RENDCOMB COLLEGE 2025
It gives us great pleasure to introduce a truly remarkable individual, Ms Issy Bailey, who will be our esteemed guest speaker at this year ' s Founder's Day Issy is not only an accomplished athlete but also a proud alumna of Rendcomb College
Born in 1994, Issy spent her formative years in the picturesque surroundings of Somerford Keynes, near Cirencester
Her journey with Rendcomb College began during her time as a pupil here, and it was within these very grounds that she first encountered the sport of shooting. While her initial sporting passion lay in hockey, her participation in lacrosse at school showcased her early athletic inclinations
Life presented Issy with unforeseen challenges in 2013, during her studies at the University of Exeter A serious car accident resulted in significant injuries, requiring extensive medical care and a period of profound recovery Despite facing the life-altering consequences of losing the use of her legs and full use of her left hand, Issy's indomitable spirit shone brightly During her rehabilitation at Stoke Mandeville Hospital, Issy discovered a new avenue for her athletic prowess: the sport of shooting Her natural aptitude and unwavering dedication led her to join the Great Britain squad in 2014, marking the beginning of an extraordinary sporting career
Balancing her athletic pursuits with her academic goals, Issy continued her education at the University of Exeter, graduating with a degree in English Her intellectual curiosity further led her to explore wheelchair rugby and wheelchair basketball, culminating in the achievement of a Masters degree in "Global Literatures and Cultures" from Exeter in 2021
While the 2016 Summer Paralympics in Rio presented an initial hurdle, Issy's exceptional talent was recognised with a wildcard entry Her participation in the Games, alongside fellow pistol shooter Stewart Nangle, saw her achieve a commendable 14th place in the Women's 10 metre air pistol SH1. Following Mr. Nangle's retirement, Issy has proudly stood as the sole British pistol shooter on the national team
Her dedication and skill were further affirmed with her inclusion in the teams for the postponed 2020 Summer Paralympics in Tokyo, a testament to her impressive ninth-place finish at the 2019 World Championships in Sydney
Among a distinguished cohort of British women shooters, including Olympians Kirsty Hegarty and Seonaid McIntosh, and Paralympians Lorraine Lambert and Lesley Stewart, Issy represented her nation with distinction in the 10m air pistol SH1 and mixed 25m pistol SH1 events, achieving a personal best performance.
Issy's remarkable journey, marked by resilience, academic achievement, and sporting excellence, serves as a powerful inspiration to us all As a valued alumna of Rendcomb College, her presence today is a source of immense pride
