Spreading Peace Fourth grader Brennan Sherman of San Carlos, CA was so moved and inspired after reading the book, “Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes”, he started to fold origami paper cranes. Brennan delivered the origami cranes folded by him and his neighbors to the Sadako Peace Project at Pearl Harbor. He had a chance to see one of the actual cranes that Sadako folded. Within 10 minutes, he shared his cranes with visitors from all over the U.S., France, China, Japan, Australia and Canada!! Spreading the idea of world peace, cranes are already traveling to the corners of the earth!

President’s Message T

he quest for new knowledge, greater understanding, discovery – research is one of the key elements of Pacific Historic Parks’ mission. It’s been 76 years since that fateful day of December 7th – and we might ask: what more is there to research, what more is there that we don’t’ know of the events that took place, what more is there to learn?

The answer is really quite simple: history matters! It matters because history is about people, and people live through those who inherit their stories and their experiences. And when we link ourselves, feel the connection to those from our past – history lives. Through understanding of what came before, it’s said that we learn not to repeat the mistakes of the past. For the sake of future generations, let’s hope that our commitment to research and study World War II in the Pacific (including Pearl Harbor) will never end.

In this edition, we feature our new program – “Wounded Veterans in the Park,” a unique partnership with the National Park Service’s Submerged Resources Center and WAVES. Launched in February, WVIP involves our wounded service members in the scientific study, interpretation, and protection of the USS Arizona Memorial.

The program teams NPS underwater archaeologists with disabled veterans trained as scientific scuba divers to assist the Park Service with its ongoing management responsibilities of one of our nation’s most important memorials to military service and sacrifice.

From an interpretive park ranger in Guam, we will learn all about the importance of darkness and the problems of light pollution and their first public astronomy program at Asan Beach.

At Kalaupapa National Historical Park, studies have been done on the movement patterns of reef fish, which correlates with the issues of overfishing and the impact on coral reefs in Hawaii.

How we pass on information that has been gathered is a priority in the educational programs at all of our parks.

At Diamond Head State Monument, the crater is used as an outdoor classroom. At American Memorial Park, we have reached every fourth grade class in the public school system of CNMI. The stories of the Greatest Generation are being preserved for future generations through our “Rendezvous with History.” In this issue, we will meet Pearl Harbor Survivor Lt. Col. John Stevens, USMC (Ret.) Like most nonprofits, volunteers are the unsung heroes, the backbone of our organization. We have hundreds of volunteers helping us to preserve and honor the past, through their efforts in our education programs, activities in our parks, as interpretive resources, which includes our Pearl Harbor survivors and civilian eye witnesses, who spend countless hours with our visitors.

Through research and study – we always have the opportunity to discover something new, and hopefully as our eyes and hearts are opened, we can reach a new understanding of what is because of what was. Through research and studying the past, we will always be connected to people and the legacy of those who came before us through time. Let us always remember . . . and let us always strive together to inspire future generations to feel their connection to history!

Wounded Veterans in Parks

I

t’s Sunday afternoon at home, Easter Sunday to be precise, and the poignancy of the day is not lost on me as I sit at my computer and try to write. Easter— the holiday of rebirth and renewal—a fitting day to put words down on a screen and to try to describe what Pacific Historic Parks (PHP) and the National Park Service (NPS) is doing with our new initiative for some of our country’s most deserving individuals. Wounded Veterans in Parks (WVIP) is an innovative program supported jointly by PHP and the NPS to re-engage with our service members and allow them to renew their commitment to our country with specific, mission focused scuba diving operations. The newly launched WVIP program will involve our wounded service members in the scientific study, interpretation, and protection of one of our nation’s most important memorials to military service and sacrifice—USS Arizona. The program will augment NPS underwater specialists with disabled veterans trained as scientific scuba divers who will assist the Park Service with its ongoing management responsibilities for this American icon.

Seventy-six years ago, on the peaceful Sunday morning of December 7th, 1941, a brutal wave of history broke over USS Arizona and the Pacific Fleet in Hawaii. In a cataclysmic raid that heralded the end of the battleship era, aircraft from six Japanese aircraft carriers sprang an incredibly well planned and effective surprise attack on the naval forces of the United States. Tied up with the rest of the fleet, Arizona was a sitting duck in the narrow confines of Pearl Harbor. At approximately 8:06 AM, a colossal explosion obliterated the forward half of the battleship killing 1,177 of the ship’s sailors and marines.

Arizona sank to the floor of Pearl Harbor and burned for two days despite the heroic efforts of naval personnel to contain the damage and save the vessels that had endured relatively undamaged. Arizona was too far gone to be refloated or saved, and after several years of painful salvage work during which almost 200 bodies were removed from the ship, the vessel was declared a total loss. The men who remained unrecovered were declared “buried at sea.”

Although the ship was lost, it was never forgotten—“Remember Pearl Harbor” became the rallying cry for a nation fully engaged in the war with both Japan and Germany. After the war, Arizona remained a focus for reflection and remembrance, and in 1962 the current memorial was dedicated. In 1980, the NPS joined with the US Navy to tell the story of Arizona.

In the almost 40 years that the NPS has been the steward of Arizona, we have seen signs of rebirth and renewal on the ship. Rich colonies of coral, schools of fish, and environmentally sensitive species such as seahorses have partially transformed the shattered remains of a battleship into a carnival of life. Above water, as the years march onwards, change happens as well, and we work diligently to connect the story of the ship and her loss to new generations of visitors from all over the globe. In our interpretation of Arizona, we emphasize service, sacrifice, and commitment to goals as a nation. One group that has always grasped these messages are the men and women in uniform who work to protect us every day.

Because our veterans understand what Arizona means, it seemed fitting that they should be able to assist the NPS with the science and studies that will help preserve the ship for future generations. Who better than some of our wounded veterans—men and women who still feel drawn to serve, and those who have been marked by their service—to help the Park Service and Pacific Historic Parks in the solemn duty of protecting and preserving one of America’s most important military memorials?

The NPS Submerged Resources Center and PHP are connecting to veterans organizations with the drive, commitment, and mandate to assist with the NPS program of research on Arizona. The Wounded American Veterans Experience Scuba (WAVES) Project is a 501c (3) non-profit that has been established to provide an opportunity to American Veterans with service connected disabilities and a dive companion of their choice the experience of scuba diving for free. By training our wounded veterans as scientific divers and assisting the NPS with ongoing Arizona research, we will be moving the activity of scuba diving from

recreation to meaningful work on a site that has profound connections to all our service members. In addition, involvement with the NPS could highlight a path forward to a potential career that will allow these committed individuals to draw upon the skills of teamwork, task focus, and service to a greater good that they acquired in military in a new agency with a civilian mission.

In early March, staff from the NPS Submerged Resources Center teamed up with four members of the WAVES Project to measure oil release from Arizona and to document the current condition of the ship. With an estimated 500,000 gallons of oil still remaining on the battleship, the NPS is continually doing research such as remotely operated vehicle interior investigation, re-acquiring known GPS points, and oil collection in effort to monitor change. The March project was designed to utilize veterans along side SRC divers to deploy specifically designed oil catchment tents over known areas of the ship to determine the current 24hr oil release rate.

This short pilot project sponsored by PHP demonstrated that scientific diving within the wounded veteran community could be done safely and effectively on Arizona.

While the stories of each of the veterans involved in the project are theirs alone to share, the site and their experiences on the project clearly touched them deeply. While continuing their service to our country in a new way, our hope is that a reaffirmation of the value of their service and of their sacrifice via work on USS Arizona will foster rebirth and renewal in each of them in a way transcends the project and carries into their everyday lives in the civilian world. 

I just want to start by saying Thank You to everybody that made this incredible trip possible. This trip was very inspirational and humbling to say the least. I was able to see the names of my two great uncles who served on the USS Arizona inscribed on the wall and visit their resting place. I really enjoyed the project of collecting oil samples that are still floating up from the ship. I feel that WAVES Project, National Park Service and Pacific Historic Parks are starting a great program here. I hope to see it continue because being able to work with fellow Veterans is just what I need, and it shows that No One Is Ever Forgotten.

I look forward to being involved in other projects with the WAVES Project, National Park Services and Pacific Historic Parks.

Einstein This injury will never be okay for me; but I always have, and will, consider life a gift. Joy can be found anywhere, and not just in the good times but in an even more meaningful way when faced with challenges and obstacles … during the setbacks. My most fulfilling moments come from overcoming and succeeding in the face of great challenges. That’s what my life has been post injury. The recent Pearl Harbor Wounded Veterans In Parks (WVIP) project sponsored by Pacific Historic Parks in conjunction with the National Park Service (NPS) Submerged Resources Center (SRC), Wounded American Veterans Experience Scuba (WAVES) and World War II Valor in the Pacific National Monument gave me and our team the opportunity to overcome numerous challenges.

The partnership between PHP, NPS SRC, and veterans that live with a disability might seem like a photo op on the surface, but when you dig deeper, the message and meaning this project conveys is profound. Who better than a veteran to participate in the NPS stewardship of these sites that are iconic to our military and to our nation? But why a veteran living with a disability? At first glance this concept might seem foolish considering the potential additional time and accommodations needed to accomplish a mission. This partnership is clearly about more than repetitive motions and accomplishing work underwater. Don’t misunderstand me - completing the mission of oil collection on various sections of 6 | REMEMBRANCE SPRING 2018

USS Arizona was paramount for our team. But incorporating veterans living with a disability (physical and/or mental) is genius.

Service members transitioning into civilian life deal with a unique set of challenges; even more so when living with a disability. BUT we also bring a unique set of strengths, again, even more so with those of us living with a disability. Through the Pearl Harbor WVIP project we are given an opportunity to show that we can still be of service to this nation. It shows the abled body community what is possible. Perhaps in doing so we can begin to shatter preconceptions on what those with disabilities can do – rather than just what they can’t. Incorporating veterans living with a disability may motivate other veterans to grow and push past that moment – to engage. I truly believe future veterans participating in this project may surprise and motivate themselves. That’s what this project was for me. An opportunity to educate those around me and learn; about this site and about myself.

Gail Chew, Director of Development and Communications at PHP said it perfectly, “You all touched the soul of this place.” That is definitely true, but that site … the men that gave their lives that day ... the resulting battles in the Pacific Campaign … that war ... everything that’s wrapped up in that place also touched us. I know this project profoundly impacted all involved, whether they were doing work underwater or supporting the project behind the scene.

Save the Dark Skies

National Monuments, State Parks in the United States and around the globe that pride themselves as pieces of “land possessing an exceptional or distinguished quality of starry nights and nocturnal environment that is specifically protected for its scientific, natural, educational, cultural heritage and public enjoyment.”

H

umanity has been “fighting dark” for thousands of years. We have done everything we could to extend the light of day, be it using fire to lighten caves or coming up with LED lights, projectors, lasers, neon lights that light up whole cities and can be seen from space. We have been victorious in our battle against the dark. The question is “at what cost? ” In recent decades more and more scientists started talking about the importance of darkness. It became apparent that darkness plays an important role in our physical, mental and spiritual health. It was proven how vitally important darkness is for the natural world around us. Concepts such as “night pollution” became a part of everyday scientific and later popular jargon.

So how does light pollution affect us? The answer may surprise you. Here is a quote from the web site of the National Optical Astronomy Observatory: “Light pollution is excessive, misdirected, or obtrusive artificial (usually outdoor) light. Too much light pollution has consequences: it washes out starlight in the night sky, interferes with astronomical research, disrupts ecosystems, has adverse health effects and wastes energy.” Humans, just like the rest of the animal world have built-in cycle for sleep and wake patterns, hunger, activity, hormone production, body temperature and numerous other physiological processes. According to recent studies, people who are exposed to light at night increase their chances of suffering from obesity, depression, sleeping disorders and even cancer.

National Park Service recently recognized dark skies as a resource that needs protection. A number of prominent National Parks since then have become certified International Dark Sky Parks. Grand Canyon, Big Bend, Canyonlands, Great Basin, Death Valley, Joshua Tree National Parks are among many National Parks,

Two years ago, we organized our first public astronomy program at Asan Beach. To our astonishment, more than 600 people showed up to get a chance to gaze at the moon and planets. Standing near the telescope and helping visitors with their viewing experience, I could witness each person’s emotions.

“Wow,” “Amazing,” “Oh my Gosh,” was heard virtually from every viewer, be it a 5-year-old kid, or a senior.

The emotional effects of seeing details on the moon, the bands and moons of Jupiter, Saturn with its ring are hard to describe. It is a life experience. Most people never forget the first time they look at these and other astronomical objects through a telescope. The mere fact that people chose to stand in line for an hour just to get a glimpse of these objects for a few seconds – is the best testament to the fact that our night skies have a value that is impossible to measure in monetary units. The dark sky is a resource that needs protection.

Does that mean that we have to go back to the dark ages and deprive ourselves of the many benefits of electrical lights? Of course not; however, if we look around us, we’ll notice that much outdoor lighting used at night is inefficient, overly bright, poorly targeted, improperly shielded, and, in many cases completely unnecessary.

So next time you think of installing an outdoor light to illuminate your garage or backyard, think of the fact that your improperly installed lights may be blocking the view of a young wondrous child looking up at the stars, as millions of children and adults have done so for hundreds of thousands of years before us.

In March 2017, the Guam Naval Officers’ Spouses’ Connection awarded Pacific Historic Parks and War in the Pacific National Historical Park a donation of $600 to help purchase a telescope that was used for the “Night Under the Stars” astronomy education program, a successful collaboration and community involvement.  REMEMBRANCE SPRING 2018 | 7

The Crater as an Outdoor Classroom

Education and Research in Diamond Head State Monument

BY EMILY HAUCK, INTERPRETIVE RANGER, DIAMOND HEAD STATE MONUMENT Psychology’s Human Performance Lab, explains their findings, “In many situations, when we allow our bodies to become part of the learning process, we understand better. Reading about a concept in a textbook or even seeing a demonstration in class is not the same as physically experiencing what you are learning about. We need to rethink how we are teaching math and science because our actions matter for how and what we learn.”

T

he close proximity between Kapiolani Community College (KCC) and Diamond Head State Monument has allowed a continuation of collaboration between the two entities that has spanned generations. For 18 years, KCC and Diamond Head have been engaging in a program called Service Learning as a course-based and credit-bearing educational experience.

Service Learning offers participants a unique chance to learn in a natural outdoor setting. Students can identify a service activity within the community and volunteer in meaningful ways while furthering their education.

As a service learning site, the crater allows students to work with park staff on plant restoration projects that incorporate lessons in ecology. This is a great opportunity for students to build upon their resume, meet other passionate people within the community, and give back to the ‘aina. This past semester, students dedicated hundreds of man-hours improving the park while fulfilling their curriculum requirements. The hard work conducted by these KCC students has a benefit to the State Park, of course, but it also has significant influence over the quality of education students receive.

Studies suggest that hands-on learning is more likely to engage students and can ultimately lead to boosting their comprehension in certain subjects. According to a 2015 study by the University of Chicago (UC), students who physically experience scientific concepts understand them more deeply and score better on science tests.

Since 2013, Michael Ross, KCC Botany Instructor and Science Faculty Member, has been doing just that with his BIO 130 course. The fieldwork conducted by Ross and his students at Diamond Head has included sampling the vegetation on the outer slopes of the crater to study how the plant communities are changing over time. The data collected by the staff is shared with State Parks staff to assist with resource management and informed decision-making. Past surveys have detected some potentially threatening new non-native plant species, as well as a surprising number of native plant species. “Pedagogically, these types of partnerships are so valuable because they allow the students to go far beyond the confines of classroom learning and apply these techniques in the real-world,” according to Ross.

He believes in teaching outside the classroom and emphasizes the importance of ‘active learning’ methods.

“The students are able to simultaneously gain a deeper understanding of the types of methods currently being utilized in ecological field work,” Ross states, “while providing meaningful data to DLNR about changes in the natural vegetation around Diamond Head.” 

Every Kid in a Park

T

he Every Kid in a Park initiative was created with the goal of providing an opportunity for fourth grade students across the country to experience their federal public lands and waters in person. Through the program, Pacific Historic Parks and the National Park Service at American Memorial Park have reached every fourth grade class in the public school system of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI), reaching 603 students on three islands. However, this year’s Every Kid in a Park program isn’t over yet; American Memorial Park is continuing to reach out to fourth graders, inviting private schools to participate in the program as well. By the end of the school year, the park anticipates reaching eight public elementary schools and three private schools, with a total of 734 students participating in the program.

The Every Kid in a Park program is more than just a field trip. It begins with a visit to the school, in which PHP Education Specialist, along with an NPS Ranger give a presentation on national parks and introduce American Memorial Park and its mission. The presentation sparks student interest and they are often eager to learn more.

Lesson plans and materials are provided to teachers to continue the learning in class, allowing students to acquire knowledge about their island’s history, American Memorial Park, and national parks throughout the United States. During the field trip, students visit different parts of the park. They start in the Visitor Center, where they watch the film that includes a brief history of the CNMI, events leading up to World War II and the Battle of Saipan. Afterwards, students are given a presentation on the different sections of the museum and then taken on a guided tour.

Next, students are taken outdoors to explore the park grounds. They visit the Court of Honor and Flag Circle, in which 5,204 servicemen are honored with their names inscribed to remember their sacrifice during the Marianas Campaign of World War II. Students then walk to the

Marianas Memorial, which honors the indigenous people who lost their lives during the battle. The names of 929 civilians, both young and old are a reminder of the loss that many people endured. Students continue their walk, stopping at the Carillon Bell Tower, another memorial to honor all who lost their lives during the war. Before leaving, some time is spent to view the natural resources that are protected by the park, such as the Mangrove trees and the many types of birds that can be seen flying around.

Once students are back on the bus, their field trip doesn’t end there. American Memorial Park also maintains waysides at different historical sites throughout the island. Stops at a few of these sites, help students to make connections between what they learned and the actual sites that these battles occurred. To complete the program, once students are back at school they are asked to share what they have learned from their experience by submitting a reflection to the park. Students also receive an Every Kid in a Park pass that enables them to visit any national park in the country for free until their pass expires at the end of their summer. The Every Kid in a Park initiative has reached millions of fourth graders throughout the country. Rendezvous with History

T

he stories of the Greatest Generation are treasures.

We, at Pacific Historic Parks are committed to capture and preserve as many as we can before they are lost forever. Through the efforts of our volunteer Colin Cordy, who has spent countless hours, transcribing the many hours of recordings of oral history interviews, we are able to continue to savor the richness of the stories as they are passed down to us. As we share these gems, we hope to inspire to Remember, Honor, and Understand.

When asked of Colin, why do you volunteer at PHP? “I have lived on Oahu my whole life. At the age of nine, I discovered a love of stories and histories. I had gone to the Arizona Memorial and saw the ship underwater and looked at the names on the wall. For me they were just names on a wall that had no direct meaning to me.

I wanted to know why they died there and to know who these people were. So I bought a book there about the war in the Pacific and that led to a whole lot of other books. Now, if you fast forward to today, to hear more about the people who were there, how they saw things, and to view events from so many perspectives, this was a perfect way to continue the pursuit of my interests.”

Let’s meet Pearl Harbor Survivor, Lt Col John Stevens, USMC (Ret.) who joined the Marine Corps at the tender age of 18 in 1939. Times were tough for young John as he shares with us his experiences, a patriotic young man who wanted to do something with his life for his country, through an excerpt of his oral history.

Why did you join the Marines?

I had served two years in the Civilian Conservation Corps. Times were tough. I was born and raised in Butte, Montana, a mining town. And when the depression hit, it hit that town very hard. After I got out of the CCCs I couldn’t find a job. Butte was a Navy town. If people went into the services from Butte for some reason, they’d join the Navy. So I signed up with the local Navy recruiter to

Finally, I was called up, got on a train in the afternoon, played poker all night. When it came time for my physical exam, I passed everything except the eye exam. I failed the eye exam. As I was very sadly dejectedly walking out of the examination room, a man in bright blue pants and red stripe on the side called me and says. “Here’s some chits. Go get a good night sleep and food and come back here tomorrow.” I didn’t know it but he was a Marine recruiter. I didn’t even know there was a Marine Corps at this time. So I did as he said. I came back and the same doctor examined me. I passed no problem and I was on my way to San Diego to boot camp. That was 1939.

I went through boot camp fine. I didn’t have much of a problem because of my previous experience in the CCCs. At boot camp they had tests to determine where you would go after you completed. The tall good-looking guys were sent to sea school. They would go on ships as sea detachment guys. The guys who passed with good intelligence test would go to communications. They had two tests there. The first one was a tone test. If you passed the tone test, then you became a radio operator. If you didn’t pass, then you became a telephone man. I’m tone deaf, heehee, so I didn’t pass the radio, so I went to telephone school. After I completed that, I was assigned to an organization called the First Defense Battalion.

I was with that organization until the battalion was loaded up on the USS Enterprise in February 1941 to go to Pearl Harbor. One of these battalions had already been placed on Midway Island. Our battalion was destined to be split up; part to go to Wake Island, part to Palmyra and part to Johnston, and a core group at Pearl Harbor to act as a rotation group for the people in the outer islands. In the middle of 1941, I was with the people who had a rotating tour on Midway. I went out to Midway, spent a couple of months there and came back.

What happened on December 7?

I was asleep in my barracks bed. I heard all this noise. The barracks I was in, was about 1000 yards from number 10 dry-dock at Pearl Harbor. The permanent Marine barracks, was on the far side of the parade ground. We were on the near side to the harbor. I got up, I looked around, and I saw these planes. The planes were coming in dropping their bombs, then coming in and strafing the rest of the area where we were. I recognize what it was. I went back in, got dressed with my World War I tin hat on and my World War I leggings, cartridge belt, and my 1903 rifle which is what we were armed with at that time.

The Marine Corps got the bottom of everything. We didn’t get new rifles until August of 1942. We were still firing bolt action 1903 rifles. My job was to run wire to gun emplacements that had been predetermined. We went down to the gun shed. We had three inch guns and 50 caliber guns, but there was no ammunition there for the three inch guns. It wasn’t till 11 o’clock that day that we got antiaircraft ammunition. All we had up to that time was small arms and 50 caliber. But I got my crew together, the machine guns were deployed, and we started laying wire. It was a very sad scene. One of our gun emplacements was down near the naval hospital.

They were bringing the bodies out of the water and stacking them up like cord-wood by the hospital. The attack itself was over in a very short time. It was just a couple of hours, not very long. In my group, we had several people wounded, none killed. And I wasn’t touched. We spent the day refining our positions and listening to rumors, like “the Japanese have landed on the far side, the water supply is contaminated.” You can imagine the stories that would be circulating.

The two dock sections have collars that slide up and down vertical concrete piles to keep the dock sections from migrating.

Currently, the steel connectors are corroded and separating from the concrete, necessitating the closure of the dock section to the west.

The Privilege of Being a Volunteer

A

s a retiree, volunteer work was never on my mind, but after hearing the Pearl Harbor survivors tell their stories, I volunteered.

My assignments were interesting, but I wanted to do more.

Being on the World War II Valor in the Pacific National Monument ParkEd team, I became more involved by sharing my story as a witness to the Pearl Harbor attack - especially with the young folks. Now, nearly six years later and I love it!!! Why? School visits, are the norm, but my involvement grew exponentially. I participated in the video teleconferencing, distance learning program with students in Asia, Canada and throughout the United States. I was also given the opportunity to brief and escort international groups. I also had the honor of being the speaker at a Naturalization Ceremony at the park.

I have addressed thousands, young and old, from all corners of the world. Since 2016, I’ve visited more than 75 schools,

speaking to nearly 7,000 students and through the distance – learning program, interacted with over 200 students in Japan. A very significant event, was a one-day presentation, an “electronic field trip” exploring Pearl Harbor, presented by the National World War II Museum and WYES TV in New Orleans on Dec 7, 2016. Over 116 thousand students across the United States viewed the video.

Volunteering keeps me young- both mentally and physically, keeps me active while experiencing cultural differences, camaraderie and socialization, and so many other reasons.

Above all - “I CARE AND WANT TO SHARE - A PRIVILEGE, OPPORTUNITY AND HONOR – AN ACCOMPLISHMENT AND SATISFIED” which brings me HAPPINESS & ENJOYMENT. It’s a great experience in life.

It’s good for me as I plan to volunteer “forever,” with honor and the privilege to share a “little bit of history” from the eyes and ears of an 11 year old kid – 76 years ago! That’s why I volunteer! 

My Experience as a Volunteer for the Park

he Preservation Ranger Academy is a volunteer training program for high school students. As a Preservation Ranger, I was trained to educate 4th & 5th grade students during the Reef Ranger Summer Camp in marine sciences, historical and cultural significance of the parks in Guam and help Reef Rangers gain an appreciation for our island.

I was excited to apply for the program for several reasons. I knew how War in the Pacific National Historical Park is integral for preservation of the island and our culture and I have had several positive experiences volunteering for the parks in the past. Another reason was I was excited to take on such a unique leadership experience as a role model in educating and sharing appreciation for science and the environment.

I, along with all the other Preservation Rangers, received certification in First Aid, CPR & AED as well as water safety training. During the training, we part12 | REMEMBRANCE SPRING 2018

nered up, learned from our instructor and from each other.

Whenever we went snorkeling during the Reef Ranger Summer Camp, I would be a little nervous so I would constantly count the Reef Rangers in my group to make sure everyone was safe. Even though we were prepared for possible emergencies, the kids listened to the safety rules and instructions. I think that every day felt like a victory because nobody got hurt. I would jokingly add onto the accomplishments of the day, “Nobody drowned.”

During my service, I was amazed by the growth in not only my group of Reef Rangers, but others as well. From eating lunch to snorkeling with the Reef Rangers, there was a special bond.

One of my favorite activities was working on environmental skits, my group’s was about threats to coral reefs. My Reef Rangers were really engaged in the creative process of creating our skits, the plot, lines, painting, and more. They proudly presented the skits on the last day, in front of their parents at the Reef Ranger ceremony.

This volunteer program has helped improve my communication and teaching skills through presenting information to the Reef Rangers. I really enjoyed teaching the Reef Rangers and encouraging their intellectual curiosity.

I personally found the program very fulfilling. Along with making friends, I felt a sense of camaraderie with the other Preservation Rangers and my Reef Rangers. Other Preservation Rangers enthused that the Academy had a positive impact on them and shaped them into leaders with new responsibilities and skills.

Being a Preservation Ranger was a good experience and it provided me a unique volunteer experience. Even when the summer was over, Preservation Rangers would be invited to volunteer together.

Whether it’s a coral reef monitoring survey or a parks event, we would get together and catch up afterwards. If I didn’t join, I might not have met and made friends with the people I did. The Preservation Ranger Academy program was a worthwhile experience and I’m glad I joined. 

Sharks in the Park

verfishing and habitat degradation greatly impact coral reefs and components of the fish assemblage such as reef predators. The lack of natural baselines reduces our ability to understand how natural ecosystems function and how best to conserve and manage them under human stress. Remote locations with limited fishing pressure, such as Kalaupapa National Historical Park (KALA) on the island of Moloka‘i, are among the few places in the main Hawaiian Islands where this information can be obtained. Understanding the movement patterns and extent of home ranges of reef predators will assist the park in conserving these animals. To this end we used passive acoustic telemetry to investigate the spatial and temporal movement patterns of four reef predator species: blacktip reef sharks (Carcharhinus melanopterus), whitetip reef sharks (Triaenodon obesus), giant trevally (Caranx ignobilis), and bluefin trevally (Caranx melampygus).

Over the course of the study, 12 acoustic receivers were deployed around the park and detected 14 of the 18 tagged predators with detection spans ranging from 2 to 873 days. Both reef shark species exhibited long-range movements with one whitetip moving at least 10.8 km and the blacktip spanning the entire 13.5 km coastline of the park. In shallow areas of Iliopi‘i bay, the whitetip reef sharks were generally detected during the evening, while the blacktip reef shark was found during the day, primarily in the afternoon hours, coinciding with the daily water temperature increase. Giant and bluefin trevally

showed variable degrees of fidelity among individuals with 9 out of 13 showing long-term detection spans. Two out of four tagged giant trevally had high detection rates, primarily near the northern part of the peninsula where they were captured. They were also detected on the west side of the peninsula, with a minimum movement range of 6.1 km. Bluefin trevally detection rates were generally low and detection locations varied among individuals with a minimum movement range of up to 6.3 km.

The receiver network at KALA also collected data on 18 tiger sharks (Galeocerdo cuvier) tagged in other locations. The receiver located near the settlement had the highest number of tiger shark detections followed by the receiver at Kalawao. Tiger shark detections predominately occurred during the winter months. Tiger sharks were transient visitors to the park with the exception of one individual which was regularly detected over a twomonth period.

Based on the movement patterns of these species, it is likely that the boundaries of KALA encompass the home ranges of the blacktip reef sharks and bluefin trevally found there, and some proportion of the local whitetip reef shark and giant trevally populations. Isolation and natural forces have provided protection for these vulnerable and ecologically important reef predators, but additional steps can be taken to ensure their survival into the future. 

HONORING THE PAST, INSPIRING THE FUTURE

T

he poignant theme of the 75th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor resonated as visitors gathered to honor and pay tribute to the legacy of the Greatest Generation.

More than 10,000 people including more than 200 Pearl Harbor Survivors and World War II Veterans made the long journey from all across our nation to commemorate this anniversary to honor the sacrifice and dedication of our Greatest Generation. December 1 - 11, 2016 was a time of reflection, remembrance and commitment. They participated in 50 wide ranging events, public and private, which included the National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day Commemoration at Kilo Pier. 5,000 were in attendance at Kilo Pier with an additional 3,000 viewing live stream at the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center.

One of Pacific Historic Parks’ goals to fulfill its mission is to reach out across the generations by leveraging current technology and emerging communication platforms to reach a larger global audience.

On December 4, PHP presented to Pearl Harbor Survivors and World War II Veterans the first view of our Virtual Reality mobile app of the USS Arizona Memorial.

This enables the sharing of history not only with the younger visitor but with people around the world who might not have the opportunity to experience Pearl Harbor in person.

This includes interactive educational exhibits available onsite, online, and through mobile devices; as well as a migration to an interactive, guided tour, and a smart searchable online national database. This will also provide the National Park Service with a foundation for future content management, public access, and ongoing education.

Kalaupapa National Historical Park has a long-standing restriction against entry for anyone under the age of 16. How can we engage local Molokai children in the powerful story of Kalaupapa? We bring the park to the people! Over three days, staff packed up their gear and engaged over 240 students in hands on activities, demonstrations, a hike and a field trip to help bring the Kalaupapa story alive.

Our legacy – the Pearl Harbor Survivors and World War II Veterans are very special to us at each of our parks.

It is our responsibility to remember and honor these members of the Greatest Generation and share their legacies to inspire future generations by capturing these stories through our “Rendezvous with History” oral history program.

PHP conserves critical resources, such as the preservation of grave markers for the thousands of patients who lived in Kalaupapa, through rehabilitation of the Pali Trail, and by providing a shelter to be used as an outdoor classroom for students unable to visit the settlement.

Restoration of the Court of Honor and Flag Circle Memorial, which were damaged when Saipan took a direct hit from Super Typhoon Soudelor, were completed.

Honouliuli National Monument, a place of detention during World War II in Hawaii, is now a place to reflect on wartime experiences and recommit to the pursuit of freedom and justice. Partnering with internment sites regionally, as well as the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii, National Park Service staff at World War II Valor in the Pacific National Monument are creating the Foundation Document to identify the purpose, significance, key interpretive themes, and fundamental resources. This document when completed will provide a strategic “road map” to ensure that all work will honor the multifaceted history of Honouliuli National Monument.

We help maintain a high standard of visitor services by supplying required support staff and materials.

Pacific Historic Parks values the importance of history – it needs to be protected, researched, preserved, and passed on to future generations.

The Legacy Society Create a legacy that will ensure history will never be forgotten

Since 1980, millions of people from every state of our nation and from 40 countries around the world have seen, experienced, and been inspired by the valor and sacrifices of the Greatest Generation at Pearl Harbor and throughout the Pacific Basin. The Legacy Society was created to acknowledge and celebrate family and friends who desire to keep history alive and to honor the sacrifices of the World War II generation. Members have affirmed Pacific Historic Parks in their estate plans or through other planned gifting arrangements.

Planned gifts provide a unique opportunity to preserve our country’s military heritage through supporting Pacific Historic Parks while possibly receiving tax benefits on income.
