Rising on the airwaves… Durham OnAir has enjoyed a meteoric start to life in the city! The brand new local radio station continues to grow as more and more people tune in to enjoy the non-stop entertainment specifically created for Durham. In the past month, the team have added a number of exciting new programmes to the schedule. For all the punk fans out there, ‘The Punk Corner’ is a brand new show that is now broadcast on Wednesday evenings at 11pm and ‘60s On Sunday’ does exactly what it says on the tin every Sunday morning at 9am. Sue Sweeney continues to tell your amusing stories from across County Durham every Monday and Tuesday night and the Breakfast Show is waking up more and more listeners every single week. The gang also have exciting developments in the pipeline as they look to move to DAB radio later in 2021. It’s all going on over at Durham OnAir. Tune in and be a part of the community, you won’t regret it!

First stop for £10.4M Durham City Bus Station! Those who have been heading into the city in the last few weeks will have seen a hive of activity over on North Road; that’s because a stunning £10.4m project to completely overhaul Durham’s current bus station has begun! Built in 1970, our current bus station is one of the main welcome points for visitors arriving into our beautiful city and many of us will remember the huge (and noisy!) red double deckers ferrying us in for work and leisure in the past. Fast forward to 2021, the bus station is still a major transport hub for the region and the county as a whole, and so Durham County Council have been the driving force in helping to develop a proposal to provide new first class facilities by welcoming a new era of transport for the city. The new bus station has been carefully designed to help increase the overall space for passengers in a lovely open and airy setting - meaning increased visibility and safety for buses leaving and arriving at the station. These generational plans are expected to be finished and open for use by autumn 2022. By then, we’ll be back enjoying our city in the way we do best. Stay tuned!

Flipping good challenge from Durham Cathedral: The Pancake Pilgrimage Pancake Day crêpe’d up on a lot of people this year, but Durham Cathedral was ready and waiting to celebrate a little bit differently - thanks to their sponsored community pilgrimage! Taking place from 12 to 19 February, the Cathedral encouraged its supporters to take on the challenge of collaboratively walking the distance of a local pilgrimage route whilst flipping a pancake. The route covered the 16,260 steps, 7.7 miles, or 12.4km between Chester-le-Street and Durham Cathedral, the final journey made by St Cuthbert’s coffin. Participants were challenged to flip a pancake whilst walking or running 995 steps, or 0.7km. During half term, the challenge invited individuals and families to engage with the Cathedral even though its doors were closed. At the end of the week, the Cathedral released a video compilation capturing the efforts of supporters from Durham… to Canada! depository A proud history and a promising future… We’re celebrating an iconic figure in Durham’s culture and heritage this spring… Durham Markets opened in 1852 and is nearly 170 years old. Formed a year earlier by an Act of Parliament, Durham Market is actually one of very few privately-owned markets in the UK and is a key player in Durham’s offering. Originally, the Market Hall opened Saturdays only, staying open until 11pm - and at one time, half of the Market Hall was butchers. The Market Hall has, on many occasions, moved with the times. In 1980 a major refurbishment added the mezzanine level with panoramic views from Café Cenno. The Market Hall has since opened Monday to Saturday. It’s seen businesses come and stay… H Garnham & Son Pet Stall has been in the Market Hall for almost 75 years. It remained open through two World Wars, survived the Spanish Flu, but admittedly has been closed on three separate occasions in the last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. But the future is bright. If the last year has taught us anything, it’s to value independent local businesses; the type that go above and beyond for their customers, the type you’ll find in Durham Market Hall, and their outdoor markets.

These pictures date back about 40 years and many of you will remember the book stall and Carr’s sweetshop.

Festival will kick off the festive season in style.

The team is anticipating to reopen on April 12th, and as restrictions are lifted, they hope to bring back not just the markets, but also events in both the Market Hall and the Market Place.

In the meantime, the team have extended a heartfelt thank you to their customers. The ones who were back in the market each time they reopened, the ones who will be back down the ramps from April 12th and the ones who’ve made great use of the new online shop with eco-friendly delivery within a five mile radius of the city centre.

Events such as the Classic Car Show should go ahead in August, hopefully we’ll have some Full Moon Street Food Markets and Durham Christmas

Durham City through your lens… Andrew Davison captures the peace and tranquility of Prebends Cottage during the recent spell of cold weather in early February. Prebends Cottage is a picturesque little cottage just over Prebends Bridge and a short walk away from Durham Cathedral on the peninsula. Built in 1770, the cottage was the original gatehouse for the bridge and more than likely doubled-up as the toll-keepers cottage.
