New name, same mission: engage, educate, inspire Here, in this American Memorial Park, a grateful nation honors and mourns its fallen sons in the WWII Battles for Saipan and Tinian and the Battle of the Philippine Sea. Their supreme sacrifice in the bright morning of their lives far from home contributed to the victory won and to the peace that followed. In solemn remembrance their names are here forever inscribed. These park grounds, the Court of Honor and the Flag Circle flying the service colors under which they bravely fought, are dedicated in humble tribute to their lasting memory.

There are memorials and monuments scattered throughout the Pacific. Some, like the above inscription on Saipan, tell stories of great World War II battles, with victories won at great cost. Some relate tragic stories of pain, loss, and isolation. What all of these stories have in common are individuals, often acting alone, who in decisive moments change history.

The Marine, charging a hill full of deadly defenses that would finally turn a battle into a rout; the soldier jumping on a live grenade to save the lives of his comrades,; the nurse braving the acrid air of frontline battle to aid the wounded and comfort the dying; the priest and nun living with disease and isolation and, through the gifts of charity and hope, making it into God’s country.

The Arizona Memorial Museum Association (AMMA) was formed as a non-profit cooperating association with the National Park Service in 1979 to support and to fund educational programs, museum displays and exhibits, and interpretive programs for the USS Arizona Memorial. Over the years, our involvement with the National Park Service has grown and today, we support four National Parks throughout the Pacific: World War II Valor in the Pacific National Monument at Pearl Harbor, War in the Pacific National Historical Park in Guam, American Memorial Park in Saipan and Kalaupapa National Historical Park on the island of Molokai. Our new name, Pacific Historic Parks, better reflects our scope of support with the National Park Service and our continuing efforts to engage the people of the beautiful, historic, and vital places we serve.

Pacific Historic Parks will continue to perpetuate the memory and appreciation of the events and people involved in these sites, and we will continue to support the National Park Service in the education, preservation, development and interpretation of World War II in the Pacific and other Pacific historic sites.

Our redesigned website www.pacifichistoricparks.org has launched and will evolve into what we hope will be an online portal for those with stories and photographs to share, a place to network with others of similar interests to meet and compare experiences, and an educational outlet for historic photographs, oral histories, and unique documents of all kinds.

All too often, visitors and local people in Kalaupapa, Saipan, and Guam wondered why the Arizona Memorial Museum Association cared about their island. Our name change reinforces our commitment to these sites, not only as special places that deserve wider appreciation for their histories, but as vital, growing, unique sites of current importance and relevance.

We hope that through this change, we can better communicate the idea that while the various parks we serve all have unique histories, their inspiring stories of sacrifice, courage, determination, and hope are universal. We look forward to the challenge of bringing new relevance to these sites, new meanings to their stories, and new generations of people who will cherish their shared history.

Located on saipan, the largest island in the U.S. Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, American Memorial Park honors the American and Marianas people who gave their lives during the Marianas Campaign of World War II. Over 6,000 names are inscribed in memorials at the park, including the Court of Honor, Flag Circle, and the Marinas Memorial.

Pacific Historic Parks operates a bookstore, supports and funds educational programs, museum displays and exhibits at the Visitor Center.

Located in the U.S. Territory of Guam, this significant park commemorates the sacrifice and bravery of those who fought in the battles of the Pacific War Campaign as well as the suffering of the native peoples of those islands. American troops landed on Agat and Asan beaches in July of 1944 to remove the Japanese who had occupied this U.S. possession since December of 1941. The park consists of seven different sites, each with a different story of the battle for Guam. It also encompasses over 1,000 acres of ocean preserve adjacent to the invasion beaches.

Located at Pearl Harbor on the island of Oahu, this National Monument includes the USS Arizona Memorial, USS Utah Memorial, USS Oklahoma Memorial and other significant WWII sites. The USS Arizona Memorial commemorates all those who lost their lives in the December 7, 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor, which marked the United States’ entry into WWII.

Pearl Harbor Kalaupapa, Molokai

Pacific Historic Parks supports the interpretation of the events that took place during WWII in the Pacific through the operation of a bookstore and membership program and the funding of museum displays and exhibits. We also provide educational programs for visitors, students and educators from around the world.

This 10,700 acre-park is located on the north shore of the island of molokai in the state of Hawaii.

Included in this area are the historic Hansen’s disease (leprosy) settlements at Kalaupapa and at Kalawao, made famous through the work of Belgian priest Joseph De Veuster (Saint Damien). The few Hansen’s disease patients living in Kalaupapa and elsewhere keep the history of the settlement alive through their memories and experiences.

Pacific Historic Parks supports the preservation and protection of significant sites within the Park including an endowment for the renovation and maintenance of St. Damien’s own St. Philomena Church.

Saipan was sold to Germany after the Spanish-American War in 1898, then taken

by Japan after WWI under a League of Nations mandate.

On June 15, 1944, the Battle of Saipan commenced as Operation Forager. United States Marines invaded the island due to its location as a forward B-29 air base within range of Japan and as a major impediment to Japanese supply lines in the South Pacific.

The campaign took 3 weeks to complete at the cost in lives of more than 5,000 Americans, close to 30,000 Japanese, and 1,000 indigenous Chamorros and Carolinians.

Pacific Historic Parks is committed to honoring the memory of this crucial Pacific War battle and to help further educational opportunities on Saipan.

Guam became an unincorporated territory of the United States in 1950 through the Guam Organic Act. Colonized by Spain in 1668, the island was granted to the US by the Treaty of Paris following the Spanish-American War in 1898.

On December 8, 1941, Guam was attacked and occupied by Japan. Suffering great hardship during their 31-month occupation, the Chamorros of Guam now celebrate July 21 as Liberation Day. On that day in 1944, approximately 36,000 US Marines and Army soldiers attacked the 22,000 Japanese defenders, achieving victory after 3 weeks of intense and brutal fighting.

A plaque on the Marine monument located on the Asan invasion beach reads, “The years have dimmed the sight but not the memory....Nowhere else does the brotherhood of battle extend so fully between the liberators and the liberated Chamorros.... We have felt each other’s pain...and we are grateful for a precious turning point in our lives.”

Hawaii became a territory of the United States in 1898 and the 50th State of the Union on August 21, 1959. Pearl Harbor is home to the US Navy’s Pacific Fleet, and recently joined with the US Air Force to form Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam.

On December 7, 1941, the Empire of Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, seeking to disable America’s Far East ambitions and its newly relocated Pacific Fleet. The surprise attack vaulted the US into WWII and commenced four years of bitter, brutal fighting and, as historian John Dower described it, a “war without mercy.”

Pearl Harbor has become a hallowed place of remembrance for people from all over the world, a fitting honor for a place long held sacred by native Hawaiians.

Recently, Pearl Harbor and its historic sites, USS Arizona Memorial, USS Oklahoma Memorial, USS Utah Memorial, and historic Battleship Row mooring quays and CPO bungalows, were designated as the WWII Valor in the Pacific National Monument.

The remote Kalaupapa Peninsula on the island of Molokai offers miracles of natural, rugged beauty. But it was this very quality of remoteness that made it an ideal place for the forced relocation of over 8000 Hansen’s Disease patients from 1866 until 1969.

Designated a National Park in 1980, surviving patients still call Kalaupapa home.

Tourism is limited due to privacy concerns but a trip to Kalaupapa provides a chance to encounter history, culture, natural wonders, and the redemptive power of hope.

St. Damien of Molokai exemplifies the human capacity for charity. His work on Kalaupapa was recognized by the Catholic Church as miraculous and in 2009, Joseph de Veuster joined the pantheon of Saints.

Pacific Historic Parks is heavily involved in the restoration and maintenance of many of the historic sites at Kalaupapa and we hope to bring the story of the brave and charitable people there to new generations. s u m m e r

t was the 1960s and skirts were short, hair was long, and the lines of people waiting to visit the USS Arizona Memorial were getting longer. defying expectations, visitation to the Memorial had grown exponentially since its dedication in 1962. That first year, 178,000 people visited; in 1968 the number had risen to 283,000. By 1978, over 1.2 million people were coming annually to Pearl Harbor to pay their respects to those lost on december 7, 1941.

What passed for a shoreside facility at that time was called the Arizona Memorial Boat landing, a site directly across Halawa Stream with an old WWII fleet mooring where small boats used to land liberty parties. Pearl Harbor Survivor and president of the Arizona Memorial Museum Foundation (AMMF), precursor organization to the Arizona Memorial Museum Association, Mr. Sandy Saunders, saw a desperate need for better facilities: “The Navy would come out and pick up people...and carry them to the Memorial, but nothing was set up permanently. They had a real long waiting area there that reached from the railroad tracks to the landing. We’d see all the young ladies and they’d be all red in the sunshine; they’d be burnt to a crisp.”

The Fleet Reserve Association’s Branch 46 and the AMMF would eventually raise close to $900,000 for the construction of a new visitor center, dedicated on October 10, 1980. The $4.2 million facility boasted a new boat landing, twin, state-of-the-art movie theaters, a museum with historic artifacts and interpretive displays, and landscaped courtyard, walkways, and back lawn viewing terrace. r e m e m b r a n c e

The center served its purpose well for decades.

But, built on land dredged from Pearl Harbor, the three interconnected buildings were supposed to sink no more than 18 inches. 30 years, 30 inches, and four hydraulic lifts later, the Arizona Memorial Museum Association (AMMA) and the National Park Service realized something had to be done.

A capital campaign to raise the necessary funds to stabilize the visitor center was begun by AMMA in 2002. The Pearl Harbor Memorial Fund was initially directed to raise enough money for a few relatively simple modifications. The thinking at the

time was that with the addition of new restrooms and a plan to somehow tweak the weight distribution of the heavy concrete buildings, all would be well for another 30 years. After thorough evaluation however, engineers realized that nothing less than a completely new visitor center would solve the deteriorating situation.

Eight years of fund-raising ensued, as generous and dedicated AMMA members came together with many outstanding corporations and concerned government entities to collect the necessary $56 million for a brand new Pearl Harbor Memorial Museum & Visitor Center.

On February 17, 2010, the doors to Phase 1 of the new center were opened to the public. The rest of the Visitor Center complex, to include museum exhibit spaces and the refurbished theaters, will officially open december 7, 2010. At that time, december 7 commemoration ceremonies which have been held at the Navy’s Kilo Pier for the past four years, will return to the center’s expanded back lawn.

Expected to attend the ceremonies are Pearl Harbor Survivors from all over the country.

The Manila American Cemetery and Memorial

t one time an isolated plateau miles from the tumult and roar of urban Manila, the high terrain surrounding the former US Fort McKinley (now Fort Bonifacio, headquarters of the Philippine Army) provides an ideal setting for sacred ground. Through the years civilization has encroached on this peaceful site; city life clamoring just outside of its gates as high rise condominiums spike into the sky around its perimeter. There is no place on the grounds now that one can totally tune out the hustle and bustle of Global City, Taguig, Metro Manila, Philippines. yet the Manila American Cemetery and Memorial is a place of solemnity, peace, tranquility and grace. This unexpected oasis, providing relief from the cosmopoli-

tan environment that surrounds it, is a beautiful and fitting tribute to the lives enshrined there.

The American Battle Monuments Commission completed this most appropriate but somewhat overlooked memorial and cemetery in 1960 and continues its management and care today. It is the only American military cemetery still extant in the Western Pacific. Shortly after the end of the War in the Pacific, most of the cemeteries dotting Western Pacific islands were closed and the remains of our brave service members repatriated to American soil.

There are some, however, whose remains still rest in the former American territory of the Philippines Islands. 17,202 of those r e m e m b r a n c e

who lost their lives in battles ranging from New Guinea to the Philippines now rest here for eternity. Each grave is marked by a white marble monument giving the name of each buried there; with far too many marked “Here rests in honored glory, a comrade in arms, known but to God.” Appropriately, the over three thousand headstones marked as “unknowns” are given the same space and respect as those identified by name.

The grounds are immaculate in honor of those who served and gave so much of themselves. The grass is evenly cut, the shrubs neatly trimmed, the trees shady and seemingly protective of those who lie beneath them. Here and there are dazzles of colored plants helping to brighten the landscape. The obvious care by maintenance personnel is a reflection of the love of those who devoted everything for our freedom.

The Memorial itself is made up of a tower containing a small chapel and two “hemicycles,” curved collections of walls set like dominoes in a circle. The hemicycle walls are engraved with the names of those lost during the Pacific War whose remains were never recovered. Over 36,000 names are engraved here. Some are in gold lettering reminding us of those who are Medal of Honor recipients. There are also the names of numerous Philippine Scouts who greatly assisted the Americans in the retreat from the Philippines; fell with them in the death march at Bataan; and battled relentlessly during the retaking of their home islands. Of note on these walls are the names

of the five Sullivan brothers who went down with the USS Juneau in the Solomon’s Iron Bottom Sound. The number of names on these walls is staggering, representing those lost but not forgotten.

At each end of the hemicycles are rooms with murals depicting the events of the War in the Pacific in beautiful glass mosaic detail. Twenty five in all, these maps or murals show visitors the extent of the various battles of the Pacific War, the efforts of the US Submarine Service during that war, individual island battles, general strategies during the war, the air war against Japan and even the European front during the WWII. Although very far now from American shores, the Manila American Cemetery and Memorial is well worth the trip to the Philippines. It is an honorable and respectful place, almost out of place, in this bustling area of the Philippines. I would suggest no less than three hours if you are going to visit. The American Battle Monuments Commission is to be commended on their care and upkeep of this important place for the memory of those who gave their lives for us during this time of war.

In the visitor center at the entrance are pictures of the other sites that the Commission is charged with keeping, including one in New york City, others overseas in the Pacific and in Europe. The website for the Manila American Cemetery and Memorial keeps a very detailed description of the grounds and the memorial as well as a 27 page narrative on the Pacific Campaign of WWII.

Educational outreach brings neighbor island students to Pearl Harbor

By Steve Kooiman, Education Specialist Pacific Historic Parks Background It has been a goal of the National Park Service (NPS), the Arizona Memorial Museum Association (AMMA), and all of the Pearl Harbor Historic Sites, to bring our story of World War II to Hawaii’s neighbor island schools, or, better yet, to bring the neighbor islands to Pearl Harbor, where WWII began for the United States. This in turn would give future generations a sense of immediacy and relevance to the december 7, 1941 story. The major challenges were: funding for travel and lodging; a teacher willing to put in

This was obviously too costly. A call to the group desk at Hawaiian Airlines resulted in half-price fares. (Thank you Hawaiian Air for your generosity.) AMMA would cover the cost of the airfare, while each site agreed to offset the cost for the tours and the overnight experience. NPS agreed to cover bus cost, EMI Sports Hawaii volunteered to buy the lunches for both days. Each participant would pay for their own tours at the 3 partner sites.

Kauai high school student all the work necessary to build a lesson plan relevant to then and now; and, maybe most challenging of all, coordinating the travel of 23 high school students, with all the requisite permissions, clearances and documents, as well suitable adult chaperones.

In January 2010, the 4th annual Teaching American History conference, a two day teacher workshop, was conducted here at the Pearl Harbor Historic Sites. during that seminar, I met Christian Morgado, a 10th grade history teacher from Kauai High School. Through many hours of discussion, and after reading his lesson plan assignments for the workshop, Propaganda, An essay on the similarities between pre-war relations with Japan and current day North Korea and Iran, Time lines to war, I knew we had found the teacher.

Mr. Morgado arranged for chaperones and selected the students by their GPA. He gave the assignments and recommended readings prior to their trip. Most students had rough drafts of their essays completed, so it was obvious that they had done a lot of research prior to arriving.

Day 1 Saturday, April 17, 2010, kids were up and at the lihue airport by 6:00 AM.; in the air and landing in Honolulu by 7:00 AM. They realize that their efforts will set the groundwork for many future students. With their arrival at the Arizona Memorial, their bags were dropped off with dan Parsons of the Mighty Mo, and they received a short presentation. After viewing the orientation movie they studied the new signage about the park, then took the boat to the Memorial and listened to a special interpretive talk once on the Memorial itself.

Next was a tour of the Bowfin Submarine and Museum, followed by a bus ride to the Battleship Missouri. Before r e m e m b r a n c e

entering the gates at the Missouri, the group stopped at the USS Oklahoma Memorial for an interpretive program and pictures. After lunch, they participated in a “Survivor Presentation” with Mr. Al Rodrigues, a Kauai HS graduate himself. The former Navy storekeeper told them of his experiences growing up on Kauai as well as surviving the attack on Pearl Harbor. Mr. Chip Gunter from the Pacific Aviation Museum, a retired fighter pilot, shared his experience of flying during the Korean, Vietnam and Cold Wars.

Mr. Neil yamamoto, Encampment Coordinator for the Mighty Mo gave a wonderful presentation on propaganda, while I, as the Education Specialist for AMMA, provided an in-depth lecture on the events leading up to the attack on Pearl Harbor. The rest of the evening was spent working on assignments.

Q: How is visiting the Pearl Harbor Historic Sites and hearing from the survivors different from reading about history in a textbook?

Reanna Javinar ...[T]o hear from war veterans, the total emotion is different from what you would read. In the media today, you shouldn’t really believe everything you read ‘cause some of it isn’t accurate...but getting information from actual war veterans, you can feel their emotions...I can see the emotion in their eyes that they didn’t want to remember the bad things...

Cinzia Bruno I think the main difference would be adding an image to the words. When you read about it you have a picture that comes into your head but the picture isn’t like the things you’ve seen. you can’t imagine how amazing it is until you’re actually there and can see it.

the Pacific Aviation Museum. The good people there would provide a world class tour and host the students for day 2. April Emerson, Education Coordinator, provided crucial assistance for this phase of the program. Students worked on assignments and ate lunch as Ms. Emerson conducted video interviews on their thoughts of the experience of the past two days.

It became obvious even before the assignments were completed that our benchmark had been set far too low for these kids. They exceeded all of our expectations and proved what a valuable resource they are and what an important source of information we have in Pearl Harbor.

I have never been involved in any project that I enjoyed more, or that touched me deeper than this one. No workshop has ever been more productive, worthwhile, and in need of repeating, not only for these students, but for the thousands who will benefit from this program in the future.

But when you actually sit down with them and you hear it from them and you actually hear what it is that they went through you kind of, it really gets to you.

Q: How do you think you can apply what you learned about Japan’s attack in 1941 to the current state of affairs in North Korea and Iran?

Cristy Bonilla ...I feel that if we look at what we did back then we could change what could happen now so that we don’t have to go to war.

Travis Navarro There are striking similarities and parallels between the build up to Japan’s attack and what is happening within the past three

years... I still think we’re far away with Iran and that we can avoid critical mass from happening and an attack from Iran from happening. So that if we use the knowledge we have, and the way we treated the events leading up to it, we can change the way Iran would react and create a peaceful world.

Q: What would be one experience from this weekend that you will remember for the rest of your life and likely share with future generations?

Megan Keller Well there’s a lot of different things that I experienced that are just – they really got to me, but one of them was when we visited the USS Arizona Memorial and when you walked into the [Shrine] room and you just looked up at the wall and you saw all those names of all those men...who died on the ship after being attacked…we don’t really think about it when we read it in school and stuff but when you actually experience it it’s sort of, it actually really gets to you and I think all of us felt that when we came here. s u m m e r

Those who visited the site, however, came away amazed at the way Mr. Gerber creatively recycled materials to construct his museum. Put together solidly and seamlessly, one would never know the parts were old airline gangways with reclaimed sheets of wood laminate cladding the interior, fragments from WWII quonset huts; and lumber begged or borrowed from friends.

Pacific War Museum founder and proud former Marine dies A series of news articles in Guam’s Pacific Daily News, Pacific News Center, and Guam News Watch, and television reports from local station KUAM relayed the shocking news that John Gerber, champion of the US Marine Corps’ legacy on Guam and founder of the Pacific War Museum, passed away May 2, 2010.

Pacific Daily News, May 4, 2010 John Gerber, a Marine veteran who also helped to bridge ties between the local and military communities on Guam, has died.

The governor's office confirmed Gerber's death just minutes ago.

Gerber also is well-remembered for lobbying for Route 1 to be renamed Marine Corps drive in honor of the Marines who helped to liberate the island from the wartime Japanese occupation more than half a century ago.

Gerber pulled a carabao cart across the island - from Andersen Air Force Base to Naval Station - for the name change....

dear friends, Well, here we are again, in another issue of Remembrance.

Ray Sandla, the editor, asked Al and myself to say a few words about fund raising for the Pearl Harbor Memorial Museum & Visitor Center. Guess he ran out of things to say.

I can see why, he does go on a bit. Anyway, the picture above is of us at the interment for Mr. Anthony Schubert. We attend these ceremonies so that we can pay tribute to one of our own. While Al was a Navy man and I was in the Army at the time, we don’t stand on ceremony when it comes to being a Pearl Harbor Survivor.

There are fewer and fewer of us each year and while we don’t think we are particularly special as individuals, as a group, we represent a special memory and an important message. Our slogan has always been Remember Pearl Harbor, Keep America Alert. We’d like to think those in the military, as well as the civilians, who risked their lives at Pearl Harbor on december 7, 1941 will be remembered for being simple guys and gals trying to do a job that would give everyone in this great country the freedom to do what they want to do and be who they want to be.

We understand the exhibits at the new Museum will help people understand and remember that day and the four years of war that followed. We’re certainly glad to hear it. It was an honor for us to serve then, and an honor for us to try to help people remember now. We only hope you’ll help us keep the memory alive into the future.

Pearl Harbor Day Ceremonies to return to Visitor Center The 69th Anniversary Pearl Harbor day Commemoration will return to the newly expanded back lawn of the Pearl Harbor Memorial Museum & Visitor Center after four years of US Navy-hosted events at Naval Station Pearl Harbor’s Kilo Pier.

The following is a brief schedule of events leading up to and including december 7, 2010. Plans are necessarily tentative; please pardon any inconvenience due to late changes and/or amendments.

Sunday, December 5th: KamaĘťaina Day: Events throughout the day focusing on Hawaiian history on Oahu and Pearl Harbor. Music, entertainment, and Hawaiian history talk story are planned.

Monday, December 6th: Armed Services Recognition Day: Color guard, flag raising ceremony, music, and history talks are planned; USS Utah Sunset Ceremony in the evening.

Funeral for a friend National Park Service release Family members of USS Arizona Survivor Anthony Robert Schubert joined representatives from the National Park Service and Navy Region Hawaii for a private Memorial Ceremony and Interment onboard the USS Arizona Memorial, May 7, 2010.

Anthony Robert Schubert, a veteran of the december 7, 1941 “day of Infamy”, aboard the USS Arizona, died August 12, 2009 in Hutchinson, Kansas. He passed away at the age of 90. Born October 24, 1918, in lagmond, Kansas, Mr. Schubert grew up a child of the Great depression. He attended Hutchinson High School and was appointed to the United States Naval Academy with the class of 1940.

Following graduation in June 1940, Ensign Schubert was assigned to the USS Arizona. At 7:55 AM on Sunday, december 7, 1941, he heard scattered gunfire and looked out the port hole to see “several low-winged monoplanes at low altitude flying away from the line of moored battleships, having finished an attack run.” In his USS Arizona Action Report, Ensign Schubert stated, “There were more explosions, which filled the air with fumes and vented out the port. The ship was down by the bow and sinking so rapidly that the lines from the ship to the after quay were snapping.”

Schubert assisted getting the wounded, chiefly burn cases, into the launches sent from the USS Solace. He stated, “I left the ship in the gig and returned in a motor boat with which we made two trips to the Ford Island landing…I had the boat crew leave me off at the Solace to have…burns on my hand and arm dressed.”

After Pearl Harbor, Schubert served aboard the USS South Dakota, participating in action in both the Pacific and Atlantic Theaters. In 1946, he married Edythe Godfrey of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Mr. Schubert is survived by his daughter, Tonay Hayward, and his granddaughter, Jacky Hayward.

Crewmembers who were assigned to the USS Arizona on december 7, 1941, have the right to have their cremated remains interred inside the barbette of gun turret four by National Park Service divers. Services are conducted on the memorial and consist of an invocation, funeral ceremony, and a flag presentation to the family.

Schubert’s ceremony included a two-bell ceremony from the Fleet Reserve Association; a rifle salute from the Navy Region Hawaii Ceremonial Guard; and a benediction with the echo of Taps being played across the harbor. Following the ceremony, Schubert’s urn was carried from the Memorial to the dock area and presented to National Park Service divers, who took the urn into the open barbette of gun turret number four and proceeded to a large open “slot” that measures approximately 6" x 5”. The urn was then placed into this slot and into the ship.

In the Shrine Room at the USS Arizona Memorial, a large wall lists the names of the Arizona’s dead. A smaller wall contains the names of Arizona survivors who chose to rejoin their shipmates in their final resting place. Anthony Robert Schubert’s engraved name was added to this wall.

Morris Jeppson 1923 - 2010

Morris Jeppson was 19 years old when he joined the Army Air Forces and was shipped to Boca Raton, Florida for basic training. After attending specialized electrical engineering courses at Yale, Harvard, and MIT, Mr. Jeppson was sent to Wendover, Utah where he joined the 509th Composite B-29 Group led by Col. Paul Tibbits. Mr. Jeppson later joined the Enola Gay flight crew as electronics officer, or weaponeer, in charge of testing and verifying the sophisticated electronics that would ensure detonation of the atomic bomb over Hiroshima, Japan.

Mr. Jeppson was an amiable gentleman when I met him on Saipan in 2004, where he was attending the 60th Anniversary Commemoration of the Battles for Saipan and Tinian. It is well-known in the Marianas and

This year, 2005, marks the 60th year since the end of World War II. The summer of 1945 was indeed an anxious one as allied and American forces gathered for the inevitable invasion of the Japanese homeland. President Truman made one last demand, one final appeal. Together with Great Britain’s Churchill, and Russia’s Stalin, the President of the United States urged the Japanese to “…proclaim the unconditional surrender of all Japanese armed forces. The alternative,” they said, “for Japan is prompt and utter destruction.” Ignoring the obvious military situation, the Japanese Prime Minister Baron Kantaro Suzuki issued the Japanese refusal to surrender which included these words: “...there is no other recourse but to ignore it [the surrender demand] entirely and resolutely fight for the successful conclusion of the war.”

On Aug. 6, 1945, the B-29 Superfortress Enola Gay dropped the world’s first atomic bomb on the island of Hiroshima hoping to expedite the end of World War II. The second atomic weapon was delivered over Nagasaki by the B-29 Superfortress Bocks Car three days later. The availability of those weapons in the American arsenal left President Truman no choice but to use them. To spare the world a horrific invasion and to save American, allied, and Japanese lives was literally the only course of prudent action.

The surviving members of the Enola Gay crew: Paul W. Tibbets (pilot), Theodore J. “dutch” Van Kirk (navigator) and Morris R. Jeppson (weapon test officer) have repeatedly and humbly proclaimed that, “The use of the atomic weapon was a 1 8

Guam that Saipan fared much better than her southern neighbor during their respective Japanese occupations. On Saipan, Japan had built a thriving sugar industry, schools, and generally good relations between the Japanese army and local Saipan Chamorros. Many veterans expressed concern as to how they would be received. But as Mr. Jeppson stated near the end of the commemoration events, “The one thing I would like to say is if we could only take this marvelous spirit of freedom and democracy back to the rest of the US, it would be our greatest treasure.”

necessary moment in history. We have no regrets.” They have steadfastly taken that stance for the past six decades.

“In the past 60 years since Hiroshima I have received many letters from people all over the world. The vast majority have expressed gratitude that the 509th Composite group consisting of 1700 men, 15 B-29s and 6 C-54s were able to deliver the bombs that ended the war. Over the years, thousands of former soldiers and military family members have expressed a particularly touching and personal gratitude suggesting that they might not be alive today had it been necessary to resort to an invasion of the Japanese home islands to end the fighting.

In addition to Americans veterans, I have been thanked as well

by Japanese veterans and civilians who would have been expected to carry out a suicidal defense of their homelands.

Combined with the efforts of all Americans and our allies we were able to stop the killing,” comments Brigadier General Paul W. Tibbets. It is a sentiment upon which the surviving crewmen are unanimous.

In this year, 2005, we will observe the anniversary of the epic flight of the Enola Gay close to our homes and our friends. To our fellow veterans and the American nation we all echo one sentiment, “I pray that reason will prevail among leaders before we ever again need to call upon our nuclear might. There are no regrets. We were proud to have served like so many men and women stationed around the world today.

“The arming of the bomb was about half an hour before the bomb was dropped. My last job was to climb into the bomb bay and remove those three testing plugs, painted green and each about the size of a saltshaker. Those plugs isolated the testing system from the bomb, so there was no chance of any voltage getting from the bomb to the testing system....

People were looking down and seeing this enormous cloud coming up and the destruction spreading out from the base-with flames and black smoke and white smoke. And that's the point that it's somber because you know a lot of people are getting destroyed down there with the city. No joy at that point. But it was a job that was done.

Everyone by this time was tired. When we landed, the plane was greeted by several hundred people, a whole group of Army, Navy, Air Force generals and admirals. I was lost in the crowd, so it didn't make any difference. The crew went off to a debriefing. Nobody knew particularly what my role or our group's role was, so I went back to my tent. Sitting on the edge of my bunk was a Navy lieutenant whom I had grown up with from the first grade--my best friend Jack Scott. I didn't know he was even on the island, but he said, ‘Come to the Navy base on the other end of the island. We have a good officers' mess there, and we'll have a good meal....’ So we drove down there and had dinner, and there were several Navy officers there.

One of them turned to me and asked, ‘What did you do today?’

I'd heard a lot of their stories, so I thought I'd make just one remark. I said, ‘I think we ended the war today.’”

All current memberships with our organization (formerly named, Arizona Memorial Museum Association) will transfer automatically to Pacific Historic Parks membership. New Pacific Historic Parks Membership Cards will be mailed out this summer to all current members. While our name and logos have been rebranded, our mission remains the same.
