From walks up to Palace Green, to dining alfresco and drinks by the riverside, I don’t know about you, but everything always seems a little better and brighter when there’s clear blue skies overhead. Having lived in the county for a few months now, my family and I have been enjoying exploring the city and finding our feet in this new place we call home. And speaking of things seeming better and brighter, it’s been so encouraging to see folks enjoying all that this beautiful city has to offer; footfall is starting to climb, more and more people are coming back into Durham, and the city is bouncing back to life after a long hard year of lockdowns and restrictions.

Paula Radcliffe strides into DH1 for Durham City Run Festival! Huge news regarding Durham’s beloved running event! We’ve recently learned that marathon star and Team GB icon, Paula Radcliffe will be making an exclusive appearance in the city this summer as she kickstarts the summer sporting festivities. Taking place from 15 - 17 July, the Durham City Run Festival will see a number of high-octane races whistle through the streets of Durham, with Paula leading the ‘Families On Track’ programme. It’s brilliant news that the festival is returning this year after months of false starts. With thousands of smiling faces, fitness enthusiasts and charitable heroes all descending to the cobbled streets in 2021, Durham City Run Festival is shaping up to be one of the best yet! Local pride for local people: Durham Pride returns for 2021... A colourful celebration will be taking over the streets of Durham this July as Durham Pride returns with a vibrant celebration of LGBTQ+ culture!
Blossoming into life: Durham in Bloom 2021 goes for gold! As you’ve probably seen on your commute to work or coffee date at one of our many indie cafes, Durham City is looking absolutely splendid right now and it’s mainly down to the incredible work of the Durham in Bloom group. They’re going for gold again this year, and having won the Best Large Town trophy a staggering 17 times in the last 21 years, we think this lot are in with a close shout for glory. As part of their entry to Northumbria in Bloom, Durham in Bloom hold an annual ‘Beautiful Durham’ competition which encourages people to improve their environment and communities in the city and surrounding areas. Residents, groups, organisations and schools within the competition area are all invited to showcase their gardens, horticultural schemes, floral displays, hanging baskets or planters. A fantastic initiative from a brilliant group of dedicated people that keep our city centre looking bloomin’ beautiful! durham.gov.uk
The ticketed event is due to take to the city streets on 31 July and will see proclaimed Queen of Durham, Tess Tickle, hosting the festivities in style! Also featuring at Durham Pride are a raft of DJs, tons of bars serving up delicious drinks, as well as a wide-range of food to ensure it’s a delicious city celebration. With even more exciting entertainment due to be announed in the coming weeks, stay tuned online and get that date in the diary. It promises to be a stunning occasion!
New bar planned for 93 Elvet Bridge Our city’s twinkling nightlife scene will be welcoming a fresh face to the streets shortly. It has recently been announced that a brand new bar on 93 Elvet Bridge is on the horizon, and we can’t wait to see what’s in store! A new business is preparing for its home in a Grade II Listed building overlooking the River Wear, boasting stunning views of our lovely city. What we do know is that we can expect dazzling new decor, a shiny new bar menu and a first-class hospitality team to match. A brilliant brass festival, a special return to the theatre and new places to explore on two wheels. There’s plenty going on in our lovely city this summer. Time to fill the diaries...
A vibrant music festival that weaves musical genres together through the streets of Durham... Summer in the city just keeps on getting better and better. Durham Brass Festival is set to return to the city centre and this year’s programme is serving up something incredibly special. The event comes packed with a vast range of brass-themed live music with COVID-safe audiences across outdoor spaces and indoor venues throughout Durham, plus plenty online streaming from incredible brass artists around the globe. Taking inspiration from the brass band heritage of County Durham, the world-renowned festival weaves
together musical genres in a vibrant and entertaining five-day festival taking place across the city. With headline performances in iconic locations from some of the UK’s finest artists, to school gigs and an inclusive engagement programme, the Durham County Council festival culminates in a massive three-day FREE concert at Durham Racecourse. This is a new and exciting addition to Brass, with the introduction of an outdoor stage funded by a Culture Recovery Fund grant from Arts Council England. By staging more

events outside, Brass will not only be safer and more accessible, but will channel the al fresco, carnival vibe that this genre of music is so well loved for. With a lively line-up of both contemporary and traditional artists, the festival adds a new energy and dimension to Brass, making it an accessible genre across the generations in our region. There really is something for everyone! One of the stars of the show will undoubtedly be a headline performance by Richard Hawley, who will be accompanied by the NASUWT Riverside Band within the imposing and beautiful surroundings of the historic Durham Cathedral. The year 2019 was a landmark one for songwriter Richard Hawley. His ninth studio album, Further, achieved his joint highest chart entry at number 3, he co-created a musical based on a collection of his songs which played at Sheffield’s Crucible Theatre, and he celebrated his 20th anniversary as a solo artist. In the two decades that have elapsed since he jettisoned band life, first with The Longpigs and then as Pulp’s guitarist, the 52-year-old songwriter has forged one of the most singular careers in modern music. Hawley has played on some of the biggest stages during his
10
prestigious career - recording eight critically acclaimed albums and collaborating with the Arctic Monkeys, Elbow and Paul Weller - but says the chance to play the Brass Festival offers something unique and an opportunity to make his music go ‘widescreen’. Performing alongside Richard Hawley on the night are NASUWT Riverside Band. The band itself was founded in 1877 and was formerly known as the Newcastle Brown Ale Band. They rehearse in Pelton Fell, Chester-le-Street and have an active diary of concerts and contests. This includes recently placing 4th out of 18 bands in the Senior Cup competition in Blackpool. The band also competes regularly in the Scottish Open Contest, as well as the North of England regional contest in which they frequently place in the top of the table and result in trips to the National Finals at the Albert Hall. One of Durham’s most popular bands, they are skilled performers who are always keen to collaborate and take on new challenges. Since forming in 2004 Sunderland duo, Field Music have gained a reputation for an ambitious and intellectual approach to making music. Their relentless creativity has seen them pick up Mercury Award nominations, endless plaudits from the critics and - most famously of JUL | AUG 2021 ISSUE 5
LIFE InDurham all - a thumbs up from Prince shortly before his death. Field Music brothers, Pete and David Brewis, have been specially commissioned by Durham Brass Festival in a new partnership with the Durham Miners’ Association to write and produce a dedicated composition focussed on the legacy of the Durham Mining Industry. They will be playing the work twice at Redhills - a matinee and evening performance - shows made even more unique because the venue is the home of the DMA, the historic headquarters known as “the pitman’s parliament”. What’s more? Sunday afternoon will see Black Dyke Band performing at Durham Brass Festival for the very first time. Black Dyke Band should need no introduction to brass connoisseurs. This troupe are used to touring the world, playing the Albert Hall or Sydney Opera House, so the chance to see them live on the banks of the Wear - for free - is an astonishing coup for this year’s festival. Founded in Yorkshire in 1855, The Black Dyke Band hit number one in the classical charts last autumn with John Rutter: Anthems, Hymns and Gloria for Brass Band, and have won numerous awards in their long history. Brass is a key part of Durham County Council’s festival and events programme this summer, and reflects the local authority’s commitment to cultural regeneration. As well as boosting the economy and raising the county’s reputation as a cultural destination at a critical time, Brass aims to bring communities together and create unforgettable experiences for people of all ages. The festival’s outreach programme is a key part of this, with almost 16,000 children at 82 schools enjoying mini-gigs and workshops in 2019. This year, some of the country’s best street bands will once again share their skills in schools across the county in a COVID-secure way. There will also be outdoor performances at care homes; and to celebrate the heritage of brass music in communities, a series of photographs by artist Rob Bowman featuring band stands will be displayed on bus shelters in Durham, Consett, Horden and Spennymoor. Arguably the world’s greatest display of community, international solidarity, and working class culture, it truly is a unique and inspiring spectacle for those in attendance.

2021 was meant to be the year where we all came together to celebrate a special 150th anniversary. The streets should have been filled with smiling faces, a vibrant myriad of banners, colours and party pieces would have ambled down the streets and our business community would be showcasing their unique offering to the wider world.
It’s a well-known fact that Durham Miners’ Gala has no start time, no finish time and no one place of assembly.
Yet the world had other ideas. Planned for early July, the celebrations were called off and party pieces were once again, put away for another year. Usually, we would fill the pages of our lovely magazine with events surrounding the day, with food and drink guides to catch the best of the action and so on. Instead, we’re using our mag to

Traditionally, the colliery bands would march though their villages, starting early in the morning before making their way to Durham from all directions and, in the main, that tradition remains today. The main assembly point is traditionally Market Square. Other assembly points are the Miners’ HQ at Red Hill near the railway station and the New Inn on the west side of the city. The focal point of the Gala is the County Hotel at
Old Elvet where the two legs of the procession converge into one. While it’s incredibly disappointing to miss out on the festivities this year, organisers are already planning 2022’s event to make sure it’s a celebration for the ages. We can’t wait to see you all in the streets of our beautiful city, celebrating our heritage next year!

Inspiring performances >> So - here’s the key dates for your diaries. The first Durham Fringe Festival will run from Wednesday 28th July to Sunday 1st August 2021. It will feature hundreds of performances from a wide range of people connected to the region and these diverse performances will take place in a plethora of venues dotted across the city. One of the many joys of a Fringe Festival taking part in the city? A wealth of contrasting performances are showcased across multiple venues around the city. This allows you to experience the full breadth of the festival’s programme, whilst also visiting some of the city’s best bars and restaurants. From
botanical gardens situated over the river and bustling bars standing tall in the Market Square, to cosy cafes showcasing incredibly intimate oneband dramas, to the members of the Little Theatres Guild strutting their stuff to onlookers, Durham Fringe Festival is about showcasing talent anywhere in the city, to anyone onlooking. From marvellous musical productions and nail-biting dramas, right through to stand-up shows and spell-binding routines from mischievous magicians, Durham Fringe Festival has it all and it’s a carnival experience that will inspire, educate and evoke a range of emotions this summer. Nightlife is near: DH1’s clubbing scene is just around the corner... Durham is synonymous with antiquated pubs and our lovely city is usually famed for its scenic watering holes that evoke memories of bygone eras. There’s always something going down at this vibrant city spot and you’ll be hard pressed to find anywhere else in the city that boasts two resident DJs taking up the decks every weekend. The Butchers Deli, a new hybrid cross between a conventional butchers and contemporary delicatessen, has recently opened on Saddler Street and they’ve come in with a bang! Featuring a sleek interior adorned with vibrant neon lighting, beautifully finished white tiling throughout and mosaic flooring synonymous with the streets of Porto, The Butchers Deli have pulled out all the stops when it came to kitting out 77 Saddler Street! A creation from North East native John Stirk, this striking new venue is headed up by renowned head chef Keith Curtis, who serves up freshly-made delicacies
