I’ve had my head in the wonderful world of weddings for over a year now, as I count down the months to my own big day this September. Penning down my own plans as I work through a checklist of ‘how to plan the perfect wedding’ has worked wonders and I’ve loved every minute of it!

The difference is in the actual gold content. An 18ct gold ring is 75% pure gold whereas 9ct gold is 37.5% pure.

Wedding rings can be bought cheaply off the internet, and of course, we do get thrifty couples looking for a great deal. We also get environmentally and socially-conscious couples in our shop who want to know how and where their wedding ring comes from. The cost of a wedding ring is dependant on the cost of the metal used, the costs to get it out of the ground and the cost to purify and refine the metal before making it into a ring.

The skill of the goldsmith will determine the proportions and finish off the ring, which can have long term implications on comfort and durability. We carefully source our rings from British manufacturers who are certified by The Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC), the internationally recognised standards setting and certification organisation for supply chain integrity and sustainability in the global fine jewellery and watch industry.

A cheap wedding ring may suggest a ‘skimpy’ lightweight product at best, poor working conditions or even child labour at worst, so be careful what you wish for in the pursuit of a bargain.

By buying your rings from a reputable jeweller you will benefit from expert advice in the process. Whether you choose a simple ‘court style’ band or a diamond-set design, hopefully you will wear your wedding ring forever and this powerful symbol of love will be one of the most special elements of one of the best days of your life.

The perfect simplicity of a circle, said to represent the unbroken bond of eternal love between a married couple. The wedding ring may be small in size, but huge in spiritual and sentimental significance. Long after the cake cutting and dancing, the wedding ring remains - a reminder of the promise of commitment made to share a future forever.

Wedding or engagement rings have featured throughout history and the lore surrounding them is fascinating. Some say the significance of wearing the ring on the third finger on the left hand represents a line of love which connects directly to the heart, although the Scandi tradition of wearing your wedding ring on the right hand does not seem to support this theory. Whatever the history, wedding rings are an important part of the marriage ritual and ticking ‘wedding rings’ off the list of things to do should not be left until the last minute.

One of my favourite jobs is helping the moony-eyed, loved-up couples in my shop choose their wedding rings. Whether it is young romantic couples, savvy second-timers or helping to soothe the pain of a lost wedding ring with a replacement, I see them all.

A good, well-made wedding ring should withstand a lifetime of wear.

Some are the simplest of plain bands, others are highly decorated, stone set, or specially shaped to fit around an engagement ring.

Platinum, a pure, rare white metal, is currently the most popular choice. Its durability and strength make it the ideal metal to hold diamonds securely in place. The perfect partner for a platinum engagement ring, is of course, a platinum wedding ring.

Gold wedding rings, however, are a beautiful and romantic choice and the soft glimmering lustre of yellow or rose gold can be incredibly flattering. Modern alloys of gold produce much harder WEDDING ESSENTIALS MARCH/APRIL 19

The cake

It was the classroom that brought Claire and Liam together. The pair met during a teacher training placement at Yarm School. When the time came, after making many happy memories together, Liam had a very romantic proposal up his sleeve. He took Claire back to the village of Wass in Yorkshire, where the pair had been on one of their very first dates. Very fitting as this was to be Claire’s surname.

Blossom Tree Cake Company were the brains behind the sweet creation. Three delicious layers of Victoria sponge, lemon drizzle and passionfruit, timelessly decorated with the initials C & L.

Special details

The couple tied the knot at St Peter’s Church in the quaint village of Croft-on-Tees. A colourful wedding celebration followed at the beautiful Rockliffe Hall. The venue’s laid back and luxurious nature sealed the deal for Claire and Liam. After checking in for regular spa days as a couple, it seemed the perfect fit.

Keeping things simple and elegant was important to Claire - with a little bit of tasteful ‘Alice in Wonderland’ cheekiness thrown in, a nod to the venue’s new enchanting woodland garden, Mischmasch.

Claire’s mum made Alice and Wonderland-themed quizzes for little ones to enjoy throughout the wedding.

Guests were guided from the church to Rockliffe in Wensleydale Omnibus’ London-style double-decker, while the couple turned up in an uber cool convertible Jag. The Rockliffe Suite was brought to life with beautiful blush blooms by Eliza Blood and an Omega Photobooth was set up for wedding keepsake snaps. Val Bilton set the soundtrack of the day with guitar acoustics throughout the ceremony and drinks reception, while Magnum Disco really got the party started with ‘top class’, school-themed floorfillers including ‘When I Kissed the Teacher’. Plenty of classroom jokes made for a running theme throughout the day. Liam’s best man gave him a lesson on love during the speech and Claire’s dad named her new school class Wass’ Wallabies.

Formulate a plan Starting as you mean to go on is the best way forward. Discuss your ideas with each other and make a list of what you really want, where your dream wedding would be held and most importantly, how much you want to spend. I know it sounds frightfully dull, but the more you can get down on paper in the early stages the easier it will be.

Is one day enough?

Dress the boys well It was Carson Kressley on “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy” who said that hired suits should all be banned and a man should walk down the aisle in a custom suit. I am with him totally. Why should the girls have all the fun?

The dress I like to get brides out shopping as soon as the venue is booked, so they can get a true idea of what suits them. It’s very rare that a bride goes for the style they think they will. Most brides haven’t really ventured down the road of formalwear and how it fits and changes your shape. Don’t get too carried away and buy too soon as I can guarantee that there will be an “I’ve chosen the wrong dress” meltdown at least once before the big day.

Truthfully, no! Destination weddings have this right with their cheeky three-day extravaganzas, but you don’t have to jet off to Tuscany you can easily extend the celebrations in the UK. It also needn’t add massively to the budget. Why not make the hotel breakfast the next day into a group brunch? A ‘rehearsal dinner’ or ‘arrival party’ is also a great way to kill those nerves.

Couples really enjoy the day after, a time to chat about the wedding day antics and really step into the world as the new Mr and Mrs.

There is a practicality for having two dresses.
