It's the 75th anniversary of the American effort to secure Saipan and Tinian in the Northern Marianas Islands.
The 25-day battle began after American forces stormed the beaches of the Japanese stronghold in June 1944. Thousands of soldiers on both sides were killed. Casualties included 900 Chamorros and Carolinians.
Our Pacific Historic Parks team at American Memorial Park documents the war years with a special focus on the experiences of the civilian population caught in the crossfire.
