TO CELEBRATE AFTERNOON TEA WEEK, HERE’S SOME GREAT SPOTS IN THE TOON WHERE YOU CAN GET YOUR TEA ON… GREAT BRITISH CUPCAKERY

CAFÉ 21 AT FENWICK

Sometimes simplicity is key when it comes to the perfect afternoon tea so why fix something that isn't broken? Café 21 at Fenwick are lovers of tradition and they’ve put together a picture perfect British afternoon tea experience that ticks all the boxes for us! You’ve got a range of incredibly fluffy sandwiches with delectable fillings, lush pastries and beautiful tea. Time to pop a bottle and pour a glass! cafe21fenwick.co.uk

MARCO PIERRE WHITE

Whether it’s a quick tea-filled catch-up or an afternoon of bubbly you’re after, Marco Pierre White’s selection of mouthwatering traditional sandwiches, sweet pastries and scones are sure to hit the spot. COLONEL PORTERS

LEILA LILY'S

The idea of a traditional afternoon tea can often conjure thoughts of Victorian elegance and style. Obviously the modern afternoon tea doesn’t require you to turn up in a puffy dress or equipped with a monocle, but at Leila Lily’s they’re keeping that tradition of elegant afternoon dining alive. This lush establishment is known for its modern take on this quintessentially British tradition, offering options like tender Teriyaki Chicken Skewers and a beautifully creamy blue cheese and broccoli quiche rather than sandwiches. They’ve still got a selection of scones and other classic pastries on offer too, but there’s also the raspberry, milk chocolate & pistachio cream puff if you’re feeling a little more adventurous. Whether you’re choosing classic or modern, you’ve chosen style when you go to Leila Lily’s. leilalilys.co.uk

The best thing about Colonel Porters is that they unashamedly do things their own way. They love to put twists on classics and bring some of their unique style to everything they serve and we’re happy to report their afternoon tea experience is no different. Traditional this is not. Porter’s Tipsy Tea gives you the choice of two exciting alcohol infused teapots - the rum based ‘Cheeky Tea-ki’ and the ‘More Gin Vicar?’. This afternoon tea is in a world of its own and we can’t get enough. So, if you’re looking for a unique afternoon tea experience that’ll leave you giddy, let Colonel Porters be your first port of call - chin chin! colonelporters.co.uk

A Spanish Sensación

ANOTHER DAY IN THE TOON, ANOTHER FOODIE PILGRIMAGE TO ONE OF THE NE1'S STUNNING EATERIES! NE1 FOLLOWS THE SCENT OVER TO DEAN STREET TO KALTUR WINE BAR & RESTAURANT FOR A TRUE TASTE OF AUTHENTIC SPANISH CUISINE…

Nestled in a cosy basement site on one of Newcastle’s principal streets, Kaltur Wine Bar & Restaurant is arguably one of the Toon’s best-kept foodie secrets. Featuring a new-look menu from owner Avencio and his team, Kaltur are serving up some of the finest, most-authentic Spanish food you could possibly hope to find in the North. The restaurant is an enticing and welcoming place to be; think exposed, concrete walls finished with eyepleasing decor. There's a wall of wine made up of rich reds from La Rioja and zesty whites from the La Mancha regions and there's tons of ambient lighting that perfectly highlights all the features of this beautiful restaurant. It’s graceful, it’s stylish and incredibly inviting. Kaltur offers a sumptuous space to enjoy balmy afternoons or serene summer evenings - all in the hands of some of the best hospitality in the Toon. With our nostrils gleefully embracing the wall of aromatic spices upon our arrival, we're swifty shown to our seats

finished with cuttlefish ink to create a stunning artform that wouldn’t look out of place at an avant garde exhibition at the BALTIC! With belts creaking and shirts quickly becoming untucked, the oh-so tender black tempura cod (£15) comes into view. It’s hard to find adjectives for this particular dish; the cod loin is encased with cuttlefish ink batter and features creamy aioli, pea puree, triple cooked baby potatoes, buttery asparagus, cherry tomato and granadina salsa simply stunning! The afternoon is rounded off with

caramelised apple and Goat's cheese mille-feuille (£10.75) with onion confit, a trail of pistachio and Pedro Ximenez sherry reduction sauce. Although we’re close to bursting at this point, there’s no way we’re missing out on the chance to sample this stunner! With both restaurants now open (there’s a cosy Kaltur hangout on High Bridge too!) and ready to welcome in countless Geordies ready for a true taste of Spain this summer, Kaltur is the place to head for a special date night or catch-up with friends over scintillating Spanish cuisine. kalturrestaurant.co.uk

where it is explained that five or six tapas dishes between us should fill our bellies and secondly, give us a pretty good all-round glimpse into the varying delicacies being served up from the kitchen. First to arrive is the melt-in-your-mouth Iberico pork cheek (£10.55). This particular plate of meat magic falls apart with very little prompting and is supported by a smooth cinnamon sauce, celeriac puree and gorgeous parsnip crisps. No sooner had we finished digesting (both mentally and physically) the opening dish, a steaming pot of aromatic garlic king prawns (£12.50) and crunchy sourdough bread drenched in Kaltur’s home-brew virgin olive oil takes centre stage - it’s sublime! The fish fancy continues shortly after as Galician octopus (£18) makes a showstopping appearance. Garnished with soy, ginger, rosemary, mashed potato and shredded Iberico ham, it’s a larger dish that’s been beautifully

We caught up with size? Newcastle Manager Ross Moore to chat through city life on Grainger Street…

SIZE? NEWCASTLE ARE ONE OF THE LATEST GLOBAL BRANDS TO TOUCH DOWN IN NEWCASTLE CITY CENTRE AND DESPITE THE OBVIOUS CHALLENGES OF THE PAST YEAR, THESE FOOTWEAR AFICIONADOS HAVE CEMENTED THEMSELVES AS A KEY FIGURE IN NEWCASTLE’S VIBRANT FASHION SCENE.

SETTLING INTO NE1 >> "The store has settled into the area amazingly despite COVID trying its best to derail the fun. We finally managed to open our doors in early December 2020 and operated for just over three weeks before the country again went into lockdown after Christmas. Myself and my management team worked throughout the third lockdown to ensure the store was in the best place possible with the best stock ready to open again in mid-April. Our opening day was a huge success as we had built up a lot of limited, sought-after products and people flocked to get their hands on them! I can speak for all of us when I say we are passionate about representing size? and passionate about trainers and the new city we live in. Now that we've had 11 successful weeks since reopening, the store continues to go from strength to strength and this area of the city is perfect for us to build our strong footing in Newcastle’s vibrant fashion scene."

A WOW EURO 2020 WINDOW DISPLAY >> “The EURO 2020 inspired window came about from a collaboration to celebrate the Euros between size? and Art Of Football with the help of Elroy the artist! Five stores across the UK were specially selected to have the installation and each location was based on an iconic player in UK football. The installation took about 6 hours and was in place throughout the duration of the football action. For ourselves, we had the much-loved Gazza-inspired window, our Manchester store celebrated Foden and Rashford, Carnaby Street showcased Harry Kane, whereas Glasgow and Cardiff paid tribute to Andy Robertson and Gareth Bale with super-striking murals.”

COMMUNITY IS KEY >> “We have built great relationships with local stores such as END., The Hoi Polloi and also numerous amazing places to eat in and around the Grainger Market and beyond. Our relationship with the guys at END. I feel is key. We’ve also struck up a warm relationship with the team at Waceland, which all comes together nicely to conjure up that community feel around our little area of the city that’s dedicated to forward-thinking streetwear. We also run a dedicated Instagram account which we use to show the latest products and speak with our customers. You’ll often find our customers being engaged outside of ‘business hours’ which we feel adds to the experience. As a Tier 1 store, we have access to all of the sought-after releases and we often run ‘Chance to Buy’ competitions or communicate detailed release information to ensure local customers bag the product they're after. The plan for the future is to expand our reach and continue to build those relationships with our community."
