RELEASE THE FEAR'S BRIDGING POSSIBILITIES =

Thank you to the Education Association for supporting Release the Fear. This report reflects how our facilitators effectively use the creative processes of the "Bridging Possibilities" program to enlighten and enrich the lives of our youth "Bridging Possibilities" is a Character Education program designed to inspire and empower our youth with essential life skills so they are given the opportunity to make better life choices, find their inherent gifts, and know that they matter; thus allowing them to lead a more productive life and perhaps become tomorrow's leaders in Arizona and around the world. The following information reflect the results of collected data from 135 young people who collaboratively experienced one of three “Bridging Possibilities� workshops.

hat: Release the Fear, a non-profit health and human services organization, teaches Arizona’s youth the

life skills needed to combat the effects of Peer Pressure, Gang involvement, Bullying, Abuse, and Violence in our society and to make better life choices. Release the Fear (RTF) has worked with thousands of at-risk youth and adults in Arizona and around the world, offering experiential programs that help reverse the paralyzing effects of fear and diminished self-worth. Our programs encourage youth to explore safe and healthy lifestyles and to overcome disabilities through the development of leadership and social skills through evidence-based curriculum that meets National Common Core standards. H

ow: These programs stimulate whole-brain thinking and develop metacognitive thought processing by utilizing new

applied-knowledge teaching methods. These programs demonstrate options that awaken a creative consciousness and expose the unlimited potential of critical thinking and problem solving to help participants develop better cognitive behavioral skills. Our trained facilitators guide participants through interactive creative activities and analytically explore the connectedness to their lives. Release the Fear utilizes inquiry-based learning experiences, an educational practice where the teacher/facilitator uses controlled questioning to serve as a learning guide in order to move students towards new understandings. Educational research shows that student retention increases when new learning is discovered through inquiry practices, as the student is able to take ownership of these findings. The teacher/facilitator must act as guide while being an expert questioner, thinking of the end objective at all times and posing questions to allow students to reach ideas on their own. When this is done, students are able to create new thought patterns which connect and build on their applied knowledge and personal life goals. Without these essential life skills, the still- maturing minds of detained youth view their future as bleak with no hope for a “normal” life.

pproach: Through experiential programs, we encourage participants to develop valuable core life skills, better critical

problem solving, and a healthy sense of understanding of self and others. Through the RTF programs, participants discover that anything is possible, that they have a purpose in life. They see why they do matter to the world, to the community, and most of all to themselves.

T

ransformation: The Maricopa County Juvenile Probation Office released a 2010 report demonstrating the value of

Inside Out Bridging Possibilities workshops on 357 of their juvenile population. Thirty percent of incarcerated youth recidivate—meaning three out of ten will again find themselves in conflict with law and society and back behind bars.

For the incarcerated youth who participated in just one Release the Fear workshop, that recidivism figure dropped by 23 percent. For those who were able to benefit from multiple workshops, it dropped by 16 percent - nearly half. That is an impressive impact on any child’s future as well as the community in general..

Release the Fear, Inc. has worked with youth in Arizona and internationally, in such places as Guam and El Salvador, instilling positive life changes for thousands.

Release the Fear Workshop Participants 2012 to 2015

Average of 450-500 Arizona youth per year have found themselves in secure care or behind the fence at Arizona Department of Juvenile Corrections (ADJC) Out of that a three year longitudinal study was conducted 2012-2015 on 928 youth that participated in the Release the Fear program.

For eleven years, Release the Fear has had the opportunity to interact with over 11,000 disadvantage and at-risk youth; these youth now know they have a life purpose. They know their wishes and dreams can come true. They know they are worth it and that they matter!

Our evidence-based curriculum has helped troubled kids in schools, jails, detention, and treatment centers. Through the creative processes of art, music, and communication, we teach kids cognitive behavioral skills to build self-esteem. They learn tools to help them succeed in school, conflict resolution, and to address peer pressure, and bullying.

Between the years 2007 and 2017, Release the Fear has shown constant improvement upon youth’s pre-and post-reporting’s learned about perceptions of themselves.

In addition, during the years of 2012 and 2017, Release the Fear has contributed to an overall improvement of youth’s self-reported willingness to assist another if bullied. Despite a decline of reported learning’s about proactive options to prevent being bullied, their learning consistently remained over 78 percent.

The students are divided into groups or teams that they remain with throughout the workshop. In their small group, the students may be asked to complete an activity, to share responses, or to reflect on an exercise. Often times these groups can have students with different beliefs, various backgrounds, and even opposing gang affiliations.

The workshop will end with a group created painting to be displayed for the public.

Before I came in here I did some really bad stuff and now when I realized what I did I’m not gonna be able to see my brothers or sisters. / When my brother died I used to be sad about it but through time I look at it as he’s like my keeper looking over me. / When I went to court and they wanted to keep me and kept me I was mad, but then I was happy because I did something good with my time. I go to school and got my food handler’s card and I’m also clean. I’m not smoking any more weed. / When I went to Canyon State because I got introduced to track and now it’s my favorite and first sport that I did. / When I was first going to school I used to think it was a waste of time but now that I am older I realized I need school. / Being in Durango, now I’m learning new skills that I wouldn’t know if I was still on the streets. / One time I was playing basketball and this boy kept fouling me and I was like if he fouls me one more time it’s on, but then I realized no, I shouldn’t do that because I need to control my anger. / Being in here. / When I went to court I didn’t go home. They said Imma have to go to a treatment center. But I hated it, it will help me with my substance problems. If I would of went home, I probably would of messed up again. / When I was stuck in a drug and I wanted help and I ended up in Durango. I’m happier cuz I’m clean and I eat good. / The time I was homeless for a year. It was bad at first, but now I realized I’ve experienced things that changed me completely for the better.

This workshop took place on December 19-21, 2017 #3 of 14 Opening up possibilities for the young minds of Arizona’s youth for a brighter tomorrow.© “Bridging Possibility” workshops.

Through stories, activities and artwork, Release the Fear’s Workshops will help students to:  Draw One’s Fears and Awaken Hopes and Dreams  Stimulate Creative Listening and Communication  Bridge Understanding  Discuss How Color Affects Us and Our Environment Senses  Heighten Visual Awareness of Our Environment  Turn Pain into Possibilities into Purpose.

The students are divided into groups or teams that they remain with throughout the workshop. In their small group, the students may be asked to complete an activity, to share responses, or to reflect on an exercise. Often times these groups can have students with different beliefs, various backgrounds, and even opposing gang affiliations.

The workshop will end with a group created painting to be displayed for the public.

How do you think this activity could help you in your daily life (In School, Out of School, or In Your Career)?

Who am I? : Similarities, express yourself, and honesty. People in schools have a lot of similarities. People who get bullied may have the same similarities. Similarities show what people have in common with each other. / Similarities, honest, express yourself. To talk to people when I know who you associate with. Help the person being bullied. Thinking before you act. / Similarities, trustworthiness, confidence. Use your personality. Stick of gum, help dude cross the street.

Creative story telling: Being able to analyze the situation. Being able to fluff an essay so it will be five pages long.

Telling a bully some dreams. Stay apart so he can’t beat up that kid over there. Being able to tell your boss some awesome explanation about why he should hire you. / Teamwork, mutual respect. How to work with classmates and respect other classmates talking. Stand up for what’s right. Stand together to accomplish a goal. Respect people’s boundaries. / Teamwork, cooperation, agreement effort. It helps you when a person comes to working with someone or a group. Person gives you many different options in helping people who are bullies. This applies in life because if you get a job you’ll need these skills.

Mirror work: Look at Yourself in the eyes (ONLY) and tell yourself that you love or like yourself just the way you are: It makes me feel happy. Hero: TV Pac doesn’t just rap about his own struggles, he raps about world problems that are still going on today.

We can change. Someone I can kind of relate to. / Because he was there for me at hard times and didn’t call me by my first name. / My dad because he taught me everything. / God is my hero. He is my savior, my father, lord. /My hero is my brother. They’re important to me because they’re my family. / Not really a hero but someone I look

up to and can really relate. They speak the truth he’s blunt. / It’s my mom because she’s been through the worst but she is an amazing woman and she is very successful. Because she is my safe place. She is number one woman. / My mom because a hero to me is someone that helps always in a good way. Help, support, admire and care. / Ms. Ersila and my God because she puts her time and effort into helping others and being honest and caring. Honesty. Mask off.

Reflective Take Away Assignment: Confidence, humbleness, honesty, and centered. Be honest about needing help and not feeling embarrassed. In school it’s important because if you don’t use these skills. School can be hard on you. Describe a time when you had an experience that you perceived (though/saw) as negative, but through time or something you did, you perceived (thought/saw) the experience as a positive one. : When my brother used to bully me I thought it was negative but seeing the positive person my brother’s become I look up to him. / The first time I got drunk it changed the way I look at people in a good way. / I felt when it happened and at the end. / I felt like I released a bit of stress and was able to have a little happiness. When I’m in a mad state of mind and release the fear of not going home. / I thought that participating in getting a job was negative because the system is corrupt, but robbing and stealing from people who aren’t the one corrupting is wrong. / I felt more open and not judged, more confident with my mom and I love myself. Be true to who I am. / I thought my dad was always picking on me until he told me when I stop yelling and being mean to you is the day I stop caring. / My mom always told me never trust nobody that there’s no such thing as a good soul. She always said to kick away the negative around me that they want to see me do bad they want to see me fall. / I use to think that when people would criticize or try and correct my behavior that they didn’t like me when in reality they were trying to better me.

9 young lives from Durango Juvenile Detention experienced their Possibilities.

This workshop took place on January 23-25, 2018 #5 of 14 Opening up possibilities for the young minds of Arizona’s youth for a brighter tomorrow.© “Bridging Possibility” workshops.

Through stories, activities and artwork, Release the Fear’s Workshops will help students to:  Draw One’s Fears and Awaken Hopes and Dreams  Stimulate Creative Listening and Communication  Bridge Understanding  Discuss How Color Affects Us and Our Environment Senses  Heighten Visual Awareness of Our Environment  Turn Pain into Possibilities into Purpose.

The students are divided into groups or teams that they remain with throughout the workshop. In their small group, the students may be asked to complete an activity, to share responses, or to reflect on an exercise. Often times these groups can have students with different beliefs, various backgrounds, and even opposing gang affiliations.

The workshop will end with a group created painting to be displayed for the public.

How do you think this activity could help you in your daily life (In School, Out of School, or In Your Career)?

Who am I? : Learn more about others. Communication with teachers and peers. Communicate to the bully to leave you alone or get help. Communicate with people. / Kid with hope, dreams. Hope you can finish school.

The bully will see that you work harder than him. Hope will help you succeed in life. / Similarities. Turn our negatives to positive. Put differences aside and focus on what we have in common. Treat everybody with respect.

Creative storytelling: Teamwork. You get your assignments done. It will help stop bullying. Get things done with your job. / Humor and good with people. He plays the same position in football as me and has pushed me to be the greatest I can be on the field and in school.

Through the Hoops: How to work with others. When you have projects with others. To be able to talk with them.

When you see bullying happening you can communicate with staff. Communication is an everyday skill that you need to succeed. / Flexibility. Even though we don’t like school, it’s going to get you further in life. Be understanding about it. Stuff you don’t wanna do be flexible because it’s going to be worth it in the long run.

Seeing Beyond: Imagination to see more in life. Art because you can see more writing, math, science, acting.

Art, architect. / Focus on reality. History/science, you have to focus on what’s real and false. See past negative people and situations. / Creativity. Extra curricular, useful for art. Helps stand out.

Describe a time when you had an experience that you perceived as negative, but through time or something you did, you perceived the experience as a positive one. When my mom told me to stop doing. / I thought being a cornerback wasn’t a good position in football, but then as time went on, I seen that every position is important and I was good at my position. / The first time I got locked up and thought it was negative, but this time around being here it was positive. / The time I got caught in a stolen car teached me not to be in any more cars like because it gets you places you don’t wanna be in. / I thought being in Durango was negative but over the years it turned out to be positive. / I feel like I got a bunch of weight off my shoulders and I feel a lot better.

Have friends that will have your back. You can get a job as a social worker. / Honesty, respect, communication, learning about others. How to be successful and realistic. Helping or calling adult. Through stories, activities and artwork, Release the Fear’s Workshops will help students to:  Draw One’s Fears and Awaken Hopes and Dreams  Stimulate Creative Listening and Communication  Bridge Understanding  Discuss How Color Affects Us and Our Environment Senses  Heighten Visual Awareness of Our Environment  Turn Pain into Possibilities into Purpose.

The students are divided into groups or teams that they remain with throughout the workshop. In their small group, the students may be asked to complete an activity, to share responses, or to reflect on an exercise. Often times these groups can have students with different beliefs, various backgrounds, and even opposing gang affiliations.

The workshop will end with a group created painting to be displayed for the public.

How do you think this activity could help you in your daily life (In School, Out of School, or In Your Career)?

Who am I? : Honesty, courage. The courage to stand up to the bully. It will make bullies think. Courage to move into college. / Loyalty. Not to steal from others, not to ditch. We are loyal to the bully so he might be loyal back.

Teach your kids to be loyal. / Honesty, choices. Choosing to show up on time. To choose to help if you see it. To choose to not be lazy and show up and be ready to work.

Creative Storytelling: Skills or Tools Learned: By helping others. By stopping bullying. To be an all- around good citizen. / Cooperation. With the teacher, group agreements. Who am I? : Listening. Helps be involved, listening to teacher. Listen to person being bullied. Listen to boss. / Be honest. Being honest on why your homework isn’t complete. Share with an adult. Accepting who you are. / Communication, honesty, listening. Being honest with teachers, listening in school, and communicate with others.

Being honest when a kid is being bullied. This applies in life like when you are going to an interview and being honest when taking a test.

Confidence can help you with peer pressure by having confidence and saying no. You’re going to have confidence for the rest of your life. / Self-respect. Respect the grades we got. Describe a time when you had an experience that you perceived (thought/saw) as negative, but through time or something you did, you perceived (thought/saw) as a positive: Poured out cereal into a bowl then realized I had no milk. Then my mom came home with milk and more groceries and my cereal was really good. / I went to Durango mean while I am locked up I want to do good when I get out. / I don’t have a negative thought before we just play game that worked at it. / I overdosed and thought I never want to go through that now I’m sober. / Being her made me change. Just make my change now on the good side. / I’m here at Durango locked up. When I get out I want to do good. / When I got to Durango I was thinking negative. That I am going to get released and after a couple of weeks and what I saw from other kids that try to be good and talk to the PC’s about leaving and my PC came and said that I was doing good and talked about me going home on a pass this Tuesday.

This workshop took place on April 3-5, 2018 #10 of 14 Opening up possibilities for the young minds of Arizona’s youth for a brighter tomorrow.© “Bridging Possibility” workshops.

Through stories, activities and artwork, Release the Fear’s Workshops will help students to:  Draw One’s Fears and Awaken Hopes and Dreams  Stimulate Creative Listening and Communication  Bridge Understanding  Discuss How Color Affects Us and Our Environment Senses  Heighten Visual Awareness of Our Environment  Turn Pain into Possibilities into Purpose.

The students are divided into groups or teams that they remain with throughout the workshop. In their small group, the students may be asked to complete an activity, to share responses, or to reflect on an exercise. Often times these groups can have students with different beliefs, various backgrounds, and even opposing gang affiliations.

The workshop will end with a group created painting to be displayed for the public.

How do you think this activity could help you in your daily life (In School, Out of School, or In Your Career)?

Who am I?: Communication, participation, we showed respect towards others. Be someone better, willing to learn, help others out. Talk it out and not jump to a conclusion. Use these tools, motivated to achieve goals, be successful / Respect, honesty, bonding. Helping each other out. If you show friendship. They make you more of a respectable person / Trust, communication, bonding. Make friends, ask questions, open minded, comfortable. You will have help, backup. More successful, more connections, open minded.

Mirror work: Look at Yourself in the eyes (ONLY) and tell yourself that you love or like yourself just the way you are: Empowered / When I put my mind to something I can do it / Made me feel great / Made me feel good / It makes me feel confident in myself / It makes me feel alright about myself / Warm on the inside / It made me feel good about myself / It makes me feel good about myself.

Responsible, honest, caring / My mom. She has always been there for me. Without her I wouldn’t be who I am today. Respect, trust, care, fairness and most of all love / My g/f, been together for 4 years. She inspires me, makes me feel good about what I do and pushes me to work harder. Courage, hardworking, loyalty, committed and empowering / My mom. She is the woman that gave me birth, always cares about me. Responsibility, communication / My father and mother. Patience / My mom. She has always been supporting me no matter what the situation is and she is very caring. Bravery and independent.

Creative Storytelling: Critical thinking, planning, participation. Ideas, creativity. Knowing what to do and knowing how to solve the situation in different scenarios. Describe a time when you had an experience that you perceived (thought/saw) as negative, but through time or something you did, you perceived (thought/saw) as a positive: When I got with my girlfriend. I thought she was just another girl but we ended up connecting like never before. So we built a life together, saved money for a car and we will have a child. We have been together for 4 years going on 5 / When me and my cousin got shot at. Turned our lives around because we both got out of gang violence / One time I was getting my haircut by a girl and I thought she would mess it up and she actually did pretty good. I felt worried but then I felt good / When I stole cars and money it was negative and then I went to the mall with my friends and bought shows and clothes for myself / Being in a place I shouldn’t have grew up at.

Drawing one’s Fears, Hopes and Dreams and Sharing: Being creative or open to trying things and just trying to be brave. Doing what you are supposed to do, working hard and being dedicated and things will pay off. This will help dealing with fear sometimes you have to face them and hope for the best. By doing what you put your mind to don’t doubt yourself and don’t care what others think or say / Courage, presenting, confidence. You have the courage and confidence to present in front of your peers. By standing up to those bullys. Practice for job interview and speak clearly and loudly / Active listening, drawing, imagination, brave. Expression, participation. Problem solving, different ways to do nothing. Who am I?: Information, trust, respect. Respect your teachers and gain info. You show respect and he might respect you. Respect your parents, trust your friends, and learn / Truth / Honesty- Responsibility. Doing the work your teacher says. It will let you know if you and the bully have things in common. Truth will get you further in life. / Respect. Treat others how you want to be treated. It can take you further in life.

Describe a time when you had an experience that you perceived (thought/saw) as negative, but through time or something you did, you perceived (thought/saw) as a positive: Being here helping me get sober and a chance to get clean / When I first got in detention I was pissed – but I realized I can’t stay mad forever / Going to school I thought I was negative but after a while I started liking it to be honest / When I seen somebody die in front of me, and I moved on from what I have seen / When I turned myself to Durango then they let me go the next week / My friend got shot because of something he had nothing to do with so ever since then I’ve stayed vested up and it saved me when I got shot twice. Or when my brother died I would play Russian roulette to see if I deserved to live and now I have my purpose which is my son / The negative was coming back to Durango and the positive was going to school again / My dad got locked up when I was 7.

How do you think this activity could help you in your daily life (In School, Out of School, or In Your Career)?

Who am I?: We learned each other’s struggles, learned how much pain we have inside each other. We can talk to a counselor, this can help because they’ll understand how much pain you have already been in, Try to think about what they’re going through before we judge them / Trust. Someone to talk to. Open up to an elder in a bullying situation. Need to learn to trust people around you. / Communication. Ask questions, ask for help. Stand up for others. Reach out to others, trust.

Creative Storytelling: Courage, strength. It takes courage to get up and speak up in class. And it takes strength to meet new people and be friends with them. Have the courage to stand up to the person. And have strength to ask for help instead or being all alone. Have the courage to try new things. And have the strength to do anything you put your mind to. / Confidence. Confidence on getting to the next grade. Confidence on standing up. Always have confidence everywhere and on everything you do. / Teamwork. Teach you how to work with classmates. Standing up together. Solve problems with family members and others.

Reflective Take Away Assignment: Responsibility, courage. Have the responsibility to do your homework everyday. Have courage to try out for sports. Just like he was when no one was there to pick me up to get released and when I got shot he was there. Trustworthy. Someone who cares, someone that I could always count on. / Lil Durk a rapper because he had nothing and was a juvenile and now he has millions. He inspired me. The personality. / God / I don’t / My mom. She’s always there to help me even when she shouldn’t. / Curry is important to me because he’s a team player. My mom because I know she loves and cares for me even if I make a mistake. I look for how they treat people and if they care about people / I don’t. / my sister. Because she wants me to succeed just like she did. A role model.

Through the Hoops: Teamwork, obstacle. When we have a big project to do, you have to work as a team. And with obstacles you have to be able to study to get grades to pass the test. With teamwork you can stand up as one against the bully. Facing obstacles with bullies in life can slow you down. With teamwork in a job you all have to work on whatever your boss tells you to do and you should work together. Obstacles are big things you need to overcome in life. / Challenge. You’re going to get challenges in school you have to go through. It’s a challenge to stand up to a bully. You’re going to go through challenges. / Teamwork. Teamwork at school while working together or agreeing. Teamwork to stop the bullying. Teamwork will happen at work or a family.

Seeing Beyond: Investigation, science teacher because during experiments you have to a hypotheses and a conclusion. Investigate in a good job that can feed you and your family and anybody else you love. / Observations.

Observe what teacher helps you out the most. Observe who gets bullied and who’s the bully. Observe what school is good to attend to get better benefits. / Teamwork. Ask your peers for help on an assignment. You can’t go through certain stuff alone.

Reflective Take Away Assignment: Imagination, thinking. Putting imagination it the projects we do and the things we write. Thinking if your gonna pass a test or not. Imagine that you can actually achieve your dreams. Thinking about what your gonna do in the future. / Courage. To have courage to ask questions and for help. Courage to make certain decision. / Concentration. Concentration on work and teacher to learn new things. Concentrate on work and you will soon go up to supervisor to manager them more will come.

We can all remember a time when we did not listen to our Intuition or Inner Voice. We would like you to think of an example when you did follow your Intuition. What can you learn from this situation?: When my friends were gonna steal a car. I was about to go but something told me not to, I didn’t go and a few days later I found out they were caught. To trust your gut feeling especially when its strong / A time when I trusted my intuition is when my friends wanted to go and I didn’t want to see this whack movie we were going to watch but my gut kept saying it might be a good movie. I did end up liking the movie. I learned that I shouldn’t talk about the movie until I see it / When I told my friends that we needed to leave and we left. Trust your gut feeling / When my dog was sick.

Listen to yourself / When I came home from school I had a lot of money in my pocket and I took em off and put basketball shorts to go play, and I knew my brother was there so I went home and I hid my money. Hide my prize possessions / I was going bad stuff and my gut told me the cops are coming so I told my friends and they said I was wrong but once we left there were cops everywhere. Trust my gut / When I left the stove on and I went back and it was on. To always trust your gut / I was in a car and wanted to go home and when my friends left to their house they got pulled over and got a ticket and if I was there I would’ve went to Durango for my warrant. Always listen to my intuition because it could be good in a bad situation.

Who am I?: Confidence. I can learn. I can work. Speak up to the bully. Speaking up to do the right thing / Differences. Everyone’s going to be different. The differences make the different. Keeping an open mind to know everyone’s different / Open minded, try new things. Get more engaged in school with student counsel. By not judging people. It helps you to network with other people.

Creative Storytelling: Skills or Tools Learned: Imagination. Imagination helps you to graduate by painting a bigger picture. Have the bully imagine how it feels to be where he or she is right at the moment. Help other people build imagination. Teamwork. When you play sports in school. You and your partner stand up to the bully. If you start a business to put thing together / Teamwork and respect. Respect teachers by raising your hand and following directions. Teamwork can help to stand up to the bully with a teacher or kid. Anywhere you go you have to give respect to get it.

Getting a job, different perspectives.

Describe a time when you had an experience that you perceived (thought/saw) as negative, but through time or something you did, you perceived (thought/saw) as a positive: My cousin use to stop and talk to homeless people. He is a funny guy so I didn’t think it was okay but through time I realized he was being helpful and I enjoyed myself when I put money in their jar / I try to think this way about the way I was treated as a child to better my skills as a father / Being in detention shows me that I need to make a difference in my life so I can go home and to be a remodel to my brother / Me being in Durango got me off the drugs I was doing / I thought I messed up during the slam but was able to turn it around and take lead roll to make up for what happened / The day I came to Durango was good and bad because that day I stopped using perks.
