WORLD FIRST ‘CITYTREE’ ALIGHTS AT NEWCASTLE CENTRAL STATION

A breath of fresh air has arrived at Newcastle Central Station this summer, as it’s just been revealed that Newcastle Central Station is the first station in the world to benefit from having a CityTree! Part of LNER’s innovation programme, LNER FutureLabs, Newcastle’s CityTree combines the natural ability of living moss to bind fine dust and remove it from the air with cutting edge technology. We've crunched the numbers to learn that the CityTree has been designed to clean, cool and humidify 3,500 m³ of air each hour - that's the equivalent to the breathing volume of 7,000 people at any one point! Standing tall in the centre of one of the UK’s busiest transport hubs, the eye-catching three-metre high moss structure helps to convert to natural biomass that is then digested by the moss. It’s a special, super-technical and beautiful arrival at Newcastle Central Station that’ll be in-situ for 12 weeks - check it out next time you’re arriving in the city! lner.co.uk

The new building will include a living green roof as well as a private terrace garden on each floor. We can't wait to see this one take shape! facebook.com/bjarke.ingels.group

ANCIENT ARTEFACT UNEARTHED AT BANK HOUSE DEVELOPMENT

Around 500 years ago in Newcastle it seems that somebody dropped a rather fine drinking tankard into a pit after a heavy night out on some seriously strong ale! Work on the Bank House project came to a sudden stop recently and it wasn’t for a burst pipe, it was because archeologists had unearthed a 16th century drinking tankard following extensive investigations! It’s given researchers an invaluable insight into the growth of Pilgrim Street as an early main route into medieval Newcastle and it’s now believed that this area held many inns and shops which would have catered for the pilgrims. How fascinating!

THE FRENCH OVEN

Yeah, sourdoughs are cool and taste unbelievable as they are, but have you sampled The French Oven’s beetroot sourdough? A mooch over to the Grainger Market is all it takes to get your mitts on giant elliptical loaves that have been kneaded with diced beetroot, before being covered in flour and oven-baked until that oh-so golden crust forms. They’re just £2.80 per loaf and they taste absolutely out-of-this-world with a charcuterie board and a hoppy beer. A teatime treat for the connoisseurs out there! frenchoven.co.uk

Loads of lovely bread can be found around the clock at Pink Lane Bakery in the city centre. A beautiful, artisan bakery that prides itself on baking everything fresh on site, here you’ll find crusty sourdough baguettes, a Tyne Bridge wheat and rye sourdough, as well as their ‘new-ish’ addition to a lush sourdough selection featuring flax, chia and soaked soybeans that results in the best toast ever! This is not just any bread and butter combo you get at home, no, far from it, it’s a Kenny Atkinson, House of Tides serving that’ll transport you to a different culinary planet. Espresso Excellence with

Mike Hesketh

WE LOVE A GOOD COFFEE, WHO DOESN’T? BUT WHAT WE LOVE JUST A LITTLE BIT MORE IS A GOOD ESPRESSO MARTINI.

martini that we reduce with a bottle of Broon down into a syrup and infuse into our espresso to form a discrete Geordie percolator. Finally, how much coffee is too much coffee? Well they say the most dangerous drinking game is seeing how long you can go without coffee - not that I ever plan on trying that. As long as the coffee is being used to create our delicious cocktails then we can't get enough!

Thankfully, Horticulture shares our love for espresso martinis and boasts ‘the biggest espresso martini menu in the world’. That’s right, right here in the Toon we’re leading the way in pioneering the espresso martini! We caught up with Horticulture’s Mike Hesketh to chat about the inspiration behind his epic espresso martini menu and learn more about his exclusive Summer in the City cocktail inspired by our dazzling programme... What inspired you to create such a huge coffee cocktail menu? In all honesty, I could see the huge popularity of the espresso martini rising rapidly and realised it's actually the 2nd biggest selling cocktail in the UK. So

I opened my first cafe and with loving caffeine myself, it was only natural to find a way to create something unique for Horticulture. Myself and my team got to work on creating the world's biggest coffee cocktail menu selection which we call "percolators"! This combines 40 espresso martinis and 10 further coffee cocktails, 50 in total, 100 if you decaf each one, but who would do such a thing?! What's the most popular coffeebased drink on the menu and why do you think that is? It has to be the OG; the classic is the absolute don of all cocktails! However, a close second is the salted caramel flavour and in third, I'd say is the biscoff espresso martini. Why are they so popular? It's simple; they taste delicious, are super boozy and keep you perky for the rest of the day and night. What's your personal favourite and why? My personal favourite is either the cereal milk coffee cocktail, which we soak cornflakes in milk and strain to get that authentic cereal flavour, or our Newcastle Brown Ale espresso

Introducing the Summer in the City special cocktail! After being captivated by Mike’s mastery of all things espresso, we challenged him to create a Summer In The City themed cocktail taking inspiration from our colourful installations around the city centre. In a matter of hours, the Summer in the City, inspired by NE1's city-wide programme was born. It features a refreshing lemon meringue percolator, zesty lemon Malfy gin, creamy Mozart White, fresh espresso, vodka and a finishing of lemon zest to make this lush NE1-inspired tipple. It's the perfect refreshment after a day spent in the Toon!

NE1 REVIEWS:

Royal Blood THE LONG-AWAITED RETURN OF LIVE MUSIC ROLLED INTO NE1 AND TORE THE HOUSE DOWN AT O2 ACADEMY NEWCASTLE…

The anticipation inside the O2 Academy Newcastle is palpable. After what seems like an eternity, the bright lights are shining again, drinks are flowing, mosh-pits are back and the stage is rockin’ and rollin’ with Royal Blood showcasing why they’re one of the biggest names in music. Entry to the venue is simple, straightforward and painless. It’s advised to arrive early as yes, there will be queues

with more stringent checks underway, but fear not - the lovely staff at O2 Academy have you covered and are on hand to answer your burning questions and most importantly, keep you and fellow gig-goers safe. Following a burst up the stairs and a swift entrance into the hall, we’re greeted by a cacophony of heavyguitar riffs. A frantic check of the watch allays our fear that we’ve missed the start of Royal Blood when in fact, it’s the bombastic sounds of Brighton psych-rockers, Tigercub. They’re supporting Royal Blood on their exclusive date in the Toon and judging by the quality of music on show from this tightly-knit four piece in their quick-fire set, support slots will soon be a thing of the past. Then the moment we’ve all craved for 18 months. The venue darkens, the high-pitched shrieks burst out to every corner of the hall and a bombardment of strobe lighting angles richotets out over the crowd. The interval is over live music has returned to the stage. Fuzz-laden bass-notes rocket out from Mike Kerr’s Fender four-string as the opening riff of Typhoons sends the O2 Academy into an early mosh-pit. From the word go - every riff, every high-hat clink from Ben Thatcher and falsetto note is performed with style and charisma. It’s no surprise given that Royal Blood are one of the biggest live acts in the world. By the time this dynamic duo begin churning out solid-gold crowd pleasers, the Toon has descended into a frenetic mosh-pit that has teenagers arm-in-arm with middle aged women, screaming every word back as the drinks flow and pearly whites show. A timely reminder that brilliant music

brings people of all shapes, sizes and creeds together in a sweaty, jubilant mess. A swift encore arrives in Figure It Out, but frankly, Mike Kerr could be singing the Blaydon Races at this point - 2,000 Geordies are in the palm of their hands following one of the best live-shows to touch down in Newcastle. The O2 Academy roof has

well and truly been sent into orbit. With standout names such as Ellie Goulding, Frank Carter & The Rattlesnakes, and The Libertines all whistling into the Toon over the coming weeks, it’s fair to say that live music is back, better than ever and it’s going nowhere soon. Happy gigging Newcastle - it’s good to be back… academymusicgroup.com
