EACH ISSUE WE WELCOME YOU TO THE MAGAZINE WITH AN INTRODUCTION FROM A MEMBER OF THE NE1 TEAM, GIVING YOU THEIR UNIQUE TAKE ON WHAT’S GOING ON.

FRESH FROM THE PRESS

Welcome to the last issue of the NE1 magazine in this, well, has it been a year? Does it count? We know, it’s on every ad and every programme, every time you open social media, 2020 has been an odd one. But we’re still here and we’re so proud of our city and our region for getting through the year. So, we come to you with this issue. In a year that has seen the first gap in publication of this magazine in its history, that has seen lockdown editions, extended editions, truncated editions, this is the Christmas edition. And it’s different, well what did you expect? We know Christmas is a little unusual this year, and we feel it, but it’s not cancelled, and this magazine is proof of that. We’ll help you sort Christmas Day supplies, we’ve got gift ideas, a city full of windows to wander through, and a festive fitness challenge. Whatever the world throws at us, the businesses in this city absorb the blows, adapt to fit, and come back even better. We’ve seen it all year, and we’re still seeing it, so keep the faith, and we’ll see you in 2021!

NEW IN NE1

Word on the Street THIS YEAR MAY NOT HAVE GONE QUITE TO PLAN, BUT THERE’S NO STOPPING OUR SENSATIONAL CITY! THERE’S PLENTY GOING ON AS WE HEAD INTO THE FINAL WEEKS OF 2020. HERE’S A CITY CENTRE UPDATE... GIVING BACK THIS CHRISTMAS

In this time of merriment and self-indulgence, we’re sparing a thought for those less fortunate at Christmas, thanks to NEoffers. Every year they come up with a touching deal that will help those without a roof over their head during the festive period. For just £5, you can buy a homeless person a three-course Christmas dinner. The initiative is run by the incredible team over at the People’s Kitchen, who have been feeding the vulnerable people of Newcastle for over 30 years. Last Christmas, the initiative raised an incredible £95,000! So, Newcastle, it’s time to do your bit, be sure to get involved and give something back to the local community this Christmas. neoffers.co.uk

RAVISHING REFURB: MARCO POLO

PAINTING THE TOWN RED

We’re super excited to learn that the Toon will be welcoming Radisson RED, a brand new, upscale hotel brand that promises to bring tons of pizazz to NE1’s hotel scene. Set to open in 2023, the innovative and style-savvy hotel will be located in the city centre within The High Street Group's £120m Strawberry Place development just next door to St. James' Park, and it’s coming with a whole raft of cool features. This sleek new hospitality hotspot will boast 200 guest rooms, a stylish sky bar (ideal for those long summer evenings) and a beautiful al fresco dining space on the roof too. We’re looking forward to keeping up to date with this dazzling development. Stay tuned! radissonhotels.com

STREET ZERO SUCCESS

In a year that has thrown up a whole load of challenges, we are overjoyed to bring you this bit of good news from Street Zero! Newcastle is close to becoming the first city in the UK to end rough sleeping for good! In this year alone, the partnership has helped 185 people move into accommodation as well as supporting 120 people from hostels into a permanent residence within the community. Amazing work all round! streetzero.org

After 46 years serving up delightful Italian dishes to hungry revellers in the Toon, our friends at Marco Polo are going under the knife for a bit of cosmetic surgery. Expect dazzling decor and an exciting new menu jam-packed with Italian home comforts. They’ll be ready and waiting for us by spring next year, so be sure to pop in, taste something terrific and let them know what you think! marcopolonewcastle.com

STRAWBERRY LANE FOREVER

Strawberry Lane is a bustling source of positivity! We’ve just learned that £30m of funding has been secured by Ask Real Estate, meaning work on a cutting-edge, six storey HQ for the firm will commence in the coming months. They’re the group behind the stunning Newcastle Gateshead Quays plans, and rumour has it their designs are focussed on creating an entirely sustainable and efficient building in the city centre. Great news as Newcastle continues its hard work to be one of the greenest cities on the planet! askrealestate.co.uk

LIVIN’ ON THE WESTSIDE

We’re thrilled to learn that Quayside West has just had its planning application approved and that work to transform the 15-acre former industrial site will begin in the coming months! Quayside West will bring a cool new living quarter to the city, welcoming 1,100 new homes, a sleek 135-bed hotel as well as a whole raft of supporting restaurants, shops and beautiful outdoor areas too. newby.co.uk

NEW IN NE1

BANK HOUSE BEGINS TO TAKE SHAPE!

The pandemic hasn’t stopped the development team on Pilgrim Street! The hard-hats have been zooming about and the army of hi-vis workers have been non-stop as the city undergoes another terrific Toon transformation. Those sleek new offices are coming along nicely - last week they were digging out the remnants of the old bank vaults! We’re constantly on the lookout for developments as one of the Toon's biggest projects in a generation takes shape. Keep going gang! ryderarchitecture.com

LEVELLING UP BIG DEVELOPMENTS COMING FROM NE1’S NIGHTLIFE MAESTROS

Our dancefloor time may have been cut short this year, but two of the Toon’s coolest soirée spots have some sweet transformations for you to look forward to when the good times return! Here’s all you need to know...

MORE ROOM FOR MEAT:STACK

We decided to get our hands dirty in 'lockdown 2.0' and muck in as our latest commission at Meat:Stack came to life! We’re super proud to have worked together with Southern Green Ltd, Raskl. We hope that when the time comes, you’ll all enjoy feasting on your favourite Meat:Stack staple in a greener space - it’s the perfect spot to chow down on some wintery burgs! meat-stack.com

DASCHING AROUND TOON!

All in a day's work for our NE1 Street Rangers! While our heroic Rangers are renowned for cleaning streets and guiding people around the town, it seems they’ve turned their heads to rescuing four-legged runaways! The story behind this wholesome image? Well, between premises checks, liaising with businesses and ensuring the city is safe and sanitised, our Retail Core Manager, Mark, took a brief break to help a cheeky little pup who had made her way into town all the way from Gateshead! It's safe to say that no two days are the same at NE1 HQ - nothing surprises us in the city centre these days!

ANYONE FOR A JAZZ STREAM?

A CUT ABOVE THE REST: THE VERMONT HOTEL

Our friends at Gainford Group are back with another treat for Geordies who love cool beats, sweet dishes and stunning views. You may have seen it on our social media recently, but here's an exclusive lowdown on ABOVE - a dazzling, all-weather rooftop bar and restaurant coming to the city in early 2021. Located on the roof of The Vermont Hotel, ABOVE boasts 360-degree backdrops of NE1’s phenomenal cityscape and will offer up some of the finest hospitality in the city. We’re pretty certain ABOVE will rival the world’s best! With a striking design, cool cocktails and a lush menu to compliment it, ABOVE has been designed with an adaptable layout meaning it can also be used for all kinds of special occasions including weddings, private parties, corporate events and more. abovenewcastle.com

CHRISTMAS COVERED

An NE1 guide to festive fun in the city

WHILE SOME CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS AND EVENTS CAN’T HAPPEN THIS YEAR, THERE ARE LOADS THAT HAVE ADAPTED TO ENSURE WE CAN SPREAD FESTIVE JOY THROUGHOUT THE CITY. WE’VE PICKED OUT SOME OF THE BEST BELOW. HERE’S HOW YOU CAN GET FESTIVE IN NEWCASTLE THIS DECEMBER...

THE BERGEN TREE AT NEWCASTLE CIVIC CENTRE THROUGHOUT DECEMBER

It’s beginning to look like Christmas in the city centre - in fact, it’s been looking festive for some time now. The beautifully iconic Bergen tree outside Newcastle Civic Centre was illuminated at the end of November, ready to bring festive joy to the city throughout the most wonderful season of all. The tree - an annual gift from Norweigan sister city Bergen - was lit up without the usual festive celebrations and cheer from locals, but it was filmed and broadcast on the council’s social media channels as Lord Mayor Councillor David Cook clicked the switch. Another example of our city doing everything it can to involve the people of NE1 and ensure Christmas is as magical as ever. The tree looks as fantastic as you'd expect, so big up to all involved in this year’s installation!

THE CITY’S CHRISTMAS LIGHTS THROUGHOUT DECEMBER

We may not have gathered at Grey’s Monument in our Santa hats and belted out the Christmas tunes in a crowd, but our city still looks as stunning as ever this year. The lights are on, the Toon is twinkling and it's the perfect reminder that Christmas isn’t cancelled! Metro Radio’s Steve & Karen’s took to Facebook to livestream the big light switch-on for 2020. The star guest was Santa Claus himself - it doesn’t get much better than that, folks!

WONDERFUL WINDOWS

Newcastle’s Christmas Windows

WE’VE LAUNCHED A NEW AND FABULOUSLY FESTIVE NE1 INITIATIVE DESIGNED TO BRING SMILES TO FACES THIS CHRISTMAS. NEWCASTLE’S CHRISTMAS WINDOWS BRINGS THE WORK OF CITY CREATIVES AND DISPLAYS IT IN THE HEART OF THE CITY. HERE’S ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT OUR DAZZLING WINDOW DISPLAYS…

As the city reopened on 2nd December, our Christmas elves were out and about putting the finishing touches to NE1’s latest city-centre offering, 17 bespoke designs for 27 windows across nine sites within central Newcastle. Utilising the talents of local designers, artists, illustrators, graphic design students, and members of the public, as well as three local primary schools, our city’s windows lit up with lush artwork from some seriously inspiring creatives. From Christmas movie references, to iconic cityscapes and Instagrammable

artworks, each window display tells a story, and they’re in-situ, ready for you to explore when enjoying the city this December. From the top of Northumberland Street to the bottom of the Groat Market (on the site of the iconic ex-Chronicle offices), our windows are spread throughout NE1, and you can find a list of their locations on the following page, and on a special window design at Byron on Grey Street. Our artists include Yvette Earl, Jonpaul Kirvan and Martin McAloon, Lines Behind (the designer of our

10 // More listings at getintonewcastle.co.uk

lovely August magazine cover!), and Creative Ginger, whilst we’ve also got four competition winners’ designs installed, two from Northumbria University, and two members of the public. Rounding it all off, local creative agency, The Traveller and the Bear, took over some seriously impressive space, and students from St. Cuthbert’s Primary School, Mountfield Primary School, and West Denton Primary School (WDPS) gave us their fab snowman and bauble designs! It’s a colourful reminder to all that

Christmas isn’t cancelled this year, just different! When you’re in town next, doing a spot of shopping, or ordering some fab food to take home, plan a little detour and visit the windows, we guarantee each has a different style and story you’ll love, there are even some that need a little audience participation! Tag us in your snaps on social media as you stroll through the city this December. We can’t wait to hear from you. #NewcastlesWindows newcastleschristmas.com

WONDERFUL WINDOWS

Getting to know... YVETTE EARL, ILLUSTRATOR

How did you get involved with NE1’s Newcastle’s Christmas Windows initiative? I was contacted by Ben at NE1 and asked if it was something I would be interested in taking part in. I was absolutely thrilled to be asked! I can’t thank NE1 enough for the opportunity, it’s a fantastic initiative and such a great way to get the creative community involved. Why is now such an important time to showcase your work in the city? On a personal level, it’s an amazing opportunity for me and will hopefully help me grow my small business. The artwork is going to be a brilliant way of spreading some colourful festive cheer throughout the city centre. How did you start out as an illustrator?

I knew from a young age I wanted to follow a creative path. I studied illustration at the University of Cumbria, but after graduation I focused on gaining some experience as a graphic designer. I work full-time as a graphic designer for HLM Architects, but I also get to illustrate within my role which is brilliant. I started building up an illustration portfolio in 2017 but was dipping in and out of it. This year I have really focused and pushed myself, the popularity of my Newcastle pub illustrations took me by surprise. What can you tell us about your design style? Very colourful, highly detailed and perhaps emotive. They're designed to bring up memories of good times. What can people expect to see

CHAOPHRAYA AT HOME Takeaway and delivery now available Eldon Square

from your Christmas Window submission? I wanted to make mine as colourful as possible with a bit of festive cheer to really brighten up the space. People can have a good look at it and hopefully spot their own favourite building within it! Will people be able to buy the prints? I’m selling the separate buildings as prints on their own. For instance, you can buy a St James’ Park print or a Tyne Bridge print. I will also be doing prints of the actual window artwork, these ones may be limited edition. Tell us three Newcastle businesses you will be supporting throughout December? I really love Christmas time, so I can’t wait to go to Fenwick and get in the festive spirit! I’m also going to be gift shopping at The Biscuit Factory, I love the items they have for sale and it’s supporting local artists - a win-win! I was also really hoping to be spending some time in some of my favourite pubs, bars and restaurants, which include, Horticulture, Dabbawal and The Bridge Tavern. yvette-earl.com Shop: etsy.com/uk/shop/ yvetteearlillustration

While it’s incredibly easy to get caught up in the shopping rush, there’s tons of NE1 stores who have extended their opening times. Fenwick, Eldon Square, Argos and many more have extended their shopping hours into the evening for the Christmas rush all the way until 9pm- it’s a good idea to check online before dashing into the city!

DID YOU KNOW?

John Lewis have introduced ‘Queue Safely, Queue Virtually’; a new online booking system that allows shoppers to pick a time they’d like to shop and come straight in without any delays or hassle! johnlewis.com/customer-services/shops-reopening

TAKE IT EASY…

The city gets busy as Christmas fast approaches, but there’s plenty of time to shop. Remember, the first and last two hours of the day are usually the quietest, and with Alive After Five still offering free parking after 5pm in seven multi-storey car parks, allied with extended opening hours, you can be safe in the knowledge that your Christmas shopping can be done with ease!

BE VIGILANT, BE WARY, BE SMART!

HANDS, SPACE, FACE!

We know, we know, you're bored to tears of hearing it, but there are three things we must remember. Wash your hands, keep your distance and cover your face!

Don’t forget about the Toon’s Alive After Five car parks!

Our Alive After Five parking initiative is still in place, and it’s here to help you as we check off our Christmas to-do lists. Like a tree without tinsel or a dinner without turkey, Christmas in the city wouldn’t be the same without NE1's free parking scheme.

READY, STEADY, GO!

NE1’s Festive Five Run 5, donate 5, challenge 5 GET ON SANTA’S NICE LIST BY TAKING PART IN NE1’S FESTIVE FIVE FUNDRAISER THIS DECEMBER... Big news folks! You all remember the summertime ‘5-5-5’ phenomenon - run five, donate five and nominate five. Well, we’ve put our own spin on this global initiative and we’re relaunching it with a new festive twist. NE1’s Festive Five will be running (excuse the pun!) throughout December, challenging Geordies to don their running shoes, walking boots or swimming goggles to help Cash 4 Kids’ Mission Christmas campaign. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to run, walk, swim, skip or bunny hop five kilometres, donate £5 and nominate five people who would equally be up for a festive challenge to raise some cash for a great, local cause. Every year, the friendly faces at Cash 4 Kids collect donations to ensure underprivileged and disadvantaged children across the North East all receive presents come Christmas Day. However, due to the coronavirus pandemic, people working largely from home and tons more other complications, there has been a serious drop in donations to the charity and the handling of donated toys is much more difficult with safety measures in place. So, this is where we can step in! Our Festive Five will allow generous Geordies to help out from home, get some fresh air into the system and still have a bit of fun all while raising much-needed money for charity in a COVID-safe way. How can you get involved? Well,

instead of presents, Cash 4 Kids is asking for cash donations to help avoid any unnecessary COVID risks. You can sign up for NE1’s Festive Five by visiting festivefive.co.uk, and as a token of your hard graft, you can even register to get a commemorative medal to mark your involvement in our event! Oh, and don’t sneak off without giving us some photographic evidence! We want to see you out running in your Santa hats - don’t forget to tag us in your snaps on social media using the hashtag #NE1FestiveFive! Things may be different this year, but Newcastle’s Christmas is still happening, and together with Newcastle City Council and NGI, we’re working together to bring the Christmas spirit to the city during these difficult times. festivefive.co.uk

Take a photo of your personal 5k and your festive dressing-up efforts, post them on social media using the hashtag #NE1FestiveFive, and tag @NewcastleNE1. Be sure to then nominate five of your friends to join the festivities...

HAPPY NEW YEAR

Hello 2021!

WHILE A CERTAIN SOMETHING WILL ENSURE THERE CAN’T BE THE USUAL BIG, BLOW-OUT NEW YEAR’S EVE BASH IN NEWCASTLE THIS YEAR, WE’VE GOT SOMETHING VERY EXCITING UP OUR SLEEVES TO REPLACE IT, AND EVEN BETTER, YOU WON’T HAVE TO LEAVE YOUR DOORSTEP! There’s no doubt about it, our New Year’s plans are going to be very different this year, but if 2020 has taught us anything, it’s that we’re all pretty good at pivoting and putting smiles on faces whatever situation we find ourselves in. As a city with a reputation for having a great Geordie knees-up when it comes to New Year’s Eve, NE1, Newcastle Council and NGI, supported by Urban Green Newcastle, are working together within the guidelines to ensure that people can still celebrate

the turn of the year - because, let’s face it, this is a year we really will be celebrating seeing the back of. That being said, amongst the madness, there have been a number of positives to come out of 2020 - one of them being community spirit. So with that in mind, our New Year celebrations will celebrate our city’s togetherness in a truly unique way. Please excuse the supreme secrecy here, but all will be revealed imminently and we’re certain you’re going to be blown away by what

we’ve got in store. What we can tell you is that whilst we’re not going to be able to gather in numbers, this has inspired us to work within what we can do, and to create something even more jaw-dropping and memorable than ever before, with multiple happenings across the New Year break. A little birdy has whispered in our ear that it might involve wrapping up and stepping out onto your doorstep to wave goodbye to 2020 and join your neighbours in gazing up into

the night sky, whilst we all join in a round-of-applause for our friends, family, colleagues and essential workers who have really pulled together to see us through the challenges. That’s all we can tell you for now folks, but rest assured, we’ve got a real treat for you all - it’s going to be a super striking celebration of our city. Stay tuned on our social media channels as we reveal more information in the coming days. Catch you on the flip side!

A MESSAGE FROM NE1 HQ

As 2020 turns to 2021, Newcastle NE1 will continue to fight on behalf of our businesses, lobbying the highest levels of Government for support as well as communicating regularly to our businesses through webinars, and direct contact. Remember, we are here for you in 2021 as much as we were in 2020. NE1 represents 1,400 businesses in the city. We are at your beck and call for whatever you need, whenever you need it. Please do get in touch. Here’s to 2021!
