Message from Father Clarke Video and Remarks

David M. Clarke, S.J., has experienced a rich and diverse personal and professional path. He earned a bachelor’s and master’s degree in organic chemistry from Gonzaga University, a doctorate in physical chemistry from Northwestern University, and was employed as a chemist at Inland Empire Refineries, Inc.

Blessing of the Building

Father Clarke discovered the Catholic faith as an undergraduate student at Gonzaga University. His experience at a Jesuit university inspired him to enter the Society of Jesus as a member of the Oregon Province in 1953. He was ordained a priest in 1964 and held academic and administrative positions at many different colleges before coming to Regis in 1972 as the 22nd president.

Ribbon Cutting

During his tenure as president from 1972 to 1992, Father Clarke made a lasting impression on Regis.

He helped the University forge new pathways, discover new opportunities and invest more completely in its future. In the spirit of our Jesuit forefathers, his passion for education has been illustrated time and again by his dedication to this institution. Father Clarke began our adult programs and changed the name of the growing Regis College to Regis University. In addition, when Loretto Heights College (LHC) closed, he integrated LHC faculty and students into the Regis community through the addition of heath care education and other programs.

Reception and tours of the building to take place immediately following the dedication.

Father Clarke’s dedication to Regis University as president and chancellor has enabled Regis to continue making a difference in the lives of students and through them, the world. In October of 2011, Regis University began construction of David M. Clarke, S.J. Hall. This building honors the legacy of a true educational entrepreneur who was instrumental in the founding of the College for Professional Studies.
