A LEGACY OF LIGHT: CELEBRATING WOMEN PHOTOGRAPHERS AT NGV

YOUR SPRING CAMPAIGN WINDOW IS NOW

With school holidays behind us, the market has shifted out of warm-up mode and into a genuine spring stride. Open-forinspection attendance has increased across new campaigns, particularly for family homes in walkable pockets and wellzoned school catchments. Stock is building, but so is buyer depth: more listings hit the portals over the weekend, yet enquiries, second inspections, and pre-auction offers kept pace. Auction volumes remain a touch lighter as we clear the postholiday lull, however, that’s a timing issue - not a demand issue. Expect a sharp step-up as we track toward “Super Saturday” on Saturday, 25 October and the final run of 2025 campaigns. For anyone eyeing a sale this year, the window is tightening: realistically, there are three to four weeks left to launch with enough runway for a full campaign.

The RBA held the cash rate at 3.60% on 30 September, and our on-the-ground assessment is consistent: serious buyers are finance-ready, and quality homes continue to draw competitive engagement. With rates on hold, confidence should firm; if conditions change later in the year, buyers tend to recalibrate quickly — value, presentation, and location remain the levers that decide outcomes.

Key themes this week: motivated family buyers, renewed investor interest amid tight rental conditions, and downsizers focusing on single-level, low-maintenance living. Wellpresented, well-located homes continue to lead the market.

Thinking of selling before year-end, or planning an early 2026 move? Speak with your local Marshall White team to book a confidential appraisal and strategy. ■

MALAYSIAN CHILLI CRAB

Ho Jiak

Bring the bold flavours of Ho Jiak into your own kitchen with this Malaysian Chilli Crab — a rich, aromatic dish best enjoyed with soft mantou buns to soak up the sauce.

INGREDIENTS

1 mud crab

Vegetable oil, for deep-frying

6 tablespoons potato starch

1 egg white

Coriander (cilantro) leaves, to garnish

Mantou (milk buns) or other bread, to serve

Chilli Sauce

10 long red chillies

8 × 5 cm (2 in) pieces fresh ginger, peeled

6 garlic cloves, peeled

1 large red onion, roughly chopped

5 tablespoons vegetable oil

2 teaspoons toasted belacan

4 tablespoons tomato sauce (ketchup)

200 ml (7 fl oz) water

125 ml (4 fl oz/½ cup) sweet chilli sauce

1 tablespoon chicken stock (bouillon) powder

3 tablespoons sugar

1 tablespoon light soy sauce

1 tablespoon MSG

METHOD

1. Place the crab in ice water to sedate it.

2. To make the sauce, blitz the chillies, ginger, garlic, and onion in a food processor to form a paste.

3. Heat the 5 tablespoons of oil in a wok over low heat. Sauté the paste until fragrant, then stir in the remaining sauce ingredients. Leave on very low heat to simmer gently.

4. In a large, heavy-based saucepan, heat enough oil for deep-frying to 180°C (360°F). Test by dipping the end of a wooden spoon or chopstick — it should sizzle immediately.

5. Once the crab is sedated, cut off the claws and gently crack the shells. Cut t he body into four pieces.

6. Coat the crab pieces in potato starch and deep-fry until cooked — about 3 minutes for the claws and 2 minutes for the body.

7. Remove the cooked crab with a slotted spoon and add to the wok with the chilli sauce. Stir well and bring the sauce to a boil.

8. Once boiling, thicken the sauce with an extra teaspoon of starch if necessary. Season with salt and sugar to taste, then gently stir through the egg white.

9. Transfer to a large platter, garnish with coriander, and serve with mantou or other bread.

Perfected The Perfect SUV

For many, the Audi Q5 has long embodied the ideal SUV – effortlessly combining style, performance, and practicality. With the arrival of the all-new Q5 and SQ5, Audi has taken that winning formula and refined it even further, delivering a luxury SUV that is unexpected by design.

The Q5 has been one of Audi’s best-selling models worldwide, and it is easy to see why. The new generation continues this legacy, offering a choice of three engine options: a new entrylevel TFSI front-wheel drive, a TDI with quattro all-wheel drive, and the exhilarating SQ5 powered by a 270kW V6 TFSI engine. The latter doesn’t just look fast; it sprints from 0-100km/h in an impressive 4.5 seconds. Whether you are seeking efficiency, allterrain confidence, or pure driving excitement, there’s a Q5 to suit every lifestyle.

From the outside, the Q5 strikes a careful balance between evolution and innovation. Its lines are crisp and contemporary, yet unmistakably Audi, with a design language that exudes quiet confidence rather than shouting for attention. This understated style is a hallmark of the brand, appealing to those who appreciate sophistication without excess. Step inside, and the transformation is immediately apparent. The interior shows a significant evolution in design and comfort, with its cutting-edge technology and Audi’s signature craftsmanship. Multiple large, high-definition screens create a seamless digital experience, while intuitive new controls and redesigned seating make every journey more comfortable. The use of premium, high-touch materials reinforces the Q5’s

reputation for luxury, while enhanced safety features offer greater peace of mind. Practicality has also been elevated, with increased rear passenger space and a larger luggage area, ensuring that this SUV is as functional as it is beautiful.

As ever, technology and innovation sit at the core of the Q5 experience. Advanced driver assistance systems, improved connectivity, and the latest infotainment options make this model more capable than ever. This is a vehicle designed for modern life, where performance and practicality meet effortless luxury.

The all-new Q5 and SQ5 are already generating excitement amongst loyal enthusiasts and those discovering Audi for the first time. Now available at Audi Centre Melbourne, Audi Centre Brighton, Audi Richmond, and Audi Mornington, this is the SUV that truly perfects the balance of size, quality, and performance.

The perfect SUV? Audi just made it even better. ■

A LEGACY OF LIGHT: CELEBRATING WOMEN PHOTOGRAPHERS AT NGV

This summer, the National Gallery of Victoria will cast a powerful spotlight on the trailblazing women behind some of the twentieth century’s most influential images. Opening 28 November 2025, Women Photographers 1900–1975: A Legacy of Light brings together more than 300 rare and innovative works by over 70 photographers, drawn from across continents and decades.

LEARN MORE

From Melbourne to Paris, Tokyo to Buenos Aires, the exhibition captures the complexity of modern life through the eyes of women who not only documented history but helped shape it.

Featuring icons such as Diane Arbus, Dorothea Lange, Lee Miller, Dora Maar and Olive Cotton alongside lesser-known but equally compelling figures, the exhibition presents a dynamic portrait of photography’s evolution across 75 transformative years. Audiences will encounter everything from fashion and portraiture to landscape, photojournalism and avant-garde experimentations, all set against the backdrop of seismic cultural shifts: the suffrage movement, the Great Depression, world wars, and the rise of women’s liberation.

The NGV has prioritised women photographers as part of its collection efforts in recent years, and more than half of the works on display are new acquisitions — 170 collected since 2020, with over 130 being shown publicly for the first time.

Among the highlights is Dorothea Lange’s Migrant Mother (1936), perhaps the most haunting image of the Great Depression, and Dora Maar’s portraits of Pablo Picasso, which turn the gaze of the lens back on one of modern art’s most celebrated men. Olive Cotton’s Teacup Ballet (1935) transforms simple crockery into a dance of shadow and form, while Ilse Bing’s mirrored Self-portrait (1931) cements her reputation as the “Queen of the Leica.” The exhibition also explores Melbourne’s own history, with Ponch Hawkes’ photographs from the 1970s capturing communal living, activism, and the burgeoning women’s movement in gritty, lived-in detail.

Other works challenge conventions of gender and identity directly. Claude Cahun and Marcel Moore’s 1930 artist book Aveux non Avenus uses photomontage and poetry to question sexuality and self-expression, while Lola Álvarez Bravo’s Las Lavanderas (c.1940) transforms everyday labour into striking formalism, emphasising the global importance of women’s perspectives.

In celebrating this breadth, A Legacy of Light highlights the often-overlooked contributions of women to twentieth-century photography. It serves as both a scholarly correction and an evocative journey, encouraging audiences to consider how women behind the camera helped reshape visual culture and collective memory.

The exhibition coincides with the fiftieth anniversary of International Women’s Year, offering timely recognition of how far society has come, and how these images continue to shape the way we see the world today.

Women Photographers 1900–1975: A Legacy of Light will be on display at NGV International, St Kilda Road, Melbourne, from 28 November 2025 to 3 May 2026. ■
