WITH THINGS RETURNING TO NORMALITY WE REVERT TO BRINGING YOU AN INTRODUCTION TO THE MAGAZINE FROM A MEMBER OF THE NE1 TEAM, STARTING THIS ISSUE WITH THE CHIEF EXECUTIVE.

Feeling a bit more optimistic about things? I am. First, the weather is improving - that always helps with the ‘feel good’ factor. Second, we seem (and I hope I don’t have to eat these words!) we are getting on top of the pandemic, the shops are open and indoor hospitality is making a welcome return this May. It’s great to see the efforts everyone in the city has been making to look after their customers; from a humble haircut to a new outfit and a meal out with friends - suddenly it’s possible again. And how we have missed it! This edition the NE1 magazine marks ‘back to normal’ - or maybe back to the ‘new normal’. So much has changed I don’t expect we’ll revert to pre-2020 for a while yet, if ever. To me this is not a problem - it’s an opportunity. It’s an opportunity to try out the new things and places that have come along, in many cases quite literally ‘popped up’, over the last few weeks and months. The city is so exciting just now and there’s much more yet to come over the summer. Between these pages is where you’ll find out about it - we’re looking forward to seeing you in town soon! Good news wine-lovers! Our friends at WC Newcastle have moved their reopening date forward, meaning we can get back to sipping the good stuff from 17 May! Even better, the team behind this quirky Bigg Market venue will be opening their doors seven days a week with a number of must-have deals to get stuck into. Spectacular plans to transform Newcastle University’s Stephenson Building into a world-class facility have been unveiled, and boy do they look good! Part of an eye-watering £69m transformation, this radical overhaul has been given the green light and will allow Newcastle University's Stephenson Building to become a leading School of Engineering for research, learning and engagement. A major milestone in the uni's rich history, this space-age building will also provide an exciting and diverse sustainability-driven curriculum within engineering for students across the globe. We can’t wait to see this one come on in the coming months. Stay tuned online for updates and snapshots! ncl.ac.uk

SALON SUSTAINABILITY

Huge shout out to the team at Green Ginger Hairdressing, who have recently picked up an award for sustainability following the salon’s mission to reduce its carbon footprint. During ‘Lockdown 3.0’ the Higham Place beauty business was recognised with ‘The Good Salon Guide Eco Award’ for ethical and sustainable salon practice. Not happy with the amount of waste going to landfill, Green Ginger searched for a solution and found 'The Green Salon Collective' - helping them to recycle 99% of their waste, including hair, foils, colour tubes, plastics, PPE and surplus chemicals. Massive congrats to all involved in the initiative! greenginger-newcastle.co.uk

ROOFTOP RIVIERA IN THE PIPELINE FOR FENWICK…

GREY STREET IS CALLING FOR METRO RADIO!

Our friends at Metro Radio are riding on a wave of positivity this May, recently announcing that they're taking their award-winning operation into the city centre and will be moving into state-of-the-art studios at the Grade II Listed Gainsborough House on Grey Street. This iconic building will now host the likes of Steve and Karen’s acclaimed weekday Breakfast Show direct from one of Newcastle’s most famous streets. They’ll also be the new neighbours of our artisan pizza chums, Pizza Punks - that would have been the deal clincher for us too! planetradio.co.uk/metro

We love visiting Fenwick’s Santa on the Rooftop at Christmas, and we’ve received fabulous news that our Fenwick friends have unveiled breathtaking plans to build on this success and open a permanent rooftop cafe, high above the city! That’s right, they're currently in the midst of exploring options to turn their fourth floor roof terrace into a brand new, modern eatery that will serve up some pretty spectacular views across the city centre. The terrace, facing out onto Northumberland Street, would not only have a canopy with a retractable awning, but they’d be serving up some of the finest cuisine in the city! Think Fenwick Food Hall with all the trimmings! It’s early and we’ve got our ears to the ground for more developments, but could you imagine an al fresco brunch and Fenwick shopping trip to finish? Dreamy! fenwick.co.uk

A TOTALLY TRANSFORMED MARCO POLO!

After 46 years of serving up delightful Italian dishes to hungry revellers in the Toon, Marco Polo decided to use the lockdown period as an opportunity to go under the knife and embark on a major revamp, and we’re delighted to learn that the restaurant has come out of the other side looking radiant and totally transformed for summer 2021! Set to reopen on 20 May, this Dean Street food palace has unveiled a striking geometric interior, Victorian-esque glass green tiling and a colour scheme that looks like a scene straight out of a Venetian palace. One to add to your must-visit lists this May! facebook.com/marcopolonewcastle

PERMISSION TO 'SCREAM' FOR PIZZA!

We're getting ready to move our pizza parties from the sofa to a sparkling new spot on the Quayside thanks to Scream For Pizza's exciting new venture! The slice masters have picked up the keys to their new home overlooking the Tyne, and we can't wait to see it unfold in the coming months! Having worked their way around the region for seven years as street food vendors, they've certainly got a good name when it comes to cheesy, doughy delights, and we can't wait to see what they've got in store at their new HQ. They'll be bringing New Yorkstyle slices and scrummy ice cream creations to the Quayside from summer. Stay tuned on social media for updates and lip-smackingly good snaps! screamforpizza.com

A WARM WELCOME TO BOBBY’S

We’re buzzing to welcome another new nightlife haunt to our party scene this summer and we’re pretty certain it is going to go down a treat once it's up and running! Ladies and gentleman, please give a warm Geordie welcome to Bobby’s! An all-inclusive spot opening up on the old site of Secrets Bar near the Life Science Centre, this is set to be the place to be if you’re after a lively sports bar and a late-night boogie! The team is busy installing a vibrant bar area complete with DJ booths for entertaining and everything else you can imagine for guaranteed good times in the Toon! Stay up to date on their progress by giving them some love on Facebook. See you soon guys! facebook.com/bobsncl

NE1’S GAMING SCENE LEVELS UP…

It’s all action over on Grey Street this summer! Having welcomed some beautiful pavement cafes, seen Metro Radio relocate to Gainsborough House and our Grey Street Gathering setting up camp as a glorious spot to relax and unwind, we’re buzzing to learn that this sparkling street in the centre of town will soon have a nostalgic gaming arcade joining the party! Taking over the basement beneath Zizzi’s Italian Restaurant, NQ64 is set to come armed with classic console games such as Pac Man, Space Invaders and Guitar Hero. The best bit? You can enjoy it all whilst catching up with friends over a drink or two! Who else is excited to get booed at by the Guitar Hero crowd because we’ve had a few too many? nq64.co.uk

Nightlife

MUSIC MOMENTS

Nightlife is near!

WITH ALL EYES SET ON 21 JUNE AS THE DATE WE CAN OFFICIALLY BURST THE BUBBLE AND GET BACK TO OUR BUZZY NIGHTLIFE, WE'RE LOOKING AHEAD AT SOME OF OUR CITY'S SPARKLING CLUBS, PUBS AND BARS...

Oh how we’ve missed donning our 'jeans and a nice top', catching up with friends on the dancefloor and busting out some incredibly suspect moves in one of the Toon’s world-class nightlife venues. They’re incredibly vital to our city’s afterhours offering, an intrinsic part of Newcastle’s fabric, and they have brought so many special memories with loved ones over the years - even if these memories are a little hazy! While some doors may have to remain closed longer than others, we’ve rounded up some of the nightlife venues we’re chomping at the bit to get back into...

COSMIC BALLROOM

Cosmic Ballroom is the hidden gem we all need in our social lives! Go here for some of the finest electronic beats in the Toon, featuring some of the world's most talented DJs and producers. It won't be long until we're back bopping along at this venue. Watch this space! facebook.com/cosmicballroom

FLARES

LIVELLO

Chic, contemporary and elegant, Livello is a soirée spot unlike anywhere else in the city. This stylish venue is one of Newcastle’s best-loved late-night spots and for good reason; think expertly crafted cocktails, grade A DJs pumping out fan favourites and dreamy, regularly updated interiors. The good news is Livello is back open, complete with an elegant courtyard suntrap inspired by the beach huts of Cabana - all you need to do is rally your gang and wind down your summer evenings with some of the Toon’s tastiest tipples and finest vibes. barlivello.co.uk

There's simply no better place to get your groove on and laugh the night away with loved ones as the cheesiest classics belt out over the speakers! Arguably the place to visit in NE1 if you’re keen on showcasing your dad dancing and weird living room routines, Flares’ is home to one of the city's biggest and brightest dancefloors. Keep an eye out for an opening date this summer - you really don’t want to miss the first evening back when Mr Brightside fires out over the speakers with a room full of smiling Geordies! flaresbars.co.uk/newcastleupontyne

TUP TUP PALACE

One of Newcastle's best-loved nightclubs, Tup Tup Palace is an icon in itself and it’s a special place for those who love cool cocktails, VIP parties and booming basslines that reverberate all night long. We can hardly wait for the days we are queuing along St Nicholas' Street, ready to drink and dance the night away inside. We've got our fingers crossed that, in the near future, this venue is back up and running with its lively list of club nights, with something for everyone. tuptuppalace.com

WORLD HQ

To be stood shoulder-to-shoulder with loved ones, shimmying away with a cold one as world-class talent strut their stuff, is a scene we’d pay big money for. Kings of subculture and the masters of producing a groove unlike anywhere else across the globe, World HQ is a Toon icon that is held in the highest regard for those who love spiritually uplifting music. Friendly, all inclusive and a big deal when it comes to welcoming some of the hottest DJing talent to the city, we can't wait for this city giant to bouncing once again in the months to come. welovewhq.com

A major coup for our chums at Digital! Techno king and vibe technician, Marco Carola, will be taking to the decks this July for a summer blowout in the Toon.
