This week, we spoke to Corey Ashford, the creative force behind the eponymous brand COREY ASHFORD. In our conversation, Corey shared insights into the brand's philosophy, creative process, and exciting plans for the future.

What inspired you to establish your namesake lifestyle label in 2016, and how has your vision for slow, considered living shaped the brand?

The brand originally focused on oversized, block-coloured linen beach throws that I hand-dyed and sewed myself, as I could not find what I was looking for on the market - the typical genesis of a business.

Over the years, COREY ASHFORD has organically evolved to include tableware, barware, incense, and lifestyle pieces. My intention for CA has always been a leisurely expansion and exploration into enhancing daily activities, turning them into elevated rituals, with a focus on fine materiality and a showcase of handmade skill.

In your creations, beauty and function are equally important. Could you explain how this philosophy impacts your designs?

There's no point bringing a useable piece into your home that looks good, only to make your life harder through lack of function. Similarly, there are plenty of objects in the world that will get the job done, but they're void of character, charm or enrichment. Whether designing my own pieces or investing in somebody else's, for me, it's about taking the mundanity out of tasks and 'luxuriously lifting the everyday'.

You've spoken about the inspiration you draw from nature and the simplicity of daily surroundings. How have these inspirations manifested in a specific product?

A spill of liquid on the table inspired the amorphous appearance of my Cocktail Coasters, while my incense and candle holders are inspired by shells and French baked goods. There is a wealth of inspiration all around us, even in the simplest of daily occurrences.

Seeing market gaps as design opportunities, could you explain how this concept is reflected in your designs?

Designing, prototyping and manufacturing is a long and involved process, so it’s one I undertake with thought and consideration. I focus on investing my time in pieces that add something new to the market, both functionally and aesthetically. I live with my pieces long before they’re released to the world to ensure they’re enhancing my daily life and, ultimately, the lives of the people who welcome them into their own homes.

What is your idea of everyday luxury?

I believe every moment should be enjoyed and that we can transform simple daily activities into elevated rituals. Eating your takeaway on your best plates or pulling out the good table linen for breakfast by yourself – for me, incorporating good design and fine materials into everyday activities is a simple way to enhance what can otherwise be monotonous.

What vision do you have for the future of COREY ASHFORD?

We're already looking at a full 2024, glittered with new products, brand collaborations, and exciting opportunities, taking us well into next year. While we're expanding rapidly internationally, we're also looking at ways to strengthen foundations in Australia, with a physical space for people to experience the forms and scents in person. Ultimately, I look to the future of CA with optimism and gratitude, to be able to do what I love and have it received with such positivity, excitement, and support by the community. ■

Melbourne Design Week, Australia's largest and leading annual design festival, is set to captivate audiences with its eighth edition from May 23 to June 2, 2024. This 11-day extravaganza will feature over 300 innovative exhibitions, displays, symposiums, and talks throughout metropolitan Melbourne and regional Victoria.

Under the theme 'Design the world you want,' the 2024 program focuses on the use of energy, ethics, and ecology to encourage positive change, reimagine existing systems, and offer innovative design solutions to complex global challenges. The event aims to showcase how design can champion new technologies to enact society's transition to renewables, demonstrate how design can be guided by societal values, and invite designers to respond to the physical environment while considering the influence of nature.

Presented by Creative Victoria and delivered by the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV), Melbourne Design Week serves as a vital platform for emerging and established creative practitioners, offering the Australian design community and audiences the opportunity to engage with a diverse program of events.

Program highlights at the NGV include a keynote talk by Nigerian architect Tosin Oshinowo, who will share insights into her socially responsive approaches to urbanism, and a public symposium held in anticipation of the upcoming NGV exhibition Reimagining Birrarung: Design Concepts for 2070. The Melbourne Art Book Fair celebrates its tenth year with a talk by UK-based curator and author Katy Hessel, along with artist and designer activations, workshops, and the popular stallholder fair.

The Victoria and Albert Museum's Senior Curator of Africa and Diaspora Textiles and Fashion, Dr. Christine Checinska, will deliver a keynote talk, accompanied by public programs curated by Africa Fashion Program CoCurator Dorcas Maphakela, highlighting the diverse fashion culture of the African continent.

Satellite program Design and Death, presented by Open House Melbourne, will explore the relationship between design and death through talks and tours, while the Mercedes-Benz Australia Annual Melbourne Design Week Award will recognise an outstanding contribution to the event.

The Melbourne Design Week Film Festival will present a series of films that explore the impact of architecture and design through the moving image, while leading showrooms, brands, and design studios will participate with exhibitions at various venues across the city.

Speculative design exhibitions and programs will examine approaches to sustainability and design solutions for the future, with designer Ella Saddington presenting Material Matters and the exhibition MATTERS exploring themes of process, community, and longevity.

The Telstra Creativity Innovation Series: Future of Food will continue to champion new approaches to food and waste, exploring eco-innovation and potential solutions for environmental preservation.

Tony Ellwood AM, Director of NGV, emphasises the importance of Melbourne Design Week as a platform for design practitioners throughout the country, providing a showcase for their work and encouraging critical thought that will help shape the future. From commercial design objects to effective design solutions, the program of over 300 events demonstrates how Australia is leading design innovation globally. ■

Fried Rice

Tiger Prawns

Discover the secrets behind Thai Tide's Tom Yum Fried Rice with Tiger Prawns, a beloved dish from their lineup of vibrant and bold Thai regional cuisine.

Ingredients

400g cooked jasmine rice, cooled

400g tiger prawns, peeled and deveined

100g mushrooms, sliced

2 tablespoons vegetable oil

2 tablespoons Tom Yum paste (recipe below)

1 tablespoon fish sauce

1 tablespoon soy sauce

1 tablespoon lime juice

2 tablespoons sugar

Fresh coriander leaves, for garnish Lime wedges, for serving

Tom Yum Paste

10 dried long red chillies, deseeded and soaked in hot water

4 cloves garlic

2 shallots, peeled

1 stalk lemongrass, tough outer layers removed and sliced

1 thumb-sized piece of galangal, peeled and sliced

3 kaffir lime leaves, stems removed

1 teaspoon salt

2 tablespoons vegetable oil

Serves 2

Method

Instructions for Tom Yum Paste

Blend all ingredients in a food processor until smooth. Heat vegetable oil in a skillet, add the paste, and cook for 5-7 minutes until fragrant.

Let the paste cool before storing it in an airtight container in the refrigerator.

Cooking Instructions

Heat a grill or grill pan over medium-high heat.

Lightly grease the grill or pan with vegetable oil.

Grill the tiger prawns for 2-3 minutes on each side until they turn pink and opaque.

Remove from the grill and set aside.

In the same pan, sauté the Tom Yum paste until fragrant.

Add mushrooms and cook until softened.

Add cooked jasmine rice, breaking up clumps, and stir-fry for 2-3 minutes.

Mix in fish sauce, soy sauce, lime juice, and sugar.

Return the grilled tiger prawns to the pan and toss everything together until heated through.

Adjust seasoning to taste.

Garnish with fresh coriander leaves.

Serve with lime wedges.

Note: If making Tom Yum paste from scratch is not an option, you can find instant Tom Yum paste at most grocery stores or online. Look for it in the international foods section or in the Asian foods aisle.
