ISSN 2516-7839

This time last year we were suffering a long winter of pandemic discontent with our restaurants destined to remain shut until the spring. When we did finally open the great British dining public returned in droves and for that we are eternally grateful. Pent-up demand for socialising with friends and family helped create a steady stream of business which continued right through to the festive season. OK, our nerves were tested by new variants but we’ve learnt to fight each day as it comes. And so far we have survived. And whilst the short cold gloomy days seem set to stay for a bit longer, there is some hope on the horizon - something to warm the cockles of any serious gourmand’s stomach. Yes, it’s that time of year again - NE1 Restaurant Week is back! Time to bag yourself a culinary bargain and dine in one or two of those fancy restaurants you always wanted to visit but never thought you could. This is the time us humble restaurateurs slash our prices and throw open our doors to the hungry, and greedy! It’s been a torrid year for all us in hospitality but we’ve managed to survive so time for us to say a heartfelt thank you and give a little back. Now in its 12th year, there’s a dazzling array of dining choices with some of the Toon’s best eateries offering a cornucopia of dining experiences for £10, £15 or £20 which, let’s face it, is an absolute bargain. So what’s not to like? Get yourself booked-in and dine like a king… or queen! ANDY HOOK OWNER, BLACKFRIARS AND DOBSON & PARNELL

NE1’S LASER LIGHT CITY LIT UP NEW YEAR’S EVE!

What a great three days we had welcoming in 2022 with our incredible Laser Light City installation! Delivered by BAFTA-award winning artist Seb Lee-Delisle and commissioned by NE1 with Newcastle City Council, these amazing beams of light were mounted all around the city. On the Tyne Bridge, BALTIC, Sage Gateshead, Malmaison, Civic Centre and Hadrian’s Tower, lasers shot up into the city and could be seen for miles around. The best part is, you could control the lasers yourself! Did you take your turn and swing the lasers across the Tyne whilst thousands watched on? This one-of-a-kind celebration was a great opportunity for families and friends to gather together and get involved. We just want to say a huge thank you to the venues who hosted our incredible display and to those who took part and watched - the atmosphere across the three days was incredible and we really hope you enjoyed it!

KHAI KHAI

Intimate Indian Magic

NE1 VISITED KHAI KHAI, THE NEW INDIAN RESTAURANT ON QUEEN STREET THAT’S COMBINING TRADITIONAL COOKING TECHNIQUES WITH MODERN INGREDIENTS TO CREATE A MELTING POT OF EXQUISITE FLAVOURS AND INDIAN AUTHENTICITY. Both bubbling pots of goodness provide a joyous tasting experience that oozes plenty of aromatic vibes and standout Indian flavours. The smokiness of chicken tikka and classic tandoori marinade topped with zesty herb chutney serves up a moreish bite, while the braised boneless lamb joint is nestled in a melting pot of fresh ginger and dry-roasted spices to create a rich and truly outstanding dish!
