FRESH FROM THE PRESS

It has been a sensational first couple of weeks for me as the new Marketing & Events Intern here at NE1.

So far, my highlights have been attending the Fenwick Christmas window unveiling and the launch for Santa’s Rooftop Cinema, standing front row watching Sam Fender switch on the Christmas lights and experiencing the city transform into a magical wonderland with the arrival of the Christmas Markets.

As I’m writing this column, the office is full of boxes containing elf hats and reindeer food for our upcoming Search for Santa event. There’s always something fun around the corner and I’m delighted to be a part of the action!

I’m excited about the line-up for the 24 Doors of Christmas and the chance to have a nosy around Hadrian’s Tower before it is open to the public!

The festive season is well and truly here and I plan to embrace it to the fullest!

STUNNING NEW CENTRE

Newcastle University has revealed a stunning new £35m building - and its story is inspiring!

Located inside the Newcastle Helix site, the new building will be named The Frederick Douglass Centre in honour of the 19th century social reformer, abolitionist and anti-slavery campaigner. The state-of-the-art facility brings a stunning auditorium, lecture theatre and a range of seminar rooms and exhibition spaces over several floors.

So why is it named after Frederick Douglass? One of the most famous intellectuals of his time, this pioneering individual was born into slavery around 1818 in Maryland, USA. Douglass escaped from slavery and went on to lecture to thousands of people across the world. In 1846, British supporters of Douglass including Anna Richardson and her sister-in-law, Ellen, both from Newcastle, raised £150 to pay for his freedom, making him legally free. At the time, Newcastle was one of the leading cities campaigning for reform, with anti-slavery lectures held in the city centre on a regular basis, Douglass himself gave two addresses to meetings in Newcastle, a source of great pride for local residents.

The naming ceremony for the building saw Frederick Douglass’s great-greatgreat grandson, Kenneth B Morris Jr, officially open the building, exactly 52 years after Dr Martin Luther King Jr was awarded an honorary degree by Newcastle University.
