KEEPING UP WITH THE TRENDS Keeping up with the latest and greatest in decorating is always a challenge. This week we look at a couple of the standout ideas we have seen so far in 2020. The fundamental design of a home is rooted in its constructions. Where doors, windows and plumbing are located, for most home projects, is a set factor. Updating and modernising everything around that begins with an aesthetic vision, and flows into the practical requirements. In 2020 we are seeing some new styles that flip that process and find the materials best suited to the job and integrate them in a visually stunning way.
THE WALLS As environmentally conscious building practices and materials become a more fundamental part of our homes, the desire to feel like we are living in a space more connected with natural materials is ever increasing. Walls have been increasingly defaulting to a nice crisp white, an easy background to work around in terms of furniture and art, but a boring call all in all. Wooden panelling has seen itself resurging from antiquity. Although timber look panels are around, the trend of dark moody colours has also been coming to light more often than not. Picking the right panelling for your space is essential, making sure to draw the eye to the spaces positive qualities. Wallpaper is always a tricky subject due the sheer variety and radical difference in styles. If you want to make a real statement, tropical designs and bold floral patterns have been increasingly prevalent these past few years, and modern technology means installation is easier than ever, with simple peel-and-stick styles of wallpaper. Changing your mind or updating is now also incredibly straightforward, with removable wallpapers the ease of updatingsurpasses the time and effort of a painting session.
GREEN GROWING Horticulture and interior designers have found themselves interacting more than ever in recent years, with an ongoing movement of utilising houseplants to create a seamless integration from home to outside spaces. This isn’t so much of a 2020 trend as it is a style that will continue to evolve throughout the new year. Inside to outside spaces aren’t a budding concept either, but they are continuing to hold popularity and present themselves in exciting ways with the ongoing prevalence of retractable glass doors opening up living spaces. To accomodate this natural overlay, and outdoor integration, harder wearing stone flooring is becoming a more appealing option. To the right, the use of long tiles laid in a herringbone pattern creates a visually captivating motif that is practical, low maintenance and incredibly durable. THE CYCLE OF STYLE With splashes of art deco and mid century modern becoming a common staple of current interior design, we suspect a shift towards a later era will soon be reimagined for the contemporary home. The 1970’s are not renowned for their timeless home styling, but within the gaudy colours are some lessons in material and rich, earthy colour palettes we think will see their place in the new decade. Suede and corduroy are both hard wearing and textural materials that will see themselves return to our upholstery, but let’s keep them off the walls this time.
