Hello Class of 2021!

As your Chancellor, I am humbled and honoured to be able to congratulate you on your achievements and to share this day of celebration with you.

Although I am sure the last few months have been challenging for you all, through your tenacity and hard work, you have achieved so much. Take a moment to remind yourself how far you have come. Take pride in that, you’re amazing!

As you reflect on what you have achieved, I hope that you feel inspired to set yourself new goals and aspirations as you move into the next phase of your life after university. I hope that what you have learned prepares you for whatever the next verse in the song of your life has in store. Yes, you will have gained academic knowledge that will prepare you for a fulfilling career. But I hope too that you learned about yourself, through your experience and from the friendships you made at the University of Sunderland.

Hold this in your heart.

Our ethos here at the University is one of inclusivity and enabling students from all backgrounds to access education and reach their potential. We want to have a positive impact on society, to be life-changing for our students and for you to go on an be a positive force for change. I feel certain that you, our extraordinary Class of 2021 will go on to do this and more.

I end with just a final word to you – our Class of 2021. Know your worth and never settle for a life that is less than you deserve.
