PRESIDENT & CEO MESSAGE

This issue is dedicated to those who served and died on that world-changing day in our nation’s history, December 7, 1941.

Due to COVID, the 79th anniversary of Pearl Harbor Day held on December 7, 2020 became virtual, much like the 75th end of war commemoration that happened on September 2, 2020 aboard the battleship USS Missouri.

But this time even the World War II veterans who planned to attend in person watched from the safety of their homes, vowing to return in person for the 80th anniversary on December 7, 2021.

This year’s theme: Above and Beyond The Call: Battlefield Oahu, reflecting the fact it wasn’t just Pearl Harbor that was attacked, it was the island of Oahu. The carnage delivered that Sunday morning impacted military bases and civilian communities, resulting in 2,390 lives lost.

A special wreath ceremony focused on the island wide nature of the attack and a tribute to veterans was voiced by one of the two remaining survivors of the USS Arizona, Lou Conter. The retired Naval officer taped an interview from his California home and was one of those vowing to return next year when he will be 100. If you missed the commemoration, including those two videos, check them out on our website.

Our other coverage includes an exclusive look at the special tours to the USS Arizona Memorial arranged that day for WWII veterans who due to COVID didn’t attend the early morning commemoration.

And we have a behind the scenes report on the family ties this year’s emcee has with Pearl Harbor Day.

Finally, we go to the museum archives to reprint a portion of the August 2, 1941 edition of At Em Arizona with a link to our website to read the entire newsletter. We also report on the historical importance of saving these newsletters.

Mahalo to the photographers who make Remembrance special. Our cover photo from the 79th virtual ceremony at Pearl Harbor of U.S. Marines in masks is a contrast to our back cover photo showing the late Pearl Harbor survivor and Kauai native Al Rodrigues being saluted after exiting the 74th anniversary in 2015.

We hope you will enjoy this issue dedicated to the events that transpired on December 7, 1941. And we thank you for supporting our mission to Remember, Honor and Understand World War II in the Pacific.
