Why we remember Welcome to the second annual combined 70th Anniversary Pearl Harbor Day Commemoration program and Pacific Historic Parks (PHP) member magazine, Remembrance. PHP is the non-profit cooperating association supporting National Park Service programs in the Pacific region through sales of interpretive materials sold at our bookstores. We exist to perpetuate and to expand the understanding and appreciation of the events, and especially the people, of the War in the Pacific. We hope the events of this December inspire you to learn more about history and about how that history has shaped the world we live in today.

Mike Wenger is an author and Pearl Harbor historian who has written a number of books on the December 7, 1941 attack and is currently collaborating with Robert Cressman and John DiVirgilio on a twelve-volume Pearl Harbor magnum opus that is being published by Pacific Historic Parks. The first volume, Steady Nerves and Stout Hearts: The USS Enterprise Air Group and Pearl Harbor, came out earlier this year and is available at the bookstore and online. In his spare time, Mike is on a special mission for PHP. He recently sent a CD to this office with the fruits of his nearly three-month labor neatly digitally packaged. Detailed on the CD were rosters and morning reports painstakingly scanned at the National Personnel Records Center in St. Louis, Missouri of the Hawaiian Air Force, circa November/December 1941.

While this information may seem to some like an arcane collection of inconsequential data, everyone here at the WWII Valor in the Pacific National Monument was excited at the prospect of finally acquiring a complete record of who served at the Army’s airfields on Oahu during the December 7, 1941 attack. One of the most-asked questions National Park Service rangers and PHP staff get concerns visitors’ relations and where they were during the attack. Usually the veteran kept silent about their WWII record and the family knows next-to nothing about their service. We are constantly frustrated that no such database exists.

The WWII generation fought, were often injured, and sometimes died, with no expectation that they were establishing any kind of historical legacy. More than a few men and women died anonymously; there are 355 USS Oklahoma sailors buried as unknowns at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific alone. But they figured history wasn’t their business. Their business was fighting, winning and coming home. A family, a lineage, free from the threats of an unstable world would be legacy enough.

As part of our new, closer association with the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association, we are also acquiring the original 25,000 applications to the national organization. Many of these applications hold the veteran’s personal Pearl Harbor experience, usually hand-written. This priceless information will give PHP an opportunity to assemble a large percentage of the Pearl Harbor stories that exist. We hope, in the future, to acquire more records, more rosters, more stories so as to give a complete record of all service men and women who were on Oahu during the December 7 attack. We do this not to exalt ourselves or the veterans. I think that is not what they would want. What they want is for us to remember a time of uncertainty; a time of menacing peril; a time of unreserved togetherness and unqualified triumph. They want us to remember so that we won’t have to go through what they went through. With these lists, these numbers, these stories, we can put a face to a record, we can put a story to an event, we can bring a family together in the knowledge of their personal history. The tragedies and triumphs of a generation await the mission we’ve humbly taken on. Let’s get to work.

The Marine Corps Service-Record Book of Cpl Walter E. Soboleski. Cpl Soboleski’s record over the years was somewhat uneven, but on December 7, 1941 he was assigned to the Marine Detachment at Kaneohe Bay. Under intense machine gun fire, he raised the American flag over the administration building.

Kama‘aina and Military Appreciation Day A day of special band performances, hula halaus, and historical displays, all in honor of Hawai‘i’s kama‘aina and military families. Also, a limited block of USS Arizona Memorial tour tickets will be reserved for kama‘aina and retired and active military, available on a first-come, first-served basis with Hawai‘i or military ID. Narrated Historic Pearl Harbor Boat Tours Visitors take a rare opportunity to tour Pearl Harbor as National Park Service Rangers describe the history and current state of one of the world’s most historic bodies of water. USS Utah Commemoration Ceremony and Interment Pearl Harbor Survivors, military personnel and their families and friends will attend an interment burial service for USS Utah Survivor Lee Soucy at the USS Utah Memorial on Ford Island. National Park Service and US Navy divers will lower Mr. Soucy’s remains into the sunken ship, followed by full military honors.

Pearl Harbor 70th Anniversary Commemoration The National Park Service and Navy Region Hawai‘i host the 70th Anniversary Pearl Harbor Day Commemoration from 7:45 am to 9:30 am on the backlawn of the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center. 3000 people are expected to join Pearl Harbor Survivors, WWII veterans, and distinguished speakers and guests for the annual observance of the 1941 attack on Oahu.

70th Remembrance Ceremony - Hickam Field A 7:55 am ceremony to be held at the Base Flag Pole at Atterbury Memorial Park, Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam. The ceremony commemorates the December 7, 1941 Japanese attack on what was then US Army Air Corps’ Hickam Field.

USS Oklahoma Memorial Marker Ceremony Those dedicated individuals responsible for the USS Oklahoma Memorial on Ford Island will be dedicating a Memorial Marker at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific (Punchbowl) at 10:30 am. The rose granite memorial marker will commemorate and honor the memory of the approximately 335 USS Oklahoma interred at the cemetery known only as “USS Oklahoma Unknowns.”

USS Oklahoma Memorial Commemoration A special ceremony from 1:30 pm to 2:30 pm hosted by the National Park Service in honor of those who served on the USS Oklahoma during the attack on Pearl Harbor. The Battleship Oklahoma was berthed along Ford Island on December 7, 1941, and suffered the second greatest loss of life during the attack. The Memorial is located next to the Battleship Missouri and is accessed on December 7 by free shuttle busses departing every 15 minutes from the USS Bowfin Submarine Museum & Park.

1st Annual Pearl Harbor Memorial Parade Join marching bands, dignitaries, military groups and officials saluting veterans of Pearl Harbor and WWII and commemorating the 70th Anniversary of the Pearl Harbor attack. his year will mark the 70th Anniversary of America’s entry into the largest, most influential war in human history. The historical landscape that permeates the island of Oahu gives us clues and memories of America’s WWII past. Each December 7th the National Park Service has hosted a commemorative service to honor the memory of those who served and those who gave their last full measure of devotion. This year’s Keynote Speaker, Mr. Mal Middlesworth, was 18 years old and a member of the Marine Detachment aboard the heavy cruiser, USS San Francisco, tied up in the shipyard at Pearl Harbor on that fateful Sunday. He recalled, “As I opened the hatch I saw a Japanese torpedo plane about 30 feet away heading for Battleship Row. The machine gunner in the rear of the plane was spraying bullets on the fantail as I headed toward and realized this was no practice. On that day in history I was where I exactly wanted to be. This is why I joined the Marines.” As a nation we stand shoulder to shoulder with that diminishing fraternity of WWII veterans. We now are witnessing the passing of a generation that fought WWII on the battle front and the home front. They have left us a legacy that will endure as long as America exists. Perhaps it is that enduring legacy of World War II that has now become part of the pageant of American history.

As for World War II we didn’t do it alone. The United States accomplished victory over the Axis powers with a coalition of nations that had similar dreams of freedom without the yoke of Nazism, Fascism and Militarism. But r e m e m b r a n c e

how do we honor those who stood against the rising tide of a war that nearly crushed the aspirations of free men? What are the appropriate memorials? How do we keep their meaning as the generation that created them fades into history? Or will they fall prey to the faint memory of just a few?

Beginning in May of 1962, the US Navy administered the USS Arizona Memorial.

The transition to the National Park Service stewardship began in 1980. The mission of the National Park Service is “to conserve the scenery and the natural and historic objects…and to provide for the enjoyment of the same in such manner and by such means as will leave them unimpaired for the enjoyment of future generations’. Here at Pearl Harbor, the USS Arizona Memorial became the first WWII battle site to be administered by the National Park Service. Since then, a number of WWII parks have been established.

Among them are the War in the Pacific National Historical Park in Guam, American Memorial Park in Saipan, Manzanar National Historic Site, Port Chicago Naval Magazine National Memorial and Rosie the Riveter/WWII Home Front National Historic Park in California as well as the National WWII Memorial in Washington DC. In 2007 a new acquisition for the National Park Service was the USS Oklahoma Memorial.

Mandated by Congress, this memorial is dedicated to the fallen crew of 429 men and its survivors. The Oklahoma represents the second greatest loss of life among the ships struck that day at Pearl Harbor. Only the USS Arizona suffered more…it lost 1,177 sailors, officers and Marines.

In honoring the past, we look to the future. In order to honor the memory, we are devoted to keeping alive “The Enduring Legacy” of the greatest generation. The National Park Service, in partnership with Pacific Historic Parks, its nonprofit cooperating association, is committed to that legacy with the building of a $56 million visitor center and museum complex in 2010.

Driving interpretive mission was the idea that new opportunities would be provided to visitors wanting to attain broader understanding of history through the use of mulr e m e m b r a n c e

tiple perspectives on the attack on Pearl Harbor, the Pacific War and the sacrifices made by those caught up in the vortex of war.

The new complex includes one central entry to visit all associated Pearl Harbor historic sites. It allows the visitor the opportunity to broaden their knowledge of WWII by tactile examples of warships, aircraft and relics that enhance the sensory experience of seeing and hearing the real thing. In the museum, oral history stations provide the unique experience of hearing the voices of those who experienced moments in WWII history. Thus, in preserving that memory we honor the WWII veterans by allowing their voices to be shared and heard. The Pearl Harbor Visitor Center complex stretches over an expansive landscape that includes central ticketing services, a threegallery museum, education center and twin theaters that house digital projection and a

state of the art sound system. The new bookstore operated by the association provides the finest collection of books and interpretive materials on the War in the Pacific.

While these physical changes to the site were being made the administration of the NPS site at Pearl Harbor changed, too. In the fading days of the George W. Bush administration, a presidential proclamation established nine new federal historic properties in the West, among them the USS Utah and USS Oklahoma Memorials in Hawai‘i; the battlefield on Attu, Japanese occupation site on Kiska Island, and the B-24D Liberator crash site on Atka Island in Alaska, and the JapaneseAmerican interment site at Tule Lake Segregation Center in northern California.

The proclamation also changed the title

of the site of the USS Arizona Memorial to WWII Valor in the Pacific National Monument. New themes now embrace this monument and broaden its historical interpretation. “From engagement to peace” and “Oahu as battlefield” are new interpretive statements that play a key role in driving the mission at the new Pearl Harbor Visitor Center.

A new entity, the Pearl Harbor Historic Sites, with the National Park Service as the lead, has now formed as a coalition of museums under the banners of the USS Bowfin Submarine Museum and Park, Battleship Missouri Memorial and the Pacific Aviation Museum. The individual offerings of these distinctive repositories of history that can be found along the shoreline of Pearl Harbor and on Ford Island bring new focus to the Pacific War experience. .

But preserving and interpreting these places of such historic interest is not an easy task and clearly the challenges are ever present.

In his much acclaimed book, Sacred Ground: Americans and Their Battlefields, Dr. Edward Linenthal notes… “…[T]hey are ceremonial centers where various forms of venerations reflect the belief that the contemporary power and relevance of the “lessons” of the battle are crucial for the continued life of the nation.

Furthermore, many people believe that the patriotic inspiration to be extracted from these sacred places depends not only on the proper ceremony but on a memorialized, preserved, restored, and purified environment. These sites are civil places where Americans of various ideological persuasions come, not always reverently, to compete for the ownership of powerful national stories and to argue about the nature of heroism, the meaning of war, the efficacy of martial sacrifice, and the national significance of preserving the patriotic landscape of a nation.” So today as you attend this joint service of the National Park Service and the United States Navy on 7 December 2011, keep in mind that this place and its waters are sacred to those who come to honor the memory at this ceremonial center.

On this December 7th - the 70th anniversary of one of most shocking and formative days in our history - we come to honor the past and build toward the future.

We do this to keep our sacred commitment to those whose WWII legacy is the freedom we enjoy today.

F eatured S peakerS LesLie WiLcox– President and ceo, PBs HaWai‘i Leslie Wilcox took the helm of PBs Hawai‘i as President and ceo in March 2007, after a long and varied career in Hawai‘i’s broadcast and print news media. she's committed to "breaking the glass" of the tv monitor to engage with people in all of our communities, including online. raised in Hawai‘i, Ms. Wilcox has reported for the Honolulu star-Bulletin, anchored two of the island’s popular newscasts, and now leads its only public television station. taking over in budget-constrained 2007, Ms. Wilcox has lead PBs Hawai‘i into the new decade with a strong commitment to showcasing all that Hawai‘i’s divergent cultures have to offer. she is currently the driving force behind a student-run, statewide newscast, the first of its kind in the nation.

Ken saLazar – secretary oF tHe interior Ken salazar, a fifth-generation coloradan, was confirmed as the 50th secretary of the u.s. department of the interior on Jan. 20, 2009, in a unanimous vote by the u.s. senate.

Prior to his confirmation, secretary salazar served as colorado's 35th u.s. senator, winning election in november 2004 and serving on the Finance committee, which oversees the nation's tax, trade, social-security, and health-care systems. He also served on the agriculture, energy and natural resources, ethics, veterans affairs and aging committees.

He has worked to help veterans in rural communities get better access to health care by creating the office of rural Health in the department of veterans affairs and by pressing that agency to open new rural outreach clinics in colorado. He also exercised a leadership role in championing a new defense and foreign policy that restores american security and influence around the world.

ray MaBus – secretary oF tHe navy ray Mabus is the 75th united states secretary of the navy. as secretary, he leads america's navy and Marine corps and is responsible for an annual budget in excess of $150 billion and almost 900,000 people. the secretary of the navy is responsible for conducting all the affairs of the department of the navy, including recruiting, organizing, supplying, equipping, training, and mobilizing. additionally, he oversees the construction, outfitting, and repair of naval ships, equipment and facilities, and is responsible for the formulation and implementation of policies and programs that are consistent with the national security policies and objectives established by the President and the secretary of defense.

Prior to joining the administration of President Barack obama, secretary Mabus served in a variety of top posts in government and the private sector. in 1988, Mabus was elected the youngest governor of Mississippi in more than 100 years, stressing education and job creation throughout his tenure.

MaL MiddLesWortH – PearL HarBor survivor Middlesworth joined the united states Marine corps april 13, 1941 in chicago, illinois.

Graduating from Boot camp at the usMc recruit depot, san diego, ca June, 1941, Middlesworth joined Marine detachment, uss San Francisco (ca-38) in Pearl Harbor october 2, 1941. during the december 7, 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor, the San Francisco was undergoing overhaul, and though the ship was largely dismantled, her crew actively participated in anti-aircraft gunfire against enemy aircraft. Many other Pacific War battles followed; including Wake island/Midway, the samoa, Gilbert and Marshalls raids and the February 1942 raids on new Guinea with uss Lexington.

Middlesworth participated in the october/november 1942 Guadalcanal landings, the capture and defense of Guadalcanal, cape esperance (second savo), and Guadalcanal (third savo), where his ship sustained heavy damage. Middlesworth was wounded and was awarded the Purple Heart by admiral Bull Halsey.

Middlesworth proudly and ably served as vice-President and national President of the Pearl Harbor survivors association from december 7, 2004 to december 31, 2011. He has edited and published the Pearl Harbor Gram, the quarterly newsletter of the national Pearl Harbor survivors association, since January 1, 2001.

USS Oklahoma Memorial on Ford Island

(Located Near the Battleship Missouri Memorial)

T

he public is invited to attend a special ceremony hosted by the National Park Service in honor of those who served on the USS Oklahoma during the attack on Pearl Harbor. The USS Oklahoma (BB-37) Memorial was officially dedicated on December 7, 2007. The Memorial is located on Ford Island, near Fox-5 Pier next to the Battleship Missouri Memorial. The Battleship Oklahoma was berthed along Ford Island on December 7, 1941 and suffered the second greatest loss of life during the attack. The Memorial includes 429 marble columns symbolizing each of the crewmembers who lost their lives on that fateful day.

Public wishing to attend the ceremony may catch a free shuttle departing every 15 minutes from the USS Bowfin Submarine Museum & Park which is adjacent to the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center. Those with military identification may drive directly to the USS Oklahoma Memorial.

Escape and Rescue

T

he Oklahoma capsized at 8:08 a.m. approximately 12 minutes after the first torpedo hit. Hundreds of men were trapped below her decks.

They found themselves in a bizarre world turned upside down, in pitch-black darkness, as compartments filled with water. Death came to 429 officers, sailors and Marines, marking the second greatest loss of life at Pearl Harbor. But not all were lost. Some men waited in compartments for rescue, while others began thinking of ways to escape their watery tomb.

Of the 14 men trapped in D-57, three made a daring escape. They swam nearly 20 feet down the trunk space, 35 feet out of the hatch and across the upside down deck, and finally ascended almost 30 feet to the water’s surface. Ordinary men with extraordinary courage swam approximately 90 feet to freedom. Over the next two days, 32 men would be pulled alive from the hull of the Oklahoma. Eleven came from D-57, a storage compartment known as the “Lucky Bag.”

s we commemorate the 70th Anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor, we realize that while memories may fade and wounds are healed over time, now more than ever, it is important to preserve our nation’s history and honor the individuals who shaped it.

Built to honor the sacrifices made on December 7, 1941, the USS Arizona Memorial has become an international symbol of our nation’s desire to remember.

ommel Delfino, one of our newest PHP Volunteers, answered our call for help and joined our team in May. Choosing to volunteer for personal development— public speaking and confidence building— Rommel did not want to fall into a trap, feeling sorry for himself in these tough economic times. He said, “The Greatest Generation, after all, had it much tougher. Volunteering is a great way of finding a sense of purpose in life, great or small.”

Rommel spends his Sundays at the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center communicating with visitors about the significance of the Memorial. “I enjoy connecting with people through a simple smile, a greeting, talking story and collecting donations [for the USS Arizona Memorial]. There are notable moments, for example, on one slow Sunday, I saw a little boy tip toeing up to the counter to drop his coins in the small scale model of the Arizona Memorial. That was a moment that boosted my motivation. Sometimes visitors want to know my name and shake my hand. And that’s when I realize I am making a difference.”

n Tuesday, December 6, 2011, Pearl Harbor Survivors, military personnel, families and friends attended an interment burial service for USS Utah Survivor, Lee Soucy, at the USS Utah Memorial on Ford Island.

His cremated remains Lee Soucy were lowered inside the Oct. 30, 1919 - Jan. 7, 2010 ship by National Park Service and U.S. Navy divers, followed by full military honors.

The interment ceremonies offered by the National Park Service and U.S. Navy divers are marked by formal military etiquette. While descending into the water together, the urn is held up so that it is the very last thing that the family views... a last moment to say goodbye. Then the urn is placed in a specific protected area. The divers feel a special responsibility during the moving ceremony and they feel honored to be able to reunite shipmates.

Dear friends, My name is Everett Hyland and I am a Pearl Harbor Survivor of the USS Pennsylvania. The Empire of Japan attacked my ship but I have never held anything against the individual Japanese pilots that bombed us that December 7, 70 years ago. They were doing what they had been told to do, just as we Americans did and would do for the remainder of the war.

Recently, I have been involved with the Teachers Workshops that the National Park Service and Pacific Historic Parks sponsor. These workshops bring teachers from all over the United States to Hawai‘i to learn the newest scholarship on Pearl Harbor. To put it simply, they are taught how to teach Pearl Harbor history. The program has been a tremendous success, and the past few years teachers from other countries have participated: China, Japan, Australia, Indonesia, and others. I was a teacher myself after I got out of the Navy, and I understand the importance of cross-cultural dialogue. We learn from them and they learn from us and hopefully the world gets a little closer together and war gets a little less likely.

To my mind, that’s what the USS Arizona Memorial and this fancy new Visitor Center do. They bring different people, from all over the world, together in an atmosphere of humility and reverence. Wherever you’re from, you can’t come to this Memorial and not feel sad about the lives that were cut short that day, and the succeeding days of that terrible war. I myself lost a brother at Iwo Jima and I feel that loss every day.

What the people who raise money here are asking is that you donate to help restore and renovate this Memorial. It’s been 50 years of visitors, salt air, and Pearl Harbor water.

Pearl Harbor Visitor Center to debut new Blu-Ray video Tora! Tora! Tora!

With the recent remodel of the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center theaters, courtesy of Sony, state-of-the-art projection and sound were installed to take advantage of the restored and digitized orientation movie. These upgrades in equipment will meet the expectations of audiences growing more and more used to digital projection and HD quality movies.

Base Flag Pole Atterbury Memorial Park Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam The 15th Wing will be hosting the 70th annual Dec. 7th Commemorative Ceremony on Dec. 7, 2011 at the Atterbury Circle flag pole on Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Hawaii. Attendees need to be in place no later than 7:15 a.m.

The ceremony is open to all military identification card holders, veterans, survivors of the attack, and guests of attending survivors. Base access required.

On Sunday morning, 7 December 1941, the largest airborne attack force ever assembled by the Imperial Japanese Navy struck Oahu’s military installations and plunged the United States into World War II. Their main objective was to cripple the U.S. Fleet anchored at Pearl Harbor. To eliminate air opposition, however, they needed to destroy the Hawaiian Air Force; so they struck Hickam, Wheeler and Bellows Fields with devastating fury.

The first air installation hit was Wheeler Field. Shortly thereafter, a flight of some 50 dive-bombers and fighters struck Hickam Field. With the large population of Japanese in the local community, sabotage had been feared more than an enemy attack; so instead of being dispersed and in readiness for immediate takeoff, the aircraft were bunched together in one place where they could be closely guarded. They were easy targets for the Japanese, whose attack then widened to include the big new consolidated barracks and mess hall, the base theater (which was also used as a chapel), the post exchange, enlisted men’s beer garden, and the fire station and guardhouse.

In all, 189 men died at Hickam Field that day, and 303 were wounded.

The Japanese attacked without warning, and the results were devastating; but even in this defeat, heroism abounded. The history of the day tells many stories of men who risked and often sacrificed their lives in an attempt to fight back.

The attack on 7 December was by any assessment, a disastrous day.

Reminders of the attack are still visible on what was Hickam Field, where the tattered flag that flew over the base that day is encased and on display in the lobby of Hale Makai (“House by the Sea” in Hawaiian).

This former “Big Barracks” now serves as headquarters of the Pacific Air Forces, and its bullet-scarred walls are carefully preserved to serve as a constant reminder to never again be caught unprepared.

The Navy Club of the United States of America Honoring Service and Sacrifice for 73 years

On this 70th Anniversary of Pearl Harbor, Pacific Historic Parks and the National Park Service salute the Navy Club for its outstanding dedication to the memory of those lost at Pearl Harbor. The following is taken from the Navy Club’s administrative manual and outlines the Club’s pioneering efforts to memorialize the crew of the USS Arizona.

18 June 1938, at a Navy Veterans OnReunion in Quincy, Illinois, a new and

powerful organization, the Navy Club of the United States of America, was launched. On that day, a Constitution and By-Laws was adopted to govern the group, speaking the language of the men who go down to the sea in ships.

The original organizational committee drew up a broad administrative charter that envisioned a new concept in collectively bringing together the many private Navy Clubs and Navy Veteran Organizations that had sprung up across the country, and by so doing, give each member and prospective member, a powerful voice as a Nationally Recognized Organization. With the Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard men and women of the United States formed together in one powerful service organization, it was concluded that there should come a more extensive and widespread observance of NAVY DAY, now celebrated on the 13th of October each year, a watchful eye on all legislation and laws that concerns a strong United States Navy and National Defense, a guarantee that our Navy will always be kept at such strengths that there will be no more "Pearl Harbors", a more powerful influence on American thinking on the importance of a "First Class Navy", a better and more informed medium through which the Navy Department can convey its problems to all American citizens, and to join together all sailors, marines and Coast Guard personnel into a closer comradeship.

Since 1938, NCUSA has in spite of its small size nationally, accomplished many programs and projects. Perhaps the biggest highlight of all NCUSA's events took place in 1955. It was on December 7th of that year that eight members of the parent body dedicated the first memorial by any Veterans Organization in honor of all servicemen killed in the Pearl Harbor area in 1941. This monument was placed adjacent to the sunken battleship Arizona, on Ford Island, and consists of a large bronze plaque, measuring approximately three by five feet, placed on a bluestone lava rock weighing 27 tons, standing ten feet tall.

Compared to the memorials and monuments that would follow, the monument appears somewhat insignificant as it is tucked away in the Ford Island foliage in an area few can visit. Yet it caught the attention of Charles Thomas, then Secretary of the Navy, as he immediately asked the Navy Club’s Pearl Harbor Commission Chairman, Alton G. Meyer and other members of NCUSA, to please help the Navy Department and the Pacific War Memorial Commission in establishing a permanent memorial over the sunken battleship Arizona.

NCUSA responded to his request with the formation of an Arizona Memorial Commission, which in turn sponsored the first money raising fund drive through the sale of a small aluminum “Arizona Shrine Project” medallion. This project gave other veteran organizations and the Pacific War Memorial Commission the incentive to start their respective fund raising programs, which eventually resulted in the building of the present day USS Arizona Memorial. We are indeed proud of this accomplishment, as it is a fitting memorial in honor of the men still on board.

Commandant Charles R. Topp delivered a stirring speech at the dedication of the memorial, saying, in part, “Let us never forget this day and what this observation signifies. We are the custodians of a great heritage, of freedom and independence.

We must keep faith with those who fought and died to uphold it, who sacrificed to maintain it. How do we do this? By resolutely facing the unfinished problems that are connected and associated with what they fought to prevent. We can never deserve the honored and cherished title of Americans unless we assume our responsibilities as citizens.”

The Navy Club’s USS Arizona Monument appears inconspicuous and almost hidden on the shore of Ford Island, yet its influence looms large in the annals of Pearl Harbor remembrance. r e m e m b r a n c e

Protecting Pearl Harbor

P

rior to the 1800’s, Pearl Harbor was once a shallow embayment called Wai Momi (water of pearl) packed with pearlproducing oysters. This particular part of Oahu experienced lush lands, streams running down the Koolau Mountains, arid Ewa Plains and an abundance of birds. The arrival of Polynesians, Europeans, sugarcane plantations, U.S. military development and the December 7th, 1941 Japanese Navy attack on Pearl Harbor drastically changed the wildlife habitat conditions directly affecting the native bird and plant population.

Since then, this is what one region of Pearl Harbor has developed into. In 1972, during the time that naval facilities and urban development were flourishing, the Pearl Harbor National Wildlife Refuge (PHNWR) was established as mitigation for construction of the Honolulu International Airport’s reef runway. Inclusive to the PHNWR are two wetland units, the Wai‘awa Unit that covers 24.5 acres and Hono‘uli‘uli Unit that covers 36.5 acres. They are currently managed under a cooperative agreement with the U.S. Navy to provide wetland habitat for four of Hawaii’s endangered waterbirds: ae‘o (Hawaiian stilt), ‘alae ke‘oke‘o (Hawaiian coot), ‘alae ‘ula (Hawaiian moorhen) and koloa maoli (Hawaiian 2 0

duck). Both units are important wintering grounds for a variety of migratory waterbirds that come from as far away as 3,500 miles, and then return to their breeding grounds in other parts of the world. Although Hono‘uli‘uli unit was designed to protect waterbirds, many restoration efforts have contributed to native plant populations in these areas as well.

Tucked into the West Loch end of Pearl Harbor is the Hono‘uli‘uli Unit. Excited to be exploring this unit, I geared up my camera and met with Michael Silbernagle, Wildlife Biologist on Oahu for the National Wildlife Refuge Complex, who led a very informative tour. As we entered the gated area, it appeared to be like any regular uninhabited piece of land. However, as we drove around the thick brush, my senses were awakened by the sight and sound of native birds playing in the water and picking through the vegetation for a morning snack. Silbernagle explained that some of their unique habitats could help make it easier for me to distinguish one bird from the other. For example, the ‘alae ke‘oke‘o (Hawaiian coot) prefer open water that is less than 12” deep for foraging and nesting.

particular habitats also define how the unit is carefully designed to accommodate the different requirements for each species. With this in mind, the Pearl Harbor National Wildlife Refuge strives to meet these goals and objectives: • Protect and manage seasonal wetland habitats to meet the lifehistory needs of endangered waterbirds to promote their recovery and also for the benefit of migratory birds.

• Collect scientific information necessary to support adaptive management decisions • Provide interpretive and educational opportunities to enhance public understanding of and appreciation for the national and cultural resources of Pearl Harbor National Wildlife Refuge.

• Protect historic and cultural resources for the benefit of present and future generations.

It was very refreshing to see, that even though Pearl Harbor experienced destruction and devastation 70 years ago, PHNWR is doing its best to safeguard the precious habitats and also link our future generations to its environmental education through wetland ecology, native wildlife and cultural heritage. PHSA to shut down at end of year

While the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association, Inc. is shutting down operations on December 31, 2011, the Pearl Harbor Gram will continue to be published as part of the Pacific Historic Parks, Pearl Harbor Hawai‘i membership publication Remembrance. PHSA is turning over the Gram subscription list to the PHP publication staff, so if your subscription fee for the Pearl Harbor Gram is paid up through 2012, you will receive a copy of the Winter edition of Remembrance magazine sometime in December 2011.

This a great time to start receiving Remembrance magazine as the Winter edition is also the official program of the Pearl Harbor 70th Anniversary Commemoration ceremony held at the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center on December 7th, 2011. Gram material will not be included in the Remembrance Winter edition as PHSA will publish one more issue of the Gram.

The final Gram will be distributed sometime in the first quarter of the new year.

The release date of the final Gram depends on the date the final Pearl Harbor Survivors Association, Inc. independent auditors’ report is available to the Gram staff. The

financial audit will provide members with the Association’s final financial report as of December 31, 2011. The Minutes of the September PHSA Executive Board Meeting will also be included in the last Gram. This was the meeting at which the E-Board voted to close down as a corporate entity, turn in our Charter from Congress, and eliminate the chapter and national organization’s IRS obligations.

The response to the continuation of Gram information and Pearl Harbor Survivor stories has been very positive. We first told the Gram subscribers about Pacific Historic Park’s willingness to continue the GRAM as part of their excellent publication in the August, 2011 Gram. We again announced that the Pearl Harbor Gram would continue after the Association shut down in the November, 2011 issue.

Pearl Harbor Survivors Association, Inc. has not been accepting dues payments since the decision to shut down the organization on December 31, 2011. There are no dues requirements to receive the Remembrance publication. If you are not on the current Gram subscription list and want to receive Remembrance magazine the price for 4 quarterly issues is the same as the Gram— $6. a year for previous Gram subscribers.

Welcome members of the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association Pacific Historic Parks is honored and humbled to be being chosen by the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association to carry on their long tradition of remembrance. It won’t be easy to live up to the dedication and perseverance of the PHSA; the reality of their experience with the Pearl Harbor attack and the subsequent War in the Pacific, their collective memory of tragedy and ultimately, triumph, can never be reproduced. Our mission has always been to expand the understanding and appreciation of the War in the Pacific and the transfer of the PHSA’s assets will give PHP members and the public at large an incredibly rich collection of priceless materials and history.

Please be assured that we will do everything in our power to live up to the expectations, and trust, of the PHSA membership. While the somewhat separate nature of this first Remembrance/Gram will be replace by a more integrated whole, our dedication to remembering and honoring the men and women who fought WWII will never diminish. We exist to honor a generation, but the means to communicate that legacy just got immeasurably stronger.

In partnership with our Members, Pacific Historic Parks supports the interpretation and visitor service activities of the National Park Service, at four National Park sites throughout the Pacific, benefitting millions of park visitors and over 30,000 students annually.

At Pearl Harbor your Membership supports the interpretation of the events that took place during WWII in the Pacific, provides funding for the preservation of artifacts related to the history of Pearl Harbor, and funds education programs for our visitors, students and educators.

In Kalaupapa your Membership supports the preservation and protection of significant sites including renovation and maintenance of St. Damien’s own St. Philomena Church.

Your Membership designated to Saipan supports and funds educational programs, museum displays and exhibits in honor of the American and Marianas people who gave their lives during the Marianas Campaign of WWII. Your support in Guam funds educational and interpretive programs at the T. Stell Newman Visitor Center, commemorating the sacrifice and bravery of those who fought in the battles of the Pacific War Campaign.
