During the special time when te globe are fighting against COVID-19, you sent me the sympathy letter, which fully embodies the friendship of Groningen with Hunan. On behalf of the CPC Hunan Provincial Committee, the Hunan Provincial People’s Government, and in my own name, I’d like to express my sincere gratitude to you! Since the outbreak of the disease, Hunan has been resolutely implementing the decisions of the Chinese government and has always put the life and health of every person on the first place. We stand united and take decisive measures to contain and mitigate the disease in a coordinated manner. The outbreak is trending in a positive direction and our work is yielding positive results. At present, apart from the control and prevention measures, our economic and social development has also gradually resumes. We have the confidence and capacity to defeat the disease, minimise its impact, stabilize the economy and maintain the social harmony. Humanity shines through the dark cloud of the pandemic. While combating COVID-19 in Hunan, we are willing to provide our utmost assistance for our friendship provinces. I have asked the Foreign Affairs Office to deal with it. I wish you good health and all the best! Hope that the friendship beween Groningen and Hunan can be even closer!

Een brief van verre vrienden

Deze week ontving ik een brief van de gouverneur van de Chinese provincie Hunan. Voordat ik Xu Dazhe, want zo heet hij, omschrijf als ‘collega’, moet ik wijzen op de verschillen. We werken in totaal verschillende systemen. En de schaalverschillen zijn enorm. Hunan is een provincie met meer inwoners dan het Verenigd Koninkrijk.
Toch was Hunan tot voor kort voor Europeanen betrekkelijk onbekend. Dat veranderde toen het ineens wereldnieuws werd als de regio die het eerst werd getroffen door het coronavirus. Op dit moment komen er gunstige berichten uit China, ook uit Hunan, over de daling van de hoeveelheid besmettingen. Ondertussen zijn de berichten dichter bij huis, uit Italië en Spanje, soms hartverscheurend. Ook over de situatie in ons land, te beginnen in Brabant en Limburg, is reden tot zorg.
Kunnen we wat doen? De brief van de gouverneur van Hunan raakt me, omdat een zwaar getroffen provincie in China nu aan ons laat merken dat ze meeleeft met verre vrienden in Nederland. Hij schrijft me dat hij er op vertrouwt dat we de ziekte kunnen verslaan, de impact ervan kunnen beperken, de economie kunnen stabiliseren en ondertussen de ´sociale harmonie´ kunnen bewaren. Het zijn precies de dingen waarover we ons nu in Nederland zorgen maken.

‘Menselijkheid schijnt door de donkere wolk van de pandemie’, staat in de brief. Xu schrijft dat hij ons wil helpen. En hij voegt de daad bij het woord. Ambtelijk is inmiddels aangegeven dat Hunan enkele duizenden mondkapjes wil doneren voor Groningen. En daarnaast willen ze kijken wat ze nog meer voor ons kunnen doen.

We hebben een Nederlands spreekwoord. ‘Beter een goede buur dan een verre vriend’. Dat klopt in deze tijd van sociale distantie. Maar nu de wereld een dorp is, ben ik aangenaam getroffen door de betrokkenheid van deze verre vrienden. ·
