About Us Since 1984, the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Louisiana has been committed to creating and facilitating a business climate within the Hispanic community to promote economic development and progression in Louisiana. Included within its focus is a dedication to the expansion of trade relations between the State of Louisiana and Latin America. The HCCL is a non-profit organization created as the result of a merger in 1999 of two chambers: The Louisiana Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (incorporated in 1984) and The Gulf Coast International Chamber of Commerce (incorporated in 1990). Just as HCCL works to build capacity in the Hispanic business community, so too does it work with traditional American businesses to help them approach this fastest growing minority population in the United States. We connect communities! HCCL Members gain access to a broad network of businesses, non-profits and government entities as well as a selection of seminars, training courses and networking events dedicated to making your business grow.

Letter from the President Dear friends, We are proud to launch our first membership directory. This project has been a goal for several years, and we are excited to offer this resource to you. Our annual publication is designed to contain relevant information to serve as a useful reference tool to connect businesses in the community. We had the pleasure of assembling the contents for this first issue with the professional guidance of Renaissance Publishing. The fuel of our organization is our membership. We are committed to continue our growth throughout the State of Louisiana by presenting impactful programs, resources, and connections to foster economic development. This issue summarizes the focus of our organization and achievements in the past year. We recount the various projects, activities and collaborations which have been instrumental in providing our membership with value. I look back at the last five years of HCCL with satisfaction, but realize our work is far from done. Join HCCL in our vision to empower Hispanic businesses and build meaningful relationships throughout the community. Letter from the Board Chairwoman Dear members, Louisiana is a beautiful melting pot of culture and expression with opportunities for the many. At the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Louisiana (HCCL), we seek to facilitate these opportunities for Hispanic professionals and Hispanicowned businesses, large and small. I am honored to serve you and our Hispanic community, at large, as Chair of the HCCL’s Board of Directors. In partnership with the HCCL Foundation, and thanks to your generous support, we provide labor and workforce training programs, facilitate public and private partnerships, and develop funding and educational prospects for Louisiana’s Hispanic business community. The Chamber also provides a networking platform for Hispanic professionals and businesses to interact with each other and the Louisiana business community. My main goal as Chair is to add practical value to our members’ business pursuits. Midway through my first year, I am excited to oversee the execution of many of the Board’s projects including a more marked presence of our Hispanic Young Professionals Committee (HYPLA), expanded strategic partnerships throughout our State and, in particular, this Directory. One of our objectives is to promote an interactive environment in which our members thrive; the first step in doing so is interconnectivity. This Directory is a powerful tool in our members’ arsenal of advancement both for themselves and all Hispanicowned businesses in our community. I strongly encourage each of you to use it! Going forward, your Chamber will also streamline its networking, workshops, and training efforts. Your feedback will shape these efforts. We will create opportunities for direct communication between individual and corporate members as well as between the Chamber’s leadership and membership. We will expand opportunities for our individual professional and small business members while embracing our millennial membership base. And, cognizant of these trying times for our community, I will also oversee the creation of a Political Action Committee (PAC) through which the Chamber will voice the concerns of its membership on impactful legislative and voter education initiatives. Remember your input, interest and participation are crucial to the Chamber’s ability to serve you. I urge you to contact me, our President, Mayra Pineda, and our Board of Directors to make your concerns, feedback, and interests known. Join a Committee, participate in as many events as you can, establish relationships, visit the Chamber, and ultimately you will grow your business. We welcome your contributions with open arms! In closing, I’d like to thank HCCL President, Mayra Pineda, for her tireless representation of the Chamber and our community. I also thank my fellow Officers and Directors, our strategic partners in the region, and the HCCL Foundation and HYPLA Committee, for their trust, dedication, and leadership. Chamber of Excellence HCCL’s relationship with the United States Hispanic Chamber leads to national recognition By Sam Lucio
E
very year, the United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce awards local chambers its biggest annual distinction: Chamber of the Year. In 2017, the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Louisiana (HCCL) was recognized for its outstanding work in the community and gained this prestigious recognition by the USHCC. Mayra Pineda, president and CEO of the HCCL, accepted the award on behalf of the HCCL at the 2017 USHCC’s National convention in Dallas, Texas. This recognition was bestowed in the medium-sized category, which includes chambers that have between 250 and 499 members. The award was received for the HCCL’s extraordinary contributions to its commercial ecosystems, USHCC reps said. HCCL’s signature events include the Annual Town Hall Roundtable and Luncheon featuring the Chair of the USHCC; and the Annual Women’s Business Symposium which consists of a day of empowerment for women business owners and individuals featuring local and national speakers Local chambers from across the nation were evaluated for their outstanding accomplishments, leadership, service and commitment to the Hispanic business community. “Over the course of the past few years, we have set in motion a plan to become a Chamber that sets the bar for excellence for our members,” said Pineda. “I could not be more pleased with the results on what has been an effort by our brilliant team, board leadership and the outstanding members that are so committed to our success.”
The role of HCCL in Louisiana is critical due to the growth of the Hispanic population in the area. Foreign-born households contributed more than $7.6 billion to the gross domestic product (GDP) of the Greater New Orleans metro area. Immigrant-owned businesses generated more than $174 million in business income, and two out of three businesses are owned by U.S.-born Latinos while one out of three are owned by immigrant Latinos. HCCL is dedicated to the expansion of trade relations between the State of Louisiana and Latin America. This award is largely due to the effective implementation of HCCL’s mission to foster the continued economic growth, development, and promotion of Hispanic businesses and their associations in the state of Louisiana, and to serve as the conduit between the Hispanic business community and the community at large.•

Youth Movement Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Louisiana offers an outlet for rising young professionals to network and gain development opportunities By Sam Lucio
T
he Hispanic Chamber of C o m m e rc e o f L o u i s i a n a provides career development and community building to Hispanic youths in New Orleans. According to their mission, the Hispanic Young Professionals of Louisiana (HYPLA) “fosters the growth of the Hispanic young professional community through networking, leadership development, and community service.” HYPLA cultivates the development of Hispanic young professionals in the community by providing engaging opportunities to volunteer, network and learn. “These opportunities, as expressed by many members,” said Marina Manzanares, HYPLA Chair, “are highly rewarding, both personally and professionally.” Some of these events include a Lunch and Learn series where around 50 young Hispanic professionals learned how to overcome challenges from influential Hispanic 8

professionals, collaborations with other young professional groups at events such as YP Kart Nite where over 70 young professionals could network in a fun and relaxing environment, and a partnership with Junior Achievement which provided a platform for HYPLA members to engage with, share and inspire elementary aged children to become successful and responsible citizens. Through these events, HYPLA members are given an opportunity unlike any other. One of the founding members of HYPLA, Ernesto Posadas, said that being a member of HYPLA has allowed him to positively and effectively represent Latinos while also giving back to the community “I think it is so important to give back and make sure that our future generations have tangible access to positive role models,” Posadas said, “So many kids look up to a young Latino and say ‘hey if he can do it, so can I!’ And we always want to make
sure that our future generations are producing for our local economies.” As for Posadas’ personal career, HYPLA has allowed him to grow as a leader. Posadas represents Copa Airlines in the New Orleans Region and says he is extremely proud of his job as Copa Airlines is the first international flight connecting New Orleans to Latin America. “Through networking and volunteering, I have been able to not only guide my colleagues but also personally grow into a better professional,” Posadas said. Manzanares said that being a HYPLA member has allowed her to widen her network and develop relationships that fuel her professional development. “Through my HYPLA leadership I’ve had opportunities to address and raise awareness about some of the major issues affecting our community,” said Manzanares.

Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Louisiana Foundation The Mission of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Louisiana Foundation (HCCLF) is to foster the continued economic growth, development, and promotion of education within the Hispanic community by building capacity and helping find jobs as well as workforce opportunities in the Greater New Orleans Area. The HCCLF will provide free employment and training services to individuals within the Hispanic community in preparing and finding gainful employment. The program also offers a series of Business Development seminars open to the community. A Growing Workforce HCCLF provides professional training to the Hispanic community By Sam Lucio
T
he Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Louisiana Foundation (HCCLF) provides career development and community building to the Hispanic community The HCCLF, which is under the umbrella of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (HCCL), furthers the mission of HCCL by fostering the continued economic growth, development, and promotion of Hispanic businesses and their associations in the State of Louisiana, and to serve as the conduit between the Hispanic business community and the community at large. Since its beginnings, HCCLF has become stronger, created more awareness throughout the community and the surrounding area, built stronger partnerships through collaboration, and they intend to continue their growth. “We are just now at the point where our momentum is an energetic driving force,” said Blanca Robinson, HCCLF Chair. The overall goal of HCCLF is offering training and educating the New Orleans Hispanic community in preparation for their professional careers. According to Robinson, participants who enroll in the programs offered at HCCLF will receive a number of benefits. These benefits include training to improve their soft skills, computer literacy, assistance with resume writing and interview skills. Not everyone who enrolls in HCCLF may be looking for a new job. “They may just want to improve their skill sets to be better equipped in their current jobs or perhaps even as business owners,” said Robinson.
The HCCLF also offers numerous seminars and various other training programs, such as financial literacy, insurance needs, certification for your business, first-time home buying, English as second language classes in conjunction with Delgado Community College, and countless others. Robinson noted that HCCLF is the only organization in New Orleans that provides bilingual services and that because of this, HCCLF is constantly being approached by other organizations that wish to tap into the Hispanic community and offer additional services. And according to migrationpolicy. org, of the 161.8 million civilians in the labor force in 2016, 27.6 million (17 percent) are immigrants. “The need for bilingual employees is soaring,” said Robinson.
According to Robinson, because of this soaring demand, employers are offered a unique opportunity in hiring participants from HCCLF. “Employers gain the satisfaction of a new employee who is committed and eager to work, but more importantly, the knowledge that they are helping to build a much stronger and more influential Hispanic community,” said Robinson. HCCLF programs are open to anyone within the community who wants to gain more knowledge, become computer literate, improve their skills, and perhaps find a new job and any company who is looking for employees may contact HCCLF for job seekers.
