House Handbook For all Senior Day and Boarding Pupils

We aim to provide every pupil with the support and encouragement that will enable them to get the best out of their time at Rendcomb.

Welcome!

A very warm welcome to Rendcomb College and we are delighted that you have chosen to become part of our close-knit community. Delivering the outstanding pastoral care that every pupil deserves during their formative years is a collective responsibility shared by all members of the College. We aim to provide every pupil with the support and encouragement that will enable them to get the best out of their time at Rendcomb. At the heart of this care is the house system we operate, which is home away from home for both boarding and day pupils alike.

Unlike many other independent schools we use a horizontal house structure, which sees pupils move houses as they move through the Key Stages of their education. Each House has a dedicated pastoral team that aims to create a strong family atmosphere which can benefit all pupils. Led by the Houseparents, the house staff make every effort to create an inclusive and relaxed atmosphere. All pupils also have a tutor,

with whom they meet daily, who helps co-ordinate their academic and pastoral needs.

Each of the Houses have their own social areas and there is also the chance to socialise in the communal spaces on campus such as Barn (for Year 10 and 11) and The Crypt (our legendary Sixth Form bar). There are also a plethora of boarding activities for pupils to throw themselves into throughout the year.

Within this booklet I hope you find a great deal of the information that will help you settle quickly into school life, but if there is something not answered within this, please do get in touch with your Houseparent or the Admissions team who will be happy to help.

Absence

After School

In the event of absence of Day pupils, parents should contact their relevant academic tutor and copy in their Houseparent before 8am. Email is the quickest way to do this.

The school day finishes at 5pm and Day pupils can stay until 6pm at no extra charge. They will be supervised by a member of staff in Houses and can do their homework until they are collected.

Arrivals and Departures

For day pupils who wish to stay on at school after 6pm, a small charge will be added to the end of term bill to cover the cost of supper. After supper, pupils will return to their House for further supervised homework and evening activities. Parents picking up after 6pm collect children from their House. There will be a ‘latest’ pick up time which will vary from House to House and will be published by the Houseparents.

The Houses are the pupil’s base throughout the day for both Day and Boarding pupils.

Drop-off and pick-up for Day pupils is at their House.

Breaks and lunch times are spent in and around their House unless pupils are taking part in activities such as Orchestra, Choir and sports.

In the event of illness or other issues, ahead of a pupil’s attendance at school, parents are kindly requested to contact their child’s Tutor and copy in the Houseparents before 8am by email or phone.

The school day starts at 8.15am Monday to Friday with Registration (known as Callover) taken by Tutors in their respective Tutor Rooms. Pupils will move from their Tutor session to academic lessons, so should attend Callover with all necessary books and equipment for the lessons before break. Attendance at morning and afternoon Callover is mandatory and late arrival will be registered as such.

The school day finishes at 5pm. If catching the day bus, these leave promptly from Main College at 5.15pm.

Each pupil will receive a detailed, personalised timetable to enable them to navigate through lessons, venues and activities.

Occasional and Flexi Boarding At Rendcomb, we are a family and when a day pupil stays late or overnight, they are staying at their homefrom-home with their friends, caring Houseparents and their excellent pastoral teams.

With classmates, friends and siblings staying too, homework is supervised, the daily commute is reduced and the College facilities are open for organised social events and sports. Within the House, pupils enjoy pizza nights, baking, playing games, watching TV and simply being part of the wider boarding community.

Parents should book at least 1 day in advance and booking will depend on availability of beds.

Flexi Boarding can be booked at the beginning of each term for one, two or three fixed nights per week.

Occasional and Flexi Boarders must adhere to the dormitory and House rules otherwise it may prohibit them from further boarding.

Useful Information about Boarding All bedding is provided but pupils may prefer to bring their own (please bring two sets to enable them to be washed and changed).

Pupils will need to provide nightwear, including a dressing gown, toiletries and footwear. Slippers or crocs are also advisable.

Towels need to be supplied and should also be named clearly. At least two large towels are required.

Boarders will need to bring their own chargers for phones and other gadgets and they will need suitable adaptors if gadgets have non-UK plugs. We do provide some coat hangers but you may also wish to provide your own.

A pair of wellington boots/walking boots would be very useful to have for field trips or for when we go for walks in the local countryside, including the forest/wilderness and down by the river. During the Michaelmas and Lent Terms, it is useful to be prepared and bring some suitable clothing for cold, wet, or snowy weather.

Holidays Please refer to the school’s online calendar for term dates and times. Pre-arranged travel can be made through the school for Boarders. Where possible, pupils should return between 6pm and 9pm on the evening before the new half term/term starts or by 8am on the first day of the new half term/term.

Tea will be provided for those Boarders, who for reasons such as earlier flights, arrive back before 6pm.

Please note that half term in the Summer Term begins after Founder’s Day Speeches. Families are warmly invited to join their children for Founder’s Day celebrations.

Families Please do come and support sports matches, plays, concerts, meetings and Church services. All events are listed in the school’s calendar on the website and we encourage family involvement wherever possible.

Teas after matches (players are expected to attend), drinks before and after concerts are all times when you are most welcome to be with your child and to meet with other parents.

Occasionally, some children may experience homesickness at the start of the Michaelmas Term, especially if they are boarding for the first time. Parents can sometimes also feel separation anxiety; we are used to dealing with both scenarios. We are understanding and will aim to keep children active and busy.

Houseparents will give all families of Boarders a report on progress at the end of the first week.

Parents of Boarders may contact their children at any time, but we would appreciate it if visits were restricted to ‘non-school’ hours. Please contact the Houseparents if you are intending to visit to ensure that your child is there to greet you at their House. If you are telephoning your child, please try to avoid prep time (5.15pm to 6.15pm) and after 9pm.

Each House has a dedicated Skype room and all Boarders are encouraged to keep in touch with their loved ones.

Meals

Health and Medical Arrangements

All meals are compulsory and are taken in the Dining Hall with the rest of the school. There is a choice of a hot meals, including a vegetarian dish as well as a salad bar with lunch.

We have three qualified Nurses, known as Sister, who are responsible for pupils’ health during term-time.

Regular and emergency clinics are held in the Medical Centre in Main College.

In the Sixth Form House (Park House) pupils may opt to take breakfast in House. Pupils can order extra milk and orange juice and the charge is added to the end of term bill.

All Boarders register with a local GP and routine appointments are made by Sister. Boarders should be able to see a GP either in private or accompanied as they wish.

The school provides extra snack provisions for the pupils to prepare food for the House such as toast and cereal.

Medicines are kept in a locked cabinet in the Medical Centre, or in the Houses’ medical cabinets and distributed by a member of staff. All medicines are to be handed to Sister at the start of term or half term.

Parents must inform the school of any changes to a pupil’s medication or if a pupil is subsequently put on medication. Appointments with the doctor, dentist, optician and orthodontist can be arranged but where possible, routine visits should be arranged during the holidays.

Mobile Phones Mobile phones for Day pupils are at parents’ discretion; they can be useful when children are on trips or away at matches, so they can contact you with any changes to timings.

Boarders and Flexi Boarders may leave their mobile phones with Houseparents during the evening for safe-keeping. Access to email is available in all Houses and pupils will have a school email address to use.

Personal Matters Adolescence is an important time for young people to learn about relationships and integration.

The Houseparents’ role is to ensure that these relationships are positive and that any occasional conflicts that might naturally arise are addressed and talked through in an open and trusting way.

In the event of a serious illness or accident, parents will be contacted and a pupil can return home if a prolonged period of absence from school is anticipated.

Sister should be informed of any major medical treatments received by a Boarder during the holidays.

In Times of Trouble Rendcomb is a community as well as a school. We are privileged to be involved with you in the bringing up of your son or daughter. We do this together: parents, House staff, tutors and Prefects. Just as in any family, we are here to celebrate successes and to support in times of need. Please talk to us about any concerns you may have.

We will want to involve you when there are problems or unhappiness. Bullying in any form, physical or emotional, is taken very seriously at Rendcomb College. If it does occur, it is important that pupils feel they can talk:

Money Matters and Valuables Children should not bring large sums of cash to College, however, children may need a little change each day if they want to visit the Rendcomb Stores Post Office which acts as the tuck shop.

Boarders should deposit their pocket money with the Houseparents in the House Bank. There should be enough to allow for spending money on trips (approximately £100 to £150 per term in total). Weekly Boarders should not return to school with any more than £10 to £20 for each week, which should be put straight into the House Bank. The Boarders can ask the House team to open the House Bank at break times, after school and at weekends.

Many pupils like to have a tuck box which they can use to keep their treats locked away. Tool boxes are a good option and any box should have a padlock. In addition to tuck boxes, there are lockers in each House, all of which can be secured with a padlock. Pupils should bring two padlocks to school.

A spare key should be given to the Houseparents – please ensure the key has a named key fob and is in a named envelope. For a combination lock we advise that pupils do not use their own birth date as the code.

Rendcomb Village Post Office acts as the school tuckshop there is a Stationery Shop in Stable Block, open at morning break times Hocshop sells shin guards and grip tape – see the sports department to place an order there is a Second Hand Uniform Shop next to the Medical Centre in Main College - open on Monday afternoons in term time

Change of Address Please let the College know immediately of any change of your address or telephone number, or changes in your family circumstances by contacting: HMPA@ rendcombcollege.org.uk.

Please Name Everything Please attach name tapes to all clothes at the back of blazers, shirts, jumpers and at the back of waistbands on trousers, underwear and on all sports kit. Please sew name tapes vertically up the rib of socks. Remember to label shoes and boots, as well as labelling any new clothes as you acquire them. Either a sewn name tape, a marker pen or biro will do. Schoolblazer (the school’s uniform supplier) offer to sew name tapes as standard.

Boarders can change into home clothes at 5pm and day pupils staying overnight can change at this time also.

For Weekly and Full Boarders, it is a good idea to have one change of smart home clothes as well as very casual clothes and a pair of Wellington boots.

Please make sure musical instruments are labelled and easily identifiable.

Laundry Weekly Boarders’ school clothes and sports kit is washed in House but home clothes should go home to be washed. Full Boarders will have all of their washing done in House.

Day pupils should take their games kit home to be washed at the end of every week at least. Please ensure that games kit is clean for all matches; particularly in the Summer Term with cricket and tennis whites.

Day pupils should come to school with a towel, shower gel and roll on deodorant for showering after games lessons. Only roll-on deodorant is permitted as aerosols can set off the school’s fire alarms.

At the end of the day, pupils should go home in school uniform.

Lost Property All property should be named. The Houses have a thorough check of uniform and kit at least once a term which returns mislaid items to their rightful owners. The Deputy Head (Pastoral) also holds a lost property bin.

Parents should inform the Houseparents as soon as possible if their child’s property is mislaid.

Sport Rugby Mouthguards are essential as are legal studs (kitemarked) – please note that new football boots will need to have their synthetic/ plastic studs replaced. Your son should speak to their coach if they have any questions.

Hockey Mouthguards are essential. Astro boots are preferred to trainers as they have better grip. You will also need a hockey stick.

Cricket College provides helmets and other batting equipment.

Cricket studs are advisable. Boys may wish to have their own box for hygienic reasons.

Tennis College provides tennis rackets but pupils may wish to bring in their own.

Lacrosse Mouthguards and eye protectors are essential. College provides lacrosse sticks but pupils may wish to bring their own.

PE kit and trainers need to be brought in for break times and other activities. Pupils enjoy running around and playing football at break and lunch times.

What is Permitted Each House has specific rules regarding electronic gadgets. Please ensure that any expensive items are insured. PSPs, sound systems, torches, iPods, DVD players, hair dryers and other electrical gadgets are permitted, but abuse of these items may lead to confiscation after lights out or during prep time. For Year 7 to 9 boarders, devices are taken in overnight.

Rice cookers may be stored and used in the designated kitchen areas with permission.

All electrical equipment will be checked for fire regulations.

What is Not Allowed Aerosols and glass bottles are not permitted at College.

Very valuable items such as laptops must be privately insured as they are not covered on the school’s policy.

The Houses all have computers connected to the College network in the Prep Rooms. Pupils are able to print work in House via a printer/photocopier as well as to other printers.

Any domestic appliances such as kettles are not permitted in bedrooms. We supply kettles and toasters in kitchens for communal use.

We do not supply adaptors or chargers so pupils should supply their own, providing that they will pass UK safety checks.

Fire Alarms There will be a fire practice each term for Boarders.

On discovering a fire, pupils should shout ‘FIRE’ and operate a fire alarm if one is nearby, unless a member of staff is located first. Evacuate the building, closing doors, alerting as many residents as possible.

Pupils should leave the building immediately by the quickest escape route and report to the designated assembly area. Pupils should remain silent for a roll call and any further instructions. Pupils cannot re-enter the building until permission has been given.

Student Responsibilities We do expect the students to behave in a mature and dignified manner towards their peers and the staff. There are opportunities for our pupils to take on responsibilities both within the House and the College as a whole. We appoint Heads of House and Heads of Boarding as well as Social Prefects.

The House duties range from collecting ‘rations’ and newspapers to unloading and loading the dishwasher in the kitchen. Pupils can join the House Committees where views and ideas are expressed regarding the social aspects of the House.

The College has a whole school forum for the airing of views from all the year groups and each year group has a boy and girl representative on the School Council which meets twice a term. There is also a Food Committee which meets once a term as well as a Boarders’ Committee. Leadership responsibilities are also nurtured through the captaincy of the sports teams, Prefects and the peer support team.

A mature, responsible approach is expected towards pupils’ own and others’ property. This is shown by: • asking before borrowing something • keeping sports kit locked in your changing room locker - nothing should be left out after a Games or PE lesson • keeping the Prep Room locker neat and organised • Boarders/ Flexi Boarders keeping their dorm/room area and bed tidy – use the hooks and drawers provided.

Weekends

Offsite events

Life does not stop at Rendcomb College at weekends!

Saturday mornings are a time for sports fixtures and for on-site enrichment activities. If day pupils are not involved in a sports fixture, they do not need to be in school, but many choose to join in with the enrichment sessions if they wish. All Boarders will take part in the enrichment sessions which include personal training in the gym, archery, badminton, library study, music practice, play rehearsals, use of the art block, yoga, kayaking, climbing, horse riding and more! The activities vary from term to term and are an enjoyable way to begin the weekend.

Pupils may have the opportunity to be included in an offsite event such as a trip to the theatre, cinema or restaurant, the average cost is usually £10 to £25 and is added to the end of term bill without further consultation. If you are not in agreement with this arrangement, please inform the Houseparents before term starts. Occasionally a more expensive trip (such as a visit to a London theatre) is arranged and in this case parental permission will be requested before the seats are booked.

Weekend social events for Boarders include cultural visits, cinema trips, go-karting, ice skating and shopping trips. On Saturday evenings and Sundays, pupils also like to relaxing and recover from the busy school week.

We believe it is important for our pupils to have some unstructured time, quiet reading, resting or watching TV/a movie.

Boarders can visit friends or family over the weekend.

However, we have a duty of care and therefore cannot allow a Boarder to go to someone’s home unless we have permission from both sets of parents. We would prefer at least two days’ notice via email to prevent confusion at the time of pick-up.

On Exeat weekends, pupils leave school at 5pm on the Friday, and return can be either on Sunday evening between 6pm and 9pm or on Monday morning before registration at 8.15am.

Our Houses

Godman House Godman House is the day and boarding house for 11-14-year-old boys and girls (Years 7, 8 and 9).

At the end of the school day, letting off steam and quality downtime is important. Evening activities include using the games room with pool table and PS4, available to all the boarders, and also the smaller cosier common room for that quieter more homely family feel.

All dorms are situated upstairs, boys on one side of the house and girls the other. The dorms are broken down into two sizes, 3 or 4 beds and each boarder has their own wardrobe and storage space. Each side of the house has its own bathrooms with showers.

In 2019, Godman House underwent an extensive refurbishment and extension. From September 2019, it will be a co-educational house and will boast fantastic new facilities, common rooms, dormitories and more, led by a wonderful pastoral team.

Miss Bond is the Chemistry Lab Technician within the Science Department in Stable Block and is never too far away from the House. She encourages all pupils to make themselves at home; nowhere replaces home, but we want Godman House to be a ‘home away from home’ for each and every pupil.

The house is vibrant and happy and pupils thrive in the lively, close knit community whilst being nurtured by the Houseparent and her pastoral team.

Making new friends and living with other pupils can be great fun! All pupils have plenty of opportunity to take part in new activities or take on a new challenge.

Boarding at Godman House offers all pupils a wealth of opportunities, whether it is developing independence, making long lasting friendships or simply gaining confidence. Arrive as an individual but leave as part of our Godman family.

If you are ever in doubt, always speak to someone, especially if you are new to the College or boarding.

Don’t be shy! If you are unsure or if something isn’t right, please speak to one of the pastoral team. It won’t be something we haven’t heard before and no question is too silly!

The House includes a large common room with a TV, Xbox and football table to encourage the pupils across the year groups to socialise throughout the day. The common room also has a small kitchenette area where pupils can have a quick drink and snack during break times.

Miss Bond has a great pastoral team with her in Godman House.

Mr Border, Assistant Houseparent (non-resident), is a Sport Coach in the College and he coaches a variety of sports for both the girls and boys. His passion for coaching comes from his father who coached him for a long period of time during his youth. His favourite sport personality is Anthony Joshua, a pure athlete with a desire to be a humble winner.

Panda, Matron, is very family oriented with two children of her own. If she’s not constantly running around after them, she loves to socialise with friends, listen to chart music and likes to relax by taking her dog, Millie, for long walks. Panda likes to keep herself fit by going to the gym and playing badminton.

Godman House

Stable House Stable House is the day and boarding house for 14-16-year-old girls (Years 10 and 11).

Houseparents Mr George Toms and Mrs Jessamy Toms Assistant Houseparent Miss Aimee Ratapana The friendly and supportive atmosphere for the girls encourages them to seize every opportunity that comes their way. Boarders have their own bedroom and each floor has a kitchen and bathroom. The older girls have their own lounge and all have access to a laundry room.

The Common Room has a TV, Nintendo Wii and table tennis table and is designed to encourage the girls to socialise. There is also a Cinema Lounge with a wide choice of DVDs, Amazon Prime and Netflix in addition to an Xbox. Girls have access to a careers room, library and hobbies room. Evening and weekend activities include dance, yoga, Pilates, beauty treatments such as facials, sports hall challenges, cookery, trips to the cinema to watch the latest release and shopping.

Mr Toms (MA, BA Hons, PGCE) is Head of Spanish and Mrs Toms (MA, BA Hons, PGCE) is a member of the English department. They have both been teaching at Rendcomb since 2017 and having previously taught in other schools, are well placed to guide the girls through their GCSEs, as well as preparing them for the demands of Sixth Form. Outside the classroom they enjoy going to the theatre and cinema when they can, as well as spending time outdoors and keeping active.

Mr and Mrs Toms, drawing from their previous experience as Assistant Houseparents for Park House

(our Sixth Form boarding house), aim to establish and maintain an environment where girls feel secure, are encouraged to talk and are listened to.

Mr and Mrs Toms value respect, encouraging girls to be compassionate, considerate, intellectually curious and prepared for academic challenges. Girls are supported in becoming self-motivated, self-disciplined and independent, whilst being able to take initiative and have fun!

Wi-Fi is available throughout Stable House and there is a designated Skype computer for girls to keep in touch with family and friends. There is also access to Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn.

Stable House

Lawn House Lawn House is the day and boarding house for 14-16-year-old boys (Years 10 and 11).

Houseparents Mr Paul Bevans and Mrs Mandy Bevans Assistant Houseparent Mr Ed Thomason Each boy is accommodated in a sizeable, individual bedroom, with a personal study space.

There are three kitchens and two living areas with a pool table, 42” plasma screen with Sky TV, an Xbox and Nintendo Wii. Daily newspapers are also available enabling the boys to keep up to date with current affairs.

Evenings in Lawn House offer a variety of activities ranging from Dodge ball in the sports hall, to themed evenings in the Barn social centre, which houses a jukebox and comfortable leather sofas, as well as offering soft drinks and snacks. It is an ideal environment for the girls and boys to meet up during the evenings and this is supervised by the evening tutor teams.

A large media room is open throughout the day and evening for boys to study in a quiet environment. Wi-Fi is available throughout the house with a designated Skype booth enabling boys to keep in touch with family and friends. Lawn House offers an exciting and stimulating environment which pushes and stretches the boys whilst ensuring that they have all the support and advice they need to develop to their full potential.

Lawn House has a shower room and bathroom on every floor. Day boys have lockers allocated to them for their files and for sports equipment. Mr and Mrs Bevans,

along with the Assistant Houseparent, Mr Thomason, make every effort to create a home-from home experience for the boys.

Mr Bevans is Head of Physics and Mrs Bevans is a SEN teacher. They have three daughters, two cats and a very lively black Lab/Retriever called Bronwen. Mr Thomason is a Games Coach and Tutor and is also an Old Rendcombian.

Education is more than just the academic side and Mr and Mrs Bevans strive to produce well-rounded, confident and responsible young men. As Houseparents, they expect every one of the boys to demonstrate tolerance and thoughtfulness towards each other and recognise that it is not always easy living as part of an extended family. Etiquette, good manners and pride in oneself are also important qualities that they endeavour to instil in our young men. Mr and Mrs Bevans also pride themselves on the relationships they form with families and they offer an open door policy for both pupils and parents. They want you to feel able to speak with them at any time about any concerns, however small.

Lawn House

Park House Park House is the day and boarding house for Sixth Form boys and girls (Years 12 and 13).

Houseparents Mr Marc Silverthorn and Mrs Hannah Silverthorn Assistant Houseparents Mr Ryan Castle Mr and Mrs Silverthorn lead Park house with their young family Amarah and Seren, both of whom attend Rendcomb College Junior School. Mr Silverthorn is Head of Design & Technology and has first-hand experience of boarding school life; he first identified that he wanted to be “an Inventor” when he himself went to boarding school from the age of 8 in Hereford. Aside from teaching, he is an enthusiast of outdoor activities on both land and sea. Mrs Silverthorn is an Assistant Head Teacher and brings her wealth of experience of working with students to the House. Outside the classroom, she enjoys music, particularly choral singing in Church and amateur dramatics.

Mr and Mrs Silverthorn and their team instil a warm environment that gives students that important emotional detachment from the school day but also encourages them to make the most of being in a boarding community by engaging in the communal activities and adventures.

Entry into the Sixth Form represents an important and challenging moment in a student’s education. Central to this experience at Rendcomb is our Sixth Form Boarding House, Park. Park House is a co-educational, purpose built and self-contained block. When not in lessons or tutorial groups, students spend time studying or relaxing in Park House.

Sixth Formers enjoy a full programme of Sport, Art, Music and Drama. Many also take up the Duke of Edinburgh’s Gold Award challenge. They all enjoy the experience of self-catering and managing their own budgets when in the on-site, independent living cottage, Garden House, which provides excellent preparation for university and life after school.

Starting a new school or moving to a new house is always an exciting time and the Houseparents are the first point of contact for Boarders and Day students.

Park House

Trips to Cirencester and Cheltenham Sixth Form students may request to be allowed to visit Cirencester or Cheltenham after Games on Saturday and Wednesday afternoons until dinner time either with parents of other students or by taxi or bus. Acting in loco parentis, we usually give permission for such trips, however, if you are not in agreement with their arrangement please let the Houseparents know before term starts. Upper Sixth students may go out on either Wednesdays or Saturdays or both. Lower Sixth students may only go out on Saturdays. These arrangements should never interfere with Games commitments.

Driving Students may arrange driving lessons in consultation with the House staff. If you wish the cost of these lessons to be added to the school bill, please ensure that the necessary amount is added to the fee cheque before term starts.

Cars and motorbikes Students who have passed their driving test may bring a car/motorbike to school and may use it only for their usual journey to and from school. Before the vehicle is brought to school, parents need to write to the Deputy Head (Pastoral) to ask for his permission for the student to use the vehicle. The pupil will need to sign a car contract and register it with Reception.

Students may not drive other students in their vehicle without specific permission given to the House staff, in advance, from the parents or Guardians of all parties involved.
