FUTURE CITY LIVING

Inner city living is all about convenience, but with a healthy dose of culture and a vibrant lifestyle.

Such is the evolving nature of Melbourne’s inner city, that a discussion paper – Future Living – produced by the City of Melbourne, predicted that by 2031 an additional 42,000 homes will be built in the municipality.

It’s on Melbourne’s edge that the bigger homes will attract a person that wants the extra comfort that goes with more space, but at the same time offers an easy stroll to the CBD. Shrinking apartment sizes within the CBD area will mean that the attraction and best investment will be in the inner suburbs such as Richmond, South Yarra, Prahran, Carlton, Fitzroy and North Melbourne.

The vibrancy of these areas is attractive to a young, professional demographic that prefers an entertainment lifestyle within easy access to their home. It’s worth noting that more than half the people who live in Melbourne’s inner city are aged between 15 and 34.

Infrastructure plays an important role in inner city living and on that point Melbourne scored a perfect score in the EIU Liveability Report.

Importantly, Melbourne is not resting on its laurels with an expected massive investment in transport infrastructure in the next 20 years.

The continued growth of the inner city and inner suburbs will be measured in people. City of Melbourne’s director of city design, Professor Rob Adams, said that Melbourne – thanks to clever planning and innovative design – can add four million people but take up only 7.5 per cent of the land.

“What we’re seeing here is not about having massive rebuilding of cities, but transforming our existing cities, taking our assets and getting more out of them.

That really is the secret for the future,” he said.
