AKI Design, a renowned Melbourne-based Interior Architecture Studio, shares highlights from Salone del Mobile in Milan, the global benchmark event for the furnishing and design sector, offering inspiration and insights on the latest trends in kitchen and bathroom design.

Salone del Mobile 2024

The event, which took place during Milan Design Week 2024, showcased an array of innovative designs and materials that are set to influence the Australian design landscape in the coming years.

The main theme of Milan Design Week 2024 was kitchen and bathroom design, with numerous brands showcasing their innovative solutions for these spaces. One of the standout installations was Gaggenau’s “The Elevation of Gravity” at Villa Necchi Campiglio, which demonstrated the brand's commitment to pushing the boundaries of kitchen design.

The AKI Design team observed several key trends that are expected to shape the future of Australian interior design:

Contemporary Shapes: Soft, organic forms were prevalent, exemplified by BD Barcelona Design/Muller van Severn’s PILLOW SOFA, the Delcourt Collection, and MDF Italia’s sofa. This signifies a shift towards more fluid and inviting designs in furniture.

Materials: Steel and aluminium took centre stage, with designers incorporating these sleek and durable materials into their creations. These materials offer a modern aesthetic while ensuring longevity and easy maintenance.

Colour Palette: Rich, deep reds and burgundy hues dominated the colour scheme at the event. This trend was evident in several exhibitions, such as GUCCI’s ‘Design Ancora’ exhibition curated by creative director Sabato De Sarno.

Lighting Innovations: Brands like FLOS and Loewe showcased stunning lighting installations that combined artistry with functionality. FLOS’s dazzling installation at Palazzo Visconti seamlessly blended past and present, while Loewe’s creative director, Jonathan Anderson, commissioned international artists and artisans to explore ‘illumination within the house,’ resulting in captivating pieces such as a woven leather light and ceramic candles.

Kitchen and Bathroom Solutions: Alongside Gaggenau’s impressive installation, other brands also presented forward-thinking kitchen and bathroom designs. Henry Timi and Swiss home appliances brand V-Zug unveiled their inaugural Milan showroom, combining soft hues, natural materials, and high-tech appliances in a space that encapsulates “poetic simplicity.” Kohler collaborated with designer Samual Ross to create a playful and colourful bathroom installation that challenged conventional scales.

Immersive Experiences: Google's immersive light and sound installation, “Making Sense of Colour,” created in collaboration with arts and research lab Chromasonic, further emphasised the importance of colour in design and its ability to evoke emotions and create a desired atmosphere.

The design community also paid homage to the late Gaetano Pesce, a pioneering Italian designer who passed away earlier this year. His presence was felt throughout the event, with many designers drawing inspiration from his innovative and unconventional approach to design.

Other noteworthy exhibits included Saint Laurent’s display of Gio Ponti classic plates and the Linea Mini coffee machine, a collaboration between Rimowa and La Marzocco. The machine combines Rimowa's signature grooved panels, made in their Cologne factory, with La Marzocco’s expertise in coffee machine manufacturing from their Florence factory, resulting in a stunning piece that bridges the gap between design and functionality.

As AKI Design prepares to incorporate these fresh insights and inspirations into their own projects, Australian homeowners and design enthusiasts can look forward to a new wave of innovative and stylish kitchen and bathroom solutions that reflect the latest global trends while catering to the unique needs and preferences of the Australian market, ensuring spaces that are functional, visually captivating, and on the cutting edge of design. ■

Butter Montadito P rawn Pimenton &

This open-faced Spanish sandwich is a favourite tapas starter from chef Matt McConnell at Melbourne’s ever-popular food and wine destination, Bar Lourinhã.

Ingredients Method

Pimentón Butter

150 g unsalted butter, diced and softened at room temperature

2 tsp smoked paprika (pimentón)

1 tsp Espelette pepper*

1 tsp salt

1/2 tsp white pepper

Prawn Mix

8 medium-sized cooked prawns, roughly sliced

1/2 lemon (zest only)

1 tsp Espelette pepper

75 ml extra virgin lemon oil

1 pinch sea salt

1 pinch black pepper

Montadito and garnish

1/2 loaf white sourdough

Olive oil for brushing

Sea salt for seasoning

Espelette pepper for garnish

Bronze fennel fronds for garnish

Makes 12 Tapas

Preheat the oven to 200°C.

For the butter, place all ingredients in a mixing bowl and mix well. Set aside at room temperature before using.

For the prawn mix, combine all ingredients in a bowl. Check for seasoning.

Slice the bread into twelve 1cm thick slices and gently oil and season with sea salt. Place on a baking tray and bake until golden. You may need to turn the montadito halfway through cooking.

Once golden, remove from the oven and brush liberally with the butter mix. Place a spoonful of the prawn mix on top. Garnish with Espelette pepper and fennel fronds.

*Espelette pepper is a mild chilli pepper from the Basque region and is a staple of Basque cuisine.

Changing gears changing lives

Marshall White colleagues are back in the saddle, partnering with Chain Reaction to support sick children and their families. The annual corporate cycling event inspires individuals and businesses to unite and make a difference in the lives of those facing the toughest of challenges.

This year, two deserving Melbourne-based charities, Monash Children's Hospital and the Starlight Children's Foundation, have been chosen as the beneficiaries of the fundraising efforts. Tom Hayne, a Sales Executive at Marshall White and passionate cyclist, explains the importance of these organisations.

“Monash Children's Hospital is dedicated to providing cuttingedge technology to enhance the independence of infants and children,” Hayne shares. “The funds raised will help upgrade equipment and increase staffing, ensuring the best possible care for young patients.”

He also highlights the Starlight Children's Foundation's mission to create a happy and fun environment for children during challenging times. “The Starlight Express Rooms and Captain Starlight Programs bring joy and laughter to families when they need it most,” Hayne adds.

Since 2018, Marshall White employees have raised an impressive $1 million for Chain Reaction. This year, five dedicated colleagues – Harry Bongiorno, Alan Crawford, Tom Hayne, Justin Holod, and Kaine Lanyon – are ready to take on the challenge and make a positive impact.

Justin Holod, a Director at Marshall White and fellow cyclist, shares his motivation: “As a keen cyclist, getting involved in the Chain Reaction Challenge was a very easy decision for me. The organisation is highly regarded in the cycling community and is an excellent way to test the riders' mental and physical capabilities to raise much-needed funds for kids in need through Monash Children's Hospital and Starlight Children's Foundation, two very worthy causes.”

The funds raised will directly support the vital work of these charities, enabling Monash Children’s Hospital to provide better care and shorter wait times and allowing Starlight Children's Foundation to continue spreading joy to children and their families.
