Artful Living

Megan and Michael Manning connect artists and buyers through their online gallery and curating service Cucuron.

M

egan Manning studied dance and business at Marymount Manhattan College in New York, New York, embracing the duality of her love for both art and commerce. Her husband, Michael Manning, has a background in operations and marketing from a career in advertising.

Together, the New Orleans couple created Cucuron (cucuronshop.com), an online platform that connects art lovers with artists, making the process easier for both parties. The company is named for a market in a small village in Provence, where Megan and Michael were inspired to create Cucuron. “I really understand the artist’s journey,” says Megan, who spent years living the artist’s life as a freelance choreographer and nanny. “And the vulnerability of making something, putting it in the public eye, and trusting someone else to represent you.” A Hammond native, Megan worked as an investment banker after an injury, then as a Pilates instructor, eventually landing at her family’s Hammond-based business, Ross and Walls Paper Products. “I went from the very entry-level sales job to CEO and learned a tremendous amount,” says Megan. “I got to work with great people that taught me along the way. So, after that,

it was like, what’s next, right?” Megan prepared the company for sale and took some time off for maternity leave. “While I was integrating our family company into the parent company, I worked remotely in France for the summer,” says Megan. “That area of France, Provence, is known for the markets, so we would take the kids and explore.” The idea for Cucuron struck when, after spying a collection of beautiful, glazed ceramics, Megan had a realization. “In my mind, I was like ‘Why would I even shop here?’” she says. “I’m gonna be here for the next couple of weeks, transporting two kids in car seats, there’s no way I’m gonna buy a piece of ceramic and cart it all over Europe. I looked at my husband and said, ‘Wouldn’t it be interesting if we could curate the best of local art and offer it to be shipped?’” They went for it and decided to focus on New Orleans and the South, harnessing the underrepresented talent in the region. “It’s a slightly crazy journey,” says Megan. “And being able to surround myself with people who are passionate about what they do has been a huge blessing.”

D

edicated to making the sport of sailing accessible to all New Orleanians, the Community Sailing New Orleans team supports a number of programs to help people of all ages and abilities get out on the water. The team focuses primarily on using sailing as an educational platform. They offer general learn-to-sail courses for adults, a female-focused sailing course (Women in the Wind), and programs designed specifically for veterans. Private sailing lessons are available as well.

Their fleet includes everything from two-person dinghies to Capri 26s and Freedom Independence 20s. They are all well-suited as vessels for those who are learning to sail, and the Freedom Independence 20s also offer accessible equipment for people with disabilities. In fact, these keelboats are designed for accessibility, purpose-built for wheelchair users and other adaptive needs.

The Community Sailing New Orleans’ Director of Development and Communications, Lynn Spearman, spoke with Avenue about the team’s innovative approach to increase sailing’s accessibility. Given her background in the communication and development department at Audubon Schools, Spearman was a natural choice for the role.

Sailing Youth Programs

Now in their fifth year of operations, the Community Sailing New Orleans team is responding to the great demand for their programs. In fact, they are already looking to expand more, with plans to extend the STEM program through second grade. In addition, they want to expand the Captain program to vulnerable populations and people looking for new careers, because the certifications can open a lot of doors.

Spearman invites anyone interested to check out the team and their many programs. “We are everyone’s connection to the water, and we want people to experience that,” said Spearman. Because the programs are primarily free, there is a low barrier to entry. – By Lindsay Mack

Introducing young people to the sport of sailing is one of the organization’s biggest goals, and they are looking to expand their two youth programs. First, the STEM Design + Build + Sail program is free for middle-schoolers, and it aligns with state educational standards. Students study concepts relating to geometry, buoyancy, and the wind all while learning to sail throughout the semester. The program takes real-life sailing skills and ties them back to classroom concepts. They even build model boats to race on the lake, further reinforcing these skills.

Meanwhile, the Crew to Captain Maritime Career Development Program for high schoolers teaches students how to sail on a variety of vessels. They earn multiple certifications over three years, which allows them to pursue a

In addition, Community Sailing New Orleans’ adaptive programs provide opportunities for people with physical or mental impairments to enjoy sailing as well. Spearman noted that this is a well-loved, popular program, and the team is consistently overwhelmed with the demand for these opportunities. Both individuals and groups are welcome to join in for a safe, joyful introduction to the sport of sailing.

Successes

For a program that began serving the community during the pandemic, Community Sailing New Orleans has found tremendous success within five years. They have not only served about 1,200 individuals, but they have also built a state-of-the-art sailing center that is now their home.

The team just completed work on the new building and acquired many new boats within the same year, so they are excited to share all these resources with the community.

Future Plans

Get Involved Donations are crucial to keeping the organization’s many programs afloat. Everyone is welcome to visit the facility – even those who do not care to get in the water. Plus, the facility itself can be rented out for birthday parties and more events.

The team also needs more people who are interested in helping them with instruction, as this is their biggest capacity issue.

Lastly, anyone who has enjoyed watching the boats on Lake Pontchartrain and considered giving sailing a try is more than welcome to contact the team and start learning to sail.

here are those enviable homes that pop up every holiday season, so impeccably decorated that they practically radiate joy. Some are so inviting they have you questioning your own efforts and not so subtly nudge you to dream bigger. So, why not let these homes inspire your potential to create a swoon worthy tableau of your own and allow the creative sugar plum fairies to dance in your head? Either way, ‘tis the season to go for it! The only problem is that achieving this next level kind of magic doesn’t just happen by chance. The results are usually the product of serious discipline and thoughtful, creative planning. And well, most folks are already overwhelmed with a myriad of other holiday responsibilities. Extra logistics seem daunting when you’re just trying to stay afloat.

Still, you don’t have to sacrifice ambition at the altar of convenience. Forget about unboxing your dusty old faux garland, smushed pre-tied bows and invite something more intentional, unique into your life.

But you’re probably going to need help.

Many people still believe that holiday decorating rests entirely on their own shoulders. While that’s perfectly understandable, the truth is that big aspirations often benefit from professional help. And in today’s world, connecting with an expert is easy and an ideal solution for those short on time but not ambition. Enlisting a local florist or event designer can be a useful tool for bringing your holiday vision to life. Kim Starr Wise, a third-generation floral designer based in New Orleans, has been transforming spaces from weddings to dinner parties for over a decade. Known for her keen eye for beauty and attention to detail, Wise brings a unique perspective to every project. Whether or not you decide to hire an expert, you’d be wise to take advantage of her (free!) expert advice. Wise agreed to share opinions, tips and tricks to help bring your holiday dreams to life.

Before anything else, you’ll need to get your creative vision set. This may come easy for some, but in a world of Pinterest and Instagram, the choices can become overwhelming. There are so many varying themes and color trends that paring it down to one is no easy feat. Wise suggests forgoing trends and focusing on a color story. She offered, “You don’t really need a theme, but a color scheme, absolutely!” Adding, “One client of mine is refining their look from the last few years and committed to a distinctly northern winter aesthetic: color coordinating dense evergreens, brown pinecones, red velvet ribbons, and frosted berries.

Another popular, eye-catching look is grouping autumn inspired colors together. Fanning out ornaments in brown, orange and cream beautifully complements a deep green holiday tree. Plus, the nod towards traditional Thanksgiving colors allows for an early tree set up. Bonus! Wise also recommends using a monochromatic look. She says, “I love using unexpected holiday colors like black or pink in this way.” For example, grouping ornaments and ribbons together in varying shades of pink, think rose, mauve, baby pink, will create drama without feeling chaotic.

The scope of work you’re willing to take on is also an important consideration. This can be swayed by many factors, like your potential hosting responsibilities, and of course, the budget.

You’ll need to clarify which areas of your home you’re planning to include and how much space you’re working with. For those feeling overzealous, it’s beneficial to know how far you need to take it to create the maximum impact you’re craving. For example, is one room enough to create a show stopping look? Wise weighs in, “Not in my opinion, but I think it depends on the home’s layout and the other decor in the house.” Conversely, she also believes that it’s not necessarily the size of the project that creates the magic. Wise insists that for her, no undertaking is too large or too small to be worthwhile. She’s assisted with large scale projects like a French quarter hotel featuring over 300 floating ornaments; each attached to the ceiling with monofilament, surrounded by faux trees. And on the opposite end of the scale, she’s decorated a single-family tree for a client, adorned with butterflies, family heirloom ornaments and colorful ribbons that carried over to the fireplace mantel.

She says, “The result was detail-oriented, artistic and eclectic.”

Wise also offers practical advice for those taking the DIY route. She emphasizes that choosing the right tools can make all the difference. “I cannot create without ribbon scissors, wire cutters, and leather gloves to protect my hands! from your hands. Swimming in this same unsexy, yet immensely useful pond of practices is opting for the correct cords, fasteners, and adhesives. This can sometimes feel like a hassle, as there are so many options, but choosing wisely is paramount to any great decoration. While it will vary from project to project, a few special tools remain popular with those in the know. When decorating outdoors, many experts rely on heavy-duty extension cords rated for extreme weather, along with zip ties to keep everything secure.

These staple products offer a sense of security. In our unpredictable climate, you want to avoid blowing fuses in the rain or fixed decorations flailing in the wind.

Depending on your project, technology can also be your best friend. For instance, Wemo offers a smart outlet that lets you control your home’s lighting from your phone, ideal for folks tired of crawling behind their tree to turn the lights on and off. Also, a simple lighted foot switch comes in very handy for anyone with mobility issues. The TreE-Z Wrap is another handy product that helps fasten lights around tree trunks, branches, or columns. Heaven help you if your lights don’t remain in even rows after you’ve spent hours securing them. Speaking of securing, the use of a utility hook with an extension pole is a fantastic way to reach elevated spots that might otherwise be too dangerous. Often both DIYers and those who seek professional help want to work with what they already have on hand. This is when it’s important to decide what stays and what goes (at least for this year). If the overarching goal is to be as eye pleasing as possible, then you will have to pick favorites. New Orleans natives (in particular) tend to favor family heirlooms, for better or worse, and feel the need to incorporate them throughout their home every season. As meaningful as these pieces are, they can dominate a look and curtail your desired aesthetic. If you’re trying to make a novel statement this year, you might need to rethink this just temporarily. Wise mentions, “I think trying to reuse decorations that are past their prime or that don’t complement the overall look is a mistake.” Instead, she suggests revitalizing old pieces with just a few modern tweaks. She says, “Changing out ribbon colors and swapping around ornaments can bring just the change you need.” You can also add something fresh, organic to your design to give it more depth. he New Orleans Botanical Garden and the Pavilion of Two Sister became blooming tableaux when the City Park Conservancy and the New Orleans Town Gardeners hosted the Heart of the Park Hat Luncheon presented

by First Horizon Bank.

Women and men chicly dressed for a garden party — “tropical chic” was the theme — with hats, of course, taking centerstage.

The event on April 30 featured designer, author and entrepreneur India Hicks as guest speaker, who shared stories and insights from her book “Lady Pamela.”

The seated lunch was provided by Chez Nous and City Park Catering.

This year’s live auction was reimagined to feature eight “Pop Up Parties,” experiences hosted by NOTG club members.

“There really is no better, or more important, afternoon in the park than the Hat Luncheon,” said CPC President and CEO Rebecca Dietz. “The funds raised at this spectacular daytime event help preserve, and sustain, our majestic urban forest and ensure important community programs remain intact — and it’s a good time!”

The annual celebratory event is an important fundraiser for both CPC and NOTG, which is a member of the Garden Club of America.

t. Elizabeth’s Guild marked its 53rd Annual Volunteer Activists Awards Luncheon by honoring those who give back to the New Orleans area.

Held May 2 in the Grand Ballroom of the Hilton New Orleans Riverside Hotel, the event kicked off with a lively patron party, followed by a fashion show presented by Dillard’s, live entertainment, a silent auction and two raffles — one for a Southwest Airlines ticket and another for a coveted “Spirits Wagon” stocked with fine wines, liquors and festive accessories.

The highlight of the afternoon was the announcement of the extraordinary community activists: Jose Juan Bautista, Ph.D.; Jill and Scott Cabes; Colleen Keller Cloninger; Ronald H. Dawson Jr.; Robin Ockman Dykes; John E. Hevron, M.D.; Sueann Hanemann North; Judy Vicknair Quinilty; Sheila Meyers Schulz and Jessica Gordon Waguespack. The distinguished Hall of Fame honoree, recognized 25 years after her initial St. Elizabeth’s activist award, was Maria E. Winn.

Following a four-year renovation led by TrapolinPeer Architects and Broadmoor Construction, the historic Richardson Memorial Hall on Tulane’s Uptown campus was ready for architecture students and faculty — and on this night, a party debut. The building, home to the School of Architecture, stands as a symbol of the school’s evolution — from its first courses in 1894 under the Professor William Woodward to its modern programs in Architecture, Historic Preservation, Design, Real Estate Development and Landscape Architecture + Engineering.

The dedication on April 24 drew a distinguished crowd, including Tulane President Michael Fitts, Tulane Architecture Dean Iñaki Alday, donors, faculty, alumni and students.

The celebration continued with the Dean’s Advisory Council Awards Gala, at which architectural luminaries Errol Barron and Robert Ivy, along with civic leaders New Orleans Saints and Pelicans owner Gayle Benson and former New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu, were honored for their contributions to design and community.

Blue, white and green balloons — echoing Newcomb-Tulane College colors — adorned the building’s interior where guests also enjoyed dinner from Joel Catering and danced in the Favrot Lobby to Grammy-nominated The Rumble.

ridge House/Grace House’s 30th annual Women of Substance Luncheon presented by the Oscar J. Tolmas Charitable Trust commemorated its legacies of past and present.

Held May 16 at Audubon Tea Room, the event honored remarkable women and men making a difference in the community: Claudia Powell, Melissa Sawyer and Michelle Gaiennie Hamrick were recognized as Women of Substance, while Candice Harper was named Alumna of the Year. The Leigh Whitman Director Volunteer of the Year Award went to Sharonda Williams, and John Eastman received the Richard “Buzzy” Gaiennie Award.

In addition to the awards ceremony, guests enjoyed a 50/50 raffle, browsed over 70 silent auction items, and could purchase Aspirational Art cards featuring art by Ursuline Academy students.

The live auction, emceed by Mark Romig, featured five packages with the top item as a two-night stay at Hotel Richemont in Charleston, with dinner for two at Two Bit Club and weekend brunch at Indaco.

“The 2025 Women of Substance luncheon was the best year we’ve ever had, raising over $150,000 for Bridge House/Grace House,” said Director of Development Stephanie Clary, CFRE. “Grace House is the only treatment facility in the region that offers longterm residential treatment specifically for women with substance use disorders.

“Our fundraising initiatives — such as the Women of Substance Luncheon — enable us to offer the opportunity for learning to live sober one day at a time over an expanded period of time, a program offered by no other organization.”

Interesting Fact: The 2025 luncheon and Volunteer of the Year Award celebrated the legacy of Leigh Whitman Director, a Bridge House/Grace House volunteer and supporter, in whose honor the award was renamed. Known for living each day with purpose, Leigh’s dedication extended from her personal life to her impactful work with the Whitman Family Foundation.

uests donned cowboy boots and hats for WYES’ largest fundraiser of the year, WYES Goes Country & Western presented by the Oscar J. Tolmas Charitable Trust. The event was May 8 at the WYES studios, bringing together supporters for a night of fun, food and fund-raising.

The patron party kicked off the festivities, followed by the gala featuring cuisine from The Windsor Court. Guests two-stepped the night away to live music from Parish County Line. Auction Committee Chair Eric Hoffman even took the mic to entertain the crowd.

The silent auction offered more than 100 coveted items, including a Viking eight-day European river cruise for two, Emeril’s Carnivale du Vin weekend for six and a private dinner at home for eight with wine pairings from Galatoire’s.

Guests also left with a keepsake: a one-of-a-kind, chain-stitched bandana made on-site as a stylish reminder of the evening.

rom the zebra-adorned invitation to the fashionable crowd, the 47th annual Hancock Whitney Zoo-to-Do was a start-to-finish success.

Held May 2 at the Audubon Zoo, the event is eagerly anticipated by New Orleanians and fans from afar with the zoo grounds becoming a set for fun, but with a purpose. Each year’s Zoo-to-Do raises funds for a specific portion of the zoo, and this year, it was the construction on the new barn for zebras, which are scheduled to return to the zoo in 2026.

As always, options abounded for cocktails and cuisine from local restaurants. The extensive silent auction offered something for everyone, and many tried their luck at the Lee Michaels Fine Jewelry Pick-A-Present and Lexus luxury car raffle. The Life Atlantic as well as other popular bands, kept people entertained, with quite a few on the dance floor.

The fund-raising tally? $1.3 million dollars was raised.

Contributing to that was the Zoo-to-Do for Kids presented by Manning Family Children’s, held April 25 with Lauren Flower as event chair.

Since their inception, Zoo-to-Do events have raised more than $40 million dollars benefiting Audubon Zoo and its conservation work.

ecently opened after a long wait, The Kingsway is the hottest ticket in town. The kitchen is headed by Ashwin Vilkhu, the son of the father-son co-Executive Chef team that has garnered several nods from The James Beard Foundation for their exceptional fare at Saffron. The younger Vilkhu developed the prix fixe, Pan Asian tasting-style menu as an homage to the multicultural cuisine he grew up eating at home, due largely to his father’s (Arvinder Vilkhu) having worked with and learned from some of the world’s great culinary talents throughout the course of his international career in the hospitality business.

The chef shared his recipe for Tuna Solera, a complex, though elegant dish that would be an impressive addition to a celebratory holiday or New Year’s Eve menu.

“This sauce celebrates depth through patience: each element builds on the next,” Ashwin Vilkhu said. “The caramelized onions and soy form the backbone, citrus brings lift, and the star anise with green onion lends quiet perfume. Inspired by the solera traditions of Champagne and sherry—where each vintage builds upon a “library” of the past—this sauce gets better every time you make it, and the recipe makes more than you’ll need. Save a spoonful from each batch to fold into the next, and you’ll create a living archive of flavor that matures beautifully over time. Use it with your favorite raw seafood of the best quality; Porgy’s is the best place to find that locally.”

1 tablespoon mirin 1 1/2 pounds yellowfin tuna loin, chilled until firm but not frozen Ice water, for the garnish 1. Heat the oil in a small saucepan over medium heat. Add the diced onion and the star anise, cooking slowly and stirring often until the onions turn deep golden and caramelized, about 10-12 minutes.

2. Add the garlic and ginger paste, stirring for 30 seconds until fragrant. Sprinkle in the black pepper and red chili flakes, toasting briefly to bloom their aroma. Pour in the soy sauce, scraping up any browned bits from the pan. Add the white part of the green onion (reserve the greens for garnish), brown sugar, and the zest and juice of the lemon and lime.

Lower the heat and simmer for 5 to 7 minutes, until the sauce has slightly thickened and is harmoniously balanced. The green onion should soften and release its sweetness.

3. Remove and discard the star anise and green onion, then stir in the sesame oil. Strain for a smooth, glossy finish, or leave the onions in for rustic texture.

Cool the sauce completely before transferring to a jar. Store in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks—or reserve a spoonful to fold into the next batch, continuing your own “library” of flavor.

What to Drink with Tuna Solero?

Colin Williams, Director of Beverage and Service for both Saffron and The Kingsway, recommends the Daydreamer cocktail. “It’s our version of a lychee martini that we clarify using milk, which gives it a great texture while still being very light and refreshing. The spice of the tuna elevates the fruity tones of the cocktail and the lemongrass notes while keeping your palate refreshed for the upcoming courses.”

4. When you’re ready to serve, season the freshly cooked rice with the vinegar and mirin, using a flat paddle or spoon to gently fold them into the rice.

The rice should take on a soft gloss and a faint, natural perfume. Allow to cool to room temperature.

5. Cut the scallion greens into 3-inch sections, then slice each lengthwise into fine threads. Soak them in ice water for 5 to 10 minutes, until they curl and crisp, then drain and dry gently on a towel.

6. With a long, sharp knife, slice the chilled tuna loin across the grain at a 45-degree angle, using smooth, single strokes, into slices about 1/4-inch thick. Avoid sawing—let the blade glide.

7. Gently fan out the sliced tuna on a plate. Spoon the solera sauce over it and garnish with the scallion curls. Serve immediately, with the rice and nori on the side for building hand rolls.

adeline Grace Devine matched with Michael John Mooney on Hinge. Though they chatted briefly, the conversation fizzled—until a week later, when Michael still hadn’t found anyone to take his extra ticket to the Pelicans Playoff Play-In game. On a whim, he messaged Maddy again. She didn’t see it until an hour before tipoff but decided to go. There was one problem: her name had disappeared from her profile, and Michael didn’t know it. When they met at the Smoothie King Center, he asked her name—she thought he was joking! He wasn’t, but they laughed so much that night anyway that Maddy’s cheeks hurt, and Michael walked her home.

A year and a half later, a friend offered Maddy free tickets to another Pelicans game for the NBA Cup. She happily accepted, and her excitement grew when Michael’s friend—a Pelicans beat reporter—said he could get them onto the court. What she didn’t know was that Michael had planned it all. Right where they’d had their first date, he got down on one knee and proposed. Completely surprised, Maddy said yes. Still in shock, they walked home—only to find friends waiting at Courtyard Brewing to celebrate along the route.

The couple got engaged just before Thanksgiving 2024 and quickly began looking for spring wedding venues.

Hotel Peter and Paul, their top choice, had one opening—the first Saturday of Jazz Fest. It was fate. For Maddy, the venue held special meaning: she had fond memories of dining there with her late father. On April 26, 2025, she walked down the aisle with her bouquet wrapped in the belt from her mother’s wedding dress and secured with a pin featuring her father’s picture. Because no one could replace

karaoke afterparty carried on into the early morning.

After the festivities, Maddy and Michael escaped for a peaceful honeymoon hiking in Zion National Park. They live in the Lower Garden District, where Michael works as a Trauma ICU nurse at University Medical Center and Maddy is the SVP of Strategic Finance for a healthtech company. – By Megan Holt
