A message from the President Pacific Historic Parks has become a leading partner of the National Park Service as a result of the highly successful fundraising campaign that led to the construction of the visitor center at WWII Valor in the Pacific National Monument, Pearl Harbor. Having visited the USS Arizona Memorial several times, I was very excited to see the opening of the excellent new visitor center and the significant improvement of the overall visitor experience at the site.

In years past, visitors obtained a numbered boarding pass and had to wait on site until their group number was invited into the theatres and on the Memorial itself. This wait was often several hours long. Today, boarding passes include a specific time and can be reserved in advance online at www.recreation.gov. Perhaps more importantly, there is simply a lot more to see and do at Pearl Harbor, including visiting our site partners the USS Bowfin Submarine Museum & Park, the Battleship Missouri Memorial, and the Pacific Aviation Museum. Whether a visitor is interested in World War II aircraft, the location of surrender aboard the Battleship Missouri, or seeks a greater understanding of the War through the “silent service� of submarines, one can have a more in-depth experience.

Working with our partners, PHP has recently started marketing both full and half day passes that allow visitors to customize their visit to Pearl Harbor. These Passports to Pearl Harbor can also be reserved in advance online at recreation.gov. Pearl Harbor has become a visitor destination, as opposed to a quick tour stop.

Working the front line at our bookstore, I met several families who opted to utilize the Passport to Pearl Harbor and spend a full day onsite - from 7:00 a.m. until the park closes at 5:00 p.m. One father, whose family had been at Pearl Harbor all day, commented that not only did they have a full day of experiences and learning opportunities, but that his kids were still smiling and having a great time. To me, this is an excellent step forward in enhancing the visitor experience.

Thinking about the Memorial itself, I am pleased to let our members know that Pacific Historic Parks has been leading a campaign to fund the most comprehensive refurbishment the Memorial has received during its more than 50 years of service and more than five million visitors. Their impact, along with the harsh marine environment, has left the Memorial in need of significant restoration. With the generous support of donors throughout the nation and the world, we were able to begin phase one of the refurbishment in early June. This phase included replacing the railings, skylights, and viewing well lighting. Abandoned electrical conduits were removed and historic light fixtures and switches were brought back to mint condition, along with a myriad of other minor repairs. This iconic national memorial is in the best condition since her dedication in 1962. We are seeking at least an additional $500,000 to complete the funding for phase one and two of the restoration. This includes replacing the Shrine Room wall, which lists the Sailors and Marines who are still on duty aboard the USS Arizona. Whether providing educational materials or educational experiences, Pacific Historic Parks seeks to enhance the visitor experience at Pearl Harbor, and at our parks in Guam, Saipan and Kalaupapa.

Introducing the half day Passport to Pearl Harbor Pacific Historic Parks and Pearl Harbor Historic Sites recently announced the new half day Passport to Pearl Harbor.

Depending on the package, half day Passport prices range from $15 to $27.50 for adults and $11 to $17 for children. Visitors purchasing a half day Passport to Pearl Harbor can expect to spend between four and five hours on site.

War in the Pacific NHP opens new museum exhibits The grand opening celebration Government officials, community leaders, and Guam liberators gathered at the T. Stell Newman Center at War in the Pacific National Historical Park on Guam on July 20 for the grand opening of the park’s new WWII exhibits.

Soft openings of the exhibits were held earlier in the week for the island’s educators and tourism industry professionals. The exhibits were officially opened to the public on Guam’s Liberation Day, July 21.

Nine years in the making, the state-of-theart exhibits were funded by the National Park Service and Pacific Historic Parks, and designed by Daniel Quan Design. The original visitor center and exhibits were destroyed in December 2002 by Super-typhoon Pongsonga.

The grand opening included remarks from War in the Pacific NHP’s Superintendent Barbara Alberti; Assistant Secretary for Insular Areas, U.S. Department of the Interior, Anthony Babauta; and Regional Director, Pacific West Region, National Park Service, Christine Lehnhertz.

During her keynote, Lehnhertz stated, “[The museum] is an achievement--the tech-

nology here. It is amazing, and is frankly very cool as well.”

After a ribbon cutting ceremony in front of the T. Stell Newman Center, the more than 150 attendees were allowed to tour the exhibits and enjoyed a reception, provided

by Pacific Historic Parks.

Attendees at all three exhibit openings were given Pacific Historic Parks’ newest publication, Guide to the Historic Treasures of Guam. The book provides information on each of the seven National Park Service sites on the island.

State-of-the art technology, interactive exhibits Exhibits at the T. Stell Newman Center incorporate the latest technology, including multi-media, projectors, interactive touch panels, and tactile maps.

The centerpiece of the museum is a topographic map of the island. Monitors display historic pictures and video of the Battle of Guam above the map while two multi-color lasers move over the map to show troop and airplane movements (see photo 4).

ings, historical photos, images of artifacts and more. Visitors can zoom out to view the events by year, zoom in to view them by month, and slide their finger across the screen to view the timeline from beginning to end (see photo 7).

Touch bins located throughout the museum allow children to interact with WWII replicas, including military hats (see photo 5), mess kits, and other daily life objects.

According to Adam Leopold, Systems Engineer and Technology Consultant from Harpers Ferry Design Center, the exhibits at War in the Pacific National Historical Park are at “the forefront of technology within the National Park Service, even surpassing most other government and private organizations providing comparable services.”

Improved access The new exhibits at the T. Stell Newman Center now meet or exceed the latest accessibility standards under the Americans with Disabilities Act. Captioning is provided throughout the museum for those who are deaf or hard of hearing and an audio description of the exhibits is available for the blind and visually impaired.

Foreign language speakers also enjoy improved access. The new 10-minute movie, “The Battle for Guam,” has been translated into Japanese, Korean, and Mandarin, and text throughout the museum has been translated into Chamorro and Japanese.

Wreath laying ceremony honors fallen heroes Guam liberators, civilian survivors, and community leaders gathered at Asan Bay Overlook on Guam on July 20 to commemorate the U.S. Forces and Chamorro men and women who perished during the Battle of Guam.

Held the day before Guam’s Liberation Day, a celebration of the island’s independence from Japanese occupation during WWII, the ceremony began with a presentation by the Color Guard. Barbara Alberti, Superintendent of War in the Pacific National Historical Park, and Governor Eddie B. Calvo delivered speeches that emphasized peace and remembrance.

Three of Guam’s U.S. liberators were honored during the event: Thomas Spry, Sr.; Dan Bradly; and Gerald Hanson.

Following a rendition of echo “Taps” performed by members of the III Marine Expeditionary Force Band, USMC, the wreaths and 1,001 cranes or tsuru were presented along a path leading up to the

outlook and memorial.

Pacific Historic Parks’ wreath was dedicated to the Chamorro men who died during the attack on Pearl Harbor and placed in front of a memorial listing their names. The memorial, located at the top of the outlook, was donated by PHP (then the Arizona Memorial Museum Association) in 2003.

Completed in 1994, Asan Bay Overlook is one of seven National Park Service sites on Guam. The Overlook includes a memorial that lists the names of the 16,142 individuals who died, were injured, or interred during the Occupation and Battle for Guam. The memorial does not list all the names of those who should be recognized and a list of additional names has been prepared for a future update. The unit also includes bronze sculptures that depict the events on Guam during the Japanese occupation from 1941-1944.

This grave marker in Kahaloko Cemetery was once completely hidden by brush.

An estimated 8,000 people died on the Kalaupapa Peninsula, yet, only 1,500 grave markers exist to chronicle the lives of those people who lived and died here. Grave markers represent the people who experienced both suffering and joy here in Kalaupapa. Weather, natural disaster, invasive species, and people all pose threats to these reminders of the past. A large number of grave markers in the Papaloa Cemetery were destroyed by the 1946 tsunami. Today, cemeteries across the peninsula are being brought back from neglect and disrepair. Time and energy must be spent to preserve and maintain these sites, in honor of those who died here.

An ongoing National Park Service program protects these sites, which stretch from beyond the beach houses of Kalaupapa to the shores of Kalawao.

Kahaloko Cemetery, located along the road to Kalawao, is one of the sites in the preservation process. Just four years ago, the entire cemetery was covered in brush and trees. The grave sites, and thus the information about the people buried there, was inaccessible. With the help of volunteer groups, and all divisions within the Park Service, the cemetery was cleared, and returned to dignity.

PHP is proud to support this program and honor those who lived and died in Kalawao and Kalaupapa.

Saipan schools say hafa adai and thank you Schools throughout Saipan, part of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, are receiving educational assistance through an innovative program developed by the Saipan Tribune, a local newspaper, and the Tan Siu Lin Foundation.

Now in its fourth year, the program, Partners in Education, sponsors newspaper distribution to island public and private schools, ensuring “that our children receive the world’s most up-to-date textbook: the newspaper.”

Tan Siu Lin Foundation manager Ed Arriola discussed why foundation president Jerry Tan chose this medium: “Ultimately, children are able to have the most up-to-date textbook in their hands every morning and the teachers are better able to [explain] current events to them in a language suitable for their age group.”

As a program sponsor, Pacific Historic Parks received a certificate of appreciation and thank you letters from school children on Saipan. The sentiments expressed apply to all loyal members of the organization whose support has allowed PHP to sponsor the program.

As the certificate states, “Your contribution to the Partners in Education program is invaluable.”

Happy 96th birthday National Park Service!

he park rangers at WWII Valor in the Pacific National Monument hosted familyfriendly activities at Neil S. Blaisdell Park on Oahu on August 25 to celebrate the National Park Service’s 96th birthday, otherwise known as Founders Day. The free event was an opportunity for children to learn about Honouliuli Internment Camp, start a family oral history project, meet Pearl Harbor civilian witness Jimmy Lee, and speak with park rangers. Children who completed all of the activities earned an honorary Junior Ranger badge and certificate.

Children received a free Passport to Pearl Harbor VIP Pass, which includes entrance to the Battleship Missouri Memorial, Pacific Aviation Museum, USS Bowfin Submarine Museum and Park, and the audio tour at the USS Arizona Memorial.

The school with the most students at the event was awarded a $500 gift certificate to the Pacific Historic Parks bookstore at the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center for education materials. There was a tie between Waikele Elementary School and Aliamanu Elementary School; the prize money was split between the schools.

Pacific Historic Parks is proud to support National Park Service community events.

Honouliuli internment camp: a dark time in history By: Carolyn Knoll, Park Guide/Volunteer Coordinator, World War II Valor in the Pacific National Monument

S

tanding in front of the Monsanto building on a Saturday morning, waiting for our tour of the Japanese internment camp at Honouliuli to begin, I was transported back in time to another Saturday morning in the mid-70s.

I was living and working in Berkeley, California, meandering through the aisles of a bookstore where I found a book of photographs about the Japanese internment camps during World War II. I still have the strong emotional reaction that I felt back then. I was both astonished and appalled.

As I looked at the pictures, I thought, “How could my country do this? These were American citizens. And, more importantly, why hadn’t I learned about this in school?”

As the years went by, I learned that these WWII internment camps were one of my country’s darkest moments.

The tour of the Honouliuli internment camp was arranged with Monsanto, the owner of the property, by the Japanese Cultural Center Hawaii for some of the Park Rangers working at World War II Valor in the Pacific National Monument. The monument tells the history of World War II in the Pacific, which includes the Japanese internment.

We passed an old building on our way to the site which we were told later may have been the administration building. The building is falling down, but no one has the courage to go near it because it houses a large colony of wasps. For some native peoples, wasps symbolize order, construction, communication, development, and productivity. I find it interesting and ironic that wasps are occupying an internment camp’s administration building.

As we drove farther down the gulch, I tried to imagine what it would have been like to be an internee, snatched from my home, away from my family, arriving in this isolated area of Oahu. The camp was already built, most likely by the military. We parked near a retaining wall that dated back to those days.

We entered the site by walking down stairs made of wooden blocks that led to a cement slab, the remains of the camp mess hall.

Our guides from Japanese Cultural Center Hawaii showed us a drawing made by one

of the internees of the same mess hall with no walls. The photos of the camp showed the mess hall with walls. We surmised that the initial mess hall may not have had walls in order to make it easier for the guards to watch the internees.

The area is quite overgrown with grasses and trees. Volunteers have cleared much of the area, but it grows back very quickly. We made our way from the mess hall past an old rusty military vehicle, partially hidden in the trees. Seeing this old vehicle gave me a very eerie feeling—as if I was going back in time.

We climbed upwards to another set of cement block stairs. One of the volunteers told us that when they were clearing the area, they discovered stairs leading to a guard tower when a volunteer sat down on a rock to rest. The rock was a section of the staircase leading to the foundation of the tower, which they discovered after some exploration. The area was on a rise that would have been looking down on the camp. The foundation, with the holes where the guard tower legs were placed, was there for us to see. The date, January 21, 1943, was visible on the base. I wondered how the internees must have felt being watched every minute of every day and night.

Our last trek was to a cement foundation that could have been a laundry building or latrine. We found an old broken toilet and quite a few holes, drainage of some sort.

Most of us commented about how hot it was in the gulch on an otherwise mild day in May. I can’t imagine how miserable the weather must have been for the internees in July and August—hot, humid with no breezes, and mosquitoes in the billions, both day r e m e m b r a n c e

and night. I am sure they couldn’t sleep.

They were so isolated, away from their families and the civilized world.

Unfortunately, our time at the site had to end. We were scheduled to visit the Japanese Cultural Center Hawaii to explore their resources and find out more about Honouliuli. We said goodbye to the site and its ghosts (including the wasps occupying the administration building).

At the Japanese Cultural Center Hawaii building, we watched a movie about the internment of the Japanese in Hawaii. Approximately 1,200 local Japanese were arrested, along with about 100 local Germans and Italians. The interned Japanese were a small percentage of the Japanese population here in Hawaii in 1941, but the impact was significant because many of the men arrested were influential in the community.

Honouliuli Internment Camp opened on March 1, 1943. It was built on 160 acres and could hold 3,000 people. At its peak, however, it held only about 320 detainees. Most were American citizens by birth.

There were four other internment camps in Hawaii: Sand Island on Oahu, which was

closed when Honouliuli was opened; Kalaheo Stockade on Kauai; Haiku Camp on Maui; and Kilauea Military Camp on the Big Island.

Historic Hawaii Foundation members visit USS Arizona Memorial The Historic Hawaii Foundation with the National Park Service recently organized a tour and lecture at the USS Arizona Memorial and Pearl Harbor Visitor Center to coincide with September 11.

More than 40 HHF members attended the event and enjoyed a guided, after hours tour of the USS Arizona Memorial with National Park Service Rangers and World War II Valor in the Pacific National Monument Chief Historian Daniel Martinez.

After the tour, attendees went to a panel discussion on the role of memorials in preserving collective memory, why our society develops memorials, and the current status of some of Honolulu’s pre-eminent monuments, including the Honolulu Memorial at National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific at Punchbowl and the Waikiki Natatorium War Memorial. Glenn Lane laid to rest with his shipmates Glenn H. Lane, a Survivor of the USS Arizona and the USS Nevada on December 7, 1941, rejoined his Arizona shipmates in a somber interment ceremony held aboard the USS Arizona Memorial on September 12, 2012.

Attended by his family, the ceremony was held in the Memorial’s Shrine Room, the first time an interment has been held there.

Palm Springs/Yucca Valley chapter makes final donations The Palm Springs/Yucca Valley chapter of the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association made two monetary donations, which officially ended its existence. Two hundred dollars was donated to the Guide Dogs of the Desert, in name of late chapter president Don Jones.

The other donation was made to the USS Arizona Memorial Restoration project in the amount of $650.

Dear Sir, I was a member of the Armed Forces and stationed at Schofield Barracks as a Staff Sergeant with the 24th Signal Corps on December 7, 1941, the day of the attack by the Japanese Naval Air Forces. I became a Pearl Harbor Survivor participating for perhaps 40 years as a PHSA member to keep alive the honorable memories of those that died that day.

Perhaps at the urging of a local teacher, I participated in school activities on Memorial Day, Veterans Day, and each December 7 in Pearl Harbor Day ceremonies.

At one time this area had 36 Survivors; now we are down to four, and two are ailing. We continue to tell the story of Pearl Harbor to honor our fallen comrades.

Our pledge is one of continuation until our dying day.

Knowing that our ages and illnesses would catch up with us, I was hoping that someone would step forward and continue to remember and honor our fallen comrades of that day. That prayer was answered with acceptance of that duty by Pacific Historic Parks. Thank you so very much.

I am enclosing some pictures of the Group of Seven– of which three passed away. But as I wrote before, those honors and memories will be kept alive as long as we have breath in us.

his little tugboat has seen its share of nautical history, and still has at least one dent to prove it.

The former USS Hoga, destined to become a preserved Mississippi River waterfront museum in Arkansas, came to roost temporarily on Tuesday morning at Mare Island for repairs.

The 71-year-old Navy vessel, most recently a tenant at the Suisun Bay Reserve Fleet, is a floating national historic landmark best known for a historic defensive role in the infamous Dec. 7, 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor.

The tugboat, with its firefighting capabilities, helped tow the stranded battleship USS Nevada out of a major harbor channel it was blocking. A dent from its contact with the Nevada was purposely maintained since the historic battle.

USS Hoga was tugged with a bit of pomp and circumstance to Allied Defense Recycling’s Mare Island shipyard docks at about 11 a.m. Tuesday, a series of water cannons shot off in welcome. Aboard was the mayor of North Little Rock, Ark., its ambassador.

“It was a tribute to the old lady, and she is a lady,” said Allied Defense Recycling General Manager Gary Whitney, referring to the vessel.

Within months, the Hoga will join the USS Razorback, a submarine already moored in North Little Rock -- capstones to the beginning and end of World War II. “There have been some questions of why does North Little Rock (pop. 62,000) want a submarine ... and a tugboat,” Hays said. “These two vessels, both in preservation and history and our reflection on it, to (be able to) share that history with future generations, to me, is extremely important that we don’t pass up.”

The Razorback was one of 12 submarines chosen to be present in Tokyo Bay when the Japanese surrender was signed on Sept. 2, 1945, according to the city-owned Arkansas Inland Maritime Museum (www.aimm.museum), near where the two will be docked.

ment municipal fire boat, and hosted a tour by former President Jimmy Carter.

The Navy signed over the tugboat to the museum in 2005, after about two years of effort. The museum beat out several entities competing for the donation, Hays said. Fundraising efforts, timing and the economy have delayed its removal from Suisun Bay until recently, Hays said.

By coming to the Mare Island shipyard, Hays is hoping to avoid the exorbitant cost of having to lift the 325-ton tugboat by crane onto a barge, so that it may travel safely. Instead, with Allied Defense Recycling’s help, the Hoga will have its hull made seaworthy and its large open body divided into several watertight compartments, making it less susceptible to sinking during transport, he said. The Navy must first agree to this alternate plan, though, Hays said.

Some parts will be scavenged from two ex-Navy tugboats abandoned at the Port of Richmond. The vessels are in the Mare Island’s Dry Dock 2 for dismantling, said Whitney, the general manager.

Sea-going tugboats Lion and Tiger, formerly known as the USS Quapaw and USS Moctobi, were built just a few years after the Hoga.

Hays, whose 24-year run as mayor will end in January, said he may return to Mare Island to travel with her on her final journey to Arkansas.

On August 1 at 8 a.m., another vessel -- the Mare Island-built submarine tender Nereus -- left the shipyard on its final voyage to Texas for dismantling. Allied Defense Recycling has had the 67-year-old vessel since July 17 for cleaning and repairs.
