DIY PAINTER’S GUIDE At this time of the year it’s far more enticing to complete indoor DIY projects than brave the elements outside. And one task that is at the top of many home owners’ list is painting. Be it a simple feature wall, a bathroom or the entire house, painting is a job most of us can do ourselves if the inclination is there and if time permits. In terms of colour, darker hues are definitely increasing in popularity. Rich blues for a living space or deep greens for the bedroom are just a couple of the on trend shades currently being used. Vibrant colours make a dramatic statement and add vitality and interest to a space. They are not for everybody though, especially if you are about to sell your property. Neutral shades are still considered the right choice in this case. Simple white is always fresh and it provides a blank canvas for potential buyers to envisage how they would turn your home into theirs. Once the paint colour is decided upon, it’s time to select the paint type. This is an area where many DIY enthusiasts are ill advised. Firstly, always buy the best paint your budget allows for. You certainly get what you pay for when it comes to paint and who wants to be doing the same job over again in a year or two because of poor paint quality? Next, seek advice on what paint type goes best where. For example, will you use matte, semi-gloss or high gloss? Do you prefer oil or water based paint? Don’t be afraid to ask for a full explanation at your local paint store. And finally, prepare your surfaces properly. The job will look far better if your prep work is done correctly. This means cleaning, sanding and filing gaps before you even pick up a paint brush. Oh, and that’s another point, good quality brushes and rollers are a must! Craig J.
