WERE ST TRADING

T

hey say you don’t know what you’ve got until it’s gone, but in the case of Were St Trading, it was recognizing what you don’t have and creating it. After visiting, you will understand why people travel from country Victoria just to shop here. When the Costa family purchased the business seven years ago, formerly known as Montmorency Newsagent, they immediately saw the need for giftware in the area “there was nothing really around for locals to buy gifts, so we started with a small amount of giftware which took off really well” shares Jess, who works alongside her father Dino, mother Diana and brother Luke in the family business.

With the addition of giftware came an interactive social media presence, the creation of an online store, a complete internal face lift and a change of name to reflect the many services offered under the one roof including Newsagent, Post office and Tatts outlet. It is the multitude of these complementary offerings including free gift wrapping (they will even write a card and send your present off for you if you like), which have dubbed Were St Trading a unique one-stop-shop. Positioned within the heart of Montmorency Village spanning across two addresses, the vision was to create a welcoming, friendly, open plan space, where “everyone feels comfortable asking for help.” Mustread magazines sit alongside a treasure trove of thoughtfully sourced and curated giftware. Full to the brim yet free flowing. Clustered not only into categories but designed to tell visual stories making it easy to find and select just what you are looking for. The approach was simple, stock as many Australian made and owned products as possible as well as “listen to what the community wants and needs and make it easy for them to shop for the perfect gift”. Known for their extremely wide variety of gifts that cannot be found in mainstream stores and ever-changing product line, “it doesn’t matter who you are looking for, you will find something for anyone and any occasion.”

With a genuine desire to cater for everyone’s needs, Were St Trading not only has every gift recipient in mind but gift giver as well. Seen a product you would love Were St Trading to stock? Just ask! On the way to a party and need a gift? Take advantage of the wrap and go service. Know your budget but not sure what to get? Enlist the help of the team to put a custom hamper together based on the occasion or who you are buying for. “People are just so busy these days, and anything we can do to help ease any pressure is good.” With new stock arriving daily, from the classic to the quirky, for every age, stage and season, you are guaranteed to find just what you are looking for… and you can pay a bill and grab a Tatts ticket while you’re at it! WISH UPON A CUPCAKE ‘Let’s eat cake’

I

n pink neon lettering is the newest edition to light the wall of this exquisite Watsonia based cakehouse, and we couldn’t agree more. Located within a few minutes’ walk from Watsonia Train Station, Wish Upon a Cupcake offers a delectable mix of home-made treats and specialty drinks all made on the premises by owner Chantelle Hardwick and her mother Cathy. Having grown up baking and cooking, Chantelle turned her love of baking into a heart hustle ten years ago offering bespoke made-to-order homemade cupcakes. Fast forward six years and the demand for Chantelle’s mouthwatering treats along with her expanding offering, including specialty cakes, slices and biscuits, had left Chantelle in need of a bigger kitchen and a desire for a bricks and mortar offering. A space for the community to enjoy the irresistible baked goods with a cup of coffee, consult with customers on the design and flavour options for their made-toorder custom creations and provide a ready to go selection that are not only

pretty but taste amazing for those lastminute invites or events. Inspired by the look and feel of English Bakeries, the cakery is both warm and rustic. An exposed brick wall is complemented by a wood paneled counter. Cascading plants sit above country style seating. “There is a sense of calm when entering the space, a lot of people say it feels like home when they come in,” shares Chantelle. As well as the wide selection of seasonal cupcakes, handmade slices, biscuits, the infamous cakesicles (think ice cream paddle pop but with cake inside) and other sweet and savory baked goods, Chantelle’s passion for delicious flavour combinations and attention to detail extends into her beverage offerings, which includes lavender and rose lattes. Turning homegrown lemons into lemon curd, everything is baked from scratch using top-quality ingredients. Chantelle uses her own home grown produce when available, which influences the seasonal offerings and all other ingredients are fresh, “Our fruit flavoring comes from real fruit, nothing is artificial.” Seasonal specialties have developed over time; carrot cake over Easter, gingerbread cupcakes for Christmas and fruity flavours over

summer as well as the much-loved classics including red velvet, vanilla, chocolate and tiramisu. One peak through the gallery on Wish Upon a Cupcake website and social media, you can imagine the delight in the giving and receiving of each custom made-to-order cake, cupcake and cookie. “I love the challenge of a design someone has in mind…and then being able to witness their reaction when they come and collect the finished product.” Creating custom orders for every occasion, including birthdays, baby showers, weddings, engagements as well as custom logo cupcakes for corporate events, there is no end to the selection of flavors or designs to choose from. Whether you know exactly what you want or would like Chantelle to guide you through the process, each pictureperfect creation created by Wish Upon a Cupcake is here to show us, that you really can have your cake and eat it too.
