Lifestyle

Elemental Emotion

Aurel K. Basedow is a contemporary artist whose powerful visual language merges instinct, technique, and layered materiality. Drawing from a diverse background that spans over three decades - carpentry, textile dyeing, craftsmanship, and design - Basedow channels a deep affinity for abstract expressionism into his dynamic, mixed-media paintings. His works pulse with tension and release, existing in the delicate space between chaos and control.

Born in Munich in 1963, Basedow studied painting at the prestigious Academy of Fine Arts of Brera. After co-founding the celebrated Draga & Aurel design studio with his wife, Draga Obradovic, in 2007, he returned to painting in 2015 with a renewed urgency and focus. Since then, he has worked from his studio in Como, Italy, refining a style that is both deeply personal and universally resonant.

At the core of Basedow’s process is the principle of superimposition - layers of pigment, texture, and resin build upon one another, each gesture informed by the last. Materials such as Persian and Afghan rugs, cement, pastels, dyes, and spray paint form the raw vocabulary of his pieces. But it is resin, poured in meticulous, translucent layers, that defines his signature style. Acting as both a seal and a mirror, the resin creates a luminous depth that draws the viewer in, reflecting both the external world and the inner self.

Emotionally charged and visually complex, Basedow’s works demand more than passive viewing. They invite contemplation, connection, and self-reflection. Influenced by 20th-century icons like Gerhard Richter and Mark Rothko, his paintings reject conventional representation in favour of visceral, physical storytelling. Each piece is both artifact and experience - living, evolving, and deeply human.

In Australia, Aurel K. Basedow’s work is available exclusively through Mickys art, a premier destination for contemporary global art. Located in Armadale, Mickys art connects collectors and art lovers with some of the world’s most compelling artists. Through its gallery and curated platform, Mickys art provides Australians with rare access to Basedow’s transformative paintings - each one a window into a world of intuition, memory, and material exploration.

For those seeking art that resonates beyond the surface, Basedow’s work offers a powerful invitation to look closer and deeper. ■

from Mister Bianco Potato Gnocchi with C hives and C aviar

Inspired by his Sicilian roots, Chef Joseph Vargetto’s signature gnocchi dish embodies the spirit of southern Italy - enhanced by Melbourne’s seasonal influence at Mister Bianco.

Ingredients Method

500 g Désirée potatoes

150 g flour

1 egg yolk

80 g butter

1/2 teaspoon fresh nutmeg, grated 1 tbsp chives, finely chopped

100 ml vegetable broth, boiled

50 ml vodka

4 tbsp caviar Salt and pepper

1. Wash the potatoes. In a saucepan filled with salted water, cook them over low heat until softened.

2. Drain and peel the potatoes. Mash with a potato masher.

3. Combine the flour, egg yolk, and nutmeg with the potatoes. Roll the mixture into a long sausage shape to form a dough. Cut the dough into 5 cm pieces and shape them using a wooden gnocchi paddle.

4. Cook the gnocchi in boiling salted water.

5. Melt the butter in a pan and slowly add the boiling broth. Whisk to a creamy sauce and season with chives, salt, and pepper to taste.

6. Drain the gnocchi and add to the butter sauce.

7. Plate the gnocchi and garnish each serving with a spoonful of caviar. Serve immediately.

Held at the stunning Amphora venue inside Marvel Stadium, the Be BlueRock Foundation Gala brought together a community of people united by a shared passion for giving back.

On March 21st, guests enjoyed a delicious three-course meal and inspiring company, all while supporting a cause that aims to make a lasting difference in our communities.

The night was filled with heartfelt moments and uplifting conversations, with guest speakers sharing powerful insights into the challenges of homelessness, mental health, and social disadvantage. Their stories added meaning and urgency to the event’s purpose, reminding everyone of the importance of community-driven action.

A highlight of the evening was the live charity auction led by Marshall White Director/Auctioneer Davide Lettieri. His energy and enthusiasm helped drive strong bidding, with guests showing incredible generosity in support of the Foundation’s mission. One standout moment came when a weekend away in Harrietville was auctioned off for $4,100, and AFLW player Tayla Harris’s signed boots went for $2,300. Tayla also served as MC for the evening, bringing her warmth and energy to the event.

Approximately $38,000 was raised on the night, with all proceeds going directly to the Be BlueRock Foundation. In line with the Foundation’s Giving Strategy, funds will be distributed across three key cause areas:

• Protecting the Environment

• Improving Mental Health

• Supporting people affected by family violence and/or homelessness

Initial donations have been made to three impactful organisations: LifeChanger (Tayla’s chosen charity), Bridge It, and Reclink - each selected for their alignment with the Foundation’s mission to drive meaningful, longterm social change.

The gala was a moving celebration of generosity and unity, proving what’s possible when people come together to create lasting change. It was a meaningful night that left an impact - not only on those in the room but on the many lives the Be BlueRock Foundation continues to support through its work.

AUTUMN MARKET MOVES

Moving further into April and approaching the Easter break, we are seeing the market begin its usual seasonal shift. School holidays have officially kicked off this weekend, and with that, a softening in new stock coming to market - a trend we often observe at this time of year.

What has been notable, however, is how strong March turned out to be. It was, by all measures, a bumper month. The recent interest rate cut played its part, injecting renewed confidence into buyers who had been sitting on the sidelines. This, coupled with a tightening in supply, has pushed demand higher and, as a result, we are seeing prices begin to lift once again.

Looking ahead, the outlook is clear: listing volumes are likely to remain constrained through the holiday period, which is

creating a sense of urgency among buyers - particularly those looking to secure a property before winter sets in.

For vendors, this is an opportunity. The combination of limited stock and motivated buyers is creating strong conditions for those ready to sell now. As always, timing and presentation remain key - but for the right home, the market is proving both competitive and responsive.

We will be watching closely over the next few weeks as the market continues to adjust - but for now, the momentum remains firmly in place. ■
