Darren Palmer This week, we are joined by prominent Australian interior designer, Darren Palmer. Renowned for his accessible luxury approach and diverse industry contributions, Darren offers invaluable insights into his world. How did you embark on your career in interior design, what inspired you to choose this path, and what initial steps did you take to establish yourself in the industry? Ever since I understood the concept of working for a living, my aspiration was to “make houses,” though I wasn’t sure what form that would take. In Gladstone, Queensland, where architecture and interior design were not typical career paths, I pursued fine art and graphic design and spent a decade in advertising and design. A turning point was renovating an apartment, which was featured in Belle’s renovation issue, showcasing my skills and leading to a mentorship. This transitioned my focus to interior design, resulting in a growing portfolio, two published books, and various opportunities. How would you describe your own personal style in interior design, and how does this aesthetic influence your work? My own style, adaptable to the location of the home, can be overarchingly described as Australian contemporary, being definitely inspired by the colours and materials found in the Australian landscape. I tend to gravitate toward work that allows me to creatively direct and work with external teams on larger projects, rather than individual residential homes. My most recent projects include my own home renovation, as well as a subdivision new build at my home in Bondi Beach, a multi-level apartment building in Canberra, and a luxury new home build in Miami, QLD, for the Yourtown Christmas prize home. How has the interior design landscape in Australia changed and evolved throughout the years? It’s changed dramatically. The interior design and media landscape is relatively new. Stylists, once limited to print media, now have the opportunity to self-publish on social platforms. Clients, informed and influenced by platforms like Instagram and Pinterest, expect high-quality results. Shows like ‘The Block’ demonstrate rapid completion times, challenging real-world client expectations. However, clients’ increasing design knowledge is beneficial, reducing the gap for effective communication of ideas. A common design language further eases the exchange of ideas between designers and clients.
Since 2017, you have significantly expanded your brand in the design world. Could you tell us about this progression and your newest product range? 2023 has been a big year with the launch of a rug range, an art range, and a home fragrance range, all under my own brand and available with wide distribution to an array of trusted brands in the home retail space, such as Temple and Webster, Carpet Court, OZ design furniture, Freedom, Myer, and many other retailers, both small and large, across Australia. It’s been a busy and challenging time, but ultimately very rewarding, seeing the ideas and iterations of products come together as one cohesive range designed specifically to be sustainable, eco-conscious, ethically sourced, and with the goal to democratise good design. I have created products that are either made in Australia or certified to help the communities overseas in which they’re made. The products are created, crafted, and curated to offer a whole home solution, all available at darrenpalmer.com. What emerging trends in interior design excite you the most, and how do you plan to incorporate these into your future work? I’m more intrigued by customer psychology than trends, though certain trends are enduring into 2024, like modern Mediterranean, minimalism, and maximalism. We’ll see earthy tones continue, with a shift from cool greys to colours like Pantone’s “Peach Fuzz,” influencing hues and textures, including wide thick corduroy and shag pile-like textures in furniture. For those embarking on a build or renovation project, what key piece of advice would you offer? Develop a detailed brief with your objectives, budget, timeframe, and scope, and stick to it. Use a visual guide aligned with your goals for better decision-making. Adhere to your brief to control costs. Understand your project’s market and assess your property’s value, including all costs, to set a spending limit. Research market preferences to ensure your investment aligns with potential returns or to avoid overinvestment in case of an unexpected sale.

Recipe
30ml Lustau Vermut Blanco
Cut a wedge of citrus (orange or grapefruit) and set aside for garnish
30ml Maidenii Roselle 20ml soda (optional)
Fill the glass with ice Add Lustau Vermut Blanco and Maidenii Roselle
Equipment
Stir for 10 seconds
Bar spoon
Top with a dash of soda and garnish
Short rocks glass Bar knife and board
Marinated octopus on toast with spicy tomato dressing Poached octopus
To serve (serves 4, 2 pieces per person)
1 cup olive brine (use the liquid from your favourite jar of olives in brine)
8 pieces toasted baguette sliced on an angle 2 tablespoons aioli or mayonnaise
1 sprig thyme 2 garlic cloves
500g octopus tentacles
Half fill a small saucepan with water (approximately 1 litre) and add the brine, thyme, garlic, orange skin and salt. Place over high heat and bring to the boil. Add the octopus, cover with a lid, and reduce to a simmer. Cook gently for 40 minutes to 1 hour until the octopus is tender.
Marinade
Remove the octopus, pat dry and place in the fridge until completely cool.
4 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
Combine the marinade ingredients in a bowl.
1 teaspoon chopped parsley
Remove the octopus from the fridge and thinly slice, add to the marinade and gently mix together so the octopus is evenly coated.
2 pieces orange skin A pinch of salt
1 teaspoon smoked paprika Salt to taste Spicy tomato dressing 2 tomatoes, diced 1 tablespoon chili oil
Combine all the ingredients for the tomato dressing in a small bowl and stir to combine. To serve, spread each slice of toasted baguette with some aioli or mayonnaise, some of the tomato dressing and top with a few slices of octopus.
½ teaspoon smoked paprika 1 tablespoon white balsamic vinegar Salt to taste

Know My Name Australian Women Artists
The Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery (MPRG) is currently presenting the “Know My Name: Australian Women Artists” exhibition, open until 18 February. Featuring over 60 works by 56 female artists, the gallery marks the first stop on a two-year tour by the National Gallery of Australia. MPRG offers an opportunity for visitors to immerse themselves in the art and stories of some of Australia’s most influential women artists. The exhibition is a continuation of the National Gallery’s major two-part exhibition held between 2020 and 2022, recognised as one of the most comprehensive presentations of art by women in Australia. Danny Lacy, Director of Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery, described the touring exhibition as a major achievement for the region. “Know My Name celebrates women and art throughout Australia, and we are honoured to be the first venue showing this collection of important works, right here in Mornington. This exhibition will create conversation and spark inspiration and I admire the perseverance and passion the team at the National Gallery of Australia have invested into this touring event which will amplify women artists across galleries around the world,” said Danny.
“Know My Name” encompasses a diverse range of works from the national collection, including delicate portrait drawings by Janet-Cumbrae Stewart and Margaret Preston’s widely admired “Flapper” from 1925. The exhibition offers a historical journey through time, featuring groundbreaking feminist pieces from the 1970s and ‘80s by artists like Vivienne Binns, including her renowned “Mothers’ Memories, Others’ Memories”, with additional contributions from collectives such as the Women’s Domestic Needlework Group.
A vital aspect of “Know My Name” is the representation of First Nations artists. The exhibition proudly showcases magnificent paintings by Emily Kam Kngwarray and Mirdidingkingathi Juwarnda Sally Gabori, offering a glimpse into unique Indigenous Australian artworks. This touring exhibition is a part of the National Gallery’s broader “Know My Name” initiative – a series of ongoing gender equity programs aimed at increasing the representation of women artists, who have often been overlooked in published histories and public collections. “Know My Name: Australian Women Artists” tells a new story of Australian art, focusing on moments when women created novel forms of art and cultural commentary. It emphasises the creative and intellectual relationships between artists, bringing a fresh perspective on Australia’s artistic heritage. MPRG invites visitors to explore the inspiring works of these pioneering women; a celebration of diversity, history, and the spirit of Australian women artists. “Know My Name” is an immersive experience into the heart of Australia’s cultural and artistic evolution, led by women who dared to make their names known. Rise of the luxury apartment market The luxury apartment market will see an increase in 2024, particularly with the rise of international and interstate buyers expected to breathe new life into this sector. Offthe-plan luxury residences, especially those featuring cutting-edge amenities and sustainable living options, are increasingly appealing to discerning buyers. These purchasers value the combination of contemporary, low-maintenance lifestyles and the potential for strong future resale value, positioning luxury apartments as highly attractive investment opportunities.
