As autumn begins it’s a good time to reflect on another busy summer here in NE1 and nowhere more so than in the Bigg Market. Completion of the Public Realm back in the spring paved the way (get it...?) for a programme of exciting new events. We kicked things off in style back in April with the inaugural Bigg Market Bash which featured food, music, children’s entertainment and the usual back catalogue of NE1 props! From May to September, the Bigg Foodie Fridays became a regular fixture on the NE1 events calendar and gave folk the chance to sample the best of the city’s street food. Book-ending it all was the fabulous Merchant Quarter Revival which saw Newcastle’s historic core transformed into a street festival with markets, music and much more to enjoy.

Summer 2019 also saw the arrival of a couple of excellent new premises with Hibou Blanc and Market Shaker both bursting onto the Bigg Market scene. We also welcomed a brand new shopfront on the famous Koh I Noor.

With the imminent completion of the Victorian WC’s and the restoration of Cosyjoes, the rapidly changing face of the Bigg Market is showing no sign of slowing down.

From Magic Weekend, to Pride, and Ed Sheeran’s three amazing nights at St James’ Park, big events have been drawing visitors into the city to enjoy everything Newcastle has to offer!

Not only have they ensured some fab days and nights in the city centre, these amazing events have played a pivotal role in boosting the economy - the Toon welcomed a massive 18 million people last year, a rise of 3.5% compared to 2017’s figures.

But that’s not all! The number of overnight stays increased to 5.4 million nights and visitor expenditure clocked in at a gigantic £626m - up by 6% from 2017.

On top of all this, the early figures for 2019 are looking VERY promising the upward trend in visitor numbers is continuing to grow, great news!

Earlier in the year, we welcomed over 80,000 fans to the city for the European Club Rugby Finals and hotels enjoyed a 99% hotel occupancy over the weekend. You’ll be pleased to know that even more international and national events are scheduled for the city in the coming years, from Magic Weekend returning in 2020, to the Rugby League World Cup in 2021!
