Guam’s beauty belies the stormy history of the island and its strained relationship with neighboring Saipan.

G

uam is a very interesting place. Its natural beauty is evident from the photo above, yet a rich and sometimes violent history lies beneath the placid charm of the island. the Chamorro people are said to have migrated to the south pacific thousands of years ago from the malay peninsula and southeast asia. relics of their ancient history can still be found in abundance on the island in the form of latte stones. these massive coral limestone pillars, used to support the homes of the early residents, are notable for their unique construction, and for their mysterious, and relatively late emergence (aD 1000). after magellan stumbled onto Guam on his way to the philippines in 1521, miguel Lopez de Legazpi claimed the mariana Islands for philip II of spain in 1565. the ubiquitous Catholicism and the odd cannon, bridge or plaza don’t reveal much about the 300 years of sometimes peaceful, sometimes violent spanish rule. the us took control of Guam in 1898 after the spanish american War and practiced a particularly benign form of governance until early in December, 1941.

Long colonized by competing imperial powers for various strategic commercial and military reasons, the Chamorro people live in understandable denial about their r e m e m b r a n c e

past. Layers of spanish, american, and Japanese cultural inculcation have left the Chamorros with a forgotten language and a misplaced indigenous way of life. the Japanese moved the Germans (who had purchased the islands from the spanish in 1899) out of saipan, tinian, and rota at the beginning of WWI and formally took control of the marianas under a League of nations mandate as allies of the united states, Britain, and France in 1918. By 1941, the Japanese had developed thriving fishing and sugar industries and had garrisoned close to 30,000 military personnel on the islands.

Due to the fickle nature of war, the Chamorros of saipan and those of Guam found themselves on different sides at the outbreak of WWII in the pacific. Deepseated distrust and bitterness developed between the two cultures that remains to this day. at a planning meeting for Guam’s Liberation Day 60th anniversary Commemoration, an idea was presented to have the two Chamorro people enact some sort of formal reconciliation. a vibration like a mis-plucked violin string went through the room before tony palomo, Director of the Guam museum rose and began to talk about a history that many in the room had only read about. as a child mr. palomo witnessed

the capture of Guam by the Japanese. He felt the Chamorros from saipan who aided the attack, “acted more Japanese than the Japanese.” this perceived over-zealousness has caused many of mr. palomo’s generation to resist a resolution to the acrimony that exists between the islanders. there can be no judgement of this rancor. Only a realization that it is there and must be dealt with if the islands are to move forward.

In some ways it is a familiar scenario. at the 60th anniversary pearl Harbor Commemoration, I was fortunate to be able to witness a settlement of long-held animosities: Japanese pilots who had flown against pearl Harbor, shaking hands with the men they had attacked. It was an emotional scene to watch as men, now in their eighties, walked hesitantly toward each other and slowly grasped hands. the audience, standing in silence, cried for the memories of pain and loss, finally put to rest. nations have reasons to war against each other. Countries must put hatred into the hearts of their warriors to achieve victory. some of these warriors can never put that hatred behind them; too many friends were lost, too much blood left on the battlefield. tony palomo knows what it means to hate, and what it means to try to forgive. “We must get beyond it,” he said. He sat down in his chair and looked out the window of the meeting room at the grey mid-morning light. w

the photograph on the back cover represents a special viewpoint that should appeal to all the people who have ever visited the uss Arizona memorial. the attack on pearl Harbor has just begun. the uss Oklahoma is still upright, the uss Nevada has not yet left her berth for the dramatic and courageous sortie down the channel, and the uss Arizona has just exploded in a horrendous fireball, leaving smoke to pour from the destruction of its forward compartments. the photo shows the exact site of the future uss Arizona memorial Visitor Center. the ground has not been filled in yet, that would happen later in the war.

But Halawa stream is clearly visible on the left, with the navy supply base, just beyond. seeing this picture reminded me of H. G. Wells’ The Time Machine. a visitor stands in one place as history wheels around them. Japanese planes fly low overhead, out of the sun, so close, you can see the white bands tied around their heads. a war begins in a flash of flame and thunder. the Visitor Center is a special place. It is a point in space and time that witnessed world-changing events. standing quietly on the back lawn, you can almost sense the rush of time. the photograph, and the place, remain. f a l l

I

t all started with a letter asking for donations to build a memorial for the uss Arizona. the letter, written by Honolulu Advertiser editor George Chaplin, was published in newspapers across the united states, including the Los Angles Examiner, which was read by Colonel tom parker, elvis presley’s manager. Col. parker then arranged what would become one of the most memorable concerts events ever held in Hawaii. after reading the editorial, Col. parker immediately called the Honolulu Advertiser. the newspaper put him in touch with H. tucker Gratz, chairman of the pacific War memorial Commission, the group charged with building the memorial. Gratz and parker were able to work out an agreement that allowed presley to stage a benefit performance for the uss Arizona memorial Fund. parker’s only stipulation was that 100% of the proceeds had to go to the building fund. Gratz happily agreed to find alternative sources to pay for incidental expenses.

March 8, 1961 Hawaiian Village Hotel Col. parker holds a press Conference to announce that everyone in Hawaii is invited to the show, as long as they buy a ticket. not even the admirals and generals normally accorded preferential admittance at pearl Harbor’s Bloch arena will be allowed past they gate without paying. the goal, he announces, is to raise $50,000. to make sure that all the proceeds for the concert go to the fundraiser, presley waives his regular performance fee of $25,000, and Col. parker and presley split the costs for flying in guest artists, as well as all advertising for the show.

Five days later tickets go on sale at the sears record Department at the ala moana shopping Center, priced at $10, $5, $3.50, and $3. to make the ticket release an event, photographs of elvis are given out to the first 1,000 ticket purchasers.

VIp tickets, priced at $100 each, are created to reach the $50,000 goal. elvis and the Colonel buy the first ones.

Oahu’s high schools. presley is awarded a plaque and a certificate making him an honorary member of the pacific War memorial Commission.

March 25, 1961 Bloch Arena, Pearl Harbor the evening opens with emcee comedian sterling mossman and house-band phil Ingall’s Orchestra followed by presley’s invited guests, including pianist Floyd Cramer, the singing quartet the Jordanaires, jazz saxophone player and frequent elvis sideman Boots randolph, and special guest, “Grand Ole Opry” star, minnie pearl.

During the intermission, Col. tom and Honolulu Advertiser columnist eddie sherman sell pictures of elvis to the waiting crowd. the Col. gives mr. sherman a quick course in salesmanship, “take whatever bill they hold up and don’t give nobody no change.”

One and a half hours after the concert starts, elvis presley, wearing a gold jacket, dark blue trousers and white shirt, enters to thunderous screams from the fans. He performs 15 songs, one of the longer concerts of his career, including the smash hits “Heartbreak Hotel,” “all shook up,” “that’s all right mama,” “are You Lonesome tonight,” and “Hound Dog.” Honolulu won’t soon forget the exuberance and power displayed by a performer and band at the height of their talents. the uss Arizona memorial can never forget the contributions and generosity of the world’s greatest entertainer. thank you elvis. w

For the past two years, Hawaii pacific university’s graduate Communications Department has been involved in a partnership with the uss Arizona memorial. the goal is to have graduate students develop projects that will enhance our historical and interpretive message at the memorial.

Guided by national park service and arizona memorial museum association staff, these students develop and produce projects that can be used everyday at the memorial. some of the projects completed over the past academic terms have been a complete review of how local newspapers have depicted the memorial, designs for new admission tickets to the memorial, a virtual tour of the memorial suitable for the memorial’s web site, as well as brochures highlighting the Volunteers in the park program.

Last spring, Hpu student agneta “agge” sjobom took on the task of creating a site bulletin describing elvis presley’s contribution to the uss Arizona memorial Fund and subsequent finalization of the memorial’s construction. this project came about due to the numerous questions park rangers receive regarding elvis’ participation in the memorial’s construc-

tion. the memorial staff believed a site bulletin containing all of the pertinent facts surrounding elvis and his charity concert at Bloch arena (which raised over $60,000 and helped to complete construction on the memorial) would be just what was needed to disseminate information to visitors.

With guidance from amma staff member michelle Bradley, agge created the site bulletin. agge contacted the staff at Graceland and managed to acquire neverbefore-seen photographs of elvis at the concert and in Hawaii. she also was able to obtain photos and information regarding the concert from tom moffatt, one of the key figures responsible for arranging and promoting the concert in Hawaii. through mr. moffatt’s generosity, several photos were added to the brochure. agge’s dedication has produced a quality work, which will be available to visitors of the memorial for years to come. the uss Arizona memorial’s partnership with Hawaii pacific university is continuing this term with several new and exciting projects already underway. w r e m e m b r a n c e

y dive that day would be the first salvage dive inside the sunken hull. an external survey revealed what appeared to be a hole below the mud line on the after port side, presumably made by an unexploded torpedo or bomb. my mission: find the missile and attach a lock on the propeller to prevent it from arming itself and exploding. no salvage work could begin until the missile was rendered safe. this is a simple task for a trained diver. But as it turned out, there was nothing simple about it....

With exaggerated deliberation, I climbed down the wooden ladder and entered the oil-covered water. my helmet was barely awash as I walked aft on the battleship’s main deck, skirting wreckage. the dense floating mass of oil blotted out all daylight.

I was submerged in total blackness. Only a line of air bubbles that popped to the surface marked my path for topside observers as I traveled the thirty-five feet to the Arizona’s entrance....

I moved cautiously, feeling my way with ungloved hands....What I would find, I had no inkling. eventually, it would draw on every ounce of courage I possessed. as I

looked up, I saw a light that glowed dimly, flickered, and disappeared. It must have been phosphorescence in the water, I thought as the blackness enveloped me once again. I shrugged as I thought: I would settle for just enough light to see the end of my nose. suddenly, I felt that something was wrong....”

Cmdr. edward C. raymer, pearl Harbor salvage operations’ chief diver for the navy, tells the story of pearl Harbor after December 7th, 1941. this often terrifying, sometimes tragic and ultimately triumphant recounting of the crucial work done by navy divers, under tremendous pressure to raise and rebuild the us pacific Fleet, is a must-read for any serious student of World War II. Cmdr. raymer also provides fascinating accounts of life in early 1940’s Hawaii. these stories are made all the more affecting by their brutally honest, and at times somewhat racy, delivery. w

this past October, I was invited by members of the arizona memorial museum association’s Board of Directors and president tom shaw, to document their trip to Guam. as the amma membership field representative, I attended meetings, took pictures, and generally tried to get a feel for the remote national parks that amma supports.

While amma does not have an official relationship with american memorial park on saipan, the association on occasion does provide funding for specific projects. the national park service has expressed a desire to develop a formal, mutually beneficial affiliation with amma at this site. the parks, and the south pacific in general, are going through significant changes caused by damaging international events. natural occurrences, such as super typhoons and the wholly manmade disaster of declining tourism due to international terrorism, asian financial crises, and infectious disease epidemics, have combined to substantially detour the region’s economic prospects.

Guam has been much more

negatively affected than saipan (profiled in the next issue of Remembrance) by these events due to its reliance on tourism as its sole industry. the problem is further exacerbated because Guam relies on Japanese tourists; over 75% of visitors to Guam come from Japan, a country which has been suffering its own economic troubles for over a decade.

Hotel occupancy rates on the island have hit historic lows, resulting in lower taxes for the government, and fewer jobs for locals. the only other source of income for the island, us government spending, until very recently, has also been declining.

With revenues, taxes, and investment falling precipitously since the mid-1990’s, local government and business have had to work more closely together to craft feasible remedies to the cash crunch. amma’s main purpose in visiting Guam was to establish a new bookstore and retail outlet. the former space in the national park service’s Haloda Building was destroyed by super typhoon pongsona last December. the first possible site the Board and mr. shaw checked

out was acanta mall in tumon Bay, Guam’s version of Waikiki. It was nice to feel wanted, but the acanta mall leasing agent’s willingness to kick current clients out of any space that the association found desirable was somewhat startling. the site was excellent in terms of tourist traffic, but tumon Bay’s on-again, off-again revitalization program added a sense of uncertainty to the decision-making process. acanta mall’s rep assured amma that the torn up sidewalks and giant holes in the ground would soon be gone. the second stop was agaña, or Hagatna as it is known in the Chamorro language.

Historically, agaña has been the governmental and commercial center of Guam. the spanish built the first Governor’s palace in the plaza de españa in 1736 and the beautiful Dulce nombre de maria Cathedral, originally built in 1669, destroyed by shelling during WWII, and rebuilt in its present location in 1958, is an agaña landmark. amma was invited to lunch at the Old Hagatna Grill, an enterprise owned by

Guam entrepreneur David Hanley. mr.

Hanley had gathered representatives of Guam’s legislature, First Lady Joanne Camacho, national park service personnel, and the amma delegation to discuss the renewal of the area.

While no new plans were put forward, besides a proposed legislative appropriation of six million dollars towards the goal, it was obvious the participants looked forward to an nps/amma presence in the neighborhood. a building housing the former Guam museum in the Chamorro Village, a cultural marketplace, was offered free of charge to amma as a possible bookstore site. the rest of the time on Guam was spent visiting the seven separate units that make up War in the pacific national Historical park.

It was a fascinating tour of World War II history in the south pacific with physical remnants of the battles still extant. the numerous physical remains of WWII on the island place the visitor in a surreal context. now placid asan Beach, where the r e m e m b r a n c e

3rd marine Division came ashore, and Ga’an point, where the southern landing occurred, are littered with pillboxes, defensive gun emplacements, and bunkers. a total of 55,000 us troops would eventually land on Guam, illustrating how important the island was to the overall us pacific strategy.

One can still view the huge Japanese coastal defense guns (thankfully never used) on the ridge behind the village of piti or gaze out from the asan Bay overlook at the hills below, where so many american and Japanese lost their lives. One can feel the heat and humidity of the jungle and almost hear enemy gunfire from the hidden bunkers and pillboxes. the Battle for Guam was a long, brutal, often forgotten step toward the Japanese homeland for the united states. the people of this island, however, will never forget. plans for the 60th anniversary of Liberation Day (July 21, 2004) are currently underway with national park service liaison and 60th anniversary Coordinator Jessica Jordan representing amma. eric Brunnemann is the national park service superintendent for War in the memorial park. He and his dedicated staff might possibly be the busiest people on Guam. In the past three months, park service personnel have taken on the following immediate and long-term projects: 1) finding a location for, and funding construction of, a new visitor center.

2) acquiring and finding a home for

the navy’s extensive collection of artifacts and documents relating to WWII. the navy recently indicated its intention to close the museum on base and hand all property (including an 82 foot long Japanese midget submarine) to the national park service.

3) continuing surveys of the reef ecology relating to the park’s mission “to conserve and protect the cultural and natural resources for the benefit and enjoyment of present and future generations.”

4) a national public Lands Day Celebration involving 150 community volunteers planting bougainvilla (the official flower) along marine Drive, the main island highway.

5) celebrating the silver anniversary of War in the pacific park with a “movie in the park” event involving a free public outdoor showing of “the Fighting seabees,” free fruit drinks, water, and all-they-could-eat popcorn at the asan Beach unit.

6) developing an on-line museum through grants provided by the Guam Humanities Council and the national endowment for the Humanities. these grants were vigorously pursued and secured by project director and museum curator, tammy Duchesne. through these numerous initiatives, the nps on Guam hopes to involve and engage the community in the national park, while reaching out to the world to interpret its message of remembrance. amma would like to help in any way it can. w f a l l

U.S. Troop Landing and Advance

Importance of Guam the marianas island chain was strategically important to the united states war effort. the larger islands of Guam, tinian, and saipan were needed by the americans for airbases from which B-29 aircraft could make roundtrip bombing runs to Japan. possession of these islands would also cut the supply route to other Japanese-held islands, effectively neutralizing them. Other significant justifica-

at 8:29 on the morning of July 21, 1944, the 3rd marine Division landed on the beach in asan. a simultaneous assault was made on agat Beach to the south. the Japanese were forced to retreat to the beachhead at Fonte plateau and near mt.

Chaochao and mt. alutom as the americans pushed forward and westward to secure Cabras Island. the forces from agat Beach also advanced northward.

Extensive shelling of Japanese positions proved frustratingly ineffective due to the network of defensive caves, pillboxes, and bunkers.

landing bombardment by sheltering in a complex cave system in asan ridge and on adelup and asan points. the Japanese moved reserves from the Fonte plateau area to fight the u.s. assault, and despite constant u.s. air strikes and naval bombardment, continued moving men to strategic defensive positions. the heat, humidity and lack of water, combined with the inactivity of long shipboard confinement also took its toll on the u.s. troops. many fell ill from sheer exhaustion. Due to the intense downpours of the rainy season (approximately 30 inches or more in June and July alone) and the heavy bombardment, asan was literally a sea of mud. the tangled mass of jungle growth, jagged r e m e m b r a n c e

limestone, heaped boulders, and rubble impeded movement and made visual contact difficult.

By July 25-26, the Japanese had called for reinforcements. that night Japanese troops attempted a banzai counter assault on asan point. except for a few penetrations, the american lines held. It was the last major Japanese assault; 3,200 Japanese soldiers were lost that night. each side fought fiercely, but on July 29, the beachhead was secured and the Japanese retreated to the north of the island.

It wasn’t until august 10 that the americans successfully eliminated organized Japanese resistance.... the last major stand made by the Japanese was near mt. mataguac

in Yigo. the site is marked today by a Japanese shrine.

Of the 55,000 u.s. troops that landed on the island, 1,747 were killed in action or died of wounds. another 5,250 were wounded.

Japanese defenders and Korean labor force numbered about 18,500. Only 1,250 were taken prisoner; the rest were either killed in action, died of wounds, or committed suicide. the exact number of Guamanian casualties is unknown. Just prior to the assault most of the Chamorro people were moved to detention camps on the other side of the island, which (ironically) saved many lives. w

By Stan Melman very year the uss arizona memorial receives a steady flow of significant memorabilia from donors throughout the country. Because these generous individuals are donating the physical evidence of important parts of their lives, and of american history, the curatorial staff here at the uss Arizona memorial museum evaluates, catalogues, and enters these remarkable mementos with great care and diligence. the real purpose of the contributions, however, is to share these vivid historical memories with the public, in a museum

where they can be displayed in an inviting, learning environment. Despite concerted efforts by the museum staff to exhibit important mementos, the current museum does not have the space to accommodate all these cherished artifacts; thousands of visitors to the museum are deprived of access to vital moments in history. a new and larger uss Arizona memorial museum is the answer. then the museum will truly be a place where all objects of lasting interest and value are properly displayed and exhibited.

My Grandfather’s Story It looked like a standard letter from a student, yet something at the end of it caught my eye. “My grandfather was a salvage diver who worked at Pearl Harbor and experienced the attack. He left some things with us and told me stories before he died last year. If you know of any one who is interested in hearing his story, please let me know.”

I was interested. I invited Brittany Beauchan and her family to the Memorial this past August. She is a 14 yearold freshman at Kalaheo High School, located on the windward side of Oahu. The following is the story of Frank Morales Beauchan, her grandfather.

t was the night of December 6th, 1941. my grandfather, Frank morales Beauchan, had just finished working the night shift at pearl Harbor. He decided he would take it easy the next day and sleep in. the next morning my grandfather was awakened by the distant sound of explosions. my grandparents lived in Liliha at the time, which is only a short

the roar of the engines above my grandfather caused him to look up; to his dismay he realized it was a Japanese plane. He recognized the rising sun emblem, and was able to see the face of the pilot. the plane, or zero as grandpa called it, started to shoot at him. His only hope was to dive under a truck to save himself. He saw the bullets hit the ground; they tore

“...he sped towards Pearl Harbor, unaware of the danger and chaos awaiting him.” distance from pearl Harbor. thinking the explosions were possibly some kind of drill, he turned on the radio to find out more information. turning the big, round knobs my grandfather soon heard the order for all civilian workers to report for work at pearl Harbor. Hurriedly collecting his belongings and work tools, he sped towards pearl Harbor, unaware of the danger and chaos awaiting him.

through the truck. the machine gun bullets could have easily ripped through my grandfather, but fortunately he was not injured. as he made his way through the chaos, a large explosion shook the badly damaged harbor. It was the uss Arizona. my grandfather recalled it as a giant, hot explosion. He said the ensuing smoke after the attack was very thick and black. He had to use an industrial strength flashlight

to see a few feet ahead of him. minutes later a steady flow of casualties rushed by, not only were there military casualties but many civilian casualties as well. my grandfather and the rest of the civilian crews had the horrific assignment of recovery and salvage ahead of them. He had lost a lot of friends, and like the military, Frank morales Beauchan was reporting to the call of duty. my grandfather had to help salvage everything. “everything” meant ships, planes, and bodies. He was a salvage diver and welder. He was lowered into the water r e m e m b r a n c e

with a blowtorch to cut holes in the ships. Divers were given only a single tube to breathe through, since there was no such thing as a sCuBa suit yet. the water was oily and murky, with a lot of decomposing things. sometimes they would retrieve items from the ship, other times bodies were retrieved. some of the bodies were falling apart and decomposing. He would grab an arm and it would fall off or skin would slip off. Crabs would cling to the bodies, feasting on the decomposing flesh. to keep the bodies together they would tie chains around the waists.

It was really horrendous for him; he and his crew were just young men. He heard the tapping of men still inside the capsized ship, uss Oklahoma. these were men trapped in the air pockets, slowly running out of oxygen. Grandpa and his crew would try to get them out.

He continued working at pearl Harbor for four straight days; he never went home and never talked to my grandma. Grandpa was not allowed to call her or make contact outside the harbor. He was really worried about her, and she was wor-

ried about him. He continued to work and help restore some of the ships to battle. For my grandfather, restoring those ships was a proud moment, a moment of awe at the bravery, ingenuity, and hard work of many civilian and military workers like him. However, my grandfather was very saddened by his experiences and it affected him up to his death.

Last year my grandfather passed away from cancer. the suspected cause was exposure to asbestos at the pearl Harbor shipyards. Before he passed away, the tragedy of september 11th occurred. It was a great shock to him and a couple of days afterward he went into delirium. the events of september 11th somehow triggered the memory of pearl Harbor. He stayed with us for one more year. During that time I can recall him calling out to old friends, calling to those who were killed. sometimes he would remember the Arizona exploding, and make

wild movements, as if it were occurring there in the hospital. I began to realize that my grandfather was letting go of all the bad memories that he had locked inside. It really hurt him bad and even though he wasn’t a sailor or a marine, it stayed within him.

It is important for all of us (both military and civilian) to share what happened on that fateful day. I know my grandfather would want other civilian workers like him to share their stories, for they also reported to the call of duty, many went above and beyond, and all witnessed the horror of war. w Dedicated to Grandpa Frank with Love, Brittany
