A great party should be easy to host and easy to attend. Remember, parties are not about perfection and fussiness, but rather fun. No matter what type of event you are hosting there are some party planning tips that are always applicable. These tips are geared towards making hosting a party easier and less stressful. 1. PICK A THEME

A theme will make the party planning process so much easier because you can use it as inspiration for every aspect of your event, from invitations and decorations to food and signature drinks. A theme can be very specific, such as Masquerade or Rock Legends, or as general as a favourite colour.



Drinks: you want to avoid a mad trip to the bottle shop halfway through the night, right? There are some easy-touse online beverage calculators that will help you figure out how much alcohol and soft drink you will need for your party. Simply enter the number of hours and guests and you will have your answer. Oh, and remember to always have water available too.

Once you’ve decided on your theme, start shopping for what you need right away, especially if you will be ordering online, to save yourself from worrying about everything arriving in time.

Glasses: a good guestimate is approximately one glass per person per hour. Food: there are many variances here, but a rule of thumb is to allow eight – nine pieces of finger food per person for the average cocktail party, but increase your allowance to around 12 pieces per person if the event will go over a lunch or dinner period.

Water’s Edge has become one of Canberra’s most respected restaurants since it was originally established by Europeantrained chef James Mussillon in 2008, and it has continued to flourish since the appointment of Clement Chauvin as head chef. Mussillon says the key to the success of Water’s Edge is fresh local produce and simple, uncomplicated dishes. You can choose from a three or four course menu with dishes like braised pork cheek, jowl and crackling with celeriac puree and port poached pear; twice baked pumpkin soufflé with shaved pumpkin, parmesan tuile and sage butter; or passion fruit soufflé with lemongrass bubbles, or coconut and kaffir lime sorbet.


The Bonsai dining room seats 24 people at a large communal table, and has screened sliding doors for added privacy. The Cherry and Blossom rooms are semi-private dining spaces that both seat 8 and are divided by slatted wooden walls that look onto the hustle and bustle of the kitchen. The traditional Japanese sunken dining area seats 30 (at 5 tables of 6) and is a fun lunch or dinner-party option for when guests are happy to get up close and personal! The authentic menu melds new-style sushi with classic dishes, and special dining packages can be tailored for different tastes and dietary requirements. The menu changes with the seasons and is perfectly matched to the premium range of imported sakes. You can expect dishes like seared salmon with jalapeno sashimi and crunchy daikon slaw; seared tenderloin with braised spinach and shiitake, carrot puree and panko fried wallaby rump nuggets; and soybean, bamboo and shiitake balls with wasabi mayonnaise.


Located right on the waterfront, Alphabet Street’s fantastic cocktail menu includes drinks like the kaffir lime-flavoured bloody Mary. The modern Thai menu includes a variety of smaller dishes and share plates that are ideal for a large group. Choose from the traditional, like papaya salad and stir-fried morning glory, and the not-so-traditional, like pla lad prik (a whole sweet and sour deep-fried fish) garnished with radish, lychees, pineapple, cherry tomatoes, lilac flowers, green pepper and sliced green chilli, and prawns and peanuts wrapped in a betel leaf and encased in an egg net. Desserts aren’t always on the menu, but if it’s available Alphabet Street’s version of tiramisu is worth a try. It’s similar to the coffee-soaked sponge and mascarpone original, but comes with a surprise popping candy layer. With friendly staff, great service and a spirited atmosphere, Alphabet Street is a great location for gatherings of small-tomedium groups.
