Black History Month 1-30 OCTOBER WE’RE CELEBRATING BLACK HISTORY MONTH THIS ISSUE, BY CHAMPIONING THE PEOPLE AND PLACES THAT HAVE INFLUENCED OUR CITY OVER THE COURSE OF HISTORY. GIVEN THAT THIS YEAR'S THEME IS ASKING US ALL TO DIG DEEPER, LOOK CLOSER AND THINK BIGGER, HERE'S HOW WE'RE CHAMPIONING BLACK HISTORY MONTH IN NE1 THIS OCTOBER…

Dig deeper into the past >>

Tyne Concert Hall also welcomed the Female Christi Minstrels; seven young black women who arrived in Newcastle in 1860 and they had the audience rolling in their top hats with their spicy mix of political jokes and satirical takes on the UK!

1865 NEWCASTLE DAILY

CHRONICLE SPEAKS OUT

Aiming to tackle the abhorrent racism that had entrenched the UK, a number of journalists working for the Newcastle Daily Chronicle (today's Evening Chronicle) spoke out against hostility towards black people with a published message on the front cover which read: “We deplore the prejudice against colour, and we are severely censorious towards those who exhibit it”.

Arthur Wharton became the world’s first professional black footballer following his registration at the prestigious Newcastle and District team as a goalkeeper. Legend has it that Arthur was a rather eccentric player (aren’t all goalkeepers!), and would wait in a crouching position at the side of the goal before rushing out to save the ball when the opposition team attacked!

NEWCASTLE JOINS THE FIGHT FOR CIVIL RIGHTS

1967 DR MARTIN

LUTHER KING JR. RECEIVES HONORARY DOCTORATE FROM NEWCASTLE UNIVERSITY

1846 FREDERICK DOUGLASS CHANGES THE WORLD

One of the most famous intellectuals of his time, Frederick Douglass was a pioneering individual born into slavery around 1818 in Maryland, USA, who developed an unbreakable bond with Newcastle. His story is incredible; Douglass escaped from slavery and went on to educate Newcastle and the UK about the brutalities he and many others had faced. Douglass raised money to help those in slavery legally purchase themselves or family members and was also pivotal in helping people safely settle and work here in the Toon. In 1846, local Geordies Anna Richardson and her sister-in-law, Ellen, raised £150 to pay for his legal freedom. At the time, Newcastle was one of the leading cities campaigning for reform, with anti-slavery lectures held in the city centre regularly. Douglass himself gave two addresses to meetings in Newcastle in what were seminal moments for the city. Frederick's legacy lives on in NE1 to this day in the form of Newcastle University's Frederick Douglass Centre! A stunning city centre space that features a 750-seat

auditorium, modern lecture theatre and a range of seminar rooms and exhibition spaces over several floors. The centre was officially opened by Kenneth B Morris Jr, a direct descendant of Douglass, in 2019!

1861 THE TYNE CONCERT HALL CELEBRATES BLACK ARTISTS

You probably pass it every day on your way to work or when you’re on the hunt for a lunchtime feed, but did you know that the Tyne Concert Hall on Nelson Street, next to The Alchemist, was once a principal hub for working-class entertainment and a popular culture venue that actively welcomed black artists to the stage? Originally built in 1838 for local people, the Tyne Concert Hall became a safe haven as Newcastle welcomed people from African and Caribbean communities to showcase their talent in a forward-thinking environment. In 1861 the Original African Opera Troupe arrived in the city to raise funds for Newcastle Infirmary at a charity benefit concert - the crowd and city loved their performance that much they returned in 1862 to sing extracts from Italian operas! And that's not all! The

1885 ARTHUR WHARTON JOINS NEWCASTLE AND DISTRICT AS WORLD’S FIRST PROFESSIONAL BLACK FOOTBALLER Newcastle welcomed a true sporting pioneer and trailblazer to the city during the late 19th century, as

On November 13, 1967, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. became a recipient of an Honorary Doctorate in Civil Law presented by the Chancellor and Vice-Chancellor of Newcastle University, the only University in the UK to offer Dr. King this honour during his lifetime. Following the award, Dr. King addressed the audience about his own work in the fight for civil rights and the progress made towards racial justice. His words at the time were in opposition to the racial prejudice that existed in culture, society and law.

They’ll be celebrating the recent release of their second album, Marlowe 2, when they arrive in NE1 - catch them live and see why there’s such a fuss about this dynamic duo. thecluny.com

Food & Drink FOR 2 SERVINGS, YOU NEED: 500g Chicken 3 onions, chopped 2 1/2 tsp oil 5 fresh curry leaves 1 tsp coriander seeds 2 1/2 tsp garlic and ginger puree blended with a pinch of salt and a little oil and water 1/2 tsp turmeric 1/2 tsp chilli powder 1/4 tsp garam masala 1 chilli if you want more heat 1 tomato 1/2 pint water 3 tbsp natural yoghurt 1 tsp tomato puree

NE1 Recipes: Sachin’s Chicken Sheerah

You’ve read all about the delights on offer across the Toon this October, now it’s time to create your very own National Curry Week masterpiece with a sumptuous recipe for the Get into Newcastle magazine from Sachin’s very own chef extraordinaire, Bob Arora! We just had to visit this iconic Toon institution on Forth Banks and ask Bob how he makes his famous Punjabi Chicken Sheerah (named after wor number 9 himself!). Get ready to make one of Newcastle's most celebrated curries from the comfort of your kitchen - we sure do treat you lovely readers!

A top Toon trick from Bob and Shearer... A puree of garlic and ginger helps to add some punch and it's worth getting hold of fresh curry leaves. These add a nice fragranced touch to the dish!

FOLLOW THIS METHOD FOR A GREAT RESULT

Heat the oil in a frying pan and add onion, garlic and ginger puree followed by the spices and gently cook down for five minutes. Add splashes of water if the mix looks too dry. You should have a thick sauce. Chop the tomato and add to the spice mixture and cook until it is soft and blended into the sauce. Add fresh chilli at this point if you like extra heat. Add cubes of diced chicken to the pan and cook on low heat, mixing until the chicken is cooked through and has taken on the colour of the spices and flavour. Remove from the heat. Mix the natural yoghurt and tomato puree. This needs to be added to the hot pan and stirred in – you should not heat the mixture now or the yoghurt will separate. Garnish with fresh coriander and serve immediately with rice and naan bread. sachins.co.uk

Forget Alan's 260 Premier League goals, we've heard that he counts Bob's stunning Chicken Sheerah as his biggest achievement to date! You'll have to excuse our dodgy jokes - it's not often that we get to shoe-horn a true Geordie legend into our mag!

It’s creeping up folks… Can you believe how soon it’ll be Christmas again?! A time for happiness, cheer, and of course gifts to our loved ones! Here at NE1 we know how much the people of Newcastle love to spread Geordie joy during the season of goodwill, so that’s why we reached out to our friends at the GNCH to make sure everyone knows how best to help them this December. For many children GNCH is a beacon of hope, supporting them in many ways whilst they’re receiving the care they need. Did you know, GNCH is one of the four largest Children’s hospitals in the UK? Annually 32,000 children attend as inpatients, 44,000 children visit the Paediatric Emergency Department, 150,000 children have outpatient appointments and 15,000 attend

as day cases. That’s almost a quarter of a million children! Now it may seem a little early, but as we all know, Santa is a man with a lot on his plate, so if you were

thinking of lending a hand and making a donation to the Great North Children’s Hospital this year we’ve got all the info you need to make sure it’s just perfect!

GIFTS

We know how generous you readers are and how eager you’ll be to help old Saint Nick deliver as many mint gifts as possible to the children, but the elves over at GNCH need to be careful about what they let into their amazing facility, so they’ve provided us with a handy dos and don'ts guide to ensure none of your lovely gifts get wasted, that’s the last thing anyone wants! All gifts need to be new and in original packaging please! Gifts should be unwrapped (you can provide wrapping if you wish!). Heads up! Gifts should be washable or wipeable! Although we’re certain the children would love to dive into a heap of chocolate, most patients sadly cannot enjoy them while they are in hospital. So, no edible gifts please! No second hand or used gifts please team, as important health guidelines have to be followed! IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO MAKE A GIFT DONATION please contact nuth. gnchchristmasdonations@nhs.net

How can I help Great North Children’s Hospital this festive period?

Donate >>

The most useful support you can give is by donating to GNCH’s festive fund which allows the hospital to fund festive cheer as well as innovative pieces of equipment and extras that enable a positive experience for young patients at this time of year.

NE1 checks in with Mul Draws

WE CAUGHT UP WITH THE MASTERMIND BEHIND THE MURALS TAKING OVER NEWCASTLE AS MUL REVEALS ALL IN A GET INTO NEWCASTLE EXCLUSIVE... Quirky, colourful and full of character, Mul’s murals have been bringing joy to the streets of Newcastle for a number of years now and they’ve led him to work on some incredible projects! In a recent collaboration with Unit 44, Mul used his signature groovy style to create a super immersive installation at Newcastle’s hottest new nightclub, The Lofts. Alongside that, he’s also worked his magic on a groundbreaking installation for National Recycle Week, creating a stunning mural on Pilgrim Street using CO2-absorbing paint! Despite this hectic schedule, Mul found the time to sit down with us for an exclusive interview... Tell us a little about yourself... I’m Mul, a local artist from Newcastle! People have grown to know my work from my disco-style characters that I’m painting across the walls of the city. I think the piece that people are probably aware of the most is the ‘Young Hearts Run Free’ mural in the Quayside area! How has Newcastle affected your creativity? Newcastle is an amazing city full of art and creative people. Our famous Geordie culture has influenced my style, my creative drive and definitely taught me that ‘shy bairns get nowt’! Tell us a little about the creative scene in Newcastle at the minute... Newcastle is blossoming! There are things happening all around us; events, shows and gigs, and it’s a really exciting time for the city. I’m proud to be a part of it. There is also a huge boom in independent businesses around here at the moment which is great to see. Tell us about your style? What do you enjoy the most about this particular art form? I call my style at the moment ‘Disco Style’; it’s fun, colourful, bouncy and reflects the music that I’m listening

to when I paint. I have quite a short attention span when it comes to making a piece, so I had to create something that would be bold and stand out… Do you have a favourite piece among your work? I guess it would be the ‘Young Hearts’ piece! It was the first time I painted those characters and opened the door to progress to where I am today. You recently launched a show with Unit44. Tell us all about that experience... It was incredible! It was my first ever capsule show alongside Unit44 where I showcased a whole new range of screen-prints, canvasses and never-before-seen merchandise. The opportunity to show my work to people in BALTIC 39 on High Bridge was a special moment for me… Shoutout to 3 NE1 indie businesses... Big love to the guys and girls at Market Shaker, shoutout to Laneway Coffee for constantly serving up the good stuff and last but not least, Dabbawal for knocking up some of the tastiest curry dishes in NE1! unit-44.com

NEW DANCERS IN NE1: CLUB A’GOGO >> IT’S TIME TO GET YOUR GLAD RAGS ON AND DANCE LIKE IT’S 1960 AT CLUB A’GOGO, NEWCASTLE’S BRAND-NEW MOD CLUB!

Inspired by the original Club a’Gogo, one of Newcastle’s most happening night spots in the swinging 60’s, husband and wife duo Paul & Julia Donnelly are bringing Mod culture back to life with regular pop-up events at The Town Wall and World Headquarters. NE1 spoke to the pair to find out more about their passion for this uniquely British subculture… What is it that inspired you to revive Club a’Gogo in 2021? Paul: Me and Julia met about 5 years ago and quickly discovered we were both into Mod culture. So, we started going to events around the country and discovering the scene. We found there were a lot of cliques at these sorts of events and we were having to travel to them too. That’s when we thought, why not just do our own thing here in Newcastle? We started doing them at the start of 2020, just before lockdown. In terms of the name, I knew quite a lot about the original club and I thought it’d be great to revive the Club a’Gogo name to keep the history alive in the city. What events have you got coming up in the near future? Julia: We’ve got our Friday night events at The Basement in The Town Wall, they’re called The Downbeat Club. We’re trying to capture an authentic 1960’s Mod club experience so you’ve got to dress smart, but we’re super inclusive and we’ve always got a really diverse range of people coming down to enjoy the tunes. You can come to those on the 8th and 22nd of October. Then we’re holding a couple of bigger events at World Headquarters called Gimme Shelter. Those ones will be more of an indie disco, with live music, DJ sets and cool art on show from local artists! They’re coming up on the 30th October and 27th November. For someone that’s not been to a Mod club before, what’s it all about? Julia: First and foremost it’s about the music. And the music that we play has a very fast tempo. You walk in and you just wanna dance! Like Paul said, sometimes it can feel a bit clique-like at other events like this, but we don’t want that, we’re very welcoming of anyone. Sometimes we’ve got people coming on their own and if that’s the case I introduce them to everyone and it feels like a family, because everyone gets to know each other. It’s a lovely atmosphere that I feel is rare at clubs nowadays. Finally, if people are thinking about coming to an event but they’ve never dipped their toes into Mod culture before, what would you say to them? Julia: We’d say come along! Me and Paul will make you feel completely welcome, we’re actively wanting new people to come along and experience the music for the first time. I’m sure they’ll love it. Paul: I play the music, so Jools will greet you, make you feel totally welcome. Just come and I guarantee you’ll have a good time, you’ll be safe, you’ll have a laugh. Just come and have a bit of craic! Find out more about Club a’Gogo at clubagogo.co.uk

PROFILE FEATURE

It seems our city has always been full of bright sparks! Did you know that The Lit & Phil Library was the first public space in the world to be lit by electric lighting? Let's take a trip back to the 19th century as we shine a light on a captivating bulb of NE1 history... It's 1880, the weather is bleak and as soon as night falls, the world goes dark. North East native and exceptional engineer, Joseph Swan is on a mission to change all this and has been beavering away in his workshop trying to create a light source to illuminate homes and public spaces. Little did he know that his work to create a glass-encased, delicate paper filament is about to change the world! Joseph arrives in the Toon for a special lecture at The Lit & Phil Library on 20 October 1880. It seemed to be a usual gathering for audience members as gas jets and oil lamps lit up the lecture theatre. That was until Joseph dimmed the lamps and shone 20 electric lights to awestruck onlookers. The lecture was so ground-breaking that Swan was asked to light the whole of Mosley Street, for one night, with his incredible new creation! Shortly after, The Swan Electric Light Company began installing light bulbs across England as the Toon triumphed in gifting the world a ground-breaking revelation. Next time you’re out and about, enjoying the beautiful interior of one of NE1's prettiest businesses, take a moment to think just how incredible it would have been to see a room illuminated with electric light for the very first time. Incredible! litandphil.org.uk
