PRESIDENT & CEO MESSAGE
This spring issue of Remembrance focuses on a pair of special events happening in late May involving the USS Arizona Memorial.

An exhibit on the grounds of the Pearl Harbor National Memorial examines the life story of the architect who designed the USS Arizona Memorial.
Alfred Preis is the Austrian immigrant of Jewish descent who with his wife fled the Nazis in Europe only to be locked up in Honolulu as suspected enemy aliens the night after the December 7, 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor.
The exhibit will coincide with the USS Arizona Memorial turning 60 years old this coming Memorial Day. It opened on May 30, 1962, following years of debate, along with public and private fundraising that included a concert at the Bloch Arena by Elvis Presley.
This issue also covers the solemn interment services for USS Arizona crewmembers who survived the day of infamy, and then chose to be buried with their shipmates still entombed on the Arizona. There have been 45 interments, the first one happened in 1982 and the 45th this past December 7 on the attack’s 80th Commemoration. From Kalaupapa National Historical Park on Molokai, we bring you the story of how patients in the Hansen’s Disease colony heard about the Pearl Harbor attack, and how they reacted. And we then fast forward to the present with an update on how the remaining patients are coping with the pandemic.
Finally, we take you to a packed ballroom in Waikiki where Chinese American veterans who served in World War II were presented with one of our nation’s highest honors, the Congressional Gold Medal.
We hope you enjoy this issue and we thank you for your continued support of Pacific Historic Parks. Your support helps us accomplish our mission to Remember, Honor and Understand World War II in the Pacific.
