Festival season is on the horizon and the team at This Is Tomorrow have pulled it out of the bag with a line-up for the ages! The Toon’s premier indie fest is rocking back into Exhibition Park on 17, 18 and 19 September this year and soon the likes of Dermot Kennedy, Gerry Cinnamon and Newcastle icon Sam Fender will be strutting their stuff and striking many a chord with thousands of festival goers. If that wasn’t enough to whet your appetite, This Is Tomorrow also welcomes rap king Bugzy Malone to the Toon stage on Friday 17, with Fontaines D.C. serving up a visceral punk treat on Sunday 19 and indie icons, The Kooks, serenading us all with their 00s belters. All of that, plus exclusive sets from rising punk star Billy Nomates and a very special guest appearance from North East native, Nadine Shah. Can you imagine the scenes as Sam belts out Hypersonic Missiles in front of thousands of smiling Geordies as the sun sets and the crowd goes wild. LOFTY HEIGHTS AT ROOF THIRTY NINE, FENWICK NEWCASTLE!

It seems as though Newcastle is becoming the al fresco capital of the world given the number of pavement cafés and rooftop terraces we’ve seen popping up in recent weeks! We're delighted to see that the team at Fenwick are taking al fresco dining up a notch this summer with the launch of a brand-new rooftop restaurant, Roof Thirty Nine! An incredible new development for this iconic name in the city, Roof Thirty Nine is up and running on the never-before-seen fourth floor of the much-loved department store overlooking Northumberland Street. The restaurant and bar is situated at the very heart (and height) of the city with an astounding aspect looking across the city centre towards the Quayside and Newcastle's iconic bridges. What's the score with this new development from Fenwick then? Well, Roof Thirty Nine celebrates the very best of British summertime, from fragrant herbs and flowery dishes, to a charcoal-fired menu and bespoke cocktails muddled with Fenwick’s homegrown botanicals. Visitors will be able to choose from a delectable menu of classic dishes including grilled meats, fish and vegetables all cooked over hot coals, accompanied by beautiful seasonal salads and side dishes. A new foodie icon in the city - make sure you check it out this summer! fenwick.co.uk/roof39

SABAS HAVE A NEW SUN-SPOT!

It’s all going down on the waterfront this summer! If you've been soaking up the sun on the Quayside recently, the eagle-eyed amongst you may have noticed that Signor and Sabatini have merged to create a sparkling new drinking and dining destination - Sabas! Bringing indulgent Italian dining to the banks of the River Tyne, it's a go-to spot for a sunshine feast with colourful cocktails to match! Expect to enjoy seriously outstanding, tapas-style dishes and delightful wines and cocktails as these two hospitality gurus join forces to bring something truly unique to the city. It's a place to experience Italian tapas - or ‘Cicchetti’ as it’s known in Italy - along with lush drinks in a relaxed and chilled, al fresco environment. The perfect way to spend your weekend... think tasty nibbles, hand-crafted cocktails and some pretty special views overlooking the Tyne - it’s a match made in heaven. sabas.co.uk

MAGPYE NESTS DOWN IN GRAINGER MARKET...

The Toon’s pie purveyors have flown the nest and they’ve set up shop inside our beautiful Grainger Market. Having stocked their lush range at Fenwick for the past few months, Magpye are now open in their brand new, 100% Plant Powered Pie House & Deli in the Grainger Market! Here you’ll be able to get your mits on their hand-crafted, deluxe vegan pies (with loads of unique takes on the British classics) as well as vegan 'meats', dairy alternatives, plant-based cheeses and their 'bake at home' pie range. Two Magpye spots in Toon certainly gives us a lot of joy! facebook.com/magpyencl

NEW IN NE1

TIME FOR BOHEMIAN BRILLIANCE

Mention those three special words and we’re all ears this summer! Mezzanine... outdoor... terrace! Newcastle will soon be welcoming another beautiful new venue to the city centre, and if the sound of a contemporary new bar pumping epic music out over a mezzanine club and outdoor terrace doesn't get you going, then we're not sure what will! Our friends at Perdu are relaunching this summer as the all-new Bohemia; a new afterhours venue that combines style, cool art and quality music all in one swanky space. It promises to be glitzy and glamorous, so make sure you keep your eyes peeled for their special launch event pencilled in for 26 June. See you there! facebook.com/bohemianewcastle

GET TO KNOW YANA ACTIVE...

North East natives and dynamic sister act, Charlotte and Sophie Wilson, were invited by John Lewis to set up their second YANA Active pop-up shop right in the middle of one of the city's biggest department stores! A British-built activewear brand that combines comfort, performance and high-end style to maximum effect, YANA Active rolled into Toon on 31 May and boy did they make their mark. Shoppers and passers-by were treated to a beautiful range of unique activewear pieces made from recycled fabrics and various elements manufactured in facilities using renewable energy. Their aim is to empower their tribe of ‘Everyday Warriors’, enhance the concept of multi-functional and fashionable activewear and supply shoppers with grade-A quality kit to help pursue fitness goals. Stay tuned on their socials for more updates and collaborations in the coming weeks. yanaactive.co.uk

£30M LUXURY HOTEL WITH ROOFTOP BAR AND POOL GETS THE GREEN LIGHT!

The generational developments just keep on coming to our beautiful city! We’re buzzing to bring you the exclusive news that our friends at The Malhotra Group PLC have been given the green light from Newcastle City Council to radically transform our city centre’s hospitality and culture offering in an eye-watering £30m scheme! Incredible news right? Well, get comfortable, here’s some of they key details of the project: When completed, this incredible site will be home to a luxury 120 bedroom hotel, cool retail outlets, a rooftop bar with an outdoor swimming pool (hello!), a new nightclub, as well as a number of restaurants and a health club too! The state-of-the-art plans will see the refurbishment and alteration of a number of Grade II listed buildings, along with the creation of new extensions to existing buildings across a 100,000 sq feet development around Grey Street, Mosley Street and the Cloth Market. With the bold £50m vision for our retail core shaping up nicely, the astounding work going on at Pilgrim Street and this beautiful new vision coming to the city, just imagine how glorious Newcastle will be looking in the coming years!

ANYONE FOR COOL COCKTAILS AND SUMMER VIBES IN AN ICONIC SPOT?

We don’t know another city in the world where it’s possible to sip fancy cocktails between two iconic buildings dating as far back as the 10th century - but here we are! Our friends down at Empress Bar have just announced a new sun-trap nestled between the Cathedral and Newcastle Castle, and they're calling it The Garden of Empress! This hidden gem has taken to the streets this summer, welcoming townsfolk from all over the North East to live it up outdoors. The new place to visit if you’re after delicious drinks, mega vibes and cool tunes in a gorgeous surrounding... empressbar.co.uk

TACO TIME AT THE CAMERA SHOP...

The oh-so cool team at The Camera Shop just keep on serving up delight after delight! As the sunshine lights up their new outdoor area on Collingwood Street, we’ve recently learned that they’re serving up some tremendous tacos to the Toon every Friday evening from 5:30pm until they sell out! So what’s on the menu then? Well, you can get your mitts on slow-cooked belly pork or roasted chipotle cauliflower that’s been loaded with pico de gallo and served on fresh corn tortillas. One of the Toon’s most-loved spots when it comes to fresh and healthy food (their freshly baked jacket potatoes are a particular lunchtime highlight, if you manage to get your hands on one!), be sure to check them out next time you’re in the city. Camerashopnewcastle.com

HARRISON FORD TOUCHES DOWN AT KHAI KHAI!

Talk about a star studded lunch! The brilliant Khai Khai team must have woken up thinking another regular day serving up delicious Indian food to hungry patrons was on the cards, that was until Millennium Falcon commander, Indiana Jones actor and Hollywood icon, Harrison Ford, walked in through the front door for a spot of lunch! The reason for his visit? Well apart from checking out the greatest city in the world (obviously!) and wanting to tuck into some of the finest cuisine in the city, the big screen are currently in the North East filming the fifth installment of Indiana Jones and they’re using a number of locations across our stunning region. Wonder if they’ll name the new film Indiana Jones and The Temple of Toon? facebook.com/khaikhaincl

CELEBRATING NE1...

The faces of NE1 CELEBRATING OUR MILESTONE ISSUE WITH THE PEOPLE THAT MAKE NE1 SO SPECIAL. HERE'S WHAT YOU HAD TO SAY ABOUT OUR LOVELY MAGAZINE AND THE WORK WE DO IN THE CITY...

NAME: Lois Bell MY CONNECTION TO THE CITY: Creative Director - Bumbl WHY I LOVE THE NE1 MAGAZINE... “From the latest in hospitality and notable exhibitions, to the best independents to support, NE1 discovers and distils the very best of the local area into its magazine pages to champion our city. As a marketing agency, with many independent and local clients of our own, we understand the value of supporting them through these difficult times. And, after a year that has thrown so many of the small businesses which give Newcastle its charm into question, we love to see NE1 also using its platforms and events to reconnect them with the local community, particularly at a time when supporting each other has never been so vital.”

NAME: Sean Gerrie MY CONNECTION TO THE CITY: Business Director UpSide Down Presents WHY I LOVE THE NE1 MAGAZINE... “NE1 have been invaluable throughout the years that we have grown our small independent gift and souvenir business at the bottom of Dean Street. From the practical assistance of the Clean Team and Rangers, to the marketing and events, the NE1 magazine has brilliantly showcased events in a creatively clever and fresh way, always up to date with current happenings.”

NAME: Steve Chapman MY CONNECTION TO THE CITY: Director & Founder - The Hoi Polloi WHY I LOVE THE NE1 MAGAZINE... “I've been lucky enough to be able to use the NE1 magazine from both sides. The thing that stood out for me was the attention to detail, they weren't just promoting the big obvious openings or the bigger companies, it felt like they really went out their way to find cool experiences, niche companies and truly were supporting local businesses. Since setting up The Hoi Polloi, NE1 was the first publication I wanted to work with, we wanted to reach their readership who clearly care about quality of service and value great new things happening in this wonderful city. I am pleased to say we got great traction from our opening piece and saw bums on seats directly from the article. We have a great relationship with the magazine and look forward to continuing to work together as The Hoi Polloi grows. Keep up the good work guys!”

NAME: Mike Hesketh MY CONNECTION TO THE CITY: Founder & Director Horticulture WHY I LOVE THE NE1 MAGAZINE... “NE1 has not only been a great voice for the city centre businesses over this past year, often publicly reflecting our circumstances and feelings over the pandemic thus voicing them to the relevant powers in control that can have a positive effect on our businesses. They’ve also watched over Horticulture over lockdown doing walk-bys to check everything is OK during those somewhat apocalyptic days and nights which was a lovely touch, but mostly the marketing and the events they do to encourage visitors to the city centre is fantastic, and will be hugely needed the next year and beyond.”

CELEBRATING NE1...

NAME: Imran Khaliq MY CONNECTION TO THE CITY: Director - Gainford Group (The Vermont Hotel, Livello, Aveika, The County Hotel) WHY I LOVE THE NE1 MAGAZINE... “NE1’s beloved fortnightly publication has been a vital tool for businesses both big and small across the city, especially during the past 14 months. An iconic magazine that showcases the very best of Newcastle, its people and the businesses that make up this wonderful city, the Get into Newcastle magazine a fantastic publication that is cleverly designed, brilliant to read and one that really stands out from the crowd and rises with distinction from other titles in the region. We’re extremely pleased with our fantastic relationship with the magazine and NE1 have been nothing but a benefit to Newcastle’s brilliant business ecosystem.”

NAME: Gillian Northey CONNECTION TO THE CITY: Media & Communications Officer Theatre Royal WHY I LOVE THE NE1 MAGAZINE... “Over a fifth of our annual audiences live within the Newcastle area and NE1 enables us to reach right into the heart of this crucial market. Encapsulating the very best of what is happening in and around our vibrant city in a fun, readable and entertaining format, NE1 is always one of our go-to titles to champion the exciting arts and culture scene in our region and spread the word about our varied programme of musicals, dramas, dance, family entertainment and opera.”

NAME: Terry Laybourne MY CONNECTION TO THE CITY: Director - 21 Hospitality Group (21 Newcastle, The Broad Chare, Saltwater Fish Company, Porterhouse Butcher and Grill) WHY I LOVE THE NE1 MAGAZINE... “The Get into Newcastle magazine has been a fantastic tool for the city and for our 21 Hospitality businesses. It is supportive, accessible and extremely responsive to any issues we as businesses, locals and visitors to the city may experience. Newcastle and its people are at the very heart of everything NE1 does, and throughout an incredibly challenging period, the team has done a fabulous job of carving through bureaucracy and helping the hospitality industry recover from the lockdown periods.” NAME: Keith Merrin MY CONNECTION TO THE CITY: Director - Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums WHY I LOVE THE NE1 MAGAZINE... “The Get into Newcastle magazine has always helped us to spread the word about our incredible museums and the huge role they play in Newcastle life.”

NAME: Dominic Munnelly MY CONNECTION TO THE CITY: Station Director - Metro Radio WHY I LOVE THE NE1 MAGAZINE... “We wouldn’t want Metro Radio to be based anywhere other than NE1. The Get Into Newcastle Magazine is something we always rely on to keep us, and our listeners, up to date with all the exciting developments and events happening in the centre of our great city. It’s been a pleasure for Metro Radio to have actively supported many of the NE1 events over the years and helped build awareness of the many attractions Newcastle offers to visitors.”

indulgent Italian menu as well as a stylish interior, Mediterranean dining and warm hospitality combine to create a world-class dining experience. Inspiring Italian cuisine > A stunning new restaurant that arrives into NE1's glistening hospitality scene with an incredible menu, Gino D’Acampo X Meliá promises to delight diners with their fabulous menus, feature Spritz bar and stand out al fresco terraces. Top quality, well-sourced, seasonal ingredients are used to showcase Gino’s favourite recipes and with an open view of the kitchen area, it’s clear to see that the team are on top of their game when serving up a taste of Emilia-Romagna or a dish straight from a rustic Neapolitan kitchen. Not to mention the first-class, attentive service on offer throughout the dinner service. It’s clear as day that staff take the utmost pride in the food coming out from the kitchen. Paired with a beautiful Sauvignon blanc (£28.75), Genovese pesto mussels and olives (£9.50) and fresh burrata accompanied with tomato and chilli salsa (£9.75) offer a glimpse into why this restaurant is fully booked on its first night. Refreshing, packed with flavour and generous in size for a starter, both these dishes act as a delicious segue as the main event

sizzles away in plain view. A taste of the Adriatic coast arrives to the table in the forn of sauteed garlic and chilli king prawns, as well as a delightful slice of prosecco toasted ciabatta (£24) provide the dining area with an aromatic scent of fresh chilli and beautiful garlic notes. While a rustic, burnt-orange pot of garlicky goodness bubbles away, the most (and let us be clear, the most!) tender steak fillet (£29.50) arrives at the table to steal the limelight. Grass fed, hand-selected and dripping in garlic butter, this bundle of joy is a melt-in-your-mouth sensation and a meal that’ll live long in the memory. This place really is the epitome of indulgent hospitality and it’s an addition befitting of Newcastle. Bellissimo!
