PRESIDENT & CEO MESSAGE This issue’s cover story focuses on the 75th Anniversary of the end of World War II commemoration events held here on September 2, 2020.

Like so many other disruptions COVID has caused, the historic ceremonies had to be scaled back. That included cancelling parades, open houses and dinners, along with visits by Mainland wartime veterans.

And while those were gut wrenching decisions, the significance of the anniversary should never be forgotten. We look back at the inspiring events on board the USS Missouri on the morning of the 75th anniversary and up in the skies as vintage warbirds flew over, replicating what happened in Tokyo Bay on September 2, 1945.

Our other coverage includes a look back at the history of the atomic bombs that were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaka.

And we explore the role the Pan Am Clipper played following the attack on Pearl Harbor.

As this edition goes to press, we continue to monitor the pandemic which has had a severe impact on so many nonprofits and businesses in Hawaii that rely on visitors. That includes Pacific Historic Parks.

The good news is that after being closed twice since March due to the pandemic, the Pearl Harbor National Memorial, home of the USS Arizona Memorial, is open. Tourism is slowly coming back with the relaxing of the quarantine rules for travelers who

test negative on a COVID test before boarding a flight.

We know our local and national economy has a long way to go before full recovery. So we have pivoted to bring the story of World War II in the Pacific through virtual field trips.

In partnership with Timelooper, our education team is bringing historical moments to life by transporting the viewers to the past using next generation technology. Our focus will be on students, including the 40,000 who last year came to the Pearl Harbor National Memorial and visited the USS Arizona Memorial, one of our country’s most iconic war graves.

With COVID, Mainland and international students have scaled back travel, while Hawaii students aren’t yet allowed to board buses for field trips. We will bring the field trips to them, virtually, which has become the new norm.

These field trips will help keep history alive as members of our greatest generation, men and women in the late 90’s and early 100’s, continue to slip away.

With your support, we will help current and future generations never forget it was the Greatest Generation that helped beat tyranny and saved our democracy.

A TRIBUTE TO VETERANS ON A KEY ANNIVERSARY Memorable Moments From 75th End of War Commemoration Events

On September 2, 2020, the United States commemorated the end of World War II on the decks of the Battleship Missouri, where 75 years ago, the Instrument of Surrender was signed as the world watched.

his year, tens of millions of people around the world watched, socially distanced, as we honored the veterans of World War II-- their actions, sacrifices, and lives. We were originally expecting thousands to join us in person from around the world, including 65 American World War II veterans, some who were on ships or in the air above Tokyo Bay on that day. Instead, due to COVID-19 concerns and restrictions, we welcomed 12 local veterans to the Missouri. To a man, they arrived with their family members, walking slowly and proudly through the cordon of American flags and up to the fantail of the Battleship Missouri to their specially assigned seats, escorted by the four-star Component Commanders from each of the services. As the Legacy of Peace aerial parade World War II Warbirds zoomed by, memories flashed and words tumbled out, as they recalled these planes from their war, and were amazed the planes were flying that day to honor them. As the colors paraded, and the National Anthem played, these War heroes stood a little taller, a little straighter, and saluted a symbol of this country they had fought for, and so many of their fellow Americans had died for. As the warship, USS Michael Murphy rendered honors to these veterans with a huge

American flag flying, and all hands topside saluting, there was a moment when the burden of protecting this country seemed to pass from the World War II veterans to this new generation of Americans. The Keynote Speaker, Secretary of Defense Esper reminded us, this was an important day to our country, to honor the service and the lives of these “Greatest Generation” World War II veterans.

Upon the conclusion of the ceremony, the veterans retired to the ship’s Wardroom, while Secretary Esper met via video conference with the mainland veterans that had planned to travel to Hawaii for the ceremony, from the Captain’s cabin.

They had congregated in six different sites on the mainland to be able to talk with Secretary Esper, relaying their thoughts and asking him questions. There were touching moments such as when one veteran who was so looking forward to coming to Hawaii relayed his daily exercise routine of standing and walking to prepare for the big moment on board the USS Missouri. To wrap up their meeting, Musician First Class Robert Wheeler, Jr., originally from San Diego, CA, and now living in Ohio, who had taken part in the original ceremony in 1945 on the Missouri providing entertainment as

part of a small band requested by ADM Halsey, pulled out his clarinet, 75 years later, and played “God Bless America,” for the Secretary of Defense, for his World War II shipmates, and to honor his country.

The local veterans, Secretary Esper and the Component Commanders came together on the fantail for a catered box lunch of local food and to talk story. No more than 5 to a table, each veteran had an opportunity to meet the current leadership of our Pacific Armed Forces and other VIPs. MGEN Darryll Wong, USAF (ret), one of the co-chairmen of the Commemoration Committee, was impressed when World War II veteran Marine Corporal Ted Richardson, originally of Scranton, Pennsylvania, now living here in Honolulu, opened lunch at their table by reciting a blessing for the food in fluent Hawaiian. It was the perfect story of an east coast World War II veteran, now living in, and a part of the Hawaii Ohana, 75 years after the war ended, sharing a meal with those of the next generation that he and those of his generation fought and sacrificed for. These were the World War II veterans, whose service and sacrifices we remembered and honored on 2 September.

n September 2, 2020, I was honored to have been invited to fly aboard a PBY, one of two historic World War II seaplanes that were flown by both the U.S. Navy and the U.S Army Air Corps. It was a breathtaking ride that took us from Wheeler Air Force Base, over Pearl Harbor and the USS Arizona Memorial, and the USS Missouri, book casing the beginning and end of World War II. To be in the air while the ceremony commemorating the end of World War II was going on below us, including the presence of local World War II veterans, was so meaningful.

But for me, this ride was even more special. My father, Milton Rabinowitz, who passed away at age 96 in 2019, was a Flight Engineer with the 4th Emergency Rescue Squad (ERS) of the Army Air Corps during the war. He did this while his brother George, headed off to Europe

to fight in both the Battle of the Bulge and, as we found out years later, during “D-Day” at Normandy, all while leaving their mother, who had lost her husband, alone wondering if her sons would ever return home.

The 4th ERS was based in the South Pacific, flying mission after mission, landing their PBY in the ocean and rescuing pilots and others who had been shot down. They described their missions, often staying in the air for close to 24 hours at a time, as hours of boredom followed by moments of sheer terror. It was noisy and often bumpy, but they loved each other and they so dearly loved their PBY. Following the war, my father, like so many veterans of the Greatest Generation, never talked much about his experiences, and instead focused on marrying, starting his family and his delayed career as a municipal engineer back in New Jersey.

Years later, as I reached my teenage years, my father rekindled his connection with his PBY buddies who started an association that resulted in yearly reunions in various cities. Having attended some of these, I was so touched again by their love of each other and their love of the PBY. I grew up understanding just how special the PBY was to each of these men, and just how important and adaptable it was to both the Army and the Navy.

My father and I visited Honolulu many years ago and searched in local museums to see if we could find a remaining PBY, only to learn that while Honolulu was a major base for PBY’s during the war, that none remained.

So here I was in 2020, now a resident of Honolulu, and so delighted to learn that two private owners went to all the trouble to bring their restored PBY’s to Honolulu for the end of World War II commemoration.

When they flew around the island, I was sure to be ready to see it in the air. And with great thanks to my friend and colleague, Mr. Ed Hawkins, I was honored to have had a seat that day onboard, something in my wildest imagination I could not have envisioned.

It was a true honor and tribute to my father and all of his buddies, to have flown on that special day, over that special place, on the PBY.

WHAT HIGH SCHOOL TEXTBOOKS

DON’T TEACH

High school textbooks teach that the atom bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki were flown to Japan by B-29 Superfortresses based on Tinian in the Mariana Islands. They do not recognize that the bombs were actually assembled on Tinian under combat conditions, not at the Los Alamos Laboratory in New Mexico.

n January 19, 1945, Dr. J. Robert Oppenheimer, Director of the Los Alamos Laboratory, advised Maj. Gen. Leslie Groves, Commanding General, Manhattan Project, on the status of the atom bombs. Oppenheimer’s very brief note only stated, “Aug. 1 for L.B [Little Boy] and 1- F. M. [Fat Man]; Sept. for 2 or 3 F.M.; October for 3 F. M…” Based on that prediction, General Groves sent Commander Fred Ashworth, USN, to the Marianas in early February to pick a site for the assembly and delivery of the bombs.

He chose Tinian because it was 100 miles closer to Japan than Guam, and Saipan was overcrowded with the 73rd Bombardment Wing, already flying missions to Japan.

Thus, Tinian became “Papacy.”

Meanwhile, Captain William Stirling “Deke” Parsons, USN, an ordnance specialist, assumed the position of Deputy Director, Los Alamos Laboratory. His job was to design a bomb mechanism incorporating all the gadgets the scientists had created, one that could be dropped from an airplane. Having created a proximity fuse for the Navy’s 5” antiaircraft guns and tested it in combat in the Southwest Pacific Area, Parsons knew what had to be done to move the Project to the front, successfully. Besides planning the deployment, he also oversaw the manufacture of bomb parts at various factories across America and coordinated shipments to a central packaging warehouse in San Francisco Bay.

Groves then sent his colleague in the Army Corps of Engineers, Colonel Elmer E. Kirkpatrick, Jr. to Tinian to oversee the construction of the necessary Manhattan Project facilities; an ordnance area with technical labs for subassemblies, three bomb assembly buildings, and two bomb loading pits, without telling anyone in the Marianas why, except Nimitz. Why three assembly buildings?

Commander Ashworth and four men from the Project Alberta assembly teams arrived on Tinian on June 27 and began organizing the bomb parts that had already arrived in Quonset Huts in the 1st Ordnance technical area. There were enough to make fifty bombs, some of which would be used to make final test drops just off Tinian’s northwest coast. Why fifty?

Three atom bomb assembly buildings had been completed. Little Boy test bombs and

the active bomb would be assembled in building number one. Fat Man would be assembled in number three, the furthest north.

After Little Boy was dropped on August 6, Assembly Building #1 was cleaned and restructured to handle the far different Fat Man bombs. After Fat Man was dropped on August 9, work immediately began on another. On the 12th, Truman decided no more bombs would be dropped without his signed order. General Carl Spaatz, Commander, U.S. Strategic Air Forces in the Pacific, and now stationed at Guam, recommended the next bomb be dropped in the burnt out section of Tokyo, so that Hirohito and his military clique could watch the show from the Palace.

Fortunately, on August 10 Hirohito took command and ordered acceptance of the Potsdam Ultimatum, unconditional surrender, with the retention of Japan’s traditional imperial system, kokutai, his only request.

Had Japan not surrendered, would there have been a third bomb, a fourth, a fifth, as many as necessary? No-one will ever know.

The Challenge of

MUSEUM STORYTELLING By: Scott Pawlowski, Pearl Harbor National Memorial

C

ollecting artifacts, photographs, letters, diaries and oral histories for museums is a long process. It takes years to acquire enough materials that an entire story can be told through objects, voices and writing. That is, a story which fairly represents what happened from multiple perspectives. This is a lot to accomplish as Pearl Harbor National Memorial (PHNM) grows into its responsibilities under the Dingell Act to talk about the Pacific War. Accounting for the size of the Pacific theater, the number of battles that transpired, the millions of people impacted and how many countries participated across the Pacific will take quite a long time and substantial investments in finances to acquire a meaningful number of objects to adequately tell and illustrate the story.

Take just one example, Midway Atoll. Unfortunately, PHNM’s museum collection only holds slightly more than 100 items from this pivotal battle in 1942. They date predictably from the timeframe of 1939-1942. Here are a couple of interesting items including a preview of our newest donation covering Midway in 1943. They illustrate how over time; museums build collections to tell a more thorough story.

THE BATTLE OF MIDWAY JUNE 4-6, 1942 As tensions with the Japanese rose, Midway was deemed second only to Pearl Harbor in importance to the protection of the Pacific West Coast.

In June of 1942, the now famous defeat of the Japanese efforts to take Midway would prove this perspective right.

But Midway did not just appear in the world in 1941 or 1942. The atoll has a military history dating back to 1867 when representatives from the USS Lackawanna formally took possession of the atoll for the United States and started administering it by the United States Navy.

Due to the deteriorating situation with Japan in the Pacific in 1940, the U.S. Navy stepped up the development of Midway. The first Marines of the 3rd Defense Battalion arrived at Midway on September 26, 1940. As war with Japan seemed closer, more men, aircraft and materials flowed into

Midway. On the evening of December 7, 1941, Midway was shelled by destroyers of the Imperial Japanese Navy with some damage and casualties sustained.

But on May 5, 1942, the Navy Section of Imperial General Headquarters ordered ADM Yamamoto to carry out operations to capture Midway and islands in the Aleutians and things got interesting.

United States cryptanalysts headed

by LCDR Joseph J. Rochefort at Pearl Harbor deciphered Japanese coded messages indicating the Japanese were next poised to attack a target designated as “AF”, which he felt was Midway. After some brilliant intelligence work, Rochefort confirmed Midway was the target.

The battle commenced June 4, 1942 with a PBY patrol bomber from Midway torpedoing the Japanese fleet tanker Akebono Maru. Japanese aircraft from carriers Akagi, Kaga, Soryu and Hiryu soon bombed installations on Midway and the battle was on! Before the Japanese withdrew from the fight both sides lost vital ships, aircraft and personnel.

Ending on June 6, 1942, the Battle of Midway was one of the most decisive battles in history, and the turning point of the war in the Pacific. For many days after the battle the search went on for downed U.S. aviators, those brave souls who turned the tide in the favor of U.S. forces in the Pacific.

The island’s importance continued to play out for the rest of the war and into the second half of the 20th century as a base for aircraft, submarines and ships.

AND THE SAGA OF THE PAN AM CLIPPER

aptain Bob Ford arrived early to work on December 1, 1941.

He was an employee at the Pan Am base located on Treasure Island, San Francisco. Ford was a veteran pilot and was considered one of the company’s best aviators. Within a week his skills would truly be tested. Like most Americans he and his crew were aware of the deterioration of relations with Japan. It was in the newspapers and on the radio.

The Pan Am Clipper had recently carried Special Envoy Saburo Kurusu from Japan to San Francisco in early November of 1941. From there he flew on to Washington DC via American Airlines to assist in negotiations with the United States.

The aircraft that Pan Am flew in 1941 was an incredible aeronautical achievement.

The California Clipper was a 100 ft long and with a wingspan of over 150 ft, the Boeing 314 was one of the largest seaplanes ever

to fly. It carried up to 74 passengers and was sustained by a crew of 11. The aircraft had enough range to fly all of the long legs required to island hop from San Francisco to Auckland New Zealand or the Orient.

The Clipper piloted by Ford was airborne and headed for Los Angeles on its first leg of its journey to Auckland. Pan American had built a huge network across the Pacific of refueling stations and bases located on islands and atolls.

The California Clipper Pan Am flight 18602 on December 2, 1941 took to the sky that afternoon and headed towards Pearl Harbor. At that same time, the Japanese carrier force known as “Kido Butai” was refueling at sea and now less than 900 miles away and turning toward Hawaii.

The California Clipper arrived and landed on the morning of December 3 near the Pearl City peninsula at Pearl Harbor. It had completed the longest leg of its outbound across the Pacific.

It was said that Oahu was a popular stopover spot with the Clipper crew and passengers. The island was alive with a variety of activities and relaxation. The afternoon of December 4, those going across the Pacific boarded the plane that would take them to New Zealand.

It was now December 7, the California Clipper left Pearl Harbor three days before.

The plane was now on the final leg of its journey to Auckland, having stopped off as planned at Canton Island, Fiji, and New Caledonia.

Radioman Leach was listening for local signals coming out of Auckland when he’d picked up the news. His reaction was explosive “The Japs have attacked Pearl Harbor!” an expression of dismay swept across his face. In the attempt to confirm it a new message was received…

PEARL HARBOR ATTACKED. IMPLEMENT PLAN A.

Leach was already attempting to do exactly that and soon he had managed to lock onto the long-range signal from the Pan Am ground station at Noumea, New Caledonia, from whence they had just departed.

The station was broadcasting morse code on a constant loop, itself a bad sign, and the translation left no room for doubt.

PEARL HARBOR ATTACKED. IMPLEMENT PLAN A. “For a moment there was silence on the flight deck. Then Ford reached into his jacket pocket, pulling out a sealed brown envelope, breaking the spell. He was the only member of the crew to whom the last part of the coded message made any sense.

It meant it was time to break open the envelopes that he, and every other Clipper Captain, had been secretly issued on every flight for a number of weeks now — since Pan Am decided to prepare for a war.” John Bull, author.

Captain Ford paused for a moment and read his secret orders.

Pan American Airways, in cooperation with the Chief of Staff, United States Army, Commander-in-Chief, Pacific Fleet Operations, the Secretary of War and the Secretary of State, has agreed to place its fleet of flying boats at the disposal of the military for whatever logistical or tactical purpose they may deem necessary at such time as hostilities break out between the United

For Ford, a former Navy pilot sensed the danger out there and decided to fly on to Auckland and avoid the Japanese at all costs. To achieve that, he took these measures…

1 - Shut down the radio, maintain radio silence.

2 - All lights extinguished 3 - Chart a new course to Auckland For the California Clipper, it was a matter of surviving in an environment that had gone from peace to war. Now they were cut off and a long way from the USA. Undeterred the California Clipper refitted and refueled in New Zealand began the long journey home. Winging their way west they flew on to Indonesia, India, Bahrain, Africa (Khartoum, Leopoldville), South America, Trinidad, San Juan Puerto Rico, New York and finally San Francisco. They had flown around the world to get home to the United States.

It had taken 31 days to get back to the States. They had flown over 31,500 miles with a flight time of 209 hours.

The California Clipper touched down on January 6, 1942 at 7:12 am and landed in the waters adjacent to the Marine Terminal at LaGuardia, just in the shadow of New York City. The nearly completed first commercial flight around the world was etched into the annals of Aviation History.

HONOR BESTOWED UPON A

Pearl Harbor Survivor

U

S Navy’s newest Arleigh-Burke class guided missile destroyer, named for the first Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy and Pearl Harbor Survivor, the Delbert D. Black entered service on Saturday, September 26, 2020. Black was on the USS Maryland on December 7, 1941, served aboard a variety of ships during his 30 years in the Navy, and eventually reached the highest possible enlisted rank during the Vietnam War. GMCM Black was the first Navy enlisted man awarded the Navy Distinguished Service Medal.

Secretary of the Navy Kenneth J. Braithwaite spoke of Black at the commissioning ceremony.

“Master Chief Black fought for increased sea-pay, family support programs, expanded uniform guidance and a host of other issues that improved the quality of life of not only junior enlisted, but all sailors and officers. By making life better for sailors, he made our Navy stronger for us all.”

The Hawai’i Council for the Humanities has awarded Pacific Historic Parks a $15,000 CARES Act Grant.

The funds were used to help retrofit PHP facilities to make them safer in this global age of social distancing triggered by COVID-19.

“As one of the many non-profits struggling in the wake of this pandemic, we sincerely appreciate the grant awarded by HiHumanities,” said Aileen Utterdyke, President and CEO of Pacific Historic Parks.

As part of the $2.2 trillion CARES Act, the National Endowment for the Humanities distributed $30 million in emergency aid for local humanities organizations.

The Hawaii Council for the Humanities received $465,700 to distribute locally.

A total of 38 organizations were awarded grants. More information can be found at hihumanities.org.
