from nature all the way to landscapes and portraits. 2020 has been a difficult year for us as we are more of a hands-on crew and functioning online was a hurdle to overcome. Had it been offline, we would’ve been flooded with work from the various clubs under our parent organization CHRD,

which would help us learn and hone our skills. The online medium came with its own hindrances, but the seniors of the club welcomed freshers online, and held workshops on the basics of photography and editing. We also had an online timelapse competition. Like everyone else, Convex is also eagerly waiting for the college to re-open so that the freshers can know what it’s like to get their hands dirty.

To Everyone I landed this place exactly and a half months ago. I came all alone, from the land of Ganges, to the shore of Arabian Sea, to evolve as a better human. I was always afraid of what will happen next. I am thankful to all of you that the fear lasted just a few days. You guys have been marvellous. It is tough to express my feelings for losing more than an year because of COVID in which I could have got more from your experience. All I can say is, we’ll pass on the legacy, improved and evolved. To Everyone The pandemic has been tough on all of us. It has taught us how to live through uncertain times. But on the other hand, it has also brought most of us into an even playground for opportunities. A student living in India has almost similar opportunities compared to a student living in the USA. I was lucky enough to get to utilize the opportunity for getting some international exposure through conferences and competitions in my Final Year. It is an opportunity worth the exploration. It’s okay to curse the online college situation, but one needs to remember that this time won’t come again, and one would be defined by the choices he/she makes. I found that most SVNITians complete their tasks at the very last moment, even I was one of them but in the longer run, consistent and atomic efforts hold the key to success. Through my B.Tech, I have understood how vital Resilience and Persistence are for success. Having a belief in a particular idea and notion sounds inspiring but can be challenging to implement. However, these are the same qualities that could make the difference between a success and a failure. Through my College years, I have been lucky enough to be a part of two wonderful student chapters-ChES and CEV. I have always believed that ChES is not just about Siphon; it represents much more than that. I want the juniors to continue this legacy forward, and I believe we all can do it. My journey in ChES has taught me the essential things about how a chapter actually runs, how a well-organized team could make a difference and how the outlook of a student chapter depends on the very members it has. It’s the members and not the positions that could make a difference. Kudos to the team for conducting a really wonderful Siphon 6.0 in a unique online world. It would be true to say that CEV, CEV Seniors, and my fellow mates have been a massive part of my overall development as a person, student, and young professional. CEV has been one of the most active student chapters of our college, and the plethora of regular events that it has is proof of that. I wish CEV continues this legacy, and every member gets to benefit from the company of the members like the way I did. To LAC Juniors I’ve heard people say, “These can only be called as one of the best days of this existence.” Mine were spent with you all, so true for me. You know it, we’ve spent a lot of time criticising the Institute. But I know it, if I was given another chance, I would have come back to the same place, to meet the most amazing people in you. The days and evenings will still go by, the old library stairs, the CRC lawns, the canteen cements, old CRC, seminar hall will all remain there, and the meetings, debates, quizzes, discussions, afterparties will still be the same. Just that, I’ll miss out on them. My days at the campus ended in March, 2020. But you all lightened them up even during the unbearable online semester. All these years of memories, and it comes down to one single message. I would have wished you all a lot, but saying, “May you get an offline semester soon” would be enough to break you into tears. May the cult flourish, you know what I mean. May the department keep solving it’s investigations. May the gingershots remain sacred. May the bond among members, the biggest strength of this club, keep getting stronger. And yes, when you finally execute the Daman plan, leave out the snakes who’ve already completed Goa. Messages from SVNIT Alumni Anjana Aravind was an M.Sc. Physics student at SVNIT and graduated in the Batch of 2019. During her college days, Anjana was an active member of Renesa, spending 4 years in the club from 2015-2018. She also served as the Chief Editor of Renesa for the 2017-2018 academic year. Along with Rhishabh Goswami and Nikita Prabhu, Anjana also co-founded the Madhatters English Theatre Club in SVNIT. She’s currently working as a Climate Researcher at the company “Wind Pioneers”.

It is a well-known fact in neuroscience that until the age of twenty-five, our experiences shape our way of dealing with life; but after that age, we begin to rely exclusively on our defence mechanisms. How much do you know about your defence mechanisms?

3. In response to the previous question, do you know anything that you believe could potentially transform the field(s)? 4. What can you do, practically, for any of the ideas mentioned in the previous response?

Collectively, we’re going through a lot right now, not just in our country but in the world, and I’m sure you didn’t need me to tell you this. I’m also sure that the final years are quite aware of the enormity of what they’ll soon be up against. While most of what we hear or experience might seem entirely out of our control, the way in which we choose to react is completely our own. It is a skill to be able to choose optimism over despair and I highly recommend the former.

These are questions that can be asked at any point in your life. In my case, they’ve helped me stumble into turning my passion for climate change into a profitable career, just as they did for a friend who’s a photographer-turned-polar scientist. Something else that would help you to see all the possibilities this world has to offer is to take off your blinders; by that, I mean the prejudices, the stereotypes, the judgements, and the privileged thought process. If you can see a labourer’s life as having as much to learn from as that of your favourite entrepreneur’s, you have understood exactly what you need in order to do great things in life (if that’s your plan). Your defence mechanism is as much a part of your blinders as the other things; it prevents you from letting your standpoint be questioned, so it helps to be aware of when your guard is up. When life threatens you, do you roll into your shell like an armadillo or do you play dead like the opossum and let it wash over you?

While you venture forth, you might initially try to fit into the mould of what you’ve told yourself a graduated person should be doing, but eventually, you’ll question why that was ever the aim to begin with. Offering your existence at the altar of capitalism might not seem like the most fun thing to do, or even the most productive, to you, or the planet. When you do reach that point, I suggest you ask yourself the following questions to help you figure out a more, dare I say, satisfying path: 1.

Do you have a community or cause that you really care about beyond its immediate connection to you? 2. Are there any areas of interest or expertise that you are/have been loyal to?

Darshil Shastri was a B.Tech. student in the Electronics and Communication Engineering Department of SVNIT and graduated in the Batch of 2017. During his college days, Darshil was actively involved in Renesa, Literary Affairs Committee (LAC), and Suches. In his final year, he was the Convener of Sparsh and also the Chief Editor of Renesa. Recognizing the need to expand operations, Darshil started the digital arm of Renesa, named “E-Renesa”. After graduating from college, Darshil worked for ZS, then upGrad, and is now currently a Category Operations Manager in the Lifestyle vertical of Tata CliQ.

It is said that “May you live in interesting times” is a curse in China. Feels apt for this moment in time, doesn’t it? This was probably not how most of you envisaged your college life ending or spending the final year of college. There would have been dreamy plans of nights spent on the terrace of Swami Bhavan, of trips to Goa and Kasol, of confessions to be made, and of dreams to be achieved. Also, it will be no consolation if I tell you that this is affecting everyone in your batch, across colleges, and even people who have passed out and are busy in their careers. The pandemic has not discriminated against anyone, and if you are sitting in your home without mourning the loss of a beloved family member or friend, you should be counting your blessings. But that’s not what we want, do we? We are young, wild, and free. We don’t think this is the age to count our blessings; this is the time to create history, to make memories, and to leave our mark. If you think that I have answers for you in the remaining message, you are mistaken. I can only offer some solace through words, not solutions. Our generation is probably the first in a while that is dealing with a pandemic. The first paychecks will be spent at home, not in a fancy club, not on a trip with friends. It will take time before you are introduced to offices and the small routines that develop when you live by yourself. If you are heading for higher studies, you might be grumbling about attending more lectures and events on Zoom than in real life. So then, why go through all this? What is the point? Well, the silver lining is that you are just starting out! You haven’t started a career path yet or a plan that cannot be reversed. There is flexibility in you and you haven’t faced enough setbacks in life to let the optimism in you die. You’re still the same people who, as recently as 2 months ago, would clear subjects by studying one night before the exam. There is energy, there is conviction, and most importantly, there are no scars yet. This pandemic has opened our eyes to the kind of future we want to live in. As cynical as it may sound, there are

worse problems heading our way — from climate change and pandemics to the threat of global war. If this last year has taught you anything, it’s how to survive this. Maybe not come out of it like a warrior, with life goals achieved and things figured out, but just getting through. One day at a time, one week at a time. You see, we all like to believe that adults (your parents, your seniors) have things figured out. They seem to have answers to problems, to the confusions that gnaw at you every day. As you would have seen, no one does. And so, you can now unabashedly create your own answers. There will be no shackles placed on you that the pandemic has not already placed. So, you must try and put your own best foot forward in getting out of this. And the best part is, if you succeed, you will have done it your way. If at all there is a meaning you’re trying to find in the events of previous years, let it be that at the end of the day, the bonds that we form in the most adverse times are the ones that last the longest. We all have been amplifying messages and requests of help for loved ones and friends. You may not have spoken in years, but you would’ve forwarded a message for someone in need, you would have prayed for someone, felt sorry for someone’s loss, or relieved and happy at someone’s gain. When the chips were down, there was always a network, a group of people you may not even know existed, to help you bounce back up. And it will be there, always. As Dumbledore rightly said, “Help will always be given at Hogwarts to those who ask for it.” The way ahead is hard, uncharted, and unknown, but you’re not alone in it. This year was supposed to be an inhibitor for all college-related activities. Yet, things at Renesa did not slow down. We wouldn’t have managed to put out 2 magazines, 21 E-Renesa articles, and 4 podcasts without your pushy deadlines, the million WhatsApp groups despite a Discord server, and of course, the unmatchable guidance. We’ve been through a lot in the past four years. We started our journey on the old library stairs and ended at a web browser. We missed dinners at Lukma, trips to JLF, and random chill sessions at the lawns, the things that make our club a family. We couldn’t share the hectic moments, the painstaking procedures to publish and print a magazine, and the long waits for permissions. It feels like we lost a lot on the way, but we’ve also gained a lot. We’ve realized how important this group is and how meaningful its people are for us. We’ve realized that important strong connections were made that day on that staircase, and that’s something none of us can ignore. We might not be able to have that feeling again, but we remember what Renesa stands for and what it means for everyone. As much as we want to hug each other for one last time, we cannot. You’ll have to settle for an online farewell. And, for the last time, we wish you good luck and a goodbye from the bottom of our hearts. You will be missed.
