BRICKS OR WEATHERBOARDS? Some homeowners embarking on a renovation or building a new house face the decision between using weatherboards or bricks. Whilst this choice often comes down to personal preference and the style of house, there are a few considerations worth bearing in mind. • Brick walls are known for their strength and durability over time. • The initial cost of building with weatherboards is likely to be lower the using bricks.

• Weatherboards require more maintenance. For example, they need to be painted every 5-10 years. • Weatherboards walls are generally better for installation than brick because there is more air trapped in weatherboard’s walls. • Brick walls require careful quality construction especially in areas where ground movement is expected. Wrongly setting up brick wall footings, for example, can result in cracking or worse. • Weatherboard walls do not block out noise as well as brick walls. • Fixing major faults or damage to brick walls is likely to be more costly than replacing some weatherboards. • In areas where weather conditions change significantly, or in areas that are more susceptible to ground movement, brick homes are more likely to get damaged. • Weatherboards are relatively easy to install and it is easy to repair minor damage to weatherboards. • Weatherboards are more tolerant to house/ground movement. • The rate of property price increase is mainly driven by land values.
